Students study how to be happy Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com

B

e proactive. Synergize. Think win-win. These buzzwords are now part of the everyday vernacular of students and staff at Mary Hill Elementary. This new vocabulary stems from Sean Covey’s book The 7 Habits of Happy Kids, which has been incorporated into the school’s classroom culture. Starting last fall, students studied the illustrated storybook and learned life lessons that can continue after class is dismissed. Covey’s book — modelled after his father’s popular publication The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People — outlines seven methods kids can use to live a happy, balanced life. These simple principles encourage kids to take charge, develop plans, prioritize, seek common solutions, listen first, work together and maintain balance. Principal Margo McKnight said the school community now has a common language, thanks to the seven habits and the golden rule. “The kids have responded very well to it, and they’re all at different stages in their understanding,” she said. “But these really are basic strategies to help you become a successful adult, and that’s what we want all these children to be — successful, responsible on whatever path they take after they get out of Grade 12.” Beginning the first week of school, English and French immersion students met in grade-level groups to focus on Covey’s concepts. They continued to meet every second Friday until they learned all seven lessons. From there, they branched out with theatrical presentations and literacy events based on the book. Special guest speakers, including Port Coquitlam Mayor Greg Moore and the school’s RCMP liaison officer, explained how the same habits help them in their adult lives. And Mary Hill students are already seeing the effects in their own young years. Grade 5 student Meghan Houlihan said each class is enjoying the seven habits, which makes communication easier. “I think it’s so cool just seeing little children using the seven habits … The way kids interact with others now has changed,” said the 10-year-old. “It changes for me the things that I do at home, outside of school and at school. Like when I learned about being proactive, I was more aware. I have three little sisters and a little

brother, and they always say they’re bored. I can now set an example for them and be proactive and not say I’m bored and help them with their situation.” Fellow Grade 5 student Hannah Menard said the seven habits have helped her solve problems with family and friends. “It runs through my mind every time something happens with my sister — first of all, seek to understand before being understood. I watch my sister’s expressions, like the way her face goes or the way she walks off or the way she’s talking to me,” she said. “Then I also think about what could happen in the future if I said this or if I said that, so I begin with the end in mind.” Tracy Macdonald, Hannah’s teacher, has noticed a difference in both herself and her students. “I find if I’m teaching something or if there’s a conflict or maybe an organization problem, you can just say, ‘Put first things first’ or ‘Begin with the end in mind.’ They get it right away,” she said. “You don’t have to do a big song and dance about why it’s important to go home and figure out the stuff you need to do. It’s just an instant reminder.” Younger students, like eight-yearold Cameron Hawker, are also enthusiastic. “My favourite is being proactive because I really like making up my own games,” Cameron said. For Kindergarten-Grade 1 teacher Chealsy Fraser, life is easier after implementing the seven habits, since there’s a new level of respect in the classroom. “We hear the language out there on the playground. You hear it in the hallways — kids actually talking to each other and using the words and saying, ‘What I saw you just do right now, that was being very proactive,’” she said. “And these are big, juicy words. These are little five-year-olds who, at the beginning of the year were sucking their thumbs and now they’re saying, ‘I’m being proactive right now.’ It’s fabulous. It’s amazing how much it works. We find that in a school, building that common language is so powerful. And if you have that, it makes things go smoothly.” In September, Mary Hill will renew its focus on the seven habits and will embed the language into its code of conduct, added the school principal. “We’re trying to make it a living and breathing part of this. It’s not an addon,” McKnight said. “It’s something we’re going to explore, and we want to go even deeper next year.”

The 7 Habits of Happy Kids: • “Be proactive” reminds kids to take charge and assume responsibility for their own fun or boredom. • “Begin with the end in mind” encourages kids to plan ahead. • “Put first things first” teaches kids to delay gratification by working first and playing later. • “Think win-win” urges kids to find solutions that allow everyone to win. • “Seek first to understand, then to be understood” stresses the importance of listening to words and body language before talking. • “Synergize” reminds kids to value difference and work together to solve problems. • “Sharpen the saw” encourages kids to strive for balance in body, heart, mind and soul.

environment. Discovery centre board chair Margaret Mason said the Forrest brothers take pride in three generations of strong family spirit, community involvement and river stewardship. “Mike and Ray have worked side by side since they were old enough to help their dad. They grew up on the river commercial fishing, beachcombing and towing,” she said at Monday’s council meeting. “Now with their wives … and other family members, they still work side by side as coowners of Forrest Marine.”

