Officer receives national bravery award BY

A Delta police officer received a federal award for bravery this week. Const. Cal Traversy was among 17 honoured by Governor General Michaelle Jean on Tuesday. Traversy was awarded a Medal

of Bravery for rescuing his neighbours from their burning house in North Delta on Sept. 12, 2008. He had just completed his first day on the job with Delta police — he had transferred from Vancouver police department — and was offduty at the time. Hearing the sound of breaking glass, Traversy looked out his

window to see his neighbours’ sliding glass door explode as the house erupted in flames. Shouting to his wife to call 911, Traversy rushed over and pushed open the front door where he found a boy, the first of three people he would help out of the

Delta man drowns in Alouette Lake

Two Delta firefighters extinguish a fire in a dumpster behind Delta Secondary last Sunday night. At around 8 p.m. the fire department was called by residents in the area after a woman walking her dog noticed smoke coming from the dumpster. The fire was contained to the dumpster, which was used solely for cardboard waste.

A Delta man drowned in Alouette Lake over the long weekend. It was just after 6 p.m. on Monday when Ridge Meadows RCMP received a report of a missing man in the day use beach area. Four men had been swimming at the public beach when one became separated from the group. When his friends could not find him after an hour, they called police. Ridge Meadows Search and Rescue and RCMP officers responded to the call and started a search of the lake and the trails around the park. “Sadly, one hour and 15

minutes into the search a male was found under the surface of the lake in the public swimming area, a victim of drowning,” said Supt. Dave Walsh. The 19-year-old Delta man, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. Ridge Meadows RCMP and B.C. Coroners Services are investigating the incident. “His tragic death is a reminder that we must all remain vigilant when it comes to safety in the water,” Walsh said. “Wear a personal floatation device, always swim with a friend and please, take a basic CPR course. You never know when it could be you saving a life some day.”

to catch her. Then, with a jacket wrapped around his face, Traversy went back into the house a final time to make sure everyone was out. This is not the first award Traversy has received for his actions that night. In 2009, he received a Medal of Valour from the B.C. Ministry of Public Safety and Attorney General as well as a Chief Constable Award from the Delta police department.

Tsawwassen traffic study finds significant development would lead to ‘capacity problems’ BY

A 25 per cent increase in Tsawwassen’s population would result in longer waits at key intersections and the need for road improvements, according to a consultant who made a presentation last week to the Tsawwassen Area Plan Committee. Dave Turner of Halcrow Engineering presented the findings of his analysis of the community’s road network and how much additional traffic could be supported. Turner said at present there’s no real problems during the peak morning or afternoon driving times, although the afternoon period does experience higher volumes due to having more than just work and school traffic heading home. Currently, the busiest intersection is Highway 17 and 56th Street, which handles 2,650 vehicles per hour during the morning peak. During the afternoon peak, there are 3,075 vehicles per hour. Turner then outlined what key intersections would look like during the peak periods under a couple of different scenarios. The first scenario is “business as usual,” which

That scenario also takes into account development at the Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club as well as the Tsawwassen First Nation, which could add an extra 3,000 residents on the reserve in the next 10 years and 4,500 by 2031. Under the scenario, by 2031 the morning peak would see the highest increases at Highway 17 at 56th Street (25 per cent) and at 52nd Street (50 per cent).

Those intersections would see 25 per cent and 70 per cent increases, respectively, during the afternoon rush. Tuner said the network as it exists today should be adequate in handling the additional capacity under that first development scenario. The second scenario explored by the consultant has “densification” occurring within Tsawwassen, increasing the population by 25 per cent, reaching 31,950 by 2031.

By that year, the situation is much different at Highway 17 and 56th Street during the morning peak, where traffic would rise by 50 per cent as well as by 65 per cent at the highway’s junction with 52nd Street. Sizable increases would occur elsewhere, including 56th Street at 16th and 12th avenues. During the afternoon rush more large increases would occur, with the busiest intersection being Highway 17 and 52nd Street (up 85 per cent). That

year, “capacity problems” would be seen at the intersections of Highway 17 and 56th and 52nd streets, and also 16th Avenue at 56th Street. Noting motorists could end up waiting at more than one traffic light at the busiest periods at those intersections, Turner outlined various potential solutions, including extra left turn lanes at 12th Avenue and 56th Street, widening 52nd Street and additional traffic lanes at that street’s highway intersection.

Delta is looking at strategies to prepare for future flooding scenarios. A couple of years ago the municipality joined a University of B.C. study, the Local Climate Change Visioning Project, to see what could happen here depending on how various levels of carbon emission impact the climate. A federally-funded research project involving several Lower Mainland communities, the Collaborative for Advanced Landscape Planning (CALP) used visual modeling and computer techniques to come up with 3D

images of what South Delta might look like. Some of those images weren’t promising, showing areas such as Boundary Bay under a few metres of water in a worst-case scenario of rising sea levels by the next century. According to CALP, the results of the Delta visualizations will help people “move towards a deeper awareness and sense of urgency, reaching people that climate science often fails to reach, and providing clear choices for feasible actions.” Delta environmental planner Marcy Sangret said the next phase is now beginning, looking at different planning approaches.

