Rounding out the top 10 at $128,003.79 is Sylvia Pritchard, who retired earlier this year. This total reflects her end-of-contract payout, which included accrued sick time and vacation days. In total, the district paid $186,167,845.90 in salary and benefits for all employees, plus $1,039,740.63 in expenses. The majority of elected school trustees received $25,267.20, with Keith Watkins making slightly less at $25,249.64. Councillors raise hospital concerns
Report says Eagle Ridge Hospital lacks a ‘clearly articulated role and mandate’ John Kurucz jkurucz@thenownews.com A scathing report questioning the role, mandate and service levels at Eagle Ridge Hospital has at least two Coquitlam councillors demanding answers. Released in November 2009, the service review of the hospital prepared by Ontario-based physician Robert Bear questions staffing levels, services offered and the hospital’s overall mandate. The report also highlights a number of challenges faced by hospital staffers, including emergency room nurses who are “constantly pressured” while working in an understaffed department. The report goes on to make 27 recommendations, the most notable of which argues that the hospital needs a “clearly articulated role and mandate.” “At the present, Eagle Ridge Hospital does not

serve as a fully functioning community hospital and its role as a contributor to the Fraser Health network of hospitals is unclear,” the report states. Though the report was never released publicly, Coun. Neal Nicholson received a copy and was shocked by what he read. “This is a community issue. Eagle Ridge is our community hospital,” he told The NOW. “It’s never reached its full potential, and it’s never had a clearly defined role or mandate. Nobody knows what it’s supposed to be doing.” Nicholson introduced a notice of motion at Monday’s council meeting calling on Fraser Health to “quickly and publicly address all 27 recommendations, placing the highest priority on clarifying and communicating the role and mandate of Eagle Ridge Hospital.” The motion also calls for the development and filling of medical leadership positions at the hospital.

That part of the motion is derived from the second recommendation of the Bear report, which calls for the appointment of a series of department heads in areas including surgery, emergency medicine, medicine, anesthesia and rehab medicine. The report also calls for department heads to be appointed for the medical care unit and ambulatory care. “I didn’t realize that these things weren’t in place,” said Coun. Selina Robinson, who seconded Nicholson’s motion on Monday. “That there is no one in charge, that freaks me out. There is no mission or mandate.” Not so, says Val Spurrell, who serves as Eagle Ridge’s executive director of acute care programs. Spurrell said 80 per cent of the report’s recommendations have either been fully implemented or are in the process of being implemented.

School district rethinks budget process Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com Budget deliberations will begin early in the new year — instead of in the spring — as School District 43 grapples with tough financial decisions. Secretary-treasurer Rick Humphreys presented trustees with a report Tuesday stating that the district’s current budget model is not financially sustainable. “We continue to face underfunding and cost downloading by the government, and we have no indication that that is going to stop … So now we’re into the real-world problem of trying to sustain a very successful organization on less money than we have,” Humphreys said.

back in — money that we presently do not have,” Humphreys said. “So we either need to generate that somehow or we need to make some budget decisions around that.” Even if the district comes up with this money, it’s only the beginning of what is required to address ongoing needs. “These are my opinions. There’s educated judgment behind it. But I wouldn’t suggest that if we suddenly had an influx of $7 million, everything would be wonderful,” Humphreys said. “It’s a start of what we need to do.” The district will use a modified zero-based budget approach this year, Humphreys said, adding that both the process and financial statements will be more transparent.
Coquitlam on hook for helipad upgrades John Kurucz
*selected areas only
“As a result, we’re going to have to try to do things differently this year in our budget process. There will be more involvement because I think decisions are more difficult.” This year, budget discussions are set to begin in January instead of later in the school year after provincial funding is announced. That way, information from public presentations can be considered throughout the process rather than at the last minute. Another $7 million in funding is needed to develop a financially sustainable operating budget for 2011 to 2012, Humphreys said. This money would cover a $1.5-million structural deficit, with additional funds for supplies and equipment, technology and teaching hotspots. “In my opinion, we need to put about $7 million
jkurucz@thenownews.com The City of Coquitlam is likely going to be left to foot an $80,000 bill for upgrades to a helicopter landing pad at the Town Centre Fire Hall that’s used 12 times per year at most. A report from Coquitlam Fire and Rescue chief Tony Delmonico, presented to council Monday, notes that new federal regulations are driving the required upgrades: repaving and repainting the helipad, tree removal
and new flight path drawings. The helipad is used predominantly by the BC Ambulance Service, RCMP, Coquitlam Search and Rescue and by the local fire department, particularly in forest fire season. Given the range of users, Coun. Mae Reid was adamant that other agencies — including the provincial or federal government — offer up some cash. “There’s something wrong with this scenario … I’d like to get some funding back from somebody,” she said. Delmonico said grant opportunities were explored, though none were
available. He added that the other agencies were asked to assist in paying the $80,000, though all of them declined. “There’s a long relationship with many organizations here in the city. The heliport has been there ever since the station was opened and I don’t think we’ve ever charged for that use,” Delmonico said, adding that private industry and TV and film businesses are charged for the use of the heliport. Mayor Richard Stewart said regardless of who uses the facility, the upgrades are necessary.
“It doesn’t cost any more to own a heliport that gets used 12 extra times a year than it would if those other agencies weren’t using it,” he said. “If they weren’t using it, we would probably be upgrading the heliport anyway and incurring the $80,000 cost.” Coun. Lou Sekora said the $80,000 costs are justified when weighed against the alternatives. “If there’s one emergency in the city and somebody lost their life because we could not land a helicopter, I think it would be worth a lot more than $80,000,” he said.

