The recommendation on the Southlands for the new Tsawwassen Area Plan is for no change to the agricultural designation of the land. It was revealed at the area plan committee’s meeting Thursday at municipal hall that their draft plan will state the controversial Southlands property should remain as agricultural land. The recommendation from staff, which will still be discussed by the committee at another meeting in a couple of weeks, comes on the heels of an Ipsos Reid mail-out survey for the municipality. It found a majority of respon-

dents were not in favour of allowing housing on the Southlands in exchange for the remainder of the site being converted to urban agriculture. “I’d like to work with the owner of the property and see how it can be producing food...I believe the zoning, A1, is where I want it and that is what the community has told us, so I believe this is the right thing,” said Coun. Heather King. Committee member Dorothy MacDonald said the survey made it clear a majority of residents don’t want a trade-off. The Century Group wants to develop the Southlands with 1,900 homes in higher density housing on a third of the site

using concepts of new urbanism. Once completed, it would add 4,000 to 5,000 new residents in Tsawwassen. Several strategies are identified, including designing a housing pattern, which “maximizes the use of the land that contains lower quality soils and less wildlife value.” The proposal also includes 42 per cent (about 200 acres) of the Southlands that has better soil dedicated to agriculture. The agricultural land would be handed over to Delta in a transfer from private to public ownership. The plan also includes a post-secondary institute focused on sustainable agriculture, in partnership Kwantlen Polytechnic University. Earlier this year, the TAP

committee released an “Ideas” document. Although not specifically mentioning the Southlands, the document notes: “innovative policies supportive of urban agricultural activities could be supported.” However, planner Barry Konkin said Thursday that statement is no longer present in the current draft plan, although some of the committee members wondered why they never got to discuss the exclusion or the Southlands issue more fully. A familiar face has become the sixth name to enter the Delta byelection. Former chamber of commerce president Maria DeVries, a 36year resident of Delta, announced Thursday that she’s seeking the council seat left vacant by the death of George Hawksworth this spring. In a news release, she cited a need for increased fiscal responsibility and concern over balancing community interests as her reasons for running. “If elected, I will insist on sound financial decision making, while fighting to preserve Delta’s unique character. Delta families are cutting back on their spending, local government should follow suit. Governments can no longer tax and spend without accountability. It has to stop and it can end on September 18.” DeVries, who has run for council in the past, made news during

After the ruling Tuesday morning, Alexa’s parents, Laurel and Michael Middelaer, spoke to reporters about the message sent by the judge’s ruling and the new provincial laws. “I do think there is a little bit of a change and a shift in the lay of the land in this province and that’s a very good thing and I think coupled with the new administrative sanctions for impaired driving I think the people in this province will realize we have very little tolerance anymore for people who practice this reckless behaviour,” Laurel

Middelaer said. “It’s a choice, and that choice Ms. Berner made that day resulted in dire consequences. We lost our beautiful, precious daughter. Auntie Daphne was harmed beyond permanent healing and the ripple effect to all of our friends and family will be never ending.” Since their daughter’s death more than two years ago, the couple has become tireless advocates against impaired driving. “I think our children are our future and as British Columbians we need to demand safety to all of

