Volunteers transform home, life

t was a heartfelt homecoming for Chantal Beaudoin when she set her sights on her revamped bungalow.

Her aging Port Moody house was transformed through a 12-day extreme home makeover, courtesy of Cornerstone Seventh Day Adventist Church and more than 200 volunteers.

Through the annual Home Team project, a group of tradespeople volunteer their expertise to overhaul a home for a family in need. Beaudoin and her 10year-old son Taylor were selected for this year’s royal treatment. And their first glimpse of the remodelled home sent them reeling.

On Tuesday, Oct. 12, the Grace Campus of Northside Foursquare Church will open its doors for Tri-

Cities Connect Day 2010, an event geared for people who are homeless or are facing homelessness.

The Tri-Cities Homelessness Task Group is offering the free event during Homelessness Action Week in partnership with the education community, local businesses and social agencies.

During Connect Day, a volunteer will meet with each homeless person to help prioritize personal needs.

Services will include vision screening and eye health assessments, foot care and hygiene kits. Mental health and addictions counselling will also be available, as well as outreach services, income assistance intake, legal advice and advocacy. As well, volunteers will provide employment counselling and help with resumés, letter writing and reconnection with families.

The event will also feature books

and library services, haircuts, clothing, food hampers and bike repairs, along with a free lunch and live music.

“This is a terrific way for the community to work together to improve people’s lives,” Tri-Cities Homelessness Task Group chair Sandy Burpee said in a press release.

Tri-Cities Connect Day 2010 will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2606 Kingsway Ave. in PoCo.

The anticipated open date is 2014.

“There’s 1,300 or 1,400 kids that are going to be impacted by that. There’s a loss of practice space for football. There’s going to be some things that need to be looked after,” Derpak said.

“There’s going to be noises and there’s going to be upsets.

But … the purpose we’re doing this for is to try to provide a seismically safe school

for students. By doing it the way we’re doing it, it will be the shortest possible construction period. So we have to suffer through this to get what we need, which is a safe school.”

Board chair Melissa Hyndes thanked members of the public for showing their support.

“In my opinion, the writing is on the wall as far as this is concerned, for myself,” Hyndes said.

“The overwhelming support for Poirier paints a clear picture for me. Even though I know that both sites could accommodate it, I think that Poirier is the right decision.”

The other eight trustees

agreed, drawing applause from a crowd gathered at the school board office.

Winslow resident Steve Bailey is pleased with the outcome.

“I think keeping the school near the sports facility and library is a wise decision.

Centennial students are using that library all the time.

They’re serious about what they’re doing there. They’re doing research and reading. I think that’s a good community resource for them.

“In terms of the Austin Heights neighbourhood redevelopment plan, this is a wise decision too because we want to preserve some green

space,” Bailey said Thursday.

“The board did a great job of listening to the public. I think they got the message that this wasn’t a NIMBY thing, but that it was a real concern for education.”

“The families of each victim have been contacted and informed of these criminal charges,” he said in a release.

“I can’t imagine how the families would feel, after the murders of their loved ones, about unsettling new allegations such as these.”

Detachment launches website

Coquitlam Mounties want to click with their community.

The Coquitlam RCMP has launched a new detachment-based website allowing Tri-Cities residents to have a glimpse into some of the work the local force does in the community.

As of Wednesday, residents will be able to visit the Coquitlam detachment’s site to review information like which criminals are currently wanted on warrants and volunteer opportunities in the community.

“Anyone working in policing knows that our success depends on our ability to connect with the broader community,” said Supt. Claude Wilcott. “The website is about using a new tool to strengthen our connection with citizens we

already have contact with and to connect with citizens that we don’t have much contact with right now. Our goal is to reach out to people in their own time and space and provide relevant, useful information that they can’t get anywhere else.”

Details on crime reduction strategies and crime prevention tips will also be available.

“The website is an exciting first step into the world of online engagement for us,” said Wilcott, “and we are really depending on our citizens to visit the site and give us feedback to help us make it an effective tool for them as well as for us.”

A former B.C. coroner is facing charges relating to inappropriate examination of the remains of two homicide victims, including one in Coquitlam.

Kenneth Glen Mattinson, 61, from Chilliwack, was charged Wednesday with two counts of offering an indignity to human remains and two counts of breach of trust by a public officer.

The charges arose from two homicide cases that occurred

a year and a half ago.

On March 14, 2009, police were called to a homicide scene in Langley.