Eagle Ridge Hospital has recently been renovated. ized wound-care nurse has also been hired. “For the most part, all of the key things that were critical, especially the general surgery and internists … have progressed quite a ways and we’re really pleased with the progress that’s been made.” As for clarifying the role and mandate of the hospital, Spurrell maintains that information is already in place.
“The review reinforced that [Eagle Ridge Hospital] has got a future. It’s got a very viable and important future within the network as an acute community hospital.” Nicholson is also calling on Port Moody, Port Coquitlam, Anmore and Belcarra to pass resolutions similar to his. Nicholson’s notice of motion will go before council at the Monday, Dec. 13 meeting.

Mrs. Yong is 52 years-old and complained of headaches and hearing sounds inside her head. She also complained she had ringing in her ears and had difficulties hearing. She came for help and after two sessions plus some TCM medicine, she can now hear normally. 3. Scott is 23 years-old and a senior at SFU. He coughed continually for 3 years but stopped completely after just 3 treatments. He is now strong and coughs no more.
She has since hosted a CKNW radio show on politics. “My experience on air, outside the cocoon of Victoria, gave me a fresh perspective. She pointed to renovations in the emergency room and ambulatory care units that have allowed gastrointestinal scope work to take place. General surgeries have been increased to five days per week, she said, and more funding has been allotted for in-patient beds for both medicine and rehab. Spurrell also said a rapid access clinic has been opened on a five-day-per-week basis, and is staffed with specialized physicians who can assist patients and Eagle Ridge physicians, on top of providing consultation. Concerns around the leadership structure for various departments have also been addressed, Spurrell said. “A lot of the recommendations were around the medical leadership structure and needing department heads at Eagle Ridge, and we’ve done that,” she said, adding that a special-
Former Tri-Cities MLA Christy Clark has officially included her name among those running for the BC Liberal Party leadership. Clark, who served nine years as an MLA for Port Moody-Westwood, announced Wednesday that she would seek the Liberal leadership and laid out her platform to present to party members. “Making sure government establishes a better connection with families is crucial. But this only matters if it leads to action,” she said in a press release. While working in the legislature, Clark served as education minister, in addition to deputy premier. School board opposes cell tower for PoCo park Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com School District 43’s board of education has officially registered its opposition to a proposed cell tower location near Coquitlam River Elementary. Trustees agreed unanimously Tuesday to send a letter of opposition to the City of Port Coquitlam and Rogers Communications Inc. In June, the school board passed a motion to oppose any cellular tower or antenna within 305 metres of a school. At the time, Rogers was proposing a cell tower to be located in the Port Coquitlam cemetery, 120 metres from Coquitlam River Elementary.
The cemetery site is no longer being considered. However, Rogers recently proposed to lease city property in Greenmount Park to install a semipermanent telecommunications tower, which would also be used by Telus. Coquitlam resident David Werthman thanked the school board Tuesday for its June 15 decision to oppose cell towers near schools, calling the move “wise and courageous.” “Not all school boards have done that and I think you deserve a compliment,” he said. “I think you deserve praise for that.” Coquitlam resident Peter Endisch also thanked the board for sending the letter of opposition to Rogers. “I’m going to be within the 400-metre radius
of the cell tower if it comes forward … I’ve been talking to a lot of parents in the vicinity and, quite frankly, they’re outraged that Rogers is even proposing to put a cell tower that close,” Endisch said. “There’s a real outrage in the community and they’re very displeased that Rogers is not doing a public meeting, so the citizens are holding their own.” Rogers is currently conducting a 30-day consultation and notification process to gather public input on the proposal, as mandated by Industry Canada. Written comments on the proposal can be provided until Dec. 19 to Rogers Communications Inc., care of Standard Land Company Inc. at 610-688 West Hastings St., Vancouver, B.C., V6B 1P1. Feedback can also be e-mailed to CommentsBC@standardland. com.
Police ask for public’s help in hit-and-run case A hit-and-run that happened more than a week ago has left a pedestrian with injuries and police turning to the public for help. Just after midnight on Sunday, Nov. 28, RCMP were called to Como Lake Avenue near Robinson Street, where they found a 31-year-old Coquitlam man lying on the ground in obvious pain.
He was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital by ambulance and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect vehicle had fled the scene, but the pedestrian was able to provide a partial description to investigators. The vehicle that hit him is described as a small sportier car like an Acura or Honda, and was either dark blue or

