Tour de Delta keeps rolling throughout weekend

Racing begins at 5:15 p.m. and continues through to 9 p.m. The annual cycling weekend, which got underway last night with the MK Delta Prologue in North Delta, continues tomorrow morning with the White Spot Road Race. The women will do all their 85 kilometres of racing in Tsawwassen, while the men will begin their 140-kilometre trek in North Delta. The finish line for both races is at Winskill Park. It’s not all competitive cycling, however, as the weekend will also feature a Community Ride and Pancake Breakfast this morning at Holly Park and a Kids Crit and wheelbarrow races this afternoon in Ladner Village.

A major housing development could be on its way at the Tsawwassen First Nation reserve. A request for proposals has been issued by Colliers International to purchase and develop 50 hectares (123 acres) that has the potential for 1,100 single-family lots or multiplefamily housing. The land, located between Highway 17 and Tsawwassen Drive North, would be purchased

on a 99-year prepaid lease. Chief Kim Baird told the Optimist the project is not an initiative of the band’s leaders, but individual members who own the land under what’s known as fee simple interest. She said the land is in an “enterprise zone” within the TFN’s land use plan approved by members last year. Under the zoning, a variety of uses would be permitted except industrial. “If it complies with the existing land use plan, they won’t need (band council) approval. The land

use plan sets out densities and permissible uses,” said Baird. “But in reality, as the lands get developed, council and our staff will have to be involved in it, ensuring there’s roadways and proper infrastructure. So there will be regulatory involvement from our government.” Last month an industrial park, the Tsawwassen Gateway Logistics Centre, was launched on the reserve, marking the band’s first major post-treaty economic initiative. Baird said the TFN is currently

focusing on industrial development opportunities. The band is also in talks with a company about opening retail in its commercial zone. Wanting the develop carefully, the band, for the time being, isn’t looking at building housing, said Baird, noting she sees some exciting possibilities down the road. “We’re taking advantage of the most feasible opportunities first. Best to wait on recall, Zalm says

Fight HST leader believes early next year would be opportune time to target Liberal MLAs BY

The leader of Fight HST wants opponents of the new tax to hold off on MLA recall campaigns until at least early next year. Bill Vander Zalm, who this week launched legal action to have the controversial harmonized sales tax declared unconstitutional, said despite the groundswell of opposition, recalling Liberal MLAs would be a challenging exercise that would have to be done in the right way at the right time. “The difficult part for me, and the Fight HST strategy group, is to hold back these people. They’ve

been through this process and they’re all enthusiastic and they want to keep going,” the Ladner resident and former B.C. premier told the Optimist this week. Fight HST delivered more than 700,000 signatures collected on a province-wide petition to repeal the tax, which began July 1, to Elections BC. The group needed signatures from 10 per cent of voters in all 85 ridings, but Fight HST says it reached or surpassed the 15 per cent mark in every constituency. Another course of action being contemplated is a recall campaign targeting a certain number of Liberal MLAs. Under recall legislation, signatures are needed

from a minimum of 40 per cent of eligible voters in a riding. Once given the green light by Elections BC, a recall campaign lasts for 60 days. Vander Zalm said a recall couldn’t be launched until 18 months after the last provincial election, which would make the earliest possible campaign beginning in mid-November, which wouldn’t be an ideal time with the busy Christmas season just around the corner. “If I could advise anybody, I’d say hold off until after the new year. After then, you could probably get two or three going,” he said. An example of the dif-

ficulty in getting an MLA unseated is the unsuccessful campaign against Delta South Liberal MLA Val Roddick eight years ago. Roddick, unpopular for not speaking out against cuts to Delta Hospital, faced a recall campaign launched by Tsawwassen eye specialist Dr. John Bayne. Around 14,000 signatures were gathered, surpassing the required number by about 1,000, however, the campaign still failed due to ineligible signatures. Following that campaign, a report by Harry Neufeld, the province’s chief electoral officer, noted that of those ineligible persons, 68 per cent were residents of Delta but not on the voters

list. Looking back at the challenges he faced and what HST opponents will likely encounter, Bayne told the Optimist the biggest problem is the inadequacy of the voters list. “We had almost a third of our signatures rejected because they were not on the voters list,” he said. “But there has been a major change since then where there’s a form on your income tax where you can sign off so that they can use your information to update the voters list, so hopefully the voters list will be somewhat more up to date.” Vander Zalm said a recall campaign would be difficult

