Pennies for Presents campaign launched Simone Blais sblais@thenownews.com It’s record busting time. The NOW is all hot to trot despite this cold weather, because today (Wednesday) marks the official launch of the 21st annual Pennies for Presents campaign to benefit the SHARE Family & Community Services Society. And this year the hope is to smoke all previous fundraising totals. “Last year’s Pennies for Presents campaign raised more than $18,000, setting a new record in generosity. Having drop-off sites throughout the Tri-Cities made it easier for residents to donate, and with sites in every community again this year, they won’t have to travel far. We’re ready to try for another record,” NOW editor Leneen Robb said.

“Our Pennies partners embraced the campaign with open arms, and it made a world of difference,” NOW publisher Brad Alden said. “Every cent goes to helping local families, so we can’t wait to see the results of this year’s campaign.” The drive behind the Pennies for Presents campaign has remained constant throughout more than two decades of fundraising. Many generous Tri-Cities residents looking to help those in need at Christmas buy toys for tots and young children, rather than gifts for older kids. SHARE uses Pennies for Presents proceeds to purchase gifts for teens and tweens in the community who would otherwise go without. The need is not abating. Heather Scott,

Once again, The NOW has partnered with local organizations that understand how the value of hundreds of thousands of pennies can add up to make a huge difference to local youth. The Coquitlam RCMP, Port Moody Police Department, Coquitlam Fire and Rescue, Port Moody Fire and Rescue, Port Coquitlam Fire and Emergency Services, The Bay and Scotiabank have all jumped on board as Pennies for Presents partners, welcoming donations of coins and bills from the community. The 2009 total came in at $15,178.75, followed by a matching grant from Scotiabank that tipped the scales to a record-shattering $18,053.57.

SHARE’s development director, said the agency is planning for a 15-per-cent increase in registrations from families needing help this year. “We’re thrilled to have Pennies for Presents back again,” Scott said. Last year, SHARE gave gifts to 1,623 children from 823 families. Given the increased demand for services at the food bank, staff are preparing to provide for 1,900 children from 900 different families. “The need is definitely there again this year,” Scott said. “We just believe and know that the community will once again help others around them this Christmas. Homes coming to Dominion Triangle? Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com Port Coquitlam is one step closer to amending its official community plan to allow residential development in the Dominion Triangle. The city is considering changing 8.5 hectares (21 acres) of light industrial land to allow for the building of up to 600 residential units. Rezoning applications would need to allow light industrial development in advance or simultaneously in the area, according to a city report. Residential development applicants would also need to integrate sustainability features, dedicate a usable neighbourhood park, improve off-site sidewalks and protect remaining park reserves. Spending could have saved lives Re: “Pickton case cost more than $103 million,” NOW website, Tuesday, Nov. 16. As someone who spent more years than I care to remember working for underfunded social agencies that provide support for women and children, I read the news stories about the costs of the Pickton case with mixed emotions. Sadness for the victims and their families was quickly followed by rage — if even a portion of the money spent on a To The police investigation and trial had been used to actually support women on the Downtown Eastside, lives would have been saved. Just think what $100 million could have done in areas such as drug rehab, counselling, job training and safe housing.

Over and over we learn that nearly all women who end up in the sex trade were abused as children. I keep thinking what a few million of those dollars could do today to protect children. As has been frequently pointed out, no little girl says she wants to grow up to be a prostitute. But, as usual, we’re willing to pony up the cash after the fact, not when it can actually do some good. I hope the investigation and trial Editor brought families of victims some closure, but I know that more than anything, they want this never to happen to someone else’s daughter, sister, mother or friend. For PM, power has proven irresistible

here was a time when Stephen Harper talked a big game when it came to democracy. Back when he led the upstart Reform Party, Harper didn’t miss an opportunity to denounce the unelected Senate as an antidemocratic relic of the 19th century. The party wasn’t called Reform for nothing. But in classic Tolkienesque fashion, the ring of power proved irresistible to Harper once he got his hands on it. Last week, Harper used the One Chamber to Rule Them All to kill a climate change bill that had been approved by a 13-vote majority in the House of Commons. Harper may say the greenhouse gas reduction targets were “irresponsible” or “flawed,” but he doesn’t get to make that call. The fact remains that Canada’s elected representatives approved the law by a comfortable margin. To use his new-found Senate majority, that 19th century relic, to quash it is the height of hypocrisy. It’s worth noting that for all Harper’s protests of Senate Liberals dragging their feet on important legislation, the Grits never actually killed off a Commons-approved government bill. In fact, the sober second look has only led to a thumbs-down twice in the past 50 years. Coming less than a year after Harper simply padlocked the House of Commons to avoid inconvenient votes, this wielding of the Senate veto raises an important question about his respect for our nation’s institutions — and for democracy itself. He’s come a long way from direct democracy advocate to autocratic prime minister. Power has proven more precious than principle.

