The movie is based on the Nickelodeon cartoon series that has the main character, a 10-year-old boy named Timmy Turner, going through misadventures after he receives two fairy godparents who are able to grant him wishes. The cartoon series takes place in the fictional town of Dimmsdale.

The judge in the Carol Berner trial is expected to deliver his verdict next week. Berner is charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing

death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm in the 2008 crash that killed four-year-old Alexa Middelaer and seriously injured her aunt Daphne Johanson. After four weeks of testimony and legal arguments, which included a request by Berner’s defence team to have the charges dropped, the trial wrapped up June

24 in Surrey Provincial Court. Judge Peder Gulbransen is expected to deliver his judgment on Tuesday morning. On May 17, 2008, Alexa and Johanson were feeding a horse in the 4300-block of 64th Street in East Ladner when a car plowed into them. The little girl was fatally wounded and died later at B.C.

Children’s Hospital. Johanson was seriously injured and spent four weeks in hospital. Berner, 58, has pleaded not guilty to the charges but did admit through her lawyer she was driving the car at the time of the collision. Visit www.delta-optimist.com for the latest.

In a news release, the university stated that president David Atkinson, in the interests of transparency and openness, “has initiated a review that will examine the circumstances of Kwantlen’s $50,000 fee for service research contract with Century Group as well as the expectations attached to its current memorandum of understanding, also with Century Group.” Kwantlen’s board of governors will receive the findings of the review, which will then also be made public. The issue was raised last week when the Tsawwassen residents’ group Southlands the Facts said information obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request revealed that in the spring of 2009 Century Group and Kwantlen signed a memorandum in which Century agreed to pay the university consulting services fees, and to provide additional endowment funding upon the approval of a development application for Southlands. Century Group has been marketing its development proposal by using research performed by Kwantlen promoting agriculturalurbanism, however, neither party disclosed the relationship and funding agreement, say opponents. These babies should arrive within a couple of weeks, to be followed by more puppies from Guiding Eyes for the Blind later in the year. Breeding guide dogs has changed tremendously in the past few years, says Thornton, who estimates she’s seen the birth of more than 200 puppies. Thornton says cooperation between accredited guide dog schools around the world is helping produce better and healthier puppies and therefore better guide and autism support dogs. For now, all Diamond’s

puppies need is to sleep, eat and cuddle with mom, but soon they will require homes. “We are looking for very special volunteers,” says Thornton. “We need people who are not working or those who work from their homes as they are able to better socialize the puppies. “And socializing the puppies is only part of the deal,” she laughs. “Our raisers get in a lot of socializing as well — we all go out for lunch after puppy school, get together for other outings and it’s simply a lot of fun.” Anyone interested in taking one of Diamond’s pups should call 604-940-4504 or e-mail burritt@telus.net.

A fifth candidate is about to join the Delta by-election race. Amy Ghuman Sara has taken out the required forms from municipal hall and will make a formal announcement next week, said her husband Vince, noting she’s been receiving a lot of support to run. Ghuman Sara ran for municipal office for the first time in 2008. While she didn’t win a Delta council seat, she had a strong showing by appearing in the top six in a few areas of North Delta. In that election, one of the issues she said needed to be addressed was Delta not getting good value in its capital projects as well as the need to include the public in capital project planning. With the nomination deadline still three weeks away, four other candidates have already come forward to announce their intention to seek the council seat left vacant by the death of George Hawksworth this spring. Ian Paton, Sylvia Bishop, Sandeep Pandher and Kathleen Higgins are vying for the seat in the Sept. 18 by-election. Paton has been endorsed by the Delta Independent Voters’ Association, which is made up of Mayor Lois Jackson and councillors Scott Hamilton and Robert Campbell. Bishop is supported by Southlands the Facts, a

The design brief made public by the Century Group outlines a “food and agriculture precinct” that would include the education facility as well as a farmers’ market, light processing facilities, a culinary school and an urban commercial “high street” driven by food sales and fresh food restaurants. However, opponents to development on the 538-acre property, zoned agricultural but not in the Agricultural Land Reserve, are demanding the entire

site be used for soil-based farming. In an interview last week, Southlands the Facts spokesperson Dana Maslovat said the controversy needs a permanent solution, which would involve raising money through various sources, including municipal government, to buy the land. “My personal view is I don’t have a problem with the developer making a profit on the land or being paid what the land is worth, but it would come at a nodevelopment baseline,” he said.

