The Tri-Cities group is one of two SAR teams in Canada to receive an automatic external defibrillator (AED) to help rescuers treat cardiac problems while deep in the backcountry. Port Moody plans referendum on borrowing for new fire hall Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com Port Moody voters will go to the polls next February for a referendum on borrowing money to replace a fire hall. Reconstruction of Fire Hall No. 1 is the only major city-funded capital project in council’s 2009 strategic plan. The site and costs are not yet determined to replace the facility, which was built at 200 Ioco Road in 1973. The city hired Vancouver-based firm Johnston Davidson Architects to develop preliminary schematic design work for the replacement project. Based on recent plans, the new fire hall will encompass about 2,137 square metres (23,000 square feet).
Council agreed Tuesday to invest another $50,000 on further preliminary work, which is needed to determine a total cost estimate. The city will hire geotechnical, structural and environmental consultants to complete this stage of the project. The city will also spend $40,000 to hold a referendum on a borrowing bylaw for the initiative. After project costs are confirmed, staff will prepare the bylaw for three readings by council. After that, the bylaw will be referred to the inspector of municipalities for approval, and then the referendum must take place within 80 days. The official voting date can’t be confirmed until the inspector grants approval, but the borrowing bylaw referendum is expected to take place on a Saturday in February 2011.

Coquitlam homeowners might soon need to remove giant hogweed from their properties or pay the price. City staff are developing a draft noxious weed bylaw that would require residents to remove the invasive perennial plant if it crops up in their yard. If they don’t comply, city staff could do the job themselves and bill the homeowner for the costs. Giant hogweed — also known as the giant cow parsnip — grows near streams, creeks, ditches and roads, as well as in vacant lots. Part of the parsley family, it can grow up to six metres (20 feet) tall with leaves as wide as 1.5 metres (five feet) across. After a few years of growth, the weed will bloom in the summer and form large clusters of small white flowers, up to one metre (three feet) in diameter. The invasive species spreads easily, since each plant can produce 50,000 seeds per year. Giant hogweed sap can cause severe burns or permanent scarring, which has made it a priority for both the Greater Vancouver Invasive Plant Council and WorkSafe BC. According to a WorkSafe BC publication, giant hogweed is not native to the province and was originally imported from Asia as a garden curiosity. In Coquitlam, staff have identified giant hogweed in 22 park sites, which they visit each year to eradicate new plants. The infestation remains at a level that could be managed or eradicated completely, notes a staff report. However, giant hogweed has recently been found on 11 private properties in Coquitlam. “In most cases, the property owners have

PoCo is not West Vancouver Re: “PoCo council approves pay hikes,” Wednesday, July 28. The long form or short form census for Statistics Canada obviously means nothing to the City of Port Coquitlam council because they haven’t studied it, understood it or really care about it. Statistics Canada information for Port Coquitlam has always indicated we have differing socioeconomics than those we choose to compare ourselves with. To The Comparisons are good for decisionmaking, but to compare Port Coquitlam to West Vancouver and municipalities that admit they plan to attract lawyers and doctors is not a fair assessment. I believe this is why previous councils continued on the path of smaller increases, of which four members sitting today were a part of those decisions.
I wonder what has changed? I am troubled this council has chosen to attack previous councils. I believe the report from the citizens’ committee has been cherry-picked and is not being represented for its true content. I also note Mayor Greg Moore has tried to justify these increases by indicating respect for city staff and city council in the form of remuneration is the norm. Sorry, respect is earned; it Editor has nothing to do with the size of your wallet. This council has lost touch and needs to reconnect with the everyday hardworking people who keep our youth involved and work with our seniors — these are the people with thin wallets; they have my respect. Cutting salt could help manufacturers
S
hould the federal government force food manufacturers to limit the amount of salt in their products? The answer, according to a federally appointed task force that released its report Thursday, is “not yet.” The Sodium Working Group — couldn’t they come up with a more interesting name? — decided that food manufacturers should voluntarily cut sodium levels in their products or face regulations. That sounds like a pretty soft approach, since salty products are popular and manufacturers want to sell more of them. On the other hand, though, many Canadians eat too much sodium, which has been linked to health problems ranging from high blood pressure to heart attack and stroke. The recommended daily intake for an adult is 1,500 milligrams, but average consumption is reportedly 3,400 milligrams (that equals about one and a half teaspoons of salt). If Canada is able to hit the 1,500-milligramper-person target, it would save the country about $1.5 billion annually in direct healthcare costs — or $3 billion if indirect costs are included — according to Mary L’Abbe, a professor of nutritional sciences at the University of Toronto and the vice-chair of the working group. Then again, sodium is already included on the mandatory nutrition labels that appear on almost every food item, so concerned shoppers who have, for example, high blood pressure and don’t want to worsen their condition can compare brands and choose a low-sodium alternative. Some products, such as margarine and peanut butter, are already available with no added sodium. Smart manufacturers will offer more lowsodium products, and if the federal government launches a sodium education campaign, those manufacturers will be rewarded.

