tefan Pylarinos says he’s approached more women than any other man in Vancouver. More than 5,000. More than 10,000. And between him and the friends who eventually became his business partners, they claim they’ve chatted up, wooed, picked up or simply been shot down by as many as 25,000 women in Vancouver. “I don’t like the word pick-up artist. It has a negative connotation,” he said. “It puts the emphasis on taking. I really believe a relationship is more about trying to add value to someone else’s life instead of trying to get something. I want everyone to be better off for having met me.” The concept of giving value to the women he approaches is one of the fundamental principles of Lifestyle Transformations, the business he co-founded in December 2007 on the premise that their collective (countless) experiences and exploits can be shared and monetized. Pylarinos is 24. He continues to play the ﬁeld and now coaches other men what he learned through trial and error. At a “master dating seminar” called Don’t be Alone this Valentine’s Day held in the atrium of a downtown language school, 10 men, most in their 20s, some in their early 30s and one who could be in his 50s, gather for a weekly seminar to learn how to break the ice with strangers, improve their networking skills and, yes, score a woman’s number with the intention of making plans to date her. In Vancouver, Man Meets Woman, Happy Sexy You, Social Fluency and Lifestyle Transformations are but a few examples of businesses selling advice to render heterosexual daters more attractive and appear more approachable to the oppo-

There are also relationship bootcamps for couples and individual coaches, who work with clients to identify and pursue their goals. Anyone looking for snake oil will find a salesman, says Derrick Sweet, the founder and executive director of the Canadian-owned Certified Coaches Federation. “As far as credentials are concerned, we believe the number one criteria for being a coach is your life and your life experience.” Certification adds value, but he says life experience trumps training and courses in the life coaching business. He also believes good coaches can bring enormous benefits to their clients.

No, he says, I should not ask a man out on a date. Lolekonda goes on, nods his head and waits for me to haul myself up off the floor with my distressed feminist ego. He’s saying those words again: Don’t ask a man out on a date. It’s not what men want. It won’t benefit you. “Because it can set the wrong pattern from the get-go. If the woman constantly initiates, most likely the man will grow accustomed to that and let her do so until she grows resentful of

the fact that he should lead and initiate.” Lolekonda, a certified life coach who specializes in the romantic push-and-pull of the heart, works one-on-one with clients seeking dating advice in particular. He isn’t a counsellor—not a therapist, clinician or psychologist—but speaking with him means opening up and tackling specific challenges with the tools and exercises designed to assess habits and hopefully forge better ones. He leaves clients with a reference book detailing goals and values they expressed to him. And he works exclusively with women, believing his male perspective brings added value. The recently engaged Lolekonda grew up in Morocco, Europe and the U.S. before he moved to Vancouver in 2009 from Edmonton and started his eponymous service that caters to “the professional woman.” He puts it this way: “Considering the challenges women face when looking for love, I am responsible for putting you in the driver’s seat when it comes to your dating life.” Professional women with the confidence to pursue their goals and ambitions are still encouraged, surprisingly, to take a back seat to a man who can drive the relationship on her behalf. Although he caters to entrepreneurs, careerists and the most motivated among us, Lolekonda advises behaviour that seems contradictory to the ethos of the women he calls his clients. Not so, he says. “Not to say that women can’t ask a man out but a woman should always find a way to have a man ask her out. A woman should give enough clues to men so they realize it is safe to ask her out and they will be rewarded for it,” he says. “It’s not so much a form of game playing than it is an effective way to set the right tempo of the relationship early on. We’re a society of narcissists, neurotics and over-achievers who seek validation of our dreams and ambitions and solace from our failures and setbacks. The shrink gained notoriety and then acceptance through the late ’80s and ’90s and now the life coach—a couch session free of Freud—is on the rise. Lolekonda became certified as a life and business coach in 2009 through Results Coaching Systems, a training organization with a reach in 15 countries that accredits coaches under the banner of International Coach Federation. The worldwide membership of the ICF nearly doubled in the past five years, growing from 9,041 members in 2005 to more than 17,600 last year. Since the federation started tracking Canadian membership, the number of certified coaches

I struggled with that.” She put the same questions to Lolekonda over the course of six coaching sessions: “If I like someone, and I can’t tell him, how do I show him that I like him?” Her answer may have been the most surprising of all. She came to the realization that she agreed with the advice, albeit reluctantly. “Guys like to be in control of a situation, I do believe this.” After a brief hiatus, Dhillon, 32, put herself back on the market in January. She has an online proﬁle on Plenty of Fish, has experimented with eHarmony and also uses Shaadi, an Indian matrimonial website. Being told a straight-shooting, direct approach would not serve her in the end, she landed on the philosophy that would allow her to direct indirectly. “You’re active in the way that you’re being who you are. You’re doing the things you love,” she said. “A friend of mine says, ‘Men are the seekers and women just want to be found.’” In her experience, it worked. “The ones I initiate with, they never stick around that long. If you like someone, let them know.” Gnazdowsky built her coaching service, One Conversation, on the virtues of self-discovery and self-improvement and has been seeing clients since 1991. “I really do want people to win at love,” she said. Her advice: “Be real. Don’t play hard to get. Don’t play like you’re interested and front like it’s the guy who should do all the work.” Asked if women should refrain from asking a man out, her response is emphatic. “Oh no, no, no, no!” When Gnazdowsky tells the story of her courtship with the man she met nearly 20 years ago at age 33 and for whom she eventually moved to Vancouver from Montreal, she’s the one who initiated. “I asked him out,” she said, remembering an afternoon in downtown Vancouver when she stopped him on the sidewalk after a coaching conference they were both attending. She was smitten. But she was stymied, not sure her gestures and bright smile were enough to convey her profound interest and draw him in the direction she wanted them

On reflection, she concedes she didn’t. He asked her. And before he did, she showed him the answer would be emphatic. “Yes!”

