Joyce Lissimore is a longstanding volunteer who organizes the Port Coquitlam food bank depot. She’s known for her work with the local homeless population, which relies heavily on the Trinity United Church depot for survival. She chuckles quietly to herself as she recalls how the trunk of her car is full to the brim with books right now — she’s collecting donations of old children’s books and novels from Port Coquitlam and Port Moody libraries. “We have low-income families, and you’re going to feed your family before you buy a book,” she says. “The homeless can get books too. He also noted that the grassroots organization, which represents both businesses and residents, would prefer the station be located even further west. “Our goal has always been to position the station west of Elgin so it doesn’t affect the heritage area,” Grasty said. “The further west it can go, the least it’s going to affect the area.”

Shelter can now house more than 55 cats at a time John Kurucz jkurucz@thenownews.com The capacity to care for cats has nearly doubled at the Coquitlam Animal Shelter, thanks to more than $32,000 worth of funds raised through corporate and private donors. City councillors, staff and members of the public celebrated the expansion of the animal shelter Tuesday, as the Mariner Way facility now has the space to care for

at the site, but due to its lack of insulation, it is only used in times of emergency — a disease outbreak or fire. “We have cats that need different spaces,” said Coun. Mae Reid. “Sometimes they don’t all get along, so this is the right thing to do.” Construction on the newly minted room wrapped up about two weeks ago and was largely made possible by a $25,000 donation from Polygon Homes Ltd. Another $7,500 was raised through a

Food-related warnings issued

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued two food-related warnings this week. The first concerns Freybe brand headcheese, which was distributed in B.C. and other provinces. All products sold up to and including July 14 are affected by a recall, since they may be contaminated with salmonella. The product may have been sold from deli

counters or repackaged at stores. The second warning concerns various storemade and Signature Café brand salads sold at Safeway, which may be contaminated with E. coli. The recall includes salads that may contain a ready-to-eat romaine-based salad recalled by Fresh Express Inc. in the U.S. For specifics, visit www.inspection.gc.ca.

Three local men face charges after Maple Ridge grow-op bust

CONSTRUCTION ZONE: Work continues along Highway 1 and on the Port Mann Bridge. As part of the expansion project, speed limits will be lowered Monday to 80 km/h, from 100 km/h, on parts of Highway 1 between 208th Street in Langley and Grandview Highway. Between Grandview Highway and Cassiar, the speed limit will be 70 km/h. Fines for speeding in the construction zone will be increased to as high as $468.

Simone Blais sblais@thenownews.com Three Tri-Cities men are facing charges in relation to a simultaneous home invasion and grow-op bust in Maple Ridge Tuesday. Ridge Meadows RCMP were called to the 12200 block of 244th Street around 4:20 a.m., on a report of suspicious activity taking place. Police arrived to find a group of men attempting to gain entry to a shed on the property. A police dog helped apprehend the suspects. Investigators soon realized there was a marijuana grow operation in the shed. Police obtained a search warrant and

found 265 marijuana plants and several pounds of packaged pot that had already been harvested. Coquitlam residents Hyun Shin, 21, and Yonatan Kassa, 25, and Port Moody resident Hankil Lee, 21, were arrested and charged with assault and break and enter with the intent to commit an indict-

able offence. Homeowner Peter Martin, 37, has been charged with production of a controlled substance. All four were remanded in custody until Wednesday, when they appeared in court. Martin and Lee were released, while Kassa and Shin have been remanded in custody.

Police issue warning after indecent act Police need the public’s help after a seven-year-old girl and her mother stumbled across a suspect engaged in an indecent act in Coquitlam Wednesday. South of Rochester Pool, a mother and her daughter were walking along a trail just north of Thomas Avenue around 3:30 p.m., police say. The girl became separated from her mother after she tripped on the trail, during

which time a man approached her on the trail and exposed himself. The mother began to yell at the suspect, scaring him off. He fled north on the trail towards Rochester Pool. “Every available officer attended this call and searched the area,” Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said. “We didn’t find anything to help us locate the suspect, but given the location and time of

day, we are hoping that someone saw something.” The suspect is described as Caucasian, approximately 30 years old, standing between five-feet-eight-inches and six-feet tall with a noticeably large belly. He reportedly has a round face with dark hair and stubble, possibly with a goatee. He was wearing dark blue jeans and a navy blue shirt with writing on it.

“We believe this is an isolated incident, but we’re obviously considering all avenues of investigation at this point,” Paquet said. Anyone with information is asked to call the Coquitlam sex crimes unit at 604-9451550.

Neighbours in Barber Lane area concerned about home sizes opment of existing cottages that are replaced by 10-metre tall houses situated right at the Barber Lane roadside.” These views are a valuable community resource that should be protected, he added. “A 10-metre tall building does not just block out the inlet view. It blocks out everything, including Burnaby Mountain,” he said. “What has always been a pleasant and sunny pedestrian stroll along the Barber Lane waterside is fast becoming a walk down a dark and windy corridor with no sunlight and no views of the mountains and ocean because of 10-metre tall buildings completely blocking the sightlines.” Until Port Moody council finds a solution to their concerns, Graham and his neighbours are asking for a moratorium on all new Barber Lane building permits. They’re also requesting that council stop any new driveways from being built along the lane. They say these driveways create unnecessary

Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com A group of Barber Lane residents say monster homes are destroying their scenic view, and they want Port Moody council to stop further construction. On behalf of concerned neighbours, John Graham spoke out against residential development along the lane and the 1200 block of Ioco Road. “Barber Lane is a special jewel in Port Moody’s crown, a quiet walk with overhanging trees and views of Burrard Inlet that stretch all the way to Capitol Hill in Burnaby. However, our view corridors to the ocean are being taken away from all of us who enjoy a stroll down pedestrian-friendly Barber Lane,” Graham told council Tuesday. “In more and more areas of Barber Lane, the ocean views that we all enjoy are being lost, and the afternoon sun is being blocked out by redevel-

traffic and encourage owners to build homes to the highest possible elevation. “On most days and evenings, parking on the north side of Barber Lane leaves barely enough room for a small car to pass, and situations occur where one direction of traffic must reverse to allow the other direction to pass,” Graham said. “Heavy construction trucks and cement trucks that routinely block our lane during Barber Lane redevelopments often render Barber Lane impassible for hours and sometimes days. The constant noise, dust and vibration become an assault on the neighbourhood and create situations where fire engines cannot be guaranteed access to homes due to roadway blockages.” Planning director Tim Savoie said Port Moody developed general policies for safety reasons regarding access to homes from Ioco Road. “In many cases that I’ve

In this case, Barber Lane would be available. It’s a right of way,” Savoie said. “But that would really be only in the cases of subdivision, and these cases are, quite frankly, few and far between along Ioco Road.” Graham’s requests are set to be addressed at the next council meeting on July 27.

Search for new chamber head underway John Kurucz jkurucz@thenownews.com Having already received about 40 applications, the TriCities Chamber of Commerce is close to finding its new executive director. A four-member committee headed up by past chair Barrie Seaton is well into the process of filling the position, one that was previously held by former executive director Suzette McFaul. “We’re hoping to have someone in the chair by early to mid August, hopefully,” Seaton said Thursday. “But it depends on what they’re doing

and when they’re available.” Seaton expects the committee to compile a shortlist of potential candidates by July 23, after which time a second round of interviews will take place with the final candidates. According to Seaton, the ideal incoming executive director must have people skills and the ability to liaise with staff, chamber members, members of the public, politicians and the media. On top of that, a sound background in finances and the ability to communicate are key. “If somebody [from the media] phones, or a mayor, or someone from a mayor’s

staff phones, we have to have a point person and we have to be able to relay the chamber’s position on certain items and certain subjects,” Seaton said. “We have some very, very qualified applicants that have come to us.” Seaton said the final deadline for applications will fall sometime between July 19 and 21, and those interested are asked to e-mail him at barrie@barrieseaton.com. “It’s never too late until you ask somebody if they want the job,” Seaton said. “The individuals on the committee have the current shortlist, [but] that is not to say that we would not be in a

position, or wouldn’t welcome the opportunity, to add to that shortlist.”

Opinion

Nature does the most damage This summer, thousands of people heading to and from the B.C. Interior and Lower Mainland will pass the famous Hope Slide on Highway 3. Many will stop to view the massive environmental devastation this natural event caused 45 years ago, when 46 million cubic metres of pulverized rock, mud and debris came down the mountainside with a force so great it completely displaced the water and mud in the lake below and scraped away trees To The and vegetation on the opposite side of the valley. In the natural history of B.C., the Hope Slide is probably just one such natural environmental disaster, and it dwarfs any damage that past logging, mining and other resource extraction activities have done at the hands of man. Fortunately for the B.C. environment, environmental awareness has increased greatly over the past several decades and the requirements for industrial

activities such as logging, mining and road-building that could impinge on the environment have tightened considerably. In many cases, the rules and regulations in place for new resource extraction activities like wind energy and run-of-river projects are actually leading to the reversal of human-caused damage from the past through the rehabilitation of abandoned logging roads and the restoration and Editor enhancement of lost fish and wildlife habitats. But as the Hope Slide reminds us all, there is nothing that we humans can do to the environment that can match the devastating power of nature itself. When it comes to causing environmental damage, we are complete amateurs compared to Mother Nature. Sandra Robinson Maple Ridge

Gambling expansion comes with costs

K

a-ching! That will soon be the sound in provincial coffers, after the Liberals announced Thursday that B.C. is the first jurisdiction in North America to offer sanctioned online casino gambling. Minister of Housing and Social Development Rich Coleman said he’s trying to stem the flow of B.C. dollars going to illegal offshore gambling sites, which reportedly siphon off $100 million a year. “Of these websites, not one is accountable to the residents of British Columbia, not accountable to the players that play on their sites and not accountable to the laws of this country,” Coleman said Thursday while unveiling the new website. Of course, the real issue here is that none of those sites contribute money to provincial coffers, which the new one will, in spades. It’s interesting, then, that just one day before Coleman made his announcement, news broke that a Delta woman has launched the first lawsuit challenging the validity of the government’s voluntary self-exclusion program for gambling addicts. Joyce Ross claims she’s lost more than $330,000 since June 2007. Since gambling addiction is like any other addiction — it’s easy to say “Just stop doing it” if you don’t suffer from the problem, which is real — many people would view Ross’s claim as bogus. But here’s the thing: She placed herself on the voluntary self-exclusion list so she would not be allowed into casinos. She wanted to stop. Despite being on that list, she claims, she was allowed in. According to media reports, the self-exclusion list contains the names of a whopping 6,500 people for whom gambling is a compulsion, not a choice. It will be up to the courts to decide whether Ross’s claim has validity, but to us, one thing is clear: If the province is going to expand gambling, it needs to spend more of that money on help for those whose lives are being destroyed. It’s called being accountable.