TFN from page 1 a tax base to support our community and governance, we also want to be judicious on how we develop our lands.” If a buyer is found, the project would be the first major housing development built on TFN land for some time, as well as the biggest. Back in the mid-1970s there was a proposal to build a 700- unit singlefamily modular home development, but that never went ahead. Fast-forward a few years and the band had a pair of subdivisions eventually built — Stahaken and then Tsatsu Shores — that house 500 non-native residents.

The latest plan, though, is huge in comparison, adding several thousand newcomers. Delta South MLA Vicki Huntington said it would be a huge addition to the housing already set aside in the TFN’s land use plan. Huntington said she’s worried non-native residents living on the reserve will be “disenfranchised” because they’d have no say in band affairs or representation from Delta. “They’re non-members, they do not have the right to vote and I have said to the province and feds over and over again when the treaty was being developed that

I wouldn’t be surprised if it was anti-charter and unconstitutional,” she said. “I don’t know how you can deny a Canadian citizen the right to vote.” Paula Kolisneck, a Delta policy analyst, confirmed the non-native residents living on TFN land can no longer vote in Delta municipal elections because the TFN has become a separate municipality following the treaty. The TFN treaty officially took effect in April 2009, the first urban treaty in the province. Saying Delta doesn’t have any control over development on the reserve, municipal planner Tom Leathem noted the band’s land use plan was given

still has to go back before Delta council one last time for final approval. Delta has not permitted secondary suites, but for years has not tried to close them unless there are complaints that haven’t been resolved. The new bylaw would pave the way for Delta to join most other municipalities in allowing suites. Under the regulations, the units must abide by certain safety and building code requirements as well as pay utility charges. At the hearing, council

heard from several residents who were supportive of the proposed bylaw changes and a few who had concerns. Coun. Anne Peterson said last month the goal is not to have homes that have several suites being rented out by absentee landlords. “Council does not want to see houses that are turned into mini apartment buildings, where you have two, three or four suites,” she said. “I wouldn’t want to see more than one per house because you end up with

ridiculous combinations and way too many people in a building that’s not being cared for. There’s a couple of areas in Ladner where that’s starting to be a problem and certainly there’s areas in North Delta where that’s a problem. We want owners of houses to do it responsibly.” According to staff report, as of May 12, there were 2,447 known secondary suites in Delta, of which 1,431 are paying additional utility fees. At 1,776, North Delta has the most suites.

About 20 canoes with 350 paddlers spent much of July 1 to 9 making their way from Port Moody to Crescent Beach for Paddling Together 2010. The joint initiative between DFO and law enforcement is aimed at helping First Nation youth gain a better appreciation of their culture. The canoe convoy made several stops along the way, including a couple of local events — a special welcome from the Tsawwassen First Nation at Wellington Point Park on July 6 and a dinner hosted by the Delta police department on July 7. One person was injured Thursday afternoon after an industrial explosion at a factory in the Tilbury Industrial Park. Delta emergency personnel were called to Zodiac Hurricane Technologies in the 7800block of Vantage Way just before 2 p.m. after a small explosion at the factory, which manufactures Zodiac inflatable boats. “They use acetone in their manufacturing process and, for an undetermined reason, it appears this product erupted,” said Delta police spokesperson A/Sgt. Paul Eisenzimmer. “Acetone is an organic compound that is highly flammable.” The explosion did not result in a fire, however, one employee, an approximately 40-yearold man, suffered burns to about 25 per cent of his body. He was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital. His name is not being released. WorkSafe BC is heading the investigation into this incident, along with the Delta police and fire departments.

