Homeless man dies in PoCo John Kurucz jkurucz@thenownews.com

Police have ruled out foul play in the death of a 43-yearold homeless man, whose body was found Sunday in Port Coquitlam. Coquitlam RCMP Const. Kristina Biro said the man’s body was found by a passerby on a pathway near Lougheed Highway and Shaughnessy Street at about 8:15 a.m. “We don’t have any reason to suspect at this point that this is a suspicious death,” Biro said, adding that police are not releasing the man’s name until members of his family have been notified. “The coroner also attended the scene and they’re continuing their investigation at this point, and an autopsy has been ordered.” Though police aren’t releasing a name, Hope For Freedom Society executive director Rob Thiessen identified the man as Irvin Wickens, whom Thiessen and other homeless outreach workers had consistent contact with over the past four years. “I initially didn’t know who it was when I first got wind of it,” Thiessen told The NOW. “I guessed at the time that it was probably Irvin. I made the unfortunate prediction a week ago, basically saying Irvin would be the next guy to die out there. It was just the way things were going for him — he looked like a man who was in a fairly serious decline. It wasn’t just me. The outreach team also believed if things continued the way they were, he wasn’t long for this world.” Media reports suggested Wickens’s death could be attributed to the cold weather or a lack of shelter space. There never seems to be enough to go around at this time of year. Days away from Christmas, TriCities residents know how much the holidays can cost a family. Between toys and gifts and goodies for all, a dollar can go quickly — let alone those one-cent coins. But pennies can pack a lot of power when donated to The NOW’s Pennies for Presents campaign.

The fundraiser, in its 21st year, helps the SHARE Family & Community Services Society buy gifts for tweens and teens who might otherwise go without at this time of year. While a penny may not seem like much, the donations add up. The Pennies brigade brought in the latest round of buckets to Boulevard Casino for counting, and came away with two batches worth $887.44 and $1,241.16.

That brings the total to $4,920.95 — well below last year’s record-busting $18,000. Everyone here at The NOW encourages Tri-Cities residents to donate what they can — even if it’s a single copper — to Pennies for Presents, which wraps up on Dec. 31. Here is a list of drop-off locations throughout the Tri-Cities that will take pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, loonies, toonies and any bills residents

Tri-Cities Homelessness Task Group chair Sandy Burpee refuted those theories. “Based on his underlying health issues, I wouldn’t at all be surprised to find out that it wasn’t hypothermia. It wasn’t the lack of shelter. It was just a health problem that was caused or exacerbated by the consumption of alcohol,” Burpee said. “I will be surprised if it’s exposure — it wasn’t cold enough,” Thiessen added. Thiessen said the society’s cold wet weather mat program had more than enough space — it was only one-third full — to accommodate Wickens on Saturday night. He added that Wickens had accessed the program in the past, though he was recently turned away for violating the shelter program’s rules.

“We barred him from coming in with any alcohol, and he didn’t like that,” Thiessen said. Thiessen pointed to a lack of available services — detox treatments, assisted care and a shelter — within the Tri-Cities as contributing factors to Wickens’s condition prior to his death. “This was a guy that needed assisted care. He needed someone to take care of him, and there just aren’t very many places around for that,” Thiessen said, adding that the Hope for Freedom Society had helped Wickens out by offering him bus tickets to a Maple Ridge-based shelter as recently as last weekend, though Wickens turned down the offer. Two days later, he was dead. “I was certainly very distressed to learn that Irvin had died,” Burpee said. “He is pretty well-known to outreach workers. It was very sad to hear that someone died alone.”

Thiessen said Wickens was badly beaten up three or four weeks ago by a group of young people who target the homeless. He didn’t know the extent of Wickens’s injuries at the time, but did say he was hospitalized. “There’s a gang of youths that cruises around this area that do that from time to time. Apparently it’s the same group. I wish someone would catch them. There’s some sick kids out there who get a bang out of beating on homeless people,” Thiessen said. He added that Hope for Freedom Society workers recently helped Wickens get a provincial disability designation, which would have helped him access a treatment facility in Surrey that could cater to his needs. That facility, however, would have required Wickens to go through a detox treatment. “He had tried before and not lasted,” Thiessen said.