Pylarinos believes, like magnets, the opposite polarities of masculine and feminine create attraction. “In my opinion, it’s more of a man’s role or a man’s instinct for him to pursue.” Taking charge is the most comfortable role for most men and with a woman he wants to be “able to read her and lead her.” Of the top goals for their clients, Pylarinos and his business partner Cheyenne Kamran, who is leading the evening seminar, want them to learn how to be inherently social and friendly. The three-day weekend bootcamps that take male clients to malls, parks, nightclubs and cafés to test their skills in a real-world classroom cost up to $2,000. I met clients who signed up more than once. Before the end of his lecture, Kamran drops a wise line that applies to men and women, heterosexual and otherwise, game-players, the charmless, the clueless and those seeking The One. The body of the black guitar hanging in the Vancouver School Board lobby looks almost plastic and could fool a casual observer. Detailed work created this appearance. Leon Kinloch, a Van Tech high school student, found an old destroyed guitar at Value Village, salvaged the mechanical pieces, and made his own guitar body and neck using wood from an Eastern maple tree, explained instructor Rory Brown from the secondary school’s fine woodworking program. “It’s wood, it’s just really, really well painted,” Brown said. “It’s got like four layers of lacquer on it. We really obsessed over the paint job. We wanted a neat, black, super-uniform [finish] to make it almost look like plastic.” The guitar is one of a dozen student woodworking projects on display at the VSB’s Broadway office until March 4 as part of an annual Van Tech show called Art in Craft 4. Kinloch, a Grade 12 student, also produced a tin can guitar “with a real nice banjo, sort of old-time sound to it,” according to Brown, as well as a third more ornate guitar. Grade 12 student Caydin Sitinjack built a marimba. Sitinjack and Brown researched key length and how to tune them by reduc-

gram. This year, many pieces were created in a new course within the program called Potlatch Arts, which has an aboriginal focus and teaches traditional and contemporary arts and crafts techniques. Tysone Loyer carved several pieces, including a large wall plank, which students Brian Charlie and Eric Cunningham also

worked on. Loyer, a 16-year-old Grade 11 student and nephew of renowned First Nation artist Henry Robertson, has a natural gift and picked carving up quickly, according to Brown. It took the teenager more than three weeks to carve the plank. “It’s just a long process because it’s so big,” Loyer said. “[Potlach Arts is] probably my favourite class. Even in my regular woodworking block I’m usually carving, too. Everyone’s making tables and cutting boards but I usually just work on my carving.” He wants to continue carving, but is considering studying carpentry at BCIT after graduation. “I’m deﬁnitely glad I got to keep my culture alive—my mom’s gone a little bit crazy about it—she’s making all these Facebook pages about my carving, so my family’s deﬁnitely proud of me and I’m glad I was able to make my family proud of me.” Brown’s goal is to encourage the best out of student woodworkers. “I want to get the most out of each kid that I can get out of them,” he said. Pick your cliché for those lately waking up to the fact that Vancouver city council is on the verge of approving Western Canada’s biggest gambling den next to B.C. Place Stadium: The horse is already out of the barn; that bell has been rung; it’s a done deal.

On Wednesday evening, a hurriedly assembled coalition calling itself “Vancouver Not Vegas” pulled in a relatively feeble 125 folks—virtually all white—to the Chinese Cultural Centre to bemoan their dilemma and try to build opposition to attend city council’s Feb. 17 public hearing on the issue. Vancouver’s renowned architect Bing Tom told the audience he had just been recruited to the cause two or three days earlier and said it felt like “we are sleepwalking into this.” The casino will be run by Las Vegas-based Paragon Gaming Inc., which now operates a slew of casinos on native reserves south of the border and has a B.C. connection on its board. B.C. blogger Sean Holman ﬁrst reported that T. Richard Turner was the head of the B.C. Lottery Corporation (BCLC) when he was offered and accepted shares in Paragon’s operations in Alberta, a matter Turner failed to disclose at the time. He has since left BCLC. But it’s certainly part of the reason folks have become skeptical of BCLC’s role as a regulator. There is also the fact that this is a regulator with a mandate to maximize government revenues from gambling. That would explain former NPA councillor Peter Ladner’s comment at the coalition meeting: “To put BCLC in charge of monitoring gam-

allengarr bling is like putting the Hells Angels in charge of monitoring crime.” Even though every city councillor, regardless of political stripe, has expressed concern about the impact of tripling the number of slot machines in downtown Vancouver, you get the impression they feel helplessly trapped. The decision they face to allow expanded gambling is part of a complex series of decisions that were initially triggered when a previous council (which included many on this council) agreed to allow the land next to the stadium to be rezoned. It was part of a plan by the province to develop land around the stadium to generate revenue that would pay for the half-billion dollar plus stadium renovation including the new roof. Council also agreed to give up all development cost levies and community amenity contributions most developers pay in these kinds of

circumstances. But it doesn’t end there. To build the casino and adjacent hotels, the provincial crown corporation, PavCo, arranged a swap with neighbouring Concord Development. PavCo would get more commercial usage and Concord would get more residential density for four condo towers it was planning. Then there is one more piece. In exchange for not including social housing units in those condo towers, Concord has agreed to give the city two pieces of property on nearby Hasting Street in the Downtown Eastside. The city hopes to use that land to build affordable housing. All of these deals—from ﬁxing the stadium, building the casino and hotel, to Concord’s condos and the free land on Hastings—are intimately connected. They are a daisy chain of deals that would arguably collapse if any one link was removed. So while council wrings its hands over the prospect of increasing gambling and the likely possibility of the loan sharking, money laundering and addiction that goes with it, reversing that decision is a long shot at best. You can bet they are being squeezed as they have been in the past over decisions on increasing gambling. There’s the union representing workers and the gambling industry that has contributed to their campaign coffers while promising millions for city revenues. And let’s not forget the province, hungry as any addict for what the cash ﬁx gambling means to their treasury. agarr@vancourier.com

