Social media change civic landscape Tri-Cities municipalities take differing approaches to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube

T

he City of Port Moody is tiptoeing its way towards the world of Facebook friends, Twitter tweets and other online interactions. The city plans to slowly start using social media tools over the next three years, beginning with a Facebook pilot project in September. According to a staff report, participation will be limited to topics least likely to incur controversy, including job postings, program registration, event promotion and communications announcements. Then in 2011, staff will consider adding Twitter as a communications tool and will extend Facebook use to other city divisions. As well, Port Moody will pilot an online discussion forum about a citywide issue, such as the budget process, to test this social media tool. The 2011 budget process will address any additional staff resources needed to maintain these new communications processes. In 2012, Port Moody plans to introduce a similar discussion forum or blog to generate discussions about specific city issues like fire hall redevelopment. So when we decided back in 2008 that we wanted to pursue social media, it was because we were looking to connect with our residents and citizens who weren’t necessarily getting our information through other means. And that’s where I think we’ve been quite successful with it.”

L

ike Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam communicates with residents through Facebook, YouTube videos and online forums, as well as council meeting live streams. Mayor Richard Stewart said communication

methods are changing and communities need to come to grips with that shift. “Every community has to wrestle with how it can engage its citizens better today because the public is drawn in lots of directions. There are lots of messages for lots of organizations. And if we want public engagement in the important work that the city does, then we need to make sure that we meet people where they are,” Stewart said. “Communication is evolving and the leading edge evolves quickly, but it doesn’t take away from other media such as print. You wouldn’t be able to use social media exclusively. It’s one of the tools that we can use, and I think we’d be wrong to ignore it as a communications tool.”

The woman standing in front of these bears with a tripod says she did not venture too close to the animals to photograph them. NOW reader Silke Kaufmann, however, who shot this photograph, said the woman appeared to be within one to three metres (three to 10 feet) of the mother and cubs.

She’s never contributed to the death of a bear, nor has she ever approached one from an unsafe distance. She’s also prevented numerous bear maulings and, in the process, saved the lives of both humans and bears alike. Those are the sentiments of a Port Coquitlam-based wildlife photographer who was the subject of a story that appeared in the Aug. 13 edition of The NOW. The story was launched when NOW reader Silke Kaufmann photographed two people in close proximity to a female black bear and its two cubs in Minnekhada Park. Kaufmann, who said she was about 80 metres (260 feet) away when she took the photo, claimed the pair got as close as one metre (three feet) away from the bears in order to photograph them. Kaufmann also said the photographer’s male partner told her family to be quiet and stay away from the couple, so as not to disrupt their photo opportunity. Not so, says the Port Coquitlam woman, who asked to have her identity withheld when she contacted The NOW to tell her side of the story. According to the woman, she and her partner were 12 to 15 metres (40 to 50 feet) away from the bears when the photo was taken. She also suggested that Kaufmann’s photo was taken without a high-powered lens, making it “impossible” to gauge how close she and her partner were to the bears. “I have never contributed to a bear’s death. I have never walked up to a mother and two cubs, ever,” the

PoCo resident said. She also claimed that at the time the photo was taken, she and her partner were in the process of backing up from the bears, not photographing them. She added that she only began photographing the bears once they had moved to the adjacent marshlands, not while they were on the pathway. She could not provide an estimate as to how far away she was once she eventually began taking the pictures. When asked for comment on the story last week, Coquitlam’s Bear Aware coordinator Drake Stephens and B.C. Conservation Service officials told The NOW that actions like those seen in the photo can lead to bears becoming habituated to humans, which in most cases, leads to them being killed. According to the photographer, though, the bears in Minnekhada Park became accustomed to humans long before she ever photographed them. She also claims to have saved the lives of fellow photographers and others who found themselves too close to bears in the park. “There’s at least 100 photographers doing the exact same thing I’m doing every day. I don’t habituate bears. Those bears have been habituated since the park opened,”

Nicholson told The NOW Wednesday. “I think ours could be better if we got it into a less developed area, but Mundy Park is not the place — that’s quite apparent.” Fellow committee member Coun. Selina Robinson said she’s received upwards of 40 e-mails in the last week regarding the proposal, most of which were against the idea. While she liked the concept behind the plan, Robinson, like Stewart and Nicholson, suggested the city look at alternative sites. Robinson also conceded that council should have deferred the matter until after the summer break. “In hindsight, it was a terrible decision not just for residents, but for council,”

she said. Coun. Lou Sekora, on the other hand, flat out rejected the notion of an adventure playground anywhere in the city, let alone at Mundy Park. “We need to put a leash on this and kill it. I, for one, will not be supporting it,” said Sekora, who’s also a member of the recreation, sports and culture committee.

