Ladner loses local landmark

Onlookers in Ladner Village watched the demolition of a local landmark Thursday when Johnny’s Store was torn down. The building at the corner of Elliott Street and Ladner Trunk Road housed a convenience store since 1963. It will be replaced by a two-storey structure with retail on the ground floor and offices above. Meanwhile, further changes will be coming to area as the Downtown Ladner Waterfront Redevelopment Advisory Committee will soon submit its recommendations.

Carol Berner failed a roadside breathalyzer test after admitting to drinking two glasses of wine on the day she hit two people with her car, a Delta police officer testified this week.

Const. Sarah Swallow was the first police officer on the scene of the crash on 64th Street in Ladner more than two years ago. She gave evidence Thursday during the voir dire –0 a trial within a trial to determine the admissibility of evidence. Judge Peder Gulbransen will next week

determine if that evidence can be used at trial. Defense attorney David Tarnow had pushed for a publication ban on the evidence presented during the voir dire, but he abandoned his application on Thursday morning on legal grounds. Berner is on trial at Surrey

Relocation Sale of Fine Art

Provincial Court charged with impaired driving causing death, dangerous driving causing death, impaired driving causing bodily harm and dangerous driving causing bodily harm. On May 17, 2008, four-yearold Alexa Middelaer and her aunt Daphne Johanson were feeding

a horse in the 4300-block of 64th Street when a car driven by Berner plowed into them. Alexa died a short time later while Johanson was severely injured and spent four weeks in hospital recovering.