Must-read book list for elected and influential For the past four years, Canadian author Yann Martel has been mailing books to Stephen Harper. Every other Monday, the PMO’s office has received a volume personally selected by Martel, with an accompanying letter. The author of the best-selling Life of Pi has now officially called it quits. He says Harper never responded once to this one-way reading club, which began back in 2007 when Martel and 49 other Canadian writers attended a 2007 soiree in Ottawa celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Canada Council for the Arts. The Independent quotes Martel’s agent, Jackie Kaiser, who said that Harper “barely acknowledged” the gathered scribes. But people who have power over me? I want them to read because their limited, impoverished dreams may become my nightmares.” Good point. When it comes to intellectual self-defence, there’s nothing better than a library card. And what’s good for the electorate should be good for the elected. However, an ability to reflect is critical. A book is like a mirror: if an ass looks in, you can’t expect an astrophysicist to look out. Actually, I suspect that reading and ruling are a bit at odds. Curling up with a book takes valuable time away from back-slapping, glad-handing, and arm-twisting. The Nelson Mandelas and Vaclev Havels, intellectuals who had all the time in the world during their prison years, are thin on the ground. (According to biographer Kitty Kelley, a writer for the New Yorker who once visited the Bush family compound in Kennebunkport, Maine tried to find something to read late at night. After investigating the entire mansion, he found only one volume: The Fart Book.) In the age of Twitter, a short story or essay is close to being Tolstoy’s War and Peace. And to be fair to Harper, if I was on the receiving end of Yann Martel’s biweekly books, I’m not sure I’d get through many of them. But it was a noble effort on the author’s part. He tried to harvest a reading leader, and although the seeds fell on fallow ground in this case, he was probably on to something. So here are a few media items I can imagine sending out to a

For mum’s-the-word Mansbridge, a copy of Jim Marr’s conspiratorial page-turner. • The Tank Man DVD for Kevin Falcon. Back in 2006, the guy ‘joked’ that “China really has the ultimate Kevin Falcon government structure,” while discussing ramming through public infrastructure projects in B.C. A real standup guy, Kev deserves to see this exceptional PBS documentary, which tracks the fate of the brave stranger with a suitcase who briefly stood down tanks in Tiananmen Square in 1989. • Two tickets to Kenny Rogers’s farewell tour for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. The old smoothie has a weakness for men on horseback. His editorial closes with homage to a recent visit by Jan Gehl, an international celebrity in the world of city planning. A packed UBC event featured a Gehl lecture followed by panel discussion. Two city councillors participated in that plannerfest. Back in June 2010, I cited a solid academic literature review, together with Jan Gehl by name, in six pages of comment on Norquay planning open houses. The key point: six storeys is a widely accepted upper limit to the human scale that

encourages pedestrianism. In November 2010, those two councillors (and all others except David Cadman and Ellen Woodsworth) voted to incentivize developers with a base building height of up to 10 storeys along 1.3 kilometres of Kingsway truck corridor. So much for our “neighbourhood centre” and a walkable Norquay Village! I wish all that Gehl hoopla amounted to more than superﬁcial bandwagoneering. To the editor: Re: “Vancouver city hall earmarks millions for social housing,” Feb. 4. Thank you for the funnies in this article, noting that Coun. Kerry Jang deems STIR a “raging success.” With over 1,000 signatures on a petition against its implementation, is he serious? Then again, I really howled reading that the city would reassess the program at year end. Much like they reassesed the bike lane trials before making those permanent? Or like they did with the HEAT shelters Victoria had to close due to too much violence, drugs and trouble? What a farce. To the editor: In reference to many articles over a long period of time, and speciﬁcally to two published last week. There seems to be this steady onslaught from sources that seem to be “in the know” about housing issues. One perplexing problem that seems to constantly get confused is that of “affordable” housing and “social” housing. Let’s face it, there are no “affordable” houses in Vancouver—full stop. Affordability for new things such as housing is an oxymoron. New items are luxury. They always have been, and always will be. Those who can afford, do. Those who can’t afford, take the economical route and procure secondhand, used or rent. Social housing is another thing altogether. That is the housing, which we as

a society, deem necessary to provide to those who cannot even afford “low income” rentals at the regular market rate. We do so at an expense shared by all in the community. This sort of providing for those in need is an essential element to a caring society, and is a good and proper thing. Building “affordable” housing at taxpayer expense is simply wrong. Social housing is not commerce, it is charity; “affordable” housing is commerce. New stock housing, by virtue of being brand new, will never be in the realm of affordable (at least not in this geographical region) to any logical thinking person. Roberts is detailing their adventure of transforming a dismally passé Kitsilano condo into a pad worthy of a profitable bidding war that will give them a leg up on Vancouver’s “ludicrous” property ladder. “We’re equal parts OCD to ADD and hope to chart our path from quotidian to chaos with as much mirth as we’ve got,” the 27-year-old Roberts writes on her Meet My Ugly Baby blog. Ernst and Young, receiver for the troubled development, is poised to provide details about the design and execution of new marketing strategies for the 474 unsold condominiums. The accounting firm is expected to file a report with the Supreme Court of B.C. within the week. The city is owed $740 million for the development. Bob Rennie of Rennie Marketing Systems expects the new marketing strategy to be made public Feb. 17. Local media outlets have noted that Francesco Aquilini of Aquilini Investment Group, a development company that owns Rogers Arena and the Canucks, has expressed interest in buying the remaining condos. Ernst and Young says it has been approached by “several parties” that have indicated their interest in the development, but none of those approaches have resulted in a “definitive proposal.” Ernst and Young is assessing various alternatives for recouping money on the project. NPA Coun. Suzanne Anton noted that when it