When most people think of diamonds, they think of love and caring, relationships and partners for life. Puppies don’t necessarily come to mind. But puppies there are ... nine of them at the home of Ken and Roberta Whiley, where Diamond, a fouryear-old yellow Labrador, has produced a family destined to bring love, caring and a special partnership into people’s lives. Linda Thornton, puppy raising manager for the Ladner-based B.C. Guide Dog Services, can hardly control her excitement as she talks about the furry bundles. “It’s hard to believe it when you look at these little

guys, but they are going to make a huge difference in the lives of children with autism and visually impaired people. Having a trusted canine partner is about love, trust and partnerships. Diamond has truly produced gems.” Diamond and her partner, Tiller, a golden retriever, are both breeding dogs for the local charity and the happy event took place Tuesday night. “There were just seven on the ultrasound and we ended up with two surprises,” says Thornton, who was there as the pups made their way into the world. “We’re just waiting to make sure all of them are healthy and happy.”

Saying the information has been made public on his website, Century Group president Sean Hodgins last week said he was disappointed opponents to his

Meanwhile, former mayoralty candidate Mike Reilly may enter the byelection. When contacted by the Optimist this week, Reilly said he was considering running. He recently made news when he lost his case in the Tax Court of Canada after claiming he should be allowed to deduct campaign expenses, which he paid himself, because they were a business expense. The municipal clerk will accept nominations from Aug. 3 to 13. “For me, the short-term goal is that it has to be clear to the developer and in the Tsawwassen Area Plan that this will not be developed. I think if that clear message is sent, now we can maybe start to negotiate with him if he’s willing to look at other alternatives.” The Southlands has been the thorniest issue the Tsawwassen Area Plan Committee has had to deal with as it tries to come up with an updated area plan. The committee’s next meeting has been rescheduled for July 28 at municipal hall.

NEXUS hours extended at Pt. crossing

The Canada Border Services Agency extended the hours for the NEXUS trusted traveller program at the Point Roberts crossing as of yesterday. From July 23 to Sept. 17, NEXUS lane hours will be extended to 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week. On Sept. 18, the offseason NEXUS hours will take effect, with the NEXUS lane running from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. The NEXUS program is designed to expedite border clearance for lowrisk, pre-approved travellers into Canada and the United States. Approximately 27 per cent of travellers being processed at the Point Roberts crossing by the Canada Border Services Agency are registered in the NEXUS program. For those interested in joining the program, applications can be accessed by visiting www.cbsa.gc.ca. NEXUS is offered at three Lower Mainland border crossings.

Woman falls victim to fraudster

Caller convinces Tsawwassenite to send money to get her ‘son’ out of a Quebec jail The Delta police department is warning the community of a telephone fraud that recently surfaced in Tsawwassen. A woman who lives in the 1200-block of Hunter Road received a call from a man who convinced her that he was her son who lives out of province. He told her he had been in a traffic accident in Quebec and suffered a broken nose, which resulted in him sounding differently. He claimed he had been drinking and driving and was under arrest. He apologized profusely but asked her to send him an undisclosed amount of money to

pay his lawyer and his fine. She agreed. Because he was in jail, he told her she could not send the money to his account, but rather he had to have his friend pick it up. He told her to get the money and forward it through Canada Post to his friend, John Martin, in Quebec. She obtained the cash and transferred the money through a Canada Post outlet in Tsawwassen. She later received a call from Martin, who apologized for getting her son into this mess. He then asked her for the reference number provided by Canada Post so he could claim the

The annual report outlining the salaries and expenses of each civic politician was received at a recent Delta council meeting. The municipality is required to annually present a list of the remuneration, taxable benefits and

expenses of the mayor and members of council. In 2009, Mayor Lois Jackson received a salary $69,212.76 plus $39,109.50 in an expense allowance. She claimed $6,665.42 in expenses plus an additional $2,907.80 in expenses in her role as police board chair. Under the Community

Charter, elected officials are allowed to claim the costs incurred while they are representing the corporation, engaging in municipal business or attending a meeting, course or convention. In total, the 2009 expense allowance for Delta’s elected officials was $145,698.36. Collectively, $41,406.81 was claimed

The provincial government’s Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement branch, in co-operation with local law enforcement, will be out in strength this summer to ensure commercial vehicles are meeting safety standards. “This summer’s focused enforcement on the Lower Mainland by our ministry’s CVSE staff is part of increased roadside enforcement right across the province,” Transportation Minister Shirley Bond said Monday. “We want to raise awareness in the commercial transport industry about safety on the roads, and that we expect safety standards to be met.” Inspectors will be targeting load security issues and the mechanical condition of commercial vehicles, including long haul trucks, local taxis and farm vehicles. The results of these roadside inspections are used to identify trends in mechanical maintenance, which may result in increased focus on some designated inspection

