Saip backs Falcon, teacher idea

School board chair likes Liberal leadership candidate’s proposal to pay educators based on performance BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

Delta school boar chair Dale Saip is throwing his personal support behind Liberal leadership candidate Kevin Falcon. Saip told the Optimist this week he supports Falcon’s position on the issues, including the candidate’s proposal to offer financial incentives for teachers recognized for their excellence in the classroom. “We’re working really hard in our district of finding new ways of doing things and being innovative and I like the idea that someone is willing to step outside the traditional restraints of education

and challenge it,” said Saip. Falcon recently made a splash on his campaign trail by suggesting public school teachers be paid according to their teaching skills and not length of service.

The Liberal leadership hopeful said he would push for a meritbased pay system if he becomes premier after his party’s Feb. 26 leadership vote. His proposal is called a Master Teacher Incentive Program. Noting the same model has

already been implemented in Australia, Saip said, “Ultimately, you have to look at what is the desire of parents and what’s good for kids. We have to continue to embrace new ideas and look forward rather than just doing things the way they have been done because that’s always been done that way.” Susan Lambert, president of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, said this week she was appalled by the Surrey-Cloverdale Liberal MLA’s proposal, noting the Liberal government has undermined the education system with inadequate funding for the past decade. First elected in 2001, Falcon held the health and transporta-

tion portfolios in Premier Gordon Campbell’s Liberal government. He was often the target for opponents of the South Fraser Perimeter Road. Saip said he believes Falcon has the ability to keep a coalition together and govern the province effectively.

A member of the B.C. Liberals, Saip ran for the party’s nomination in the 1999 Delta South by-election, but was disqualified on a technicality. Saip said he has no hard feelings about what happened and continues to support what he believes are the best interests of the province.

MLA calls for lottery investigation Huntington wants closer look at corporation’s fiscal reporting amid suspicious transactions Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington is calling for an investigation into the B.C. Lottery Corporation’s fiscal reporting and controls. “In 2007, the ombudsman determined that BCLC was not able to monitor and counter fraud due to its ‘minimal’ compliance and enforcement procedures,” Huntington said. “Now we find that a multi-million-

dollar spike in suspicious transactions was reported to BCLC, but it did not bother to immediately inform the police.” In 2008, the corporation’s chairman said a number of steps were being taken “in relation to money laundering and suspicious currency transactions reported at BCLC’s gaming facilities.” In 2010, BCLC was fined

$670,000 for more than 1,000 alleged violations of the federal Proceeds of Crime and Terrorist Financing Act. Also in 2010, during a three-month period two casinos reported a combined total of $8 million in 90 suspicious, large cash transactions, including one for $1.2 million, to BCLC. Huntington said media

reports indicate the lottery corporation failed to notify police of the transactions in a timely manner. “Clearly, this is a symptom of deeper problems in BCLC’s organization and its corporate culture,” said the independent MLA. “There needs to be an arm’s-length, independent investigation that examines all aspects of BCLC’s fiscal reporting.

“This government has repeatedly said that gambling is well regulated, but the reality is obviously much different. It’s a free for all out there.” Huntington said reports filed with the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada show the dollar value of suspicious transactions tripled in B.C. last year.

As property assessment notices arrive in mailboxes, civic officials continue to crunch numbers for the 2011 budget. Most Delta homes have seen an increase in assessed values anywhere from five to 15 per cent, but that won’t mean property taxes will go up by the same amount. Delta’s current financial plan projects tax increases between 3.5 and four per cent annually until 2013. Finance director Karl Preuss told the Optimist this year’s municipal tax increase will be based on several factors considered during budget planning now taking place. Civic councillors will take part in a capital plan workshop next week to determine priorities for construction projects and infrastructure upgrades, noted Preuss, who said more number crunching will take place once those priorities are determined. Preuss said homes that have increased in value more than the average nine per cent will pay slightly more than the average tax hike, while those homes

under the average rise in assessments will pay slightly less. He said a proposed tax rate will come to Delta council for consideration within the next couple of weeks. In addition to the day-today operations and capital projects, Delta’s financial planning also continues to focus on a debt management policy aimed at reducing borrowing costs though debt refinancing and early debt payout opportunities, added Preuss. The average Delta homeowner in 2010 paid an additional $84 in municipal property taxes, which represented a 3.98 per cent hike. On a separate front, the average Delta homeowner will pay almost $40 more this year on their utility bills thanks to a decision by Metro Vancouver’s board a few weeks ago to increase the region’s operating budget. The board agreed to increase the operating component for regional sewer, water and solid waste services. According to a report last year by Delta’s finance department, the flat utility rate was projected to go up $30 to $40 annually over the next few years.

Riding associations playing roles in selecting leaders BY

SANDOR GYARMATI

sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com

The Delta South constituency associations for the Liberals and New Democrats are both gearing up for their upcoming leadership votes. Local New Democrats are having a leadership information meeting, which is open to the public, this Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Sundance Pub in Ladner. “We’re going to focus on

what the party policies are around leadership, the convention, and also address the question of the kind of expectations we have coming from South Delta,” said constituency association president Jim Morrison. “We’ll talk about leadership and issues that are important from our community perspective,” he said. The NDP has picked April 17 for its leadership vote, the date Carole James officially steps down.

Each member of the party can vote for the new leader in a one-member, one-vote system. Until now, each constituency association selected delegates that voted at leadership conventions. Members of the B.C. NDP will be able to vote via telephone or Internet during the leadership assembly, or through advance voting. Individuals have until Jan. 17 to become a mem-

ber. For more information, go to www.bcndp.ca. Meanwhile, local Liberals are also preparing for their vote, which takes place Feb. 26, to select a replacement for Premier Gordon Campbell. Those wanting to vote have until Feb. 4 to sign up as a member of the party. Unlike the NDP’s onemember, one-vote system, the Liberals are moving to a model in which votes are tallied on a regional basis.

