B.C. Hydro is steadily approaching the halfway mark in the sale of homes on the Tsawwassen right-of-way. The Crown corporation has now listed 63 of the 104 homes it owns on the power lines corridor. So far, 45 have been sold or have offers. B.C. Hydro has been marketing the properties since last September. “We are going to have our good and bad cycles. We already had a fantastic fall and we were surprised we sold as many as we did,” said spokesperson Susan

Danard. B.C. Hydro purchased the homes last year from residents that didn’t want to live next to the newly upgraded higher voltage power lines. Planning to re-sell all the houses over a two- to threeyear period, Hydro is marketing them as Tsawwassen Heights. The Crown corporation began selling the homes through RE/ MAX and there had been an initial rush of interest, likely from those thinking they could grab a bargain, although only a few sold over the first few weeks. However, sales have been steadily occurring in subsequent months and the inventory has gone down.

Only about a couple dozen homes are listed at any one time. Danard said there are some misconceptions that Hydro has a huge inventory of listed homes when, in fact, it takes care not to flood the market. The current listings include a “Spanish hacienda” on 53A Street for $529,000 to an “executive” home on Cambridge Court for $689,000. According to the Canadian Real Estate Association, the housing market has begun to cool off after a strong rebound. Danard said B.C. Hydro anticipated ebbs and See HOMES page 3

Tsawwassen Area Plan Review - Update

Message from Mayor Lois E. Jackson & Delta Council The results of the Ipsos Reid Tsawwassen Area Plan Public Opinion Survey have been tabulated and are available on the Corporation of Delta’s website. An extremely successful response rate was achieved with participation from 42% of Tsawwassen households (5,483 valid surveys returned) and 29% of Tsawwassen businesses (106 valid surveys returned). The total number of valid surveys tabulated – 5,589 – exceeded the 5,579 votes cast by Tsawwassen residents in the 2008 Local Government Election. We would like to thank the residents and businesses of Tsawwassen for their active participation in shaping the future of their community. Based on the Ipsos Reid survey results, Council resolved that the Tsawwassen Area Plan Review Committee consider incorporating the following recommendations in the new Tsawwassen Area Plan, for consideration by Mayor and Council, by August 30, 2010:

Survey Results

Question 1: Southlands

• A strong majority (61.4%) of respondents want to see no change to existing land use policies for Southlands, while 37.6% would support some limited development.

Recommendation:

• Retain the current policy and land use designation, as agricultural, for the Southlands.

Question 2: Town Centre Building Height

• A strong majority (60.3%) do not support taller buildings in the town centre, while 21.1% would like to see 5 to 6 storeys and 10.8% 7 to 8 storeys.

Recommendation:

• Retain the current policy regarding a four storey height limit for buildings in the town centre area.

Question 3: Inﬁll Housing

• A majority of respondents (53.8%) do not want to see more single family subdivisions compared with 40.7% who do.

Recommendation:

• Retain the existing policy for single family subdivisions in Tsawwassen.

Question 4: Townhouse and Apartment Development

• A majority of respondents (61.9%) support allowing more townhouses and apartments close to the town centre compared with 34.1% who do not.

Recommendation:

• Develop policies and land use designations, for consideration by Mayor and Council, permitting the development of more townhouses, condominiums and apartments close to the town centre.

Question 5: Housing Height

• There is almost equal support both for (49.2%) and against (43.7%) lowering the maximum height of new houses in Tsawwassen.

Recommendation:

• Develop policies, for consideration by Mayor and Council, regarding building heights for new houses in Tsawwassen.

Next Steps The Tsawwassen Area Plan Review Committee will report the recommendations for the new Tsawwassen Area Plan to Council by August 30, 2010. First and second reading of the new Plan will then follow, along with a full Public Hearing process which is legally required in order to adopt the new plan. Final adoption is scheduled to occur in fall 2010.

