Diamond found during renovations makes its way back to home’s previous occupants BY

Jennifer Tilbury’s search for the owner of a wedding ring she found has come to a close. She returned the diamond ring to Bruce and Nicola White, the previous owners of Tilbury’s Tsawwassen home, on Thursday. “I kept hitting dead ends so it was nice to finally get a conclusion and a happy result out of it,” she said. Tilbury discovered the ring in late April behind a set of built-in shelves as she was renovating a bathroom.

Bruce White has no idea how it ended up there and noted the piece of jewelry had been missing for over 10 years. “It was out of sight, out of mind for all these years. [We] always wondered where it went but never gave it any more thought than that. I think it’s just wonderful that there’s honest people in the world,” he said. The ring was White’s mother’s wedding ring and it was passed down to him after his mom passed away in 1996.

The Whites, who still live in Tsawwassen, weren’t the original owners of the house but had lived there since the mid 1980s and only moved out last year as part of the B.C. Hydro right-of-way buy out program. After finding the ring Tilbury began trying to get in touch with the Whites so she could return it. She had their names since mail intended for them was still being delivered to the house. Tilbury searched online, talked to neigh-

bours and tried the post office in attempts to find contact information. “I’ve had things that I’ve lost returned to me and I remember the feeling of being overwhelmed and happy, so I wanted to do that for somebody else,” she said. Tilbury eventually contacted the Optimist and the Whites got calls about the ring after a story ran earlier this week. Her husband Dean said he was surprised other media also picked up the story. “We never thought it would go on the front page of the Optimist either,” he said.

Berner’s fate put in judge’s hands After four weeks of testimony, those involved in high-profile trial will have to wait another month for judgment BY

Carol Berner will have to wait another month before learning her fate. Berner is charged with impaired driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm, dangerous driving causing death and dangerous driving causing bodily harm in the 2008 crash that killed fouryear-old Alexa Middelaer and seriously injured her aunt Daphne Johanson. After four weeks of testimony and legal arguments, the trial wrapped up Thursday afternoon in Surrey Provincial Court with closing arguments from both sides. On May 17, 2008, Alexa and Johanson were feeding a horse in the 4300-block of 64th Street in East Ladner when a car plowed into them. The little girl was fatally wounded and died later at B.C. Children’s Hospital. Johanson was seriously injured and spent four weeks in hospital. Berner, 58, has pleaded not guilty to the charges but did admit through her lawyer she was driving the car at the time of the collision. Outside the courthouse, Alexa’s parents, Laurel and Michael Middelaer, said there is little relief as the trial winds down. “I feel like we’re in the first mile of a marathon,” Michael Middelaer said, noting that even if there is a conviction there is still a

Municipal politicians look to add land to Burns Bog covenant before seeking Ramsar designation

Delta council members and Corporation of Delta staff had concerns over a Community Comment column published in the June 9 edition of the Optimist. Specifically, they took objection to the contention the municipality is standing in the way of a Ramsar designation application for Burns Bog. Municipal officials say they are committed to ensuring the bog obtains the highest possible protective designation. Metro Vancouver recently granted a request by Delta to hold off on the Ramsar application as the municipality is attempting to add 435 hectares

(1,074 acres) to the more than 2,000 hectares (5,000 acres) of Burns Bog that are already part of the conservation covenant. Civic officials recently met with federal counterparts in Ottawa to discuss the inclusion of the additional acreage. Delta supports submitting a Ramsar application after the additional properties have been included in the covenant. The Optimist, which apologizes to Mayor Lois Jackson, Coun. Scott Hamilton, Delta council members and Corporation of Delta staff, is dedicated to setting the record straight.

moments before the collision. Crown prosecutor Winston Sayson characterized Berner as a “seasoned drinker,” which, he said, would explain the lack out outward signs of impairment. The breath samples the accused provided at police headquarters about three hours after the crash of .06 and .04 also prove she was

impaired, he said, if only slightly. However, Berner also repeatedly told that officer, and others at the scene of the crash, that she had suddenly lost control of her car. According to testimony, she said on more than one occasion the car had suddenly started swerving across the road after she went over the speed bumps and she could not make it stop.