comes to bulk versus individual condo sales, “there’s a philosophical question there, whether to take your losses earlier or to take them later.” She likely wouldn’t favour a bulk sale. “Because the only way someone would take it at a bulk sale, they would take it at a fairly signiﬁcant discount,” she says. But, Anton says, the receiver controls the sales strategy. She doesn’t believe Aquilini is in active discussions with Ernst and Young. Vision Vancouver Coun. Geoff Meggs says he wants “the best mix of sales that produces value for taxpayers” and he trusts Ernst and Young to sort that strategy out. The city announced in November that the Olympic Village was in receivership and that Millennium Southeast False Creek Properties was to transfer ownership of the condos and commercial spaces at the village to

the city. Of the 737 condos for sale in this Southeast False Creek development, 263 have sold. Of Millennium Water’s 119 market rental units, 104 have tenants. As of mid-January, only two of the commercial spaces were occupied. COHO Management Services, an arm of the Co-operative Housing Federation of B.C., started handing over keys for the city’s 252 social and market rental and co-op units the week before Christmas. Thirty of these affordable rental units are occupied. Anton blames the lack of condo sales since the Olympic Games ended on the mayor, for casting a “black cloud” on the development. The city prosecutor’s office is now handling four cases related to violations of Vancouver’s tree bylaw after another homeowner allegedly removed trees without authorization. Eighteen trees were axed on a property at 2008 Southwest Marine Dr. late last week even though the owner only had approval to chop down four diseased trees. A city inspector visited the site Thursday after being told more than four trees were being removed. He issued a stop work order, but returned Friday to discover 14 had come down without approval. “My understanding is those 14 other trees [the owner] removed were healthy trees,” said Will Johnston, the city’s director of licences and inspections, noting some of the trunks were six to eight inches in diameter. Charges against the homeowner have been referred to the prosecutor’s office—fines could range from $500 to $10,000 per tree for a maximum $140,000 penalty. The homeowner is also being ordered to replace the trees that were removed without a permit and hire a geotechnical engineer to check the

stability of the slope where they were removed. “[He’ll] submit that to verify the slope is safe and, if it isn’t, what needs to be done to make it safe. The report will also have to deal with how he removes the roots,” Johnston said. Johnston said the city takes all tree bylaw cases seriously, but acknowledges some homeowners can afford hefty fines. “It depends on the site and the financial situation of the person who’s doing it, but what’s important is that the city is sending a message that if you do this, this is what we can do under our bylaw. There is the financial penalty, but we’re also looking at you to replace the trees that you removed.” It’s the most recent breach of the tree bylaw, but three other cases are still being dealt with by the city. Before Christmas, Arran Stephens, owner of Nature’s Path organics, removed trees on his West Side property without approval. Some were dead and dying. Stephens said he was trying to improve the long-neglected yard, but acknowledged his error and indicated he was prepared to make amends and pay a fine. There’s “nothing public yet” on the status of that case, according to the city’s communication department.

Another case involves four trees being chopped down without a permit on a property at 204 West 11th Ave., but the communications department didn’t have details about that incident. Meanwhile, final sentencing is scheduled for March 16 on a 2009 case involving a property at 6060 Olympic Dr. In May of that year, 23 cedar, cypress and evergreen trees were axed. The tree removal was inadvertently caught on camera by a specially equipped passing vehicle taking pictures for Google Street Views, which links pictures of city streets to Google’s mapping program. The property consisted of two legal lots side by side measuring 66 feet by 116 feet. The city expects the fine to be in the range of $20,000. The incident happened before a new tree bylaw came into effect Jan. 1, 2010. The highest fine imposed for a tree bylaw infraction was in 2007. Seventytwo trees were cut down on three adjacent sites on Belmont Avenue listed for $14.8 million. Realtor Paulo Leung pleaded guilty and was fined $2,850 per tree for a total penalty of $205,000. Gerry O’Neil, owner of Stanley Park Horse Drawn Tours, told me Wednesday he’s relieved no horses were hurt after a suspicious fire broke out at his Pipeline Road facility early Wednesday morning. O’Neil received a phone call at 3 a.m. telling him a fire had broken out. His horses are in the Fraser Valley and won’t return to Stanley Park for a month. Luckily the horses kept in the Vancouver Police Department’s barn, which is adjacent to the tour facility, were also safe. But two carriages sustained damage when the tent-style tarps covering them were set on fire. The most badly damaged carriage was one O’Neil had just rebuilt. He estimates the damage at between $50,000 and $80,000. According to O’Neil, the fire is being considered an arson.

In Wednesday’s edition of the Courier I covered early election rumours regarding the park board.