On my way out of the room after James’s speech I found myself suddenly in a near-physical encounter between Simons and fellow NDP MLA Mable Elmore (Vancouver Kensington). Simons was leaning into Elmore, jabbing his finger at her, and loudly saying over and over again: “Do you want to fight?” He suddenly saw me, and slunk away. Oh, what a happy bunch! The magnitude of this problem for the NDP cannot be underestimated. At some point, James is going to have to take action. I can’t see all 12 leaving, but it is conceivable that Conroy, Popham, Routley, Simons and MacDonald (they appear to be the angriest as well as being the closest to Simpson) leave and sit with their one-time colleague from the Cariboo. Again, all it takes is for three of them to join Simpson to gain official party status. B.C. has long been a two-party province, with a third party popping up with scant representation from time to time. But we may be on the verge of a huge political realignment. The two dominant parties are fracturing right now and if they don’t end their internal strife (and the NDP has the biggest problem on this front), they’re going to find one or two new competitors suddenly appearing on the scene. At our meeting we passed the following resolution: “That … both municipalities share a common voice in recommending that TransLink seek funding to match the federal grant contribution of $65 million for the United Boulevard project as well as to continue working with senior levels of government, and other affected stakeholders, in regards to collectively resolving transportation network requirements and connections in proximity of Highway 1 and the Brunette interchange.” In the first case, the intent was to ensure that the interests of New Westminster residents were protected and, in both, that funding is available if and when sign-off is achieved for a United Boulevard extension. TransLink is currently holding public consultation meetings in Editor New Westminster and Coquitlam to gather feedback from citizens in both communities on several United Boulevard extension options. The City of New Westminster has encouraged residents and stakeholders to attend these open houses to express their views on TransLink plans. Once that consultation is complete, New Westminster council will review the results carefully before making a decision to support or reject TransLink’s proposal on a United Boulevard extension. While Coquitlam certainly deals with its fair share of traffic, by virtue of our location at the centre of Metro Vancouver, New Westminster is forced to bear an undue burden with literally hundreds of thousands of regional commuter vehicles passing through on our streets each and every day. In light of this reality, New Westminster city council will examine any transportation project proposed within our boundaries very carefully, taking into account the views of our residents as well as the impact

Re: “Agreement on United Boulevard plans,” Wednesday, To The Nov. 17. The title of your story on the current status of TransLink’s proposals for a United Boulevard extension project leaves the impression that the City of New Westminster has given approval for specific plans to proceed. This is not the case. In 2007, New Westminster city council provided conditional support to TransLink’s funding application to Transport Canada’s Asia-Pacific Gateway Program for the United Boulevard Extension component of the North Fraser Perimeter Road (NFPR). Attached to that conditional support was a series of requirements that New Westminster council must see fulfilled should a United Boulevard extension project move ahead. Fast-forward to July 2010 when City of New Westminster and Coquitlam councils met to discuss mutual concerns and priorities regarding TransLink’s proposed NFPR plans as well as Province of B.C. plans for the Highway 1/Port Mann project in the area of the Brunette