Asked for his response to the survey results and what it could mean for his proposed 1,900-unit housing proposal, which would include land handed over to Delta for agricultural urbanism, Century Group president Sean Hodgins told the Optimist he was heartened that over 2,000 people took the time to voice their support for his vision, but also humbled that over 3,000 said they wanted the status quo. As far as the current area plan process, Hodgins said he hopes the committee looks at something bold for the future of Tsawwassen. “If you follow the survey results, the same people against change for the Southlands don’t want change in the town centre either. When asked if council could end up removing the Southlands as a topic for debate once the committee submits its final recommendations,

had garnered 32 medals: six gold, 11 silver and 15 bronze. In addition, Marilyn Stewart, a Grapes 4 U entrant, won the prestigious Best of Show Award, for any kit-made wine in any of the 50 categories. To top it off, Grapes 4 U was named U-Vint of the Year, an exceptional international accomplishment for a little company from Ladner. Wines were judged using a 20-point evaluation system. Judges compared appearance, aroma, taste, after-taste and overall impression of the various wines. Grapes 4 U has operated a “U-Vint” in Ladner for 18 years, an establishment where hobby wine enthusiasts make and bottle their own from kits. Initially these enthusiasts came because of the price. They were able to make

Ladner’s Grapes 4 U was named U-Vint of the Year at an international competition in the U.S. this spring. The signature periodical in the industry is WineMaker magazine, which is published in Vermont. WineMaker holds an annual competition in which amateur vintners can have their wines appraised by professional judges. This year, 4,508 bottles of wine were judged in 50 categories, representing the single largest and most diverse collection of amateur wines ever assembled under one roof and the largest wine competition of its kind in the world. Delta owns the property through a tax default a number of years ago. “There’s a lot of work to be done to get these sites to a developable state,” he said. Delta has an industrial lands initiative that breaks down the Tilbury area into four zones. “Many of the properties are totally underutilized and a lot people are just sitting on properties not knowing what way to turn,” Jackson said, adding Delta is working with landowners and encouraging them to consolidate. Delta is focusing on Zone C, a 150-acre area that has multiple narrow parcels under different ownership.

Delta is looking at using tax relief as an incentive for companies to redevelop industrial land in the Tilbury area, says Mayor Lois Jackson. Jackson and community planning director Tom Leathem were the guest speakers at a Delta Chamber of Commerce luncheon last week at the Tilbury fire hall. “Council has talked about reducing taxation if people are going to be investing in their properties over a period of years,” she said. “There’s a lot of work to do and it really comes down to the landowners.” There are a variety of financial incentives that can be looked at and brought forward to council, said Leathem, noting that industrial development is expensive. “The payoff will be longterm. Those tax revenues will roll in and more than offset the costs associated with short-term incentives,” he said. From a tax perspective, an undeveloped piece of industrial land, perhaps used for container storage, at about 10 acres would generate around $90,000 in tax revenue for Delta, he said, adding that a similar sized site that’s fully developed could generate about $400,000 in annual taxes. President Paul Fernandez said the Tsawwassen-based company was retained by the GMTO Corporation in Pasadena, California — a private, not-for-profit consortium of institutions from the United States, South Korea and Australia that will build and operate the Giant Magellan Telescope — to install Infor FMS SunSystems 5.4 accounting software. The telescope project will cost approximately $800 million and take eight years to complete. Slated for completion in 2018, the telescope is far larger than any other ever built. It will answer many of the questions at the forefront of astrophysics today.

I have just read the desperate summer plea from the First United Mission in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Help, the food cupboard is bare! It is always thus in summer. Many of us are incredibly generous to those in need during the Christmas season. Yet in the middle of July it is as though our generosity has gone on holiday. Children in need are as hungry in July as they are at Christmas. Loneliness, fear and want work 24/7, 365 days a year. The Gospels tell us that Jesus went out alone to pray, to talk with God and to refresh himself. The disciples often came looking for him in a panic because people were constantly seeking his help. Jesus would always respond because, as he told his disciples, he had come to preach the “Good News.”

Who Can Vote in the Election?

In order to vote in the Local Government By-Election a person must, on the day of voting, qualify either as a Resident Elector or Non-Resident Property Elector. You must not be disqualiﬁed by the Local Government Act or any other enactment from voting in the election and must be registered as a Delta elector.