Buying natural products would reduce trash
Your View
The growing concerns about the huge amounts of garbage to be disposed of could be history if everyone would stop purchasing goods created of man-made materials. Manufacturers are flooding the market with a multitude of items produced of plastics, many of which end up in the trash after a very short time, claiming their space as landfill. It definitely would be better for the planet if only natural materials were used by manufacturers, especially in the production of clothing — shoes in particular. Natural materials do break down in landfills and actually enrich the quality of the To The Editor soil. Even shoes, after they have outgrown their usefulness, can be dug under. But shoes have to be made completely out of leather. Such good, old and proven methods and practices would work well for us in these modern days. We are running out of dumping grounds, and some think of building incinerators to burn all that plastic junk. Burning will bring its own problems, unless it has been proven scientifically, beyond a shadow of doubt, that incineration is harmless to humans and the environment, that it will not create any type of pollution and will not present health hazards to the public. There would be no need for these questionable incinerators if we, the consumers, would do some boycotting and demand manufacturers produce goods only made of natural materials. These products would be healthier and safer for everyone. Perhaps we could aim to be the first province in Canada to be the greenest. Brie Oishi Port Coquitlam

For him, however, the main issue is the potential safety risk associated with hogweed. “The concern, at least for me, is the fact that they can cause burning and scarring, especially with a lot of young kids around,” Lynch said. “So I think most people want to get rid of it anyway … Most people with the right types of instruction and protective equipment, like gloves, should be able to take care of the hogweed themselves.” For those who aren’t able to remove it, the city would consider implementing a system similar to the Snow Angel program, in which
volunteers shovel driveways and sidewalks for neighbours who need a hand. “We were wondering if there might be some people out there involved in horticulture who might be willing to be volunteers and go out in the community and help people that couldn’t remove hogweed themselves,” Lynch said. The idea of the proposed bylaw is to achieve compliance rather than to fine people, he added. “If it becomes a health or safety risk, then we would simply need to go and do it ourselves and then bill the owners. We do have requirements in the city to maintain the properties, and if it’s not maintained, we do issue warnings,” he said. “In Coquitlam, it’s a small enough problem right now that we actually could totally eradicate hogweed. We can get rid of it completely if we deal with it now. But if we wait and it compounds, it could get out of control.”

I expect we’ll have some discussion about whether we need to give warnings this year, and if so, to what extent,” Scoones said. “I do tend to think that there’s been a lot of publicity about this, so if the direction is to just enforce, then I’m certainly prepared to do that.” The same bylaw applies across the entire city, but the priority enforcement area is north of Lougheed Highway, he added. Bylaw officers also focus on neighbourhoods near Lions and Gates parks, since bears travel along the Coquitlam River. Port Coquitlam’s finance committee was expected to make its decision Thursday afternoon after NOW deadline.

Final days for SHARE fundraising drive
Tri-Cities residents can take part in a fun summer series of drive-in movie nights at Coquitlam Centre for donating to SHARE’s Christmas in July food bank campaign. Tonight (Friday, July 30), shoppers who go to the mall’s guest services area and donate $10 to SHARE will receive a “preferred pass” to one of three drive-in movies: Iron Man on Aug. 11, The Notebook on Aug. 18 or How to Train Your Dragon on Aug. 25. All screenings take place on Wednesday nights. Movie parking at the northeast entrance (by H&M and Zellers) begins at 8 p.m. and is based on a first-come, firstserved basis with a $10 percar donation. Screenings will take place weather permitting. For information, visit www. coquitlamcentre.ca.

