Committee agrees to disagree
Tsawwassen Area Plan group members unable to come up with unanimous position at final meeting Thursday BY
SANDOR GYARMATI
sgyarmati@delta-optimist.com
The Tsawwassen Area Plan Committee agreed to disagree when it comes to the Southlands. At the committee’s final meeting Thursday, the members discussed and voted on several policy directions for a new area plan, making a few amendments to several of them including the future of the Southlands. Agreeing they couldn’t come up with a unanimous position, the majority voted in favour of a staff recommendation to retain the current agricultural designation. The policy will also note that the committee couldn’t reach a consensus. The committee also voted
to remove a phrase stating several members supported some residential development as an incentive to encourage active farming on the majority of the property. Committee member Ian Robertson said keeping the agricultural designation doesn’t close the door to a future proposal being considered. “I do not think if we leave it as agricultural, which is the essence of the policy document, that it closes the door forever, or for a particularly long time, for anyone coming forward with a proposal,” he said. The land could probably support almost 2,000 homes, but whether it’s appropriate there is not for the committee to decide,
said Robertson. Helen Kettle, however, said she supported calling for some development in exchange for upgrading the land and putting it into agricultural production. She said further consultation was needed with the community, which drew jeers from some in the audience who interrupted the meeting several times. Tasked with coming up with a new area plan, which hasn’t been updated in almost 20 years, the committee’s most controversial subject has been the 538-acre Southlands property. It’s zoned agricultural but no longer in the Agricultural Land Reserve. The Century Group wants to develop it with 1,900 homes on
part of the site using concepts of new urbanism and agricultural urbanism. Opponents to any development have been demanding the site be retained for farming only. Committee member Laura Dixon at Thursday’s meeting said there’s also a diversity of opinion on what type of agricultural activity should take place there. A mail-out survey conducted for Delta found a majority were not in favour of allowing development, but the Century Group says a telephone survey it had done found a more even split. Coun. Bruce McDonald, chair of the committee, said it was a given there wouldn’t be a consensus among the committee mem-
bers since the issue is clearly a divisive one in the community. Coun. Heather King noted she would like to see the issue finally resolved because it’s not going away. “When you have agricultural land owned by a developer there is no closure,” she said. At the committee’s meeting on Tuesday, McDonald said a new area plan would not automatically change current zoning. Applications to amend zonings would still have to go through a public hearing process, he said. The new area plan, which calls for “modest growth” in Tsawwassen, is to go to council on Aug. 30. Candidates talk Southlands By-election ballot will have supporters and opponents of Century’s plan for contentious Tsawwassen property
and young families as well as improving the soil quality on parts of the site to bring the land back into agricultural production. “The traffic increase argument against it, quite frankly, is a deflective argument. It may well increase a little bit here and there, but not to the degree that the plan is not justified,” he said. Saying the Century Group proposal has clearly divided Tsawwassen, Ian Paton said he’s bothered by seeing the land go fallow if it can be turned productive.
Paton, who said his family has been pro-active in saving Delta farmland, agreed to at least look at any proposal. As far as the talk of potential trade-off, which would see a large area upgraded for soil-based farming in exchange for housing, Paton said council must consider any development application without preconceived bias. “One concern I have is that this property provides no irrigation water, which is essential to today’s soilbased farmers. Few, if any,
Delta farmers have shown interest in renting or leasing this property for farming purposes.” Kathleen Higgins said she’s opposed to allowing housing on agricultural land and additional housing can be introduced with infill redevelopment. “If you redevelop the Southlands, it’s not going to be affordable housing, it will be luxury townhomes. I’m in favour of innovation to use present residential land more wisely so we take the pressure off farmland and also natural areas,” she
said. The majority of residents would like to see the Southlands back in the ALR, she said. Maria DeVries said every proposal should be considered in light of how it will affect South Delta as a whole. Unfortunately, she noted, South Delta does not have an up-to-date plan that outlines what residents may envision for the community in the coming decades. Without an official plan, which should include a transportation plan and an agricultural plan, Delta can only react to proposals instead of guiding them, DeVries said. Once a master plan is established, proposals like the Southlands would be evaluated and discussed in light of the overall plan, she added. Sandeep Pandher said the long-term vision of the property should also reflect the long-term needs and desires of the community. “That’s the level of debate we need to have. We need to have it in a nonhostile fashion where we can resolve, ‘This is what we want as a community and Mr. Landowner, this is how we’d like to work with you to get to that point.’” Ray Robinson said his biggest concern is that such a development could be considered without first having a discussion on how to add the additional social infrastructure, including more recreational amenities, that would be needed and who will pay for it.
council could make further changes, added McDonald. Century Group president Sean Hodgins said he would have liked to have
seen a more pro-active policy for the property. “Thirty years ago they took the land out (of the ALR) with the specific
rational that it was unsuitable to have one large piece of industrial agriculture in the centre of the community, and instead developing
some of it to get community benefit. Thirty years later we’re still examining that topic in a divided community.”
SANDOR GYARMATI
The future of the Southlands is the most controversial issue for the eight candidates in the upcoming municipal by-election. The Optimist asked each candidate, vying for the vacant council seat in the Sept. 18 race, their positions on the Tsawwassen property that has dominated the headlines in South Delta this year. The candidates were asked for their views on the development proposal put forward by the Century Group, which includes a mix of housing and urban agriculture, and the future of the land. Amy Ghuman Sara said she believes leadership and vision are required to deal with the Southlands. “The Southlands issue is a symptom of a larger question: What is going to be the future of not only Tsawwassen, but of Delta? “It will take leadership and vision to deal with how the issue of the use of designated agricultural land for potentially nonagricultural use will impact Delta for the next 50 years and beyond, not merely today. Simply saying no to development, so that you may acquire some votes, is not leadership; and it lacks vision,” she said. Sylvia Bishop has already clearly voiced her opposition to housing on the Southlands, saying the land should never have been removed from the ALR. Saying politics is to
blame for its removal from the reserve, Bishop believes the Southlands has several options, including being a place to train the next generation of soil-based farmers. “The young farmers I’ve spoken to talk about how expensive it is to purchase farmland. No wonder when we keep developing it.” Peter Harms, meanwhile, said he thoroughly reviewed the Century Group proposal and believes it’s the right development for the community, providing much needed housing for seniors