Mike Forrest Coun. Darrell Penner said the Forrest family represents “living history,” having earned many mentions in history books.

“They say one person can make a difference, and you’ve got a family here that’s really helped shape this community,” Penner said. From his seat at the council table, Mike said his family is honoured to be part of the waterfront community. “We represent the third generation of our family on the river playing boats,” he said. “It is an absolute delight to be able to go to work to do the things that you do in a place you love to be. The river and the waterfront community are us. It is who we are. It’s where we come from, thanks to Mom and Dad.”

Soldiers return flags to Port Coquitlam Jennifer McFee jmcfee@thenownews.com Four Terry Fox graduates received a warm welcome in their hometown after returning from a seven-month military tour in Afghanistan. Warrant officer Ellick Pau and corporals Justin Litzenberger, Kyle Yorston and Trevor Street stood before Port Coquitlam city council Monday night to return the city flags they raised in Afghanistan as a reminder of home. Pau was involved with the Kandahar City provincial reconstruction team, made up of 500 Canadians from across the nation. The group started a project to fly flags from their various home cities at the entrance to their camp. Pau flew two Tri-Cities flags to represent both his teenage home in Port Coquitlam and his current home in Coquitlam. Meanwhile, Litzenberger, Yorston and Street were unable to fly Port Coquitlam’s flag at their base due to insurgents, so they decided to raise it inside their tent instead. When Moore thanked the group for honouring the community and the country, the full council chamber echoed with applause. “We’re not only happy to celebrate their safe return, we’d like to take the opportunity to thank them for representing Port Coquitlam in such a personal and affirmative way,” Moore said. Street expressed gratitude for the support and explained that his recent experience in Afghanistan was significantly different from his previous tour in 2006. “It was like night and day,” Street said. “Things are improving for people there. Canada’s soldiers aren’t dying for no reason. We are pursuing a means to an end, which we will achieve soon.” Yorston added that a dam project has helped provide power to Kandahar, and life is starting to improve for its residents. “Women and children are getting proper education. Women are actually being able to work. All of these things are actually happening over in this country … These people are being helped, and we saw it over there every day,” Yorston said. “I wish to recognize the same thing, that we have seen a difference over there.”

Opinion

Help city streamline bylaws Re: “City to streamline bylaws,” Wednesday, June 23. I fully support Coun. Linda Reimer’s proposal for the creation of a commission to examine city processes and bylaws to make recommendations that will lead to the reduction of red tape and regulation in Coquitlam. This initiative is a necessary first step towards getting more prudence and efficiency into the city’s operations and regulatory framework by inviting the participation of those citizens and businesses who are in the know on these To The issues. A similar commission in Winnipeg produced a 144-page report containing 30 recommendations, 29 of which were approved by city council. I ask all Coquitlam taxpayers and businesses to get behind this initiative and to so inform the mayor and councillors prior to the July 5 council meeting when the proposal goes to a vote. Make memories with nature

The other morning I was lost in aimless thoughts while walking along a roadside on the outskirts of town. I was only vaguely aware of the light breeze blowing across my face until I was overwhelmed by the fresh, delicate fragrance of wild roses. Memory is said to react to the sense of smell more readily than the other four senses. Fragments of old memories began to swirl about in my mind and I knew others were present, even though Editor they were not quite identifiable. I felt a tangible connection to days long gone — childhood innocence, carefree summers and outdoor adventures. It is my hope that school children of all ages will take the opportunity this summer to explore and appreciate the natural world and thereby create their own lifelong memories. Observing and photographing birds can be one way of reaching out to touch the amazing hand of Mother Nature. Lloyd Atkins Vernon

Our View

Did the G20 and G8 summits matter?

A

side from the fake lake — we can all agree that the fake lake was worth every penny — did we get any value at all from last weekend’s G20 and G8 summits? Well, those who like to dress in black masks and smash windows certainly achieved their heart’s desires. What about the world leaders? Well, they may have enjoyed their photo op against the (fake) backdrop of the Toronto skyline. But their agreement is a hollow one. Reducing deficits and cutting debt may be a worthwhile goal, but the agreement is voluntary, unenforceable and riddled with exceptions. Worse, few questions were raised about the human costs of the age of austerity world leaders want to usher in. What about the protesters outside the Great Wall of Toronto? Well, aside from the window smashers, they also left disappointed. Many were arrested for the nefarious crime of Being Near Actual Goons, some were tear gassed, others simply got damp. Not one of them ever got within earshot of the world leaders, and the media generally ignored their messages to focus on the vandalism, the riot squads and breaking news from the World Cup. The police were not served well by the exercise either. Depending on your point of view, they either held back too much, allowing a good portion of Queen Street to be smashed up, or they overreacted, arresting more than 900 mostly innocent people in the largest mass arrests in Canadian history. Canada, through taxes, spent billions to wine and dine world leaders, butter up the international media and keep the riffraff at bay. Perhaps the next world summit should be held via video conference instead. We could even send everyone a screensaver image of a real Canadian lake. ••• Wondering where the Canada Day photos are? Due to changed press times because of the holiday, we weren’t able to print any in today’s paper. You’ll find them online in a special photo gallery at www.thenownews.com.