“I think we need to leave Mundy Park the way it is for the residents of this community. We don’t need to go into business there or anywhere else.” Sekora said he’s asking city staff to ensure the issue is placed on the agenda of the first committee meeting after summer break, which is slated for Sept. 13.

‘No golf course, no forest adventure playground’

Having lived on the west side of Mundy Park almost 28 years and raised a family here, I find it appalling that, with very little notification for public input, the City of Coquitlam is considering a forest adventure playground in the park. Though the city may try to assure us otherwise, a forest adventure playground will most certainly impact the ecosystems of Mundy Park. In its construction, some underbrush will need to be cleared to make the area To The accessible. Some trees will have to be removed to make clear paths for zip lines. When the playground is in use, there will be many people trampling ground and making noise. The city estimates 25,000 to 30,000 admissions per year. Over the years we have seen squirrels, snakes, raccoons with kits, skunks, deer and bears. We often see coyotes and hear them at night. This is just a small sampling of the fauna in the park. A forest adventure playground will destroy more of their territory.

Many times over the years I’ve been privileged to see herons flying over my house on their way toward Mundy Lake or Lost Lake. I doubt they’ll be impressed by the sudden movements and noise of people in the trees in the five-acre forest adventure playground. On walks in Mundy Park I’ve also encountered owls. Most of those that I’ve seen were in the treetops — the forest canopy — where the adventure playground is proposed. Editor So, rather than a commercial forest amusement playground anywhere in Coquitlam — especially in Mundy Park (wasn’t it designated an urban forest as a measure of protection?) — why doesn’t the city provide educational public nature walks that teach appreciation for, rather than harm, ecosystems and wildlife habitat? And don’t tamper with Mundy Park — no golf course, no forest adventure playground. Anne Thompson Coquitlam

Our View

Bail system doesn’t make sense

T

he story of Aleksandr Plehanov, a TriCities substitute teacher facing five counts of sexual interference, is shocking on many levels. While we extend Plehanov the same consideration we would give to any person accused of a crime — the presumption of innocence until proven guilty — we wonder why the court decided to grant him bail. Shouldn’t anyone accused of sex crimes against children be held in custody until trial due to the serious nature of the allegations? Not in the court’s view. Plehanov was originally released on a $500 recognizance, which means he wasn’t actually required to hand over $500 to the court. Nor was he required to leave a deposit or have another person agree in writing to be responsible for him until the case is over. In effect, the $500 recognizance was meaningless. After a May 13 court appearance to face a fourth count of sexual interference, Plehanov was ordered to pay a “cash bail” of $400 — meaning he did actually have to pay that amount. Four weeks later, he was back in court to face a new charge of criminal harassment. This time, the court released him on a cash bail of $1,000. When he returned to court last week to face a fifth charge of sexual interference, he was not asked to pay any more. Let’s get this straight: a person accused of five counts of sexual interference and one count of criminal harassment is asked to pay only $1,400 in bail? That hardly seems like enough considering the serious nature of the charges. The only reason we’re learning of the details of Plehanov’s bail is because the Crown wants him to forfeit the first payment of $400 for breaching the conditions of his release. So what is the point of bail anyway? If it’s to keep accused criminals on the straight and narrow while they await trial, shouldn’t the amounts be set higher for serious charges? After all, bail for disgraced cancer fundraiser Steve Fonyo was set at $20,000 after he was accused of credit card fraud. Since he couldn’t pay, he remained in custody. Of course, Fonyo has an extensive criminal record, a factor that likely influenced the amount of his bail. But really, a total of $1,400 for charges of sex crimes against children? Only in the court’s world would that amount be high enough.

There would be thousands of tourists who come and play for a day, leaving garbage behind. The community would suffer such a loss. Not everything good in life comes down to money; some things are just so much more than a dollar. Let’s hold on to this piece of heaven; a developed park would be new and fun for a season, and then we are left with a ruined piece of land and loss of wildlife. We would lose the one piece of our day that is slowed down just for us. Life is often rushed and goes by too quickly. Take a walk or a run in Mundy Park and life slows down — you can see the sunlight through the trees in summer or the fresh snow hanging on the branches in winter. There is time to enjoy a bit of your day, get some exercise and just be one with nature. Have a great run in Mundy Park. Leah Pells is a three-time Olympian and Mundy Park regular.