Thanks, but no thanks. That’s how New Westminster-Coquitlam and Port Moody MP Fin Donnelly is reacting to his name being bandied about in relation to the provincial NDP’s current leadership void. “I’m certainly flattered that my name is in there, but I’m not thinking about it,” he said Wednesday. “I’m staying where I am, I’m focused on what I’m doing and I’m really enjoying being fisheries critic.” On Monday, provincial NDP leader Carole James announced that she would be stepping down as party leader as soon as an interim leader is chosen. “There’s definitely a lot of work for whoever takes that job on to mend the fences and get people back on track and working together,” Donnelly said. “It’s a fair amount of work.”

Central Elementary students benefit from SFU connection Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com Simon Fraser University health science undergrads presented a public show-andtell recently of the results of a class that blended academic and real-world learning. The weekly three-hour course alternated locations between SFU on Burnaby Mountain and the library at Central Community School. The 18 SFU students also volunteered at least four hours per week to apply their academic learning at the Port Coquitlam elementary school. Central Community School principal Nadine Tambellini said the SFU students spent more time than required on their volunteer service. “Our kids love the university students and, because of
their connections with their SFU friends, many of our kids have experienced successes in their school lives and healthy habits that could have taken longer to achieve,” Tambellini said in a press release. Will the next premier have local ties?

f the latest opinion poll is any indication, the next B.C. election could come down to a race between a PoCo politician and a former Port Moody politician. An Angus Reid poll released Thursday pegs Port Coquitlam MLA and Opposition house leader Mike Farnworth as the most popular choice to lead the NDP. The same poll lists former Port MoodyWestwood MLA Christy Clark — who also served as education minister and deputy premier — as the top choice for Liberal leader. While Clark made it official Wednesday that she intends to seek the top Liberal job, Farnworth hasn’t yet declared whether he will run for leader of the NDP. So far, in fact, no one has come forward for that position. Since NDP leader Carole James’s resignation is still a fresh wound for many NDPers, it will probably be at least Monday before anyone from inside the party publicly states a plan to replace her. Nevertheless, the pundits are already talking. They’re saying that, while leadership hopeful Kevin Falcon may be a favourite among Liberal party members, the general public views Clark as less controversial. That’s something Falcon supporters will have to take into account as they consider whether their pick for party leader will win the support of voters on election day. Interestingly, all four Liberal candidates in the Tri-Cities — MLAs Iain Black and Doug Horne and hopefuls Bernie Hiller and Dennis Marsden — are publicly backing Falcon rather than Clark. It’s harder to know what’s happening in the NDP’s inner circle, since the party’s still in recovery mode after the shock of James’s Monday resignation — and is facing what we can only assume is a bitterly divided caucus. A snap election might be called this spring, though, so the NDP doesn’t have much time to waste in pulling itself together. Nothing’s a sure bet, but if Farnworth or Clark becomes premier, Tri-Cities causes like the Evergreen Line may soon have a higher profile and, hopefully, a powerful advocate.