Groups warn ‘toxic ash’ coming to local landfill BY
OPENING HOURS

If the current Metro Vancouver solid waste plan goes forward, all the toxic ash from incinerating garbage would be dumped at the Vancouver Landfill, warns the Wilderness Committee and Burns Bog Conservation Society. The two groups issued a press release this week warning about potential environmental contamination to Burns Bog that would result from residual ash from a waste-to-energy facility, a key component of the regional district’s new solid waste plan. They say approximately 150,000 tonnes of “toxic ash” could end up at the East Ladner landfill each year. The groups say fly ash from the scrubbers in the Burnaby incinerator is taken to Cache Creek, where the process to neutralize it doesn’t appear to be working as well as Metro Vancouver staff claim. A 2009 annual report from Wastech, the company that manages the Cache Creek landfill, shows there is reason to be concerned about heavy metals and potentially other toxins being released from treated incinerator ash, according to the two groups. “We need (Environment) Minister (Barry) Penner to take a closer look at what is planned before letting these toxins get anywhere close to the bog,” said Eliza Olson,
president of the Burns Bog Conservation Society. The Vancouver Landfill would be the only landfill left in the region and would be the only facility currently in place to deal with the ash, which would grow annually, warned Ben West, Wilderness Committee Healthy Communities campaigner.
“I don’t know where they would get the idea it is toxic. Their claim it would be highly toxic ash is simply untrue.”
Dennis Ranahan
West, whose group is formerly known as the Western Canada Wilderness Committee, said he doesn’t understand Delta Mayor and Metro chair Lois Jackson’s logic for allowing the plan to move forward. Metro senior engineer Dennis Ranahan confirmed the ash from waste-to-energy would go the Vancouver Landfill. However, he said it wouldn’t be toxic and the environmental groups have their facts all wrong. “First of all, from the Ministry of Environment perspective, the ash currently produced from the existing Burnaby waste incineration plant is regarded as regular solid waste and it goes to the Cache Creek landfill. Some of that goes to the Vancouver Landfill,
where ash is used to replace aggregates at the landfill,” he said. The environmental groups say new reports found that bottom ash from the Burnaby incinerator that’s currently taken to the Vancouver Landfill, and used in road construction and landfill cover, show there may be reasons for significant concern. Noting the groups did not understand the reports, Ranahan said the use of ash meets rigorous environmental criteria that considers potential health risks. “I don’t know where they would get the idea it is toxic. Their claim it would be highly toxic ash is simply untrue. “It’s being perpetuated that garbage is toxic and ash is highly toxic, which is not reflective of the fact.” The draft solid waste plan, which requires Ministry of Environment approval, would see a 70 per cent waste diversion from landfills by 2015. Currently, the Vancouver Landfill takes in 600,000 tonnes of garbage annually, said Ranahan, who noted that amount would drop to around 100,000 by 2020. The residual ash going to the Vancouver Landfill would be in addition to the 100,000 tonnes of waste, he added. The City of Vancouver, which operates the landfill in East Ladner, voted against the draft solid waste plan.

KinVillage has become campus of care Opened 30 years ago, Tsawwassen centre has evolved to meet changing needs of community’s seniors SANDOR GYARMATI
There have been a lot of changes at an important local hub for seniors since it opened its doors 30 years ago. Now called KinVillage, the Kinsmen Retirement Centre in Tsawwassen was one of the most eagerly anticipated projects when it opened in 1980. Today, KinVillage consists of a 101-bed intermediate care home, a 12,172-square-foot community centre, an apartment building with 97 subsidized independent living apartments, another building with 45 senior supportive housing units and a third building with 68 assisted living suites. The centre is also home to an adult day program and ElderCollege Delta. The centre, at 5430-10th Ave., refers to itself as a campus of care, meeting the different needs of seniors as those become more complex. “KinVillage continues to serve the community and continues to adapt in response to changing needs in the community and strengths in the community, and that’s what we need to continue doing in the future,” said Donna Ellis, who took over as CEO last December. In May 1980, then B.C. premier Bill Bennett officially opened the first two phases of the Kinsmen Retirement Centre, a $2.3 million intermediate care centre and a $683,000 recreational facility. During
the opening ceremony, the premier made a surprise announcement of $850,000 in government funding for the proposed third phase, a 110-unit apartment complex that would go ahead thanks to the funding boost. Noting seniors had been calling in large numbers wanting one of the apartments, an elated project chairman Bill Mosier at the time described the undertaking as “a total community effort.” “The response of the government wouldn’t be there if it wasn’t for the support of the entire community,” Bennett added. Then MLA Water Davidson echoed those comments, saying the real credit deserved to go to the people who didn’t have the responsibility to provide such a centre, but who took on the task anyway. Plans for the centre, located near the northwest corner of Winskill Park, began six years earlier when the Kinsmen Club of Ladner and Tsawwassen agreed to sponsor the threephase project. The provincial government eventually agreed to pay the $2.5 million cost of the intermediate care home and one-third of the cost of the recreational facility. The remaining two-thirds of the recreation centre’s cost was shared equally by the Kinsmen and Delta. Fast-forward three decades and the centre is much different. In addition to several physical improvements and new recreational activities, the model has undergone alterations.