Off-leash areas are in the works After much consultation, Delta to establish 13 locations throughout municipality where dogs can roam free BY

Delta dogs will soon have several off-leash areas from which to choose. Civic politicians have approved the establishment of 13 off-leash areas throughout the municipality — four in Ladner, four in Tsawwassen and five in North Delta. Four of the new off-leash areas — two in North Delta and one each in Ladner and Tsawwassen — will be fenced compounds, while the other nine will be marked with signs. All will include garbage cans and waste bag dispensers. Delta council approved spending $33,000 to establish the off-leach areas. Another $70,000 for fencing will be considered for the 2011 budget. Ken Kuntz, Delta’s director of parks, recreation and

culture, said the municipality and the parks and recreation commission looked at what other municipalities have done. “We certainly heard the same story from every single municipality we talked to and we talked to over 30 different municipalities, and that was simply that there was a great deal of apprehension in moving forward with any solution and it really divided the community,” he said. “But regardless of the solution, or the application applied, the problems really didn’t materialize and everyone got on with the business of having some off-leash areas or some controlled areas and life was pretty good.” Kuntz said in looking at Delta’s park usage by dog owners and bylaw complaints, there does not appear to be a problem. He

Police give chase to suspect by land, air and water BY

What started out as a fairly routine call for a possible break and enter turned into a police chase by air, water and land, and ended in the arrest of a man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant. Delta police received the call just before 11 a.m. Tuesday. An employee at Sonship Marine in the 8200-block of River Road

had disrupted a suspect as he was attempting to steal property from a 58-foot yacht. The suspect pushed past the employee and leapt into an inflatable boat he had been using to traverse the Fraser River. “The employee tried to stop (the suspect) by grabbing the boat’s docking line and tying it to the yacht but he produced a knife and cut the line freeing his craft,” said Delta police A/Sgt.

two officers happened to be at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans office in Steveston. DFO officers volunteered to help out and immediately launched a boat. Air 2 followed the suspect to Westham Island west of Ladner where he beached the stolen boat and took off running into the trees. Brassington made the decision to land the helicopter and pursue the sus-

pect on foot. He followed him into the trees and made the arrest. It was a first for Brassington, who noted that in his four-and-a-half years as a tactical flight officer, it’s always been the police on the ground that make the arrest. Michael Bentzen, 43, of Qualicum Beach, was arrested for mischief and held in custody on a Canada-wide warrant for breach of parole.

Tsawwassen Heights was featured in an article in a recent edition of the Real Estate Weekly, which praised the attributes of the neighbourhood, including the proximity to retail outlets and other amenities. The article stated that

thanks to the Re/Max sales team of Jake Moldowan, Barry Chreptyk and Aileen Noguer, the homes wouldn’t be for sale for long. Chreptyk is quoted as saying buyers have been very enthusiastic and can’t believe the size of some of

the park-like back yards. Noguer predicted about 60 per cent of all homes along the power lines will be occupied this summer. B.C. Hydro is offering an added incentive of rebates for energy retrofits starting at $3,500. Several homes

have already been upgraded to save, according to B.C. Hydro, an average of $750 per year on utility bills. B.C. Hydro estimates the cost of the buy-out, once all the homes are resold and expenses tallied, will be about $23 million.

Kids First aims to raise final $850,000 for new gym BY

Delta Gymnastics officially launched a campaign this week to help in the final fundraising push for its new home.

On Tuesday night the organization unveiled the Kids First Campaign. The group is aiming to raise the last $850,000 needed for the Delta Sport Development Centre — $400,000 to cover the last

bit of construction costs and $450,000 to outfit the club’s new home with all the necessary equipment and office supplies. The building, which will include a 15,500-squarefoot gym, large lobby and

all the amenities the club requires, will be located immediately north of the Ladner Leisure Centre. Construction is already underway and is scheduled to be completed by next March.

Last December, Delta Gymnastics received a $753,000 Recreation Infrastructure Canada Program grant towards the expansion of its current home at the South Delta Recreation Centre. Shortly

after being approved for the funding, the Corporation of Delta proposed a new facility in Ladner. The project also received $938,500 from Delta and $753,000 from the federal government.

gram will be available at a certain number of schools for children considered “atrisk.” Beginning in September 2011, the all-day program will be available to all Delta children entering kindergarten. There are about 1,000 kids in kindergarten in Delta. Full-day kindergarten is currently only available to 200 ESL students that qualify for extra government funding. Those students are spread across 14 classes in the district. An additional 450 students will qualify for the full-day program this September and the remainder next year. In South Delta, the program will be available this fall at Hawthorne, Holly, Ladner and South Park elementary schools.