hey begin early, at times arriving before dawn. All wait patiently, and obtain their number to ensure their place in line. No matter how many assurances are given, they worry there will not be enough food. It’s a regular Wednesday at SHARE’s food bank in Port Moody, where people come to receive a hamper that will help restock their shelves for the next two weeks. Someone has brought a tent cover this week to afford patrons some shade while they wait. There isn’t much in the hampers, but it’s appreciated nonetheless. “I can tell you right now, it’s for the better. It’s a food can here, a loaf of bread there,” says one man, who did not want to be named. He says he and his girlfriend do their best to buy groceries in bulk when they come on sale, but even bargains can only go so far. He points down to his new pair of runners — purchased on sale even though they are a size too big — which didn’t cost much but could very well tip the scale of this month’s budget. “You need shoes, right?” he asks. “Then you’re figuring you’re running short this month, so that’s why I’m here.” Abraham, sitting across from him, says summer
makes it a bit easier to get by. “In winter when the bills are big, I come every two weeks,” he explains. “It depends on my money situation. I try to make it on my own money. “But I have to pay my heating bill, so the food becomes secondary.” Abraham is in line for a medium hamper, one of three sizes available, depending on the number of family members. Families of four are assigned large hampers, which contain 14 items. They include items like peanut butter, boxed potato mix, pasta, canned tomato sauce, corn, tuna and beans, juice, Kraft Dinner and some cookies. SHARE’s annual Christmas in July campaign is winding down, and the fundraiser has garnered about one-third of what was collected last year. The food bank still needs to feed more than 8,100 people — a 26-per-cent increase from 2008 — and 3,600 of those are children. Development director Heather Scott says SHARE is doing its best to avoid having to reduce the number of items going to families. “We have two weeks of food left,” she says, pointing to a long wall of hamper bags that will disappear in a few short hours. There is more than just canned goods here. In addition to a dolly loaded up with boxes of fresh blueberries, diapers and infant formula are stacked up on shelves, and there is a host of medical supplies

and pet food available. Cash donations go a long way at the food bank, Scott explains, because of their buying power. “You’re giving more than just food.” For John (not his real name), the food bank is definitely more than just a place to stock the cupboard. He is about to celebrate 15 years of sobriety in November, and has been volunteering at the food bank since January after moving to Coquitlam last fall. The one day each week he spends cleaning bread containers has become an outing to visit with newfound friends. “But there’s some pretty good people here. I feel good about volunteering here. It makes me happy. It’s a family,” John says. “My dad said I’d never live to be 20. When I made it to 20, he said I’d never live to see 30,” he recalls, adding that he will turn 54 next year. “My dad died at 54, and every day after I turn 54 will be a bonus.” • SHARE’s Christmas in July campaign wraps up tomorrow (Saturday), but donations of food and funds are accepted any time at the food bank at 2615 Clarke St. in Port Moody, or at any Tri-Cities grocery store with a food bank box. Grocery stores also sell $2 Buy BC coupons at check stands, which allow the food bank to purchase locally grown produce. To make a financial donation, call 604-540-9161 or visit www.sharesociety.ca.

Deadhead regularly
I
n the early years of gardening, many of us treat deadheading as a casual stroll where we can hold a cup of coffee (or glass of wine) in one hand and pick off spent flowers with the other. But later, deadheading can become so much more. For container gardeners in summer, deadheading is also a chance to check for pests that can quickly become epidemic in hot, dry conditions. All annuals bloom longer if deadheaded regularly, and if annuals grown for foliage happen to flower, it’s usually best to deadhead them early. Many foliage plants (coleus is one) have insignificant flowers and if Branching Out they’re allowed to make seed the foliage often deteriorates. Anne Marrison Some perennials will re-bloom if cut back immediately after the first flush of bloom. This includes many hardy geraniums, lupins, snapdragons, Verbena bonariensis, yarrow and alchemilla (ladies mantle). Once summer is well underway, gardeners may consider neglecting some of the deadheading to provide seed heads for dried arrangements in winter. The hardy annual love-in-a-mist (Nigella), with its seed heads of red-striped green globes, is beautiful in vases. Its seed is easy to save and scatter in fall for next year’s display. But seed heads that look so good in garden beds or winter arrangements can be a real trap for gardeners who already have quite enough dandelions or buttercups to weed out and don’t need thousands of volunteer hellebores/teasels/camas/ornamental grasses as well. The key is to watch the seed heads and cut the unwanted ones out before they get close to shedding seed. Gardeners who want short-lived perennials to persist in their garden should allow a little self-seeding. Columbines and foxgloves fall into this group, but foxgloves need to be cut back before they turn into an ugly long pole crowned by a tuft of flowers. Cutting almost the whole stalk but leaving a few inches of seed capsules at the flower spike’s base ensures a manageable amount of seed to scatter where you want more foxgloves. Some rampant self-seeders need finesse and extra time if seeding is to be stopped while allowing the flower display to continue. For instance, astrantia blooms in clusters where CONTINUED ON PAGE 16, see DEADHEADING.