our community and I think for so long we’ve been lax in our understanding of impaired driving,” Laurel said this week. “The bottom line is, we should not be drinking and then driving a motor vehicle, which is a very harmful device. “Drinking is one thing, and that’s fine... just don’t drive. Just don’t drive a vehicle afterwards because your judgment is altered. Who’s to say how much it’s altered. It doesn’t really matter. The fact is, you’re not spot on and you shouldn’t be driving.” In 2009, the Middelaers teamed up with the BCAA Traffic Safety Foundation and established Alexa’s Team, which honours police officers for their diligence in removing impaired drivers from the roads. Since then, 200 officers from the Lower Mainland and across B.C. have joined Alexa’s Team. The foundation also started the Alexa Middelaer Memorial Fund. All contributions are used to remind ordinary British Columbians that impaired driving isn’t worth the risk. And this year, the family started a campaign to raise money to give police officers he tools to take and keep impaired drivers off B.C. roads. The plan is to establish a mobile unit, Alexa’s Bus, which would be dedicated to gathering evidence at crash sites where alcohol is believed to have been a factor. Last year, Century Group president Sean Hodgins submitted an application for a community plan amendment for the Southlands, which is zoned agricultural but is no longer part of the Agricultural Land Reserve. British Columbia’s new, tougher laws against drinking and driving are set to go into effect later this summer. Solicitor general Mike de Jong announced this week that come Sept. 20 police across the province will be out in force armed with the toughest laws and penalties in the country to get impaired drivers off the road. “Unfortunately, impaired driving is on the increase in this province and that’s alarming because it means some people still aren’t getting the message,” de Jong said. “The new penalties will be a wake-up call because when September comes, drinking drivers can lose their driver’s licence, have their vehicle impounded, and pay costs that range from $600 to $3,750.” Under the new regulations, drivers who have a blood alcohol level of more than 0.08 per cent, or those who refuse to provide a roadside breath sample, will face an immediate 90day driving ban and a $500 fine. As well, the offender’s vehicle will be impounded for 30 days and they could face criminal charges. Drivers caught in the “warn” range – a blood alcohol level between 0.05 and 0.08 per cent – will face an immediate three-day driving ban and a $200 fine for the first offence. Getting caught a second time in the “warn” range will garner a seven-day ban and a $300

A fundraiser is in the works to help the family of a long-time Ladner resident who died unexpectedly earlier this month. Mary Brodowich (born Kavanagh) was just 38years-old when she died suddenly in the early morning hours of July 13. It was her daughter’s fourth birthday. She left behind husband Rob Brodowich, also a long-time Ladner resident, and their two children Brandon, 11, and Kiya, 4, as well as a legion of family and friends. That group is coming together to plan a fundraiser to help Brodowich’s family through this difficult time. The event is planned for Aug. 6 at the Sundance Pub at 6 p.m. and will include 50/50 draws and raffles. Tickets cost $15, which includes a beer and a burger. Brodowich’s friends and loved ones are hoping the community will step up and

It’s important for all homeowners to get a smoke alarm. That was the message conveyed at Delta council last month as civic politicians discussed a report on the new B.C. Fire Code regulations that went into effect this spring. The change to the code requires every residential building built before March

31, 1979 to have smoke alarms installed. The new law applies to every private home, suites within apartment buildings and sleeping rooms such as those found in hotels or motels. The report by Delta fire chief Dan Copeland notes the new regulations will help save lives, prevent injury and minimize property damage caused by fires in Delta’s older buildings. Coun. Bruce McDonald provided a personal account

of how a smoke alarm saved his home several years ago. After a lamp had fallen on a mattress, causing it to smolder and then burn, a smoke alarm alerted his family, said McDonald. “Certainly without the smoke alarm our home would have been gone,” he said. McDonald then described a similar occurrence with one of his neighbours that also had a smoke alarm

installed. The neighbour’s home was gutted, but the family managed to escape thanks to the alarm, he said. The Delta fire department will run an education program while fire prevention officers will work with the owners of older buildings in implementing the new requirement. McDonald wondered if homes without smoke alarms would be entitled to fire insurance coverage.

A form of waste-to-energy has been proposed by a company hoping to build an anaerobic digestor on Annacis Island. Earth Renu Corp. recently gave a presentation to civic politicians at a workshop outlining the company’s proposal to build a facility where food and other organic waste would be converted to biogas. The process of anaerobic diges-

tion breaks down organic waste, such as manure, in the absence of oxygen, to produce a methane-rich biogas, as well as liquid and solid materials known as digestate. Biogas may be used in place of traditional fossil fuel and could be sold to a utility such as Terasen Gas. The residual liquid waste digestate may be used on farms as liquid fertilizer, while the residual solid digestate may be used as animal bedding or in other

applications. A report to council noted that while the technology, a form of waste-to-energy, is not new, it’s been used mostly on a small scale for agricultural waste management. The technology has been used on a larger scale in Europe and more recently in Ontario, where 15 biogas plants are under construction. Recently, B.C.’s first large-scale biogas facility was approved for a farm property in Abbotsford.