The inspections will take place on major highways and connecting roads between Delta and Hope. The province recently introduced amendments to the Motor Vehicle Act to provide greater oversight of the vehicle inspection process. With these amendments, it allows inspectors to immediately seize the vehicle’s licence plates if critical defects are found. Over 40 per cent of trucks inspected earlier this year during a commercial vehicle blitz in Delta failed. Delta police teamed up with a number of agencies to set up stations around the community over three days, inspecting a total of 448 trucks. Of those, 42 per cent were given an out of service order. The numbers, however, do not accurately reflect

the status of the commercial transport industry, said Delta police spokesperson Const. Cal Traversy at the time. “Our percentage of out of service orders issued and citations issued will be higher due to our targeting strategies. But they do imply that there are a significant number of trucks on the road that due to either owner/operator ignorance or indifference, are non-compliant and represent a safety concern for the driver, other motorists and pedestrians,” he told the Optimist following the inspection blitz. In an interview a few months prior, a Ministry of Transportation spokesperson also said the high failure rate of commercial trucks inspected in Delta didn’t represent the general condition of big rigs on the road.

Federal funding for museum

The Delta Museum and Archives Society has received $25,000 from the federal government to support a digitization project to improve collections management. The project will take place following the relocation of the archives to a state-of-the-art facility in the former municipal hall in Ladner. Delta-Richmond East MP John Cummins made the announcement Wednesday on behalf of Heritage Minister James Moore.

MURPHY’S LAW At first blush, the lawsuit seems absolutely ludicrous. How could a Delta woman possibly hold others responsible for the fact she, and she alone, gambled away over $300,000? Yet a lawsuit was filed in B.C. Supreme Court last week alleging the B.C. Lottery Corporation and two casinos should be held accountable because they failed to prevent her from gambling away a fortune over a three-year period. What about exercising a little self-control? What about taking responsibility for your own behaviour? Why the need to blame someone else for your plight? Should I be suing Safeway for not keeping me out of the potato chip aisle? Shouldn’t an alert stock person come out of nowhere to blindside me as I agonize between barbecue and salt and vinegar? I don’t mean to make light of addiction, and that’s surely what this poor woman suffers from, but at the end of the day people do have to take responsibility for their own actions. Having said that, as B.C. delves deeper and deeper into the lucrative world of gambling, including the introduction of online gaming this week, more has to be done to protect the vulnerable. The woman in question enrolled in the lottery corporation’s Voluntary SelfExclusion Program in 2007 in an effort to keep herself from gambling. The fact she managed to lose a whopping $331,000 in the three years she was in the program suggests it’s not doing a very good job. Now you could argue it shouldn’t be up to casinos to keep tabs on problem gamblers, but if government wants millions in gaming revenues streaming into its coffers annually, it’s also got to take responsibility for an increase in social ills that come along with it. The self-exclusion program sounds like a logical step, but when it appears to be far more policy than practice, it’s of little help to those who fruitlessly court Lady Luck. The program is intended to identify self-admitted problem gamblers and escort them off the premises, but somehow repeatedly overlooked the Delta woman as she lost over three hundred grand. I bet if she took the casino for that type of cash they’d know exactly who she was and when she was playing. Funny how that works. In the days after the lawsuit was filed, public reaction was swift and indignant, heaping scorn on the woman for not taking responsibility for her actions. There’s absolutely no doubt she deserves blame for the predicament she finds herself in, but she might not be the only one with some culpability here.

Popular Centennial is lagging behind other area beaches MIKE SCHNEIDER

COMMUNITY COMMENT When was the last time you went down to Centennial Beach? Boundary Bay Regional Park is not only a local treasure, it is a regional destination that is used by close to one million visitors a year. Many, if not most of the park users, are not from Delta. Obviously, highest use is in times like these while we are enjoying an incredible stretch of sunshine. When summer tides offer choice, I prefer heading down to the beach on an incoming tide from a late morning low. The countless hours I have spent in my youth at Spanish Banks and here with my daughter in her younger years in these situations have been some of the most memorable times of my life. The shrieks of mock despair as I stood with the kids on crumbling castles as the tide rushed in mixed beautifully with the temperature

of the water and the embracing warmth of late afternoon sun on slightly dry and salty skin. Wafting in the distance was the smell of malt vinegar. The sensory melding on these perfect days should be bottled somehow. Just last week I had occasion to visit Spanish Banks on the way to a meeting at UBC. The tide was out and the concession bunker at Spanish Banks West had just opened. I was the first customer of the day and took my vinegar-laden fries out on the low tide for a great 20-minute stroll. Sweet memories of youth ran through me with each bite. The bunkers at Spanish Banks have been upgraded to some degree over the years. They are run by Metro Vancouver Parks and serve traditional beach fare that is great. In the big city at Kits Beach and English Bay, real restaurants have been added to the beach fare menu for the non fries and burger crowd and I think that is a good thing, especially if you don’t spend a bunch of time standing on crumbling castles anymore. The first out of the chute was the Watermark, a Barnett brothers offering. It took a while to go through the process but eventually this perceived assault on the