A collision expert told the court Berner had been driving an estimated 91 km/h in the seconds before impact and may have pushed the gas pedal instead of the brake when her car started swerving out of control. Professional engineer Steve MacInnis testified that in the seconds before impact the throttle of Berner’s car was at 100 per cent, which would mean the

gas pedal is pushed all the way to the floor and there was no attempt to engage the brakes until one second before the crash. During the trial, defence lawyer David Tarnow pointed out there had been a recall notice issued for steering and braking defects on the 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue. A mechanic who inspected the car for Delta police testified he did not see any problems with the steering or the braking systems when he inspected the car. In his closing submissions Thursday, Tarnow argued there is no way to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Berner’s car had not experienced some kind of mechanical failure. He stated the defence had not been given an opportunity to fully investigate this possibility because the car was sold for scrap in late 2008. “Would it have made a difference? Would it have shown the ABS modulator failed?” Tarnow asked. “We’ll never know. We’ll never know because the car was not preserved.” He also argued that several Crown witnesses that were at the scene that day and had interactions with Berner did not note any outward signs of impairment. Tarnow asked for acquittal on all four counts. Judge Peder Gulbransen will deliver his judgment July 27.

Legion expands reach in ongoing evolution Still aiding veterans and supporting charities, but Tsawwassen branch is also a place for entertainment Past president Lloyd Jones provided some stirring words to remind everyone of the huge sacrifice Canadian troops made to help free European countries. The Tsawwassen Legion will donate almost $30,000 to numerous causes this year that benefit the local area. One of the major benefactors is the Delta Hospital Foundation, which has made Legion 289 a gold medal sponsor. Another benefactor is the George Derby Centre. Founded in 1946 through the efforts of First World War veteran George Cleveland Derby, the centre was built as a rehabilitation site for disabled veterans. In 1988, a new facility with 300 intermediate care beds

was opened. Most people are aware of the Legion’s annual Poppy Fund Campaign run in the fall just before Remembrance Day. While a portion of this money goes to support the national organization, the majority is returned to the community. The same holds true for the small gaming revenue raised by the branch. Membership fees are nominal and provide some revenue to meet operating costs. It costs $40 to join the Legion, with another $10 to provide a private access card, lapel pin and membership card. Members can sponsor up to four guests for events. The Tsawwassen Legion is currently at about 50 per cent of its long-term mem-

bership objective. To help ensure the sustainability of the Legion, recent efforts have been focused on events that both serve the members and contribute towards operating income. Funds are being raised through in-house events such as dances with artists like Jerry Doucette, Incognito, Sibel Thrasher, South Side Vibe, The Centaurs, Madison Blues Band, the Ryder Trio, Rude City Riot and Delta 88, to name a few. Karaoke on Thursdays, pool and dart leagues on Mondays, blues jams on Sundays, Wednesday card nights and weekend meat draws are other activities that offer entertainment and contribute to the non-profit society. Some of the activities being planned for later this year include a public celebration of the 65th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. The Aug. 14 event will include live entertainment, family games (1940s vintage), a barbecue, and stories and

posters from the era. The Legion will also be participating in the annual Tsawwassen Sun Festival parade and has a golf tournament planned for July 18 at the Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club. The branch is also considering creating a building fund to renovate the facilities and encourage broader participation in the many activities it offers. Ham radio operators show stuff during Field Day this weekend The Delta Amateur Radio Society will join thousands of amateur radio operators across North America to show off their emergency capabilities this weekend. Over the past year, the news has been full of reports of ham radio operators providing critical communications during unexpected emergencies around the world, including earthquakes, winter storms, tornadoes, wildfires and other events. The public will have a chance to meet and talk with Delta’s ham radio operators this weekend and see for themselves what the service is about. June 20 to 26 has been proclaimed Legion Week by the provincial government, providing an opportunity for Legionnaires and members of the Ladies Auxiliary to make the community aware of the diverse and significant charitable work the Legion performs. The Tsawwassen Legion, which is overseen by president Bob Wilkinson and a 12-member executive, has been busy in 2010 through hosting events, raising money and supporting veterans. Earlier this month, in remembrance of D-Day, the Legion colour party joined veterans, families and some local dignitaries, including MLA Vicki Huntington, for an emotional but enjoyable luncheon at KinVillage.