A Resident Elector must:

• be 18 years of age or older on voting day • be a Canadian citizen • have been a resident of British Columbia for at least six months immediately before voting day • have been a resident of Delta for at least 30 days before voting day

The Delta Hospital Foundation announced that Jason Speidel from Delta Secondary and Esther Tung from Seaquam Secondary are the recipients of the 2010 Robert T. Reynolds Memorial Scholarship. Both received $500 towards post-secondary education at a June 28 ceremony attended by Georgina Reynolds, wife of the late Robert T. Reynolds. Speidel has been a volunteer at the Delta Hospital extended care unit since 2007 and volunteers with Ladner Boys Soccer and B.C. Special Olympics. Other activities include

Centennial Society’s first chairmen, dedicated much of his time and energy towards obtaining a hospital for Delta. His “call to arms” in 1976 for the residents of Delta to join the society, along with his dedication and perseverance in the face of many obstacles, were major factors in Delta Hospital becoming a reality. The scholarship is open to Grade 12 students in Delta pursuing post-secondary education. An applicant’s success is measured on their participation in extra-curricular activities, community volunteerism and academic achievement.

South Delta Scouts receive organization’s top honour Michael Hughes, a scout counsellor with the Ladner troop. Sixty scouts from across the Fraser Valley received the award on behalf of Canada’s Chief Scout, Governor-General Michaëlle Jean. After the awards were presented by a federal judge, a celebratory banquet was held for families and leaders of the scouts. Scouts learn about and work on citizenship, lead-

ership, personal development and outdoor skills, environmental awareness and conservation and World Scouting to achieve the award. Hughes said the scouts receive a badge to wear on their uniform and a certificate they can present to their high school counsellor to earn credits toward high school graduation. Former governor general Roland Michener created the award.

Writing contest has local roots

Author and storyteller Laura Thomas has once again teamed up with Delta’s parks, recreation and culture department to offer a province-wide summer writing contest for budding authors. Last year, more than 40 young scribes from across the Lower Mainland submitted short stories and this year Thomas expects even more. “Word is getting out beyond the Lower Mainland and because the contest is free, professionally run and easy to enter, it’s proving to be a boon for young writers.” When asked how the contest has influenced their writing, last year’s winners responded enthusiastically. “Being a winner has encouraged me to write more,” said Noa Wang. Monica Nederend said, “It’s given me confidence in my own abilities.” When asked why she entered the contest in the first place, Nederend added, “I’d entered the year before and won second prize. Last year I entered to see if I could top that. The prizes weren’t a bad incentive either.” This year, thanks to ongoing community support, prizes will go to the top six writers in each category. “Last year we gave prizes to the top three,” said Thomas. “I keep saying that Delta is going to be a hot spot for emerging writing talent and, once again, sponsors are stepping up and making that happen.” For the third year, Ricki

New Delta-based sponsors include author Darlene Foster, Werner’s Auto Klinik, Diana Crosby of Ladner Baptist Church, Black Bond Books, Sure Copy and Delta Continuing Education. As in previous years, the winning stories will be published in the Delta Optimist. In addition to offering more prizes, Thomas has made a few other changes this year, including the addition of an “incentive” category for kids ages six to nine, lowering the maximum word count from 1,500 to 1,000, only allowing one story per writer and bringing on a third judge. Thomas said the judges are looking for stories that focus on one well-developed character who has one specific problem that is resolved or not during the story. She also said the winning stories will have less plot and more vivid, sensory detail. Examples can be found on Thomas’ website where the top stories from the 2009 contest are available for reading. Six students from Delta and Richmond represented the region at the Provincial Heritage Fair held in the historic gold rush town of Barkerville over the Canada Day weekend. They joined over 60 young people from all parts of B.C. The four-day celebration included tours of Barkerville, Quesnel and historic Cottonwood House, once a roadhouse for weary miners. The six students were selected for the all-expenses-paid trip during the Richmond-Delta Regional Heritage Fair in early May. Elementary and secondary students submit projects on topics related to local, national or personal heritage. The Delta and Richmond students exhibited their projects in Barkerville on Canada Day. Some 1,200 visitors toured the town and many (including costumed volunteers) stopped to admire the students’ work. Delta student Brendan Melich, 10, said, “I had so much fun in Barkerville, especially meeting the