In the past few years, two of the three apartment buildings have undergone major transformations. The idea was to have different levels of living arrangements at KinVillage, from completely independent to supported and assisted living, to extended care beds, all in the same area. It’s to give seniors a chance to live on their own longer and stay in their own communities. Former CEO Brian Kines told the Optimist that before the new levels of care were introduced, the only alternative for older people who may not be able to live fully independently as they were when they were younger was to wait for a bed in the care home. The seniors supportive housing — the Margaret Vidal Court — offers some basic services for residents, including one meal per day and cleaning services.
The assisted living units, meanwhile, offer two meals per day and some personal care. The care home remains a facility where residents receive round-theclock professional nursing care, but now residents who reside there are only those who can’t live even semiindependently. One residential building remains as a subsidized apartment building that continues to offer basic tenancy without the extra

services. While many renovations have been done over the years, Ellis noted that apartment building will require upgrades to modernize it. Improvements are also being eyed for the care home. “The care of home was built 30 years ago when the needs of people there compared to today are quite different. There’s been some renovations done over time, but it’s not designed the

way a building would be designed now to meet the needs of the kind of people who are living there,” she explained. As far as the recreation centre, Ellis said they hope to eventually upgrade and expand it as well. “That will probably be part of looking at the overall campus in terms of what we need, what’s the best way to accomplish that and how and where would we get funding.” Ellis said changing the identity to KinVillage is a message it isn’t just a retirement centre but a community within a community. People are invited to take part in the programs, special events or volunteer as well as donate. “One of the strengths of KinVillage is that we have a very broad range of services,” said Ellis. “In addition to the buildings where people live, we also have an adult day program and the community centre is a real asset to the community.” For more information about KinVillage, visit www.kinsmen.vcn.bc.ca or call 604-943-0155.

MURPHY’S LAW The anti-HST folks don’t need to stoke the fire when they’ve got the Liberals and the bureaucracy doing it for them. The petition against the harmonized sales tax orchestrated by Fight HST was never going to be successful legislatively thanks to the way the initiative law is structured. Even if a bill prompted by the 700,000-name petition is introduced in the legislature, the ruling Liberals can either let it die on the floor or quash it in a vote. The best the anti-HST folks can hope for is to use the petition, and its prodigious signature count, to shame the provincial government into following the wishes of its constituents. Although there were rules to follow and signature thresholds to meet, the official process was never going to bear fruit, so their best bet to get rid of the harmonized sales tax was to make the government look bad. And that’s exactly what they’re getting thanks to Elections B.C.’s decision not to even send the petition to the legislature despite confirming that it meets the required 10 per cent of voters in all 85 ridings. The rationale being offered is because the issue is before the courts, including a challenge by Liberal-friendly big business, but that hardly seems like valid justification for stymieing a movement backed by more than 700,000 British Columbians, a total that’s roughly half of all those who voted in last year’s provincial election. The decision smacks of political interference, even if by some chance there wasn’t any, which is earning Gordon Campbell and Co. more negative press on the HST front. Given it’s the court of public opinion where Bill Vander Zalm and the rest of the Fight HST group will do its real damage with the petition, not sending it to the legislature just gives them more ammunition. Perhaps the Liberals were hoping Elections B.C. would take the fall on this one, just as they look to health authorities and school boards to do when it comes to dispensing bad news in those areas, but, as always, it’s not too difficult to follow the dots back to Victoria. Regardless of how this chapter unfolds, it’s the recall campaigns, which Fight HST is poised to commence, that have the ability to make a difference. Recall is a tough nut to crack, but with such widespread anger, the possibility to unseat several MLAs, and the government as a whole, does exist. If it gets to that point, it’ll have the Liberals wishing for the good ol’ days when all they had to worry about was bad press.
Information lives in perpetuity once posted to the Internet NATHALIE HEIBERGHARRISON
COMMUNITY COMMENT Have you ever Googled the name of someone you knew, just to see what you would find? Or looked through all the vacation photos of an acquaintance, just because they were up on Facebook? The Internet is a funny thing like that. It’s the keeper of all information — superfluous, embarrassing, telling — and everything is there for the curious, fortuitous or resourceful to find. What some people don’t know is that, for the most part, it’s up there for good. Things on the Internet, as a general rule, don’t disappear. Usually, they’re just forgotten. So then what happens when a church, from Tsawwassen, posts a blog on Facebook called “Gay is Not Okay?” Well, first, you read lines like
this: “You may hear that homosexuality is ‘not’ a choice. Trust me. This view is based on flawed studies. And what you won’t hear is about the physical and emotional devastation that comes through homosexual lifestyles. It is not an ‘alternative lifestyle.’ It is an ‘unhealthy alternative lifestyle.’” Then, if you’ve been raised in a household that doesn’t just promote tolerance, but also acceptance and open-mindedness and love, you have the following feelings: Why is being gay or bisexual or bi-curious or bi-whatever still an issue in the 21st century? And why are we still letting people come to physical and emotional devastation because their sexual orientations are viewed as “ unhealthy alternative lifestyles?” It’s no wonder most gay people raised in South Delta come out only after they’ve graduated, or moved away to Vancouver or university or somewhere else. Part of it is the pressures of high school, yes, and part of it is just figuring it out in the first place, but the rest is the perception that here, in our nice little suburban community, it is not OK or not socially acceptable to

be gay. Posts like this, on a social networking site that anyone can access, reinforce this belief. In actuality, straight people have gay children all the time. Straight, religious people even have gay children, believe it or not, and women fall in love with women and men fall in love with men. And then, some straight people fall out of love. This happens with gay people too. In the words of Jerry Seinfeld: “...not that there’s anything wrong with that.” In fact, there’s nothing wrong with any of these scenarios, it’s just the way it is. I find it weird, actually, to be writing about this in the first place. Sexual orientation is just a fraction of who someone is, and when I meet someone or forge a friendship, it’s a non-factor in determining someone’s character. The anonymous author, whose words were posted on the South Delta Baptist Church’s Facebook page April 27 by the way, added these words: “I don’t like writing about this subject. I wish it would go away.” At least we agree on one thing.