Late-night study sessions not so great

hey came, they saw, they conquered. Or something like that. I am speaking of the recently written provincial exams students all over B.C. have just completed. Students anxiously, and in some cases fearfully, lie in wait for the results of those dreaded exam — and rightfully so. There is a lot at stake. Pass and chances of getting into a good school are high. It’s a ticket to the good life. But fail and you’re doomed: Stuck in summer school rather than the local Haider pool. Given that the series of tests meant so much, students spent countless sleepless nights during exam season feverishly cramming mass amounts of information into their heads to make the critical grade. Parents might have forgiven the late-night study sessions that were taking place during the provincials, and some may have even encouraged it. But that may not have been such a great idea. Sleep deprivation can impede students’ success and has serious side effects. I’ve seen the detrimental effects sleep deprivation is associated with first-hand: My classmates stumbling to class barely able to put one foot in front of the other, practically drooling all over their notebooks. Some scientists put the blame on biological fac-

tors — the inability to actually fall asleep. Others agree that it’s just a side effect of the teenage lifestyle. Yet others say it’s a symptom of the tech-crazy world, where students are up late texting and tweeting/twittering. The stats are staggering. In 2009 the National Sleep Foundation reported that a mere 15 per cent of teens acquire the eight to nine hours of shut-eye their growing bodies require, many losing sleep because they’re studying well into the early hours of the morning. Nayani But the Associated Professional Sleep Society says that’s the wrong formula; getting higher quality sleep is actually associated with better academic performance. In other words, catch some Zs, and you’ll get the As. Of course, getting shut-eye isn’t easy. My friends and I enjoy, and know, we need to participate in extracurricular activities because that’s what universities are looking for: students who are well-rounded. It’s not enough to be book smart. You need to excel in other aspects, too. With increased tuition fees at post-secondary institutions and a more competitive job market worldwide, it’s safe to assume that there is a lot of pressure to have an edge over your peers — pressure that can sometimes be deadly. Take the case of Sushant Patil. Just 12 years old, he was found dead in his school bathroom, just one

My View

of thousands of students in India who commit suicide every year because of school-related pressure. Thankfully, in B.C such cases are rare, but the pressure does exist. So what is the solution to the latest sleep deprivation trend, which brings with it a vast array of impediments? Here’s a thought: let’s begin the school day later, thus allowing students to catch up on their sleep. It’s also been proven that students are awake and more alert later in the day. Eastern Commerce Collegiate, a high school in Toronto, has taken the initiative and adopted this idea for a two-year pilot project. As a student who has fallen victim to sleep deprivation and witnesses it every day, I believe we should follow Eastern Commerce’s example. It may be a long shot to have such a change implemented, but it is definitely worth the thought. In the meantime, I urge parents to talk to their night owls about sleep deprivation and its side effects. Who knew those simple eight to nine hours could affect so much? Haider Nayani will be going into Grade 11 at Port Moody Secondary this September. Would you like to submit a My View column? Do recent examples of big government spending justify further Evergreen funding?

transit planning and had initially committed $400 million of the $1.2-billion total cost. However, in the 2011 to 2013 draft transit plan, Translink hasn’t allocated funding for Evergreen, leaving the timing of the project once more in doubt — despite assurances from MLA Iain Black and the province. It is up to the public to press the federal and provincial governments and TransLink to meet the 2014 schedule for completion. Let’s get Evergreen built before we choke from vehicle exhaust and the safety and peace of our beautiful cities are totally destroyed. Yvonne Harris Port Moody

Given the Liberals’ low standing in the polls, it might be an opportune time for residents to press the provincial government to come up with the additional funding rather than attempt to find a P3 investor — a process that will further delay this project and increase the cost of the Evergreen Line. Remember, the Evergreen Line was initially supposed to be under construction in 2010. How is that possible when the request for proposals will not even be reviewed by the end of the year? The third player in the transit issue is TransLink and its appointed board. The regional body has the responsibility for long-range

Last week’s question:

HIG

Re: “Timing of Evergreen funding plan off?” Friday, July 9. The Evergreen Line needs secure funding from the federal and provincial governments, not further delays while the province seeks private funding. There are two arguments the frustrated To The Editor Tri-Cities residents can use to leverage funds from Ottawa and Victoria. Stephen Harper wasted $1.2 billion on the G8 and G-20 when one-sixth of that money could have filled the funding gap for the Evergreen Line. The expensive global event appeared to be hosted to forward Harper’s image. It accomplished very little for the destitute — even ignoring the plight of women who cannot secure safe abortion in the Third World. The lavish event was wasteful and gives Tri-Cities residents a strong argument to go after the federal government for $173 million required to fill the funding gap for Evergreen. The provincial government also let the ball drop on transit by sidelining the Evergreen project in favour of the Canada Line. Although an important addition to the transit network, the link to the airport in Richmond was not as critical as the Evergreen Line that will serve the thousands of commuters cutting through Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam and Port Moody. Premier Gordon Campbell recently negotiated a devil’s bargain of $1.6 billion in exchange for agreement on the HST, angering his constituents.

Theatrix stages two very different shows

Y

oung performers with Theatrix Youtheatre are gearing up for the non-profit society’s two summertime shows, and they couldn’t be more different. Annie Jr. focuses on a spunky Depression-era orphan determined to find her parents, who abandoned her years ago on the doorstep of a New York City Orphanage run by the cruel Miss Hannigan. Shows run at 1 p.m. daily from Tuesday, July 20 to Sunday, July 25 at the John Kurucz Evergreen Cultural Centre in Coquitlam. Tickets cost $15 for general admission and $12 for students, seniors and those 12 and under. Rent, on the other hand, is based on Jonathan Larson’s Pulitzer-prize winning Broadway musical, which, in turn, is based loosely on Puccini’s opera La Bohème. The plot follows a year in the lives of seven friends living the disappearing Bohemian lifestyle in New York’s East Village. Running daily at 7 p.m. from July 20 to 25, the show is intended for mature audiences only. Tickets cost $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors. For ticket information, e-mail boxoffice@evergreenculturalcentre. ca.