The Earth Renu proposal for Annacis Island would involve the processing of approximately 50,000 to 75,000 tonnes of waste annually. The waste would come from such sources as restaurant food waste, fruit peels from a Richmond processing facility and cow manure. No outdoor storage or processing is proposed. The proposal requires municipal rezoning approval, as well as approvals from the province and Metro Vancouver.

Delta police are looking for two young suspects after a suspicious incident at Memorial Park this week. A teen girl was in the park with a young child she was looking after on Wednesday afternoon when she saw two teen males

in the area. The two suspects were within hearing distance when she heard them talking about smoking marijuana. Police said it is believed that one of the boys took a gun out of the waistband of his pants and pointed it at the girl before leaving the area. The suspect who had

the gun is described as a Caucasian male, 15-16 years old 5’10” tall with a medium build, dark hair and eyes. He was wearing a baseball hat and possibly a sweater and dark jeans. The second suspect is also described as a Caucasian male, 15-16 years old, 5’10” to six feet tall with a medium build and dark hair.

Ladner resident Robyn Thomson is counting down the days until she boards a plane bound for Africa – she’s got less than two weeks to go. Thomson has spent the past several months training and planning for a monumental event – she, along with friend Alison Hogg, who also grew up in Ladner, will climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Thomson leaves on Aug. 12 and will arrive in Tanzania two days later; a full week before the climb is set to being. The pair is climbing for a cause; Thomson had been raising money for Delta Hospice while Hogg is championing the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Thomson’s goal is $10,000 and she is over halfway there with about $5,700 in donations collected so far. She said she is grateful for all the donation’s she’s received so far and is hoping the community will come forward and help her raise the remaining funds to reach her goal. Thomson became involved with the hospice after seeing how helpful the services are to those in need. Three years ago, Thomson’s world was turned upside down when her close friend’s husband,

Kirk Holifield, was murdered. Holifield, 35, died after he was found shot several times in his truck on the side of Westminster Highway in Richmond in the early hours of Jan. 11, 2007. Thomson said that she, along with Kirk’s widow Elli and his parents Michele and Bert all sought help from Delta Hospice as they dealt with the senseless death of their son, husband and friend. “Without hospice I don’t think any of us would have gotten through it,” she said. Since then, Thomson has volunteered as a member of the hospice’s vigil team but she said she wanted to do more and set her sights on conquering Mount Kilimanjaro and raising $10,000. MURPHY’S LAW It’s a definite improvement, but I’m not so sure Delta’s new off-leash plan is going to do the entire trick. The municipality is poised, likely in September, to open 13 off-leash areas: four each in Ladner and Tsawwassen and five in North Delta. After kicking around the issue for years without any success, the concept of improving accessibility to off-leash parks, thus increasing the likelihood they will be frequented, makes abundant sense. A previous attempt that created just one off-leash area in each of the three communities flopped because the locations weren’t convenient, nor were they particularly inviting. Since that time there hasn’t been anywhere for dog owners to let their charges run free, at least not legally, so the plan to open 13 this fall has to be considered welcome news. At first blush that’s how I viewed it, but when I began assessing my own situation, I became less convinced. Of the four off-leash areas in Ladner, two, Wellington Point Park and Boundary Bay Airport, are well beyond the residential boundaries of town so would likely necessitate a car ride to get there. I don’t know about you, but my idea of a dog park is somewhere to walk, not drive, given the whole point of the undertaking is to provide the pooch with a little exercise. If I’m to pack up the dog in the car, it has to be a really great destination, like Richmond’s McDonald Beach, and I don’t think either of those two areas qualify. That leaves me a 20-minute to halfhour walk to the other two (Paterson Park and Ladner Harbour Park). That’s not too bad, but when it’s 30 minutes there and another 30 minutes back, in addition to time spent at the park, you’re talking about a significant chunk out of your day. Given the rationale idea behind multiple off-leash areas is to encourage their use by making them as convenient and accessible as possible, placing them at the west, east and north edges of the community is somewhat defeating that purpose. As for Tsawwassen, Beach Grove and Boundary Bay are well covered, but whether the remaining two dog parks are sufficient for the rest of town likely depends, as it does in Ladner, on where you live. I realize there are only so many places they can be located, and having some is certainly better than none, but the closer off-leash areas are to a dog owner’s home, the greater the chance they’ll be used. If they’re not nearby, expect to see dogs running free where they’re not permitted.