And that, it seems is all the chief electoral officer needed to determine the matter (anti-HST petition, not my character) was before the courts. Ergo, all actions are frozen. (On reflection, perhaps that’s appropriate, marking the demise of Ladner as a separate entity within Delta.) Whatever the rationale, I don’t like the new sign. “Put back the heron!” should be the rallying cry of those who feel as I do. I’m going to be sure to ask the candidates at the upcoming by-election for their positions on returning the heron to its rightful place. Editor: I have no idea what prompted the recent removal of the “Welcome to Ladner” sign along Ladner Trunk Road with its distinctive great blue heron motif, but it smacks of the bureaucratic mantra, “We know what’s best for you.” Or perhaps the other one, “Jobs for the boys” (or rather “persons” in this PC age). The heron has been a welcoming sign to Ladner for many years, at least 20 to my knowledge. It has been replaced by what looks like a tombstone.
Editor: Because the HST issue is ‘before the courts,’ I won’t do anything. I won’t even follow the law. That is, in effect, the stated reason for the chief electoral officer not forwarding the anti-HST petition to the legislature. And I, for one, thank him profusely. It affords me the excuse not to pay the tax. The HST is before the courts, after all. Out of respect for the legal system, I simply can’t

Campbell. Most British Columbians understand that history doesn’t necessarily translate into any kind of consistent environmental integrity. Polls taken after the Tsawwassen First Nation treaty vote showed 58 per cent of NDP members opposed their MLA’s support for the treaty because of its inherent destruction of farmland. Every poll taken over the past 10 years consistently shows that 90 per cent of British Columbians support the protection the province’s very limited foodlands. Important Bird Areas. When I read Sandor Gyarmati’s piece I felt depressed. Yet again we have the media pandering to public appetites for conflict and ignoring the opportunities to really get under the issues. Fortunately, Gentner did not. “I believe in the virtues of maintaining food security here in the Lower Mainland,” he told your reporter. Gentner understands that in a province that, by its own government’s estimations, requires 240,000 additional acres of irrigated farmland than it has, it can’t afford to be paving 500 acres of prime farmland. As for Mike Harcourt, I don’t know where he got this “sustainability guru” image. Perhaps when he took that unfortunate tumble off the cliff he forgot he was the premier who authorized the destruction of Clayoquot Sound that brought more than 100,000 protestors from around the world and put the B.C. forest industry under an international magnifying glass that it never fully got over. True, he was mayor of Vancouver during a time when it did some sustainable things. So was Gordon

Editor: Re: NDPers differ over Southlands, June 12 There is a great quote by David Suzuki that goes something like, “We’re in a car, heading toward a brick wall and everyone’s arguing about where they want to sit.” While he’s talking about climate change, the Southlands proposal is equally stupid in the face of the food security crisis. Guy Gentner gets that. It’s not about partisanship. It’s who he is. Gentner was on the board of the Burns Bog Conservation Society long before he ran for political office. Unlike a lot of politicians, Gentner doesn’t engage in greenspeak to win votes. He ran for office so he could have a greater impact on public policy, and in particular on the issues of farmland and environment. He knows the world is expected to lose 25 per cent of its species to climate change in the next 50 to 100 years, and that we have to do all we have to protect wildlife, including not paving 500 acres of extremely significant wildlife habitat in Boundary Bay, number one of Canada’s 587 internationally designated

question and he adds me to an informal list that goes to the speaker. Over the months there have been glitches, but we have ironed them out with respect and goodwill. For instance, I prefer to ask my question by Wednesday, so I can meet community paper deadlines. I do not go last, so that I don’t risk losing my follow-up (supplemental) question (as once happened). If my question is urgent to Delta South, I will ask to go that day. Our informal and cooperative system seems to work well for all concerned.
Statements by members are opportunities to speak on a subject usually, but not always, of local interest. I have delivered a number of statements, including Delta Hospice Society, the Tour de Delta, Edgar Dunning and Delta’s very own B.C. Guide Dog Services. I have also asked many questions important to Delta South during estimates and I have received substantive, productive responses on topics such as B.C. Ferries, the South Fraser Perimeter Road, funding for organizations, etc.

Grand old time You’ve probably seen the bumper sticker at some point in your life: “If I knew grandchildren were so much fun, I’d have had them first.” My wife and I are blessed with four beautiful grandchildren — and just remember ours are much more beautiful than anyone else’s! We had the privilege — and I mean privilege — of camping with just our two oldest grandchildren (girl, 9, boy, 6) for a week during our summer vacation. What a delight! We marveled at the energy and interests these two grandchildren have. Whether it was biking, nature walks, doing crafts (early in the morning), staying up late — all of it was great!
The only thing missing, regretfully, was a nice campfire. But you know what? Even that was not a big issue. Our grandchildren were wonderfully understanding of the dry weather situation, a situation that was especially brought home to them when, on several occasions, they saw the sun set like a deep orange ball due to the smoke from forest fires. Pondering our time together brought to mind these words from Proverbs 17:6: “Children’s children are a crown to the aged...” Mind you, not that my wife and I consider ourselves “aged” by any means! Grandchildren have a way of keeping us feeling young.
“All are warmly welcomed to worship with us as we Celebrate God’s Grace.”

Well summer has arrived so get your vehicle in shape now and undo the damage caused by winter driving. A qualified technician should check the tightness and condition of belts, clamps and hoses. Have engine performance problems like hard starts, rough idling and stalling corrected. You’ll get better mileage and will catch minor problems before they grow into expensive repairs later on. Change the oil and filter and replace other filters (air, fuel, PVC etc.)
Don’t neglect your transmission, costly repairs can be prevented by routine service. Check the level and the cleanliness of your transmission fluid. Check your brakes. Drive Green for good fuel economy. Avoid sudden starts and stops and go the speed limit. Jerky and aggressive driving decreases your mileage and increases wear and tear. Remember to get regular tune ups, maintenance and having clean filters will help you burn less gas, pollute less, and prevent car trouble. Many of your car components wear out over time or get damaged by hazards. Visit a repair shop for the best car maintenace. Remember to get regulat tune ups, maintenance and having clean filters will help you burn less gas, pollute less and prevent car trouble.