Port Coquitlam’s free summer music series continue to roll out the eclectic sounds, with this weekend’s performers covering off on styles ranging from rock and jazz, to blues and “Indo Funk.” Slated for Saturday, July 17, the Live @ Leigh Square performers include the blues-rock driven act Bugsy Jive and the funk and rhythmic offerings of singer-songwriter Max Serpentini. Both performances run from 2 to 4 p.m. at Leigh Square. One day later, east will meet west in the form of Ranj Singh and the Discriminators as part of the Music in the Park concert series. The five-piece Indo-Folk group blends traditional Indian music with western influences to create a hybrid sound representing both cultures. The show goes from 2 to 4 p.m. at Lions Park.

These can be thick colonizers of recently cleared soil, but tend to thin out as other plants re-establish and compete. Biennials with tiny fragile seedlings, foxgloves seldom infiltrate where healthy vegetation is already present. Originally from Europe, foxgloves are pretty, longflowering and loved by hummingbirds and bees — but some people detest them due to their huge seed production and also because they’re very poisonous. Other gardeners love their spectacular bells, long-flowering habits and sturdy stems, but wear gloves when dealing with them and remove all the unwanted seed capsules. Gardeners with sensitive skin have reported soreness after

handling foxgloves. Most of the 20 foxglove species originally came from countries around the Mediterranean. Generally, they’re hardy to Zone 4, tolerant of most soils, reach about three feet (one metre) and are adaptable to sun or shade. They bloom from the base of the flower spike upward. Meanwhile, the stem grows longer, new buds form and become flowers, and seed capsules stretch far up the stalk. Left long enough, seed capsules will outstretch flowers. Their longevity is variable. A warm winter may see a few biennial foxgloves becoming perennial (at least for a while). Meanwhile, perennial species of foxgloves are often shortlived (but not always). Foxgloves have a long history as magical plants of many names, including “dragons mouth,” “witches gloves” and “fairy caps.” Like other

This hybrid is notable for its evergreen leaves (which neither parent has) and large crushed-strawberry coloured bells. It’s only two feet (60 cm) high. D. ambigua has a tiny cultivar called “temple bells,” which fits well into containers. Temple bells produces one-inch (2.5 cm) bells on nine-inch (23 cm) stalks, and if seed is sown very early, it will flower later that year. Kids can drop by the library for a rockin’ good time The Port Moody Rock and Gem Club wants Summer Reading Club kids to know that playing with rocks is a great way to spend their time. Kids are invited to visit the library on Friday, July 23 from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. as gem club

member Rose Kapp demonstrates the many facets of this fun hobby. Participants will be introduced to the art and craft of working with precious and semi-precious stones. During an illustrative presentation, Kapp will display the techniques used to work stones, and show

many samples of rough and finished stone. This is an excellent program to find out more about potential careers in earth science and more about the rock and gem club. Kids will even receive a parting gift to take home. This program is drop-in and suitable for

school-aged children. For more information about the Summer Reading Club and its programs, call the library at 604-469-4577 or visit the library online at www.library.portmoody.ca. The library is located at 100 Newport Dr.

Ours then came with an additional driver confidence package ($1,550) that included active Xenon headlights and a heads-up instrument display. A touring package ($895) added 19-inch wheels, a sport mode on the transmission and suspension upgrades. Rear seat airbags ($415) and a navigation package ($3,465) that included a backup camera and an audio upgrade were also included in the total price. Production of the new LaCrosse was moved to Kansas from Ontario. The 3.6-litre engine, however, is made in Canada.

ll-new for 2010, the LaCrosse is a fresh breed of Buick that’s stylish without being flamboyant and offers measured performance with a high level of luxury and cutting-edge new technology at a reasonable price point. In Canada, LaCrosse replaces Allure in the Buick lineup, but you might find some early 2010s with an Allure badge. In the U.S., the Allure was sold as the LaCrosse and the new generation car was seen as an opportunity to do some cross-border name unification. A sensible move. LaCrosse straddles the high end of the family car market and crosses over into the lightluxury segment. In entry level form it would compete with well-equipped versions of the Toyota Camry or Honda Accord, yet a top-end LaCrosse is more likely to be cross-shopped against a Lexus ES350 or an Acura TL. In Europe and even more so in China, however, the Buick brand is recognized as a maker of premium luxury class automobiles, and the LaCrosse was also designed and developed with these markets in mind. For instance, particular attention was paid to rear seat space and fittings, since many of its Asian owners prefer to be driven than to drive. The chassis development work on LaCrosse was done in Europe and it started with the stiffest sedan platform that GM has ever produced. So there’s also a payoff for owners who enjoy being behind the steering wheel and an all-wheel-drive version with an electronic lim-

It was also the engine in my test LaCrosse CXS, which came with a number of options that upped its total price to $47,220. Inexpensive it’s not, but good value considering what’s included in that price. Rear passenger space key to owners who prefer to be driven design that arcs around the cabin and wraps into the door panels. It’s an elegant upscale interior with double-stitched leather upholstery seams and tasteful use of chrome and wood trim. The technology onslaught was very impressive: keyless entry, a push-button engine start, an electric park brake, heated and cool air ventilated front seats, a heads-up display and it even had a heated steering wheel. While hard to find fault, more storage spots to put stuff in and around the console would be nice. The pocket-style front door pull is on the small side and could be easier to grab. The door was also very easy to swing out fully, which made it a stretch to retrieve. No complaints about the rear passenger space — it’s excellent. Well-supported and comfortable seats with tall seatbacks. Smaller kids, however, may find it difficult to see out the side windows, because of its high door design.