‘Mismanagement’ Re: “Coquitlam taxes to rise 3.18 per cent,” Wednesday, Dec. 8. On first blush, the proposed tax increase for 2011 was likely welcome news to most Coquitlam taxpayers. While the increase appears respectable on the surface, it still To The Editor remains that the percentage increase is more than most homeowners will see on their paycheque or pension in 2011, with the exception of our very well paid city employees. This proposed increase represents nothing more than a smoke and mirrors budget geared to do not much more than enable our city councillors to be re-elected in 2011 to another three-year term of mismanagement and waffling on the real issues facing our city, and consequently the taxpayer. This budget simply reflects city management’s efforts to buy time with temporary cost-saving measures and the hope of future increased revenues while, in the meantime, continuing to pull the wool over the eyes of a complacent and much-too-busy taxpayer to pay the necessary attention to what’s really going on at City Hall. The budget does nothing to address the continuing long-term

Coquitlam homeowners will pay a higher property tax rate in 2011, but the 3.18-per-cent increase is the lowest in five years. structural problems, which neither council nor city management seem to want to address at this time. Coun. Barrie Lynch was correct when he said council seemed to be too preoccupied with how the percentage increases would look to the public, allowing many important expenditures to fall by the wayside and putting budget pressures on future councils. However, Lynch and most of the remaining council have been architects of this problem. If the recent study by the Canadian Federation of Independent Business is correct, and I have no reason to doubt its accuracy, it found that between 2000 and 2007 (the last year data is available) Coquitlam spent more than double its population and inflation growth, which seems to be the appropriate measurement for the same growth in operating costs.
The study also found that municipal wages are a substantial driver of municipal spending, with municipal employees earning upwards of 35 per cent more in wages and benefits than they would make in an equivalent job in the private sector. Consequently, we can only wait and see if this council will take the necessary hard stand when collective bargaining once again resumes in the near future or continue to featherbed annual budgets using smoke and mirrors tactics to ultimately leave a mess for some future council to try and clean up. Canadians tell us that the abuse that exists within polygamist cults can be dealt with if polygamy is decriminalized. Women and girls cannot easily report forced marriages, rape or abuse. If they object to these abuses, patriarchal leaders have been known to take their children away and assign them to a shack. Disobeying the patriarch has even led to deaths, as we saw in the dreadful murder of the teenage daughters and second wife of a Middle-Eastern fundamentalist patriarch. If Canada decriminalizes polygamy, we will be the only developed country in the world to take this backward step. We are sending our young men and women to Afghanistan to protect the rights of women and children. Why would we bring this abusive practice to Canada and create inequality between sexes? I love my multicultural society, with its mix of languages and religions. However, we must uphold polygamy laws. If not, we might open Canada’s border to an influx of immigrant polygamists and turn a blind eye to polygamists with 26 wives and over 100 children. Do the math. What happens to the young men without access to wives? What will happen to our Canadian values of equality of the sexes, the rights of our children and the freedoms we so dearly cherish? School plans Bethlehem walk Hope Lutheran Christian School will host its Bethlehem Walk next Wednesday and Thursday. At the outdoor presentation, the school will transform itself into a recreation of Bethlehem to dramatize the Christmas story. To draw attention to the event, the school has rented a Second World War-era searchlight that will shine into the night sky. “Last year one woman, who came to the walk with her 10-year-old daughter, commented that her daughter saw the light as they were Christmas shopping and insisted they come find out what it was for,” principal Mike Schiemann said in a press release. “On a night when they intended simply to Christmas shop, they heard about the true meaning of Christmas. What a blessing.” The event will include a guided tour every five to 10 minutes. The tour begins by entering a large tent in the school parking lot that provides shelter for scenes depicting the Garden of Eden, Mary and Joseph at the inn, an angel choir and the arrival of the wise men. From there, the tour moves to the church sanctuary for musical presentations from students in grades 5 to 8. It ends with refreshments and goodies. Live animals — sheep, donkeys, goats and llamas — could add an unpredictable element to the event. “Many people did a double-take last year as they walked through each scene,” Schiemann said. The Bethlehem Walk takes place Dec. 15 and 16 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The school is located at 3151 York St. in PoCo. For more information, call 604-942-5322 or e-mail mschiemann@hopecls.ca.