Delta to install median on stretch of 53A St. JESSICA KERR

After consulting with homeowners in the area, Delta is moving ahead with proposed safety measures for one stretch of road in Tsawwassen. On Monday night, civic politicians approved the installation of a centre median in the 900-block of 53A Street. Earlier this year, municipal staff sent out a survey to homeowners seeking support for the move. Of the 11 surveys sent out, 10 were returned to municipal hall, with 20 per cent in support, 60 per cent neutral and 20 per cent opposed. Council had asked staff to look at the issue of speeding cars and crashes

Some measures were taken in 2008 — including reflective pavement markers and a sign to warn drivers of the curve in the road — but civic staff said the most recent crash highlighted the need for further safety improvements. In order to reduce speeding along that stretch of road, which is half a block from South Delta Secondary and close to KinVillage, engineering staff recommended the installation of the centre median. The new safety measure will cost $50,000.

Transformer lands on car in Ladner accident BY

Delta police are investigating after a single-vehicle crash in Ladner Thursday. The driver was travelling in the area of Westminster

Avenue and Ferry Road when the vehicle left the road and hit a power pole. As a result, a transformer was dislodged and landed on the car. Police and firefighters responding to the scene but

had to wait for B.C. Hydro to make the area safe before moving in to assist the driver. Once the scene was safe, the driver was taken into custody for impaired driving.

Tsawwassen resident Lucy Tompkins will be cycling for OWL next month. She plans to go on a 1,600-kilometre (1,000mile) bike trip from Land’s End in southwest England to John O’ Groats in northeast Scotland from July 10 to 24. “It’s a popular challenge,” said Tompkins, 45, who previously lived in England. She’s hoping to raise money for the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society in East Ladner. “I just felt they do really, really valuable work,” said Tompkins, noting the local non-profit group lost out on its provincial gaming grant funding. Tompkins, a parks and recreation manager with the City of Richmond, has been training for about three months for her cycling trip. “That’s always a challenge because I work full time.” She goes for a 100-kilometre ride once a week and tries to squeeze in another 50- to 60-kilometre ride on the weekend. I’d also like to look at other school districts and be able to compare.” Milat said he would like to see shared services, but the ministry would have to guide them because districts may be reluctant to hand over some of their control. “When you share services you have that potential of losing some autonomy over the service. But there’s positives you can find such as sharing payroll, for example,” he said. The Delta board discussed the comptrollergeneral’s recommendations, noted Milat. “I think the ministry will show some leadership and start moving forward on some of those recommendations. How it affects Delta, in one way, I think it would be through cost-sharing. I would also like a standardized way of being able to compare school district.” Milat noted Delta has a new superintendent in Dianne Turner, so he’s hoping there’s going to be a new direction with the administration. The B.C. Teachers’ Federation slammed the comptroller-general’s report on the Vancouver board, noting it only showed the minister has refused to be accountable for underfunding the system.