The Drive

When pushed, the 3.6-litre engine can provide a big dose of acceleration punch and will get the LaCrosse to 100 km/h in less than eight seconds, and it sounds good doing it, too. In manual mode, a rev limiter kicks in at about 7,000 r.p.m. and it doesn’t up-shift the transmission. The steering feel is on the light side, especially at low vehicle speeds. Its straightline centring action could be more positive and there’s a hint of some associated torque steer on hard acceleration. The ride, on the other hand, is excellent — supple and soft, but not bouncy as the LaCrosse glides along the road. Cabin quietness is also exceptionally good. Buick’s quiet tuning sound control initiatives include use of acoustic glass, triple door seals, acoustic mats and extensive use of sound-deadening materials. Large A-pillars limit forward side vision to some degree, but overall vision is as good as most in

Unhappiness is often rooted in a poor sense of self-worth abusive relationships. Though it may seem basic, the concept of self-worth is not so easy to define. It is more than finding a job in which you feel both capable and needed. It is more than a strong ego. It is more than personal or social success. A healthy sense of selfworth can give you the courage to deal with the detours and challenges of life — with illness, with tragedy and loss. It can help you thrive as your body ages and the years behind you outnumber the years ahead. It allows you to

We can be physically healthy, respected by those around us and have all our material needs met, but if we feel worthless or unworthy, we remain miserable. We can see what we need to do to improve our lives, but if we feel incapable of doing what needs to be done, we settle for the status quo. A top-shelf wine from the Okanagan, the Allegretto Merlot 2007 from La Stella winery ($45) is cropped from grapes at less than one ton per acre, which is about as low as you can go to create a high-end wine. Plum, dark chocolate and black fruit emerge, followed by the essence of cigar box, nutmeg and herbal tobacco. It is quite tannic on the palate, but some interesting herbal notes follow through into a long finish. I would think this wine could be cellared another 10 years. So a typical week ends in the tasting lounge. I would estimate that only about 10 to 20 per cent of the wines tried in the tasting lounge make it to the column, so these are among the best. Salut!

ADOPT-A-PET LEX

• ANIMAL: CAT • BREED: DSH • SEX: NEUTERED MALE • AGE: ADULT

Lex is a very friendly and outgoing kinda cat. He loves people and is snuggly and playful. While Lex is fairing well in our main cat room, it's apparent he would prefer to be the only pet in the home. Lex is a healthy boy and likely around 2-3 years old.

ROYCE

• ANIMAL: CAT • BREED: DSH • SEX: NEUTERED MALE • AGE: ADULT

Royce is a very handsome boy with a friendly personality. He is affectionate and makes friends with everyone who walks through the door. Royce is getting along well with the other cats and would do fine in a multi-cat home. He is a fairly young cat, roughly 2 years old and in good health.

FOREST

• ANIMAL: CAT • BREED: DMH • SEX: NEUTERED MALE • AGE: ADULT

Forest is very affectionate and loves to cuddle. He has the tiniest voice and will talk to you to get attention. Forest has been sticking to himself but would most likely be fine with another cat that has a similar personality. He is a gentle and shy boy who would love a quiet environment where he can snuggle up with his new family.

SHILOH

• ANIMAL: DOG • BREED: CATTLE DOG X LAB MIX • SEX: SPAYED FEMALE • AGE: ADULT

Dakota is a typical young Border Collie, she has a ton of energy! Dakota is friendly and outgoing but needs some work on her manners and obedience. Dakota has some separation anxiety and needs an experienced owner to help her overcome her fears. Dakota gets along with most dogs but can get easily overwhelmed. She would need to be introduced to any dog in the home prior to adoption.

Operated by the City of Coquitlam, the kennel is conveniently located at Mariner Way and Austin Avenue in its own private enclosure at the Coquitlam Animal Shelter. Boarding Fees are: • 1 dog in 1 kennel/24hr period: $24.00 • 2 dogs (same family) in 1 kennel/24hr period: $36.00 (dogs' combined weight must not exceed 100lbs) • Double kennel/24hr period: 2 dogs (same family): $48.00 3 dogs (same family) sharing: $60.00 (dogs' combined weight must not exceed 200lbs) $5.00/extra fee for medication - up to (2) twice/day $24.00 non-refundable deposit required for all bookings Guests enjoy: • Spacious indoor / outdoor kennels • Heated Floors • Daily Exercise • Dog owners are to bring their dog's own food and treats which will be served as directed

Shiloh is an energetic and friendly girl. She was recently in a home for a short time and we found out that she is clean and quiet inside. Shiloh does need some work on her manners and how to deal with her anxiety in an appropriate manner. Shiloh gets along with some dogs, but would likely be best as the only dog in the home. A home with dog experience would be an asset.

BUNDEE

• ANIMAL: RABBIT • BREED: LIONHEAD • SEX: SPAYED FEMALE • AGE: ADULT

Bundee is an adorable little bun with cute little wisps of fur on her head. She seems very friendly and is easy to handle outside of her enclosure. Bundee currently doesn't have a mate and may enjoy the company of another rabbit!