Now that radio host Christy Clark has officially announced she’s in the BC Liberal leadership race, former Tri-Cities MLA Harry Bloy has thrown his support behind the latest contender. “I think Christy has the experience to do it. She’s from outside the present caucus, but she’s visionary,” said Bloy, who is now MLA for Burnaby-Lougheed. “She’s going to look at things differently.” Clark made the announcement about her leadership ambitions on Dec. 8, although there was widespread speculation beforehand that she would run. She was also polling ahead of the other Liberal contenders before she even announced she was in the race. “It’s because Christy has a relationship to people. People like her,” Bloy said. Clark was born and raised in Burnaby. She graduated from a local high school and went

She left politics in 2005, saying she wanted to spend more time with her family. In 2007, she started The Christy Clark Show on CKNW Radio. The keystone in her current campaign is “putting families first,” and she is considering a free vote in the legislature on the HST. Other leadership hopefuls include Mike de Jong, George Abbott, Kevin Falcon and Moira Stilwell. The Liberals are scheduled to elect a new leader on Feb. 26. “I think she’s a great person,” Bloy said of Clark. “I think she’ll make a great premier. The biggest fight is to win the leadership of the party.” Both current Liberal MLAs in the Tri-Cities — Iain Black (Port Moody-Coquitlam) and Doug Horne (Coquitlam-Burke Mountain) — announced earlier this month they plan to back Falcon’s bid for party leadership.

Costly cases or Evergreen Line? Re: “The system isn’t working,” letter to the editor, Wednesday, Dec. 15. I completely agree with writer Steve Mancinelli’s remarks. I would also add the judicial system, which financially is completely out of control and needs to be revamped to meet taxpayers’ requirements. The cost of the Air India and Pickton trials, just to name a few, are the tip of the iceberg, with many more costing the To The taxpayer mega bucks. With public (not lawyer) input, I think we can still have justice but at a more reasonable price. To speed things up, why can’t the courts start at 8

a.m. or earlier and sit later at night — or even better, sit on Saturdays? In the private sector, if there is more work available, overtime or working longer is natural. Why not the courts? Who regulates lawyers’ fees in these trials where the only people making money are the lawyers? There doesn’t seem to be any public input into limiting fees in these trials. As an example, the excess spent on the Air India and Pickton trials alone Editor could have funded the Evergreen Line. We as a society have got our priorities wrong, and it is time that we woke up. The cuteness factor

ay “cute kids,” and the images most people conjure up are of babies, toddlers and maybe preschool-aged children. Tweens and young teenagers — although still definitely children — just don’t come to mind. Maybe it’s because many of these older kids are in various awkward stages that include being sullen and moody, full of attitude or just plain know-it-alls. Their relative lack of cuteness explains why the area devoted to kids their age at the SHARE toy bank is nearly empty. Take a visit to the Port Moody warehouse SHARE uses to sort its toys, which go to kids whose families can’t afford to buy Christmas presents, and you’ll see tables corresponding to various age groups. The tables for babies, three- to five-year-olds and six- to eight-year-olds are overflowing. There’s one for boys and one for girls in each age group, and dolls, fire trucks and other toys spill over onto the floor. Turn around, though, and the tables for older kids are half empty. SHARE says kids that age just don’t factor into most people’s idea of who needs Christmas presents. The thing is, it’s probably older kids — who are more aware of what poverty is and more likely to compare themselves to their peers — who feel the lack of a gift at Christmas more deeply than their younger siblings. That’s what makes the Pennies for Presents program — The NOW’s annual fundraiser on behalf of SHARE — so important. All money donated goes toward buying gifts for older kids whose parents can’t afford to. So please, if you’re able to, help out with pennies or other donations. There are more than a dozen drop-off sites in the Tri-Cities (see story on Page 1). Donations are lower than at this time last year, but with your help all Tri-Cities kids, no matter how old, can have something under the tree this Christmas.

Government and Service Employees’ Union, Heyman is a good orator who performed well when the BCGEU was dealing with big cutbacks during the Liberals’ first term. He’s currently executive director of the Sierra Club, which cuts him some street cred with the environmentalists in the party. But he’s still a bit of an outsider, and private sector union members in the NDP can’t be counted on to necessarily support a former public sector union boss. Harry Lali — While at first blush it would seem Lali is at best a long shot, keep in the mind that the NDP will pick its next leader using the one member/one vote system, which makes the ability of signing up new members a critical strength. The Indo-Canadian community, for example, is passionate about politics and getting involved in campaigns, which may give Lali a significant advantage over the other candidates. He’s known for his aggressive manner, which can be a turnoff for some members, and he was also one of the notorious Baker’s Dozen of dissidents, which will alienate him from some people. But he’s also fairly popular in the legislature, and he may be the only candidate from outside the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, which would give him regional strength others may lack. So that’s the early assessment. Other candidates will no doubt step forward in the coming weeks, but don’t assume anyone has the magic touch when it comes to healing the internal strife in the party.