The Liberals will have 10 regional venues set up around the province for members to participate in a special convention on Feb. 12 to overhaul the party’s constitution to change the voting process. Delta South riding association president Kristy Wawryk said a meeting would be held for local members on Jan. 15 at the Delta Town & Country Inn in Ladner to select delegates for the special con-

vention. Wawryk said all declared leadership candidates have been invited to speak in Delta South in meetings open to both Liberal members and the public. All have expressed interest in doing so and some dates, starting next week, have tentatively been scheduled, she said. To sign up for the Liberals or for more information, go to www.bcliberals.com.

Friday and Saturday nights during the holiday season and typically runs from the last weekend in November until New Year’s Eve. This year in DeltaRichmond, 361 volunteers traveled 21,509 kilometres.

While hundreds took advantage of Operation Red Nose during the holiday season, Delta police were out in force with the annual Counter Attack campaign to ensure those who didn’t were taken off the road. On seven different occasions Delta police officers set up at least two roadblocks in the municipality, said department spokesperson Sgt. Sharlene Brooks. During that time, about 4,800 vehicles were stopped and 51 drivers were asked to take a breath test. Of those, 42 passed while nine registered in the warn or fail range. Five of those drivers were issued a threeday driving suspension while the other four were handed a 30-day driving ban. No impaired driving charges were laid. Two drivers were given 24-hour driving prohibitions for driving while impaired by drugs.

Operation Red Nose has wrapped up for another season and this year volunteers provided almost 200 more rides to holiday revelers in Delta and Richmond. The 2010 campaign was capped off in the early morning hours of Jan. 1 as volunteers ferried people and their vehicles home from New Year’s Eve festivities. “What a night it was,” said longtime volunteer Carlene Lewall. This holiday season proved a busy one for the program with a total of 650 rides, almost 200 more than in 2009. Recently implemented tougher impaired driving penalties in B.C. are believed to be the primary reason for the increase. The final night was a long one for Operation Red Nose volunteers, with the last team returning to headquarters after the final ride of the night at 6:15 a.m. on New Year’s Day. “It was a long night but enjoyed by all,” Lewall said. The vehicles are used every day, she said. “They service as our ambulance, food transport in and out of the village (both to feed us and to service our co-op farm) and people transport (as there is no public transport in the village).” Casey describes the resource centre, which operates without electricity, as a community development project where people’s needs are met. “It’s great to be part of something that enriches lives on a daily basis,” she said. Her duties include teaching English, co-ordinating international volunteers, acting as a department liaison and being the craft club’s secretary. The Association for Mineral Exploration British Columbia will recognize two Tsawwassen residents at its annual awards gala later this month in Vancouver. Myron Osatenko, former chief geologist of Serengeti Resources Inc., is one of the recipients of the 2010 H.H. “Spud” Huestis Award for excellence in prospecting and mineral exploration. Along with David Moore, president and CEO of Seregenti Resources, Osatenko is being recognized for technical skills in coordinating an effective exploration program, and interpreting geological, geophysical and geochemical information to identify and define a drill target that led to the blind discovery of the Kwanika copper-gold porphyry deposit in the highly prospective Quesnel Trough of north-central B.C. Don Coates, also of Tsawwassen, is one of the recipients of the Frank Woodside Past Presidents Distinguished Award for his support of the association. He formed the Coates Drilling Company in 1969. The company was very successful, partly because of the bonus and profit-sharing policies that enabled it to retain experienced drill crews.

Chapman was found hanging around someone's house for a while and seemed to have been abandoned. He is one of the sweetest cats you will ever meet! He is always the first one to welcome you when you enter the Communal Cat Room. Chapman is comfortable with children and he gets along well with other cats too! This wonderful cat would make a great addition to a loving, primarily indoor, home that wants a snuggly and loving companion.

Drive: Complainant reported an attempted theft. Unknown persons attempted to steal two batteries from a bulldozer. Two locks were broken on the compartments of the vehicle. A second excavator had been rummaged through, but nothing was stolen. Damage is about $1,000. There are no suspects and no witnesses. Note: There have been numerous incidents of fraudulent letters being received locally. One is mailed from Tanzania from a Charles Taylor purporting to be a son of a former president of Liberia and offering to share $177 million. Another is from the firm of Diez Asociados & Abogados seeking a next of kin to a client that has left multi millions of dollars. Please be aware these are scams and do not release any information or funds to these parties.

TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW I have a Hall and Oates ban for the car stereo that’s strictly enforced, although I’m sure there are people out there who gladly tap the steering wheel and sing along to Maneater and Kiss on My List should they, heaven forbid, ever find their way to the airwaves these days. I don’t know what it is, but there’s something about the chart-topping duo from the ‘80s that I simply can’t stand. The little, dark-haired one creeps me out a bit, but it’s their music — and I’m far from a critic — that’s become like fingernails on a chalkboard for me. I offer this piece of minutiae not because I’m looking to slag the rock and soul stylings of the duo that had 34 songs make the Billboard Top 100, but to make a point that some things bug certain people more than others. What someone finds annoying, another doesn’t even notice. From what I can gather, there are people out there who will actually hum along to Private Eyes. Jumping from ‘80s pop to aircraft noise in South Delta is a stretch indeed, but humour me with the connection. I don’t mean to trivialize the issue, but it’s clear the sound of overhead planes really bothers some people while others are completely oblivious to it. In the interests of full disclosure, I must admit I fall into the latter category. I haven’t been bothered in the least, although I must confess that you need a sledgehammer to wake me from a deep sleep. Given the ongoing noise complaints don’t originate from a specific neighbourhood, and stretch from the community of Boundary Bay all the way to the Fraser River, it’s not an isolated problem, but neither is it an all-encompassing one. It’s not like officials can say, “Gee, that plane caused a problem for everyone under its path,” and then go about correcting the situation. It appears sensitivity to noise plays a big part in whether that overhead jet, or even the smaller planes bound for Boundary Bay Airport, cause a disturbance. The exact same plane can be an annoyance for one person but not register at all for their neighbour. I know the folks over at municipal hall and at YVR have undertaken efforts to reduce aircraft noise in the community, and they’ve had some success in that regard, but there are enough people still bothered by it that I don’t think they can call it a day. At the same time, I’m not convinced, short of moving Richmond’s international airport up the valley, the sounds of aircraft will ever completely disappear from South Delta.

