Coquitlam bust yields six arrests Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com Police arrested six Coquitlam residents Thursday in connection to an alleged counterfeit currency ring based out of a Dawes Hill home. Mathew Flynn, Michel Mieszkowski, Michael McIntyre and Bradley Voykin face charges of making, possessing and uttering counterfeit banknotes as well as for possessing instruments to make counterfeit money. All four men are in their early 20s. Two women in their early 20s were also arrested and released on promises to appear in court at a later date. Police have not released their names since charges have not yet been laid. RCMP officers say they found fake Canadian bills and blank credit cards while searching buildings in the 1900 block of Dawes Hill in Coquitlam and the 4200 block of Dunbar Street in Vancouver. Investigators also found computers and other equipment allegedly used to make counterfeit banknotes and credit cards. Most of the alleged fake money was in denominations of $100, $50 and $20. Three different serial numbers were used for all the $100 bills: EJE9791896, EJE7771896 and EJE7171891. Another three serial numbers were used for the $20 bills: ARA9965493, ARD4089894 and ERC3300372. In total, police estimate the alleged counterfeiters are responsible for producing and passing $300,000 in fake Canadian banknotes throughout B.C., Alberta and Manitoba in the past 10 months. This amounts to about 80 per cent of all counterfeit currency passed in  CONT. ON PAGE 4, see ‘PEOPLE.’

Liberal MLAs dismiss recall threats

The Shorty List is a new website that compiles firsthand reviews of these facilities throughout Metro Vancouver, providing opinions from parents, teachers and staff. Liberal MLA focused on countering ‘misinformation’ about HST

Supreme Court case got underway Monday, with a lobby group made up of business and industry reps arguing that the petition drive should be scrapped because it is a federal tax, and therefore not subject to provincial laws. The Fight HST campaign, which is headed up by Port Coquitlam’s Chris Delaney, maintains that the 12-percent tax introduced on July 1 required the province’s blessing, and therefore can be viewed as a provincial matter. “It’s a harmonized tax. It’s both a provincial and federal tax, both in substance and in form … it still required the province to agree to it in order to create it and therefore it required the legislature to approve of it — otherwise you have taxation without representation.” While it’s unclear how long the court case will take to play out — potential appeals could take years — Delaney’s group

that’s effectively what they will have done. Every MLA should be recalled for doing that,” Delaney said. Communications gaffes aside, both Horne and Black maintain they’ve received next to no negative feedback from their constituents since the tax was implemented on July 1. A lot of their work,

however, has centred around explaining what the tax does and doesn’t apply to, Black said. “There’s still a great deal of misinformation out there that we’re having to address,” he said, “and that comes back to our communications challenges, which we clearly have to do better on.”

To confirm if a banknote is real, RCMP recommend touching, tilting and looking through the bill. Security features on the new Canadian Journey series include a holographic stripe, watermark portrait, windowed security thread and see-through number. Sgt. Tony Farahbakhchian, counterfeit co-ordinator for B.C. and the Yukon, said the bills allegedly made by the Coquitlam

As well, the watermarks were missing and the hologram quality was not the same as that of a genuine bill. “People don’t pay attention to their notes. They were not good notes. They were passable notes, but if you know the features, it should be 100-per-cent detectable. That’s the message I want to send across,” Farahbakhchian told The NOW. “It’s only $30,000 or $40,000 a month that we’ve been seeing for the past 10 months. It’s still a drop in the bucket; however, we don’t want people to think they can get away with that.”

From there, the bills get forwarded to the anti-counterfeit bureau in Ottawa where they are classified by serial number. Business goes the extra mile

I just thought I would share a feel-good story about a local business. Last month our minivan was in an accident the night before leaving for a family trip to the Island. Despite the damage, our vehicle was still operable, so we decided to go on our trip. After packing our gear the damaged part of the minivan was scraping one tire, so badly in fact that we couldn’t make it past Port Moody. As we were pulling into the terminal, I realized I couldn’t find our confirmation information because it was in my bag, which I had left in the waiting room at Craftsman Collision. Besides the usual items