“They completed their work visualizing different climate change scenarios and the next stage is to continue that work and identify ways it can be used for decision making for local planning,” she told the Optimist. “They’re going to be doing additional visualizations at a more refined level and will focus on adaptation and making recommendations for Delta as it relates to how to incorporate that information into guidelines, policies, bylaws, etc.” Sangret noted the municipality’s participation is all part of Delta’s ongoing climate change strategy. Delta has an extensive flood protection system

that includes dikes, large drainage ditches and pump stations. Sangret recently told Delta’s environmental advisory committee future improvements to deal with rising water levels could include raising dikes, letting waters flow in, different house forms, flood elevations for new construction and infrastructure upgrades. The CALP study will also include some cost benefit analysis, including social costs as well as financial. According to CALP, there’s an “urgent need” for governments at all levels in Canada to make decisions concerning adaptation and planning strategies for greenhouse gas reduction.

Delta, meanwhile, was also selected as one of three Canadian communities to partner in a separate study with the International Council of Local Environmental Initiatives and Natural Resources Canada, also looking at how climate change could impact the municipality. Sangret said Delta would develop an adaptation “guidebook” for local governments as part of that project that is now underway. “There’s lots of organizations which are keen to work with Delta because we’ve advanced a lot of our climate change policies and adaptation already,” she added.

Delta’s fire risk moved into the extreme category last week. On July 28, the Delta fire department moved the fire risk rating from high to extreme and it is expected to remain there for some time. “It’s going to have to rain for quite a bit to get out of extreme,” said deputy fire chief Paul Scholfield. A mild winter combined with a low snow pack and a warm dry summer have increased the risk of forest or interface fires. Last week, fire chief Dan Copeland announced a ban on all types of burning in the municipality. That includes agricultural or land clearing, residential backyard, and camp or cooking fires, including barbecues at Centennial Beach. The department has also cancelled all existing fire permits for agricultural land waste. The department is asking people to remain on the trails in Watershed Park and the nature reserve, and Burns Bog has been completely closed. Metro Vancouver and Delta fire department crews are currently conducting daily patrols of high risk areas such as the bog, Centennial Beach, the nature reserve and Watershed Park. The situation is not as bad as last year, however, when Watershed Park was completely closed to the public. Scholfield said one of the main messages to the public is to stop flicking cigarette butts out of car windows. When the conditions are this dry, it doesn’t take much to spark a fire. “We just spend so much of our energy chasing these little fires,” he said, adding they can easily turn into big fires.

40th anniversary of fatal ferry collision B.C. Ferries’ first three fatalities occurred when Soviet freighter collided with Island-bound ship in Active Pass BY

Tuesday’s accident involving a B.C. Ferries vessel was one day removed from the 40th anniversary of one of the worst days ever for the ferry service. Several were injured in this week’s mishap when the Queen of Nanaimo, making its regular run between the Gulf Islands and Tsawwassen, made a hard landing while docking at Mayne Island. The accident doesn’t compare to the carnage of Aug. 2, 1970, the day the Queen of Victoria collided with the Soviet freighter Sergey Yesenin in Active Pass. The ferry was carrying 500 passengers from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay

on Vancouver Island when the freighter sliced through the middle of it. A seven-month-old boy, his mother and a teenage girl were killed in the Sunday afternoon tragedy, while seven others were hurt. It was the first collision and first fatal accident for B.C. Ferries. The Delta Optimist reported at the time the freighter, carrying steel products and cars to Vancouver from Japan, was virtually undamaged in the crash. The ferry, a newer ship at that time, was severely damaged with a 40-foot gash in the hull. On the upper deck, sun chairs bolted to the deck were snapped like matchsticks and thrown

around. The anchor of the freighter had snapped off and jammed into the tangled superstructure of the ferry. Passengers provided horrifying accounts of the collision, including provincial court judge G. Ross Sutherland, who was travelling with his family. He said it was clear weather and, as he stood in the lounge of the bow of the ship, he could see the red star on the freighter as it came towards the ferry at what appeared to be “a good clip.” A spokesperson for the Department of Transport Port Authority said pilots took freighters through Active Pass only if conditions were favourable. warning the freighter was about to enter the pass. The two ships could not communicate by radio since they operated on different frequencies. Commenting on the mishap, Premier W.A.C Bennett said, “I am convinced it was not an intentional accident.” The ferry was taken to drydock in North Vancouver for repairs. With 182,500 sailings per year, there have been only a few collisions in the 50 years of B.C. Ferries. Those accidents include a 1992 crash involving the Queen of Alberni, sailing out of Tsawwassen, which ran into a Japanese freighter, injuring 17 passengers. According to B.C. Ferries, passenger safety is its highest priority and the corporation either meets or exceeds the safety standards established by Transport Canada. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Tsawwassen ferry terminal.