Lemonade stand adventure: from sublime to ridiculous Re: “Lemonade stand kids gain public support,” Friday, Aug. 13. If there is one thing young Mackenzie Burke Sikorra and his friend Alex Pedersen can take from the lemonade stand adventure, it’s that hypocrisy rules. Let us recap this story that has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous. (1) Twelve-year-old boys are told they can’t sell lemonade, popcorn and dog treats on city property. It is against city bylaws. (2) The boys understand and will not continue. The end. The sublime. But wait — in step the “adults,” all of whom have an opinion as to why it is OK for 12-year-olds to break the law. It’s OK because if they weren’t there “they could be floating down the river, smoking dope on the sandspit. They could be selling drugs.” This is an obvious next step, if not allowed to sell lemonade. Even poor deceased Mayor Len Traboulay gets caught up in the fracas. I’m sorry, but even he would have to abide by the laws of the community he oversaw. It’s OK to break the law because it is for soccer uniforms. Now I understand. “Who’s that going to kill?” The boys were selling homemade dog treats. Dogs have allergic reactions, just as humans do. It could

kill or sicken a beloved pet. The mayor and councillors just gave themselves a raise, so now they make too much money to bother kids. They should “Go clean up the transients in Gates Park so you’re not afraid to go down there.” Very compassionate. The ridiculous: There is national and international coverage. People, get a grip! We have people donating tickets for soccer matches, soccer-mom business owners providing tents and “apple mascots,” a barbecue, To The DollarMakers recognition, whatever that is, $200 cheques. We’ve probably just begun. Perhaps somewhere in this cacophony someone should say, “Obey the law.” Mackenzie and Alex, I would like you to remember three things about this experience: (1) If you are a cute 12-year-old, it is OK to break the law. Age 13, might be a bit dicey. (2) If moderation is good, excess is even better. (3) Don’t ever become a “transient,” because you are on your own. “Transients” don’t fit on the feelgood band wagon. Oh, there is that thing I mentioned early on — hypocrisy rules. On a side note, I read SHARE Family & Community Services Society needs donations of bunk

beds for families “in desperate need of bunk beds.” My suggestion to them? Well, you can guess. Gary Nichols Coquitlam

All garbage cans should be covered Port Coquitlam now has night patrols scouring northside neighbourhoods searching for “garbage offenders.” If you set your garbage out before 5:30 a.m. you will receive a $150 fine. Editor According to PoCo City Hall, unsecured garbage is the single biggest cause of bear intrusions into residential neighbourhoods. Drive by Aggie Park, James Park, McLean Park, etc. and take note of all the garbage bins that not only do not have a critter guard, they have “swing lids.” They are 100% unsecured. These bins are not taken in and set out before 5:30 a.m. There are baseball and soccer tournaments at these parks as well as children playing throughout the day. It would be reasonable to assume there are edibles in these bins. There is an unsecured “swing lid” garbage bin at the corner of Lougheed and Oxford. This corner consists of a Starbucks, a takeout pizza restaurant, a Chinese restaurant and a convenience store.

There could certainly be food products in this bin. The difference is that these are garbage containers that the city is responsible for and they don’t feel they need to follow the same bylaw they’re enforcing on you. I asked a City Hall employee about this very issue several months ago and I was told that the city could not afford to outfit their bins with critter guards. She said unfortunately, the city is you so you would be paying for it. Here’s my question: If we can’t afford to secure the garbage bins, how can we afford those huge pay raises that just transpired? I guess it’s just a matter of what’s important to the mayor and city council members. Maybe if they collect enough $150 fines and money from business licences to operate lemonade stands, they can give themselves an even bigger raise. In my 37 years of being a Port Coquitlam resident, this is the worst mayor and city council ever. Our community has been getting negative press both in the Vancouver papers and on the local TV news stations. No one can believe that we shut down a 12-year-old’s lemonade stand, and columnist Jon Ferry mentioned the “eye popping” salary increases in the Aug. 16 Province. And they haven’t even heard of the “PoCo Garbage Police” yet. D. Pederson Port Coquitlam

PoCo honours the city’s best gardens Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com