(keys, wallet, etc.) I had my EPI pen, inhalers and other important medicines. Within a minute of stopping to wait to board the ferry, Kalena (the woman at the front desk when you arrive at Craftsman Collision) came toward our minivan with my bag. I was sitting in the middle row and I leapt over the front seat, crying and hugging her because I couldn’t believe how lucky I was. Here was a woman who drove an hour to give me my bag, during a busy business day, Editor and I had only spoken to her for a few minutes. Mundy decision should be an easy one

he message is loud and clear: Coquitlam residents do not want an adventure playground in Mundy Park. Long regarded as the jewel of Coquitlam and the Tri-Cities’ answer to Stanley Park, Mundy is a special place. It’s in a natural enough state that it’s different from the average city park, and allows visitors to feel they’ve left the cares of urban civilization behind. As the Tri-Cities grow, Mundy Park will become even more important to residents. As for the city’s trial balloon testing public reaction to the adventure playground idea, it’s destined to deflate rapidly once council resumes meeting this fall. Judging from letters to the editor (14 and counting), and results of a poll on the city’s website (91 per cent opposed), Mundy is not the place for such a facility. Whether it’s concerns over the commercialization of parks, loss of habitat for wildlife or increases in traffic and pollution, residents are letting council know they feel the same as those who spoke out against the city’s last major plan for the park: a golf course. So why was this trial balloon launched at all? Perhaps council members forgot the level of public anger over the golf course proposal. Or maybe they thought that since it’s summer — the time of year when most people are more interested in barbecues and pool parties than what comes out of City Hall — the plan would attract little attention. Whatever the reasons, the fact that so many people have come out against the proposal before it has even been publicly debated should leave council members with a clear choice: either ditch the idea altogether or find a more suitable location. To do otherwise would risk igniting a local version of the anger B.C.’s Liberal government is now facing over the HST.

Those who insist his actions are somehow an assault on democracy are making exaggerated claims. The legislature committee will not even sit until sometime in September at the earliest, so whether or not it receives the petition right now is irrelevant. As well, it’s unlikely the committee will take any action until it gets a sense of what’s going to happen to the two court challenges involving the petition. Finally, the legislative bill to repeal the HST will not be introduced in the legislature until the spring (if that is indeed what the committee opts for). So there is no urgency here. While I personally feel James should have indeed sent the petition to the committee, his failure to do that hardly creates some kind of intolerable anti-democratic atmosphere. If by the fall the committee still doesn’t have the petition, then we may have a problem. But one does not exist right now. And those conspiracy buffs who darkly ascribe partisan motives to James’ decision are wildly off-base as well. I’ve known the man for more than 20 years, and can attest to his integrity and independence. So, everyone: calm down.

Message to council: Don’t mess with Mundy Park As a resident of Coquitlam, I am calling on all residents of Coquitlam to phone, write, e-mail your mayor and council members and demand they stand up and be counted for or against the proposal to turn part of Mundy Park into a wilderness theme park. We need leaders that have the guts to show us where they stand before they commit themselves. ••• Coquitlam is considering putting an adventure park in Mundy Park in order to generate revenue. I simple can’t agree with this direction. Our city parks were never meant to be commercialized. Coquitlam continues to lose valuable green space yearly due to development. Mundy Park represents one of the few urban forest systems in the Lower Mainland and is a unique green jewel for all citizens to enjoy in its natural state. It’s a place where people can go and escape the daily stresses of life and enjoy the tranquility and quiet of the park. The ecological value of our parks is also incredibly important for our city, allowing different species of

plants and animals to prosper. As well, the local community close to the park will pay the price of higher traffic volumes, parking issues and increased vandalism. Our natural parks also serve by adding value to residential properties. There is a significant link between the value of a property and its proximity to parks and other green spaces. Some developers have come to realize that preserving natural green space within new subdivisions can increase the value and desirability of home lots. Our parks were not amenities; they are necessities, providing health and environmental benefits, a sense of community pride and a higher quality of life. Mundy Park improves our physical and psychological health, strengthens our communities and makes Coquitlam a more attractive place to live and work in. Coquitlam needs to find another way of generating funds — other than selling our parks. jkurucz@thenownews.com A Coquitlam man is on the lookout for two mock sumo wrestler outfits that were mistakenly left behind at Blue Mountain Park on Friday. Fraser Retallack told The NOW he left a barbecue at the park at about 10:30 p.m., only to realize more than a half hour later that he had left the suits behind. He said they were left on Porter Street, near Como Lake Middle School. “They were there for maybe a half hour or 45 minutes before we realized at the other end [of our trip] that we had forgotten them,” he said. “We got back there as soon as possible, but they were gone.” Retallack said each suit is roughly five and a half feet tall and weighs about 40 pounds. “They look like a sumo wrestler without a head, hands or feet. They’re skin-coloured and mostly anatomically correct,” he said, adding that on top of the outfits, matching helmets and gloves were also taken. The suits belong to Retallack’s friend, who owns a Vancouverbased sumo wrestler costume company called Vancouver Sumo. The two outfits account for half of the company’s inventory and are estimated to be worth more than $1,000. Police ask for public’s help to find man missing since Aug. 6 jkurucz@thenownews.com The Coquitlam RCMP is asking for the public’s help in finding a 63-year-old man who recently went missing from the Riverview Hospital grounds. Jack Vernon MacLeod left Riverview’s Coast Cottages program on a day pass at about 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6, and has not been heard from since. He is wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for being unlawfully at large and should not be approached by the public.