COMMUNITY COMMENT On Friday, Munich felt a bit like Vancouver can in the summertime. It was overcast, not warm by any means, and if you were to take a walk down the main street, you wouldn’t hear much English being spoken at all. Construction crews nearly outnumbered pedestrians, tourists were taking pictures of other tourists in front of notable structures and vendors hawked cheesy souvenirs made almost solely in China. Computer nerds and regular civilians alike swarmed the Mac store as soon as it opened, testing out the new iPads on display, and traffic stuck to the right side of the road – for the most part anyway. The main difference between the two cities, aside from their native languages, geography and the fact

that you don’t have to hip check your way through a Starbucks in Germany, is that Vancouver is still wrestling with its 2010 Olympic hangover while Munich is anxiously waiting to see if it can host the Games in 2018. Well, some are anxiously waiting at least. I went to a tourist information centre to see if anyone was wired into the candidate city buzz yet, because I figured that if anyone in the city cared about it, it would be people at the tourist information centre. As it turns out, that wasn’t really the case. I was shuffled back and forth between a few employees before the last one, a little apologetically, admitted she knew absolutely nothing about the bid but they did have, if I was interested, some collectors pins that were made when Munich became an “Applicant City.” Then, they hastily sent me on my way with a web address scribbled on scrap paper. What I found out, thanks to some free Wi-Fi, was that the city, located close to the Alps in the province of Bavaria, has a strong level of support for the bid and that their slogan is “Die Spiele im

They’re also promising to give housing back to the community once the athletes leave. New and improved transportation infrastructure? Yep, they’ve got that one covered too. If you can remember back to when Vancouver won the rights to host the Games, or when Vancouver was organizing the Games, or when Vancouver was hosting the Games, then you can also remember that these promises were just three that were hastily made and arguably met. Next summer the International Olympic Committee will choose either Munich, Germany, Annecy, France or Pyeongchang, South Korea to host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games. Whoever wins will have a lot to do, a lot of promises to make and will be left with an indelible legacy – whether its positive or negative, no matter their similarities or differences with Vancouver, is up to them.

Increasing the gas tax can add $100 million to $200 million, vehicle registration fees can add $150 millio, and transit infrastructure bonds can add $150 million. Even $50 million to $100 million can be redirected from B.C. Lottery Corporation profits. It’s possible to generate between $1 billion and $2 billion per year. A few favourite exercises Well on Your Way

s a trainer, it’s my job to know as many different exercises as my grey matter can store. I know thousands of different combinations to tone the thighs, slim the butt, cut the gut and build the pipes. However, sometimes the basics are all we really need

to get to where we want to go. These five exercises are a few of my favourites that each of my clients must master before we move into more advanced techniques. • Keep your hips square and quiet and your shoulders blades slightly drawn together. • Take it to the next level: Once you are able to hold a plank with perfect form for 30 seconds, try tapping out with one leg 15 times and then tapping out with the other. Super Heros This low back exercise is commonly called a “superman”, but I like to call it a more gender neutral name, so I have termed mine Super Heros. This exercise really is a Super Hero because we spend so much time in a flexed position (sitting, driving, desk work) and this exercise counter balances all that flexion by lengthening and extending the spine. • Keep your chin tucked in, so the back of your neck is longer than the front, and turn your thumbs up to add the lat muscles in the exercise too. • Lift as high as you can and pause at the top part of the exercise for a breath.