Flamenco dance teacher and performer Beverley Mantovani took home the Mentor of the Arts award at last weekend’s Tsawwassen Sun Festival. “I was absolutely honoured to receive it and I had no idea I was getting it. It was a big surprise,” said Mantovani. “I wouldn’t be receiving it if it wasn’t for the support from my students.” She runs Los Gitanos School of Spanish Dance in Tsawwassen and has around

55 students. Mantovani, originally from South Africa, started the school in 2003. “Her artistry has moved a lot of people in both the dance world and community at large,” said Dave McIlroy, who organized the stage entertainment at the Sun Festival. Mantovani joined the Luisa Cortes Spanish Dance Theatre as a principal dancer in 1976 and performed professionally throughout South Africa and abroad after joining the Mercedes Molina Dance Company. She started a dance

The Tsawwassen Sun Festival Committee presented the award while the Tsawwassen Business Association presented a monetary gift to Michael Clark, one of the students at Los Gitanos. Clark has already volunteered to invest his gift back into the studio, McIlroy said.

muscles to those who have lost theirs to ALS, raising awareness and funds for the ALS Society of B.C. patient services. ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease, is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects the person’s motor neurons that carry

messages to the muscles resulting in weakness and wasting in arms, legs, mouth, throat and elsewhere; typically the person is immobilized or deceased within two to five years of the initial diagnosis. ALS is always fatal. There is no known cause or cure.

MURPHY’S LAW All things being equal, I can see where burning garbage may be preferable to landfilling it. The trouble I have, and why I take issue with Metro Vancouver’s decision last Friday, or at least Delta’s role in it, is because all things aren’t equal when it comes to our fair municipality. If you’re one of the cities in Greater Vancouver that will soon require a new place to dispose of your garbage because the landfill in Cache Creek is closing, then I can see the lure of an incinerator. If you can’t find another place to dump it, then why not burn the trash, generating energy, and revenue, in the process? (They could likely find another place to dump, including an expanded Cache Creek, but that’s another story.) An incinerator is prohibitively expensive, and has its own environmental shortcomings in the form of particulates in the air, but given the predicament many Lower Mainland communities are facing, a waste-to-energy facility is not an unreasonable choice. Delta, however, isn’t in that boat. We don’t truck our garbage to Cache Creek, but rather to the Vancouver Landfill in East Ladner, which has a lifespan of at least another 25 years. That means opting for incineration is kissing off another quarter century of free dumping as well as the royalties that come with playing host to the landfill. Vancouver certainly sees the financial benefits of sticking with the landfill, which is a big reason why it voted against Metro’s burning proposal last week. Other jurisdictions also came out against the plan for a variety of reasons, including a lack of other options and the potential location of the incinerator, but Delta joined the majority in supporting the move to waste-to-energy. Perhaps I’m a dinosaur and shouldn’t be so concerned with the bottom line, but I’m having a hard time getting past the financial impacts of the decision as well as the relatively recent conversion to incineration. Oddly enough, Metro Vancouver’s preference not too long ago was to continue landfilling, either in Cache Creek or Ashcroft, and it was only when those options disappeared the waste-to-energy bandwagon began to fill. What’s more, if incineration is as environmentally friendly as its supporters claim, then why has the Fraser Valley Regional District condemned Metro’s decision amid fears of deteriorating air quality? Neither option to deal with our garbage is ideal, but in one case it’s not only the trash that’s getting burned.

COMMUNITY COMMENT There are those who believe global warming (or climate change) is a fallacy. They dispute the information coming at us and offer other information. As a professional engineer of many years, I have concluded that some form of global warming is taking place. It may be cyclical, but if so, the cycle is many hundred years long and warmer weather is in the cards in my lifetime and in yours. Remember that 10,000 years ago our part of the world was covered by a glacier. Thousands upon thousands of years earlier we were a tropical jungle. So it may be a cycle — but a very long cycle. A few years ago I visited the old Dutch port area in Jakarta,

Indonesia, and viewed what appeared to be high curbs on the edges of the dock. It was explained this was to keep water out as the sea level had risen a lot in the past many years. The dock was now below sea level. Within recent years the polar ice cap has shrunk dramatically, the ice cap over Greenland is melting at a very significant rate, glaciers in Canada are shrinking and disappearing, the sea is warming providing concern about changes in ocean currents, temperatures in many places are rising and there is evidence that storms are more violent. So what does this have to do with you and me as we live and enjoy our summer in Delta? Many years ago as the Fraser Valley and Delta were settled, our ancestors diked the Fraser River to “keep it under control.” Doing so reduced the area for floodwaters to spread, thus causing them to rise higher than before when flooding. With global warming and heavier rains, more runoff is likely on the Fraser and flooding can become a bigger problem. Absent rigorous channel cleaning, and with the