Based on the first round of TransLink consultations, New Westminster is nowhere near as happy with the plans. Coquitlam Mayor Richard Stewart says he wants to find “alternative routes” for traffic other than his city’s main streets. Sorry, mayor, but when your proposed alternative is New Westminster’s main and residential streets, at the cost of industrial and residential land base in New Westminster, you might find agreement on this side of the Brunette River a little hard to come by. Gaby Davis Christmas market helps families Who knew Christmas shopping could help families affected by childhood cancer? The Gaby Davis Foundation will be hosting its inaugural Christmas market at River Springs Recreation Centre in Port Coquitlam on Dec. 4, to benefit the foundation’s work of supporting parents and families impacted by a diagnosis of childhood cancer. Open to the public from 1 to 4 p.m., the market will feature a host of vendors from local small businesses and home-based businesses offering a variety of wares. Pampered Chef, Original Basket Boutique, Lily’s Jewelry, Creative Memories and more will be available. The afternoon will also feature a Christmas craft for the kids. River Springs Recreation Centre is located at 1950 Lodge Dr. The Gaby Davis Foundation was has provided gifts and financial assistance to 24 families since its inception in October 2008. “Gaby packs,” or backpacks filled with gifts and gift cards for gas, groceries and other practical items, are just one of the ways the foundation helps. With 150 families in B.C. facing a childhood cancer diagnosis each year, there’s been no shortage of applications for assistance. The foundation is also seeking volunteers to help with organizing events and other roles. A few people who can give a few hours on a regular basis are needed to plan events, promote the work that the charity does and to help with Gaby packs. ‘Wilderness Dweller’ to speak at Port Moody library Popular author and wilderness dweller Chris Czajkowski will return to the Port Moody Public Library on Tuesday, Nov. 30 to present a portrait of her life in the remote mountains of the Chilcotin. Czajkowski lives in Nuk Tessli near the southern tip of Tweedsmuir Provincial Park. Very little can be grown in this region, and almost nothing can be harvested from the wild. The nearest supermarket is hundreds of kilometres away. During her slideshow and commentary on her new book, A Wilderness Dweller’s Cookbook, Czajkowski will share her recipes for the “Best Bread in the World,” made in a stone oven, and other favourites such as “British Dumplings” and “Spotted

thought that my old tin of coins was worth so much! I can ﬁnally afford to renovate my kitchen”. Perry Bruce continued, “Canadian coins prior to 1967, and American coins prior to 1964 are all made with silver, and we have noticed a large increase of customers coming to the Roadshow with coins and cashing them in for their silver value”. Cross-river rivals set for semifinal big showdown That Centennial-Terry Fox rivalry is going to do its best to thaw out this November chill. Both the Centennial Centaurs and Terry Fox Ravens marched past their opponents in convincing fashion on the weekend, earning a Saturday rematch of the battle of District 43. The result is the current undefeated No. 1-ranked team in B.C. against the defending AAA champs — a sure-fire recipe for gridiron pyrotechnics. While the two squads will zero in on doing what it takes to advance to the B.C. final, both are well-versed in what obstacle the other will provide. “There’s no doubt in my mind that familiarity on both sides is going to play a factor,” said Centennial head coach Ryk Piche. “I’m going up against my former coaches, coaches who I respect a great deal. You see the intensity on the field really evolves from some of the people who lead it.” The Cents spotted Kelowna 13 points before rolling to a 40-13 win in the Okanagan on Saturday, led by quarterback Bobby Pospischil. The veteran pivot racked up 115 yards on 15 carries despite the snow to score two touchdowns, and passed for another two to finish with 124 yards through the air on seven completions. Terry Fox, meanwhile, blitzed Notre Dame 34-7 at UBC’s Thunderbird Stadium, the site of Saturday’s semifinal (5:30 p.m.). Under chilly conditions, Fox took an early lead and never looked back. It’s been a similar story all season long. Jacob Patko opened the scoring on a seven-yard run, followed by a Cam Canales’ 12-yard TD pass to Tanner White. For the undefeated Ravens, the focus is not about regional grudges but on building on their past 10 results and take nothing for granted. “It’s a cross town rivalry that has plenty of interest, and should be an interesting game just the way the two teams play,” Ravens co-coach Tom Kudaba said. “I think the two teams are fairly evenly matched, Centennial is definitely a skilled team who we respect, and it’s always tough to beat a team twice.” The Ravens will be considered heavy favourites, and last year’s champs will hope to play the underdog role to the hilt. Three members of the Coquitlam Skating Club carted off the big prize at the B.C./Yukon Sectional Figure Skating championships last week in Kelowna. The Coquitlam Skating Club’s Brianna Delmaestro, Larissa Horobec and Ronald Lam laced up their skates and strided to gold medals in their respective divisions. Delmaestro won the novice women’s event with a standout short program (35.75), and strong free performance (57.57) to total 93.32 points, one point more than Kelowna’s Makayla Randall. Horobec beat out 60 competitors to post the best marks in both the short (32.55) and free (54.71) for a solid 87.26 points en route to the gold, while Lam struck gold with a tremendous win in senior mens, tallying 175.16 points (58.26, 116.90) for a 30-point lead on clubmate and runnerup Andrew Lum. Lam also carted off the Senior Men’s Artistic Award. Repeat win for Rapids Both Clan teams bounced in first round