P

ort Coquitlam’s interest in gardening is deeply rooted in the community, and local green thumbs are being honoured for their bright blossoms and colourful creations. The 14th annual Pride of PoCo Garden Awards, hosted by the PoCo Garden Club and the City of Port Coquitlam, brought in more than 50 nominations. A panel of judges considered each garden’s street-side appeal, maintenance of plant and landscape materials, and effective use of colour and space. John and Hulda Theiler won first place for their 1478 Columbia Ave. creation, which they have been working on for more than 40 years. “It’s my hobby,” Hulda said. “I used to work in a greenhouse and I think it comes with the job. It keeps your mind off things.” City parks co-ordinator Bill Herbst said the Theilers’ garden was an easy pick for this year’s top prize. “It was very tasteful with sophisticated planting, very pleasing to the eye. The gardeners obviously know what they’re doing,” Herbst said. “You could just see the pride in that particular one.” Second place went to Laura and Michael Thomas of 4058 Liverpool St. Michael gives most of the credit to his wife, who writes her own gardening blog at florabylaura.ca. “We put a lot of hard work into it,” he said. “It’s nice to have a happy result at the end of it all.” Herbst said the second-place garden made good use of lighting and features, including a bench, trellises and an Inukshuk. “It was a real classy little island bed in the front garden and a very nice balance of plants and colour,” he said. Luigi and Rosemarie Vissochi ranked third for their garden at 2677 Fortress Dr. Herbst said this garden has been nominated many times and has won awards in the past. “There’s very excellent use of colour. It’s very well maintained,” he said. “All the neighbours have caught on. It’s probably the No. 1 block for the number of entries every year.” The top townhome garden went to Donna Pisoney of 1102 Bennet Dr. “There was lots of good colour in this one, lots of statuaries,” Herbst said. “It was a fun little garden and very well maintained.” Victor and Maria Martinho brought home an honourable mention for their water-wise garden at 1575 Prairie Ave. “Their front garden has no lawn. It’s just all gravel and pots and some statuaries. It’s very well maintained and it doesn’t take a lot of water, so we wanted to recognize that,” Herbst said. “That’s another thing that the city is looking for — reducing the water consumption.” Blakeburn Elementary also earned an honourable mention for its community involvement in Blakeburn Park. “In Blakeburn Park, the city park beside Blakeburn school, there’s a playground area and a little bark mulched area that was looking rather desolate,” Herbst said. “The school, with volunteers, took it onto themselves to plant it up. It was a nice initiative so we wanted to recognize their efforts.” All in all, Herbst said the quality of PoCo’s gardens has increased over the past several years. “The city sees the value in promoting the beautification of people’s gardens,” he said. “Over time, we have noticed that there are a lot more people investing a lot more time and work into their front gardens, and it’s really paying off.” Winners will be recognized at the Sept. 13 council meeting.

Giannisis has been raising and showing dogs for close to 30 years. She first encountered Katie six years ago when she rescued the border collie-rottweiler-Australian shepherd mix and her eight littermates. Giannisis found homes for all the puppies, but couldn’t part with Katie. “She would climb over all the other puppies to get to me and then just sit there and lick my face — I had to keep her.” Giannisis says Katie would be grateful for any donations to help her reach her Paws for a Cause fundraising goal of $1,000. All the money raised goes toward the North Cariboo Branch of the BC SPCA. Paws for a Cause is the BC SPCA’s signature fundraising event and is held in 36 communities across B.C. every September. In the Tri-Cities, an event is set for Sept. 12 at Lafarge Lake in Coquitlam. Visit spca.bc.ca/walk to donate to Katie’s campaign, register your own campaign or for more information.

Mason bees and bumblebees help with pollination

D

ue to mites and pesticides, honeybees are vanishing in many countries — and as suppliers of honey they are absolutely irreplaceable. But pollination in home gardens isn’t a lost cause because it can be done very effectively by other members of the bee family. The crucial thing gardeners can do is make gardens welcoming for these lesser-known but hard-working bees. Bumblebees, for instance, are resistant to the dreaded varroa mite that has decimated many honeybee hives. Other mites also attack bumblebees, but most weaken rather than kill outright. These bees are willing to work in temperatures below 10 C (50 F) — unlike honeybees, which don’t stir until temperatures are above 16 C (60 F). Bumblebees are good-tempered Branching Out and their stings are extremely rare, though very painful when they do Anne Marrison occur. They work commercially in greenhouses pollinating tomatoes and sometimes peppers and cucumbers. Bumblebees are said to adapt well to greenhouses since they have senior moments and forget where they used to live. All they need for a nest is a hole in the ground. This could be an old mouse hole or a hole under a board or under a flat stone — somewhere rain can’t penetrate. Nothing bothers to rob a bumblebee hive; the total amount of honey in a nest is about two teaspoons. A colony starts small when the queen comes out of hibernation, but larger hives can reach 200 bumblebees. Invaluable for pollinating fruit, vegetable and ornamental crops in spring, mason bees have never been known to sting. They usually begin pollinating during the first warm spell in February but die off by mid-June, leaving eggs behind. In nature, each egg is sealed off in a plant stem or hole in a tree. By spring, the eggs have gone through a larval stage and

MOTORING

The Camry Hybrid comes to a stop at traffic lights to save fuel.

Gas engine kicks in as you pick up speed  CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16.

Camry Hybrid is ready to move. Initial movement is typically by noiseless electrical propulsion, which is a little strange at first. And it can also be a surprise to those who are standing in close proximity. As you pick up speed, the gasoline engine kicks in (with a slight tug) and provides more power. When you come to a stop at a traffic light the engine also stops — more silence. This auto-stop feature saves fuel, normally wasted during idling. What’s happening under the hood is shown on a display in the instrument panel. You can see when the electric motor or the gas engine is supplying power. When you press on the brake pedal, a regenerative system converts the stopping power into electrical power and recharges the battery. The transitions from electric motor power to gasoline engine are almost always very smooth. Occasionally, it is caught in its decision-making sequence and you can feel the gas engine surge in to action. In addition to offering outstanding fuel efficiency, the Toyota Camry Hybrid has also earned a solid reputation for quality and long-term durability and is the benchmark by which all competitors are judged.