Project HELLO connects homeless

T
hey may not have homes, but most have families they love and miss. Homeless people in the Tri-Cities had an opportunity to send Christmas cards to long-lost loved ones last week, thanks to the volunteer efforts of local students. Through Project HELLO — which stands for Helping Everyone Locate Loved Ones — a group of Dr. Charles Best Secondary students headed to the cold wet weather mat program armed with a stack of handmade cards. These colourful creations were crafted by Heritage Elementary students, who jumped onboard with the heartfelt cause. Just as they did last year, the Coquitlam teens handed the cards to homeless people to write messages for anyone they hope to reconnect with. School counsellor Kristi Blakeway said the group received a warm response at the cold wet weather mat program on Nov. 30. The night before, several students stood up in support of a permanent homeless shelter at the City of Coquitlam’s lengthy public hearing.
“When they got there, the clients of the shelter had heard from the people working there that our kids had gone and spoken at the city council meeting in favour of the 3030 Gordon project,” Blakeway said. “So the homeless clients were all clapping for the kids and thanking them. They had a great night. A ton of them wrote the cards, and apparently they just loved the cards from the elementary kids.” Then on Wednesday afternoon, Blakeway led four carloads of students to the Downtown Eastside to hand homeless people more than 100 cards, along with warm winter gloves. They plan to return two more times before Christmas. The students are equipped with a camera and video camera they bought with grant money, so families can receive a photo or video message along with the cards. The teens’ next task requires some detective work to find the right recipients. “Most of them don’t know the address, so they’ll just give us the name and the last city they know that the person lived in. The kids take it from there. They search through the Internet and Facebook and Canada 411 and anything they can find to track down the address,” Blakeway said. “They’re all across the country and the States. It’s
funny — quite often when people think they know where their family lives, those are the ones that are actually hardest to find. It’s like a false sense of security that they haven’t been in touch, but they think they know where their family is. When we call just to confirm the address, we find out the family moved 10 years ago or something, and it takes a while to find them.” Last Christmas, the youth sleuths reconnected 74 families. They continued their quest in the spring and summer, facilitating 11 more connections. They even fundraised money to fly a daughter from Alberta for a face-to-face reunion with her mother, a drug addict on the Downtown Eastside. Despite their best efforts, they’re still searching for about 30 recipients of lovingly written cards. However, the excitement is palpable when they find the right person. “It’s awesome. We usually do it after school, after the secretaries have left. We take over the office and everyone splits up on the phones,” Blakeway said. “You can tell when someone’s made a connection because they’re loud and crazy and celebrating.” Project HELLO recently won a 2010 Solicitor General Community Safety and Crime Prevention Award in the category of youth leadership.

Sonata advances in technology editorial@thenownews.com
We already know that Hyundai is now able to hang with the best in terms of quality and durability. More recently, it stepped up the style side of its business with some dazzling new designs, like the Tucson and Sonata. And its Canadian auto sales have surged to record heights. Now the Korean automaker moves on to a new and a very significant stage in its rapid development. No longer content to be a technology follower, Hyundai steps forward as a
technology leader. Hyundai has just pulled the wraps off two new editions of the already released 2011 Sonata, its popular mid-sized sedan. Instead of the usual top-line V-6 engine offering, however, Hyundai has opted for a high-tech alternative: a new direct-injection, turbocharged four-cylinder. And the other new Sonata is a very interesting hybrid powertrain version — another first for Hyundai. The new engine can produce more power than the old Sonata V-6, and uses less fuel. It uses an advance-design twin-scroll

turbocharger that helps the engine produce 274 horsepower at 6,000 r.p.m. and 269 lb-ft of torque from 1,800 to 4,500 r.p.m. Best of all, this engine can run on regular fuel and its consumption is rated at 9.3 L/100 km city and a very impressive six L/100 km highway. The driver can also activate an economy mode that can conserve an additional seven per cent of fuel. Although not quite as smooth as the silky old 3.3-litre V-6 in some driving situations, the extra power and fuel savings provide more than adequate compensation. It’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that has a manual mode and steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. These were fun to play with on a twisty section of our route, yet the inclusion of an automatic “sport” mode would also be nice — OK, I’m lazy. Hyundai’s first production hybrid vehicle actually surpasses the competition with a new lithium polymer battery pack and it’s the only manufacturer to offer a conventional (sixspeed) automatic transmission with a hybrid powertrain. Nickel-metal-hydride is currently the most common battery pack used in hybrid vehicles. New-generation hybrid vehicles are typically switching to lithium-ion battery technology, but the lithium polymer battery, with a gellike electrolyte, is unique to Hyundai and the Sonata. “The Sonata may be a little late to the hybrid game, but we’re bringing the best technology with us,” says John Vernile, vice-president of
marketing for Hyundai Auto Canada. “Our lithium polymer batteries leapfrog the competition. Not only are they better than the batteries in the current group of hybrids, but they’re also better than our competitor’s next-generation lithium ion batteries.” Hyundai’s hybrid blue drive architecture is a parallel hybrid drive system. It can operate solely on its electric motor or the gasoline internal combustion engine or a combination of the two. Smart engineering has allowed Hyundai to use its compact new six-speed automatic transmission and it gives the hybrid a smooth, more familiar driving experience. Cleverly teaming the functions of the hybrid starter-generator, electric motor and low-friction oil pump, Hyundai has eliminated the need for an inefficient torque converter, normally used with an automatic transmission. The two propulsion units can jointly develop a total of 209 horsepower at 6,000 r.p.m. and 195 lb-ft of torque. An ability to run on electrical power at steady highway speeds (up to 100 km/h) allows the Sonata Hybrid to get better fuel economy and an expected best-in-class highway rating of 5.4 L/100km. Hyundai may be late to hybrid school but innovative engineering jumps the Sonata Hybrid to the top of the class. The only grumble I had was with the steering feel, which is on the light side. The new turbo will join the first of these new additions to the Sonata lineup and will be in Hyundai showrooms this autumn. Its start price is $28,999 and the 2.0T limited is $31,749. You can expect Sonata Hybrid prices to be in the low- to mid-thirties.