community made its point and has added a lovely choice for beach goers since. Just recently the Boathouse took over at this Kitsilano Beach location after an unbelievably short approval process. What is happening here in Delta with our facilities at Boundary Bay Regional Park? Not much. Many years ago an idea for a restaurant at Centennial was shelved. The cold case file was re-opened with an unsolicited proposal in 2004. Metro Parks wanted to see a plan to upgrade the existing bunker and provide for additional amenity in the way of a restaurant and interpretive centre combo. People with money and expertise participated in a process that caved in after six years. Now it would seem, Metro Parks and Delta cannot come to an agreement on where to build a Popsicle stand. Forget about the restaurant for now. Let’s prepare for that potential outcome but let’s get a replacement for a building that is considerably past its shelf life. Boundary Bay Regional Park is for all citizens in Metro Vancouver and we need to keep that front and centre in our decision making and planning process. Let’s get on with it!

People have spoken so now it’s time for democracy to work

Editor: Re: Planning more than a survey, Murphy’s Law, July 10 Before the last provincial election, Gordon Campbell said there would be no HST in B.C. In 2008, the majority of people in South Delta made it quite clear they wanted the power lines buried. However, it doesn’t seem to matter anymore what the majority wants. Those who have the power seem to think they can do what they want and disregard the voice of the people. What happened to democracy? Is it going to happen again with the Tsawwassen Area Plan? As far as I am concerned, the Ipsos Reid poll was as good as a vote. It doesn’t matter whether the planning committee is for or against developing the Southlands. What matters is democracy. The people on the committee deserve to be applauded, respected and thanked for the time and effort they spent to help make our community a better place to live, but this doesn’t give them a mandate to ignore a demo-

cratic process; no one has this right. The committee has heard loud and clear the limits that South Delta residents want, and so it should plan within those boundaries. To say we should “show some respect for the people who have given their time to help draft a plan” at the expense of democracy is wrong. The two are not mutually exclusive. They need to respect the wishes of the community who in turn will respect the work they do so long as it is within the parameters of what the people who live here want. That’s how democracy works. My main concern is not whether the Southlands is developed but the erosion of democracy in our community, province and country. It seems more and more that elected officials think they know what is better for us than we do. Let’s hope the Tsawwassen planning process will not be another example of that. It seems with over 60 per cent, the people have spoken. Ron Beaton

Ban lawn care equipment with two-stroke engines

Editor: It is time for Delta to consider an outright ban on air and noise polluting two-stroke engines for lawn care equipment. While all internal combustion motors produce particulate and greenhouse gases, the two-stroke motor used to power lawn mowers, hedge trimmers and leaf blowers are particularly bad offenders. J. Ward

While working on this campaign, I would say to the people that came to sign the petition, “Do you realize that this is the first time in your life you have actually voted on an issue and you will be heard?” I have never worked on a project that had such a positive, grateful attitude, from both young and old and everyone in between. The people not only signed the petition, but continually thanked us for what we were doing.

In closing, let us not let up on seeing this initiative to the end. We will stand up against any tyranny or dictatorship, we are not sheep, we are a people with a voice. RAMBLING So, you’re planning a jaunt to visit Aunt Matilda in Squireville on the prairies and you haven’t decided which route you’ll follow: No. 3, the southern one, or Trans-Canada Highway, the favourite of truckers and drivers in a heck of a hurry. I chose the one closest to the U.S. border because my destination was near Lethbridge, Alberta, and besides, I think that for scenery and interest, it’s better than the northern one. My destination was Barons, Alberta, a few miles north of Lethbridge, where our family lived until 1922. My father had operated a community newspaper there for several years with connections at Carmangay, Blairmore and Coleman. The Delta Times had closed in 1914 at the beginning of the First World War and the Delta Board

the Gatineau Valley north of Ottawa, a graduate of McGill University a century ago, assumed the ownership and operation of the yearold newspaper in February, 1923, when her husband relinquished the property on the strength of a powerof-attorney that had been negotiated in Barons two years earlier. The full story of that may some day be told but now we are only interested in the 100th anniversary of the village of Barons. My father started The Optimist in March of 1922, but our mother decided to keep my two brothers and me in school until the end of the term, so we arrived in the burgeoning village in July that year. But this ramble was to be a report on the trip my daughter Susan and I made to the anniversary party, the visit with son Gene in Calgary, on to Drumheller and the dinosaur museum, across central Alberta to Saskatchewan Crossing, down the Icefields Highway to Lake Louise and home again by B.C. Highway No. 3.