Ian Robertson I was able to reach everyone on the board with the exception of NPA commissioner Ian Robertson who was out of town. He gave me a call Wednesday. I asked him about the rumour he might be taking a run at the mayor’s chair. He didn’t conﬁrm or deny it but added there’s a “50 per cent chance” he won’t run for park board again after having served two terms. He said he might want to focus more time on his family, his career and shedding the extra 10 pounds he’s put on since being elected to park board six years ago. “I haven’t had much time to hit the gym,” said Robertson. I also asked him if Green Party commissioner Stuart Mackinnon had been approached by the NPA to run for council. I’ve heard two versions of that rumour— one that includes Mackinnon being approached to run as part of a multi-party coalition and another that has him joining the NPA. Robertson said the story was news to him, but added

The Vancouver park board actually beat NYC to it, implementing the smoking ban here last September. According to a story in the New York Daily News, NYC council voted 36 to 12 last week to approve the ban. The Vancouver smoking ban includes sports ﬁelds, courts and ball diamonds, as well as playgrounds, pathways, trails, the seawall and public golf courses. Across the city the ban includes green spaces, access streets, sidewalks and parking lots. According to the article, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg initially questioned the proposal—until he saw a photograph of more than 1,000 cigarette butts heaped together on the beach at Coney Island. Cooperative membership includes teenagers, seniors

Motorcycle repair shop teaches tools of the trade Sandra Thomas Staff writer

When Paul Malowany was a teenager in 1975, he needed to repair a flat tire on his motorcycle. Malowany, now a motorcycle mechanic, took his beloved motorcycle to a West Side shop where his tire was fixed. But he was charged $100. “As a kid I’d never even seen $100,” said Malowany. “I told them I had $25 and they said OK, we’ll take your $25 and you can work the rest off over three months.” In those three months of pushing a broom around the shop and holding flashlights and

tools for mechanics, Malowany absorbed as much information as he could about motorcycle repairs. “I’d listen to those guys and between ‘F’n this and F’n that,’ the information started to stick,” he said. Malowany dreamed of owning his own shop. That dream came true last May when Malowany and business partner Simon Travis opened Motomethod Community Motorcycle Repair Shop on Frances Street, where they rent out benches, bays and tools and teach teenagers how to repair their own flat tires. And not just teenagers. The age range of the clientele fre-

quenting Motomethod runs from 16-year-olds to seniors, including some veterans. Women, including several grandmothers, make up 30 per cent of the 100-plus members of the cooperative. Membership costs $100 and includes, coincidently, free tire changes, one free pickup, discount on parts and tires, access to the shop and winter bike storage for $1 a day. The shop offers classes and tools are available for rent. “Everyone gets along,” Malowany said. “It’s disarming because you don’t know what the guy next to you knows, so when you see him TIG welding in the machine shop you bow

3,000 strikeouts with less than 1,000 walks (997). Jenkins pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies, Texas Rangers and Boston Red Sox, but he is best known for his tenure with the Chicago Cubs from 1966-1973.

Vancouver Public Library’s Kensington Branch is scheduled to reopen March 1. The branch was damaged in late October when a storm drain backed up during a major rainstorm. New flooring is currently being installed, which will be followed by reinstalling the shelving and then shelving all the library material—books, newspapers, magazines, CDs and DVDs. The branch is located in King Edward Village where Kingsway, King Edward and Clarke Drive converge. No contamination was found in the flooring or drywall; however, the carpets were severely damaged and are being replaced. And areas of drywall were removed in order for the insulation to dry out. No library materials were damaged and they have been removed from the branch and are being stored off-site. During the closure no fines will be charged on any materials and if people had items on hold at the branch they’ll be there for pick up when the branch reopens. In addition to hotels and B&Bs, the Sunshine Coast has several good restaurants for your tasting pleasure. We tried the Blue Heron, a cozy eatery on the water, stocked with an impressive list of seafood entrees. We had the Queen Charlotte Halibut and Dover Sole, each served lovingly in a savory

white sauce. As a transplanted Maritimer, I know seafood. (Note: The Keg’s rubbery lobster ain’t seafood). The Blue Heron scores. It gets my “Halifax Tested” seal of approval. So my Valentine’s getaway was a big hit. While not cheap, the Sunshine Coast pays off in romance. Try as you might, fellas, there’s no getting around the importance of Valentine’s Day. You must participate or face the consequences, which may include Saturday nights alone in a darkened room watching Three’s Company reruns while dribbling Safeway burritos and Wildcat beer on your tighty whiteys. So last week I bought two ferry tickets to the Sunshine Coast for a weekend of early Valentine’s romance. When I’m in search of misinformation I listen to talk radio. Not long ago a particular radio show was an ode to the registration and insurance of bikes and cyclists. Talk radio is infamous for having callers do no more than state what the previous caller did in a different way; this show was no exception. Every caller cast cyclists as reckless and in complete disregard for the rules. The kneejerk human reaction to this debate was to regulate—make registration and insurance mandatory for cyclists. I won’t pick apart the callers’ statements; all I need to say is it’s obvious that few cyclists called in. Naturally, there was no perspective and no facts, and cyclists were painted with a broad brush. Allow me to outline a few of my opinions as they’ll give you a sense of my cycling ideology. Critical Mass is an absolute joke and these renegades need to get jobs and contribute in a productive way to society. We need to be critical of police who do a lackluster job

jeffreyhansen-carlson of enforcing cycling-related laws. People who don’t ride bikes should not be representing the interests of cyclists. People who make an issue out of nothing are drains on society. Finally, less regulation is always better than more. Registering your bike is smart, but no amount of regulation will make stupid people smart. If you choose to register your bike, visit CanadaBikeRegistry.com, pay your $10 and have your bike registered. That sounds simple, doesn’t it? It’s not necessary to continue the registration debate, unless of course someone stands to gain a vote or two by beating a dead horse. Registering yourself as a

rider is less smart. Let’s take baby steps. If the police have no interest in the cyclists that have tossed the rulebook in the trash then how can we expect them to police rider registration, too? You have to crawl before you can walk and walk before you can run. When it comes to policing the set of cycling-related laws that exist today, police are in the fetal position, pre-crawl. Insuring a rider is also less smart. There are two types of accidents that occur on bikes: the kind where the rider makes an error and solo crashes, and the kind where the rider is hit by a car. If a car hits you, and you live, presumably you are covered under the guilty party’s auto insurance policy. If you have the misfortune of a solo crash it is no different than tripping over a crack while on a stroll along the pier. Should walkers be required to have insurance? The answer is never regulation—it’s common sense and I’m not the only cyclist with a little bit of it. Jeffrey@theroadiescholar.com