undreds of motorcyclists are expected to travel through South Delta next Saturday for a good cause. Motorcycle Ride for Dad - Westcoast, a fundraising event to help fight against prostate cancer, will depart from South Delta Baptist Church in Tsawwassen, head up to Ladner with a police escorted parade and then travel east to Mission. Organizers estimate about 750 riders will take part. “If the weather holds, we’ll probably exceed that as well,” says Mike Callaghan, chair of Motorcycle Ride for Dad - Westcoast. This will be the third year the organization has held an event in the Metro Vancouver area. With around $50,000 pledged so far, fundraising is going well, Callaghan notes. Last month organizers held a fundraising campaign launch event in Ladner. They also presented a $95,000 donation, from last year’s proceeds, to the Vancouver Prostate Centre. “The support that comes from the Motorcycle Ride for Dad is critical to establishing funding support to allow investigators to pursue new, novel ideas,” Michael Cox, a senior scientist at the centre, said at the event. “You can have the best idea in the world but if you don’t have the
money to do the work, you can’t even test it. They’re really making possible what can’t be done any other way.” Motorcycle Ride for Dad began in 2000 in Ontario and is now in 30 cities throughout Canada. To date more than $5 million has been raised to fight prostate cancer, the most common type of cancer in men. It’s estimated there are 1.2 million men with prostate cancer in Canada but the large majority of those cases have not yet been diagnosed. There will be a pre-registration next Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at South Delta Baptist Church, 1988-56th St. On the day of the ride, registration goes from 7 to 8:30 a.m. Registration costs $25 or it’s free with $100 or more in pledges. For more details visit www.motorcycleridefordad.org. Expected parade route through Tsawwassen and Ladner: • depart from South Delta Baptist Church, head south on 56th Street • right onto 12th Avenue • right onto 52nd Street • right onto 28th Avenue • left onto 53rd Street • right on Ladner Trunk Road • right onto 54A Street
Looking to help local caregivers Support and education offered BY

Don’t wait too long to join. That’s the message Delta Caregivers’ Network facilitator Laurie Pettman wants to get out. “What we’re trying to do is find the caregivers in the community and get them to the group as early as possible,” she says. “Quite often people don’t come until they’re in a crisis and they’re absolutely worn out and they don’t know what to do.” The local network is offering a six-week education and support group for those caring for a loved one or friend starting early next month. Topics will include caregiver stress, communication techniques, role and lifestyle changes, accessing and using community resources and legal and financial issues. Pettman, a retired nurse who’s
been with the caregivers’ network since 1998, will be leading the sessions. “Being with other caregivers is a big part of it because it helps to talk to people who understand what you’re talking about. They’ve been through the same thing,” she says. “Everything said in the group is confidential.” The network also has an ongoing support group that meets monthly. Pettman recommends beginners take part in the six-week education series first, in order to “get a primer on how the group works.” The series starts on Thursday, Sept. 9 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Centre for Supportive Care, 4631 Clarence Taylor Crescent, Ladner. The cost is $25. To register call Pettman at 604-943-3921 or the centre at 604-948-0660.

Well on Your Way I’ve never been known for my culinary skills. In fact, it wasn’t too long ago that a hot meal in our house

But, I am learning and have perfected a few recipes that are not only foolproof, but easy, healthy and yummy. Enjoy this meal without fear of the fire department dropping by. ing, or the night before, to allow chicken to marinate throughout the day. Or marinate for two hours prior to cooking. In a large re-sealable bag combine the following: 1/4 c seasoned rice vinegar 2 tbsp tamari sauce or reduced-sodium soy sauce 1 tbsp each sesame oil and extra-virgin olive oil (preferably organic) 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1 garlic clove, crushed 4 boneless, skinless grain-fed chicken breasts 1 tbsp toasted sesame seeds (place on cookie sheet and toast under broiler for a minute or so) Seal and shake first five ingredients to blend and then add chicken breasts and marinate in refrigerator for at least one-and-a-half to two hours. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Drain and bake chicken for 30 to 35 minutes, just until it is tender and no longer pink. (This recipe is also very good barbecued.) Place on plate and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds and chives. Dessert: Grilled Pineapple 1 ripe pineapple, peeled, cored and sliced into eight rings 3 tbsp unsalted organic butter, melted 1 tsp ground cinnamon Preheat grill to medium. In a small bowl, mix butter with cinnamon. Brush pineapple rings with mixture. Grill rings until soft and nicely browned, about three to four minutes per side. A great gal-loping getaway BY
I
JANE CASSIE
Optimist contributor
t’s been a few years since I’ve straddled a saddle. And though my plump rump will likely survive the trot, I’m not sure about the rest of my aging body. Trepidation mounts as the horses charge up to the podium where I stand — or shake — in my boots. The only consolation is the two other gal pals who are with me are shaking even more. We’ve come to Sun Mountain Lodge to revive, reconnect and recreate. This gem on the outskirts of Winthrop, Washington promises it all. Like a diamond in the rough, it glitters from its mountaintop home and provides every nuance of comfort known to man or womankind — posh accommodations, award-winning wine and cuisine, a spa to soothe those saddle sores and 30 head of horses to create them. Beads of sweat drip
from my brow as the galloping group invades my comfort zone. But fortunately Kit Cramer, who could pass as The Horse Whisperer, comes to the rescue. Sporting chaps, spurs and twin braids that fall from her wide-brimmed Stetson, she’s a cowgirl to the core. Even her western drawl sounds authentic. Thankfully it also calms the energized pack. “Each one of these 1,200 pounds of horsepower has a brain the size of a walnut,” she chuckles, “but they all provide a safe four-wheel drive ride.” Her wrangling expertise is matched by a sense of humor and while sauntering along the rim of Sun Mountain’s 915-metre (3,000-feet) high plateau, I’m hoping there’s truth to her gesture. Nestled in a valley far below is the western town of Winthrop, a popular tourist haunt where we’d spent the previous day. We’d strolled the creaky boardwalks, checked out empo-