Use ice water, or even frozen vodka, for a flaky pie crust
he fondest memory I have from my childhood involves holiday baking. Fitted with an oversized apron and a smile from ear to ear, I was six years old on a stool, rolling out pie pastry alongside my Mom. While she made the large pies for the family, I rolled out pastry for miniature imitations formed to the confines of empty metal chip-dip containers. I was very proud and happy to be part of the preparation for such a wonderful treat. Pies are a very traditional way to end a meal on certain holidays, especially at Christmastime. Pumpkin is always a favourite pie among many for the holidays, but numerous pies can and will be made and enjoyed. Pies are basically made up of a shell or crust, with a flavourful filling, and can be divided into two groups: baked or unbaked. Baked pies are obviously ones with raw pie shells that are filled and then baked. The unbaked category represents prebaked pie shells that are filled with a prepared filling and then chilled to set before serving. The pie dough that makes up these shells can also be divided into two categories: flaky dough or mealy dough. Flaky dough is usually a pastry that has
a mixture of shortening and butter that is “cut in” so there are small chunks still left in the finished product. This aids in creating steam, which helps with the leavening process and creation of the flaky texture. Mealy dough is usually made with butter that is mixed in more thoroughly, and when baked has a texture much like tender shortbread. This is because the flour particles are more coated with fat, resulting in less gluten being formed. Once you have decided on the type of crust to make, it is time to decide on the filling. Basically there are four choices: fruit, custard, cream or chiffon. Each filling requires the existence of a starch or stabilizer to ensure that it holds together when sliced. Fruit and cream fillings use starches, such as cornstarch, for their stability, while custard fillings use the stabilization of egg coagulation for their firmness. Examples of custard pies are pumpkin, pecan and key lime. Chiffon pies usually use a combination of starch or gelatin with whipped egg whites folded in. Baking is a science, and recipes are the formulas. For the reasons listed here and

Specialty teams set scene in OT Express loss Things haven’t added up well for the Coquitlam Express when they have four or fewer skaters on the ice. Whether its overtime — and four-on-four — or shorthanded, the Express have been dogged by bad luck, miscues and some strange calls. On Wednesday, it was a full complement of causes in a disheartening 5-4 overtime loss to Coastal Conference rival the Surrey Eagles. And while they were soundly outshot 43-23 on the night, and rookie netminder Khaleed Devji put in another strong performance, it came down to a penalty in extra time that had Express head coach Jon Calvano shaking his head. “It was a real disappointing performance of officiating, in my mind,” said Calvano, who has yet to see his team win in overtime. “To have the game decided on a marginal call 200-feet away in the offensive zone... It was like ‘Here we go again.’” Captain Garrick Perry was called for hooking just 27 seconds into the four-on-four session, and less than a minute later Surrey’s Riley Sweeney slid the puck under Devji for his second powerplay tally of the game. It wiped out a feisty comeback by Coquitlam, who had to erase a 4-2 deficit in the third on markers by Malcolm McKinney and Riley McIntosh to earn a single point. The Express had jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on extra-man tallies by Massimo Lamacchia and Jason Grecica before the Eagles tied it in the second. Down by two, McKinney gave Coquitlam some life midway through the third by outracing Surrey’s goalie and wrapping it past him into the open cage. McIntosh’s sixth goal of the season, five more than he scored in 182 Western Hockey League games, came on the powerplay with Grecica doing most of the hard work behind the net. Still, after seven overtime losses Calvano would like to see the puck bounce his team’s way for once. “The PK needs some work but part of that work is to stop taking unnecessary penalties.” Coquitlam hosts Langley tonight, 7 p.m. at the Sports Centre, and then Trail on Sunday (2 p.m.).