Politicians are catching on to wireless world of the young MIKE SCHNEIDER

COMMUNITY COMMENT When you see a teenager walking along a street, there is a high probability they will either be staring at, or hammering away on, the tiny keyboard of their mobile device. I am not sure what the percentage ownership of such devices is for the 10 and older set, but I would say if you are 16, chances are you have one of these mobile phones. As the term suggests, some of these phones are “smarter” than others and access to media and networking opportunities are only a click away on the way home from school, in the cafeteria or from the couch. Mobile users of all ages enjoy this access, and a broad spectrum of middle-aged users is participating as well. For younger generations, though, the connectivity is second nature and it will be interesting to see

just how the relationship with the network will affect young lives as access to content and purpose converge. Perhaps foreshadowing this convergence, Liberal leadership candidate Mike de Jong recently suggested the voting age be lowered to 16. Younger voters have traditionally voted to the left side of the spectrum so why would de Jong endorse an idea that could actually trip him up? It is because he understands that younger people are exposing themselves to more ideas and knowledge than at any time before via their social networks. Politicians are recognizing quickly that engagement is a necessary means to gain votes for any side of a political spectrum in this new reality. Politicians have to talk to people to get their message across and social networking is accomplishing this task. It seems like just yesterday that blogging was the key to political success. U.S. President Barack Obama is testament to that. Social networks have made access to the ideas shared in blogs all that more prevalent. Time Magazine’s Person of the Year, Mark Zuckerberg, is the best current example of the old adage, “If you’ve got the technology, use

it!” His Facebook integrates with two million websites and is adding new websites to the network at the staggering rate of 10,000 per day. It is estimated Facebook could reach the one billion-user mark by August 2012. There will eventually be a plethora of commercial uses for this massive network that will move beyond the current advertising revenue model. Politicians are certainly embracing the technology. Candidates see their “friends” as voters and the ease of soliciting more votes through friend networks is building a political battleground presently. In last fall’s by-election many of the candidates used their web presences to encourage us to “follow” them on Facebook, Twitter, etc. The same is occurring right now with all provincial Liberal leadership candidates madly updating their Facebook status several times a day. YouTube videos following their every move and teaching us how to bake shortbread have become the norm. With one and possibly three elections coming up this year, it will be interesting to see how our local candidates and parties present themselves to us in the online world.

Peaceful sleep is a thing of the past after a hectic few days of Christmas festivities. From 11:37 until 11:53 p.m., five arrivals annoyed me. One at its peak registered 68 dB, another 63 dB and the others mid to high 50s dB. When the noise is immediately over one’s sleeping area, it is infuriating. A peaceful seven hours of sleep is a thing of the past. Has YVR moved arrivals that used to go over Boundary Bay (and unfortunately closer to

South Surrey) and placed them over Tsawwassen? Residents from Ladner who seem to think residents of Tsawwassen do not experience aircraft noise are mistaken. Many of us suffer and complain regularly. Unless more people elect to let YVR know their feelings, aircraft noise will only get worse. It will be interesting to see what conclusions the upcoming aircraft noise study will produce. I agree with Jacqui

Plane noise dwarfed by neighbourhood din

Editor: I am amazed at the number of individuals who write to the Optimist complaining about aircraft noise over South Delta. I live in Tsawwassen and spend quite a lot of time in my office. On a normal day I am very aware of barking dogs that have been left cooped up all day while

their owners are working, garden services with their leaf blowers that operate at 70 to 75 dB, tree chippers (115 dB), lawn mowers (92 dB), emergency sirens (64 to 94 dB, depending on distance) and daily construction site equipment noise. There aren’t many airplanes flying over Ladner and Tsawwassen that come

close to these noise levels. There is certainly a lot more noise pollution at ground level than at 7,000 to 10,00 feet. We should consider ourselves lucky we have controlled airspace and are not subject to some of the aircraft noise levels in and around the Richmond area. D.M. Grant

Ladnerite not disturbed at all by sounds of aircraft

Leadership candidate promises are really confessions of measures that should have been taken long ago Editor: Just finished reading all the collective promises spewed by the Liberal candidates: shrink government, investigation into B.C. Rail sale, judicial review of the $6 million Basi/Virk settlement, HST referendum, carbon tax referendum, full expenses disclosure of MLAs, overhaul of the decayed justice system,

more transparent government, blah, blah, blah. From my perspective, these aren’t election platforms, they’re confessions: the leadership candidates are inadvertently acknowledging these are things that should have been done in the first place. Humbug to the lot of them. Rusty Monger

a time to die.” Ecclesiastes 3:1ff News of the terminal illness and the untimely death of this young wife and mother gave me pause. They are reminders of our frailty and vulnerability. Terminal illness and death can visit us at any time, at any age and can potentially render us hopeless. Yet, I believe, that with Christ there is always hope — even in the shadow of death. As the apostle Paul wrote: “...the Lord himself will come down from heaven ... and the dead in Christ will rise first ... Therefore, comfort one another with these words.” 1 Thess. 4:16ff Whatever this new year may have in store for you, may this be the hope and comfort that will carry you through, especially when faced with difficult and discomforting times.

We’ve just entered a new year. For myself, it was a bit of a strange year-end and beginning. Just prior to Christmas, I learned of the terminal illness of a younger colleague of mine who is a pastor in the Langley area. At almost the same time I learned of the death of a beloved former member of my congregation. Just after entering the new year I received a phone call from a friend in Victoria announcing that a niece of his had died in her sleep. She was 38 and mother of two young children. I know her family and the family of her husband well. Admittedly, these announcements shook me up. Upon personal reflection, I couldn’t help but think of these words: “There is a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven: a time to be born and

Tree chipping

The Lions Club is hosting Christmas tree chipping events throughout Delta this weekend. Residents can take their tree to any of the three locations — Memorial Park in Ladner, South Delta Recreation Centre in Tsawwassen or Sungod Recreation Centre in North Delta — to have it chipped for a small donation. The mulch will then be used for building trails and other horticultural and agricultural purposes in the community. In Ladner and Tsawwassen, the chipping runs from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. today and tomorrow. Trees can also be taken to the Vancouver Landfill for composting.