Museum puts Heritage Fair projects on display

Forty-five Delta students had the opportunity to participate in the eighth annual Richmond Delta Regional Heritage Fair, co-hosted by the Delta Museum and Archives and the Richmond Museum. These students may be out for the summer, but their Heritage Fair projects will be on display for all to view. The Delta Museum and Archives will be showcasing an assortment of the

projects in the gallery cases of the North Delta Recreation Centre, providing the public the opportunity to view history through the eyes of our youth and learn more about Canadian history. “Last year Delta saw two students advance to the Provincial Heritage Fair,” said Carol Ballard, program co-ordinator for the Delta Museum and Archives. “This year Delta had

three students — Nicolas Laviolette from South Park, Zachary Ozey from Delta Secondary and Brenden Melich from McCloskey Elementary.” Commencing Monday, this special exhibition will present varying topics in Canadian history, including Ripple Rock, Delta Manor, the B.C. Electric Railway and the March West RCMP. It will remain on display until Aug. 27.

ellbrook Winery’s sixth annual Summerfest is set for next Saturday. The event will feature a classic car and motorcycle show, a blueberry bakeoff, a pie eating contest and an outdoor market. “We’ve got so many things on the go now and it just keeps growing. When we first started we just had the car show and now we have the car show, a live band, the motorcycles, the farmer market, quilts and miniature trains,” says Wellbrook owner Terry Bremner. Last year’s event attracted about 1,500 people and Bremner expects that number to grow to 2,000 this time around, noting country music radio station JRFM will be onsite.

“It’s a good all around fun family day. There’s something that caters to everybody,” he says. Bremner notes that while nothing new is being added this year, there will be a few changes. Those include more kids activities (including sumo wrestling suits, a bouncy castle and slides), a larger model train setup and the Ladner Cobs Bread sponsoring an expanded blueberry bakeoff contest. Open to the first 20 “amateur chefs” who pre-register, the contest puts a spotlight on desserts made with blueberries. Judging will be done by Cobs bakers and on “taste, appearance, creativity and consumer appeal,” Wellbrook’s website states. Bremner says the pie eating contest is a popular part of the event. “We have all these cars, all these other big things, but that’s probably the hit of the day. People will sit around and wait just for

that,” he says. “We had a guy last year who came specifically for [the pie eating contest] from Vancouver.” There are separate kids and adults categories for the contest. Adult participants get a pie and one minute to see who can eat the most of it. Kids get a minute and a half. “A couple of times, for both kids and adults, we’ve had people almost eat the entire thing,” Bremner says. The outdoor market at Summerfest will have about 25 vendors, and similar to the Ladner Village Market, a variety of farm produce and handmade crafts will be for sale. Rock ‘n roll band Kid Cadillac, a group that plays tunes from the 1950s and ‘60s, will be back at Summerfest for the third time. The band is also scheduled to appear at the Ladner Business Association’s annual

Quilt Walk and Classic Car Show next month in Ladner Village. The non-profit TOOBs, a South Delta service group, will be running a barbecue at Summerfest. The winery is located on a 55-acre heritage farm. Bremner restored a century-old grainery and converted it into the company’s retail and tasting facility. Wellbrook specializes in fruit wines and juices and received the Business of the Year Award at the Delta Chamber of Commerce’s Hats Off to Excellence Gala in 2008. much larger than an average bathroom and you’re bound to feel a little claustrophobic. Now add bad directions that accumulate unwanted hours on a long journey and a torrential downpour once you reach your destination, and what you get easily approaches the definition of a vacation gone wrong. But it’s how you look at the situation that defines your interpretation, and early evening in the Dinosaur Provincial Park in eastern Alberta, this is what I was mulling over. Still, we were in a pretty unique spot, camping in a park that protects the remains of 75-million-yearold dinosaur bones, and boasts 38 different dinosaur species, making it one of the largest collections of fossilized dinosaur remains in the world. Out on tour with park rangers, it was clear that with every step we were treading on history, an ancient world carved into the majestic Badlands. Etched with the colours of time, these stratified mountains descend to the ground with cracked, dry thighs, embracing each other like a community of tightly knit giants. Today the land is a semi-arid desert, but back in the dinosaur heyday it was a beach on the cusp of the Bearpaw Sea, a lush landscape that was a clear favourite among Hadrosaurids, or duckbilled dinosaurs, whose fossils are now found here in abundance. “This one was the size of our bus,” our guide says as she points to the virtually intact fossil of one. Excavated in the late 1960s, this Hadrosaurid is curled