riums, and uncovered past and present treasures. As with most mining towns, the gold rush boom in Winthrop was a colourful era. But once the resources dried up, so did the reasons to stay. It wasn’t revived with its Wild West flavour until 1972, after the completion of the North Cascade Highway. The elusive cowboy dream also lingers in the hearts of many who visit the lodge. How could it not? Its 3,000 embracing
acres are laced with enough trails, flower-choked meadows and jaw-dropping vistas to satisfy any Roy Roger wannabe. The Northwest feel is incorporated into all 96 rooms. Although any one of them would have heightened our stay, we had decided to go for more seclusion. We wanted to wine, dine and have diva downtime without any interruptions. And our fully-equipped, home-style cabin at nearby Patterson Lake was cer-
tainly filling the bill. From our promontory trail we have a great view of this lake. Later, we’ll catch up on sleep, yack on our sun-splashed veranda and sing along with John Denver. If we still have energy we can try fly fishing, river rafting, kayaking or check out the hiking and biking trails that weave over this terrain. But there’s still more riding to do! Our final point of interest is the Hough Homestead, a landmark that dates back to the late 1800s. As well as a few relics from the past, there are picnic tables ready for tonight’s Cowboy Camp Dinner. “Why not join us?” Kit asks when we get back to the ranch. “There’ll be singing ‘round the campfire and a fabulous spread of food.” Although steak, baked beans and all the fixings sound finger-lickin’ good, we have our hearts set on some award-winning fare for this final night. Above all, though, comfort comes first. After prying our duffs
off the saddles, we make a bow-legged bee-line for the spa. While Sue gets her dusty pinkies pedicured and Carol has her jostled spine massaged, I go for a treatment that’s most needed these days — an anti-aging facial. With Kazia at the helm, my pores are cleansed, exfoliated, massaged and masked. I’m pretty sure her grand finale head massage produces a snore. An hour later we all emerge in Zen-like states. Decadence continues in the restaurant where we later dine and wine. While soaking in the lush Methow Valley view, and grazing on gastronomic goodies, we raise our glasses for one final toast: “Here’s to revival, reconnection and recreation — and one great gal-loping getaway.” Travel Writers’ Tales is an independent travel article syndicate that offers professionally written travel articles to newspaper editors and publishers. k a B c to School Skip Boring School Lunches: Easy Meal Ideas Students Will Love A brown paper bag or a plastic lunch box. No two items can elicit such fear in the hearts of parents across the country. They seem like harmless items on the surface, but it’s coming up with what goes inside can be truly scary. Day after day, creating new lunch ideas that children will actually eat can be challenging. Parents are often short on time in the evening or the morning before the bus arrives and may be at a loss as to what foods to keep stocked in the pantry, which makes planning lunches a taller order than it may seem. Rest assured that concocting school lunches doesn’t have to be difficult. Follow these tips for lunchtime success.
• Think outside the bread. Bread can be boring. Skip the sandwiches and think of other foods that can serve as the wrapping for tasty foods. Tortillas, pitas, pizza crusts, and crackers are other ideas for topping or holding items together. What’s more, rolling up a tortilla or topping your own pizza is much more fun than biting into that standard PB&J sandwich. • Make it fun. Pack lunch according

your child to pick the combination he or she desires each day. Involving children in meal creation helps make them more in tune with food choices and more likely to eat what they have chosen. • Who says lunch has to be “lunch?” Instead of packing the requisite lunch foods, consider breakfast items instead. Maybe your child will enjoy a banana wrapped in a pancake or yogurt topped with crunchy granola. A mini bagel packaged with an individual serving of cream cheese and jelly could fit the bill, too. As long as your child is eating a healthy, balanced meal, it doesn’t matter what the foods may be.

Due to mites and pesticides, honeybees are vanishing in many countries. As suppliers of honey, they are absolutely irreplaceable, but pollination in home gardens isn’t a lost cause because other members of the bee family can do it very effectively. The crucial thing gardeners can do is make gardens welcoming for these lesserknown but hard-working bees. Bumblebees, for instance, are resistant to the dreaded varroa mite that has decimated many honeybee hives. Other mites also attack bumblebees, but most weaken rather than kill outright. These bees are willing to work in temperatures below 50F (10C) — unlike honeybees that don’t stir until temperatures are above 60F (16C). Bumblebees are good-tempered and their stings, while extremely rare, are very painful when they do occur. They work commercially in greenhouses pollinating tomatoes and sometimes peppers and cucumbers. Bumblebees are said to adapt well to greenhouses since they have senior moments and forget where they used to live. All they need for a nest is a hole in the ground. This could be an old mouse hole or a hole under a board, or

They usually begin pollinating during the first warm spell in February but die off by mid-June, leaving eggs behind. In nature, each egg is sealed off in a plant stem or hole in a tree. By spring, the eggs have gone through a larval stage and transformed into large blueblack hairy mason bees resembling bluebottles. For gardeners, the tube houses sold in early spring in garden centres can be

placed on a house or shed wall for use by mason bees. Many commercial tube houses are wooden, sandwich-type blocks that have been scooped out with a router so they form tubes when the layers are together. Others are moulded plastic. Those first cocoons are clean and viable. Yearly maintenance involves taking the tube houses apart and discarding the dirty looking cocoons because they will contain mites. The others can be placed outside in a birthing box (like a small birdhouse) to await warm weather. People in rural areas may find they can simply put mason bee tube houses on a house or shed wall and mason bees from the wild will lay eggs in the tubes. So will leaf-cutter bees. These are great pollinators working late into the summer when mason bees have vanished. You can identify their tubes because they are sealed with green chewed up leaves. Mason bee tubes are sealed with grey mud. Wasps also pollinate, though not very successfully because they’re too smooth to carry pollen well. But tiny wasps and large yellow-jackets visit flowers to eat the nectar and so some pollination happens anyway. All pollinating insects are attracted to gardens where a shallow body of water has perching places or moist soil around the edge. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. Sidekick offers subscription series Theatre company’s 14th season starts with Jacques Plante play at arts centre The Sidekick Players Club, Delta’s award-winning theatre company, is offering a subscription series for its 2010/2011 season at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. For the first time in 14 years, Sidekick has to raise its ticket prices. The subscription series prices are based on the 2009/2010 rates. The special early bird deal for subscription deadline is Aug. 31. This 14th season is packed with first-class entertainment and kicks off with a Canadian play, Jacques Plante and the Parkdale Knitting League, by Paul McLaughlin. This is the story of Plante and his relationship with his coach, his wife, his sport and his knitting. Yes, Plante knitted his own toques and undershirts. Throughout Plante’s career he was plagued with recurring asthma and after missing 13 games due to a sinusitis operation, the goalie began wearing a mask in
practices in 1956. Coach Toe Blake endorsed the move cautiously because it kept his goalie healthy and happy, but he warned Plante that a mask wasn’t permitted during games. However, during a Montreal versus New York game on Nov. 2, 1959, Plante was hit in the face by a shot by Andy Bathgate. He went off to the dressing room for stitches and when he returned, he was wearing a mask. Blake was livid, but he had no other goalie to call upon and Plante refused to return to the goal unless he kept the mask. Blake agreed on condition Plante discard the mask when the cut had healed. In the ensuing days Plante refused, and as the team continued to win, Blake became less obstinate. The Montreal record stretched into an 18-game unbeaten streak and the mask was in the NHL for good.