WRIST PAIN

Bell Carpal Tunnel Syndrome #30 gave quick relief within an hour. I was hand milking cows and began having weakness, numbness and pain shooting up my arms. Pain increased at night. My doctor suggested surgery as the only option. Not true! The pain and numbness are all gone after taking #30. I can do now whatever activity I want. Marjorie Wilson, 55, Dubuc, SK ! I’m a car mechanic. Holding tools was getting increasingly difficult because of wrist and tendon pain. After 2 weeks on #30 I’m fully productive #30 again. Cancelled scheduled surgery. William Marrero, 56, Miami, FL ! I was wearing wrist braces. A woman saw it and told me she had relief right away with #30. I got some same day. It worked for me as well. Thanks a million. Diane Frank, 49, North Battleford, SK ! I’m a nurse and work with my hands all day. I experienced increasing pain in my hands and fingers. Surgery was the only option I was told. My husband found #30 for me. I have no more pain or inflammation since. You have a life long customer. Nina Wallace, 52, Dacula, GA

ARTHRITIS Pain free in 2 weeks!

This is what happened to me personally. After suffering for years I desperately tried everything, drugs, natural products, physiotherapy, acupuncture, magnets and nothing was of any real help. Finally I had relief in 2 weeks by taking shark cartilage that was specially processed to preserve the natural active ingredients. This is the kind we are now promoting. I realized then that there are over 50 million men and women that are battling the same illness and getting treatments that are not working well, otherwise we would not have this ongoing huge health problem. In the last 10 years we have helped tens of thousands of men and women to have less pain or no pain at all. This is a by-product of the food industry. No sharks are caught because of their bones/cartilage. Nick A. Jerch, President We have real EVIDENCE that it works. On our web site you find over 100 testimonials with full names and towns. All 100% true. Skeptics may call them. Here are some #1 examples: ! Doctor suggested knee replacement after all his options failed with drugs and cortisone shots in knee and lower back. I recommend Bell Shark Cartilage to those millions suffering needlessly like I did for 40 years with arthritis in my knees. It's a shame that I was given drugs and injections all these years when a natural medicine could have spared me the endless torture day and night. Pat Laughlin, Coldwater, ON !My hip is 95% pain free. Pain killing drugs mask and Bell Shark Cartilage heals. Rebecca Hite, Oroville, CA!I tried another brand and pain came back. 2 weeks on Bell and pain is gone again. Gert Dupuis, Hanmer, ON!Cancelled knee replacement. I was in pain and limping. Have no more pain now. Can square dance for hours. Anton Melnychuk, Porcupine Plain, SK.!For 32 years I cried barrels of tears. Was in and out of hospitals costing society tens of thousands of dollars. I have taken many thousands of pills that nearly killed me. Finally 3 bottles of Bell Shark Cartilage costing less than $100 stopped a lifetime of suffering without side effects. Eleanor Sauson, Shigawake, QC!Others write: Can walk again for hours…Climb stairs without hanging on to railing…First time in 15 years can sleep at night…Rheumatoid pain in joints down 90%, same for my sister.

Kids can “pay down” their overdue fines at Fraser Valley Regional Library branches by reading between Jan. 4 and Feb. 28. Pick up a free Read Away Fines Reading Record from any of FVRL’s 24 libraries, including those in Ladner and Tsawwassen, and each day a child reads between now and the end of February will earn a $1 credit, to a maximum of $55, toward paying down overdue fines. “The 2011 Read Away Fines program for children is a celebration of FVRL’s elimination of overdue fines on children’s material borrowed on children’s cards,” said Rita Penco, director of client services at FVRL. “Reading is an essential skill for every child. Children now have free access to library materials without worrying about the threat of overdue fines. This program gives children who may have stopped using the library because of pre-existing fines, the chance to get rid of their old fines in a fun way while rediscovering FVRL.” In addition to the removal of overdue fines on children’s materials borrowed on children’s cards, FVRL has made changes to its entire fine structure. In an effort to encourage on time return of high demand materials and to improve accessibility of library resources, FVRL has adopted a new fines structure that brings it in line with other library systems in the Lower Mainland. Late charges on adult books, magazines and CD books are now 35 cents/ item/day. Late charges on

Walk this way

Nordic walking clinic gets started next week BY

L

DAVE WILLIS

dwillis@delta-optimist.com

ouise Peters wants to get the word out about the Sun Run 2011 InTraining Nordic Walking Clinic in Ladner. “We go from pretty much zero to 10 kilometres over the course of 13 weeks,” says Peters, Ladner’s Sun Run Nordic walking clinic leader. “I think we go over 10 kilometres at least once so they have an idea of what it’s going to feel like [during the actual event].” The clinic gets started on Sunday, Jan. 16 at 8:30 a.m. and runs on Sunday mornings leading up to the Sun Run on April 17. The Sun Run is a 10-kilometre event in Vancouver. Nordic walking, which is basically walking with poles, is increasing in popularity, says Peters. “I think once people hear about and try it, they really like it.” Peters says there can be a bit of a adjustment period for beginners just getting used to not feeling silly walking with poles. “I know my kids keep bugging me all the time, saying they wouldn’t do it,” she says. “But there’s more people coming out doing it now.” This will be her second year leading the Ladner Nordic walking clinic. It takes place at the Ladner Community Centre. “I had some people sign up for the walking clinic last year, a couple weeks after they had all come into my clinic, once they tried the poles, they liked how they felt and were comfortable with them,” she says. “It’s just walking to a new level.” Nordic walking can provide a good workout as well, she says. “I really like it as a cross-training workout. I’m a runner. I like doing this on my off-days. It increases your upper body strength and [improves] posture.” There can also be a social aspect to Nordic walking as well. “It’s also a good socializing exercise. You can be walking and chatting with somebody but you’re not getting sweaty and breathless, unless you’re going really hard, but you don’t have to go hard to get a good workout.” The clinic won’t be at “a crazy pace or anything. We walk and talk and carry each other along.” Peters stumbled across Nordic walking while she was looking for different workout options. She gave it a shot and got hooked. “When I tried it, I thought, ‘This is really fun, I like this.’” According to Wikipedia, “Nordic walking is defined as fitness walking with specially designed poles. It evolved from an off-season ski-training activity known as ski walking, hill bounding or ski striding to become a way of exercising year-round.” To sign up for the Ladner Nordic walking clinic, call 604-952-3000. The cost to join is $139. Everyone joining the clinic receives an InTraining long sleeve technical T-shirt, a logbook and entry into the Sun Run (which includes a souvenir T-shirt). Poles can be bought through Peters for $80. For more information, e-mail her at urbantrekking2010@gmail.com. • A Sun Run training clinic is also being offered in Tsawwassen at the South Delta Recreation Centre. It runs Thursdays from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and begins on Thursday, Jan. 20. It’s also 13 sessions.