2010 JR. A. MINTO CUP | AUGUST 21 - 29

Adanacs’ imports added punch to attack to score. He is a very creative player.” Giourmetakis, an Edmonton native, was another lefthander who filled a void created with the graduation losses of Trevor Moore and Jordan Weir. Both Giourmetakis and Thomson put up a goal-a-game pace in limited regular season action, and are expected to amp it up in the national championships. Despite coming from the Burnaby Lakers organization, Loewen will get his first national championship action this week. He was an intermediate call-up during the Lakers’ last run, but is anticipating an intense run for the final. Getting traded was the toughest hurdle to cross, he noted. “It was a little weird at first, but me and Nick (Bilic) understood we did what we had to do to win a championship. We’re part of a team now,” Loewen said. Matthews will be a main focus of the defence, fans and rival coaches when the Adanacs have the ball. The soft spoken former Whitby Warrior and University of Denver athlete is ready to do his best to help Coquitlam advance to the final. “I definitely came here to win a Minto, work with a great group of guys, great coaches,” Matthews, who received the BCJALL’s Outstanding Achievement award, said. “It was definitely tough leaving my friends, I talk to them a lot at home but I’ll be back. It was tough going to school and here, but it’s worth it.”

and Simon Giourmetakis. The three imports — two Ontarians and an Albertan — were hard catches but entirely worth the price. Coquitlam also added B.C. products John Canil early in the year and Nick Bilic, Robbie Campbell, Riley Loewen and goaltender Brodie Campbell at the trading deadline. The biggest impact came in the 6’5, 210-pound package of Matthews, an Oshawa native who brought offensive punch to the left side. “He’s big, he’s strong, he’s a lefthander,” Ken Wood said. “He’s athletic, he has a quick release and you right away notice that he wasn’t just focused on one task, he was seeing all of the floor.” The 20-year-old Matthews posted a powerful 35 goals and 31 assists in just 10 league games, and added seven markers and 27 helpers in seven playoff contests for a round 100 points in 17 games. “His vision on the floor is amazing,” Malawsky said. “He knows exactly what’s going on, not just in front of him but behind him as well. He’s just got that floor sense, that lacrosse savvy where [he] always knows what’s going on.” Beers says that while they had heard about Matthews’ skills, to see him at work proved to be an eye opener, even for his new teammates. “He is a phenomenal, phenomenal lacrosse player,” said Beers. “He knows where to put the ball on goalies, he knows the spots he needs to put the ball

When the Coquitlam junior Adanacs were awarded the 2010 Minto Cup, the pressure that was on the floor turned to the man in the fedora hat. Fresh off a 12-6 drubbing at the hands of Brampton in the 2009 Minto semifinal, general manager Ken Wood began building what he envisioned would be a championship-calibre team. The difficult decision to fire head coach Dan Perreault wasn’t done lightly, and it was a decision that resulted in rounds of criticism. By inserting lacrosse legend and former Minto Cup winning coach Curt Malawsky behind the bench, Wood alleviated some of the questions and head scratching. But he still faced some serious challenges. Eager to speed up the building plan that had elevated the junior A franchise into a regular contender, the Coquitlam general manager knew that to truly compete for the national championship he had to do what previous finalists had done — and that was go outside the local boundaries to attract some big guns to complement the homegrown talented of Robert Church, Ben McIntosh and Matt Beers. With the assistance and insistence of Malawsky, Wood dialed both local and long distance and brought in a handful of pieces to what was already a complex Minto Cup puzzle. Adanacs take aim at quick start at Minto The opposing teams have arrived, the arena has been polished — now all that’s left to do is to play the games. The Minto Cup national junior A lacrosse championship starts tomorrow, 5 p.m., with the defending champ Orangeville Northmen taking on the No. 2 team from B.C., the New Westminster Salmonbellies. In the nightcap (8 p.m.), the host Coquitlam Adanacs welcome the Okotoks Raiders. All games are at the Poirier Sports Centre. The four teams are vying for two berths in the best-of-three final, which starts Aug. 27. Certainly, all the preparation and pre-tournament adjustments have sunk in. The players now get to deliver. “With back-to-back championships Orangeville definitely have to be the favourite,” Adanacs general manager Ken Wood said. “They are going to be the biggest challenge. Alberta, they have an impressive record and we hear that they are a very quick team. “And New West, we know all we have to about them.” Coquitlam addressed a lot of specific areas over the past year, adding depth to the defence, adding forwards and a big goaltender to share the load. Head coach Curt Malawsky has implemented a defencefirst, transition-quick gameplan, while emphasizing fitness. Wood also had a strong nucleus of returning players to build around — players who a year ago tasted the heartbreak of losing at the Minto Cup. “We got darn near everything we wanted to get in assembling a strong [team],” Wood said. “We believe we have the players in place to give us a shot.” “I’m superstitious so confidence is not something I exude at times like this,” Wood said. “I am confident that we’ve got everything in place to compete with the best.” Check page 24 for a complete Minto Cup schedule.