effect of urban mass weight on our peat sub soils, the flooding is predicted to be a looming problem. So if you combine sea level rise, increased river flow and more violent winter storms, you are looking at storm surges that are several feet above today’s reality. What are we doing? We are depending on the province to tell us what to do. In some cases, such as Beach Grove and Boundary Bay, the current diking standards will not save us. Yet Delta is reluctant to impose new standards on oceanfront homeowners as dikes in some cases are on private property and this effort would be opposed. Homeowners are reluctant to lose the view they currently enjoy. Some don’t believe the dike needs to be higher, despite recent experiences. Each is capable of suing the other for loss of... But what if you live two blocks away and get flooded due to insufficient dikes? It will probably take a major storm surge, with damage in the millions of dollars, to wake us up. Why are we waiting for this to happen?

Justice served in case featuring important messages for society lives — is a privilege, not a right. We, therefore, need to do this mindfully and with consideration for others, just as we would expect others to behave when we might be at risk of harm. Almost twice the speed limit is just not on. Secondly, we all know that too much alcohol makes idiots of us all, and sometimes also releases pent-up resentments, frustrations, rages and irresponsible behaviour. This can cause a dangerous behavioural cocktail (excuse

the pun). We don’t need a nation of prudes, but we do need to restrict our drinking to safe social environments. Thirdly, to put both together — that is, driving while drunk — is simply unacceptable behaviour; behaviour that needs to be pilloried publicly and prosecuted promptly. Both have happened in the Alexa Middelaer case, fortunately, and the outcome is the appropriate one. I don’t like the idea of new laws because I feel we are already over-regulated,

but I guess the anti-social behaviour of some like Berner — and its devastatingly fatal results — makes the new .05 laws necessary. Hopefully, the sentence to be delivered in November will “educate” (read: punish) Berner appropriately, protect the public from her repeating this sort of behaviour (at least for a few years) and help deter others from similar behaviour. Justice served, but a beautiful and precious life lost in the process. Chris Stanton

There were many evacuees from several buildings requiring registration and much paperwork. Within minutes we were provided seating, hot/cold drinks and

Next time you travel on B.C. Highway No. 3 across the southern portion of our beautiful province, consider taking a side trip to Sparwood and drive a short jaunt up to Elkford. There is a real connection, of much significance, to our municipality. Elkford is where the coal shipped from Westshore Terminals at Tsawwassen originates and the number of trains that cross our district every day hints at the value of that traffic. Nestled against the

mountain range that keeps Alberta where it belongs, the village is the headquarters for all the activity that produces one of the Pattison Group’s most profitable ventures. Daughter Susan and I stayed overnight at Fernie and decided to find breakfast where the coal starts the journey to our port. We found a café with a knowledgeable waitress, had a good breakfast and learned a lot more about the village. One feature worth remembering is the method of extracting the coal eliminates the dreadful toll of lives that we hear so much about in foreign mines. Elkford is in the Elk Valley and it was a construction site. At one stop we found ourselves in a

herd of 17 creatures, one bull with half a dozen adult females and 10 young ones casually searching in the rubble of the former construction site. They ignored us, continued their searching, so we reciprocated and drove on. Waterton Lakes National Park is a natural one to visit when your route brings you near that jewel of our national parks system. It is one we visited frequently when our family lived at Barons and Susan wanted to be able to say she visited it this time. An afternoon visit is too short, but that was all we could afford. It was great news to learn a big chunk of the Flathead Valley is to be added to Waterton Lakes.

Huw and Carolyn Thomas are taking a year to cycle around North America, Australia and Europe to raise money for ShelterBox. They start their trip tomorrow in Vancouver.

Huw and Carolyn Thomas were in South Delta Thursday to share their story with the Tsawwassen Rotary Club. The couple plans to spend a year cycling 16,000 kilometres (10,000 miles) on a tandem bike to fundraise for ShelterBox, a disaster relief charity. They’re looking to stop along the way and give talks to Rotary clubs, schools, scout groups and community organizations, “hopefully inspiring them with what we’ve done and encouraging them to do something for the charity,” said Huw. They leave tomorrow from the Vancouver Art Gallery and plan to spend just under a month cycling around B.C. before heading into Alberta, south into the U.S. and then on to New Zealand, Australia and Europe. They’re using one of the disaster relief organization’s boxes, normally filled with a tent and other emergency items, to carry their supplies on the trip. The pair from Cornwall, who both used to work for local newspapers back in

England, has previous experience with ShelterBox. Huw did public relations work for the charity while Carolyn was a member of a ShelterBox response team that was deployed to Pakistan. For the last couple of years they’ve been teaching English in Portugal. This won’t be their first big trip on a tandem bicycle. In 2004/05 they cycled about 9,600 kilometres (6,000 miles) around the coasts of France, Spain and Portugal. Huw said they made a 06128161