Delta school trustee Fabian Milat sees some potential positives from a recent provincial review of the Vancouver school board. Assigned to review how the Vancouver board manages its finances, comptroller-general Cheryl Wenezenki-Yolland issued a report highly critical of the board, which had been at odds with the government over its budget. The report had a series of recommendations, including more transparent financial reporting by all school districts, increasing rental rates and better links between education funding and student outcomes. Other recommendations to improve efficiencies included consolidation of district procurement and banking, improved technology and shared service arrangements. The recommendations came on the heels of a Ministry of Education announcement that four school districts have been selected to share payroll and business administration systems. It will focus dollars on students instead of administration, announced Education Minister Margaret MacDiarmid. She said the province’s 60 school districts each operate different payroll and business administration systems, so by streamlining them more dollars will go back into the classroom. Milat, who has been critical of the Delta board’s budget in the last couple of years because it has not substantially trimmed administrative costs, told the Optimist there could soon be changes affecting administration in all districts. “I’m always looking from the perspective, ‘Is this new type of model going to be cheaper? Is it going to be

Poised to repeat history TED MURPHY

MURPHY’S LAW Next week’s implementation of the HST has not only seen the ruling Liberals plummet in public opinion polls, but has also raised an interesting scenario as we inch toward the next provincial election. Although that vote is still almost three years off, a shift in the political landscape has begun that threatens to turn this province on its ear. B.C. is traditionally right-of-centre, but the unrest, particularly as a result of the harmonized sales tax, will likely see many voters looking for an alternative to our present government, with or without Gordon Campbell. The Liberal response to this potential exodus has been to suggest the alternatives are worse. They claim supporting a third party, whether it be the Conservatives or one borne out of the anti-HST fight, will only lead to a victory for the NDP, which will do more damage in the time the right of centre takes to coalesce around one party than the HST could ever bring. This rationale — it doesn’t matter what we do, or how much you disagree with our policies, you still have to vote for us because the other guys pose a far greater danger — is arrogant, contemptuous and, most worrisome, rooted in both truth and history. The Liberals, led by Gordon Wilson at the time, emerged from virtual oblivion two decades ago, grabbing the right-ofcentre mantle from the corpse that was Social Credit and giving B.C. voters an option to Mike Harcourt and the NDP. That split in the right wing vote allowed the New Democrats to assume power, but more troubling was a continued fracture of the right wing throughout the 1990s that permitted a Glen Clark-led NDP to capture a second term. History appears poised to repeat itself as the government’s troubles will surely allow a second right-of-centre party to rise to prominence in time for 2013, siphoning enough votes to irreparably damage the Liberals. All the NDP needs to do is hit its traditional 40 per cent support level — and it’s likely to surpass that given the circumstances — to wrest away control of the province. The two right-of-centre parties will then spend the next decade squabbling over which one voters should rally behind in order to oust the NDP before the electorate ultimately makes that decision for them. There are three years to go before all that unfolds, so there’s still time for the Liberals to right the ship, but something tells me the obligatory political egos will allow history to repeat itself.

COMMUNITY COMMENT For those living in Tsawwassen, the time for the survey is over and the counting of opinions has begun. For those living in Ladner, what survey? Amongst the matters under lively debate in South Delta is how to create lower cost housing and housing for seniors. Over the past several months those have been amongst the topics of discussion and debate at Tsawwassen Area Plan Committee meetings. Tsawwassen was created in the days of cheap land and individual septic tank fields. Early lots were one-quarter acre — the required size for a septic field. Then as municipal sanitary sewers came into being, the lots got smaller, but not by much. As most of Tsawwassen was either heritage oceanside summer cottage lots or lots carefully surveyed in the 1960s, there were few

one-acre-plus lots that could have been subdivided. All of this has created a community of fairly uniform lot size. In that regard Tsawwassen looks different from Ladner where many farm-sized lots were created in earlier decades and have since been subdivided. The Tsawwassen Area Plan looked at land and the possibility for increased density, especially near the town centre and on major routes. Several models have been brought forward: • Townhouses, where adjacent homes are attached at their side for several units. These use less land per unit and display an urban character. • More apartments, possibly mirroring those already in Tsawwassen, but a bit farther from the town centre. • Coach houses, where a new house is located between and/or behind an existing house. All are possible and are being examined. If you map out those possibilities along with the development at Tsawwassen Golf and Country Club, the potential result suggests it is possible to accommodate a significant increase in population within our current community