GAME, SET, MATCH: Port Coquitlam’s Vivian Tsui has collected two Odlum Brown tour stops and turned heads on the provincial tennis scene. The teen is currently ranked No. 1 among B.C. under-16 girls.

PoCo teen rises up B.C. racket charts Dan Olson sports@thenownews.com The heat of the summer has turned into a hot time on the court for Port Coquitlam’s Vivian Tsui. The Archbishop Carney teen has rocketed up the B.C. tennis charts and demonstrated that she’s up to the challenge of the competitive provincial racket scene. Next up, the national level. It’s been a forehand smash for the talented player, with an Odlum Brown series opening victory at the Coquitlam Open in May, topping Kelly McNabney 6-1, 6-2 for the title. She followed that by capturing the sixth annual Delta Open women’s singles title, knocking off PoCo rival Alejandra Enderica 6-2, 6-1 in June. The 16 year old’s recent exploits include pushing

the No. 1-seed at the Vancouver Challenger Open earlier this month, taking on 20-year-old Julia Glushko of Israel, who was recently rated No. 330 in world rankings. “I just thought I’d try and play my best,” said Tsui. “This is my first full year on the tour and I expected to get use to the surroundings and get use to big tournaments. It’s gone well.” The lone wrinkle to a successful summer came when she twisted her back prior to the Stanley Park Open in July. Although she laced on her shoes and gave it a try, she eventually withdrew from the competition to rest her back. Tsui began taking tennis seriously at the age of 10, after much encouragement from her father. “My dad really likes tennis and he told me I have a talent for picking things up quickly. I just thought I’d focus on this and see how it sticks.” There’s no question on the bond between athlete

and sport. Establishing herself on the ranking board, Tsui took the first step as an unranked rival when she upset then-No. 1-ranked Katrina Boiko in Coquitlam. “That was the first time I beat her in an open tournament,” she noted. “My style of game was to be patient and stay with her, I just wanted to keep close and be ready, and it worked.” Training at Coquitlam’s People’s Courts, the teen has spent the past year advancing up the charts, to where she sits No. 1 in under-16, and second in the open district women’s division. The coaches at People’s Court have overseen her development for the past five years and believe she’s got plenty of untapped potential still. “She’s really worked hard the last year on her key areas, and she’s shown a lot more maturity and confidence on the court,” Hassan Askari, one of the  CONT. Temporary Lane Reductions Lougheed Highway at United Boulevard

Motorists are advised that temporary traffic pattern changes will be implemented on Lougheed Highway, near United Boulevard. Lougheed Highway traffic lanes will be temporarily reduced to two lanes in each direction, for a distance of approximately 200 metres from Friday 9 p.m. to Monday 5 a.m. on the following dates: August 20 to August 23 August 27 to August 30 September 10 to September 13 These temporary lane reductions are required to install new, wider fish passable culverts underneath the highway. Lane reductions will be in one direction at a time (either westbound or eastbound) and will be communicated through roadside electronic message boards. A minimum of two lanes in each direction will be maintained at all times; however, to avoid travel delays, motorists may wish to use alternate routes during this time. No traffic pattern changes will be in affect during weekday peak times. For more information, or to view a detailed map of these changes, please visit the PMH1 Project web site at www.pmh1project.com, call 1 866 999-7641(PMH1) or e-mail info@pmh1project.com

Panthers sharpen claws for new season

The ice is in and the players are coming and going. It’s life as usual for the Port Moody junior B Black Panthers. The Pacific International Jr. B Hockey League’s 2009-10 cellar-dwellers aren’t the same team as last year — even with the usual August uncertainty of on-ice product placement. That’s because general manager/owner Ron Luniw has a veteran with a winning track record calling the shots behind the bench in Ron Johnson. This edition of the Two Ronnies will not be like the 1970s British TV comedy of the same name. “Me and Ron go back a long time, 15 years,” said Luniw. “We’ve talked on several occasions and this time he contacted me...

It’s just a win-win situation and it takes a lot of heat off me.” Johnson, who worked with Rick Harkins in Aldergrove last season and steered the second-year franchise to a league title, has run junior B squads in Richmond, New Westminster and North Delta He replaces Marko Segovic, who took over the coaching reins in 2008 and held on for two rollercoaster seasons. The Panthers could be veteran-laden, with as many as 14 players returning. Considering last year’s dismal 11-36-1 record, a lot of jobs are open for competition. The blueline, led by returnees Chris Stew, Cam Paterson and Curtis Weins, could benefit from an injection of youthful skill, if major midget grads Daniel Lee and

Brodie Serka don’t stick in junior A. On the offence, Luniw expects big things from 21-goal scorer Justin Dorey, Julian Klaric, and Dylan Friels. Coquitlam teen Carson Spooner could be an impact player, too. However, it is in the crease where the focus is on a newcomer — 19-year-old junior B vet Delaney Minichiello. “Ron and I agree that we needed an older goalie, we’re looking for some maturity to set the tone. He (Minichiello) has experience, and we’ve got some younger guys who are pushing hard for jobs,” said Luniw. Port Moody’s exhibition schedule starts tonight, 7 p.m. at Coquitlam Planet Ice against Ridge Meadows. It continues Saturday, 7 p.m. at the Port Moody arena against Delta.