up in an embryonic pose, leading scientists to hypothesize that it drowned by falling in a river, its remains quickly protected by the layers of sandstone and mudstone that accumulated on top of it. Dinosaur Provincial Park is a veritable bone-bed, an 80-square-kilometre stretch of remote Albertan soil that’s richer in dino bone than anywhere else in the world. To truly understand its significance we drive 90 minutes northwest to Drumheller, home to the Royal Tyrrell Museum. The crown jewel of this town of 10,000, the Royal Tyrrell is the only Canadian museum devoted exclusively to paleontology and its exhibits are riveting. There are the recreated figures of the dinosaurs that testify to their immensity, and the opportunity to peek into the laboratories of technicians who are patiently chipping away at rock surrounding newly found fossils. Hands-on displays help kids understand concepts like continental drift and how fossils form. Tucked away in an RV park a few minutes from the town of Drumheller, we sit around a campfire roasting marshmallows while the kids find instant playmates in the community of RVers around us. Yes, this is a far cry from a luxury cruise. But sometimes the road less traveled yields unexpected adventure. or people gardening with annual flowers, July is a peaceful month involving little more than watering and doing deadheading to keep blooms coming. Geraniums, marigolds, sweet peas and dahlias need the most frequent attention. Big, double annual flowerheads usually fall apart after rain and will attract slugs if not deadheaded. But during summer it’s easy to get distracted by visitors and holidays. Hanging baskets are usually the first containers to dry out. Watering them aloft won’t work because dry soil shrinks away from the side of the pot, making a circular channel that water floods through. But dunking hanging baskets deeply in a laundry

with people who want them to look good at all times. With small or new rhododendrons, deadheading is quite do-able and may give them a little more energy for growth. All the long-blooming roses need deadheading a few inches down to a largish leaf. This should be on the outside of the stem. If the mid part of a rose bush gets overcrowded, fungal diseases thrive there. Any time you start watering, try to include the roses. They like a lot of water. When rose leaves have semi-circular holes, that’s good news for the garden because it means you have leaf-cutter bees. These are useful pollinators that work later into the summer than mason bees. The tiny, stripy wasps are also good pollinators. The big yellow-jacket wasps are a scary nuisance that needs to be removed if they have nests around doors or windows or in the ground. But yellow-jackets are also