MacLeod is described as Caucasian, five-foot-fourinches tall and weighing 154 pounds. He has balding saltand-pepper hair, with blue eyes and a medium complexion. He was last seen wearing a beige suede jacket, a blue button-up dress shirt and dress pants. He usually uses a cane to walk, but did not take his cane with him when he left the Coast Cottages facility earlier this month. PoCo seeks multi-family buildings for recycling pilot project The City of Port Coquitlam is looking for two apartment or condo complexes to take part in a kitchen scraps recycling pilot project set to begin in mid-September. Since November 2009, residents who receive city waste collection services have been able to recycle their food scraps and food-soiled papers — including meat, bones, dairy, paper plates, pizza boxes, fruits and vegetables — along with their yard trimmings. During the first seven months of this year, according to a press release from the city, the program helped divert 1,092 tonnes from the landfill, a 27-per-cent reduction from the same period in 2009. oquitlam Centre’s first installment of the Summer Drivein Movies series attracted upwards of 700 people, netting more than $3,000 in cash donations for the SHARE Family & Community Services Society. The series debut last Wednesday featured a screening of Iron Man and, aside from the monetary contributions, about 70 pounds worth of food were donated to SHARE as well. “It was great. We figure we had about 170 cars and probably well over 700 people,” said Coquitlam Centre’s marketing director Deborah Stetz. “It’s been really positive.” Of the $3,224 raised, Stetz noted that $1,112 came by way of Scotiabank, one of the partner companies in the summer movie series. Stetz said the Coquitlam movie series is based on a series of similar movie nights staged at a Victoria mall two years ago. “When we first started planning this, we wanted to do it as a fundraiser because July and August are tough times for a food bank,” Stetz said, “so we planned it to be something fun and unique for families and the community to follow up on the Christmas in July campaign that SHARE does.” Tonight’s screening of The Notebook represents the date night element of the three-part series, while the Aug. 25 showing of How to Train Your Dragon will serve as family night. Preferred passes are available for any of the three movies for a $10-per-car non-refundable donation to SHARE, allowing those patrons access to the parking lot by 6 p.m. Otherwise, the lot opens at 8 p.m. and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. “We had a rush on preferred passes the day after the last movie and the one that’s been the most popular is the movie we’ll be screening on the 25th, which is family night for How to Train Your Dragon,” Stetz said. “That one seems to be really popular.” For more info, see www.coquitlamcentre.com.