My father, Vincent Dunning, saw more opportunities in Delta than in the Lethbridge area so decided to investigate the invitation. He sold the Carmangay Sun to Louie Starck, closed the Barons Globe and closed his connections with the papers in the Crowsnest Pass. Starck later sold the Carmangay paper, moved to our neighbouring White Rock and started a newspaper there. Another piece of history lies there to be recounted later. Sufficient equipment to produce a weekly newspaper was found in Vancouver by my father who installed it in a former saloon of the Ladner Hotel on Westham Street, on the corner across from the present-day post office. ‘Winning’ ticket turns helper into loser and contravening the noise bylaw. • July 13, 9:33 p.m., 900-block of 56th Street: A report was received that a male was observed stumbling and having trouble standing upright. Officers attended and found an extremely intoxicated male who appeared to be unable to care for himself. The suspect was arrested and lodged in cells to be released when sober. A notice was given for the suspect to appear in court at a future date. • July 13, 11:45 p.m., 400-block of Milsom Wynd: Complainant reported that two males assaulted her son as he walked through the local park. The suspects, older teens wearing hoodies, punched and kicked the victim and left him lying on the ground. The victim indicated he has no enemies and it was determined the assault was probably a random act. • July 14, 12:47 p.m., 1200-block of Beach Grove Road: Complainant reported that while she was away an unknown person had entered her property and stripped her cherry tree of every single cherry, including the unripe ones.

• July 14, 7:30 a.m., 4900-block of 4th Avenue: Complainant reported that while she was away someone had entered her residence through an unlocked window and stole her laptop computer valued at $600. • July 14, 11:31 p.m., 700-block of 53rd Street: Upon receiving a report that several youths were vandalizing the illuminated sign in front of the secondary school, police apprehended several fleeing male youths. Officers determined there was no damage to the sign other than rearranged letters. One of the youths, who was intoxicated, was taken home to his parents. The file was forwarded to the school liaison officer. • July 15, 1:14 p.m., 1300-block of 56th Street: A local business reported that a man had stolen approximately $50 from their cash register. The suspect was described as a very tanned male wearing a green shirt and tool belt, and carrying a backpack. Ladner • July 14, 7 p.m., 4400block of 57th Street: Complainant reported he

left his unlocked vehicle in the parking lot of Dugald Morrison Park while he was in the park having his dinner. When he returned to his vehicle he found several tools valued at $260 missing. • July 14, 8:34 p.m., Elliott Street and Arthur Drive: Three teenage girls reported a male was videotaping them in the shopping centre and continued to videotape them as they walked to the bus stop. He did not approach them. One of the girls took a photograph of the suspect, which the investigating officer will use to try to identify the man. • July 16, 11:35 a.m., 5200-block of Ladner Trunk Road: A local business reported that graffiti was left on the door and interior of the washroom. The loss prevention officer took pictures of the graffiti, which included the words “Enigma” and “Obscure,” and forwarded them to the

They called a number provided on the ticket and a lottery representative advised them it was a winning ticket for several hundred thousand dollars but they would have to present Canadian “assets” of several thousand dollars prior to receiving the prize. The woman didn’t have the assets. The man and the victim agreed to give her some money for a share of the winnings. The man left and returned with an envelope with “thousands of dollars in it.” The victim went to her bank and obtained a large amount of cash, which she turned over to the woman, but she was still short of the necessary

The woman is described as 60 years old with curly, brown, shoulder-length hair, Spanish speaking and possibly Mexican. The man was short, 35, with a round face. He had a strong accent, which he claimed was Greek, but he may have been Mexican as well. • July 18, 3:33 p.m., 4800-block of Central Avenue: A woman was arrested for breach of a recognizance by police when she was recognized outside her parents’ home. She later complained that while she was under arrest someone broke into her parents’ home, which she had been house-sitting, and stole a 50-inch plasma TV. She believes it was her drug dealer as she had called him just prior to her arrest to deliver drugs to her. It was likely taken to pay the complainant’s debt. The complainant does not want to lay charges, just get the TV back.

Information regarding the vehicle was entered in the national police computer system. • July 12, 1:58 p.m., 5500-block of 14B Avenue: Complainant discovered his wallet was missing from his vehicle, which he had left unlocked in the lane behind his residence. • July 13, 1 a.m., 1600block of 56th Street: An anonymous complainant reported a fire and loud noise coming from the patio of a local restaurant. Officers investigated and found two excessively noisy patrons who indicated they had extinguished a fire in the bushes. One of these patrons was very intoxicated and was uncooperative with police. As part of its farmscaping project, the Earthwise Farm in Boundary Bay is offering a series of Farm Biodiversity Workshops in July and August. A 28-year-old member of our congregation has been suffering from cystic fibrosis since infancy. His physical condition was in a continuous state of regress and he was in desperate need of a double lung transplant. After prayerful consideration, a healing service was held on his behalf. We put James 5 into practice. Four of us met with the patient at hospital while the rest of the church’s elders prayed either individually or gathered at church at the very same time. This healing service took place on June 3. On June 18 the patient called me to let me know he was receiving the transplant. The surgery went remarkably well, so well that he returned home from hospital on July 5.