On Thursday, Dairy Queens across the province, including the one in Tsawwassen, will donate proceeds from the sale of every Blizzard to help sick children in B.C. Aug. 12 marks the eighth annual DQ Miracle Treat Day for the Children’s Miracle Network in support of B.C. Children’s Hospital. Last year, participating Dairy Queens raised more than $372,675 for B.C. Children’s Hospital. Building trust South Delta’s future will include “community shaking” changes. “Nothing endures but change,” Heraclitus said. We have a particular way of talking about change. Letters to the editor favour those who write well. Public meetings favour folks verbally articulate. Online surveys require computer literacy. Most processes on a political level have embedded safeguards that prevent people speaking face-to-face. Dialogue becomes monologue and the loudest voices carry the day. “WWJD” printed on a bracelet invited people to ask the question: “What would Jesus do?” What would Jesus do to help South Delta negotiate all this change? He would invite us to a party, picnic or potluck supper. He was known

to eat with people and for really listening. Not the kind of listening that is so common today — the patronizing, “I’m listening but really I’m formulating my rebuttal or put down.” The children, the vulnerable, the youth, the aged and the marginalized would be welcome. Other races and faiths would find a place. The silenced would be heard. Maybe we’d play, sing, blow bubbles or fly kites. Jesus was a trust builder. God taught him well. If, as the Bible suggests, heaven resembles a magnificent banquet Jesus learned early that when people take time to eat together trust grows and fear dissipates. So, I say less speeches, surveys, articles and studies in favour of more picnics. Wiener Walk at Winskill Annual Dachshund celebration is now in its 18th year BY

sawwassen’s Winskill Park will once again be home to the Western Dachshund Club’s annual Wiener Walk and Picnic. Set for tomorrow, the event, which features games, a costume parade and more, will mark its 18th year celebrating the diminutive breed. Organizers are sticking with what’s worked in the past, notes Susan Lankau, a Tsawwassen resident who’s also the Western Dachshund Club’s secretary. “I think we have a good rapport with the people who come, which is the main thing. It’s not meant to be a show,” she says. Lankau, who has three Dachshunds, says she sees some of the same people year after year and they like to have a visit with her pets. “People come to see my dogs. Tammy is now 17-and-a-halfyears-old. They come and want to see her.” There were about 200 Dachshunds at last year’s event, which was actually a bit of a drop from previous years. Lankau attributed the dip to poor weather earlier in the day. “We’ve had at times up to 300, which is a lot. Some people like me have more than one dog.” But there are others “who come with one dog and there’s four or

five people with them,” Lankau explains. It’s hard to say how many will turn up tomorrow, she says. The Wiener Walk has always been held at Winskill except for the first few editions that took place in Surrey. Having shade and the enclosed space make the park an ideal location, Lankau says. “Walking around the park is something we do three times during the event. It’s very nice and people feel comfortable there. I think it’s the best place.” The event starts with a walk around the park for all the dogs in attendance; a costume parade and contest caps off the afternoon. Games and contests, like best trick, longest dog and oldest dog, are also put on. Dachshunds, known for their short legs and long bodies, originated in Germany and have three coat varieties: smooth hair, wire hair and long hair. The dogs were developed to chase burrow-dwelling animals. The breed’s name is German and translates to badger dog. A Dachshund owner since 1964, Lankau says the breed is very independent. Participants from across the Lower Mainland, other areas of B.C., Alberta, Washington and as far away as Nova Scotia have come to the event in the past. The Wiener Walk and Picnic goes from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at

and a 50/50 draw. Dogs must be on a lead at all times and have their current vaccinations. Puppies must be at least three-months-old to take part. Other breeds of dogs are not

encouraged to attend. Hotdogs, pop and snacks will be on sale. Part proceeds go to dog-related charities like CKC Health Foundation and Dachshund Rescue.

The afterglow of a mountain meadow yoga class — with 360-degree views and helicopter access only — has coloured my ambivalence to heli-yoga. It is a frivolous but delicious journey to one’s inner self. Let’s call it yoga candy. Martha McCallum, of Martha’s HeliHikes, brings the day trip with Icefield Helicopter Tours to new elevations. Certified by the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides, McCallum is a wildlife biologist, master herbalist and Hatha yoga teacher. huddled together for protection against the wind and noise of the rotors. Then Menzel lifts the aircraft away, leaving us in sudden stillness and silence. The transition from flight to yoga is a stretch in itself, but McCallum knows how