TOPSY TURVY: Tri-City Bandits’ Charlie Girdler, right, bowls over Owen Sound’s Robert DeBrone during Day 2 of the Presidents Cup senior B national championship in Burnaby. The Bandits were doubled 10-5 by the host Burnaby Burrards Wednesday, leaving Tri-City in a four-way tie for second place at 2-2. Jordan Flaman and Athan Iannucci each tallied twice in the loss. They take on the Kahnawake Mohawks 4:30 today (Friday). The Presidents Cup final goes Saturday, 7 p.m. at the Bill Copeland Arena.

Bantam Cardinals came close

The PoCo bantam A Cardinals saw their stellar summer run come to a close in the B.C. baseball championship last month. PoCo had an early 2-0 lead evaporate in an 8-5 championship semifinal battle with eventual provincial champion Aldergrove. The game turned on a couple of errors, but featured a spirited rally that fell just short of the mark. Tyler Lineker and Joel Jensen supplied the RBIs in the first inning, but Aldergrove replied with two in the second and three more in the third. Relief pitcher Devan McCourt was named PoCo’s player of the game. The Cardinals’ run saw them finish 3-1 in the round robin, including a 10-0 drubbing of Maple Ridge and an 8-3 win over Oceanside. In that win, Robin Ricketts held the Island team to just three runs on six hits. Jacob Helmhold went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in. PoCo also edged Ladner 4-3 after opening with a 10-7 loss to Duncan. Other player of the game honours went to Christopher Borghardt, Evan Gain, Helmhold and Ricketts.

program’s high performance coaches who’ve worked with Tsui. “She has come a long, long way on her mental game, and we’re seeing the results on the court.” Along with director of the high performance program Dimitri Penchev, Askari has witnessed the young player build on a solid tennis resume through persistence and dedication. More of the same is expected. “She is considered an aggressive baseline hitter, and that’s uncommon in the girls’ game,” Askari said. “She has

a willingness to go to the net, she has good hands and she hits the ball hard. Vivian is definitely one girl in B.C. who can reach the pros.” ACE NOTES: The People’s Courts Tennis Academy saw two tennis players return from the Under-12 National championships in Mont-Tremblant, QC., with medals. Benjamin Sigouin won the boys title, defeating Quebec’s Alexander Donski 6-3, 6-3. Rosie Johanson, meanwhile, advanced to the girls final before bowing out 6-3, 6-2 to Charlotte Robillard-Millette. Coquitlam’s Andrea Gu finished 10th overall.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Aries March 21 - April 19: A month of work and health issues begins Sunday. Yet your main experience will be pleasure this week. Sunday/ Monday feature social delights, happiness (attraction) in love, optimism, entertainment and wish fulfilment! Thursday night through Saturday boost your energy and charisma. (Saturday might bring a further development to Sunday/Monday’s attraction.) This week subtly furthers your (fortunate) destiny in work, career, and ultimately, finances. Even your “down time,” Tuesday to Thursday eve, flows smoothly: rest, think. Remember, start nothing major before Sept. 12.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Start nothing new before Sept. 12. Sunday begins four weeks of travel, communications, errands, curiosity, casual acquaintances, siblings, paperwork, news, and “daily business.” A busy, not important time. It’s busy partly because these activities (travel, communications, etc.) meet delays, misses, mistakes, forgetfulness. Keep a running “to do” list, take a list when shopping, etc. Your home, kids, a security or realty project remain front-and-centre. Finances, intimacy, lifestyle decisions favoured Sunday/Monday. Gentle love, wisdom mid-week. Ambition, Friday/Saturday.

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Rest, lie low, contemplate, be charitable and spiritual now to late September. Don’t start new projects before Sept. 12. Anticipate delays, mistakes in administrative duties and government, institutional links. A tax or other neglected matter might return to demand completion. But in general, life will flow smoothly, your romantic progress (if you’re in one) pleases, life is sweet and nostalgic! (If you’re single, unattached, late January to early summer 2011 will bring a lucky partnership opening.) Romance, creative urges Sunday/Monday; exciting meetings Friday/Saturday. Work, mid-week.