Dale Saip told the Optimist an analysis was done of the district’s available space and requirements for all-day kindergarten. “We’ve been prepared for that when they first announced it. We don’t have any capacity issues and are fine to support the system,” he said. “Our facilities review and boundaries review put us in good shape. There may be a little blip here or there, but for the most part our capacity is fine.” There had been some discussion as to whether there would be enough space at some schools when the program is fully implemented next year, including the possibility of bringing in portables for students in the higher grades so extra space would be available for kindergarten. New school rankings favourable to Delta

Most South Delta elementary schools performed better than expected, according to a provincewide ranking of schools that takes a different approach than the controversial Fraser Institute rankings. The C.D. Howe Institute released a study last month that looked at how schools performed on the annual Foundation Skills Assessment exams over a three-year period, but calculated other variables as well. The C.D. Howe Institute came out with a similar study two years ago, which also cast a more favourable light on Delta schools compared to the Fraser Institute’s annual report. Unlike the Fraser Institute, whose annual rankings are based primarily on FSA results, the C.D. Howe Institute report — British Columbia’s Best Schools: Where Teachers Make the Difference — compares outcomes based on students from similar socio-economic backgrounds. “This ‘apples-to-apples’ comparison reveals ‘good’ schools where principals, teachers and staff are making a positive difference in student performance,” according to C.D. Howe. The study comes up with a predicted success rate for a school, based on the socio-economic characteristics of the student population, and from that calculates a final percentile rating, based on how well a school scored compared to the predicted rate. A percentile of 50 goes to schools that scored exactly as predicted based

on the variables. A score of 90 indicates the school offers more “value added” than 90 per cent of other schools with similar socioeconomic characteristics. The study’s author, professor David Johnson of Wilfrid Laurier University, explained he constructed relative school performance indicators that are more representative of a school’s actual effectiveness than rankings based on raw annual results. He said his analysis, to a very large degree, solves the problem of using FSA results as a fair comparison between schools, both public and private. “Schools with high percentile rankings merit praise and, potentially, emulation by their lower performing counterparts,” he noted in his report. According to the study, Neilson Grove Elementary scored the best percentile (96) in the Grade 4 category in South Delta, while Hawthorne rated the best for Grade 7 (86). Delta board of education chair Dale Saip said the study seems like a much better measuring tool on how local schools are doing. “We think we’re doing a good job with our kids and we’re, overall, looked at from a ministry (of education) perspective as a very good school district. Our graduation rates are constantly rated in the top three in the region, so this supports what we already know is going on,” he said. Coun. She said what’s helped the district is a much better working relationship with the municipality, which includes the school board/ council liaison committee. “It’s also indicative of the results as well. It’s very hard for the school board to do everything all by themselves,” she said. “Partnerships, I’ve always said, are a key to success.”

The incident was witnessed by the off-duty manager and was recorded on video surveillance. One of the two males also stole approximately $500 worth of liquor last week. The thefts are still under investigation. • June 26, 12:41 p.m., 200-block of 54A Street: Complainant reported that sometime overnight a thief had entered his unlocked vehicle and stolen a Milo GPS unit and power cord valued at $300. Ladner • June 22, 4:02 a.m., Ladner Trunk Road and 54A Street: A driver reported that a male was stumbling and yelling on the road and had thrown something hard at his vehicle, causing paint to chip off the bumper. Police located the suspect and arrested him for being intoxicated in a public place. The suspect was transported to police head-

quarters, held in custody until he was able to care for himself and then released on a promise to appear in court at a future date. • June 22, 3:24 a.m., 5300-block of 64th Street: Complainant reported she received a phone call from a male who identified himself as her grandson. He said he was being held in jail in Montreal and needed

$1,800 for bail and fines. The complainant sent the funds by Western Union and later discovered her grandson was at home in Langley. Western Union was immediately contacted but the funds had already been dispersed. • June 23, 5:35 a.m., 5300-block of Crescent Drive: Complainant reported hearing glass breaking. When she investigated she saw a several youths leaving the area and found a vehicle with a smashed mirror. Police investigated and found the youths in the area and one of the youths was identified as the culprit. The suspect was arrested for mischief and then released to the custody of his father with a promise to appear in court at a future date. • June 26, 7:29 p.m., 4900-block of Chisholm