• Special care and attention from experienced, trained City of Coquitlam staff to ensure the health and well-being of our special guests, all dogs must: • Be at least four months old • Have a current dog license • Be up to date on all vaccinations (rabies, distemper, parvovirus and kennel cough)

Score Card

Weekend to map out Reds’ playoff road

The playoff picture isn’t completely crystal clear, but the message is in high definition. Closing out with some big wins will do a world of good for the Coquitlam Reds. The B.C. Premier Baseball League squad currently sits sixth among the top-seven playoff spots with a 23-17 record. However, there is still the chance that they could fall to eighth, which would require a one-game playoff contest against the ninth-place finisher for their playoff lives. With only four games left to play, Reds’ head coach Kyle Williams would like nothing better than to enter next week’s postseason with a bounce. “I want to finish well: for one you fell better going into the playoffs on a winning note,” the first-year premier league skipper said. “And No. 2, if you win and a team or two above you loses a few you can really climb up and get a better matchup.” Coquitlam finished the past week with a 1-2 record, losing 10-0 to the fourth-place Fraser Valley Chiefs last week, before rebounding to split a twin bill with the North Shore Twins. In the 9-5 win, Jared Poirier stepped up and delivered a solid, if not sterling, performance by going the distance. Although the righthander gave up 12 hits and five earned runs, he didn’t walk anyone and wasn’t easily rattled. “Jared threw fine, he gave us a chance and our bats gave us the lead,” Williams said. “It certainly wasn’t a 9-5 game, as (North Shore) scored three late just to make it look close.” Designated hitter Brent Foreman lashed three hits, while Tanner White went 2for-4 with two runs driven in. Shortstop Steve Kandborg also registered two RBI on a double. They dropped the nightcap 6-2, having ran out of veteran pitching. The Reds will face the 8-30 Victoria Eagles, in a rare Friday make-up doubleheader, noon and 2:30 p.m. at Mundy Park. They close out the season Sunday in Abbotsford against the No. 5 Cardinals, A three-or-four win weekend could see the team move up in the standings, with fourth place the highest target.

Athletes from a variety of sports and a range of levels are finding out the benefits of specific training regimens prescribed by Twist Sport Conditioning Centre specialists like Tamara Pickford, at right. These clients are working out on a balance board.

Local athletes get new ‘Twist’ in training Dan Olson sports@thenownews.com A series of groin and abdominal injuries to his soccer players a handful of years ago had Port Moody Soccer Club’s Bob Favelle wondering about cause and prevention. As coincidental as they seemed, Favelle knew that those types of reoccurring injuries were not random. With curiousity turning to concern, the soccer coach knew enough to call a professional. He turned to Twist Sport Conditioning. Considered one of the leading strength and conditioning centres in North America, the North Vancouverbased business had been used by professional and recreational athletes. Clients like Mark Messier, Hakeem Olajawon and Justin Morneau had turned to physiologist Peter Twist to elevate their games and gain an edge. After Favelle’s athletes followed the Twist sport-specific program, he

noticed a big reduction in the number of muscle injuries. Now, with the recent opening of a Twist Sport Conditioning Centre in Port Coquitlam, Favelle is funneling his current crop of premier and under21 soccer players into a new world of training. “We were over the moon waiting for the (centre) to open,” Favelle said. “Our experience five years ago really opened my eyes to what conditioning means… We’ve been trying to find something to help these guys strengthen their core and improve their flexibility, and we’ve found it.” The facility is not a gym and it is not a one-size fits all, Twist TriCities co-owner George Watts notes. Despite its well-deserved reputation as a place where elite athletes come to exceed their peak performance, it is also where players from all competitive levels can unlock some of the secrets to their future sports successes. “We had people come in and kick the tires when we opened,” Watts added. “The people we serve cover a broad

spectrum, from high school, recreation and elite performance.” Utilizing Twist’s individualized training system, which includes smart muscle training, the centre’s trainers and coaches are able to tailor specific programs for each client. Twist, who is a world-recognized exercise physiologist with 11 years of NHL experience as a conditioning coach, has made sure that his program is accessible to all athletes, from the elite to the weekend warriors. Each individual is treated separately, Watts says, focusing on their physical needs, goals and targets. Core strength, speed and agility are often where the journey starts. Bob Doig knows of the program’s benefits. Involved in the fitness industry himself, he’s always mixed in some training with his competitive sports routine. It wasn’t until he noticed that he couldn’t keep up with his teammates on his rec hockey team that he sought out some help. “As you get a little older your game

goes downhill, and I was noticing it,” the 42-year-old said. “You can’t keep up with the younger players, and I noticed I had lost a little off my start.” When Watt and partner Lynn Elliott opened the doors a few months ago on Broadway Street, Doig stepped in. Ever since, his game has stepped up. “I’ve gone from a goal every five games to almost a goal a game,” he said. “I had a referee skate up to me and ask what I had been doing… My wife’s noticed that my posture is better and I generally feel better, too, and it’s just been four weeks.” Making it all the more unique is how the centre’s qualified instructors is able to tailor things around the athlete, their goals and their sport. “We looked at the area as underserved from a training perspective,” Watts said. “That and the fact that it is so central, people come here from all over the Lower Mainland to work, train, compete and relax. The area really lends itself for fitness and activities, with the mountains, trails and facilities.”

Coquitlam Sharks turn 50! Coquitlam celebrates ‘Coquitlam Sharks’ Week’ In 1960 a group of Coquitlam lifeguards made the fateful decision to form a competitive summer swim club, a club they aptly named the Coquitlam Sharks Swim Club. The club became a member of the BC Summer Swimming Association (BCSSA) a provincial organization that establishes rules of competition and organizes Provincial Championships each year for summer swimming in BC. During the Sharks first year they had only twelve swimmers, but over the past 50 years they have expanded, adding diving and water-polo to their supported sports. Today the club boasts a membership of over 200 athletes and during the last 50 years, they have won 16 Provincial Swim Championships and 14 Provincial Championships in water-polo and diving. In 1987, the club became a society incorporated under the Society Act of the Province of British Columbia and to more accurately reflect their expansion beyond competitive swimming into water polo and diving, in 1991, they changed their name to the Coquitlam Sharks Aquatic Club. Although the Sharks are one of the most significant users of Coquitlam’s outdoor pools, their primary facility is R.L. Spani in beautiful Mundy Park. championships as well as two Provincial Championships. The Sharks’ aquatic program is designed for participants age 5 to 19 and accommodates beginning swimmers to the most seasoned competitors. Their program divides the team into groups of similar age and skills to accommodate instruction and coaching that can most effectively help each athlete. To run their program, the club hires over