boundaries, and to provide many smaller sized units. All of this is before wondering about the development that might take place on Tsawwassen First Nation lands, where there could be a very significant increase in population. Will these changes be sufficient? It all depends on what planners call “take up” — the rate at which land is transformed to what will be allowed by the zoning. For these changes to take place, much of the land will have to come from replacing existing housing. Our current (20-year-old) plan allows for more than three-quarters of a million square feet of housing in and around the town centre, but very little has been built. It’s early days for these ideas, which have to go through more discussion and debate at the committee level, then to Delta council by way of a report. If supported by council, the plan goes out to you, the public, in a variety of forums and formats. The existing plan took two years, five public hearings and an election to get from the initial report into final bylaw. It’s your community, so you get to decide what shape it will take. The public process won’t likely start until fall. Ladner’s plan comes later.

Retaining the evidence must be required pending innocence or conviction. No thought should be given to turning the evidence over to a private enterprise or insurance agent for use or disposal as they see fit: It is evidence. The Middelaers have given a huge part of their lives pursuing the incarcera-

tion of drunk drivers and I’ll give them every credit in this regard. I would hope they will realize, a failure of our justice system to operate within the bounds of due regard of the evidence in any case would be a failure of the system. Surely this is not what they would want. Proper evidence and proper conviction on the evidence must be the end result. Surely the Middelaers will agree. Ken Smith

New civic partner doesn’t have good track record Editor: Re: West Coast wants Delta’s yard waste, June 9 I was shocked to read the article regarding Delta council’s decision to support an application from West Coast Lawns to Metro Vancouver for a permit to accept municipal yard waste. This operation has been a thorn in the side of Ladner residents for years, having caused a large amount of odour through its outdoor

composting practices. Not only has the municipality largely ignored our complaints and concerns over the years, but it has now taken things one step further and formed a partnership with West Coast. It seems Delta’s main concern here is to save money on tipping fees, only to cause further harm to the community by allowing this operation to grow. I am all for Delta saving a few bucks, but it should

not be done at the expense of people in the surrounding area. I also agree that alternate solutions for waste diversion have to be created, but sending our yard waste to a place that is already causing problems shows a disregard for residents on the part of council. By supporting this facility, Delta will be responsible for any negative effects that will be caused by it and should therefore be more careful before jumping into

The following are some of the calls of interest the Delta police responded to in the South Delta area between Monday, June 14 and Monday, June 21: Tsawwassen • June 19, 1:24 a.m., Winskill Park: Complainant approached police advising that two patio umbrellas valued at $60 had been stolen from his back yard. His shed had also been broken into, with damage set at $200. Nothing was stolen from the shed. The complainant was given a file number for his records. • June 20, 10:13 p.m.: Complainant reported there was a suspicious male going door to door in his neighbourhood. The male was described as black, five foot three, with a leather jacket and jeans. The complainant thought it was suspicious having someone selling books at 10 p.m. on a Sunday. Area patrols were negative • June 21, 5:13 a.m., 1700-block of 55th Street:

Complainant called to report a suspicious male in his neighbourhood. He was going into people’s yards and asking for change. The suspect is six feet tall, reddish hair, wearing khaki shorts, a red shirt and a blue jacket. Area patrols were negative.

The pedestrian was issued a ticket for entering a roadway before it was safe. • June 17, 2:37 p.m., 7500-block of Hopcott Road: Complainant reported a break-in had occurred at approximately 1:17 a.m. It appears two unknown males were captured on security cameras walking through the warehouse and removing items. The value of the theft is approximately $3,600 in electronic equipment from one business and $4,000 in copper wire from another. Police unable to identify suspects.