Munich’s Passion Play worth the wait BY

t’s a cast of thousands, literally. Two thousand, to be exact. They’ve been hard at work for more than a year, building and refining sets, prepping the theatre, fine-tuning their instruments, designing and sewing costumes, studying and rehearsing. None have been paid for their efforts, but that doesn’t seem to faze them one bit. Their reward? To play a part in the 2010 production of the Oberammergau Passion Play. To be given a lead role in the play is a huge honour. This season, one of those chosen to play Jesus (there are two) is Frederik Mayet, whose day job is to head up publicity for the Passion Play. Mary Magdalene is a flight attendant. And, in an unintentionally ironic twist, one of those tapped for the role of Judas, Carsten Luck, is the head carpenter. Even if they are not directly part of the production, the other half of the townspeople prepare for the

rush of tourists who flock to the tiny village 90 kilometres southwest of Munich by readying the restaurants, shops and businesses catering to crowds throughout the summer and into the fall. Every 10 years, virtually everyone in Oberammergau is involved in staging one of the biggest spectacles in religious theatre in the world. There is one exception: it’s possible the only person in town who doesn’t get involved is the barber male performers must grow out their beards and hair, since the production forbids the use of artificial hair. For five months, the amateur actors will take to the stage of a specially designed, purpose-built venue and perform their interpretation of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. The population of Oberammergau will double in size on performance days, and by the end of the run, half a million people will have witnessed the once-in-a-decade event. Passion Plays are performed around the

But none have the reputation nor the longevity of the Oberammergau productions, which have been performed faithfully for almost four centuries. The play’s beginnings in the town tucked into the foothills of the Bavarian Alps can be traced back to a time of turmoil, poverty, disease and death. The Passion Play runs approximately five hours and is divided into two acts to allow visitors to Oberammergau the oppor-

tunity to stretch their legs and to see a bit of the village. Performances begin in the afternoon, and the three-hour intermission allows time for a meal in one of the many restaurants in central Oberammergau and a stroll in the coolness of the early evening before the performance concludes. Oberammergau is a village also known for its woodcarvers; today there are more than 1,400 men and women registered in the profession who are happy to demonstrate their skills and chat with visitors. Golden Games for girls field hockey team Thirteen of 15 players on Zone 4 squad are from Delta as unbeaten run is capped by win over Fraser Valley in final The Delta-loaded Zone 4 girls field hockey team struck gold at last weekend’s B.C. Summer Games in Langley. With a roster that featured 13 local players, Zone 4 (Delta-RichmondBurnaby-New West) capped an unbeaten run with a nailbiting penaly stroke win over the host Fraser Valley in last Sunday’s gold medal game. The run to the top of the podium began with a comefrom-behind 2-1 victory over Vancouver Island. That was followed with an 8-0 win over the Kootenays. Saturday’s action features a pair of challenging matches as the girls battled Fraser Valley to a scoreless draw. The result wasn’t indicative of the play as both sides enjoyed plenty of scoring opportunities but couldn’t convert from the field or set plays. Zone 4 then put on a brilliant display of exciting hockey to defeat a talented Vancouver/Squamish team 3-1. The result left the squad

on top of the standings which meant a spot in the gold medal game and a rematch with Fraser Valley. Zone 4 scored first with a field goal from Vanessa Pearson after a scramble in front of the net. Her effort was quickly countered with the equalizer from the hosts. This proved to be a very exciting and once again action packed final game with some brilliant attacking play by the forwards, including Lindsay Cochlan, Lauren Boggs, Lauren Gau , Amber Sandhu and Cailean Meredith. Midfielders Cassidy Bremner, Emily Lieuwen, Lauren Dewar and Samantha Redmond demonstrated exceptional creative attacking play to support the forwards as well as very strong defensive play. The team received solid defending from Shelby Stead, Chase McDonald, Delaney Booker and Chantelle Schwartz while Krista Jensen provided awesome goaltending.