Street: Police responded to a report of a fight at the pub. On arrival police found the fight had broken up but located the two males that were involved. It was determined the fight was consensual and no charges were laid, however both subjects were warned they could have been charged with causing a disturbance. • June 26, 10:37 p.m., 5000-block of 47th Avenue: A report was received that a male and two females were in the back ally with what appeared to be a black gun. The youths were pointing the alleged gun at each other and talking about it. Police converged on the area but could not locate the suspects. The suspects were described as being approximately 15 years of age. The male was wearing a black T-shirt and has light brown hair. The females have dark hair with ponytails. • June 27, 10:05 a.m., 4800-block of Coleman Place: Complainant reported that sometime during the early hours of the morning the car parked in the driveway had been flipped onto the passenger side. Police found the vehicle with a broken window, damage to the side and fluid leaking out of the transmission. Complainant indicated the registered owner of the vehicle is out of town.

My Mom & Dad along with another couple at their ripe ages of 26 and 27, bought the 10 acres of bare land on the corner of 28th Avenue in 1981, at a prime interest rate of 18%! They developed it into Micaela, Lexy and donkey Tink-O-Layo. 2 houses and a horse boarding facility, which they named Loranda Farms, after my mother’s name Lorraine and her first born, Amanda. All animals loved my mom, and she loved them, so in 1992 she decided to start up a cat boarding facility, which she truly enjoyed and named Loranda’s Kitty Kottage. She made it her own style, cottage-like and very cozy with scratching posts, music and antiques everywhere-her favorite. Cats love to stay here, if it wasn’t the tuna that did it, it was the constant attention & love, which we like to call home away from home. Because it felt like more of a hobby to her, she always believed in keeping the rates low, and living on the premises allows for the hours to be extremely flexible, whether it be last minute bookings or late night cat drop offs or pickups. For many years the second house on the property has been rented out, by the bedroom, for low income renters, with some people coming and going, but that house is always Indoor arena. like a family in its own, with its separate bedrooms, but shared kitchen. By 2003, after half the farm was passed through a few hands, it was completely owned and operated by my Mom. This farm was truly my Mom’s dream come true, and she always fought hard to keep this farm going for her children, she did it all for us. Sadly, she passed away from Cancer in June of 2006 leaving the farm to her 3 children, my older sister Amanda, myself and my younger brother Lucas. By 2008, myself and my brother, all happily agreeing, bought my sister out of the farm. Since 2008, we have completed many renovations in both houses, around the barn and on the property, with many more to come! Right now our barn is comfortably full with over 30 great horses, great staff and friendly horse owners of all ages! We boast large grass pastures, paddock stalls, a good sized indoor arena, very large outdoor and a round pen. With our best feature being located on the end of a newly dead end road and only a 5 minute horse ride down that road to ride your horse right on the sandy beach in Tsawwassen! There is no view like on the back of your horse with the sand underneath, the ocean in front and the sunset ahead!! This farm is non-stop work, with not a boring minute passing, and with my Dad Stu & his lovely wife Crenia just moving back to the coast and coming to live here has been a great help, there is nothing like a hard-working, loving Dad like mine! With them being here it really helps me juggle my job as an Executive Assistant at a Mining company, running this establishment and raising my daughter. It all makes sense to me now, just like my mom, I do it for my daughter Lexy. After a year of searching, today we got Lexy a horse of her own from a rescue farm in Langley, she is very skinny and needs a lot of love & care, but we will fix her up, Lexy named her Rainbow. We are supporters of the Delta Autism Program and enjoy being of assistance to their cause. Between the brackets how we are raised — Chapter 22: 6 says, begin instruction early, and it will stick with us. We also learn from Jesus in Matthew’s Gospel that, rather than worry about day-to-day necessities, we should “seek first the kingdom of God” (6:33). The most important lesson, however, is given, and then demonstrated, by Jesus, “the greatest love is shown, when people lay down their lives for their friends” (John 15:13). We are not called to do this literally, although many have done so, but rather to think of the needs of others. Finally, we are told in Ecclesiastes 3: 2 there is a time to be born and a time to die. We cannot escape it — but what lies between the brackets of our lives?