15 skilled coaches each year, making it one of the largest summer student employers in Coquitlam. In fact, many of the lifeguards and aquatic leaders working for the City of Coquitlam, developed their aquatic skills, swimming for the Sharks. Boxla player nets big honour In her work as both a player and a volunteer, Coquitlam’s Danielle Wilson never imagined that her efforts would garner more than a pat on the back and a lot of enjoyment. Just the reward of being among her friends and playing her favourite sport was more than enough bounty. But Wilson’s work on both sides of the boards was recognized at the B.C. Female Championships last week when she was chosen the BCLA Pepsi Player of the Year. “I was really, really surprised,” Wilson said of the award. “I got the impression from my dad that I didn’t have a chance, that there were so many people qualified for the award. I was pretty happy to hear it.” Wilson, who plays with the Coquitlam midget team, had just had an apendectomy two weeks before the start of the provincials. That didn’t stop her from playing, though. “I was really excited just to be playing. This was our strongest team, but I was also a little worried about taking a stick to the stomach.” Everything went smoothly until the final, where the squad ran out of steam in a 7-1 loss to New Westminster. Nominated by Coquitlam Minor Lacrosse, Wilson was chosen for her work as a player, a referee and volunteer with Coquitlam minor and KidSport Tri-City. She was selected among candidates from across the province. Wilson admits it’s the camaraderie and friendships that are her main rewards. “My team, that’s what I enjoy the most. It’s always a similar group of girls who get together to play lacrosse, then we go and play our different sports the rest of the year... I think lacrosse is an amazing sport, and when I can help others learn about it or enjoy it, that’s what I like to do.” Larry Wright/NOW

CLOSING THE GAP: A Coquitlam novice player, left, puts the squeeze on an Oakville opponent during the advanced division final at the Jack Crosby Lacrosse Tournament.

Adanacs croon to Crosby title

It took some heroics to come out kings of the Jack Crosby All-Star Novice tournament.

The Sharks Celebrate A week full of events celebrating their 50th anniversary

The competition was tougher, the water was colder, and it rained harder.” says Sharks Past President and committee member, Jeff Brace. The committee is also organizing alumni races during the lunch break at the Sharks ‘A’ Swim Meet at R.L. Spani Pool On Saturday July 24th. “We’re really going to find out how many of our past swimmers have actually maintained their skill and fitness levels— hopefully we won’t need the services of the lifeguarding staff!” says Parish. Overall it is shaping out to be a fun week for past and present Sharks members.

This year the Coquitlam Sharks Aquatic Club celebrates their 50th birthday and next week they will be doing it in style. “We wanted to plan events that celebrate the past as well as give the Sharks’ alumni the opportunity to get together and share memories” says Barry Parish, Chair of the Sharks 50th Anniversary Committee. Next Thursday, July 22nd at 6:00 pm, they will be holding an Alumni Banquet at All Saints Parish, 821 Fairfax Street

in Coquitlam. “The committee has been busy contacting past Sharks families and gathering memorabilia, that will feed the stories of summers spent poolside”, says Parish. “The night is guaranteed to be rich in nostalgia and it doesn't matter which of the Sharks’ five decades you were (or are) from, you know that the times were faster, the dives were scarier, and the goals were prettier.

For more information on next week’s celebrations, go to the Coquitlam Sharks 50th Anniversary website at: www.Sharks50th.ca

That’s exactly what the Coquitlam Adanacs did last week, knocking off Ontario’s Oakville Hawks 10-7 in the final to cap a great run. Eric Bouma scored four goals, as Coquitlam raced ahead with three quick strikes to start the third. Daniel Miller’s marker stood up as the eventual winner. Netting a hat trick was Daniel Sudiro, while Gabriel Procyk, the goldmedal MVP, also tallied. Port Coquitlam, meanwhile, recovered from their first loss of the season to claim the bronze with an 8-3 triumph over New Westminster. Kyle Osted was named the game’s MVP, while Austin Wahl and netminder Bill Holden picked up all-star honours. • The PoCo Saints novice girls team kept marching on right to the Jack Crosby All-Star tournament gold medal, copping the top prize with an 8-3 decision over Langley. Two-time game MVP Cassandra Gill cashed in for six goals, with singles by Graclyn Dean and Alyssa Wahl. To get there, the squad had to complete an incredible comeback in the semifinal. Down 6-1 early in the third, PoCo battled back to beat Coquitlam 8-7 in overtime. Gill scored six times. Earning MVP honours along the way were Megan Morris, Molly Schmidt and Dean. PoCo’s novice intermediate boys squad, meanwhile, collected silver at the tournament, powered by game MVP performances by Mitchell Bye, Justin Egli, Carson Grant, Jaden Rudland and Dhillon Smith. • The Coquitlam female peewee Adanacs bested Burnaby 9-6 to take the bronze at the provincial championships in Port Moody. It came on the heels of a decisive 7-3 trumping of New West in the semifinal. Picking up Warrior Fair Play awards were Coquitlam’s Sara Magill and Port Moody’s Natasha Tombs, while Mieke Stobbart, of the Adanacs, joined Port Moody’s Kara Nickle on the all-star team.