Spidermites, dry air, lack of sun may explain palm’s problems then brown and eventually fell off. How can I save this plant?

annemarrison Q: I water my palm lightly once a week and replaced one inch of soil from the top and added new soil. But for the past month the bottom leaves have been turning yellow,

Anne Kocherkewych, Vancouver A: I wonder what the name of your palm is. There are many kinds and whatever treatment you give your palm may not be suitable for every type of palm. Some palms need sunnier conditions than others. Sun-loving palms and many houseplants get most unhappy through our dark winters, but typically recover when spring arrives. Have you checked it over with a magnifying glass? If there are small webs, your palm could have spidermites. Spraying twice a day with

plain, cold water will control these if you’re persistent for several weeks. You can then taper off gradually, but should continue once a week routinely to keep the mite population from increasing. Generally, under watering gets you into less trouble with palms than over-watering. But if the soil is shrinking away from the sides of the pot, it’s possible the palm is too dry and water is ﬂooding away down the inner sides and not moistening the root ball. You can combat this problem by soaking the pot and palm in a tub of water for a couple of hours. Many palms like high humidity.

It’s possible your home is too hot and dry for palms. You could try misting daily and/or standing the pot on a pebble tray (a water-ﬁlled tray with a layer of gravel or pebbles). Humidity rises around the plant as the water evaporates. The water needs to be topped up periodically and occasionally the stones should be washed. Another possibility is your palm needs more nutrition. Lack of nitrogen can cause leaves to yellow. In the growing season, a twice-monthly feed of balanced, liquid fertilizer should help.

Q: I have four orange trees. This year all of them have changed their

leaves from a nice, dark green to a light yellowish green. I guess there’s a deficiency. Iron? What can I do?

E. Seewald A: It does sound like an iron deﬁciency. You need a container of chelated iron from a garden centre. This should be watered onto the soil according to instructions on the label. It takes a while to be effective, but the problem does clear up with treatment. This problem is very common with pot-grown citrus trees. Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions. KISSABLE LIPS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY When it comes to Valentine’s makeup, there is no point just smearing some lipstick on and hoping for the best. Preparation is the key, according to the ‘pouty’ people at Squidoo. Apply lipstick as the last part of your makeup routine. It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of flash mobs as a relevant and at times subversive cultural phenomenon. Flash mobs were born early in the past decade, and involved large groups of people gathering in public places to perform brief acts of entertainment, satire or silliness that appeared spontaneous, but were actually extremely coordinated, usually through social media tools such as Facebook and Twitter. Flash mobs enjoyed an adventurous childhood, taking the form of pillow fights, zombie walks and choreographed dance routines in malls to raise awareness for serious causes or to promote cellphone launches. Showing signs of fatigue and corporate co-option, the health of flash mobs waned, as companies such as Microsoft, Cheetos and even Oprah Winfrey got in on the phenomenon. After thousands of increasingly cute and degrading scenarios, flash mobs finally succumbed to over exposure, strategic marketing and irrelevancy, and died Thursday, Feb. 10, 2011 at 2:30 p.m. with a “SkyTrain Flash Mob Organized to Promote John Furlong’s New Book, Patriot Hearts:

Zzzzzzzzzzz. Apparently, names such as Robertson’s Downfall, Athletes Pillage and Bowl of Green Apples on a White Modern Table were already taken.

Langley’s Bacchus bistro does French cuisine right

Tale of two valleys reveals potential of B.C. wines The Hired Belly with Tim Pawsey

While the Okanagan Valley may well be synonymous with B.C. wine, a few visionaries continue to push the viticultural boundaries, literally. The fertile Creston Valley is home to Baillie Grohman Estate, established by Calgarians Bob Johnson and Petra Flaa. Longtime visitors to the region, they planted a 15.5 acre vineyard (Pinot Gris, Chard. Gewurz and Pinot Noir) on a well-drained, south-facing slope above the Goat River in 2007. Making the wines is Kiwi winemaker Dan Barker, who says the region (which is moderated by Kootenay Lake) reminds him of Central Otago. And yes, the wines are all in screwcap. The winery is named after William Baillie-Grohman, who was among the first to recognize the agricultural potential of the valley when he arrived in 1892 with a vision on a grand scale to build a vast system of dikes. Throughout the Kootenays, as well as the North Okanagan at this time, there was plenty of interest in opening up the area, to fruit farming in particular, and Baillie-Grohmann was successful in getting at least a part of his scheme under way. However, thanks to government hurdles, floods—and most notably, the considerable influence of the CPR—the adventurer and author, who died in 1921, never lived to see the final completion of his “grand scheme” by Kootenay Power & Light in 1930. These are early days, with stillyoung vines, but the initial releases show promise. Much like the local pioneer the name celebrates, this is