Within the space of five days I have attended a shower for a new baby and a funeral for an elderly friend. Two events, which are like brackets around life. Life goes on prior to our birth, and continues on after we die. It is that piece in the middle that is so critical. What do we know about it? In Genesis 1:26 we are told we are made by God in the image of God. Psalm 139: 13 expands upon this theme when we hear how it was done, and that we are “fearfully and wonderfully made.” In the Gospels we are told that Jesus has a special place for children, and that their child-like faith is something from which we can all learn (Luke 18:16). he seventh annual South Delta Jazz Festival has a busy lineup in store for local music fans as it features eight shows over five days next week. “It’s exciting,” says cofounder and organizer Jared Burrows, noting performers will include familiar faces as well as musicians who are returning to the festival after missing a few years. Saxophonist Len Aruliah, who is a longtime friend of Burrows, has made the trip from London to take part in the festival, which also includes a workshop for jazz students. “It’s an amazing opportunity to spend a couple days making music and being immersed in music,” says Aruliah, whose quartet will play twice next week, including a Friday night

show at All Saints Anglican Church in Ladner. Tickets cost $10 for that performance while the rest of the lineup is either admission by donation or free. “We’re trying to make it as accessible to the public as we can manage,” Burrows says. Students taking part in the workshop will also get a few chances to perform during the event. Aruliah, who teaches music at a college in southeast London, was a regular attendee of the festival, appearing from 2005 to 2008 before taking a break last year. “I’m quite happy to be back,” he says. During the Olympics this year Burrows, a guitarist, visited Aruliah in London and got to play a few shows during his trip. “We worked on some new music for the London performances and he’ll be presenting some of that here,” Burrows says. The pair became friends

while they were both involved with a Capilano College big band. Born in the U.K., Aruliah came to Vancouver at the age of seven and stayed for almost 20 years before returning about a decade ago. He has a music degree from UBC and has also studied at the Banff Jazz Workshop. His quartet consists of Burrows, bassist Rob Kohler and drummer Stan Taylor. Trumpet player Alan Matheson is also returning to the festival this year. He’ll play a show next Friday at the Ladner Community Centre. A Northwestern University grad, Matheson has directed the CBC Jazz Orchestra, has played at the Vancouver, Montreal and Paris jazz festivals and toured Sweden and Finland with the Helsinki City Jazz Orchestra. Well on Your Way I get asked a lot of fitness questions, no matter where I am. For instance, I have been asked what the best abdominal exercise is by the customs officer while headed to Hawaii. While lined up at Thrifty Foods, I have been queried as to what the best cardio workout is, while browsing for produce at Kin’s what my opinion is of the Bow Flex machine, and while my dog and I were taking my loving husband for a walk, I was once asked how can one get rid of their “muffin tops” by a passer-by. I don’t mind being asked all these questions, though. I want people to be empowered. I want them to be armed with the correct information about how to reach their fitness goals, and I want them to train smarter, not harder. Below are five of most common questions, or myths, that I find myself repeating over and over. These fitness blunders can make reaching your potential very hard, and in some cases impossible. So, please do not fall into a trap with these “old” school ways of thinking and training, and instead, embrace a new way of training that will have you looking the best you have ever looked.

Crunches will give me a six-pack Unfortunately we cannot spot train. So, no matter how many hundreds of crunches you perform, they will not decrease the fat from your mid-section. The only way to really melt that abdominal fat is by eating a clean diet and performing cardio with lots of hard intervals. Once you have addressed these two points then I suggest planks and side planks as your abdominal exercise of choice. Crunches, as an exercise in general, are actually pretty useless. They do not train your body in a functional capacity. Instead, they train you to use your superficial abdominals to simply roll your shoulders up and off the floor (which we really only do once a day when we roll out of bed). Planks, on the other hand, train the superficial and deep core muscles to be strong in a lengthened position, which is how we tend to operate when walking around in the real world. Resting between sets Less rest time in between your sets of exercises at the gym can increase the amount of testosterone your body is producing. If you are a guy looking to gain more muscle mass, testosterone is your number one hormone for muscle building. As for the ladies looking to burn fat, resting in between your sets will lower your heart rate which in turn will decrease your calorie burn for that work-