Identification officers were collecting evidence at the scene when one officer noticed something that concerned him.

He saw “what appeared to be a pattern of questionable and possibly criminal behaviour by the coroner,” according to Sgt. Peter Thiessen of the Lower Mainland district RCMP regional service.

The officer alerted an Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT)

“In one case on the Mary Hill Bypass, one of our officers clocked a motorcycle at more than 100 km/h over the limit, in a 70 km/h zone,” Paquet said, adding that the fine increased to $500 in that instance.

“It’s a three-month pilot project. We’ll see how it works and other people can try it,” Cartwright said.

“Then possibly we could get a pilot project to go into all liquor establishments in Coquitlam.

“We’ve had discussions with our local RCMP, and they’ve been really, really helpful.

“We’re just going to have to reinvent our business.”

We deserve SkyTrain Re: “SkyTrain is too expensive,” letter to the editor, Wednesday, Oct. 6.

Roque Langone thinks we shouldn’t spend the money on the Evergreen SkyTrain because he is concerned about the cost.

First of all, nobody thinks the LRT is better than SkyTrain. It is just another bus-like vehicle running on the same congested streets.

If LRT takes up a special lane, we will lose a lane for all other traffic. I don’t see To The how that is going to improve traffic. We may as well just give the existing bus a special lane and save the money.

Secondly, I personally think the SkyTrain lines are very beautiful. Mr. Langone’s so-called “massive grey dull concrete” is actually the freeways (if we don’t build SkyTrain lines).

As to the SkyTrain’s cost, I think he is misled by some opponents claiming that we don’t have the

money. In fact, there is money for it. It is just allocation of the funds.

If money is not spent on the Evergreen Line in Coquitlam, many other municipalities already have their own transportation projects that will use up this money.

Current opponents against the Evergreen Line are mostly residents of these other areas looking to replace our SkyTrain with their own neighbourhood systems.

Editor We have waited long enough for our SkyTrain in the Tri-Cities.

We deserve it as much as Richmond or UBC. Note: I am glad nobody is suggesting we simply build bike lanes in the Tri-Cities and everyone ride bicycles to save costs.

Small businesses worth celebrating

A

ll hail the small business.

For the past four years, October has been set aside as Small Business Month

in B.C. The aim is to raise awareness of the large role that small businesses play in the province’s economy — a role that, collectively, stands in marked contrast to the size of the individual players.

For instance, there were nearly 400,000 small businesses operating in B.C. in 2009.

According to B.C. government statistics, that represented a three-per-cent increase from 2008, despite the relatively unhappy global economic climate that prevailed throughout last year.

Nearly 60 per cent of jobs in the province’s private sector are provided through small business operations — that’s nearly six of every 10 people employed in the private sector throughout British Columbia.

Furthermore, about one of every five workers in B.C. is self-employed, the highest rate of self-employment in Canada.

The bottom line is that small businesses provide gainful employment to more than a million British Columbians.

The Tri-Cities, like communities throughout B.C., are home to hundreds of small businesses, as well as to the entrepreneurs who make the entire province’s economy plough through tough times and grow when the climate is more amenable.

Those entrepreneurs are your next-door neighbours and your friends, and probably number among the members of your family.

They keep B.C. — and the people who call this province home — working.

They’re worth celebrating, and the small businesses they operate are worth promoting through October.

If you’re looking for a way to help, it’s as easy as patronizing some of these businesses, whether they’re in NewPort Village or on Austin Avenue. You’ll be helping them, and helping strengthen your community.

While TransLink has been allocated ownership of the roads, one would assume that the province could use its authority in the matter and provide upfront funding, while TransLink could pay it back over time using a system more manageable to TransLink.

Furthermore, if the MCC isn’t started prior to the Evergreen Line, or at the very least a part of the overall project, then I am of the opinion that the MCC will cease to ever be constructed because I cannot see the participating players spending at least $1.4 billion (90 per cent of which is taxpayer funded) on a project that only becomes profitable and maintains viability when individuals leave their cars behind, to one that encourages individuals to stay in their cars because driving through the St. Johns corridor would be made easier.

While it is understood that more cities will be impacted by the Evergreen Line, I feel that the costto-benefit ratio for the MCC is greater, and I hope that our elected MPs, city councillors, and MLAs for that matter, recognize the importance of the implementation of the MCC project to the northeast sector.

The money for this project is there, so let’s put party politics aside and make it happen.

Evergreen Line not the way to go Re: “Evergreen open houses scheduled,” Wednesday, Oct. 6.