he cheers from below fueled my courage. Still, with every step the air currents seemed ever stronger, my knuckles grew ever whiter as my fingers clutched the rigging, and my refrains of “Yo, ho, ho” sang out with ever-decreasing bravado. But there was little choice. My ascent was a matter of honour borne out of a cheery time the evening before when I had blithely accepted a challenge to climb the ratlines. After all, how hard could it be? My ancestors had served in the British Royal Navy on craft such as this and surely somewhere, somehow, their salt was in my veins. In truth, sailing has never been my forte, but after a few days on board the Angelique, one of a dozen historic multi-mast vessels that form the Maine Windjammer Association, it was as if I had been born to feel the wind. One hundred years ago, schooners raced up and down the Eastern seaboard to get their precious goods to market, and only fell into near oblivion with the advent of faster steamships and trains. Today, these majestic craft are making a comeback, refurbished and steadfast in plying a new styled cargo through the water: passengers. Although many vessels date back some 80 to 100 years, the Angelique was purposely built in 1980 for the modern windjamming trade. Based out of picturesque Camden, Maine, she is the only ketch in the association’s fleet and, fashioned after a sturdy English fishing trawler of the late 1880s, has several other distinguishing features. These include a raised helm, roomy deck space, ondeck lounge and galley — warm refuge if the wind starts to bite — and 5,296 square feet of red-hued sails, the result of a time-honoured weather resistant treatment involving tallow, tannic acid and red ochre. Windjamming is the antithesis of big-box cruises, and offers an intimate experience for sailing enthusiast and neophyte alike. Start by finding a sunny spot and watch the Penobscot Bay shore glide by as a moving tableau of historic lighthouses, whitewashed homes with lobster pots stacked to their roof line, wildlife of nesting puffins, seals, squawking gulls and magnificent rocky outcrops that have made the coastline legendary. Chances are that at some point you’ll rally to the first mate’s battle cry, “Team work is no work,” and will find yourself helping to raise the jib, hoist the rope, splice a line or furl the sail. Even getting ashore is an involved process: jumping into a skiff, grabbing an oar (unless you take a centre seat) and rowing to a village dock or a granite ledge ornamented with barnacles, mussels and periwinkles. appetite for traditional, homestyle cuisine — tasty and always plenty of it — and certainly promotes a great night’s sleep in surprisingly comfortable, albeit tiny, cabins. Another allure of windjamming is its out-ofthe-ordinary shore excursions to islands, coves and hamlets. Places like Wooden Boat Harbor and its one-of-a-kind boat-building school; North Haven, where galleries only accept cash or a promise that’ll you’ll send payment later; Pulpit Harbor (aka Calvet Harbour from Angela Lansbury’s popular TV series Murder, She Wrote); and Cranberry Island, which you can traverse in 20 minutes to a beach strewn with white-banded “lucky” stones and always a special place to view spectacular sunsets against which the entire crew will conjure up a feast of lobster, baked beneath a swaddle of seaweed. As a cruise ship port, Bar Harbor is an exception but no less delightful. This small urban community bustles with shops and galleries and is a nice change of pace, especially if you take time to see some of the older homes that still exude an elegant grandeur of their Rockefeller-era heritage. Experiencing the romance of a bygone age is really the essence of any windjamming adventure. It invokes a freedom of spirit that dwarfs sailing in any smaller craft and you can’t help but release the everyday. And in doing so, your imagination will unfurl into the wind, from where it might even evoke images of pirates climbing the ratlines.

A thrift store that makes a difference Recently the Crossroads Hospice Thrift Store celebrated its sixth anniversary with a blow out sale and community celebration. The Kinsmen came out with their massive barbecue. Loyal customers dropped by to share in the fun. Everyone was looking for a great deal on quality items.The thrift store volunteers and staff members played host to all who attended. As special as this day was it wasn’t unique.This was just a small sample of the type of customers, products and services that the Crossroads Hospice Thrift Store works with everyday. Tri-City residents see the thrift store as a place where they can give back to their community through their donations and patronage.

With two paid staff members and the support of over 70 volunteers there is plenty of passion for running the store and great opportunities to get to know our neighbours. Volunteers report that they have made new friendships, gained valuable work experience, and have a lot of fun. For the families whose lives have been touched by the Crossroads Hospice Society, the thrift store is a place where they can entrust their loved ones belongings. Items donated by Tri-City residents are sorted and selected for resale or given to other community groups if they can’t be used. “Our store has a very loyal customer base and dedicated volunteers. Customers surveyed have often commented on the need for a larger store.They want more items – more bargains,” says Rose Jonas, Crossroads Hospice Thrift Store Coordinator.

TransLink urges commuters to try something new Children returning to school, workers back from vacation and post-secondary students going back to class create the annual “perfect storm” for commuters in the first half of September. Traditionally, TransLink records its highest annual transit ridership in the two to three weeks after Labour Day, particularly until postsecondary students settle in to their new class schedules. Add heavy traffic on the roads, and the daily commute becomes a test of patience for many. Last year, according to a press release from TransLink, ridership on the entire system jumped more than 9.9 per cent from August to September, and the number of boardings was up 13.6 per cent over the previous September. In recent months, the new Canada Line has been averaging close to 110,000 trips each weekday, SkyTrain’s Expo and Millennium

Lines see more than a quarter-million boardings daily, and the Broadway corridor is one of the most heavily used bus routes in North America, with 52,000 boardings on an average weekday — more than the busiest routes in New York City, Los Angeles and Toronto. TransLink is reminding commuters that some of the “TravelSmart” things Metro Vancouver residents did to get around during the Olympics will work just as well in September, as options for trips in peak commuting periods. The regional transportation authority has been able to maintain transit services at the unprecedented levels reached in late 2009 and the program to modernize the bus, rail and passenger ferry fleets and keep everything in good operating condition has significantly reduced service disruptions. ICBC offers tips on taking a safe summer road trip As British Columbians enjoy the last few weeks before Labour Day — the unofficial end of summer — for many that also means summer getaways. If you’ll be hitting the road, you can help make our highways safer by slowing down and making smart driving decisions. First, ICBC suggests in a press release, take all the necessary steps to have a safe and enjoyable summer vacation. If your activities will include alcohol, be safe — don’t drink and drive. The dangers are well known and police are out in force to keep drinking drivers off the road. And remember it is now illegal to use handheld devices while driving. Three time’s the charm for senior golfer