out. Fewer calories burned equals less fat blasted. I recommend super setting your movements with no rest in between. One of my favourite training techniques is to super set a chest exercise, followed by a leg exercise, to a back exercise and finish off with a core exercise. Once I have completed each exercise, with no rest in between, I go back and do it all over again. Stretching between exercises For up to 15 minutes following a static stretch, your muscles and tendons stay stretched and are temporarily weakened. This is not state you want to leave your muscles in when performing strength programs or sports programs. Instead, leave the stretching for after your workout to ensure you have peak power and performance during your exercises. Curling for bigger pipes If there is one thing that I hate more (other than Will Ferrell movies) it is training one muscle in an isolated fashion. Take for example the bicep. There are absolutely no practical applications to doing an exercise like a bicep curl. For one thing, why train a muscle the size of an orange (or in some people’s cases a grape) in an isolated fashion? When are you ever going to just use your bicep muscle in real life? Never. When picking up items, or playing sport, you will also engage the forearm

extensors and flexors, the shoulders and their stabilizers, perhaps even the triceps, oh and don’t forget the core also fires up with any movement of our limbs. I suggest instead of doing bicep curls perform rows and pull downs that will work your bicep muscles as well as the muscles surrounding them. In my studio if you want bigger pipes you must first push and pull your own body weight for the beginning of the session and then I will let you work the pipes with some curls. But, foremost it’s always function over aesthetics. Running for weight loss I know I am going to tick off a lot of runners with this statement, but running is not the best choice for weight loss. Let me explain before you start emailing me hate mail. Yes, running is a fantastic aerobic workout and is also one of

the most convenient workouts to perform. I run on a regular basis and recommend my clients to do the same. However, if they are looking to lose weight, I do not recommend steadystate running. This means running at the same pace, on the same terrain, every workout. You need intervals of either speed or hills to see a metabolic increase to really effectively burn the fat. Yes, going for a jog will burn calories, but by adding one minute sprints throughout you will double your calorie burn and increase your calorie burning long after the workout has ended. Another fantastic fatburner is weight training. All of my weight loss clients lift weights two to three times a week. P.J. Stock continues to soar for Ladner pitcher

Tom Robson has pitched three times in Florida during the past eight months, twice as a member of Canada’s national junior team and more recently as an invited prospect for the prestigous Perfect Game scouting services National Showcase at Tropicana Field. The Delta secondary student pitched two perfect innings, striking out three. It was enough to get the attention of at least 10 NCAA Division One programs who contacted his coach in Langley. Robson leaves this weekend for a three week tour with the national junior team which he hopes culminates with pitching for Canada at the World Junior Championships in Thunder Bay.

through three significant camps and series of games — the Fall Instructional League (Orlando), Spring Training (Orlando) and the Dominican Republic Summer League. Now, he leaves this weekend for the final three-week stint that will begin in Toronto and include games in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Minnesota. Five additional cuts will then be made for the World tourney which runs from July 23 to Aug. 1. Robson is among eight underage players looking to earn a spot on the 20man roster and given how he thrives in the limelight, it should only enhance his chances. “I like the pressure,” admitted Robson who celebrated his 17th birthday

last Sunday. “It’s the certain feeling I get when I am pitching. I like it when people expect you to do things and you have got to live up up to what you are capable of doing. “You need to get yourself ready and get into your zone. People don’t do that for you. Baseball is such a mental game.” Robson has been a force on the mound ever since he got his first opportunity to pitch in Ladner Minor Baseball’s Mosquito Division. He learned his pitching mechanics working with Brent Crowther at the Dugout practice facility in Surrey where he still goes for the odd visit. As a first-year Bantam player, he pitched for the Ladner Nationals all-star

team and helped them place second at the Canadian Championships that year. He jumped immediately to the B.C. Premier Baseball League, pitching the past two seasons for Fraser Valley and Vancouver. He then joined the Blaze and has been dominant in his limited time with the club. Robson’s last outing on June 22 saw him allow one hit and strikeout 10 in a 5-0 win over North Shore. He remains on a strict 80 pitch count and regularly see sa personal trainer which has helped him avoid arm problems as he continues to grow. “There’s exercises and a strict warm-up before I even throw,” said Robson whose repertoire of pitches includes a slider and an

ever-improving changeup. “My personal trainer put together (an off-season) program to build up my strength, then a maintenance program for during the season. They have really helped me.” His biggest challenge in the past couple weeks hasn’t been striking batters but rather writing provincial exams, especially after missing lengthy stints of school to be with the National Team Junior Team. He did plenty of study on the road and fortunately has the support of the DSS staff. Robson has enjoyed the precious past few days being a typical Ladner teen before he heads east and steps back into the baseball spotlight where he destined to shine again.