Another round of open house meetings will not change my disapproval of the Evergreen Line.

The noble intentions of this line are inadequate to justify its cost.

There To The Editor are about 214,000 people in the Tri-Cities area and with transit use at 15 per cent, the maximum average ridership will be about 32,000 per day.

With a $1.4-billion price tag, that means the Evergreen Line will cost about $44,000 per rider.

I am sure many new cars can be bought at that price or less.

Transit is supposed to be less than car use, not equal or more.

I am doubtful that ridership will increase even upon the line’s completion. The Evergreen Line is useless to people in the southernmost part of Coquitlam and will have to compete with Highway 1 expansion when it’s complete.

The Millenium Line is accessible to some Tri-Cities residents and with riders from other areas, its average daily ridership is at 60,000.

This is far below the 100,000 mark needed to be cost effective and after nine years in service, it will be many more years before it gets

The discussion around the Evergreen Line has been interesting reading.

We are fortunate to have heard from three politicians, Fin Donnelly, James Moore and Diana Dilworth, who were eager to share their opinions regarding the topic.

Fin Donnelly, NDP MP for New

Westminister-Coquitlam and Port Moody, was advocating on behalf of his constituents in his column of Sept. 24.

In summarizing the column, Mr. Donnelly was reiterating the views shared by many citizens in the communities of Port Moody and Coquitlam. For that reason, he is launching a “Fund the Gap, Build the Line” campaign in his riding inviting constituents to sign on to his petition — a noble attempt to bring attention to the Evergreen Line’s funding problem.

James Moore, MP for Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam, could not pass up political posturing, as he was quick with his letter stating he was “frustrated by politicians [NDP] who mislead the public and vote against funding.”

One is left wondering who is doing the “misleading”?

Rather than the partisan attack from the “Honourable Minister,” this could have been a unique opportunity for Mr. Moore and Mr. Donnelly to work together in bringing closure to the funding gap.

This would have been a rare statesman opportunity.

It was interesting that Ms. Diana Dilworth, a Port Moody councillor, adopted a me-too position.

Her lack of information regarding Mr. Donnelly’s work in Parliament indicates that she is uninformed.

She should refer to the edited Hansard No. 126 on Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, or the edited Hansard No. 52 on Monday, May 31, 2010, to discover that Mr. Donnelly has spoken in Parliament on the topic of the Evergreen Line.

My understanding is that Ms. Dilworth is hoping to challenge Mr. Donnelly in the next federal election. If that is the case, I might suggest that she obtain all the information prior to making misleading statements.

As always, politics in British Columbia continues to be a combat sport. I suggest that on this issue, everyone should be unified in finding a productive solution that will solve the problem. The goal is to finance and build the Evergreen Line.

Want to grow herbs indoors? Try mint or parsley

eople who dream of livening up winter meals by adding a few fresh herbs can do just that by growing them in pots on windowsills in winter. Shadetolerant herbs like mint, chervil and parsley are the easiest to start with because they’ll accept even a north-facing window.

Mediterranean herbs such as rosemary, oregano and thyme are fussier. For them, a south- or west-facing window can work well in early and late winter, especially if windows are kept sparkling clean outside and inside and the weather is unusually sunny.

But in mid-winter as daylength shortens, sun-loving herbs and even those that prefer shade may look unwell, become long and spindly then stop growing. This is a typical response of many indoor plants during late December and January. Growth resumes as day length increases.

Some gardeners continue snipping herbs until the plants are little stubs, while others let them rest and a few put them under a fluorescent grow light for a few weeks.

Not everyone realizes that rosemary makes a beautiful year-round houseplant, especially if you select a compact kind such as blue boy, which can reach 60 centimetres (24 inches), but usually doesn’t if there’s a cook in the house.

Concert celebrates Czech and Slovak music V

iolinist Roger Mangas and pianist Monica Pfau will kick off Place des Arts’ 201011 faculty concert season with A Celebration of Czech Music II on Saturday, Oct. 16.

Scheduled for 7:30 p.m. in the Leonore Peyton Salon, the show will feature music native to both the Czech and Slovak cultures, including Antonin Dvorák’s Romantic Pieces, Leoš Janácek’s Dumka, Jan Foerster’s Ballad and Sonatas by Bohuslav Martinu and Vítezslav Novák.

A longtime faculty member at Place des Arts, Mangas teaches private lessons at the centre John on top of heading up the string quartet. Pfau, meanwhile, has done guest spots for the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, the National Film Board of Canada and on CBC Radio.