Bilingual concert set for Genesis Theatre Bilingual children’s musician Will Stroet, a two-time Western Canadian Music Award nominee, will be performing a pair concerts with his Backyard Band in Delta later this month. Stroet will be at the Delta Church in North Delta on Saturday, Jan. 15 and at Genesis Theatre in Ladner on Sunday, Jan. 16. Both shows run from 1 to 2 p.m. Tickets are only $3 per person. The concerts are sponsored by the Canadian Parents for French-Delta Chapter and the Delta school district.

Stroet is excited for his first two public concerts of 2011 in Delta following a successful 2010 that saw him perform more than 200 shows in Canada. Stroet will sing songs from his newly released album, Walk ‘n’ Roll, and previous English and French albums, two of which have been nominated for Best Children’s Recording and Best Francophone Recording by the Western Canadian Music Awards. “We’re very excited to have Will Stroet perform these two bilingual concerts for families,” says Christine Carriou,

And Will’s music is fresh, interactive and fun while still being educational. He has great appeal for both kids and adults.” As a former French immersion music teacher in Vancouver, Stroet easily connects with kids and sings about themes such as reading, walking and bike safety, sports, vegetables, animals and personal hygiene. While the topics may seem typical of kids’ music, the songwriting is clever and refreshing with lively arrangements, appealing harmonies and even some face-melting guitar. “Most kids today have a more sophisticated taste in music than they are given credit for,” says Stroet, “so I use interesting rhythms, rhymes and wordplay in my songwriting to connect with kids and their parents. I try to write unique songs that deliver an educational message in a fun way.” Stroet’s CDs are also popular teaching aids for French immersion and core French teachers. He leads workshops for teachers about how to make learning French more fun through music in the classroom. The school district and Canadian Parents for FrenchDelta Chapter are encouraging families to buy tickets in advance. A walk in the snow is wonderful exercise. That snowy sidewalk has to be cleared anyway, so why not turn shovelling into an impromptu workout? Shovelling snow requires as much energy (read: burns as many calories) as running at 15 km/h. A fullyloaded shovel can weigh up to 25 pounds. But you can minimize the strain on your muscles and joints and still get a great work out by taking your time and stretching beforehand. Walk the dog. Borrow one if necessary. Or make a walking/chatting date with

a friend and reward yourselves with coffee or tea afterward. Discover exercise DVDs. Borrow some beginner’s exercise DVDs from the library (tai chi, stretching and low-impact aerobics are all great options that don’t require lots of gear). When you find one that suits you, invest in your own copy. Sign up for swimming, dancing or tai chi. Many community centres and pools offer low-cost lessons and classes. Some gyms and dance studios also offer seasonal discounts. Clean your house. Vacuum vigorously. Wash windows and walls. Scrub floors. Clean closets. Conquer dirt and clutter — and work up a sweat. The reward of the workout will be reaped by enjoying a sparkling home. Speak to your doctor before you start a vigorous activity to ensure it’s suitable for you. Whether ice and snow make your eyes sparkle or walking in a winter wonderland leaves you cold, with a little imagination you can stay active when the mercury plummets. Research shows that properly designed activities can decrease your arthritis pain, increase your flexibility and overall fitness, and do wonders for your state of mind. The Arthritis Society offers the following tips: Take to the trails. Consider taking a lesson in cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Both activities have a low impact on your knees, yet work the whole body and can burn an incredible 480 calories per hour even at a relatively relaxed pace. Many winter resorts, ski clubs and provincial parks offer equipment rentals as well as instructions. Play in the snow. Build a snowman or a snow-fort, or make snow angels. Or challenge the neighbours to a game of snow-pitch. Don’t forget your shovel.

Quitting smoking on a first attempt is one of the biggest myths that exists around giving up nicotine addiction, according to Canadian nurses experienced in smoking cessation interventions. For this reason, make a resolution to quit smoking, but don’t think you have to do it all by yourself. “Relapse is really quite common. Smokers, loved ones of smokers and health care professionals need to understand that it takes between five and seven quit attempts for most smokers before one sticks,” says registered nurse Karen Beaumont. “We need to be there for smokers the first time they

Family members, in particular, need to be nonjudgmental supports during relapses and understand that several attempts are merely part of the long-term process of quitting, she adds. Expanded Party a hit once again The door has closed on the seventh edition of South Delta Minor Hockey Association’s annual Party in da House Tournament. As usual the Party didn’t disappoint. The event was expanded from four to six days due to the South Delta recreation centre being converted for the Winter Wonderland holiday skate. However the added length didn’t seem to deter the enthusiastic athletes and fans. The arena was packed for most games and the players stepped up their performances with many bringing their “A” games. In total, 44 games were played with 12 going to a shootout to determine a winner. The tournament not only generated great hockey action from the 400 athletes but also featured a spectacular raffle with over 80 prizes to be won — many of which were donated by the local business community. Once again teams also stepped up for the “Hockey for Hunger” Delta Food Bank challenge. The Midget Sixers, coached by Steve Sim and Ian Berry won a team party at the Boot and Sombreo restaurant in Ladner by bringing in the most amount of food by weight. The real winner was the Delta Food Bank with nearly 1,600 pounds of food donated — an awesome response by all the tournament participants. The Party in da House also raised $500 for Canuck Place — B.C.’s hospice for terminally ill children. “The kids get so much given to them by playing in this tournament,” noted organizer Theresa Watts. “They all get at least three games of hockey, a skills competition, plus they walk away with loot from the tournament, much of which was provided by Firstar Performance Wear. “The Hockey for Hunger challenge and the Canuck Place Challenge are both great ways for our athletes to learn how to give back to a community that gives them so much.” Watts thanked the community of South Delta for its enthusiastic support and is already looking forward to the eighth edition of the Party in da House.