good pest-controllers and some gardeners leave nests if they’re in non-threatening places. People with wisteria will need to do some after-flowering pruning by cutting the new stems back to three or four buds. As always, ivy needs to be watched to prevent it venturing where it’s not wanted. Variegated ivies should have green reverted shoots taken out right away. In the vegetable garden, green onions and winter beets can still be planted. A lot of gardeners had problems with peas this year. Peas can be planted up to mid-July for a fall harvest. Right now, garlic is producing curly stalks with embryonic, wispy heads of bulbils. When young, these can be cut up and used in stirfries. Sometimes, farmers markets sell them. The Point Roberts Garden Club will host the 11th Point Roberts Garden Tour on Sunday, July 18. The tour, which is self-guided, will take place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Master gardeners will be available throughout the day to answer questions. Historically an annual event, there was no tour in 2009, so this year’s edition has been eagerly awaited by visitors and locals alike. Every year it offers a look into some of the most unusual gardens in the region and this year promises even more diversity and drama. Nine special gardens comprise this year’s tour, including: a tropical paradise complimented by a Japanese Sukiya-inspired dry garden; a storytellers dream with organic vegetables mingling with perennials and shrubs (and pet chickens!); a hilltop country estate setting with views of ocean and horse pastures; and a an artist’s palette of colours in a hidden sanctuary. Ticket prices have been held at $15 (US or CDN) per person and are available at the Blue Heron Gallery and Nielson’s Home Building Center in Point Roberts and Harris Nursery locations in Tsawwassen and Ladner. Admission to the tour also includes afternoon tea at Trinity Lutheran Church. Visitors are reminded that a passport or enhanced drivers licence is required to cross the border. People with perennial gardens can find extra things to do. Late July is a good time to divide and replant bearded irises before they grow into a thick, matted clump with few flowers. Some perennials, like lupins and the tall cranesbills, will re-bloom in early fall if the faded flowers are sheared back. Any deciduous shrubs that have flowered can be pruned now. These include philadelphus (Mock Orange), ceanothus, spirea and weigela. Summer heather also needs to be cut back lightly after blooming so that some green wood is left to shoot again. Deep pruning of heathers results in old, brown stems that don’t re-grow. Removing seed heads from large rhododendrons is very hard work and really only done in situations and

Brodie Reid heads to Beantown After season with USHL’s Lincoln Stars, 20-year-old Ladner forward will suit up for Northeastern University BY

Brodie Reid will be the first to tell you hockey can be a hit in non-traditional U.S. markets. While the NHL has received lukewarm interest in cities such as Atlanta, Miami and Phoenix, hockey has gone over big in Lincoln, Nebraska. That’s where the 20-year-old from Ladner played his final season at the junior level. In a town noted for being the home of the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers football team, Reid played in a packed building as a member of the U.S. Hockey League’s Lincoln Stars. “Every game was sold out with 5,000 fans,” he said. “For sure college football is huge down there but we were supported big time. It was a great atmosphere to play in and the team was popular around town.” After a couple of productive seasons in the B.C. Hockey League, including a 52-goal campaign with Burnaby in 2007-08, Reid was all set to launch his collegiate career at Northeastern University in Boston. However, the

Huskies were juggling their scholarships and asked the South Delta Minor Hockey product if he could postpone his arrival. Reid could have returned for another season in the BCHL but opted to follow the Huskies’ suggestion and

The Stars finished last in their division with a 1636-8 record. Reid led them in scoring, was named an assistant captain and says the experience has made him a better player. “It was a big step up

He has since been busy back at home preparing for the next step of his career – focusing on his strength and conditioning with Scott Hebert and power skating with Derek Popke. He leaves for Boston this week where he will begin his studies and get a jump on his freshman season. The Huskies are expecting him to contribute immediately and already have him penciled in as a top six forward. “He is a very good offensive player with a great shot and he is proven goal scorer,” said Northeastern assistant coach Albie O’Connell. “He reminds me of a Brett Hull-type player with a big shot and great one-timer.” Reid remains unsure what he will be majoring in and readily admits he hopes his time at Northeastern will lead to a pro contract offer. “I’m really anxious to get there,” he said. “They plan on putting me in a good situation to be productive and get big minutes. It’s going to be a good opportunity and hopefully after two or three seasons I will get the opportunity to play pro somewhere.”

Lawn bowling is commonly thought of in North America as a game for retired people (seniors), and this image discourages participation by younger age groups. In other parts of the world, lawn bowling is recognized and enjoyed

by people of all ages as an excellent summer sports/ social activity. In recent years there has been an effort on the part of some B.C. lawn bowling clubs to get young people interested and involved in the sport. The public is welcome to watch the junior championships, which get going today at 10 a.m. and come to a close at 5 p.m. tomorrow.

Angels reach “A” division of provincial tournament

For the first time in 17 years, Ladner’s Mighty Mite fastpitch team finished in the “A” division of the provincial playoffs. The Ladner Angels, a team of eight- to 10-yearold girls, took part in the tourney last weekend. The girls completed the round robin playdowns with three wins and one loss, placing fifth out of 16 teams heading into the finals.