Cents, Rapids set tone at HSBC Classic Dan Olson sports@thenownews.com There’s nothing like a big show to kick off the season. As far as the Centennial Centaurs and Riverside Rapids are concerned, the bigger the better. The senior girls AAA basketball teams are 2-0 after two days of the HSBC Basketball Classic, weaving their own way to what would be a Fraser Valley North dream final. The Centaurs upset No. 5ranked Handsworth 75-67 on Wednesday, while Riverside knocked off AA’s No. 4-rated Holy Cross 69-51. Ranked 10th in the province, the Cents rode the hot shooting hand of Grade 11 Shayna Litman, who cashed in 36 points and 18 rebounds against the defending HSBC and B.C. champions. “The girls showed a lot of determination to get the win,” said Cents coach Rob Sollero. “I thought we made nice adjustments with our zone defence. “Offensively, we were able to get Shayna the ball in the paint and she was able to carry the load inside and Cassie Sparvier converted many of her chances.” Lauren Sollero and Sparvier each chipped in 13 points. Centennial took a two-point lead at the half and cracked it open to 69-52 before Handsworth made a late rally. Creating a lot of space and offensive flow with their speed were Olivia Aguiar and Shanice Fuoco-Guy, who counted 10 points. In the opener, the Centaurs blasted Byrne Creek 82-42, behind player-of-the-game Lauren Sollero’s 21 points and 12 assists. COQUITLAM METRO-FORD SOCCER PLAYERS OF THE WEEK JOVAN BLAGOJEVIC
Coquitlam Metro-Ford WOLVES
The Metro-FordWolves recently reached the half-way mark of theVMSL Premier Division season, boasting a record of 11 victories, 3 ties, and only one loss. This remarkable start to the season places the Wolves all alone in first place, ahead of very strong and experienced teams, like Surrey United, West Van FC, Delta United, and Columbus FC. Led by veterans Andrew Veer, Brook Scott, Russel Huggon, Alfredo Valente, and Emilio Bottiglieri, the numerous youngsters on the team have acclimatized themselves quickly to the more physical aspects of the men’s game. Leading the young ‘revolution’ is 19year old JOVAN BLAGOJEVIC who has quickly become one of the Wolves’ standouts this season. Playing in a wide midfield role, Jovan has scored 6 goals so far this season, some of them in spectacular fashion. This past Tuesday, Blagojevic notched both goals in a 2-0 victory over the Sapperton Rovers and then proceeded to score once—and set up two other goals—on Sunday in a very important 3-1 victory over the red-hot Delta United. For his brilliant performance this past week, JOVAN BLAGOJEVIC has been chosen as Coquitlam Metro-Ford Male Player-of-the-Week.