The key surgeon (a Christian) indicated that his lungs were in much worse shape than anticipated. The surgeon provided a couple of updates to the family members during surgery. Each conversation ending with him saying, “keep praying!” There is still a long way to go for this patient. We continue to pray for him, but not only for him. We also give thanks for the donating person who had the foresight to sign his/her name to an organ donation form. We remain mindful of the grieving family and their loss. We don’t understand how it all works, but I believe God has been mysteriously and wonderfully at work. The prayers of God’s righteous people are powerful and effective! (James 5:16)

sawwassen’s Paul Kloschinsky is happy to be a new member of the League of Canadian Poets. “It’s very gratifying to be recognized ... as a legitimate Canadian poet. It certainly makes up for all the hard work and years of trying. It felt really good.” The group, “a non-profit arts service organization, is the national association of professional publishing and spoken word poets in Canada,” its website states. A committee made up of existing members assesses membership applications. The league was founded in 1966 by a group of five poets and now has almost 600 members. Kloschinsky, who found out he was accepted as a full member a few months ago, says he looks at the membership as a big achievement. “It’s a pretty good club to be in,” he says. Kloschinsky, 46, had his first book, A Time to Cry, published in 2006 and followed that up with two releases in 2007. He’s working on a fourth collection, titled Vice and Virtue, that will cover a

range of topics, including reason, enlightenment and the passing of his father. “The first one was about my period of problems but now, it’s whatever I’m thinking about; a whole bunch of different things.” A Time to Cry is described as a “sincere,

It’s available on iTunes and can be heard on Internet radio stations like Jango. He hasn’t done any live performances as of yet but says he may head into downtown Vancouver to play at some open mic venues. He’s currently writing and recording new songs for a follow up effort. He doesn’t mind juggling his poetry, music and photography work. “I like it. If you get a little stale at something, you can leave it, go to something else and you’re fresh. When that runs out you can come back to the other one and you get a bit better. paper hadn’t made that list. Sea Kayak Adventures promised a wilderness experience extraordinaire. They delivered; Orcas, humpbacks, doll porpoises and eagles littered the landscape, the camp stove fare was gourmet and the guiding, expert. I just hadn’t counted on the burn-your-t.p.-in-thecoffee-can-routine, though it did make for some interesting discussions. Like one night on the Compton Island Indian Reserve. Nell Garvin, of Bellevue, Washington, sips her merlot and says, “I’m going to find an old coffee tin and tell my kids that I have mastered the art of the one-match burn. The key,” she lifts her glass, “is poking it with a stick and holding it aloft.” Allen Early, 46, of Moore, South Carolina, shakes his head. In a deadpan drawl he replies, “Nah. My method’s better. I just light it before I use it.” The tour started in the basement of the Haida-Way Hotel in Port McNeill. Our new guides, Cara Andre and Dan Pichette, are eager and enthusiastic. Andre’s hair is a wonderful halo of springy curls. Pichette has the kind of keenness that looks like he’s ready to start up the Peace Corps, the kind of goshgolly enthusiasm that has me wary. He asks us, “What are you hoping to gain from this trip?”

The aforementioned Early is here with his wife Cathy, a librarian in their small town. “Our friends told us we would either love this ... or it’ll be the end of us.” Garvin, 59, unaware she’s soon to be a one-match burn pioneer, tells us she’s an elementary school nurse and introduces her husband Pat, an emergency room physician. Then she hesitates, “I don’t want to sound like...” she fades off, not quite finishing the thought, “...but I thought it’s basically now or never.” John Ross, 64, fingers his salty red beard. He looks like a sailor from a distant sea. “I’m from Edmonton,” he says in a gravely voice.

It seems Ross is a wayfarer of a different sort. He’s cycled across Canada and pedalled from Paris to Istanbul. Now? He’s ready to kayak. Less than 24 hours later, I’m sitting on a bluff above the aptly named Mossy Cove. A bull kelp forest fans out in the sparkling water below. My husband Kevin leans against a hemlock to read, while our tent glows with the last golden rays of the day. I breathe deep bellyfuls of salty air scented with hot sap and write in my journal about the seal and her pup we saw drifting through that morning’s fog in Telegraph Cove. I remember, too, the eagle wheeling down, talons out, grabbing something

silver from the sea, before returning to its perch to shred it into sushi. Wariness be damned, I am in love with our keener guides. They’re the real thing. Plus, they cook like a dream. We’re all enthusiastic for another reason. Johnstone Straits is renowned for rainy weather. Which is why our daily diet of blue-bowled skies and bleeding-sunsets is so special. Mornings start thick with fog, pushing its thick fingers into coves and leaving shaggy tendrils on rocks. One night in North Bay, I sit with a glass of pinot noir. The fog begins blanketing the bay. I know that I am going to sleep like the dead again tonight.