Tiny fundraiser goes big Six-year-old Morgan Perkins is following in the fundraising footsteps of Port Coquitlam’s hometown hero.

Morgan, a Grade 1 student at Glen Elementary, raised more than $1,100 for this year’s Terry Fox Run — nearly one third of the school’s $3,699 total.

“It’s so we can get rid of cancer for whoever gets it,” he said.

The reality of cancer is close to home for his family. That was the inspiration behind Morgan’s fundraising efforts, which also brought in $830 for last year’s Terry Fox Run. “When he was four, his grandpa was diagnosed with cancer. He saw his grandpa go through treatment and get sicker. But then he

got better and, in Morgan’s words, beat cancer,” said Morgan’s mom, Erica.

“So he understands the value of the medicine and equipment the doctors need. And he understands that when Terry Fox had cancer, the medicines weren’t there to help him. He sees the difference that his grandpa could beat cancer and be healthy today.”

Morgan plans to continue supporting the cause next year and beyond.

“The night before the run, we were talking about Terry Fox and he said to me, ‘You know what, Mom? When I get big, I’m going to run across Canada for cancer’ … We’re really proud of him,” Erica said.

“What I’m hoping is that over the years, he starts to have the skills to raise the money totally on his own doing bottle drives and those sorts of things because it seems like it’s important to him.”

Biologist Owain McKibbin will present a slideshow on the western rattlesnake and describe the studies he has conducted to aid in the recovery of this endangered species.

McKibbin has been working with wildlife for the last 30 years throughout his native South Africa and in Western Canada.

wareness of different cancers is on the rise and the overwhelming amount of information that exists on cancer-preventive food and vitamins has many Canadians confused about what exactly they should be eating.

When it comes to cancerfighting nutrition, my philosophy is to keep it simple

and embrace your cause.

The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation advocates for a balanced diet that is high in fruits, vegetables and whole grains, as well as low in fat and sugar to help maintain a healthy body weight, which is linked to lowering the risk for breast cancer.

Whole grain foods play a key role in leading a healthy lifestyle because they contribute to your vitamin, mineral and fibre intake.

Make sure at least half of your daily grain products are whole grain. Know that not all grain products are whole grain, so read the label. Look for “whole grain” as the first ingredient in the ingredient list.

Eating across the food rainbow is vital.

Fill up with as many of these cancer-reducing foods as you can: broccoli, blueberries, tomatoes, garlic, brussels sprouts, dark leafy greens, cabbage, soy, cherries, cranberries, green tea, whole grains, beans, herbs and

spices, and other red, orange and purple fruits, vegetables and berries.

I always look for food products that support breast cancer research, a cause close to my heart.

Country Harvest, for example, is donating a portion of the proceeds from all products sold during the month of October to the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Their breads, bagels and wraps are made with whole grains and are a source of omega-3.

The standard four-wheel-drive system is an all-mode system with four-high and four-low modes, in addition to a fully automatic all-wheel-drive mode. This system is designed to distribute torque to all four wheels when road conditions warrant and up to 50 per cent can go to the front wheels on demand.

The 2011 QX is also built on a new high-stiffness frame structure that is designed to enhance its ride comfort while also reducing noise, vibration and harshness transmitted to the passenger cabin.

A unique new feature of QX is a hydraulic body motion control system, which is included in an optional technology package ($8,000) that also includes 22-inch wheels and a number of other features. An inter-connected hydraulic damping system adjusts roll stiffness by transferring fluid between the left and right sides of the vehicle. It also helps reduce bump shock by setting bounce and roll damping forces separately.

The new QX also offers an amazing range of advanced active safety technology systems. These include lane departure warning, lane departure prevention and around view monitor systems. You can also add blind spot warning and distance control assist.

The 2011 QX is only offered as an Infiniti QX56 four-wheel drive and comes in both seven- and eight-passenger versions.

My test QX came with the technology package and an all-in (before tax) price of $82,900.

The new QX takes on to the wave-design theme that Infiniti has adopted in recent years. This is especially evident in its contoured hood, the double-arch front grille and its smoother lines with more rounded corners.

While the mellow and aerodynamic styling lines tend to make it look smaller, it’s actually a little longer than the previous generation QX. It is also lower, wider and lighter, plus its wheelbase has been lengthened by 35 mm.

A high beltline with blacked-out roof pillars gives it a more interesting side view. It also has an engine air intake on the driver’s side front fender and LED taillights at the back.