As mentioned earlier, Gina is the captain of the Kaos and has led her team to its amazing success with her positive attitude, her hard work, and her immense skills. In addition, Gina participated in the Canadian National championships this fall with the Under 18 Silence and has been called up to play on the Metro-Ford Women’s Premier team on numerous occasions. Cancer June 21-July 22: Tackle chores, but make sure directions are clear, pieces are not missing, etc. Don’t start major tasks or projects before Dec. 30. This is a work month, and a health period, so dress for the season, eat well and get your sleep. Relationships intensify all month. Sweet romantic feelings and ambition/lust mingle. An ex might appear. (This is short, perhaps gone by next week). Overall, this week’s smooth. The only possible major problem might appear Saturday – drive carefully, protect sensitive equipment (e.g., computers) be safe around electricity. Gentle, wise love Sunday/Monday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Many ideas/impulses might come to start anew Sunday/Monday, especially in intimate, sexual, financial, investment, relationship and lifestyle areas. Let these stew until late December – they are deep, valid new directions, but they need subconscious gestation. Meanwhile, avoid starting anything new (even forming plans) before Dec. 30.Tuesday’s barriers might show you why. Your romantic mood continues – and it might get a gratifying answer Wednesday! Show bosses how reliable and energetic you can be Thursday to Saturday. That last night, happiness, social delights float toward you! Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: A period of delay, indecision, mistakes and missThe emphasis continues on home, property, security, kids, gardening, soul, stomach, nutrition. This is your usual hibernation period, and since new starts are ill-advised before Dec. 30, this would be a great time to get sluggish and slow. You’ll be tempted to end some associations now, but you might regret it later, so wait until after Dec. 29. Communications are affectionate and gracious, travel brings beauty and peace, despite any glitches. Your romantic side simmers, surfacing as excitement Sunday/Monday, meeting obstacles Tuesday, finding gentle wisdom Thursday/Friday.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Start nothing new before Dec. 30. Protect ongoing projects from mistakes and delays. Reprise projects and relationships from the past, especially in career. (A propos career, higher-ups, parents and VIPs are testy all month, so be diplomatic, eager, honest. Take criticism goodnaturedly.) This is an enjoyable, mellow week. Love might visit you in person, or merely in your thoughts. A particular kind of stress, medical condition or abrupt surprise in relationships that has dogged you for seven years occurs again Friday/Saturday – for the LAST time this lifetime! Grab success Wednesday! Taurus April 20-May 20: Life’s mysteries continue. Research will turn up nuggets, give you insights. Usually this is a good time for investments, intimate commitments, lifestyle changes and health cures/ diagnosis. However, you should avoid anything new in these. Re-diagnosis of an old condition, or grabbing an investment that passed you by formerly, anything attached to the past in this way, can be a good opportunity. But start nothing brand new before Dec. 30. Double-check all facts, figures. Avoid all legal hassles and foreign travel until mid-January. Others treat you with affection all month. Gemini May 21-June 20: Relationships predominate. New meetings, new opportunities and new horizons confront you, but everything new is flawed, if you meet it before Dec. 30. If career/ business opportunities return from the past, then they qualify as “valid” – but former (and new) relationships face pretty gigantic problems. For example, anyone you met in 2010 – and to some degree since 2003 – will always try to dominate you. Patience is best, especially since truly compatible people will appear very soon, in 2011. Be ambitious Monday. Happiness and poor luck Tuesday; happiness and good luck Wednesday!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Start nothing new before Dec. 30. Stick with the ongoing, or reprise the past. Paradoxically, many new little projects or tasks seem to begin during a work-oriented Sunday/ Monday. Well, keep it small (doing dishes OK; buying a new dishwasher not). Fuse old things into the new, especially at home. Relationships strain your goodwill Tuesday, but reward you nicely Wednesday. Mysteries, temptations, finances, gossip draw you Thursday to Saturday: there’s success in these, but it might all end with a sudden split, tension or event. Hmm. Travel all week. Satisfy your curiosity! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Stick with ongoing projects and relationships – reject the new before Dec. 30. This is a splendid time to remember old friends, family – buy cards for those you haven’t in the past, buy little mementoes, etc. (Xmas shopping is OK, because it’s a repetition for most of us; but avoid big items. Purchase those after Dec. 30.) We all fall in love eventually: your big event is likely 2011 onward, but it might be now. Sunday/Monday tease your romantic side. Still, don’t confuse sensuality with affection. Work, mid-week. Exciting meetings, Thursday onward. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: All 2010 features endings and new beginnings. These hit two peaks: last March, and this Sunday/Monday. But how does that fit in with a period (Dec. 10 to 29) in which you should not be starting anything? Further, at least five “starts” are indicated now. The present “start nothing” period is naturally nostalgic, so it might be bringing things from the past, lingering tendrils, frayed ends, and asking you to fuse them together into a new beginning – or to restart something old. This might occur on a sub-conscious or conscious level. Love meets obstacles Tuesday, green lights Wednesday!

Dec. 12 - Dec. 18 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Start nothing new before Dec. 30.You might hear from old acquaintances Sunday/Monday, or get the urge to write/call them. Do so, results will be fine. Follow your curiosity these two days. Explore unfamiliar neighbourhoods, figuratively perhaps. Life stops you short Tuesday – it wants you to rest. That’s better than losing your temper. Secrets, security quests succeed Wednesday. Though it’s a week of rest, privacy and contemplation, romantic desires/moods steal over you Thursday to Saturday. Romance’s sister, Creativity, might be a better date. Practise safety late week. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Your mood remains upbeat, yourpopularity’sstrong, hopesbuoyyoursteps, and life offers parties, entertainment, light flirtation. But don’t start any major projects or relationships before Dec. 30. A money situation or puzzle – perhaps with roots in last March – begins to gel, and a subtle but significant new path, new direction, begins to form. Odd that it takes place in a “backward-biased” period, but this seems more oriented toward healing the old than forming the new. Focus on this Sunday/ Monday. Mid-week’s active: have a list. Steer toward home, family Thursday onward. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Your energy and charisma surge upward Sunday/Monday. Trends are hitting “deep notes” or significant turning points, in career, worldly status, relations with governments or large companies, institutions, and in social life. Take a minute to contemplate your life, your path. In general, you should not start anything new, especially in relationships, before Dec. 30. But life might be starting some things for you; and if you can’t trust life, what can you trust? Go with the flow. Money has problems Tuesday, successes Wednesday. Be curious but safe Thursday onward. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