Ranked No. 1 going in, the Riverside Rapids senior girls volleyball squad exited as the top team in the AAAA Fraser Valley championships. It was the second straight Valley title for Riverside, who dispatched No. 3-rated Earl Marriott 3-0 (25-21, 2624, 27-25) in the final. The matchup, where the two rivals traded blocks and power shots, proved to be a fierce and entertaining battle. In each set the Rapids were staring at deficits of six points or more but charged back, led by the impressive blocking and serving of Emma Thue and Larua Pennell. “Overall, I am very impressed by the character and resilience of this team, every time the chips were down or we faced adversity, the girls played as a unit and stepped up to face another challenge,” said coach Bryan Gee. Senior Tylar Turnbull was a standout, drawing the tourney’s MVP award, while Grade 11 Mallory Sall earned a first all-

star team honour. In the semifinal, Riverside edged W.J. Mouat 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-20). Riverside recovered from a semifinal setback, where they nearly upset No. 1-ranked Semiahmoo before falling 3-1 (25-22, 25-18, 26-28, 25-22). They rallied from a 2-0 defict to edge Elgin Park 3-2 and advance to the bronze match. While they fell 3-2 to Fraser Heights, they already had the provincial berth. Setting the tone were Liam Brett, Chris Aisekhalaye, Tyler Toscani, Spenser Andrews, Brendan Williams, Hans Seo and all star Victor Zych.

Coquitlam loses track with twin losses

Just when it looked like the Coquitlam Express had turned a corner, their GPS conked out. The BC Hockey League squad dropped two games and fel to 10-11-1-5 on the year with the losses to top-calibre opponents. The Vernon Vipers handed them a 4-3 overtime loss on Friday, and a day later the Coastal Conference leading Powell River Kings skated off with a 4-1 win. The losses weren’t a result of shaky netminding, as the Express’ Luke Hernandez faced 84 shots over the two days. Coquitlam had trouble generating scoring chances — with rookie Mitchell Deacon and Massimo Lamacchia giving them a 2-1 lead against the Vipers. The defending national champions replied twice to stake out its first lead of the night, only to see Garrick Perry convert a shorthanded breakaway with nine minutes left in the third, to tie it. Vernon’s Bryce Kakoske ended it just 23 seconds into the extra stanza. A day later, Michael Krgovich tallied against Powell River. Coquitlam will try to bounce back Friday against Victoria, and Saturday against Penticton. Both games go at 7 p.m. at the Coquitlam Sports Centre.

When the preamble was a lofty rise to the top, there’s no wonder that a sudden loss in the first round came at the hands of Great Falls. The Simon Fraser University men’s soccer team saw their season come to a premature halt Sunday in a shocking 1-0 defeat at the hands of the University of Great Falls Argonauts in the opening round of the NAIA men’s soccer national championships. While the Montana team advances to the round of 16, starting next week in Alabama, the Clan were unable to get any further than Seattle. “Today, we outshot a team and lost on their only real threat,” said SFU coach Alan Koch. “It is incredibly disappointing to lose with this talented group, however an individual approach and cocky attitude was prevalent today and you will not win matches or have success in the game of life with this approach.” Great Falls was the underdog going in against the No. 2-seeded Clan, but survived a forceful attack from SFU. The Burnaby Mountain men outshot the Argonauts 24-3, with the game’s lone goal coming at the 21st minute mark when Ryan O’Neill slotted the ball past SFU keeper Hide Ozawa. That was just the Clan’s second loss of the season, finishing with a 19-2-0 record.

Ray will be lovingly missed and remembered by his wife of 45 years Elaine, children Kevin (Tammy), Kory (Kristy), his sister Jane and grandchildren Amelia, Blake, Olivia and Austin. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday November 27, 2010 from 1 to 4pm at The Cedars (clubhouse) 12264 84 Ave, Surrey.