Giants prepare for 10th season WHL franchise set to open training camp next week at Ladner Leisure Centre as it marks decade anniversary The Vancouver Giants are set to begin training camp next Friday at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The Western Hockey League team will mark its 10th anniversary this season. This off-season has been eventful for the franchise, which counts local businessman Ron Toigo as its majority owner. Stuart Ballantyne, the general manager of Molson’s Hockey Canada House during the 2010 Winter Olympics, was introduced as the team’s chief operating officer in June while Dan Elliott was named as the club’s new media relations director and radio play-by-play voice earlier this week. There were also reports of both head coach Don Hay and general manager Scott Bonner talking to the Edmonton Oilers about moving to the NHL and then each ending up deciding to stay with Vancouver. In July the Giants traded winger JT Barnett to the Kamloops Blazers for a 2011 second round draft pick. He scored 21 goals and 17 assists in 71 games last season. “JT had a great year last season with our club, however over the last three or four seasons we’ve

The Vancouver Giants will begin training camp at the Ladner Leisure Centre next week. traded away quite a few draft choices in an effort to make a run and sooner or later this will catch up to you, so we had the chance to acquire a high pick and decided to take advantage of that,” Bonner told the team’s website. Tsawwassen’s Brendan
Gallagher, Vancouver’s leading goal scorer last season, had a busy summer as well. He was invited to attend Hockey Canada’s National Junior Team development camp was selected in the fifth round of the NHL entry draft by the Montreal Canadiens.
The Giants have three exhibition games scheduled next month at the Ladner Leisure Centre. There will be a pair of home and home sets with the Kelowna Rockets and Chilliwack Bruins while the Everett Silvertips will also pay a visit to Ladner.
Home preseason schedule: • Kelowna at Vancouver Friday, Sept. 3 at 7:30 p.m. • Chilliwack at Vancouver - Friday, Sept. 10 at 7:30 p.m. • Everett at Vancouver Saturday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. Regular season action
begins on Friday, Sept. 24 at 7:30 p.m. with Vancouver’s home opener at the Pacific Coliseum against Chilliwack. The Giants will raise their fifth-straight B.C. Division Championship banner to the rafters before the game.
Short & Pearson named to Canadian roster for Commonwealth Games world rankings. Short, 38, and Pearson, 23, both played for Canada at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Short, a two-time Olympian who plays professionally in Holland, is headed into his fourth Commonwealth Games and was named to the International Hockey Federation (FIH) World All-
Star Team last year. Pearson is one of the upand-coming players with the national team program. The Canadian men’s team will open the competition on Tuesday, Oct. 5, against South Africa. The team will also face England, Trinidad and Tobago, and New Zealand to wrap up the pool round. “The Commonwealth
Games field includes many of the top 12 teams in the world and will provide our younger players with a perfect opportunity to perform against quality opposition and gain valuable experience towards our qualification for the 2012 Olympic Games,” said Hari Kant, men’s high performance director for Field Hockey Canada.

Bronze finish for Red Sox
The Ladner Red Sox Single A Mosquito All Star team ended a successful summer season by earning a bronze medal at the provincial tournament in North Delta. The journey for this talented group of players started at the seasonopening tournament at Cloverdale. They came up short in the round robin, losing to a tough team from Abbotsford that went on to win the final. During the rest of the season, the talented group of 10-year-olds played tough defence and delivered
clutch hits, which allowed it to finish with a 6-0 record. The Red Sox opened the provincials with a win over Rutland, but lost their next game, to longtime rivals from Cloverdale, on a threerun homer. In order to assure a spot in the semi-finals, the feisty group had to win its next two games and did just that with victories over Chilliwack and Victoria. In the semi-finals, the Red Sox fell to Abbotsford, dropping into the third place game against Richmond. They came away with the bronze medal game thanks, in part,
to a walk off home run from Payton De Luca. Coaches Kal Phagura, Bruce Mackenzie and Raj Prasad would like to thank the kids for their enthusiasm and continuous hard work. They would also like to recognize the dedication and commitment put forth by a great group of parents. The roster includes: Jared Baltzer, Matthew Dahlen, Payton De Luca, Ryan Mackenzie, Markus Niebhur, Kieran Phagura, Ethan Prasad, Will Raderacht, Tyler Sanders, Josh Spencer, Michael Tersigni and Denae Turko.