In the quarter-finals, Ladner met the Richmond Selects, who they had played twice before, both games coming down to nail-biting finishes (with one win each). This was to be the tie-breaking game for the two teams, with only one to advance. The pattern continued as an intense and exciting game remained 2-2 with two out in the bottom of the final inning when

Richmond hit in the winning run for a 3-2 win. Ladner fought hard right through the weekend and the girls finished the tournament with their heads held high. All the players contributed to a great run in the playoffs, so to single out only a few from the tournament would go against the motto, “I play for her,” which is printed on the back of each player’s jersey.

Born December 1917 in Ottawa, Ontario. Al passed away peacefully on Monday, July 5th, 2010 at Delta Hospital. He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy, in 2005. He is survived by his daughter Judy, Grandchildren Christine (Darrin) Halsey, Allan Bisson and Charlene Bisson (Anthony Windsor), Great Grandchildren Britany and Brandon Halsey, his sister Margie (Albert) Cowtan of Trenton, Ontario, and his nieces and nephew. He lived his life to the fullest. He could light up a room with his warm smile and positive outloook. Thank you to his extended family at McKee Seniors Centre and the caring staff at Delta Hospital. We will all miss you! Please join us for a celebration of his life on Saturday, July 10th, at Al’s home. In lieu of flowers, contributions to McKee Seniors Centre or Delta Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.

With profound sorrow we announce the passing of our beloved Lynda Maureen. Lynda is survived by Scott, her loving husband of 43 years, devoted son, Christopher, sister, Leslie and mother, Gladys. She was predeceased by her father, Maurice and sisters, Judy and Sue. She leaves behind a huge number of loving friends and family. Lynda inspired devotion and created beauty wherever she went. She loved to garden, creating spectacular gardens over the years, and to travel the world with Scott and friends. A celebration of her life will be held at the Delta Funeral Home, 5329 Ladner Trunk Road, Delta, on Tuesday, July 13 at 2:00pm. The family wishes to express profound gratitude to Lynda’s medical team and to the wonderful nurses and staff of the Irene Thomas Hospice. It is with heavy hearts we announce that our mother, Margaret Mann Henwood (Marg) passed away on July 6, 2010 at Delta Hospital. Marg is predeceased by her husband Len in 1993, her grandson Tony Rose in 1990, her son-in-law Dr. Bernard Evans in 1999, and her brother Bob Brannan in 1994. Survived by her loving daughters, Melody Evans and Sylvia, and her husband Stan Yacyshyn, as well as her grandchildren, Kimberley Loring, Aron Yacyshyn, Graham Kenmuir and Scott Kenmuir (Katherine). Survived also by her great-grandchildren, Dustin Loring (Ashley), Shaylene Boyarski (Bo), Jaynie McLauchlan (Mike) and Charlie McLauchlan. Also survived by her great-great-granddaughter Emma Grenier. Marg is also survived by her loving older sister, Alice Thom and nephews Jack Thom (Heather) and Ralph Thom, as well as her brother-in-law Bill Henwood and Linda Mervyn (Dave) and Gordon Henwood (Nancy). She will be missed terribly by her “other special daughter”, her niece, Maureen and husband Fred Stallman, as well as great nephew Ross Deboer (Veronica). Special thanks to Joan Ryan, Janice MacDonald and Linda Burt and others too numerous to mention for always keeping in touch with Mom and caring for her. Mom grew up in South Hill area of Vancouver and attended Sir Sandford Fleming Elementary School and John Oliver High School. She met Dad in 1940 and they were married in April of 1941. They lived in South Vancouver and had a summer home in Boundary Bay where they retired in 1967. Mom worked at Woodward’s Vancouver downtown store for 24 years in the Grocery department, where she continued her friendships for many more years. Mom always loved her music, especially Opera, and going to Bingo to see her Bingo buddies. Mom’s greatest joy was always her family and we will miss her so much….. Special thanks to Kimberley for her round the clock loving care of her Grandma. Also special thanks to the nursing staff of Delta Home Support and to Nicole, Cres, Jennifer, Joy and Kim and others as well as social worker, Jennifer at Delta Hospital. No service by request.