Tom Robson’s stock continues to soar as the top 2011 high school baseball prospect in the country — this time pitching for Canada at the World Junior Championships in Thunder Bay, Ontario. Ladner Red Bantam all-star baseball team rolled off five straight wins to capture the Valley of Champions Tournament in Kelowna. Ladner has qualified two teams for this weekend’s Bantam “A” Provincial Championships in Mission.

The Ladner Bantam Red Sox produced an unbeaten run under the Okanagan sun to capture their division at the annual Valley of the Champions baseball tournament in Kelowna — July 16-18. The team started out with victories over Ridge Meadows and then Abbotsford. Both offered different challenges with Ridge being a very good hitting team and Abbotsford having strong and deep pitching Day two provided a somewhat easier competition with games against the host Kelowna team and the Surrey Canadians. The Red Sox hit very well and the defence supported the pitching, culminating in a

perfect 4-0 round-robin record. The Red Sox earned a berth directly to the finals and once again faced Abbtosford. The game was even closer than the first meeting and it went down to the wire with Ladner pulling out the victory. Overall, Ladner played very well in all facets of the game — hitting, pitching and fielding. SAWATSKY Amy Margaret Amy, age 88, transitioned peacefully on the morning of July 19th, 2010. Amy was born in Sexsmith Alberta on January 2nd,1922. Amy was predeceased by her husband, Walter on August 17th 1989. Amy is survived by her two sons, Stan and Ken (Norah), grandchildren Stacy (Jim) and Julie (Clint) , great grandsons Travis, Bryce and Devon and her youngest sister Elizabeth. Amy had a generous heart and endless energy when it came to helping others. She will be remembered for her service and contribution to making the world a better place for all those around her. There will be a funeral service at the Ladner Baptist Church on Thursday. July 29th at 1:30pm. In honour of Amy, please donate to your favorite charity or give generously of your time to those in need.

My wonderful husband of 33 years died of heart failure after surgery. His family, sister, brother, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews will miss him very much. Ernie was born in Moncton and moved to Winnipeg with his family. His mother became very ill, she gave him the motor from their washing machine to play with and so began his fascination with engines. He joined the air force and so began his love of flying. He joined P.W.A. to work on helicopters which he learned to fly and eventually bought one. He toured Europe in his MG he bought in London and drove down as far as Morocco. His love of cars was a lifelong hobby. When he returned he bought an antique Jag (The Monster). He trucked his Heli to the Yukon and found jobs with various companies, eventually mapping territory for the government. His expertise in Heli engines was sought after in places like Honolulu, Hawaii. He worked with Conrad Busch building a beautiful hanger. Conrad’s wife Trudy said Ernie was a lovable guy. We got married, she and Conrad were right. He painted, wrote poetry, played the harmonica and took wonderful pictures. He built us a beautiful home in Tsawwassen where he worked and made terrific friends. I wish to thank his family, friends, doctors, nurses, caregivers for their compassion and kindness during this sad time. I thank you with all of my heart. We are going to take Ernie’s ashes up in a Heli and scatter them along the trail that he drove to Whitehorse and his dreams.