Except. Kevin and I wake together. The sound is close, filling the tent. I zip out, drawn towards the heavy blowhole exhalations. The moon illuminates the fog. I can see nothing but the glowing thickened air. But my ears are filled with the immense breathing of Orcas, creatures that can weigh up to eight tons. Stories are what bind us. The streets then would have been full of construction and half-completed palazzos, churches would have been freshly built with gleaming stone, and all that fabulous flesh-and-blood art would have been challenging and oh-so-modern to a pair of 1490s eyes.” A confession: I read this novel recently while on holiday in Florence. Some tough lessons for Islanders Junior lacrosse team finds itself staring at elimination after flirting with upsets against powerhouse Adanacs BY

Enjoying the lead for three of six periods against the top junior lacrosse team in the nation was nothing more than a moral victory for the Delta Islanders. Instead of finding themselves in a series against the powerful Coquitlam Adanacs, the Islanders were on the verge of being swept out of the B.C. Junior “A” Lacrosse League playoffs. Delta dropped a 6-5 overtime heartbreaker in game one of the best-offive series last Sunday, then failed to capitalize on a big first period lead in game two Tuesday, losing 10-7 at the Ladner Leisure Centre. The Adanacs, who finished 19-1-1 in the regular season and are hosting next month’s Minto Cup, had an opportunity to end the series last night on their home floor (beyond the Optimist deadline). It was a semi-final series Islanders general manager and head coach Greg Rennie was hoping to avoid despite his team riding a franchise best seven game win streak. He not only believed a match-up with the second place New West Salmonbellies was more favourable, but it would also mean being only three wins away from clinching a berth in the nationals. Still, the Islanders have shown no signs of being intimidated and probably

deserve more for their effort so far, especially in game one. They enjoyed a 2-0 lead after one period and were clinging to a 4-3 advantage with 62 seconds remaining when Robert Church tied the game. The Adanacs would go on to outscore Delta 2-1 in the 10-minute overtime period. The loss ruined an outstanding 51-save performance by goaltender Zach Boychuk. If the Islanders were still stinging from the defeat, they didn’t show it two nights later as they stunned Coquitlam by jumping out to a 6-1 lead in the opening period. The problem was how much time remained on the clock as the visitors erupted for seven unanswered goals in the second period and never looked back. “Our focal point of the series was winning the second period and when you lose it 7-0 it will definitely hurt you,” understated Rennie. “They really pushed the fastbreak and caught us going from offence to defence a bit. “It was a tough one to swallow but we are playing really hard. This is a valuable experience for us playing these guys. We are in uncharted waters for Delta Islanders lacrosse. We are definitely making a series of it when people thought we might just roll over and go away.” Adanacs goalie Brodie McDonald held the Islanders

Red Sox teams complete golden sweep in Burnaby The Ladner Red Sox Mosquito AAA and Pee Wee A all-star baseball teams both played this past weekend in the Burnaby Summer Fun Tournament. The Mosquito AAA team, coached by Rob Bogress, Morgan Thompson, Todd Strukoff and Todd Nevens, won all three of their round robin contests to place them in the championship game against the host team, the Burnaby Braves. It proved to be a tight affair with the teams deadlocked after six innings, sending the boys into an extra inning. The Red Sox were able to run in three in the seventh and then held the Braves to only one, clinching the gold. The Mosquito AAA players are: Neil O`Connor, Jarad Leversage, Tyler McLennan, Justin Chan,

Quinn Cole, Parker Strukoff, Jordan Nevens, Jordan Bogress, Cameron Thompson, Cameron Gray, Tyler Schmidt and Josh Swidinsky. At the same time on a diamond across the park, the Ladner Peewee “A” All-stars quickly became the tournament team of the summer with their second straight gold medal triumph. The team is coached by Geoff Moubert, Sam Dawson and Brian Newman. The Red Sox thank the BMBA for hosting a well run tournament and all the coaches, parents and spectators. Regular summer league play concludes this week with both teams hoping to qualify for the provincial championships coming up later this month.