to ground us. First, she lets the remoteness of this expanse of icy peaks, green slopes and shimmering glacial lakes work its magic. As if we are sitting in the bubble of a snow globe, we look down and around and can see forever. Soon McCallum has us baring our soles and “massaging the earth” with our feet in walking meditation. I’m not sure if it’s the altitude affecting my thoughts or heightened awareness, but an unfurling of yoga mats beautifully colour co-ordinates with the deep greens of the bearberry leaves, purple of the saxifrage flowers, and lime green and orange of lichen. Yoga movements allow for playful contact with this heavenly place. In face down poses, we inhale earthy scents and gaze with a macro lens view of minuscule wildflowers. In twists, when our bodies can turn no more, our eyeballs work to drink in just a little more of the panoramic view. Looking through our legs in “downward dog” creates a refreshingly childish upsidedown perspective on the skyline. The final resting pose hushes our own sounds, welcoming birdsong and the thunder of silence. local kids featured in this movie are excited to show it in their own town. The movie was the winner of the BIA’s Pick the Flick contest held in May. Winner Emily Hardy from Ladner will have VIP seats for her and 15 friends and family as well as a round of popcorn. “We want the community to come early to the park to enjoy the full experience,” said BIA executive director Ana Arciniega. “Even if kids are too young for a movie, bring them to the park for the pre-movie festival. There is lots for them to do.” The fun begins at 6 p.m. with entertainment from local band Doghouse, many crafts and games, demonstrations by Delta Gymnastics and United Martial Arts, a sports zone, vendors and, of course, food and popcorn. Thanks to overwhelming support from the community in past years, Ron Deeks and Kristina Linder, together with friends, will again open their gardens for viewing. They would like to invite everyone to join them in support of the Delta Hospice Society. “There are five very different gardens in Ladner and Tsawwassen on the tour this year,” says Linder. “Our goal is to inspire and encourage all gardeners, and we want to show that gardening is for everyone, and that a garden can be anything the gardener wants it to be. We would like for everyone to take home great ideas they can use in their own gardens.” Linder says they want to help the society raise the last $900,000 of the capital campaign to fund the build-

Deadheading tips anne marrison

n the early years of gardening, many of us treat deadheading as a casual stroll where we can hold a cup of coffee (or glass of wine) in one hand and pick off spent flowers with the other. But later, deadheading can become so much more. For container gardeners in summer, deadheading is also a chance to check for pests that can quickly become epidemic in hot, dry conditions. Taking a few seconds to check underneath three or four dubious-looking leaves can reveal spider mites or whitefly before their numbers become overwhelming. All annuals bloom longer if deadheaded regularly and if annuals grown for foliage happen to flower, it’s usually best to deadhead them early. Many foliage plants (coleus is one) have

insignificant flowers and if they’re allowed to make seed the foliage often deteriorates. Some perennials will rebloom if cut back immediately after the first flush of bloom. This includes many hardy geraniums, lupins, snapdragons, Verbena bonariensis, yarrow and alchemilla (Ladies Mantle). Once summer is well under way, gardeners may consider neglecting some of the deadheading to provide seedheads for dried arrangements in winter. The hardy annual Love-in-aMist (Nigella) with its seedheads of red-striped green globes is beautiful in vases. Its seed is easy to save and scatter in fall for next year’s display. But seed-heads that look so good in garden beds or winter arrangements can be a real trap for gardeners who already have quite enough dandelions or buttercups to weed-out and don’t need thousands of volunteer hellebores/teasels/ camas/ornamental grasses as well. The key is to watch

the seedheads and cut the unwanted ones out before they get close to shedding seed. Gardeners who want short-lived perennials to persist in their garden should always allow a little self-seeding. Columbines and foxgloves fall into this group. But foxgloves need to be cut back before they turn into an ugly long pole crowned by a little tuft of flowers. Cutting almost the whole stalk, but leaving a few inches of seed capsules at the base of the flower spike ensures a manageable amount of seed to scatter where you want more foxgloves. Some rampant self-seeders need finesse and extra time if seeding is to be stopped while allowing the flower display is to continue. For instance, astrantia blooms in clusters where individual florets open over a very long time. This means older florets should be snipped out frequently. Islanders earn bronze medal at provincials

Delta Islanders capped an outstanding season with a third place finish at the Provincial Intermediate “B” Lacrosse Championships in Richmond. The Islanders earned their spot on the podium with a 7-3 victory on Monday over the Coquitlam Adanacs. Delta opened the tournament with a tough 6-5 loss to the New West Salmonbellies, then rebounded with a one goal win of its own — a 5-4 decision over the Adanacs. The Sam Thauli-coached team was in a must-win situation on Sunday against Juan de Fuca if they wanted to keep their gold medal hopes alive. The Vancouver Island squad prevailed 5-1 and would go on to win the championship. The Islanders walked away with additional hardware as Nathan Gee was named to the all-star team, while Jordan Thauli was selected as the tournament’s most sportsmanlike player. Mike Avery and Tyler Wickett were also named to the league all-star team.