Hitmen win Bantam title by prevailing in shootout The Party in da House Tournament was a lot of fun for the South Delta Hitmen. Between the skills competition and the games, there was always something to keep the Bantam team busy. Up against very skilled South Delta rivals, the Hitmen went 1-2 — losing both games in overtime. It was still good enough to put them through to the gold medal game against the Sting. The Hitmen came across an exceptional goalie in Jacob Tersigni who stopped 45 of 46 shots. With the score tied 1-1 after regulation time, it went to a shootout. Mark Jesty, who scored in regulation for

South Delta #2 edge rivals to win Party Midget crown

Introducing

The Midget division championship game more than lived up to its billing at the Party in da House Tournament. The event’s favourites — South Delta #2 and South Delta #1 — squared off in what proved to be a classic with SD#2 finally prevailing in a shootout. The game opened up with a nice goal from SD1 sniper Brandon Brenneis, only to have Luke Smith answer on a nice deflection in the dying seconds of the opening period. The middle stanza featured more excellent hockey in front of a large and boisterous crowd. Richard Hudie gave SD1 the lead and SD2 replied when Chris McCluskie took a brilliant pass from Luke Smith and sniped a shot over goalie Connor Sudbury. SD2 then took a 3-2 lead into the final period thanks to Dallas Chreptyk finishing off a terrific rush by Adam Enns. SD2 was awarded the tournament sportsmanship award but got into penalty trouble in the third period. A five-minute major penalty was being effectively killed off until an errant

South Delta #2 were all smiles after their dramatic shootout win. pass ended up on the stick of Mitchell Marentette who notched the tying goal with less than seven minutes left. Another penalty gave SD1 a two-man advantage, however, tremendous penalty killing by Enns, Trevor Gibson, Connor Smith, Chreptyk, Tanner Taylor, Paul Thompson and McCluskie kept the score tied at 3-3. The shootout saw SD2 goalie Connor Ewert turn away both SD1 attempts while Luke Smith and Gibson, the game’s MVP, convert their shots to end the evening’s drama. “What a tremendous game by both teams!” said SD2 coach Jeff Enns. “Congratulations to Lee Anderson and his team for

competing well and playing a hard-fought game.” The road to the final included SD2 getting a late goal from Carson Grabowski to salvage a tie with the Bearcats. SD2 iced just nine players for the game. The same teams met in the semi-finals with SD2 skating to a 5-2 win. The SD2 roster also includes: Ryan Standerwick, Brendan Mah and Brett Sandhu. Missing was Peter Sandelands while Brandon Sandness was injured. The coaching staff also includes: Brad Mah and Kyle Enns. The team also thanks the efforts of Theresa Watts and crew for a well-run tournament.

South Delta Chiefs celebrate winning the Party in da House Pee Wee Division title after a hardfought 4-2 win over the Raiders in the championship game.

Chiefs win Pee Wee title

The South Delta Chiefs have seen plenty of tough competition this season playing at the tier one level but none tougher than battling their own friends on home ice at the Party in da House Tournament. Every game was a hard fought affair and several ended in a shootout. The Chiefs overcame an opening game loss to roar back and win the tournament. They ran into a hot goaltender in their first game against Mike Froehler’s Raiders as Cole Hendy was superb in handing the Chiefs a 3-1 loss. The locals rebounded to win their next three games and earn a rematch with the Raiders in Sunday’s gold medal final. The Chiefs’ blueline — Wes Hacklander, Liam Swayze, Taylor Goundrey and Dylan Skujins —put up a wall that limited the

Bowl in Vancouver, Burnaby, Surrey or Richmond

Raiders opportunities in the attacking zone. When they did get through, they had goaltender Nicholas Worsnop to deal with. There were also plenty of offensive opportunities generated by Nolan McLeod, Mathew Lowe, Braedyn Wey, Jack McMillan, Max Walker, Iver Jackson and Joshua Vaughan. The Chiefs fought their way back from being down for the better part of two periods and would eventually prevail 4-2. Vaughan netted the game winner, while Jackson Skujins and Mathew Thompson also scored. The players, team staff and families are proud to have the opportunity to represent South Delta in the upcoming Delta Cup. The team thanks Theresa Watts and all of the volunteers that make this tournament the success that it is.

South Delta Ice Army rebounded from an 0-2 start to capture the Atom division at the Party in da House Tournament. The Ice Army were now matched-up with the first place Wolves to open the playoffs, with the winner going directly to the finals. Sillett was back between the pipes and his teammates continued to build on their solid play — producing a win to advance to the championship game against the Blades. Both teams played hard, showed great skill and sportsmanship. The Ice Army had learned from their second place finish earlier in the season at Seafair and were determined to play their best and be successful. The Ice Army congratulate the other five South

Delta teams on an excellent tournament and tournament director Theresa Watts and her committee of volunteers for a great job. Lastly, head coach Cameron Bancroft praised his team for its hard work, great skill and sportsmanship. “They have made their coaches and parents extremely proud,” he said. The team also includes: Max Cantlon, Richard Bailey, Jack Nielson, Josh Holt, Rowan Childs, Dominic Dawydiuk-Clozza, Will Bancroft, Alex Golab, Jake Cantlon, Joshua Ogilvie, Benjamin Knauer and Arjun Mangat.