Taurus April 20-May 20: Reject new starts, projects and relationships before Sept. 12. Loads of work streams your way, but there’s satisfaction, even affection in this. Also, a month of romance, pleasure, charming kids, speculation and beauty starts now! You’ll have lots of relief from all those duties. (But keep your eye on the ball, for late September will bring another basket of chores.) Your status/career meet luck Sunday (best) and Monday. Social joys, optimism, happiness and entertainment arrive Tuesday to Thursday. Your “destined love” is “around.” An old flame? Lie low, rest late week.

Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Projects, relationships and ventures begun before Sept. 12 will almost certainly meet overwhelming mistakes, indecision and delays. So stick with the ongoing, or past situations, especially in earnings and spending – an area that will generally be fortunate for the four weeks ahead. (An “unseen destiny” aids you in money areas midweek.) Double-check amounts on cheques, change at the store, watch your wallet, etc. Relationships demand (and reward) your attention Sunday (best) and Monday. Secrets, intimacy, lust, investments, debt, mid-week. Gentle love, wisdom Friday/ Saturday.

Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Start no important new projects, ventures, relationships before Sept. 12. That might be difficult, as your mind naturally travels to the future for the next four weeks – you’re optimistic! Well, enjoy the state. Your popularity grows, social joys enter, entertainment, flirtations abound. A former lover or sweet friend might return. It’s fun and full of bounce, so don’t say no. But on a deeper level, the love here will raise issues of “deep duty,” perhaps of burden, or ”sweet sorrow.” You decide what’s worth what. Duties, sweet or not, appear Sunday/Monday, Friday/Saturday.

Gemini May 21-June 20: Delay all new starts – especially in domestic, realty, Mother Nature and security spheres – until Sept. 12. You’ll be tempted to “jump early” in those domestic, realty (etc.) areas, as they grow large for the next four weeks. Let events evolve: destiny is on your side, especially financially. Romance (or the lack thereof) remains a strong secondary note. Love’s opportunities exist right into mid-September. However, better now if it’s an old flame – perhaps from a former neighbourhood. Love and/or friendship are favoured Sunday/Monday and Thursday night to Saturday. Mid-week, be ambitious.

BUSINESSES FOR SALE

Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Your energy and charisma soar this week through the next few, Virgo. But don’t start big new (or even small important) projects, nor relationships, before Sept. 12. So that leaves you in a bind: you’re in the best start time of the year energywise, and one of the worst circumstantially. Solution: seize something incomplete or abandoned from the past, and revive it. Best (past) place to look: earnings, money, possessions, rote learning, memory, a sensual contact, financial investment/debt, sexual bond, lifestyle change. Work’s lucky Sunday, relationships and travel lucky Tuesday/Wednesday.

Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: A former job, career contact, parenting role, or status position might return now to Sept. 12. (“Destiny” aids here mid-week.) But don’t start brand new projects or relationships, especially in these areas. Instead, seize that past opportunity, or stick with ongoing ventures, while protecting them from delays, mistakes and misunderstood communications. Your social life remains happy, upbeat. A light, flirtatious romance could arrive (perhaps Thursday night through Saturday) – or better, an ongoing one thrives. (A brand new relationship will tend to stay light, not “grow.”)

6 MINUTES to 100 Mile House Downsizing? Need level entry? 3BR, 2bath. Well constructed in 2007, $339,900. Darrel @ RE/MAX 1-250-609-0432

August 22 - 28 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Start nothing new before Sept. 12. A former educational, publishing, cultural, love, international, legal or intellectual interest, project or situation might return. (Or you daydream about it/him/her.) Returning to the past can reward. If an old flame returns, a strong “career” or ambition streak is involved – e.g., he/she perhaps was once your boss, or a major client. Chase money Sunday (best) and Monday. Travel, communications mid-week – a turn of destiny could bring, aid, one of those educational, international, etc. things! Let things end Thursday night through Saturday. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: A former investment, debt, secret, sexual, research, lifestyle, criminal/ police, diagnostic or health situation could reappear before Sept. 12. It’s generally favourable, could be a doorway to profit, satisfaction. But think before you leap. During the same interval, start nothing new, especially in these areas. You’re going be dealing with heavy themes, serious matters! Gentle, true love, intellectual growth, mental creativity, pleasurable travel and/or legal process – all continue. Your energy, charisma surge Sunday/Monday. (Someone has romance on the mind!) Chase money mid-week. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Avoid new starts before Sept. 12 – in projects and, especially, in relationships. You’ll have plenty to keep you busy with ongoing links – including one from the past. These might “reappear” after some absence: negotiations, litigation, a relocation, partnership or business opportunity, or even an enemy. Take everything in stride, be flexible, diplomatic. You might face a choice: To join or compete. Joining’s better, as your competition holds the aces right now. Lie low, rest, contemplate Sunday/Monday. Your charisma surges mid-week, triggering success! Money caution after Thursday. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