As is generally the case in three-row seating arrangements, the first two rows get the lion’s share of the space available, and the QX is no different.

What is different is access and convenience of the third row

seat usage.

The right side second row seat folds, then flips forward, and this can be performed by pressing a switch on the dash.

The third row seats can also be remotely powered up and down via switches in the cargo area, and even the rear liftgate is power operated.

Standard features you won’t find in most SUVs include aircraft style (seven-inch) colour monitors in the front seatbacks and the rear passengers can use them to play from different sources at the same time.

A hard drive based navigation system is also standard, as is a Bose 13-speaker audio system, tri-zone climate control and

perforated leather seating surfaces with both heat and cooling functions up front and heaters in the second row seats.

New advanced safety systems available on the QX include advanced intelligent cruise control, distance control assist, intelligent brake assist with forward collision warning, front pre-crash seatbelts and hill start assist.

With all these systems it may sound like the QX is akin to driving the space shuttle, but it’s not. The protective systems are only there when you need them and for the most part QX is a very easy vehicle to drive, considering its large dimensions.

hese days it’s all about saving money, and the world of wine is no different.

A few years back consumers had no problem spending $15 to $20 on a good bottle of wine. These days the rage is to find a good bottle for less than $10.

A few weeks ago a wine shopper told me she would never buy a wine for under $10 a bottle because it was sure to be an awful wine. She just needed a bit of guidance, and I suggested a few of my favourites.

A few days ago I saw her again and she told she me no longer thought bad things about an under-$10 selection and she could not believe the wine had tasted so good.

The trick to finding these picks is to know how wine companies operate. Large wineries tend to spend a lot of money on advertising and promotion to promote their brands, so the wine qualityto-price ratio is sometimes lacking.

There are exceptions to this rule, but for the most part the gems lie in wines and wineries you may have never heard of before.

REAL ESTATE Tips on selecting deck stain Whether it’s where you sip your morning coffee, host a family gathering or spend time relaxing, a wood deck can extend your living space to the great outdoors and into the fresh air.

However, keeping a deck in shape and inured to weather’s wear can be a challenge.

“It’s a matter of protecting the wood, not just beautifying it,” said Carl Minchew, director of product development for Benjamin Moore Paints.

He says to look for a stain product that can effectively guard against the two major culprits affecting wood decks — water and UV rays.

According to Minchew, the newest stain from Benjamin Moore, Arborcoat, not only is an advanced technology for preserving wood, it also is exceptionally “green” and qualifies as an innovation coup.

“It just makes good sense that if you’re staining your outdoors deck or the exterior siding of your home, to use a product that’s respectful of the environment,” said Minchew.

For those who prefer to have the natural colour and texture of the wood showing through, Minchew recommends transparent, semi transparent or a protective clear coat. The acrylic protective clear coat can help defend against scuffs, scratches and the punishing conditions of the outdoors.

For those wanting to completely mask the wood grain but retain textural qualities, there is a choice of semi-solid

or solid finishes. Semi-solid is available in 75 popular colours; solid in any of Benjamin Moore’s 1,800 hues.

Minchew also cautions that proper preparation is the ultimate determinant of how long the beauty of a staining job will last. Also remember that the natural colour or grain pattern of the wood itself can greatly influence the final colour.

Panthers play catchup in two comeback wins The easy thing to do would have been to simply fold up like a cheap tent and pack it in.

Instead, the Port Moody Black Panthers rolled up their collective sleeves and applied some good old-fashioned elbow grease.

Trailing off the hop in both of last weekend’s contests, the Port Moody crew bounced back from early deficits to defeat Ridge Meadows 5-4 on Friday and the Delta Ice Hawks 3-2 one day later.

“Hockey is a game of bounces — sometimes they go your way and sometimes they don’t,” Port Moody coach Ron Johnson said of his team’s two early holes. “It’s a game of mistakes, and they capitalized on theirs. It took us a while to get going, but then we got going and then capitalized on their mistakes.”

The two wins put the Black Panthers into a second-place tie with the Flames in the Harold Brittain Conference, and upped the club’s record to 3-3-2.

The Oct. 1 matchup saw the Panthers down 3-1 after the first 20 minutes, with the Flames tallying the game’s opening marker off a powerplay at 8:40.

But Port Moody replied with some special teams magic of their own in the following two periods, as three of the club’s four goals came with the man advantage.

“Before, everybody was putting the emphasis on themselves to try and score [on the powerplay],” Johnson of his club’s powerplay efficiency.