The Ice Army saved their best for last to capture the Atom Division title at the Party in da House Tournament. After dropping two games in robin-round play, the Ice Army hit their stride for the playoffs, winning both games to take home the gold medal. The locals entered the event having enjoyed a respectable regular season and a great run at the Seafair Icebreaker Tournament. Hopes were high they could compete well with their fellow South Delta teams. They produced a 4-1 first period lead in their opening game against the Wolves but were outplayed in the final two periods and surrendered the game winner with just 56 seconds remaining. Regular goaltender Connor Sillett was ill and unable to start the second game against the Thunderdogs. Defenceman Jakob Wyne courageously stepped up to fill the void, having not played a game in net all year. He did a terrific job despite his team losing a hard-fought battle in a shootout.

What's your dream?

Ronald Stewart

With great sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Ronald Stewart, at the age of seventy-nine years in Delta, British Columbia on December 26th, 2010. He has gone to join his beloved wife Joanne, his parents, James and Sarah, and the great friends who went before him. Ron was born in Victoria, BC with his twin brother Gerald (Gerry) on April 13, 1931. Their brother Jack is four years older. The family moved to Kitsilano, and they stayed there until Ron and Gerry finished school in 1949. The boys shared many happy memories, including riding their bikes from Kits to Boundary Bay and Point Roberts, back when there was a ferry instead of the Deas Island Tunnel. At an early age Ron started working for the Canadian Pacific Railway in the office where he flourished, and it was not long before he was promoted to a management position. At the age of twenty-four he served as a North Vancouver Municipal Councilor, and later gave many years on the Board of Directors for the Richmond Savings Credit Union. Ron devoted his talents to real estate marketing, brokerage and development and he was remarkably successful in his many endeavors. Ron was an exceptional business man and an icon of friendship and goodness. Ron will be profoundly missed and cherished for his pervasive, good humour and jokes, and wonderful, grand gestures of love and devotion. Ron was such a remarkable husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Our home was filled with laughter and we enjoyed an incredible life: horses, motorbikes, motor homing, boating, and many family trips to Maui and the Outdoor Resorts in Palm Springs. Dad and Mom even went to China. Dad spent many years coaching our softball teams and also served as the President of the Delta Hockey Association. He was always so stoic, strong and outrageously funny; he was a rock for many, many people. Ron made such a positive difference in this world, and he will never be forgotten by those who loved and respected him. Ron will be forever loved and his memory held dear in the hearts of his wonderful wife Barbara, his son and best friend, Scott (Christy), his loving daughter Linda (John), his special granddaughter, Georgia (Scott and Christy), and Mike (Siggy). He also leaves to mourn his brother, Jack and wife, Verity, (Greg, Laurie, Guy and Blair) and his twin brother, Gerry and wife, Clarice, (Gayle, Glen and Jim), and many other family members and special friends. Barbara gave Ron a renewed reason to live after Joanne lost her battle with cancer; Ron and Barbara enjoyed twelve wonderful years of love and happiness. She was an angel in her loving devotion and care of Ron, and he was a saint to her. Of special joy to Papa was his granddaughter Georgia. She was the love of his life, and he felt blessed to have enjoyed her first ten years. Every day we remember Mom, and now these memories will include Dad too. Ron was the honourary, “Mayor of Pacific Court,” “Skipper,” and “Sherriff of Freeman Lane.” Dad was known for his resounding, “Hullo!” He always made Christmas special and there were years when he dressed as Santa Clause for the neighbourhood kids; of course his sleigh was his boat and trailer and it was pulled by our Ford truck. A highlight of our final, wonderful family Christmas Day was Dad’s customized golf cart with the number “13” and “Sherriff ” proudly emblazoned, from his son, Scott. Now the Sherriff has been transferred and Ron leaves in his place, Scott, and “Deputy Sherriff in Training,” granddaughter Georgia. At Ron’s request there will be no service. Instead there will be a celebration of Ron’s life at the cabin. It will be summer send off for the Skipper, with a party at the Point on Saturday, July 9, 2011 from 2:00 to 5:00. Please email Linda at linda.stewart.ross@gmail.com for details. Expressions of sympathy for the family are also welcome to this address. Those wishing to do so may make a memorial donation in memory of Ron to the Delta Hospital or to a charity of choice. Good people will be remembered as a blessing – Proverb 10:7 Though his smile is gone forever, And his hand we cannot touch, We still have so many memories, Of the one we love so much. His memory is a keepsake, With which we will never part. God has him in his keeping. We have him in our hearts.

Survived by her daughter Amy (Brandon), grandchildren Jack and Jaylie, mother Dorothy, 6 sisters, 4 brothers-in-law, 15 nieces and nephews, 2 aunts, many cousins and friends. Predeceased by her father and infant sister. Beth’s kind and generous ways brightened the lives of those around her. She was a gentle soul that left us too soon. Our thanks to staff at Delta Hospice and Richmond Hospital Oncology and Palliative Care units. As Beth wished, donations to Delta Hospice would be greatly appreciated. Celebration of Life to be held at Tsawwassen Coast Hotel on January 8 at 1:00 p.m. Beth’s strength and determination were amazing, right to the very end. We will miss you forever Mama Bef.

He is survived by his devoted wife Gladys; loving children Ron (Jennifer), Dan (Debbie) and Karen (Jeff); adored grandchildren Daphne, Cory and Tara; niece Roseanne (Weldon); many other nieces and nephews and many friends. Ron was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force and worked as a radar technician and was President of the Royal Hudson Steam Train Society. He was a member and Past President of the BC Society of Model Engineers and was instrumental in designing and co-ordinating the building of their current site in Burnaby. Ron loved animals, skiing, scuba diving with his sons, parachuting and many other hobbies. Thanks to the staff of Delta View Enrichment Centre, especially Amit and Tracy, for their care and concern over the past six years and to the staff of Delta Hospital. No service by request. Donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association. Delta Funeral Home in care of arrangements.