Get back in the game. Say goodbye to pain. After a few hours of tennis I would develop a limp and the knee pain was interfering with my game & sleep. I had an MRI and X-Rays and was diagnosed with serious arthritis in both knees. The other Doctors recommended physio therapy and expensive remedies that were injected into both knees. There was only minor improvement noticed. After seeing an ad in our local paper I decided to give Laser Light Therapy a chance. I’ve had about six half hour treatments for each knee and I can’t believe the results. Now after tennis I feel almost no knee pain or stiffness and can sleep without pain. Laser Light Therapy

Get home safely this long weekend
This BC Day long weekend, British Columbians will be enjoying a weekend getaway. If you’ll be hitting the road this weekend, take all the steps to have a safe and enjoyable trip.
For more tips go to www. drivesmartsavegreen.com.
No. 3 - Secure it: Make sure you properly secure all items inside and on your vehicle. During rest breaks, take a few moments to check that your cargo is still properly secured.
No. 1 - Be realistic: Allow extra time for rest breaks and possible delays. Check www.drivebc.ca for road and weather conditions before setting out.
No. 4 - Drive smart: You might think that by speeding, you’re cutting down on your travel time but what you’re really doing is decreasing your reaction time. Remember that wildlife is also more common along highways.
No. 2 - Check: Remember to check your engine oil, washer fluid, lights and inspect your tires, including the spare, to make sure they are in good condition.
If you are involved in a crash, ICBC’s Dial-A-Claim service is open 24 hours a day, including holidays. In the Lower Mainland, call 604-520-8222, and for the rest of B.C., call 1-800910-4222, or you can file
your claim online at icbc. com.
And remember it is now illegal to use hand held devices while driving. Find out more at www.drivecellsafe.ca. - CNW

individual florets open over a very long time. This means older florets should be snipped out frequently because they will produce and drop seed while the younger florets are still in early bloom. There are others such as Hellebore foetidus and H. orientalis, for instance, which ripen suddenly and shed seed shockingly fast. Others, like lilies or Iris sibirica, where the seed head opening faces firmly upward, can be left longer before deadheading. By early fall, wildlife-loving gardeners stop
deadheading perennials, which produce seed that birds like. This includes rudbeckia, echinacea and some of the verbascums (mulliens). Deadheading is very important for spring bulbs because the energy they use to produce seed is stolen from next spring’s flower display. But alliums seem to handle cutting well. In fact, Allium christophii seed heads can decorate the garden till autumn rain and wind topples them.

A redesign has given the 2010 Mitsubishi Outlander a bold new look.

make the Outlander moves very quickly and it sounds great doing it. On a steep hill or with a heavy load on board, on the other hand, more low-speed engine grunt would be desirable. Our Outlander also had the six-speed automatic transmission with a manual mode feature that allowed both console lever shifts and shifter paddles mounted on the steering column, not the wheel. At 110 km/h on the highway, the tachometer read just 2,000 r.p.m. So, obviously it has a

long-geared drivetrain for fuel economy, but unlike the four-cylinder, the V-6 engine prefers premium fuel. Outlander provides a tall driving position, good seat support, big side mirrors, and the steering wheel with a tilt, but not telescopic, feature. A hand-operated pull-up type park brake is another plus. The boldly redesigned Mitsubishi Outlander stands out from the crowd. Bigger than most of the SUV competition in its price range, it offers plenty of cargo capacity, good value and is backed by an extra-long coverage warranty.