Chalk up a third-straight title for Port Moody’s Gudmund Lindbjerg. The 62-year-old golfer successfully defended his B.C. Senior Men’s championship with a polished three-day total of 212, thanks to a hot final round of 69 at Abbotsford’s Ledgeview Golf Club. Lindbjerg edged out Kelowna’s Brock Waldron by two strokes with a one-under par 69 on the last day. “It’s a huge relief to win — I think experience was the key,” said Lindbjerg in a press release. “I’ve been here before, so I know how to win and stay level. I’m the first to win three in a row and very proud of it. “Today I told myself I was going to hang in there and just play one shot at a time and it paid off.” The win positions Lindbjerg as the captain of the B.C. team at the Canadian Senior men’s championships in St. Thomas, Ont., running Aug. 30-Sept. 3. Coquitlam’s Ollie Lantela fired a three-day score of 225 (75-74-76) to finish tied for 16th spot. In the B.C. Super Senior division, Coquitlam’s Ron Petersen fired rounds of 79, 76 and 79 en route to sixth place.

Phan connects for Games bronze

Port Coquitlam’s Melanie Phan turned sweat and toil into a medal at the inaugural Youth Olympic Games in Singapore on Monday. The 17 year old defeated Singapore’s Nur Zakirah Zakaria 15-6 for the 49-kilogram bronze medal. The Port Moody Tae Geuk Taekwon Do Club athlete got off to a quick start with two torso kicks, and upped her attack with nine straight points after Zakaria landed a kick to the head. “I’m very happy with my result,” Phan said. “But I know I can do better.” She opened with a 7-1 win over her Egyptian rival, before falling to a judge’s decision in a 4-4 battle with Thailand. Phan is a four-time defending junior national champion who has also captured the Canadian Senior title in 2009 and 2010.

The B.C. junior Little League champions are midway through the Junior World Series in Taylor, MI., sitting 0-2 after three days of action. Tuesday’s tough lesson came via Chinese Taipei, who maintained its perfect record with a 10-0 decision. “They’re a very good team, we knew that they are the team to beat in the international division,” Coquitlam manager Wes Taylor said. “We had one of our top pitchers going, but it kind of steamrolled.” Taipei opened up a 1-0 lead in the first inning and added six in the second. Experience adds up for Express Dan Olson sports@thenownews.com Training camp is just days away, but the Coquitlam Express management isn’t waiting for the players’ arrival to make moves. The B.C. Hockey League club reeled in a small but offensive sparkplug in a swap with the Central Canadian Hockey League’s Markham Waxers last week. The Express dealt future considerations to acquire 5’8” forward Massimo Lamacchia, a 19year-old with solid offensive skills. He joins a handful of other junior A and major junior experienced players who new head coach/director of hockey operations Jon Calvano feels can help the club compete and challenge for more than just a playoff spot. In the past two-and-a half months, Calvano has acquired the rights to forwards Jesse Halikas, Steve Axford and Jason Grecica and defenceman Matt Hutchinson, along with the rights to WHL veteran and Coquitlam native Riley McIntosh. The players, who have had mixed success in other leagues and at other levels, have a fresh opportunity to demonstrate their skills. The latest acquisition, Lamacchia, tallied 17 goals and 22 assists in 38 games with the Waxers, while drawing 75 penalty minutes. That in-your-face demeanour was an added attraction for Calvano. “We brought him in to help our offence and round our top offensive lines,” Calvano said of Lamacchia. “He’s a 5’8 puck-moving forward who’s very intelligent and plays with a bit of an edge. He gets involved.”

It won’t be Lamacchia’s first stint in the B.C. Hockey League. He began last season in Victoria with the Grizzlies, posting an assist over four games before being shipped to Markham. “He’s adamant, he told Markham he wanted to be traded and wants to show that he can play in this league,” noted Calvano. The Toronto Marlies minor product also played for Stouffville of the Ontario Jr. Hockey League in 2008-09, being the only 17 year old chosen to play in the all-star game that year. Halikas, a 6’1 centre who came via Alberta’s Brooks Bandits, was a member of the Port Alberni Bulldogs for 26 games last year, netting two goals and eight assists.