Sixteen too young to vote How old should you be to vote? This question has been introduced into the provincial Liberal leadership debate, where it is suggested that as a way to increase voter turnout we lower the voting age to 16. Part of the argument is that encouraging young people to vote will “get them in the habit.” But getting to vote (maybe) one election early isn’t going to build a habit in the first place, and I question that this is even a desirable goal. I want people to vote because they are prepared to inform themselves and make conscious decisions, not by some unconscious reflex. We have long recognized that we need to distinguish adults and minors for various purposes. Thus, we have an age of consent, an age to be able to drive and such, and an age where a person is legally an adult. We hold voting to be of this last category — requiring adulthood and the competency to be fully responsible for one’s own actions. Yes, there are some who aren’t really ready then, and others who are ready sooner. In general, we can’t assess this on an individual basis, so we use age as a proxy. It’s a bit rough, but it’s the best we’ve got at the moment. And, roughly, 16-year-olds are still figuring out who they are, how the world works and how they fit into it and, while intelligent and capable, their cognitive development is still a work in progress. Lacking experience in the basics of earning a living, paying the rent, taking on a mortgage or figuring out how to feed a family — my own feeling is that, broad brush strokes again, they don’t yet have enough context. We need to look at low voter turnout as an indication of an underlying problem, not the problem itself. Artificially inflating the numbers won’t address this, just mask it. We need

to ask why, when around the world so many risk death, torture or prison for a chance to vote, why do so few bother here? If it matters to them — at great personal, even mortal, risk — they’ll vote; no bother. How do we make it matter to them? Too many people don’t understand how our system works, nor how they can participate all along the way. Many feel that if their choice doesn’t win, their vote was wasted and that they’re not then represented; a perceptual error, I think. There are many things we could do, such as ongoing workshops and public education campaigns to foster better understanding and engagement. And I also think that moving from first-pastthe-post elections to a preferential ballot system such as instant runoff To The voting (IRV) would help a lot. But the Liberals have some self-destructive policies of their own and have muddied up their waters to get the NDP back into the derby. Enter Christy Clark. You remember her? Part of the cabal that stabbed Gordon Wilson, the man who created the present-day Liberals, in the back. She then thought politics weren’t for her and decided to become a radio talk show host. Clark is now back-tracking and double-talking as she throws her hat into the ring. She has always been a very vocal supporter of the HST. Now she throws her party on its ear by saying they should have a vote in the legislature on the HST. B.C. politicians seem to have a pathological need for controEditor versy and turmoil. If the NDP and Liberals cannot run their own parties with strong leadership and policies, how in the hell can we trust them to run the province? We have a sad state of affairs to deal with. Wacky world of B.C. politics Anywhere else in North America, the analogy used is that an election will be a good old-fashioned horse race. Not so in B.C. The politicians here engage in a demolition derby, destroying both opponents and teammates. Whoever is left standing at the end is the winner. What is really interesting is the fact that the NDP had a real fighting chance of winning the next election, even with Carole James. Not being a party to make things easier for themselves, they not only ousted James unceremoniously, they poisoned their own chances by carrying on an ugly in-house battle.

Wood smoke is a hazard Re: “Thanks to store staff, customers,” letter to the editor, Wednesday, Dec. 15. I read with interest Brie Oishi’s letter regarding her reaction to wood smoke and cigarette smoke while she was shopping at a store in Port Coquitlam. Sadly, wood smoke injuries are more common than is generally known. This I know from personal experience and in assisting others who are exposed to smoke billowing

from old chimneys — smoke that collects in neighbourhoods and usually picks one nice wee corner to build up dangerous levels of noxious compounds. One particularly bad case of wood smoke poisoning in Port Coquitlam is now entering its third month. Dangerous concentrations are depositing large amounts of soot on the back porch, entering into the house and causing fatigue and sore throats in a man, woman and child at the victims’ home. I have attended a number of times and written and presented evidence to Mayor Greg Moore, Metro Vancouver and Fraser Health. Mayor Moore, would you kindly acknowledge receipt of my letter to you and follow-up e-mail and inform your constituents in Port Coquitlam what steps you are taking to protect this hard-working family from being victimized by a neighbour burning wet wood through an old chimney fireplace? Two men arrested