Listening is 75 per cent of communication! The bottom line is this: If we do not truly hear and understand what someone else is saying, chances are we will respond in less than satisfactory ways. So the question becomes, how well do you — do we — listen to others or to unfolding world events? Or, for that matter, how well do we listen to God? Take prayer, for example. There is this human tendency to use all kinds of words when we pray. God must get tired of all our wordiness at times! The more we speak, the less opportunity there is to hear from each other and from God. Recently I attended a conference at which considerable discussion took place on our human responsibility for climate and environmental change. To my surprise, there was consider-

able “push back” to acknowledging our responsibility. This, while the most significant and devastating oil spill is in progress in the Gulf of Mexico. It made me wonder, have those individuals who resisted acknowledging human responsibility not been able to “listen” to the message this incredible disaster is sending? And this is only one disastrous and ongoing event among many. There are a myriad of less than God honouring voices in God’s world, voices wishing to be heard. In the midst of the myriad of voices, a Hebrew poet, voicing God’s desire, wrote: “If my people would but listen to me (and) follow my ways (they) would be fed with the finest of wheat; with honey from a rock I would satisfy (them).” (cf. Psalm 81:13,16)

The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure wishes to inform motorists of an upcoming change to access to Highway 17 at 28th Avenue in Delta. Beginning on June 24, 2010, access to and from Highway 17 at 28th Avenue, both north and south bound, will be permanently closed for safety reasons and in preparation for construction of the 28th Avenue agricultural overpass.

Tony Bylenga relocates from Arizona to replace retiring Gerri deVos Delta Christian School announced the hiring this week of Tony Bylenga to replace retiring principal Gerri deVos. Bylenga comes to the Ladner private school from Pusch Ridge Christian Academy in Oro Valley, Arizona. Several community events planned to celebrate

anada turns 143 on Thursday and a trio of special events is set to take place in South Delta to celebrate the occasion. • The Delta Museum and Archives is planning a party that will spill out onto Delta Street. The family-oriented, fun-filled event will kick off at 9 a.m. with the traditional pancake and sausage breakfast cooked by the Ladner, North Delta and Scottsdale Lions clubs. Breakfast will be available for purchase until 11 a.m., with all proceeds supporting the museum’s educational programs. Participants will be entertained with toetapping music by Celtic band Doghouse and can enjoy the many crafts, activities and contests throughout the morning. Explore the museum’s three floors of exhibits and hunt for famous Canadians hidden in the historical displays or visit the archives and test your knowledge of Delta’s history. Official ceremonies will begin at 11 a.m. with the singing of our national anthem and messages from local dignitaries. The day will conclude around noon with the cutting of the giant birthday cake. Festivities will be held outside the museum located at 4858 Delta St., in Ladner Village, from 9 a.m. until noon. For further information contact the museum at 604946-9322 or visit www.deltamuseum.ca. • The Tsawwassen Boundary Bay Lions Club will be throwing another Canada Day bash at Diefenbaker Park this year. The event gets going at 10 a.m. and will feature music, entertainment, crafts, face painting and a Fraser Valley Regional Library tent. Entertainer Matt Levy will be back to show off his juggling, balloon twisting and balancing skills. RCMP members, with their Red Serge

uniforms, will be at the park for photos and to help out with a cake cutting at 1 p.m., says event chairman and incoming club president Steve Dane. The national anthem will be sung before the birthday cake is cut, Dane says, adding local dignitaries will be there as well. Hotdogs, popcorn, pop, water and juice will be available. Diefenbaker Park is located at the corner of 56th Street and 1st Avenue. • Ladner’s Kirkland House will be holding its annual Canada Day celebration from noon to 4 p.m. There will be a food concession offering hotdogs, smokies and ice cream treats, music provided by the McKee House Jammers, the Delta Police Pipe Band and children’s games. As well, outdoor and indoor model railroad setups and antique farm tractors will add to the old-fashioned fun. There will also be a slideshow detailing the progress of renovations underway at the heritage home. Kirkland House is located at 4140 Arthur Dr., Ladner. • Point Roberts will be the site of Independence Day celebrations on Sunday, July 4. A parade gets started at noon at the west end of Gulf Road while a Family Funfest at Lighthouse Marine Park goes from 1 to 4 p.m. The parade has an Academy Awards theme and Oscar-nominated visual effects master Robert Habros, known for his work on District 9, will be the grand marshal of the procession.