Baillie-Grohman 2009 Blancs de Noir (rosé) sports a more off-dry style, ﬂoral and wild berry aromas and generous, dominant strawberry palate ($19.99 and up at private wine stores). Baillie-Grohman Estate Pinot Noir 2009 sports a fruit-forward style, medium bodied with plush palate, red berry notes wrapped in easy tannins ($28.99 PWS). Closer to home, south Langley’s Domaine de Chaberton was established in the late 1970s by the late Claude Violet and his wife Inge. By the early ’90s (when the Okanagan was just beginning to get its act together), the small Fraser Valley winery was producing Bacchus and other lesser-known, early ripening varieties, which were well received on a few local wine lists. Current owners Anthony Cheng

and Vancouver’s Eugene Kwan, who grew up on the East Side, purchased the winery in 2005. They’ve continued to build on the Violet’s success, expanding the plantings of Bacchus, and enhancing the red wine program, which proved to be the biggest challenge over the years. Worth watching out for is the Domaine de Chaberton Bacchus Dry ’09 (layers of honey and mineral hints, rich mouthfeel, lingering spicy and ginger notes). It’s surprisingly complex and well-priced at $14.40, and it will change the way you regard Fraser Valley wines. For a value-priced red, check out the approachable Canoe Cove North Bluffs Red ’08, a primarily Okanagan Merlot blend with easy tannins and bright strawberry, cherry and peppery notes for $12.95. On the top end, Domaine de Chaberton ’07 Syrah yields bright, forward red berries, with firm mid-palate spice wrapped in well-balanced, restrained neutral oak for $29.99. (Quoted are winery prices. Private wine stores may sell for more.) Nothing beats a springtime visit to the tasting room, followed by lunch (Wednesday to Sunday) or dinner (Friday to Saturday) in cozy Zagatrated Bacchus bistro. Executive chef Ashley Chisham’s superlative plates, including smooth, lobster bisque, crispy duck confit and a fluffy chocolate mousse, easily compare with some of the best French cuisine around Vancouver. In the course of three hours, American playwright Tracy Letts gives us addiction, infidelity, suicide, incest, racial intolerance, greed and the groping of a 14-year-old—all served up à la Neil Simon. The fact that August: Osage County won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Play says a lot about American taste and nostal-

gia for the truly great American plays of the past. Letts conflates Martha from Edward Albee’s Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and Mary Tyrone from Eugene O’Neill’s Long Day’s Journey Into Night and puts the resulting character, Violet Weston, into a Tennessee Williams’ month-of-August pressure cooker. And what a piece of work is Violet with her wild swings from razor-sharp verbal ﬂaying to whimpering, poor-me, snivelling. Under Janet Wright’s direction, actor Nora McLellan not only rides this emotional rollercoaster, she runs it. When Violet, sucking on a cigarette or popping tranquilizers by the handful, scans the family living room for someone—anyone—to trash, McLellan is downright hawk-eyed. Continued next page

Continued from page 29 When Violet’s husband Beverly, a marriage-weary, retired professor and sometime poet (ruefully portrayed by Sean Allan), goes missing, the three Weston adult daughters return to Pawhuska, Oklahoma to support their mother. Eldest daughter Barbara (Karin Konoval), recently separated from husband Bill (Andrew Wheeler), hasn’t visited for years and has kept their 14-year-old daughter Jean (Anais West) away from her grandparents—for good reason. As Beverly puts it before he goes AWOL, “My wife takes pills and I drink. That’s the bargain we’ve struck.” Middle daughter Ivy (Wendy Noel), living closer to home, has shouldered the burden of her parents’ decline and has failed, at 40-something, to maintain a committed relationship with anyone, although she’s overly fond of her cousin Charlie (John Murphy). Karen, the youngest (Megan Leitch), is a flake and is now engaged to Steve (Mackenzie Gray), a dope-smoking business-type who has a taste for young flesh. If this reads like a soap opera, it is. It’s laugh-out-loud funny at times, and there are moments when the entire audience shares an “uh-oh” moment as yet another cat claws its way

Nora McLellan, as hawk-eyed matriarch Violet Weston, doesn’t just ride an emotional rollercoaster, she runs it. out of a bag. But there’s not enough here to warrant three hours, and it turns into not exactly a whodunit but more like an “I-dunit.” The production, however, with cutaway two-story interior set by Ted Roberts, is splendid, as are the performances. McLellan is magniﬁcent using her wicked laugh and malevolent grin to advantage. Noel,

Leitch and Konoval bring individuality to each of Violet’s daughters whilst dredging up old sibling rivalries. Konoval puts a chill in the air when she turns into her mother right before our eyes. Susinn McFarlen, as Mattie Fae, is almost as bad, in a funny way, as her sister Violet, and you can feel the audience silently cheering when Mattie Fae’s husband (played by Brian Linds) puts her in her place. Young Anais West looks like she might know a thing or two about teenage attitude she’s so good at it; and Quelemia Sparrow is quietly stoic in the midst of all the sniping going on around her character, First Nations Johnna. The New York Times’ Charles Isherwood had this to say following the Broadway opening: “August is probably the most exciting new American play Broadway has seen in years. Oh, forget probably: It is, flat-out, no asterisks and without qualifications, the most exciting new American play Broadway has seen in years.” Under the direction of Wright (who would have made a damn fine Violet, too), this is a terrific shot at a play that doesn’t deliver anything like the great American playwrights of the past: Albee, Williams, O’Neill or Arthur Miller. Musical trip down memory lane pays tribute to Vancouver’s historic black neighbourhood

Black History Month celebration serves up East End history and all that jazz State of the Arts