Two Coquitlam men have been arrested for gun trafficking, after police seized a semi-automatic pistol and a machine gun, as well as some cocaine. The men, identified as 27year-old Johnathan Thomas Duguay and 23-year-old Mathew James Milando, face a number of firearms-related charges. Duguay is also charged with offences under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act. The four-month-long investigation began in September, according to a Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit press release, and spanned multiple communities within Metro Vancouver. While Duguay and Milando had no specific links to any particular criminal enterprise, investigators say the weapons could have ended up in the hands of gangs or organized crime groups. This case brings the total number of firearms seized provincially by CFSEU investigators to more than 130.

Three face charges

Three men, including one from Coquitlam, are in custody and a fourth is being sought after an 11-month joint investigation by Lower Mainland police forces. owntown Kampala is a sea of chaos where boda boda motorcycle taxis and minivan matatus kick up waves of dust and pollution as they roar along the potholed roads. The sidewalks overflow with people; some hurry to work in business suits, talking on cellular phones, while others sit patiently on woven mats, waiting for someone to buy a candy or newspaper. Then there are the ones who are not so lucky. Uganda has a growing problem with the number of street kids who haunt its sidewalks and in the evenings, keep to the shadows. These forgotten children are often orphaned or abandoned and some come together to protect each other, forming their own family units. Unfortunately, there are no parents to look out for these children and often the acting “parents” haven’t even reached puberty. These are invisible children, whom people walk past, often ignoring them in the same way people may ignore a panhandler on Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, as if by ignoring them one doesn’t have to face their reality. I was heartbroken the first time I came face to face with the bleak existence of street kids in Uganda’s capital. I am ashamed to say that I froze and then walked away, too overwhelmed by the sight. The image of that child still haunts me. I can never go back and relive that moment, but I have learned from it. Kampala is a long way from the green landscape of North Vancouver where I grew up, and it wasn’t long before I found myself facing another street kid. This time I walked straight into a second-hand clothing store and bought her something to wear to replace the tattered shirt she had on. The delight in her eyes as she held that Tshirt warmed my heart. She held it gently to her chest as if it would disappear if she let go. I have Carli Travers to thank for inspiring me to be more than just a passive observer. I came to Uganda in October to work as a community education officer in a place called Namugongo, in Kampala’s urban sprawl. What brought me here was a five-month internship through Douglas College, funded by the Canadian International Development Agency. I knew Travers’ story and finally got the opportunity to meet her family when I began teaching literacy at a teen pregnancy crisis centre next door to her home. When Travers, a Port Coquitlam resident, came to live in Uganda in 2007 and saw the destitution of the street kids, she couldn’t walk away. Coming in contact with a family of street kids, Travers did an extraordinary thing. Instead of buying food or clothes, or giving them money, Travers and her husband Robert Birungi took them home. At just 23 years of