Score Card
Golden haul at peewee provincials A third-period blitz put the Coquitlam A1 Adanacs over the top at the B.C. peewee lacrosse championships Sunday in Ladner. Trailing by three with nine minutes left in the final, the Adanacs stepped it up and counted five unanswered goals, beating rival Ridge Meadows 10-8 for the gold. “They just kept on working, they plowed ahead and got the job done,” said coach Jim McIntosh of his squad. “Their frame of mind was confident, they heard an inspirational speech from (player) Chris Bosa and they were ready to go.” It was a perfect close to the club’s season, one that wrapped with an impressive 33-3 record — with two of those losses on the weekend. The squad of 11 and 12 year olds advanced to the final by besting Langley 11-10, building a solid lead and holding on in the final minutes. Coquitlam staked out a 4-1 lead after 20 minutes and 9-6 after 40. Although Langley pressed hard for the equalizer and pulled the goalie, the Adanacs’ defence didn’t break. Earning the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award was all-purpose player Reid Bowering. “He does it all, he scores goals, gets assists and plays great defence,” McIntosh noted. “He doesn’t say much but he just does it.” The Adanacs launched the tourney with an 11-8 win over Coquitlam A2, followed by a 10-4 loss to Langley. They rebounded to blast Juan de Fuca 14-8, and closed out the round robin with an 8-7 loss to Ridge. None of the setbacks proved to be detrimental to the overall strategy. “They definitely could (do it),” the coach said. “The are a good group of kids and worked really hard all year. They paid attention to detail and learned how to win.” The Adanacs include: Dennon Armstrong, Mitchell Beauregard, Chris Bosa, Reid Bowering, Matthew Caseley, Jalen Chaster, Caleb Fantillo, Robert Hofseth, Liam Macdonald, Matthew McIlwrick, Nathan Pelletier, Jacob Scheu, Thomas Semple, Matthew Simpson, Jordan Taylor and Ethan Ticehurst. The coaches were Jim McIntosh, Neil Dinsdale and Lance Hofseth.

DIGGING IT IN THE DUGOUT: Local ballplayers, from left, Bill Mulcahy, Scott Fenton, Steve Rizzo and Mike Willcox are ready to hit the diamond at this week’s Canadian National Oldtimers Baseball Championships at Blue Mountain Park.
Oldtimers to strut their diamond stuff Dan Olson
sports@thenownews.com The boys of summer may be getting a little slower and a tad greyer, but they’ve still got some get-up-and-go. Coquitlam’s Blue Mountain Park will be one of the host diamonds for this weekend’s Canadian National Oldtimers Baseball championships, featuring some of the best 35-and-older ballplayers from across the country. In its 17-year history, the national tournament has only seen one winner from B.C. before — in 2008 when the Burnaby-based B.C. Capitals won the over-50 category. This time around, the local boys are gunning for more hardware. Leading the charge will be four teams carved from the roots of the Poco Oldtimers Baseball League: the PoCo Cubs, Tri-City Redhawks and Haney Dodgers, competing in the over35 division, and the PoCo Colt 45s, in the over-50 division. They’ll be squaring off against 20 other clubs from as far away as Nova Scotia for national bragging rights.
“There’s nothing like a hot summer day, some baseball and a beverage garden,” Colt 45s’ Steve Rizzo said. “The guys are just looking forward to playing and seeing the different talent from around the province.” And while boys playing games always involves fun, winning is the engine driving this train. “We’re a lot more serious about this, it’s not going to be just a fun weekend off for the boys,” Redhawks manager/ player Scott Fenton said. “They’ll be asked to lay down bunts, squeeze plays, anything to move the runner across.” It’s also a wooden bat tourney, which Fenton expects will make ‘small ball’ strategy key. Parking the aluminum isn’t going to bring back the dead-ball era, though. For a handful of his teammates, it’s also an opportunity to recapture some of that magic from 1986, when Expo ‘86 was all the rage. At that time, Fenton and his Coquitlam crew rolled to a Little League national title. “That was a lot of fun and something most of us won’t ever forget. We’ve got five of those 13 players on this team and I think we’ll always be looking to
repeat that winning feeling.” It is the first time that B.C. has hosted the four-day senior hardball tourney, with the idea coming together after some locals ventured to Arizona last year as the Colt 45s — a union of friends and rivals who compete on different teams in the PCOBL. Coquitlam’s Mike Willcox and Burnaby’s Howie Snyder picked up the torch, setting up the local bid. “The deadline for the bid was fast approaching and nobody had done anything so I made contact with Howie and suggested we give it a go,” Willcox said. The 52-year-old infielder/pitcher is anticipating some hot action over the four days. Willcox believes it will be very competitive. “Solid defence will be key,” he noted. “Pitchers lose their effectiveness faster as they age so the hitters will likely be making a lot of solid contact at the plate… We’ll need some guys who don’t pitch very often — like me — to step up and throw a couple of good innings from time to time.” Rizzo envisions a hard-fought battle in the over-35 division, where pitching