MULLEN, Donald James After years of contending with serious health issues, Don peacefully passed on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at Hogg Pavilion/Peace Arch Hospital in White Rock, BC. Don grew up on a farm near Fork River, Manitoba. He loved to travel back to Manitoba and visit everyone. Being an excellent electrician, he was transferred from Winnipeg to Vancouver in 1967, to oversee the wiring of the Board of Trade Building on West Hastings Street. Don and his family chose to live in Ladner. He loved to go golfing with his friends and wished he had started golfing at least 20 years earlier. He also loved boating and fishing, so much so that he tried ‘commercial fishing’ for a few years. Don loved his family and was proud of their endeavors and accomplishments. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Roberta, their children; daughter Colleen (James Strachan), son Brad, daughter Debbie (Garth Davies) and grandchildren Alexander and Sarah, Sebi, Leila and Keeley. Don will also be lovingly remembered by three generations of nieces and nephews of his brother Roy, who predeceased him, and by many cousins and friends living across Canada. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, August 28th, 2010 at 1:00 PM at Benediction Lutheran Church 5575 6th Avenue, Tsawwassen, BC. A “Celebration of Life” gathering to follow at 2:30 PM at 5055 Whitworth Crescent North, Ladner, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations in Don’s memory may be made to BC Heart & Stroke Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Diabetes Association.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Rest, lie low, contemplate, be charitable and spiritual now to late September. Don’t start new projects before Sept. 12. Anticipate delays, mistakes in administrative duties and government, institutional links. A tax or other neglected matter might return to demand completion. But in general, life will flow smoothly, your romantic progress (if you’re in one) pleases, life is sweet and nostalgic! (If you’re single, unattached, late January to early summer 2011 will bring a lucky partnership opening.) Romance, creative urges Sunday/Monday; exciting meetings Friday/Saturday. Work, mid-week.
Taurus April 20-May 20: Reject new starts, projects and relationships before Sept. 12. Loads of work streams your way, but there’s satisfaction, even affection in this. Also, a month of romance, pleasure, charming kids, speculation and beauty starts now! You’ll have lots of relief from all those duties. (But keep your eye on the ball, for late September will bring another basket of chores.) Your status/career meet luck Sunday (best) and Monday. Social joys, optimism, happiness and entertainment arrive Tuesday to Thursday. Your “destined love” is “around.” An old flame? Lie low, rest late week.
Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Projects, relationships and ventures begun before Sept. 12 will almost certainly meet overwhelming mistakes, indecision and delays. So stick with the ongoing, or past situations, especially in earnings and spending – an area that will generally be fortunate for the four weeks ahead. (An “unseen destiny” aids you in money areas midweek.) Double-check amounts on cheques, change at the store, watch your wallet, etc. Relationships demand (and reward) your attention Sunday (best) and Monday. Secrets, intimacy, lust, investments, debt, mid-week. Gentle love, wisdom Friday/ Saturday.
Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Start no important new projects, ventures, relationships before Sept. 12. That might be difficult, as your mind naturally travels to the future for the next four weeks – you’re optimistic! Well, enjoy the state. Your popularity grows, social joys enter, entertainment, flirtations abound. A former lover or sweet friend might return. It’s fun and full of bounce, so don’t say no. But on a deeper level, the love here will raise issues of “deep duty,” perhaps of burden, or ”sweet sorrow.” You decide what’s worth what. Duties, sweet or not, appear Sunday/Monday, Friday/Saturday. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: A former job, career contact, parenting role, or status position might return now to Sept. 12. (“Destiny” aids here mid-week.) But don’t start brand new projects or relationships, especially in these areas. Instead, seize that past opportunity, or stick with ongoing ventures, while protecting them from delays, mistakes and misunderstood communications. Your social life remains happy, upbeat. A light, flirtatious romance could arrive (perhaps Thursday night through Saturday) – or better, an ongoing one thrives. (A brand new relationship will tend to stay light, not “grow.”)

Cancer June 21-July 22: Start nothing new before Sept. 12. Sunday begins four weeks of travel, communications, errands, curiosity, casual acquaintances, siblings, paperwork, news, and “daily business.” A busy, not important time. It’s busy partly because these activities (travel, communications, etc.) meet delays, misses, mistakes, forgetfulness. Keep a running “to do” list, take a list when shopping, etc. Your home, kids, a security or realty project remain front-and-centre. Finances, intimacy, lifestyle decisions favoured Sunday/Monday. Gentle love, wisdom mid-week. Ambition, Friday/Saturday.
Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Your energy and charisma soar this week through the next few, Virgo. But don’t start big new (or even small important) projects, nor relationships, before Sept. 12. So that leaves you in a bind: you’re in the best start time of the year energywise, and one of the worst circumstantially. Solution: seize something incomplete or abandoned from the past, and revive it. Best (past) place to look: earnings, money, possessions, rote learning, memory, a sensual contact, financial investment/debt, sexual bond, lifestyle change. Work’s lucky Sunday, relationships and travel lucky Tuesday/Wednesday.

Aries March 21 - April 19: A month of work and health issues begins Sunday. Yet your main experience will be pleasure this week. Sunday/ Monday feature social delights, happiness (attraction) in love, optimism, entertainment and wish fulfilment! Thursday night through Saturday boost your energy and charisma. (Saturday might bring a further development to Sunday/Monday’s attraction.) This week subtly furthers your (fortunate) destiny in work, career, and ultimately, finances. Even your “down time,” Tuesday to Thursday eve, flows smoothly: rest, think. Remember, start nothing major before Sept. 12.
Gemini May 21-June 20: Delay all new starts – especially in domestic, realty, Mother Nature and security spheres – until Sept. 12. You’ll be tempted to “jump early” in those domestic, realty (etc.) areas, as they grow large for the next four weeks. Let events evolve: destiny is on your side, especially financially. Romance (or the lack thereof) remains a strong secondary note. Love’s opportunities exist right into mid-September. However, better now if it’s an old flame – perhaps from a former neighbourhood. Love and/or friendship are favoured Sunday/Monday and Thursday night to Saturday. Mid-week, be ambitious.

August 22 - 28 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Start nothing new before Sept. 12. A former educational, publishing, cultural, love, international, legal or intellectual interest, project or situation might return. (Or you daydream about it/him/her.) Returning to the past can reward. If an old flame returns, a strong “career” or ambition streak is involved – e.g., he/she perhaps was once your boss, or a major client. Chase money Sunday (best) and Monday. Travel, communications mid-week – a turn of destiny could bring, aid, one of those educational, international, etc. things! Let things end Thursday night through Saturday. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: A former investment, debt, secret, sexual, research, lifestyle, criminal/ police, diagnostic or health situation could reappear before Sept. 12. It’s generally favourable, could be a doorway to profit, satisfaction. But think before you leap. During the same interval, start nothing new, especially in these areas. You’re going be dealing with heavy themes, serious matters! Gentle, true love, intellectual growth, mental creativity, pleasurable travel and/or legal process – all continue. Your energy, charisma surge Sunday/Monday. (Someone has romance on the mind!) Chase money mid-week. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Avoid new starts before Sept. 12 – in projects and, especially, in relationships. You’ll have plenty to keep you busy with ongoing links – including one from the past. These might “reappear” after some absence: negotiations, litigation, a relocation, partnership or business opportunity, or even an enemy. Take everything in stride, be flexible, diplomatic. You might face a choice: To join or compete. Joining’s better, as your competition holds the aces right now. Lie low, rest, contemplate Sunday/Monday. Your charisma surges mid-week, triggering success! Money caution after Thursday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