Passed away peacefully on Monday November 15th 2010 in Maple Ridge, BC at the age of 63. He will lovingly be missed by his wife of 41 years Susan, and his daughters Karen, Jennifer (Graham) niece Crystal, sisters Marilyn (Royce), Leah, many nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and the newest addition to the family his brand new grandson Evan Douglas Farrell, whom he was extremely proud of in the short time he knew him. Doug will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, fishing & hunting, and spending time with his family & dear friends. He was a proud member of the Coquitlam Rotary Club and the community. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday November 27th at 11:00am Place Maillardville (Downstairs) 1200 Cartier Avenue, Coquitlam/ Maillardville. ight years ago, Coquitlam Metro FordSoccer Club (CMFSC), was one of the first clubs in B.C. to look at hiring a paid coach to oversee the technical side of the club. The first hire was Domenic Mobilio and he was in the position for a couple of years until his untimely passing. Since then, CMFSC has always pushed the boundaries in making sure they have the highest quality of coaches to develop its players. The key is having people with significant playing and coaching experience at the highest level as well as a willingness to use this experience to provide kids the best opportunity to become the best soccer player they can be. The most recent addition to the coaching staff is Dale Mitchell as the Director of Coaching. Mitchell is the alltime leading scorer for Canada (10 goals, ’80-’93) and is a Canada Soccer Hall of Fame member. He represented Canada at the World Cup (Mexico, ’86) and in the Olympics (Los Angeles, ’84). He also played professionally (1977-’94) in the

NASL, MISL and CSL. Mitchell went on to coach Canada (’07-’09), the Canadian Under20 men’s side (’01-’07), and Vancouver Whitecaps (’99-’01). He holds a A-National coaching license. “We wanted to provide further attention to our top youth teams and focus on more training and at a higher degree. As well, we wanted to implement a program where our Director of Coaching would work with both the players and coaches, as coach and player development at all levels continues to be CMFSC’s focus,” said Gayle Statton, president of CMFSC. “It also gave us the opportunity to have Alfredo Valente run our U8-U13 divisions on the boy’s side and Andrea Maloney on the girl’s side.” The club is continuing to grow and with that growth and

success comes the need for more emphasis on speciﬁc programs. “I had worked with the club once before about 10 years ago and had a great experience,” said Mitchell. “Since then, the club has added people who think very progressively in terms of youth development. Living in the area and seeing how the club has grown, made it a natural ﬁt for me.” Mitchell was added to an already stellar staff headed by Sara Maglio, who is the CMFSC’s technical director. She played youth soccer for Coquitlam United & Coquitlam City Soccer, and went on to play on provincial teams, to SFU where she won All-American honours for four years, as well as a National championship. Maglio was a member of the U-20 women’s

national team and the national senior team where she played in the 1999 World Cup. She also played for the Vancouver Whitecaps and was a part of the 2004 championship team which was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. Another member of the staff is Alfredo Valente, who as the club’s head coach leads the U8-U13 boys program and head coach of the technical programs. Valente played youth soccer for the MetroFord Soccer Club, and went on to play on provincial teams, on the U17 and U20 national teams, and was a member of the 2000 Canadian Olympic team. Professionally, Valente played for the Edmonton Drillers of the MISL and was a member the Vancouver Whitecaps for 10 seasons. In 1998 he was selected Rookie of the Year and currently stands second in all-time assists for the club. Two others who have active and important roles in the club are Phebe Trotman, who is the head coach of the Initiation Academy, and Andrea Maloney, who runs the U8-U13 girls program.

n its second year of existence in the Super Y-League, Coquitlam MetroFord Soccer (CMFSC) achieved the top ranking for the 2010 regular season. The ranking recognizes the league’s top clubs on a competitive and administrative basis. CMFSC took top honors as the club accumulated a total of 79.39 points, finishing third in each of the boys and girls divisions. The boys U13, U14 and U15 teams all reached the Super Y-League North American finals, while on the girls side, the U13 and U16 sides advanced to the finals, with the U13 team finishing the season undefeated. Founded in 1999, the Super Y-League is dedicated to the progression of future professional players. Averaging 700 teams since 2004, the Super Y-League has steered the course for development of elite clubs, players, and coaches. The Super Y-League contains the youth academies of Major League Soccer clubs, USL PRO clubs, Premier Development League and W-League clubs. It also serves clubs looking to develop the game from the ground up. Top youth academies such as the