For the third time in less than a year, Tom Robson travelled to the Sunshine State last week where he further increased his stock as one of the best prospects in North America. The 6foot-4 right-handed pitcher was the lone Canadian invited to participate in the prestigious Perfect Game scouting services’ 2010 National Showcase at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg. The event featured the top 2011 graduating high school players in North America. In a two inning appearance, the Delta secondary student solidified his status as the No. 1 ranked high school player in Canada by not surrendering hit and striking out three. His fastball was also clocked at a career best 93-mph. It was a performance that resulted in at least 10 NCAA Division One programs contacting his coach in the B.C. Premier Baseball League over a 48 hour period. However, Robson’s options could go well beyond what school should he attend. He also will be eligible for the 2011 Major League Draft and could immediately turn pro should he be selected high enough to warrant a significant signing bonus. His Langley Blaze battery mate — catcher Kellin Deglan — went that route. The awards keep rolling in for Tsawwassen’s Maurice Hamlin. The longtime minor hockey volunteer was at B.C. Amateur Hockey Association’s annual general meeting in Prince George last weekend where he received the Ernie Gare Award as the province’s coach-of-the-year. The recognition comes on the heels of a similar honour weeks earlier with the Pacific Coast Amateur Hockey Association. After a lengthy run coaching numerous teams

with South Delta Minor Hockey, Hamlin shifted over to Richmond Minor where he has been a fixture with the organization’s juvenile program. During his impressive tenure, Hamlin’s teams have advanced to the provincial championships six of the past seven years and brought home a B.C. banner this past spring after an unbeaten tournament run. Hamlin’s success comes from more than just his chalkboard strategy. He is praised with how he

treats his players in what is considered a challenging age group, using his strong communication skills to gain respect from each and every one of them. Hamlin always stresses discipline and constantly reminds his players to avoid taking ‘stupid penalties.’ His love for the game of hockey and what he does will keep him involved for the foreseeable future.

As the World Cup winds down in South Africa, South Delta kids will get a chance to play in their own version when Tsawwassen hosts an Athletes in Action Soccer Camp, July 5-9. In addition to an exciting World Cup tournament, campers will enjoy a week of skill development and fun competitions like ‘Soccer Olympics’ — all while receiving quality teaching and individual coaching from AIA university and club players. Each camper will receive the personal coaching they require, all in a safe, comfortable team-building atmosphere. Besides developing their soccer skills, kids will gain confidence, build self-

esteem and kick off the summer with a week of fun. The camp, sponsored by Tsawwassen Alliance Church, is for kids ages seven to 12 and is designed for all skill levels. The sessions will take place at Brandrith Park and run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration is $110 (with family rates also available) which includes daily snacks, and a AIA soccer shirt. Cubs complete surprising run to Bantam playoff title The Ladner Cubs had the last laugh in their surprising run to the Bantam “A” baseball playoff championship. The Cubs struggled through the regular season, compiling a 6-10 record in a league that featured teams from Tsawwassen, Burnaby, Richmond, Vancouver, Gibsons and Sechelt. Their final regular season contest saw them get drubbed 12-1 in Sechelt. The boys on the team had jokingly renamed themselves the ‘Bad News Bears.’ In an all-Ladner battle, the Cubs opened the playoffs with a 6-4 win over the Phillies. As a reward for their success, the Cubs earned the right to play the Tsawwassen

Black Sox which had not lost a game all season. With a relaxed attitude, a hot bat from Mike Thompson and solid defense, the Cubs jumped out to a surprising lead. The Black Sox rallied in the bottom of the seventh to come within two runs, but could get no closer in a 9-7 Ladner win. The semi-final featured another rivalry game against the Ladner Mariners. The Cubs defence bent but didn’t break as the Mariners stranded 14 baserunners. A 6-3 victory set the stage for the championship game against the same Sechelt team that had produced the lopsided win just days earlier. With a depleted pitching staff, the Cubs handed the ball to Kyle