depth will make the difference. “I think we’re really strong, we’ve got two 35-plus teams and one has a lot more pitching depth. (The Colt 45s) are pretty well set at a bunch of positions, but in a short series anything can happen.” He notes that the Colts’ experiences of competing at the Masters Senior Baseball League’s World Series in Arizona over the past couple of years could give them a little edge. “Our team has an advantage because most of us have played together as a team, while most of the others are just coming together. We’re old-hat with the feeling of a regular team,” Rizzo said. The tourney, which will also be played in South Surrey, New West and Burnaby, kicks off today, with local games at 2:30 p.m. between the Regina Drifters and the defending over-35 champion Yarmouth Red Knights at Blue Mountain. On Saturday, it starts up at 9 a.m. when the Spring Lake Masters play the Delta Stars in the over-44 division. For the official schedule, go to www. cnobf2010.com.

PRE-HST SAVINGS
EXTENDED
The Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) came into effect on July 1st, increasing the cost of funerals by 7%. In many cases, this amounts to an increase of $500 or more. While we assisted hundreds of families with their pre-arrangements prior to the July 1st deadline, many others were unable to complete their plans before the HST became effective. By planning ahead you will: • Relieve your family of the emotional and financial burden an unplanned funeral can cause • Prevent emotional overspending • Lock in prices at today’s rates
We’re happy to announce we are extending the pre-HST savings – but only for a limited time.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Aries March 21 - April 19: A major struggle might occur. Your humour is at a low level. If you’re challenged, calm down, study events, stride ahead slowly and steadily. Study the conditions around events – this setting is your answer: gaze on it, then plan your ensuing moves. Your career/life status is undergoing major change: a) accept this, but better yet, b) use it as an opportunity to charge forth in a way that conforms to the “new setting” around you. Though you feel expansive and impulsive, others hold your on-off button – co-operate! Saturday onward, sweet affection returns to relationships!
Cancer June 21-July 22: This could be crunch time, Cancer, especially early week. Your relationship(s) is/ are under pressure from both business/career and family/domestic/security arenas. Consider: a major link is undergoing deep, irrevocable changes, and you’ll be better off accepting this, adjusting to it. In some cases, a break-off is overdue. But if you have a good, long-term bond, don’t throw it away due to a temporary conflict. A mood of happy expectation surrounds all this!(?) Your energy and charisma surge upward Friday/Saturday – use these to handle the problems or sudden events that crop up.
Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: The years ahead accent deep changes in, and a cautious, sober, serious, slowgrowth approach toward, all security, real estate, and domestic spheres. Flow with this; embrace it. Oddly, now to 2019, your relationships will be anything but sober, predictable and cautious! Sudden hypnotic attractions, overnight decisions to marry (or split) or sparkling new oddball friends might be the norm (hints late week). Early week accents that first sober trend: be willing to fight, but make sure you’re not over-reacting. Legal, love, travel, intellectual matters shine mid-week. You’re happy!
Taurus April 20-May 20: Avoid arguments. Attend to security, property, domestic, family and supply issues for the next three weeks. Your energy might ebb – you’re in a natural “hibernation” phase until late month. Paradoxically, work demands much effort all August – but you’ll almost enjoy it by next week, as co-workers grow affectionate. (This message applies to some degree into late 2012.) Carefully regulate your energy, alternate work and rest, especially outdoors. Employment changes might emerge from legal, government, management or international quarters. Money looks good Wednesday/Thursday.
Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Your energy, charisma and clout shine! But don’t make big new starts that could soon hit the eddies of indecision, delays and back-tracking (due by Aug. 20, or sooner). Focus on wrapping up what’s already in the works. This week will be momentous, tumultuous for some of the people around you – be a friend, an aid. Your own work, health, communications, legal, intellectual, travel, publishing, educational, cultural and love spheres face deep changes/challenges, highlighted Tuesday and late week, but lasting for several years ahead. Happiness mid-week – a flirty Gemini or a deep Aries?
Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: You might receive some dire messages this week – but they are not as dire as they seem. Your spheres of work, health, duties, charities, spirituality, management, dealing with head office and government – all are under pressure, the status quo must change. Realize this and proceed with a willing, helpful attitude. Don’t get riled up Monday/Tuesday when you might sense a “challenge” – be quiet, diplomatic, study the flow of (and origin of) events. Same thing Friday/Saturday, but your mood is more mellow, understanding. Midweek, you can delve deep, learn some real secrets!
Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Lie low, conserve energy, avoid fights – plan, manage, act behind the scenes. Be charitable, spiritual, moral, honest with yourself. You “skate by” many of the powerful stresses and challenges that occur now; they affect associates more than you. Still, these major forces do affect your financial, sexual, research, intimate and health spheres, so take events, trends seriously, especially around Tuesday and late week. Your own deep sense of speculation, of taking a risk, might struggle with economic “realities” – yet you might be right! Be ambitious mid-week, diplomatic Friday.