Chicago Magic, Mass Premier Soccer and TSF Academy have been members of the league for several seasons. USL’s Super Y-League has revolutionized youth player development in North America. “The fact that we are only in our 2nd year, it shows that as a club, we are extremely organized as the ranking is based on both administrative minimum requirements and on-ﬁeld achievement”, says Sara Maglio. “The reason that being a part of the Yleague is important to the club is that it creates an opportunity for players to play all year round in a very competitive environment. The age structure is based on the U.S. model of Aug-July birthdates, so you have the potential for younger players to play vs. older players and gain the experience.” As well, the Y-league is a stepping stone to provincial and NTC programs as the players are evaluated during the season. It also provides a terriﬁc experience to the 100 kids heading to Florida, along with the potential exposure to US colleges, says Maglio.

The North American finals run Nov 18th through the 23rd. The other success for CMFSC this year was having three teams go to the BMO Canadian national championships in the Maritimes. The national championships are held for both boys and girls teams at the U14, U16 and U18 levels. The three teams that advanced were the U18 boys Dynamo, the U18 girls Silence and the U14 girls Fusion. These teams won provincial titles, thus earned the privilege of representing both B.C. and the club. The final results had both Dynamo and Fusion bring home first-place honors, with the Silence finishing 4th. A terrific result for all three teams. Dynamo cruised through the round robin, winning three straight with 15 goals for and 1 against. Their semifinal game was a one-sided 7-0 win over PEI. In the final they defeated Alberta 3-0. Kresimir Ukalovic and Carlo Basso led the team with eight and six goals respectively. Brando Ciccone only allowed one goal throughout the tournament. The team was coached by Kingsley Jones,

Keegan Ayre and Colin Betts. The Fusion went 2-1 in their round robin. In their semifinal match, they faced Quebec, which had eight provincial players on the team. Fusion came out with a hard-fought 3-2 win. The final pitted them against the Ontario team and Arianna Johnston scored the only goal in a 1-0 win that brought home the gold. The team is coached by Luis Guerreiro, who was assisted by club head coach Alfredo Valente. Despite missing five players from the provincial qualifying team due to college commitments, the U18 girls Silence finished a respectable fourth in the tournament. They finished the round robin at 2-1-1 and ended up in the bronze medal match. They lost the game 1-0 to Alberta. Kristie Sharp led the team with three goals during the tournament. The team was coached by Richard Henley and Kevin Schisler. Richard has coached the Silence for 10 years.

oquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer Club (CMFSC) is home to 2,800 youth players and 200 adults.

It is one of the only clubs in the Lower Mainland to see increases in registration over the past couple of years. The focus of the club is to provide programs for all levels and ages. These programs include development teams, high performance academies, regular academies and goaltending clinics. The one program that has seen explosive growth is the Initiation Academy. The increase in registration over the past four years has gone from 350 kids to over 630. The Initiation Academy is a Coquitlam Metro-Ford Soccer program catering to boys and girls in the Under-5, U6 and U7 age levels. It introduces

soccer gently by eliminating the team environment, which is overly competitive and individually detrimental at this vulnerable age. It runs Sept-March and ends with the kids participating in the annual Domenic Mobilio Friendship Tournament. Sessions are held inside during the week and Saturday and Sunday mornings down at Town Centre. “The program focuses on psychomotor and cognitive skill development. Players move constantly, each with a ball at his or her feet, working on vital skills that will enable them to perform to their maximum potential. Through fun games and activities, they also learn basic co-ordination, ﬂexibility and strong running techniques,” says Phebe Trotman, head coach of the program.

The Initiation Program provides CMFSC with a solid base to continue to have great success at the older age groups.

This Christmas “9-1-1 We Care” is collecting toys for kids aged 0-12 years. All proceeds go to the SHARE Community Services Society, which is expecting at least 500 more local families to register for food & toys this Christmas than in previous years.

“For this year, we had a waitlist for the program and we try not to turn any kids away. We have kids coming all the way from Vancouver for the program, but the majority come from the Tri-Cities area”, she says.

The goal is that upon leaving the Initiation Academy at the end of their three-year experience, children possess more developed skills than other players in the U8 division and have a sense that soccer is the most enjoyable sport there is. The coaches believe that the Initiation Academy provides players with the skills necessary to take their own steps to success. In addition, the program provides quality paid coaching instructors who work with volunteer coaches that want to move through the club.