“It’s perhaps a little selfish, but with the right intentions.

What we’ve started to do is move the puck a lot more, and try and make each other a little bit better. We’re sharing the puck a bit more, and we’re shooting the puck a little bit more.

I

n the year of the tiger, Port Coquitlam’s Melanie Phan is earning her stripes.

The 17-year-old athlete has travelled far and accomplished a lot. And it has only whetted her appetite for achievements in the future.

Along with a host of medals, her skill in taekwondo has helped drive the teenager to international competitions and national titles.

What it all comes down to, though, is just a basic passion for the sport.

The Riverside Secondary student returned last month from a whirlwind month-long Asia tour that started in Korea and ended in Singapore at the inaugural Youth Olympics.

That’s where the talented taekwondo athlete pieced together a strong run that earned her the bronze.

“So far the junior Olympics tops it,” Phan says of her biggest meet of a very busy year. “It’s so different, the environment — there’s only one stage and one ring. You walk out and your name gets called, ‘Representing Canada, Melanie Phan.’ It’s amazing, the best.”

The August competition ended in a 49-kilogram division bronze medal for the Tae Geuk Taekwondo member.

Facing Thailand’s Wora Pongpanit, Phan was energized and ready for a key match.

The two sparred even, with Phan tying it 4-4. In sudden death overtime with the next blow a key to the final, neither fighter was able to score a definitive blow. Left to the judges’ discretion, the Thai fighter was given the win.

In the two years of training with the junior Olympics in mind, a bronze medal was not where she had set her sights.

Although the end result was immediately disappointing, Phan absorbed an important lesson that she will apply to future showdowns. It will also be converted into more motivation for a better result next time.

“Once they gave it to her, I was like ‘Ah.’ Inside it really burned. When I saw other people, who were leaving without medals, they just left with their experience so I saw it as good. I was happy, content, but I wasn’t satisfied because I knew that should have been me. It was a huge learning experience.”

A key part of her journey, the actual brief time in the Singapore ring was dwarfed by the sweat, toil and discipline that was required to get there. The qualifier was in Mexico last March, and prior to that was a top-five finish at the Junior Pan Am championships in El Salvador.

There were also tournaments in Germany and the Netherlands, plus national championships. All of that competition, and the training, proved to be a good investment, she says.

“Even at the qualifiers I was nervous, the butterflies were going. But step by step, I’m not thinking about the result, but more of the process, what I have to do now,” Phan said.

“I was really nervous with the first (Youth Olympics) fight, I was like ‘I’ve got to get this done and good to move on.’ I was nervous being my first fight in the Olympics. Once I won [the first match] it was such a huge relief, like everything was now clear.”

She defeated an Egyptian competitor 7-1, then was faced with a vocal crowd supporting her Singaporean rival in the quarterfinal. While briefly rattled, the Canadian ended up using that intensity to her advantage.

“As I went in and bowed, I only heard ‘Singapore, Singapore’ — everyone was cheering. It was hard, it was constantly in my head but I eventually blocked it. I was like ‘No, this is mine.’”

Making it hers has been how Phan has survived and thrived in the sport over the years.

She was signed up by her father at the age of eight, following her cousins who were enjoying the sparring and vocal jousting that is part of the sport.

“I didn’t spar right away, but I did self-defence and patterns,” she recalls.

“I really enjoyed it, then I found out there was the sparring side, and I just loved it even more. [In sparring], there’s the adrenalin, learning new things.”  CONTINUED ON PAGE 27, see BRAZIL.

The Panthers found themselves in familiar territory one day later, and were trailing the Ice Hawks 2-0 after a first period that saw Port Moody outshot 17-9.

The stat line after the second period — 3-2 Port Moody, with the Panthers outshooting Delta 24-9 — would suggest

that perhaps some choice words were used in the Port Moody dressing room after the first period to instigate that type of swing.

Not so, says Johnson.

“It’s not strong words.

It’s making the players realize that they’re playing the greatest game on the planet … Hockey is a game that demands hard work and respect. Our guys weren’t doing that. The biggest difference is in the attitude — you can say ‘I can win’ or you can say ‘I will win.’ They did that.”

“When it comes to getting motivated and knowing what it takes to win in junior hockey, a lot of the younger players haven’t quite figured out that level of intensity yet. Then they get into the fray, and they realize what it takes to win and that’s what happened [against Delta],” Johnson said.