Taurus April 20-May 20: Remain flexible, curious, restless and talkative until mid-week. You could obtain a last-minute agreement Sunday-Tuesday. Secrets, investments, intimacy, lifestyle choices are important and fortunate Tuesday eve/night. But be cautious with these Wednesday/Thursday. Thursday begins a month of home-related, security, family, property and similar themes (gardening, landscaping, nutrition, kid’s welfare, etc.) This week also begins 26 months of slowness in work, employment, machinery and health zones. Kids will be more work. Rewards come from hard work. Avoid lawsuits. You’ll be fine! Gemini May 21-June 20: Thursday begins a fourweek period of heightened communications, travel, restlessness and casual friendships. You’ll generally love this time. Be curious, ask questions, go exploring, open newspapers. Now to October 2012, your loves and pleasures meet sobriety. Romance, hobbies, sports, risk-taking, creative projects and the pursuit of pleasure – all become harder, slower. But this area can succeed if you’re prepared to be responsible and loyal. Romance could flower with an older or younger person. You’ll succeed in research, investments, sex and health. This week’s future plan is wrong.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Chase romance, pleasure, beauty and creative or sports success Sunday to Tuesday – you’ll ride a winning streak! Jobs begun Tuesday night will succeed. Thursday begins a productive four-week phase of earnings, spending, memory and other possessions. But this week also begins 26 months of increased responsibility in domestic arenas, with kids, property, security, nutrition and all foundational concerns. You’ll have to work harder at these, and you might decide to let go of some situations (or relationships) that are just too much work. This week’s “career partnership” idea won’t work. Wait.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: A truly romantic month begins July 22. Two years of slow slogging in work end, but your relationships begin a two-year phase of sobriety and “slow movement.” Now to late 2012, if you take an antagonistic approach the best you’ll win is freedom; you’ll lose in most else. Until October 2012, these do not work: chasing love for ego reasons, seeking recognition, fame, trying to optimistically sell to new clients. These do work: loyalty (e.g., old clients, present spouses) romance with other generations, career partnerships, cooperation. Tuesday night: understanding brings joy!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: No fireworks, but this week is a turning point. Now to October 2012, you will be more sober, practical, no-nonsense. You will be determined to put your life on a sound foundation, especially in real estate, family and similar areas. Yes, retirement’s coming! You’ll do this slowly and carefully. A major or basic change might be involved: e.g., relocation. Relationships need to be looked at. If you’ve been a party type, that ends for two years. Thursday starts a month of travel, talk, friends, errands. Be curious! DON’T start a relationship or negotiations this week; one might end.

Leo July 23-Aug. 22:You travel a lucky money streak (to Aug. 6) so take advantage, buy luxury items, ask for a pay raise, negotiate a deal, etc. DON’T overspend. Money can flow through you like water, and you could end up poorer, despite taking more in! (If you’re into self-knowledge, look at the underlying reasons: Guilt? Lack of optimism?) Your weeks of weariness end Thursday, when a month of energy, charisma, effectiveness and clout begin! However, this isn’t a good week to start major projects. A romantic notion ends. The two years ahead slow communications, yet make this a fertile employment field.

Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Mellow yields to functional. Thursday ends weeks of fairly relaxed pondering, love, cultural pursuits, understanding and begins a month of ambition, prestige and career effort. Dress well, be prepared to meet bosses, higher-ups. But don’t start any work projects yet – wait until next week. This week ends two years of restricted socializing. Now to October 2012 you’ll meet fairly easy progress in many areas. However, dealings with government agencies, institutions and head office might be burdensome – more red tape, more communication levels with which to deal: effort needed.

Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Every party must end, every high note yield to a quieter one. Have your fun (and travel, contact people) Sunday to Tuesday. Be domestic, rest up mid-week. (Real estate, kids’ savings plans are lucky Tuesday night.) Thursday begins a month of quietude, rest and retreat. However, a bunch of social influences will keep you interactive: your graciousness will continue; but your smouldering sexuality will yield to talkativeness. Still, get your rest. Contemplate, plan, do charitable things, deal with government agencies. DO NOT invest, change your life, or “start sex” this week.

Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Lie low, work in the background Sunday to Tuesday. Think about your future, and how to get there. Your energy returns Tuesday eve to Thursday – but this is not a good week to start any project – or romance. Work on what’s already started, on research, finances, health, intimacy and safety. Thursday begins a month of mellow love and understanding, intellectual prowess, higher education, far travel, cultural involvements. Two years of hard career burdens end now; but two years of sober social activity begin, involving other generations or money (e.g., take the boss golfing).

July 18 - 24 Capricorn Dec.22-Jan.19: Relationships move from centre-stage to “under-stage” – they begin to operate secretly, subconsciously, or intimately. In business, you move from negotiation to actual funding. You bond more deeply, or break apart. This, for the month ahead. The present week brings another turning point: two years of philosophical outlook, of learning or studying situations, ends. A two-year career, ambition, prestige and status phase, the most important in 30 years, begins. Live up to it! Start nothing this week except a security or realty deal. Happiness, Sunday-Tuesday! Power, energy late week. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: At last, a month of weariness and drudgery ends – so do two years of financial restrictions! The weeks ahead bring fresh horizons, competition, opportunities, fights and loves, negotiation and litigation. The rancour and intensity of last winter and spring has fled, so if you’re in a fight, it’s possible to work out a deal; if you don’t, August/September could bring a lawsuit, a long, dreary, unprofitable one. If you aren’t fighting, the weeks ahead bring exciting meetings, intimate affections, sweet whispers. Careful with your speech this week: stray words return to bite. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The past two years have brought restrictions, even disappointment in relationships. If you’ve succeeded, found love or fine partners, healed bonds, it has only come through hard work. Now, this phase ends. The two years ahead (to October 2012) transfer this need for “hard work” to your sexual and financial spheres. You can truly achieve your dreams in these areas – if you work hard to that end. Nothing comes of nothing. The month ahead features work, heath and machines. Be wise Sunday-Tuesday, ambitious mid-week, social Friday/ Saturday. Don’t spend big, nor start a money project. timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