Chic Gibson remembers the chicken inns, jazz clubs and “cat houses” that used to populate Vancouver’s East End. So it’s ﬁtting that the 78-year-old Downtown Eastside-raised actor will be master of ceremonies for a musical tribute to Vancouver’s historic black neighbourhood. East End Blues and All That Jazz runs Feb. 18 to 20 at the Firehall Arts Centre with gospel, jazz, blues, stories and images from after the First World War to the 1970s. Pianist and musical director Bill Costin and bassist Timothy Stacey will accompany singers Candus Churchill and Tom Pickett in the show that will celebrate Black History Month with tunes by the likes of Otis Redding, Duke Ellington and Jelly Roll Morton. The late famed Broadway actor, singer and activist Denis Simpson and Vancouver Moving Theatre’s Savannah Walling created the journey down memory lane,

which premiered in 2006. They interviewed old-timers from the neighbourhood including Gibson’s late brother Leonard and his sister Thelma, who sings in East End Blues. By the time they got to Gibson, his siblings had already told all the stories he could have shared, he says. But he adds there are a few things he was able to clear up, like whether Jimi Hendrix actually played at the Smilin’ Buddha. “I said I was there and he worked with the band and yes he did,” Gibson said. “He was a hard-to-get-to-know kid. He was playing a crazy music as we used to call it in those days… This is when he was experimenting. He was experimenting on the people there… He got ﬁred from there.” Gibson recalls the Fountain Chapel on Dunlevy near Prior with its “90 per cent” African-Canadian congregation and its Methodist preachers who were imported from the U.S. “It was very, very Southern and lots of singing and lots of raucous preaching,” Gibson said. He also remembers Hogan’s Alley, which was east of Main Street between Union and Prior, near the east end of the Georgia viaduct.

A proposed and opposed freeway system in the 1970s triggered the demise of the neighbourhood. Gambling houses and brothels, chicken shacks, stables for horses from Hastings Park, and old-fashioned Italian bootleggers populated Hogan’s Alley. “All the good stuff. It was all down in that one little area,” Gibson said. During the Depression, getting by got extra tough. “Women prostituted and did things like that. They needed to put food on the table. They did what they had to do to survive. My mom could cook so she cooked.”

Gibson’s relations had moved from Texas by way of Oklahoma to Winnipeg in 1911. His parents moved the family west from Edmonton and ran the Country Club that eventually moved to 473-475 Powell Street. His mom cooked southern fried chicken, his dad cooked steak and they served up Texas-style hot tamales in a restaurant decorated with red-and-white checked tablecloths and matching gingham curtains. Snippets of interviews with Gibson’s mother are included in the show. Gibson’s cousin Ernie King, who ruled the slide trombone, ran

the Harlem Nocturne jazz club through the 1960s and into the 1970s alongside local jazz hotspots that included the Patricia Hotel and the Mandarin Gardens. These venues are among the places where Gibson, Thelma and Leonard sang and danced in their youth, growing up to be accomplished artists, performing in Vancouver’s first live television show, Bamboula, and touring internationally and across Canada. Leonard became the first black dancer in Canada to train in classical ballet. He choreographed and taught across North America and in Europe. Leonard performed in East End Blues and All that Jazz in 2006. The winner of a Harry Jerome Lifetime Achievement Award from the Toronto-based Black Business and Professional Association died in 2008, so Gibson now fills his brother’s shoes. It’s been a while since the original Jeep Grand Cherokee debuted in 1992, replacing the Grand Wagoneer and smaller Cherokee with a single vehicle.

Continued from previous page Though it pushes the envelope on styling, the Grand Cherokee is still in line with Jeep’s look and feel, making it easily identifiable. Notable design cues include the shallow notch cut into the hood, and the hidden hinge for the flip-up rear window that gives the liftgate an almost seamless look. From the moment you get in, you get a sense of Jeep’s renewed commitment to design and execution. The cabin is beautifully done, with wraparound trim, high-quality plastics, and even an optional wood-accented steering wheel. One minor issue is the plastic panel covering the steering wheel, which leaves some slightly rough edges above the crossbar, right where drivers will tend to hook their thumbs. Performance—Power comes from a 3.6L V6 with 290-hp and 260 lb-ft of torque, or a 5.7L V8 producing 360-hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. For the moment, Jeep has declined to offer a diesel engine. The new V6 is an excellent engine, generating 38 per cent more horsepower and 11 per cent more torque than last year’s V6. However, while there’s lots of power available, the engine lags a bit at low RPMs before full acceleration kicks in. Where handling is concerned, the Grand Cherokee can hold its own against all but the sportiest of crossover SUVs. The steering is predictable, with a hint of understeer, and the road feedback is very good. As a result, the Grand Cherokee is a fun-to-drive and confident SUV in practically any conditions. Off-road enthusiasts have their choice of

is well-designed and easy to read without being too distracting. In-cabin storage space is reasonable, but there’s room for improvement. The glove box is decent, but the centre console and map pockets are on the small side. That said, the rear cargo space is huge, with sides that slope outward to maximize volume and split-folding rear seats that provide a truly ﬂat load ﬂoor. The front doors open almost 90 degrees, which isn’t quite as useful as it sounds. While that’s nice for getting kids and cargo out of the rear doors, it’s easy to accidentally swing the front doors too wide open, in which case they

might hit an adjacent parked car. While the Grand Cherokee may not include a standard sunroof like the 4Runner, it does at least offer a choice. Unlike most vehicles, which offer either a traditional, front-only sunroof or a dual-pane, panoramic roof, Jeep lets owners pick between the two options. Features—Starting at $37,995, the Grand Cherokee is available in Laredo, Laredo X, Limited, and Overland trim levels, and tops out at $49,995. Standard equipment includes ABS, traction control, stability control, cruise control, air conditioning, tilt/telescope steering, remote keyless entry, power-adjustable driver’s seat, six-speaker CD/MP3 stereo, and front/side-curtain airbags. Features available as options or standard on upper trim levels include Xenon headlamps, sunroof, CommandView dual-pane sunroof, rain-sensing wipers, navigation system with backup camera, backup sensors, remote starter, heated and ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, and upgraded nine-speaker audio systems with hard-drive storage. Jeep also sells a number of off-road and towing packages. Fuel efﬁciency for the 3.6L engine is rated at 13.0L/100km in the city and 8.9L/100km on the highway. Thumbs up—Superb design; thoughtful interior; conﬁdent driving characteristics. Thumbs down—Minimal features on base model.