ancouver pianist Karen Lee-Morlang knew right away she wanted to work with soprano Rhonwen Derbez. The two performers met about 10 years ago while both were students at UBC. They’ll be performing tomorrow night at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre, presenting a show titled Chère Nuit, Songs of Evening and Dreams. “I had my eye on Rhonwen because she had the one of the most beauti-

ful voices I’ve ever heard,” Lee-Morlang says. “I heard Rhonwen sing ... and I said, ‘Oh my gosh, at one point we’re going to work together.’” Derbez sang in LeeMorlang’s graduation recital and the pair has kept in touch over the years, recently working together on a series of concerts. “The very first recital I did was with Karen. It was a really great experience, [she’s] wonderful to work with,” said Derbez, who grew up around the Lower Mainland and is now living in Toronto.

Lee-Morlang shares that sentiment. “I think for me, to be able to work with a singer and artist who is willing to take risks and willing to make herself vulnerable as she sings, there’s no barrier between herself and the audience and with me. I feel like when I play I can also be very free,” the pianist said. Their show in Tsawwassen has a nighttime theme. Having a specific theme gives the pair a chance to present a diversified repertoire, says Lee-Morlang.

“We like to make accessible programs that really mix it up so people who come can enjoy a little bit of everything.” There will be songs from composers Schumann, Strauss, Fauré, Debussy, Chopin, Vaughan Williams, Barber and Rachmaninoff, some Broadway favourites and short piano vignettes. The performance is set for tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Tsawwassen Arts Centre. Tickets cost $15 or $12 for students and seniors. Storm thrive under pressure to win B.C. title Girls field hockey team prevail in both playoff game in penalty strokes to capture provincial gold in thrilling fashion The U13 Falcons Storm girls field hockey team finished off a great season by winning gold at the U14 Tier 3 B.C. Club Championships in West Vancouver. Having lost only two league games all season, the Storm entered the playoff round on Sunday by finishing second in their pool. In the semi-finals they played the first place team from the other pool — Victoria’s Island Tide. At full time game was tied remained scoreless and penalty strokes were required to decide the outcome Brilliant goaltending by Annika Taylor as well as converted strokes by Jill Calvert, Cleo Stratcuzza and Vanessa Pearson secured the victory and a berth in the gold medal game against Cowichan 2. The Vancouver Island squad struck first, however, the Storm fought back hard and were helped by some outstanding attacking play by forwards and midfielders, Hannah Carrothers , Morgan Scoville, Arianna Meeres, Zoe Coates and Georgia Wright who set up Nicole Howlett for the qualizer from the top of the circle. Ashley Hughes and Sammi Harris were two of the more than 25 kids involved in Ladner Minor Fastpitch’s Mentoring Program. Overseen by the teachers of the schools, and supervised by experienced coaches from within LMFA, the entire clinic was instructed by the volunteer ‘mentors.’ Having ‘peer’ coaches, with many not much older than the participants themselves, proved to be wildly popular

with both the kids and teachers. Next was the opportunity to assist and have direct involvement with Mite or LTP teams as they were formed for the 2010 season With many of the ‘mentors’ now actively involved as players on their own teams, time management became a valuable skill to learn. Under the nurturing leadership of the Mite/ LTP head coaches, the mentoring expanded. The senior coaches were asked to take the ‘up-andcoming’ junior coaches under their wing, and incorporate them in their own individual team building. The results were outstanding as the kids on the field were the benefactors of having so much time and support afforded to them individually. With ‘giving back’ proving to be a natural instinct for the youngers of LMFA, some even took it upon themselves to reach other areas outside of the sport. Time was spent assisting serving lunch at a center for the homeless, as well as a significant donation of