Obituaries

MAY - Frederick Duncan May (Born April 4, 1923) passed away peacefully on June 22, 2010 surrounded by his family. Duncan was a pioneer farmer who lived his entire life on his farm in East Richmond, where he was born. He grew up growing potatoes, strawberries, cranberries and milking cows. Right up until his last days he loved to feed his calves, host the neighbourhood in the coffee room, work the fields on the tractor and watched his boys farm all around him. Duncan was predeceased by his loving wife Pat the mother of his five boys, Randy (Joy), Ron (Lila) Hap (Bev) Dave (Kim) and Glen (Sherry). Papa Duncan was also a spectacular example of strength and love for his 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Also predeceased by his loving wife Faye Quo Vadis and her four children, spouses and seven grandchildren. Duncan was a loving husband to his wife Violet Koch, who he leaves behind and her four children, spouses and eight grandchildren. Duncan also leaves behind his siblings Norman (Rose) John (Doreen) and Rosemary and many loving nieces and nephews. Duncan will be honoured by having a Celebration of Life at the farm in the field by his home at 14551 Cambie Road on July 14 from 2:00 to 4:00. In lieu of flowers, a donation to your choice of charity. A special Thank you to Salvation Army Rotary Hospice and the Nurses Next Door who took such wonderful care of him . The true measure of a person is how many people he has touched, Duncan will be truly missed.

BERRY, Sidney Douglas (Doug) Sept 30, 1926 - June 30, 2010

Memorial Service To Be Announced It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of a very special man, Doug Berry. He is survived by his wife Helen (Hartwig), son Kenneth (Julia), granddaughter Kate deWynter (Brett), grandson Geoff (Pamela) and his pride and joy; eight great grandchildren: Carysa, Harmony, Jacob, Anna, Eric, Nathan, David, & Tayha. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who were a very important part of his days and weeks. Doug was smitten early in his teens by the Pantages Theatre Head Usherette (Helen) and made sure he got the job as Head Doorman to be near her. This must have worked as they just celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on June 17, 2010. In 1945 Doug was a private in the Canadian army during the “Battle of Chilliwack” as a trainee. Young SPACE enough to be drafted but lucky enough to see the war end before BOOKING being shipped out. He joined Canadian Pacific Cable as a “cable For: DELTA boy” and also worked FUNERAL as a Cable Director HOME for CN/CP Telecommunications Rep: and ultimately Teleglobe Canada where he DTJames serviced customers asAd#: a Traffic1250681 Representative on “the state of the art “ telex system (the world wide web of the 50’s & 60’s & 70’s). Over the years Doug has been characterized as “the best”: husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, friend and sidekick by his many friends and family. He loved volunteering at the Delta Thrift Store, every Thursday, for 25+ years. It was the highlight of his week! The only thing that could top Thursdays was seeing a “White Cadillac that was on for a steal”. His family heard this line and saw the results 5 or 6 times in the past 20 years. Besides buying Cadillacs, he loved to travel to the Cariboo to visit his family to help with log cabin building or log home renovations and usually outfished the rest of the family when he was there. His passion for gathering firewood on the Fraser River was unsurpassed. His woodpile was sized to length, species, and date and could always be counted on for a story on how and where he found that “beautiful piece of wood”. For the past four years Doug daily visited “his sweety”, Helen, in care to feed her lunch and make sure she was in good hands and good spirits. Helen, his family and friends, were his life and he enjoyed them to the fullest. He was always finding or fixing watches for the staff of whatever facility he was visiting. Doug never saw a buffet he didn’t like! The Berry family would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to the staff at Waterford Care Home, Mountainview Manor Care Home, Molly Maid, Lifeline and his many cousins and friends that took Doug into their hearts, under their wing, and allowed him to live an independent life right up to the very end. Our deep appreciation goes to Drs. Henderson and Rogerson for their ongoing care and concern over the years. Thank you, also to the staff of Delta Hospital Emergency who made Doug and his family’s last few days together comfortable, painless, and sometimes comical. Doug was finding it difficult to get to Helen daily but did not confide in that until he was hospitalized. He will leave a huge hole in the hearts of his family and in the minds of those who knew him in the Ladner & Delta area. We are so very proud of you Dad. You didn’t want to be special, you just wanted to help anyone and everyone you could and because of that you are, and will remain, a very gentle and very special man. You are loved by so many.