The Richmond Attack had caused South Delta nothing but problems during the regular season and to defeat them, the Destroyers would have to play their best game of the year. Kiana Brown’s leadoff homer was definitely a good sign and resulted in an early 2-0 lead. Emma White, Bianca Copeland and Kirsten Dance each contributed with a hit as the Destroyers fought valiantly. Unfortunately, Richmond proved that its bronze medal in the tournament was welldeserved as it outlasted the Destroyers 11-9 in a tense, back-and-forth contest. Stevens pitched six solid innings in the loss, which, as it turned out, was the finest game the Destroyers played all year. Coaches, Craig Merritt and Sheri Mouzakis thank all the parents for their contributions to an outstanding season, as well as the team-members that were unable to make the trip —Alicia Berezay, Brittany O¹Connell, Mirren Robson-Smillie, Megan Matheson and Sydney Born. The South Delta Destroyers are back from a successful trip to the Pee Wee C Girls Fastpitch Provincials in Quesnel. The Destroyers are unique in that they are a combination of players from the Ladner and Tsawwassen Minor Fastpitch Associations — a first for C level ball in South Delta. They had a strong regular season, battling competition from North Delta, Tsawwassen, Ladner and Richmond. As the Provincials drew near, the team came together to play its best ball of the year. In Quesnel, it became clear, once the draw was set, that the tournament was going to be an uphill battle as the Destroyers faced very strong teams in round-robin play from Fleetwood, Mission and Richmond. First up were the eventual champions, Fleetwood. The Destroyers relied on the stellar defence of Jessie Lynes and Tayler Brown, as well as the pitching of Alli Stevens, to keep them close in a hard fought 6-3 loss that could have gone either way. Mission was up next and the South Delta girls ran right smack into a pitcher at the top of her game. Mission prevailed 8-2 as great catches by Chanel Frederickson and Zoe Mydansky, and solid pitching from Stevens and Olivia Merritt, kept their team within striking distance. It was these two difficult games that set the table for what was to be the Destroyers’ finest moments in the tournament. The next morning against the top Quesnel team, the locals exploded for a 175 victory. Lucy Fryer, Leah Gardener and

FALCOS Anne It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother Anne Falcos on July 21, 2010. Anne was predeceased by her son Alexander (1980) and her husband John (2003). She will be fondly remembered for her strength and positive outlook on life. Anne is survived by her children, Nicholas (Elaine), Stephen, Julia (Bill), Tony (Gil) and grandchildren Andrea, Alexa, Ivan, Monica, Jonathan and Samantha. Brothers, Henry (Moira), John (Betty), nieces and nephews and long time friend Norma Latimer. The family would like to thank Dr Germeinhardt for the marvelous and constant care she gave to our Mom. In lieu of flowers, donations maybe made to Delta Hospital or the Irene Thomas Hospice where Anne received wonderful care during the last few weeks of life. Age 42, passed away on July 18, 2010 at Delta Hospice after a 3-year battle with cancer. Frieda, who cherished being a mother, is survived by her two sons Layton (8) and Aiden (6) Foster. Frieda will be greatly missed by her parents Evert and Marie Neef, sister Marie, brothers John and Ted (Mary), and their children, as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Frieda will be remembered for her strong spirit and her love of life, family and friends. A special thanks to Dr. Paul Klimo who gave her the chance to fight and helped her along the way. In lieu of flowers, donations to Lions Gate Hospital Foundation, Dr. Paul Klimo Fund would be greatly appreciated. Shirley died peacefully at home surrounded by love. Predeceased by her brother Leslie in 1967. She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Glen, 2 daughters Cyndi (Don) of Ladner and Melinda (Kurt) of Nanaimo and 5 grandchildren, Rick, Jessica, Jakob, Andrea and Christine, sister-in-law Willy, nephews Stephen and Charles. Shirley was raised in Clinton, BC and attended Normal School in Victoria. After marrying Glen and teaching for a few years in Alberni, Victoria and Vancouver they moved to Ladner to raise their family. Shirley was an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels, Ladner United Church and the Delta Hospital Auxiliary, later in Nanaimo teaching the seashore unit with the University Women’s Club and with the United Church Women. We would like to thank all of the doctors, nurses, family and friends for their loving care and support. A memorial service will be held on July 24, 2010 at 3pm at St. Andrew’s United Church at 311 Fitzwilliam Street in Nanaimo . In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the BC Cancer Foundation.

SAWATSKY Amy Margaret Amy, age 88, transitioned peacefully on the morning of July 19th, 2010. Amy was born in Sexsmith Alberta on January 2nd,1922. Amy was predeceased by her husband, Walter on August 17th 1989. Amy is survived by her two sons, Stan and Ken (Norah), grandchildren Stacy (Jim) and Julie (Clint) , great grandsons Travis, Bryce and Devon and her youngest sister Elizabeth. Amy had a generous heart and endless energy when it came to helping others. She will be remembered for her service and contribution to making the world a better place for all those around her. There will be a funeral service at the Ladner Baptist Church on Thursday. July 29th at 1:30pm. In honour of Amy, please donate to your favorite charity or give generously of your time to those in need.