Cancer June 21-July 22: The accent lies on relationships: partnerships, marriage, exciting prospects if single – and on opportunities, opposition, litigation, negotiation, relocation. Be patient if a legal matter gets in the way of a work project before Thursday: this barrier should fade by late month or March. Recent relationship intensity will lighten Saturday onward. This day starts a six-week period of investment in your career (via money, time, commitment, any of these). But avoid “pure investments” these six weeks – they might “burn cash.” Thursday/Friday bring social delights! Retreat, rest, plan Saturday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Another 11 days of work and health drudgery. But this trend is relieved by a nice, buoyant romantic breeze. After Saturday, too, life becomes so exciting you’ll forget that work surrounds you! However, you probably have lots of unfinished chores “hanging fire” after a few weeks of neglect or misdirected efforts. Focus on those now, briskly clear away as much as you can. Don’t mix sex and romance before Thursday, nor creativity and “building,” nor investment and a gambling urge. Be ambitious, seek out higher-ups Thursday/Friday – luck accompanies you. Saturday brings social joys! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: The emphasis lies on romance, creative urges, speculation and a love of “risk,” children’s affairs, pleasure and beauty. You’re riding a winning streak! But don’t expect a lot of cooperation from spouse, others, regarding any property, security or family notion you have. They’ll only join in if there is an ambitious angle for them. Don’t try to seal any deals before Thursday. Though two weeks remain in this romantic phase, you’ll need to make your bid for intimacy now, as Saturday ends a long “sexual magnetism” streak. (Another, life-changing one comes Nov. 11 to July 2012.)

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Remain ambitious. You see things wisely, your “executive decisions” are good. The barrier that appeared last week (refusal/ competition from another?) is not gone, but you’re moving beyond it. Retreat, rest and plan future actions Sunday. Your energy surges Monday to Wednesday – you’ll need it to run the gauntlet of barriers and problems that face you – give it a heroic try! It ends with a comforting message or thought. Chase money (or buy important items) Thursday/Friday – smooth luck accompanies you. Saturday brings talks, trips, casual friends – and starts six weeks of social joy! Taurus April 20-May 20: You’re making some of the most important contacts of this decade, over the last year and this month. Be sociable, say hello, join new groups and clubs. Strictly avoid legal hassles this week. Take care with “big money” Sunday to Wednesday – unrealistic hopes could lead you astray. Your energy, charisma and effectiveness soar Wednesday night through pre-dawn Saturday – a good time to socialize, join that new group, or whisper words of love to someone! Chase money, shop, sell items Saturday. Friday starts six weeks of possible friction with bosses, parents – be humble, not sassy! Gemini May 21-June 20: This week contains yes’s and no’s. The biggest “no” occurs Tuesday and Friday in investment, large money, power, clout and sexual areas. (Especially if these also involve legal, international, intellectual and cultural arenas.) The yes’s? In work, health, career Monday to Wednesday and Saturday: commitment equals eventual winning! If you have to choose between love, creativity and risk on one side and big money, clout, power, sexual magnetism on the other, choose love, creativity, risk: they control the environment right now. Your finances need change, but not expansion. You’re loved.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The main accent lies on family, home, security, real estate, gardening, nutrition, Mother Nature. This area faces significant (world-changing) transformations now to 2024. This week (and the past five) domestic conditions fight your partnership yearnings. E.g., you live in different cities, or your place is such a mess you fear to invite anyone home, or “Mommy” lives on the couch. However, Saturday eases this: you start six weeks of heightened romantic prospects and intensity. This leads to a February-June blooming of splendid relationship luck, and in turn to eight years of love excitement. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Paperwork, details, communications, errands – you have a lot of small chores to perform. You’ll do them easily. Your money luck improves. Buy a gift for a loved one. Sunday’s romantic. Tackle chores Monday to Wednesday – but avoid money topics, or chasing money. Relationships inspire, attract, open doors to success Wednesday night to Saturday pre-dawn. Be outgoing, eager, diplomatic – love could shine! Saturday brings mysteries, financial and sexual opportunities. This day begins six weeks of possible domestic friction – channel this energy into repairs or build a new job “base.” Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Continue to chase money. You might have to make some decisions or pronouncements about home, family, real estate – you’re still ultra-lucky here to Jan. 21. Buying a new home is favoured Jan. 9, 10 (before 2 p.m. PST) 13,14, 15, 19 (to 1:30 p.m.) 20 and 21. Money continues to flow beside you – bringing more, but prompting you to spend more. Sunday’s for home, family. Romance, creative projects, speculation call you Monday dawn to Wednesday eve. Tackle chores and health issues Thursday/Friday: you’ll succeed easily! Exciting meetings, opportunities Saturday.

Jan. 9 - Jan. 16 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Your energy, charisma, pizzazz and effectiveness ride high! Make contacts and satisfy your curiosity, especially Sunday. Get out all week, chase, begin important projects. Demand an end to unfair or stale situations Monday to Wednesday. Romance, creative surges, speculative urges and pleasure visit you Wednesday night to Saturday predawn. Tackle chores Saturday. This day, a long period of determination and sexual magnetism ends; this was a complex “gift,” for it also nudged you toward the end of many things. Most things existing before 2008 are ripe for ending. Soon – the new! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Continue to rest. Lie low, contemplate people and situations, and make plans. Be charitable. Deal with government agencies, institutions, corporate head offices. This week and next are your last “opening” for a while to make a major purchase or launch a lucky earnings vehicle. Sunday is particularly good for this. (But DON’T buy high-tech, electronics, etc. before Thursday.) Talks, trips and casual friends fill Monday-Wednesday. Deal with family, real estate Thursday/Friday – luck accompanies you. Starting Saturday, you’ll be active, magnetic and determined, for six weeks! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Bosses, parents and higher-ups treat you with new approval or affection for the rest of January. Take advantage – socialize, schmooze. Money often flows along “networks.” Your energy remains high Sunday. Be ambitious Monday to Wednesday, especially in the pursuit of money. (These are not really good purchasing days, though, nor for gaining the co-operation of your equals/peers.) Casual friends, siblings, communications and travel fill Thursday/Friday – all is smooth, easy! Settle into a “down home” weekend Saturday. This day starts six weeks of secret money plans or “charity money.” timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