Halfway point of season helps separate the pack The midway point of the senior boys soccer season features few surprises in the way of positioning as teams head into the stretch drive.

Last year’s top two clubs — Charles Best and Centennial — are very much in the hunt for a final-four playoff spot in the North zone, while Port Moody and Terry Fox are also in the mix.

The Ravens bolstered their fourth-place spot in the nine-team loop with Tuesday’s 3-2 win over Westview, a contest that should have been in the bag after Fox initially carried the possession and jumped out to a 2-0 lead.

“In the first half we were pretty dominant.

There were several chances that we didn’t cash in on which came back to kind of hurt us in the second half,” said Fox coach John Murphy.

“We were up 2-0, but we didn’t come out the way we wanted to in the second half, and unfortunately they popped two on us.”

Grade 11 centre midfielder Ryan Sclater cashed in both Ravens goals off throw-ins from Matt Trimble, and the two markers came in the 10th and 24th minutes.

Wanting to spread out the playing time, Murphy opted for a number of substitutions at the half that backfired, allowing the Westview side to quickly counter with a pair of markers of their own.

“Unfortunately things kind of fell apart there when we tried to make some changes.

We had to go back to the starting lineup and unfortunately that didn’t work either,” Murphy said. “We made a few tweaks and calmed things down, and then for the last 15 to 17 minutes, we could have made it 6-2, but we missed our chances.”

Grade 12 striker Emeka Adindu scored the decisive 3-2 goal in the second half to move Fox’s record to 2-1-2.

Centennial kept its spot in the top four secure with a narrow 2-1 win over Gleneagle Tuesday, as Jason Bae and Edi Bogere provided the offence to get the Centaurs over the hump.

Though the Talons struck first in the opening five minutes, the Centaurs responded with the 1-1 goal at the seven-minute mark of the first before netting the 2-1 winner halfway though the second half.

“It was [pretty evenly matched] and it shouldn’t have been,” said Centennial coach Rob Zambrano. “We didn’t play at our best by any stretch of the imagination. But I’ve got to give it to [Gleneagle] — they played hard and they battled.”  CONTINUED ON PAGE 28, see HUGE.

Among the new things she has learned through the sport are confidence, sacrifice and resiliency. As helpful as they’ve been in her sporting life — which has seen her capture three straight junior national and two senior national taekwondo crowns — they’ve also helped her outside the ring.

“It has helped me in life, too. Coping under different stresses, like when you’re in the ring under a lot of pressure and stress. When you’re in school and doing homework and tests, it manages it.

It helps me a lot.”

Phan isn’t done yet when it comes to this year’s achievements. In December she will take her game to the Pan American Games in Brazil, where she’ll always be pushing herself and her opponent.

In the ring her polite, softspoken nature becomes more of a tiger’s roar.

“You can express exactly how you feel. I was shy at first, not ki-hopping loud,” she says, referring to the sport’s yell of power.

“But when you get into it, in the moment, you are in your zone. It’s like I don’t care whoever watches me, I’m going to show who I am in the ring.”

very night around 8 p.m., Feroza Gova and her family sit down for a big meal, often consisting of dishes made with ghee (butter), cream and salt.

“Mealtime is so important in our family, so if that means waiting to eat until everyone gets home, then so be it,” she says.

Sitting down for a big family meal isn’t typically considered ‘risky behaviour’ for young people, but for South Asians like Gova, it could lead to an early death.

Heart attacks commonly strike South Asians as young as 35 years old. In fact, it is so common that it is believed the rate of premature heart disease in South Asians could be four times higher than in other Canadians, reports RCH Cardiologist Dr. Akbar Lalani.

“We have seen a substantial increase in the number of South Asians needing cardiac care at RCH, and presenting younger and with much worse disease than the rest of the population,” says Lalani, who has worked at RCH for more than 20 years.

RCH doctors organize study on risk of heart disease amongst South Asians in B.C.

While the prevalence of heart disease is related to factors such as diet, lifestyle and genetics, it is not fully understood why the risk of this disease is so great for the South Asian community.

So RCH’s Dr. Arun Garg and Dr. Gerald Simkus are blazing a trail to find out by organizing a clinical study starting this Fall. It is the first study to be conducted on the incidence and prevalence of heart disease and its risk factors on South Asians within the B.C. population.

“There is a view that this problem exists but there is no sound data to prove it,” says Garg, Medical Director, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, Fraser Health.

