Move to rename YVR to Terry Fox Airport gaining strength East Side woman’s petition not the first Mike Howell

An East Side woman has started an online petition to rename the Vancouver International Airport after Terry Fox, the celebrated cancer victim whose annual run has raised hundreds of millions of dollars for cancer research. Elspeth Sage, a curator and writer, said she was inspired to start the petition after recently travelling through overseas airports named after people instead of a city’s geographical location. “They were all named after leaders or important people of those countries,” she said of her travels, which included stops at

Charles De Gaulle airport in Paris and Instanbul Ataturk airport in Turkey. Though De Gaulle was a popular French leader and Mustafa Kemal Ataturk the founder of modern Turkey, Sage said Fox’s name and story has an international reach unlike many politicians. Annual Terry Fox runs occur in dozens of countries around the world, including Vietnam, Cuba and Saudi Arabia, where millions of participants have run and walked to raise money in memory of the late Port Coquitlam native who died of cancer in 1981 at age 22. “We’re so proud of him that I think locally, if it was ever voted on, it would be

approved,” said Sage, noting this year marked the 30th anniversary of Fox’s Marathon of Hope. “It’s the right thing to do and it’s a perfect time. It’s been long enough. Clearly, his memory is a living one—and growing.” Sage’s petition, which she launched Sept. 12, isn’t the first of its kind. A Camosun College student started a petition last year to rename the airport after Fox. But the website Robert Ganzer set up to solicit signatures was no longer accessible Monday. Upon learning of Ganzer’s petition drive, Sage said she hoped they could combine efforts to reignite the campaign. See LIBERAL on page 4

As the Vancouver School Board debates which schools to close to save the cash-strapped district money, the Courier has learned the tally for Comptroller General Cheryl WenezenkiYolland’s highly critical report on the board’s financial performance neared $165,000. The figure includes upwards of $98,000 in wages, almost $17,000 in accommodation expenses and more than $15,000 in travel costs. The Courier obtained the total project

cost and its breakdown through a freedom of information request. The detailed information from the Ministry of Finance, office of the comptroller general, arrived Friday. Ten staff were assigned to conduct the financial review full time. Their wages totalled $98,127.76, with benefits tagged at $23,708.48. Contractor costs were $4,055. Travel-related costs, including helicopter, floatplane, ferry, taxi and car expenses, added up to $15,378.86. There were 28 ferry trips and 76 flights between April 15 and June 3.