MAZEY Margaret Margaret passed away suddenly at Nanaimo General Hospital in the early morning of June 25th, 2010. She is predeceased by by her beloved husband Allan and granddaughter Olivia, and survived by her loving family; Sister Iris (Bill), children Susan, Peter (Judy), Sally (Dan), and grandchildren Tim, Simon (Shannon), Christopher, Danny, Jeremy, Ben, Timothy, and Chloe. Margaret was married to her wartime love Allan, for 28 years. After Allan’s death in 1972, she moved to Canada in 1976 with her family and settling in Tsawwassen where she worked for many years at the Kinsmen Retirement Home. Margaret was much loved by the residents and staff for her sense of humour, and her compassionate nature. Margaret was dearly loved by her children and grandchildren, and will be missed by many friends both in England and Canada. A Service of Remembrance, and Celebration of Margaret’s Life will be held at St. David’s Anglican Church, Tsawwassen on Saturday, August 7th at 1:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Margaret’s memory to World Vision Canada.

Gladys, our dear Mom, born February 19, 1923 in New Westminster, BC passed away July 19, 2010 in Tsawwassen, BC. She was predeceased by her husband Albert Angrignon (2004), mother Grace, father William and siblings Gordon, Evangeline, Fred, and Seldon. Gladys is survived by her children Edmond (Barb), Eugene (Gail), Randolph (Jen), John Scott, Joan and Gordon; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and extended family. She is also missed by her sister Mildred Walker and twin sister Irene Armstrong. Gladys attended Normal school in Vancouver and started teaching in Surrey in 1942. After her adventurous travels in the US and Bermuda with Irene and friends, Gladys married her first husband, John Bradshaw and lived in the US. Upon her return to BC, Gladys started teaching school at Aldergrove Elementary. There she met her second husband, Al Angrignon. The two teachers blended their families in 1955 and lived in Aldergrove for many years before moving to Langley in 1968. They had wonderful friends in both communities that they enjoyed sharing their lives with. Mom was actively involved in community activities including the Langley Lady Lions; Aldergrove and Sharon United Churches and school activities. She loved to travel, golf, play cards, garden, bake - the family has been missing her pies the last few years. The family would like to thank Mom’s many loyal friends, and the staff at both Langley Gardens and The Waterford in Tsawwassen, for their support and kindness over the last few years. A Celebration of Life service will be held at Sharon United Church, 48th Ave & 216th Street in Langley - on Friday, August 13th at 2:00 pm with a tea to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart & Stroke Foundation www.heartandstroke.bc.ca or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.

SACRE Ellen Josephine, Ellen 78, died with her children by her side, on July 22, 2010 in Vancouver. She died of natural causes. Long time resident of Tsawwassen. When told that she will be missed, Ellen smiled and said “I will miss me, too.” At her request, there will be a private ceremony celebrating her life. A long time lover of music, Ellen requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Cecilia Anne (Coombs) Lee was born on November 19, 1947 in Bakersfield, CA. One of five children, she spent her childhood in a busy home and enjoyed playing piano. In 1965 she met Philip Lee while both were working at a resort in Ontario and two years later they were married in Ventura, California and moved to Toronto. Quite quickly they decided to head west, bought a home in Tsawwassen and soon after had a daughter, Andrea Gail in 1973 and a son Steven Jeffrey in 1976. Cecilia was diagnosed with cancer in May, 2009, and after a courageous battle, went to her eternal home on Wednesday, July 28, 2010. She is survived by her husband of 42 years, Philip, son Steven (Kelly), daughter Andrea Soltis (Michael), grandchildren Kaya and Zane Soltis, parents Stanley and Margaret Coombs, sisters Sharron Chanda (Larry) and Gail Snedeker (Dave), brothers Kenneth Coombs and Steven Coombs (Sally), as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. Cecilia loved the outdoors and her garden. She will be remembered as an enthusiastic runner, skier, kayaker and gardener. Cecilia’s passion was teaching. She loved the interaction with her students and co-workers and encouraged the children to do and be the best that they could. Each year, she would take her students on a weekly run. Cecilia loved to play the piano at church and blessed so many wonderful friends each Sunday morning. A celebration of Cecilia’s life will be held on Tuesday, August 3rd at St. David’s Anglican Church, 1115 – 51A Street, Tsawwassen, B.C. at 2:00 pm with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, the family invites contributions to the Canadian Cancer Society.