Delta athletes shine on national stage at SO Summer Games MARK BOOTH

Delta athletes made their debut in a big way at the recent Special Olympics Canada Summer Games in London, ON. A 12th month journey ended in a flourish as the local contingent brought home 27 medals. These athletes earned their trip back east by being named to Team B.C. at the conclusion of the provincial championships last summer. That was followed by plenty of hard work to be prepared for the national stage. This was the 12th edition of the SO Canada Summer Games, yet the first for the seven-year-old Delta chapter. The national event rotates with the SO World Games which will take place in Athens next year. Delta athletes showed they would be worthy candidates to be on the Canadian team. “Our athletes were very excited to have this opportunity,” said Delta SO coordinator Susan Wieczorek. “Once they found out they were going, it took a significant commttment, including a journal they had to complete on a weekly basis and training with coaches outside of our area. All their hard work really paid

off.” The Delta athletes not only faced tough competition, but also had to deal with very hot and humid weather that resulted in a

number of events being moved to the evening. Here’s a rundown of the individual results:

Athletics capture Provincial Mosquito AA title Tsawwassen baseball team caps terrific season with lopsided win over Lake Cowichan in the championship game The Tsawwassen Athletics capped off a dominating all-star season of baseball by capturing last weekend’s Provincial “AA” Mosquito Championship in Chemainus. The A’s took plenty of momentum to Vancouver Island after opening the season with a tournament win in Mission, then coming in top spot of their league. They opened the provincials with wins over Stewart Channel (8-7) and Port Alberni (11-3). Next, was a tight one run win (3-2) over Aldergrove before Tsawwassen came out on the short end of a 13-10 slugfest against Surrey. The locals moved onto Sunday’s playoff round where they outlasted Vancouver (8-7) to put them in the final against Lake Cowichan. They proved to be too much for their Island opponent, clinching the championship with a 12-0 victory. The run to the title included exciting hot box runs, phenomenal

catches, aggresive slides into base and a home run by Ryan Scarr in the final. The boys exhibited excellent team spirit and camaraderie throughout their exceptional ball season. The team also includes: Teo Ardanaz, Taylor Bourdon, Keon Campbell, Noah Cender, Aiden Hansen-Bukata, Iver Jackson, Isaac Laurent, Nicholas Laviolette, Travis Pink, Christopher Pope, Joshua Vaughan and Morgan Wolsey. Game MVP awards went to Hansen-Bukata, Laurent, Cender, Scarr, Pink and Arandaz. The dedicated coaching staff features: Dave Campbell, Dave Cender, Neil Pope and Kurt Laurent. The team would like to thank their sponsor Thrifty Foods. Their support is appreciated and it was a real treat for the boys to ride in the store’s very large shopping cart during Monday’s Sun Festival Parade in Tsawwassen.

Cuba finally solves Robson to keep Canada off podium at Junior Worlds Cuba finally solved Ladner’s Tom Robson to deny Canada a spot on the podium at the World Junior Baseball Championships. For the second time in the tournament, the 17-year-old right-

hander faced Cuba in Sunday’s bronze medal game. In the first meeting a week earlier, Robson was superb, pitching six scoreless innings before eventually departing a game Canada would lose 3-0.

He continued to shine in the rematch, this time allowing just two hits and striking out three as the game was scoreless through four innings. However, Cuba’s bats awoke in the fifth, as Andy Ibanez

rocked Robson with a three-run homer to break the game open. The visitors added another run in the seventh, ending Robson’s afternoon. He allowed four runs and seven hits in six and one-third

innings as Canada would go on to lose 8-2. Robson will have little time for rest. He will be pitching for Team B.C. at the upcoming Canada Cup in Saskatchewan, Aug. 11-15.

Representing LMFA are Mackenzie Bethueser (Squirt B), Sammi Harris (Mentoring program), Jessica Lauckner (Mite Excel), Chelsea Kaake (Delta Special Olympics) and Clint Taylor (Boys Zone 4 Peewee team). The ’91 Invaders were also represented by Katie Harris, Andrea Husband, Courtney Baerg, Samantha Mah and Danica Jayme.

Delta Deas rowers win Games gold

Months of intense training paid off for Delta Deas Rowing Club junior members Kendra Pedersen and Alyssa Hermann as they struck gold in the doubles skill competition at the B.C. Summer Games in Langley. The pair drew gasps from the crowd by performing their ‘glide’ skill for 30 seconds, adding loads of bonus points to their score by rotating their oars between vertical and horizontal positions over 20 times as they glided. Other skills included a figure eight, emergency stops, a wide sweep turn and “docking” to a buoy. Pedersen and Hermann won gold with