age, she became a mother to six street children and three years later she is now mother to 16. Sometimes life puts you exactly where you are meant to be. That’s what happened to Travers back in 2006 and the domino effect of her life journey has both inspired and humbled me. In 2006, Travers came to Uganda from Vancouver on a two-month Douglas College internship and less than a year later she was back to stay. Simply put, Uganda had stolen her heart. It wasn’t just the warmth of the people or her love for her husband, Robert; it was a feeling of purpose and a desire to have a positive impact on the world around her. Today Travers and Birungi lead by example. They have three children of their own and have 13 adopted children from age two to 14. Together they have created a non-profit organization, Carli’s Kids, which runs a school for 90 kids in one of Kampala’s low-income neighbourhoods, and they are building a children’s village called Abetavu, which means “haven,” 30 kilometres outside of Kampala. Their dream is to see their children become the leaders of tomorrow. Once completed, Abetavu will become a safe haven for up to 200 abandoned, abused and neglected children. It will also hold satellite homes for grandmothers caring for their orphaned or abandoned grandchildren. Travers and Birungi have made it their mission to bring hope, love and opportunity to Uganda’s forgotten children. It’s working. While visiting Travers and Birungi the other day, I sat outside on a mat under a tree, enjoying a soft afternoon breeze. By my side were Douglas, Deus, Benjamin, Martin, Elijah, Sandra, Marjorie, Vanessa, Christie, Godance, Julianna and Esther, and in my lap lay Codrine. I asked them what they want to be when they grow up. I was truly inspired by their responses. These children whose lives were once hopeless now aspire to be pilots, teachers, nurses and doctors. The most touching was Marjorie, who will do anything as long as she can be near mummy forever. After seeing these kids flourish under Travers’ and Birungi’s watchful eyes I could feel my heart fill with hope and optimism about the future. I have no doubt in my mind that their dreams will come true. Not only are Travers and Birungi role models to their children, they are my role models too. To realize their vision for the future, Travers and Birungi will need help. Ten dollars will buy a school uniform. Twenty-five dollars enables Carli’s Kids to provide a grandmother and the seven abandoned grandchildren she cares for with their basic necessities for a week. Registration now open for libraries’ spelling bee Spelling enthusiasts who are in grades 4 or 5 are invited to showcase their spelling skills by competing in the Tri-Cities libraries’ fifthannual spelling bee. The libraries are accepting registrations for four spelling bees to be held Jan. 29, 2011 at the Port Moody Public Library, Coquitlam Public Library (Poirier and City Centre branches) and Terry Fox Library in Port Coquitlam. The top five spellers from each bee will advance to the final round at Port Coquitlam’s Wilson Centre on Feb. 5, where they will compete for spelling supremacy. Medals will be handed out to the top three

finishers. Early registration is recommended as space is limited to a maximum of 20 competitors per bee. Those interested can register in person at their city library throughout December. The goal of the spelling bee is to engage young people in positive competition while having fun, according to a press release. • 1440 Cambridge Dr. — More than 30,000 lights, an electric train, a large nativity scene, five geese pulling a sleigh and more. Donations collected for BC Children’s Hospital. Open from 5:30 to 11 p.m. daily. • 646 Claremont St. — More than 7,000 lights, many strung up on trees and flashing in tune with Christmas carols, and a complete nativity scene featuring Santa, Mrs. Clause and friends. Display is open from 5 to 10 p.m. daily through Jan. 7. Donations collected for the Knights of Columbus charities. Come up the driveway for the best view. • 678 Folsom St. — More than 50,000 computer-controlled lights twinkle, dance and move in patterns that take up to 15 minutes to complete. Santa waves from the rooftop, and a herd of moving reindeer, as well as shooting stars, Frosty the snowman and a 16-foot-long Santa train, entertain.

• 806 Seymour St. — Known as the Grinch House, this home is well-known for animated characters, including Charlie Brown and friends and Frosty the Snowman. Viewing runs from 4 to 11 p.m. through Jan. 4.

Drinking and driving continues to take a deadly toll on our roads. In an average year: • Police attend approximately 5,600 motor vehicle crashes where alcohol is involved. Other drinking and driving stats to keep in mind: • Most alcohol-related crashes (61 per cent) occur on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. • Almost half (48 per cent) take place between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m.

Talons stall at Challenge Kevin Cawthra sports@thenownews.com The Gleneagle Talons welcomed eight teams to their home court last week for a prechristmas tournament called the Talons Challenge — and a challenge it was. A sluggish start in the bronze medal match Friday put the Talons behind the eight ball, giving Byrne Creek a boost to a 52-40 win and third place. Gleneagle did make a game of it by trading shots and staying within striking distance, until the Bulldogs’ Paul Mallari hit a clutch trey that set them on their way. It was a repeat of the previous game, where the home squad couldn’t keep pace with Enver Creek in a 68-47 semifinal contest, despite getting a game-high 18 points from Turell Scott. Zac Usherwood,

who was later named as a tournament all star, chipped in 16 points, while point guard Steven Haer left early after rolling his ankle in the first half. Gleneagle came into the tournament brewing with confidence after destroying Fraser Height’s Secondary School 103-44 Monday night. They began by blasting Lord Tweedsmuir 75-30 to kickstart the tourney. After losing Usherwood due to a sore foot, Gleneagle’s bench rose to the challenge. The Talons started with a 10-0 run in the first quarter and stayed ahead the rest of the way. Two other Coquitlam teams joined in the festivities, although with less festive results. Pinetree came out flying and firing, taking a handy 15-6 lead early in their opener only to fall 79-70 to Byrne Creek. With a never-say-never