Gemini May 21-June 20: DON’T invest. The accent lies on communications, paperwork, details, emails, calls, office chores, errands – dive in! Be curious, ask questions, explore, travel, talk to people, connect with siblings. This week contains barriers or problems in “big money,” investments, debts, mutually owned reserves, especially around Tuesday. An Aries or Libra, a “hothead” might be involved. Maintain composure; your position is pretty rock solid, as long as you don’t abandon it. Smile, be diplomatic Friday, despite provocation – sudden love could appear – careful! Complete projects, delay big starts.

Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: You’re in a wise, mellow, compassionate, loving phase. Look around you and see the major trends occurring in the world. What you understand now can boost you immeasurably in the future. Early week features dead-ends (which are really changes in direction) in money, romantic, child-oriented, creative and social spheres. Your social and love needs might directly counter your money wishes. So you can adapt, change, resign yourself, or charge ahead with a new plan. Wednesday/Thursday show you the possibilities – and the opposition. New love’s possible, but dicey! Careful, Friday.
It’s time for bargain hunting! Browse our Garage Sale section to find deals near you.
August 1 - 7 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: The main accent lies on depths, research, secrets, investments, debt, intimacy, sexual desire, health and lifestyle choices/ commitments. Here, all is well – or at least, “normal.” But another long-term drama, a subtle but important one, is slowly transforming you and your life – your personality. Here, you face great challenges, pressures – mostly on career fronts, a little in domestic areas. Definite choices are necessary. Bosses and power people are no-nonsense, skeptical, even angry: careful Tuesday. They grow more amenable Friday through August – wait to approach! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Big romantic, social, marital and partnership choices this week! Travel, publishing, advertising, education, import-export, sibling interactions and communications might be under pressure. It’s a good pressure, for it forces overdue change. (Legal and litigation questions might arise. My advice: avoid lawsuits to Sept. 15. They can prove burdensome right into October 2012, with little “win” quotient – talk it out!) Others hold the aces; be diplomatic, flexible. Something ends early week. Romance mid-week! Careful Friday: accidents and “wrong love” possible. Be an angel all week! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Lots of work to do, Pisces – dig in! For three weeks, concentrate on finishing or giving a big forward heave to ongoing projects rather than starting any new ones. This week, especially around Tuesday and Friday, brings a climax in certain difficult situations. The main problem is that your money (and sexual) interests are “fighting” your cherished wishes. For example, you want a future wedding (the wish) but you’re not sexually attracted to “Mr./Ms. Right.” Or you can’t afford the life you want (what else is new?). Careful with finances, investments. Avoid money, possession “show downs.” timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