Ladner Minor Fastpitch Association (LMFA) wrapped up a very successful softball season last weekend at Hawthorne Park. The fun and enjoyment on the field had by the teams and players, is directly related to the hard work and many initiatives generated by a progressive thinking LMFA executive. Under the leadership of president Fred Wells, much effort was donated throughout the year by these tireless volunteers. The results are now being seen on and off the diamonds . The LMFA’s Mentoring Program was one of the initiatives set up by the executive, to help provide an avenue for the kids to ‘give back’ to the sport. Experience or age wasn’t a factor if players wanted to be involved. All that was required was a commitment to want to help others and to share some of the positives that the sport had given to them. The participants ranged from eight to 18 years of age. The highly successful Learn to Play program (LTP) was taken to ele-

The Delta Islanders Novice House lacrosse team completed an unbeaten run to take top honours at Richmond Minor Lacrosse’s 26th annual Salmon Festival Tournament. The final game proved to be a nail-biter against Juan de Fuca. The Islanders relied on great goaltending and defence, along with some beautiful goals, to get past their Vancouver Island opponent. Donna Williams passed to the level of Shodan (1st degree black belt) and Sensei Graham Mallett, the club’s chief instructor, was award Yondan (4th degree black belt). The seminar, which was also attended by other club members, featured a guest instructor from the Japan Karate association, Sensei Yasuo Hanzaki ( a 6th degree black belt) and Sensei Don Sharp (a 5th degree black belt) who is the technical chairman of the Japan Karate Association of B.C. The Tsawwassen Shotokan Karate Club’s training sessions are held on Mondays and Thursdays (7 p.m.-8:30 p.m.) during the school year at the South Park elementary gym. Over the summer, the club moves to the Bayside Club in Boundary Bay. The non-profit Tsawwassen Shotokan Karate Club was established in 1981 and has a long history of teaching traditional Japanese karate in a friendly atmosphere. Volunteer instructors are black belts certified by the Japan Karate Association and the club is affiliated with the Japan Karate Association of B.C. New members age 10 and up are always welcome.

HENDRY James Keith (Jim) Died peacefully June 14, 2010 at Delta Hospital. Jim was predeceased by his mother, Verne and father, Roderick, his brothers John Matthew and Wesley Roderick and recently by his sister-in-law Sophie. Left to remember his love of family and his sense of humour, are his wife Diane, his daughters Danica, Lisa and Tanis, his son-in-law Dave Price and his grandsons Baker, Marley and Ethan, who were the light of his life. He also leaves his sister Darlene, his brother Wayne as well as many extended family members. Celebration of Jim’s life will be on Thursday, June 24, 2010 at 2pm in the Tsawwassen United Church, 693 53 Street, Tsawwassen. The family wishes to thank Dr. Martin Ray, his staff and everyone at Delta Hospital for their wonderful care of Jim and support of his family. MAY - Frederick Duncan May (Born April 4, 1923) passed away peacefully on June 22, 2010 surrounded by his family. Duncan was a pioneer farmer who lived his entire life on his farm in East Richmond, where he was born. He grew up growing potatoes, strawberries, cranberries and milking cows. Right up until his last days he loved to feed his calves, host the neighbourhood in the coffee room, work the fields on the tractor and watched his boys farm all around him. Duncan was predeceased by his loving wife Pat the mother of his five boys, Randy (Joy), Ron (Lila) Hap (Bev) Dave (Kim) and Glen (Sherry). Papa Duncan was also a spectacular example of strength and love for his 17 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Also predeceased by his loving wife Faye Quo Vadis and her four children, spouses and seven grandchildren. Duncan was a loving husband to his wife Violet Koch, who he leaves behind and her four children, spouses and eight grandchildren. Duncan also leaves behind his siblings Norman (Rose) John (Doreen) and Rosemary and many loving nieces and nephews. Duncan will be honoured by having a Celebration of Life at the farm in the field by his home at 14551 Cambie Road on July 14 from 2:00 to 4:00. In lieu of flowers, a donation to your choice of charity. A special Thank you to Salvation Army Rotary Hospice and the Nurses Next Door who took such wonderful care of him . The true measure of a person is how many people he has touched, Duncan will be truly missed.