attitude, the Bulldogs clawed their way back against Pinetree and took control of the game. In the other game, Centennial struggled against Argyle in a 97-55 loss. On Thursday, Pinetree crossed paths with city rival Centennial and cruised to a 8255 decision. Grant Klebanov hit a clutch three in the fourth quarter to cap it. In the final day of the tournament, Centennial was looking to avenge its two losses, this time against Lord Tweedsmuir. The Cents gave it a valiant charge before falling short 66-56. In the consolation final, Pinetree’s sharp shooters came up significantly cooler than the previous outing, getting knocked 67-47 by Hugh Boyd. Taking tourney bragging rights was provincial honourable mention Enver Creek Cougars, who bested Argyle 77-60 in the final.

It’s been a holly, jolly December for the Coquitlam Express. The junior A hockey club entered the Christmas break on the heels of a 4-2 win on Friday over the Quesnel Millionaires, giving them eight points in their last five games. Michael Krgovich set the tone against the Millionaires, cashing in a pair and setting up Mark Begert’s empty net tally. After Malcolm McKinney opened the scoring 1:26 into the game, Krgovich upped

Coquitlam’s lead by banging in a Garrick Perry rebound. While Quesnel kicked off the second with a powerplay goal, Krvogich restored the twogoal lead by deflecting in Cole Gelley’s point shot. The Millionaires continued to demonstrate resilience, making it 3-2 on Skyler Smutek’s powerplay marker midway through the second, and pressed for the equalizer. A huge toe save by Khaleed Devji, off a streaking Smutek, proved crucial in the win.

Begert, 17, finished with a goal and an assist, giving the rookie blueliner five points in his last three games — after starting the season off pointless in 33 games. Krgovich, meanwhile, has tallied eight goals and 10 assists in 17 games since arriving in a trade last month. The Express, currently tied with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs in sixth spot with a 14-15-1-8 record, take on the Bulldogs on Tuesday, 7 p.m. at the Sports Centre.

Huggon salvages point for first-place Wolves

There’s something about the Coquitlam Metro-Ford Wolves that brings out the best in ICSF Inter. The Surrey-based Vancouver Metro Soccer League premier side played the league-leading Wolves to a 1-1 draw on Saturday — the second standstill between the two teams this season. Inter grabbed an early lead when Michael Nonni buried one behind Coquitlam keeper

The Wolves stepped it up in search of the equalizer and got it in the 30th minute, as Russel Huggon converted a fine cross from Alfredo Valente for his league-leading 10th tally of the year. Both netminders were full marks for the point. The Wolves, at 12-4-1, enter the holiday break with a two-point hold on first place over Surrey United.

There was plenty of charity to go around at this year’s Tournament for Emily in Port Coquitlam. The senior girls basketball tourney, sponsored and run by the Riverside Rapids, witnessed the host team post a clean 4-0 run through the three-day series. More impressive, the tournament raised approximately $6,800 for B.C. Children’s Hospital. And for the first time in its six years, the series featured games at fellow PoCo schools Terry Fox and Archbishop Carney. The No. 3-ranked Rapids’ sweep included an opening night 72-70 thriller over No. 2-rated W.J. Mouat, followed by another tight one, 7972 over Calgary’s Western Canada Secondary. Riverside had an easier time of it, relatively speaking, against ninth-ranked Kitsilano, topping them 78-53. They then closed out the weekend with a 74-65 decision over No. 5-seeded Claremont.

The slate of results is likely to shake up the next rankings, as Mouat finished 2-2, including an overtime loss to Claremont, while the Victoria school finished 3-1. Centennial, rated eighth overall, were edged 71-59 by honourable mention Elgin Park, then 70-51 by Kitsilano. Western Canada clobbered them 82-57, before the Cents bounced back to close out with a 75-32 victory over Penticton. The unranked Terry Fox Ravens posted an impressive run of 3-1, trumping Heritage Park 44-40, Fleetwood Park 62-51 and Carney 47-28, with their lone setback a 51-27 loss to Elgin Park. The unranked Gleneagle Talons delivered a solid showing for their 1-3 record, beating Penticton 41-29, before dropping games to Elgin Park, Chilliwack and Heritage Park. Carney, meanwhile, finished 0-4, with a couple of close losses to Penticton (50-32) and Fleetwood (38-29).