the highest overall score by a considerable margin, with great thanks to their dedicated coach, Teri Gambrel. Other Delta Deas Rowing Club juniors reached the podium over the weekend as well. Jake Elward and Mackenzie Baxfield won bronze in the mixed quad 1000 metre time trials, and two silvers — one in the 500m sprint event, and one in ‘rowdeo’ skills. Elward also went on to win a gold medal in the the men’s double skills. THe DDRC Junior Program still has space left in its learn-to-row summer program. According to the Motor Vehicle Act “a person riding an animal or driving an animal on a highway has the same rights and is subject to the duties of the driver of a vehicle” (Part 3, Sec. 120 p(1)(c) When passing a horse and rider on the road, drivers should slow down and pass wide. Use even more caution than if you were passing a cyclist or pedestrian. Horses are unpredictable and must be given additional distance. You deﬁnitely do not want to hit a horse! Please do not honk your horn or rev your engine near a horse and rider, and if you’ve got a loud boom box, turn it down. Never stop or accelerate suddenly which could startle the horse. Remember that horses are animals and not machines and can react unexpectedly. Be patient, most riders will pull into the nearest driveway to let you past. You should be extra cautious if you see someone leading a horse or riders in a group. Cyclists and pedestrians should call out when approaching horseback riders. They may not be able to hear you coming over the sound of their horses’ hooves. Bicycles can be especially frightening for horses. Please pass single ﬁle and to the outside and never go between two horses! If you have a stroller please stop and let the horse pass you. Do not approach a horse with a stroller. Some riders maybe happy to stop and let your pat their horse but you should be very careful. Do not raise your hand to the horse's face – rather pat it gently on the neck. Watch out for their hooves and please don’t feed the horse anything unless given permission by the rider.

After a brief illness, Cliff passed away peacefully. He is survived by his wife Doreen, children Guy (Shirley), Brent (Tannes), Shelley Smirfitt (Mark), Leona Waroway (Don), Lanice Thorsteinson, and Karen Coates (Barry), 13 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and sisters Doris Kublank (Ed) and Fern Frombach. Born on the farm in Balgonie, Sask, Cliff developed a passion for both music and woodworking. Cliff continued his music career in the army and into his retirement years. His saxophone and clarinet raised the floorboards in many dance halls in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Cliff worked for Public Works/ BCIT as a journeyman carpenter for 20 years. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Delta Memorial Hospital for their loving care. A Celebration of Life will be held on Wednesday, August 11 at 1:00 pm at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Ladner. In loving memory of Kaven Evans

Kaven Evans passed away on July 28, 2010 due to a pulmonary embolism at Surrey Memorial Hospital, he was 64. Kaven is survived by his loving wife Gay, his 3 sons; Lee, Adam and Ashley and his extended family Guy, Lisa and Jacob. Kaven was born on April 21st, 1946 in Rotherham, England to William and Beatrice Evans. In 1967 Kaven immigrated to Canada with his closest friends. Shortly after his arrival he met his wife Gay and they married in 1971. Gay and Kaven joined the community of Tsawwassen shortly after their marriage and have remained a part of it for over 30 years. A closed family gathering was held on Monday, August 2nd, for Kaven and was attended by his family and closest friends. The Evans family would ask that anyone wishing to make contributions or donations in memory of Kaven Evans make them to the Tsawwassen Falcons Field Hockey club or a youth sports organization in their communities.

With cherished memories of a life well lived, we announce the passing of a dear husband to Merle, devoted father of Brent (Kathleen), Blaine (Mary) and Marylea (Ron). Grandpa will be lovingly remembered by his treasured grandchildren, Kaitlin, Maude, Eric, Braden, John, Cailea and Daniel. Also remembered by Kaitlin and Maude’s mother Karen Morgan. He will be sadly missed by his sisters Kathleen, Dorothy, Ileen and Gladys, and his brother Norman (Ev). Jack was predeceased by his parents Albert and Maud and his older brother Gordon. Jack was born on October 14, 1924 on the home farm at Woodnorth, Manitoba. He attended school in Woodnorth and Virden. Jack joined the South Saskatchewan Regiment and served his country proudly during WWII. In later years, Jack was deeply honoured to have had the opportunity to return to Holland to attend reunions celebrating the Dutch Liberation. After the war, Jack attended Khaki College in England, and the University of Manitoba, obtaining a BSC in Agriculture. Jack joined Green Cross Products in 1950 and retired from the parent company, Ciba Geigy Agriculture Division in 1988. On his retirement, he and Merle moved to Tsawwassen, BC. Jack was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Virden, the United Church,Tsawwassen Legion, and the Lawn Bowling, Senior Golf and Senior Curling Clubs. The family would like to acknowledge Jack’s coffee club group and friends for all their supportive phone calls and visits over the past few months. A celebration of Jack’s life will be held at Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Delta, BC on Sunday, August 8th at 2 pm. A family gathering will be held in the Virden Legion Hall, Virden, Manitoba on Saturday, August 28, 2010 at 2:00 pm. The family would like to extend their appreciation to St. Paul’s Cardiac Unit, Surrey Memorial Surgical Unit, Reverend Wendy Biley, Dr. Hollinger and all the staff and volunteers at Irene Thomas Hospice for their compassionate and exceptional care. In lieu of ﬂowers, Jack and his family request donations be made to the Irene Thomas Hospice, 4635 Clarence Taylor Crescent, Delta, BC, V4K 4L8, for the purchase of a reclining wheelchair.