“We have more coronary (heart) disease

in this region than any other region in B.C. because the South Asian population is so prominent,” says Simkus, Program Medical Director, Cardiac Sciences, Fraser Health.

Garg hopes it will yield benefits not only for South Asians across Fraser Health and the province, but across the globe.

Cathie Heritage, Executive Director for Fraser Health’s Cardiac and Renal Programs, and Burnaby Hospital, agrees.

“The outcome of this research will help ensure our clinical pathways meet the needs of the South Asian population,” Heritage says. “Fraser Health is leading the way in this regard, and will provide a map to the rest of the province around what needs to happen.”

hose who have recently visited the hospital will certainly have noticed a change in our outward office appearance. Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation has established a Wall of Thanks in the Health Care Centre lobby.

The Wall of Thanks was developed to honour and recognize donors whose generous support helps Royal Columbian Hospital save lives, restore health and provide comfort to seriously ill and injured patients of all ages.

Names of donors who have given a total of $5,000 or more, beginning in 1987, are etched into the three glass panels suspended outside the RCH Foundation office. Also included are memorial gifts, estate bequests and planned gifts.

“This wall allows us to publicly thank the many donors who have made such a positive difference in the lives of patients at Royal Columbian Hospital,” says RCH Foundation Vice-president Laurie Tetaranko.

“Not only does the wall recognize the outstanding generosity of donors, it recognizes just how proud they are of the RCH team and the work they do,” says Jason Cook, Site Director for RCH.

Dear Adrienne, Last week my son Paul (age 35), was rushed to the Emergency Department at Royal Columbian Hospital with a suspected heart attack. He was immediately sent to the cardiac unit on 2 North where tests were conducted. It turned out to be a virus that presented just like a heart attack.

A smart approach “

It’s not easy being here, as it takes me back to the time I was diagnosed,” recalls Claire Martin, CBC News Senior Meteorologist.

She is being shown RCH’s first Digital Breast Imaging machine by Breast Imaging Supervisor, Shannon Adamus. “But I know that if it weren’t for places like this, I wouldn’t be here today.”

Martin has triumphed over the breast cancer she was diagnosed with at a Vancouver hospital in November 2009, and she credits her survival to that early diagnosis. That’s why Martin and the CBC News Vancouver team have partnered with the Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society to help RCH Foundation fundraise for a second digital breast imaging machine for RCH. Funded by donor support, the first digital

breast imaging machine was installed at RCH in February 2010, and has since helped provide a smoother, less stressful experience for patients and reduced wait times for diagnostic exams. But the RCH Breast Imaging team still cannot keep up with the extraordinary demand for diagnostic breast imaging.

The RCH Breast Imaging team performs more than 4,500 diagnostic exams each year. With the acquisition of a second digital breast imaging machine and associated resources, Adamus says they can potentially double the number of patients for which they help provide diagnoses.

“You can magnify, manipulate and compare images like never before,” says Adamus. “It helps the staff work smarter, not harder.”

athleen Fyvie worked as a registered nurse (RN) in RCH’s Emergency Department for more than 20 years. She loved the fast pace and anticipation of not knowing what would come through the doors next. In 2003, she returned to university to do a Masters degree and in 2005, graduated as one of the first nurse practitioners (NP) in British Columbia.

Meanwhile, the RCH Trauma Service was being developed by Lisa Constable, Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Dr. Iain MacPhail to provide more cohesive and holistic care of trauma patients. They saw a perfect role for an NP in this innovative new service, and in 2006, Fyvie was hired as the first NP in Trauma in B.C. RCH is the only Level 1 Trauma Centre in the Fraser Health (FH) region. A multidisciplinary team treats severely injured patients suffering from life-threatening, multiple-system trauma. Not only do these patients need immediate attention, they need ongoing care that requires input from numerous specialists and

Fyvie, along with her physician partners, oversees patient care from arrival in the emergency department through to discharge home.

In addition to providing medical care to her patients, she collaborates with other healthcare providers and specialists to coordinate assistance to patients and families dealing with related issues such as psychological and emotional trauma, financial stress, substance abuse and addiction.

For patients who do not have primary care providers in the community, Fyvie also does outpatient follow-up.

The role of NP goes beyond that of a traditional RN and Fyvie is licensed to order tests, prescribe certain medications and make diagnoses. “The trauma nurse practitioner makes a lot of difference in terms of continuity and consistency of care. Kathleen provides a real advantage for the comprehensive medical management of our patients,” says Dr. Iain MacPhail, Regional Medical Director of the FH Trauma Program.