Only immigrants with job offers should be allowed in StatsCan says we will have 10 million more people in 2036 and 10 million senior citizens. Immigration that is “the highest in the developed world” hasn’t affected the age of Canadians and will not, as a CD Howe Institute study has rightly pointed out. The fact that everyone should realize is that with immigration that is bringing in one million more people every four years, many of those seniors will be at retirement age themselves and, although many bring children, they also have been bringing many

senior family members that will be even more elderly. I don’t want another 10 million in our already rapidly growing cities. Immigration should be used only to fill the positions we can’t fill, and a job offer should be a requirement to come here to wherever that job is. We should be following the new European and U.K. models that require a job offer before coming as a skilled immigrant. That way we don’t have to keep adding to the extreme population growth, urban sprawl and change that has been heaped onto the cities of Vancouver and Toronto unnecessarily. ‘Not a good sign’ Why am I not surprised that Commons Speaker Peter Milliken will not be running again for re-election? Call me cynical, but I suggest that Prime Minister Stephen Harper has put pressure on him because of his decision when he ruled that the federal government breached parliamentary privilege when refusing to produce uncensored documents in the treatment of Afghan detainees. This appears to be a standard with the prime minister: get officials or employees to resign, or fire those that go against his agenda. Not a good sign for our democracy. Rita Pollock Coquitlam

Re: “City looks at suing TransLink,” Friday, June 25. What does the City of Port Moody hope to achieve in taking back the Murray-Clarke Connector from TransLink? Without widespread public outrage behind it, the city’s legal challenge to TransLink and the province over broken promises to build the Murray-Clarke Connector will likely go nowhere. And council’s idea to assume TransLink’s responsibility for this stretch of road appears counterproductive and will place an unnecessary added tax burden on the citizens of Port Moody. The city’s moves regarding the Murray-Clarke Connector, announced in a press release from City Hall last week, may be good political theatre. But they still fall short of practical responses to the numerous broken Murray-Clarke Connector promises. The Murray-Clarke Connector and the Evergreen Line are vital elements of an enhanced and integrated transportation infrastructure to support current and projected growth planned for the Tri-Cities. For Port Moody, specifically, we are told the Evergreen Line itself is going ahead, but with no stop for west Port Moody residents. With no Murray-Clarke Connector, there is now no fore-

seeable relief seen for the daily bottleneck of traffic in Moody Centre created by the 18,000plus vehicles per day that drive through Port Moody to and from the Barnet Highway. These shortsighted transportation decisions are especially unfortunate and damaging to Port Moody and the residents of Moody Centre. Both projects are vital for effective and improved transportation in the Tri-Cities and should be built together. It will be much more cost effective and logical to build the MurrayClarke Connector and To The a western Evergreen Line station now using the same alignment as the Evergreen Line. Design, dig and build once instead of twice, to reduce the construction inconvenience and to lessen community, commercial and environmental impacts. At a meeting just last week, TransLink officials explained that building the Murray-Clarke Connector is still possible at this stage if it is made a political priority for the region. Yes — many promises have been broken. Port Moody and its citizens have good reason to take the province and TransLink to task over these broken promises. What’s needed is a solution to break the log jam of inaction. TransLink’s mayors’ council can initiate proposals to TransLink for

The ancient Chinese technique of acupuncture has been successful in China for over 2,000 years. Jane Wong has over 34 years experience as an acupuncturist. Two of Jane’s patients attest to the effectiveness of acupuncture. 74-year old Edna has been smoking for 61 years. “I’ve been smoking since I was 13 years old, often two packs a day. After just three acupuncture treatments I’ve quit.” P. Chew, 88 years old was having Sciatica. He could walk, stand up, and sleep alright, but could not sit, if he did - the unbearable pain would almost paralyze him. He was given pain drugs, but after taking them a few times he decided to stop and 34 Years Experience came to me. Now, he is free from the problem and lives happily.

With your Community Brought to you by these Tri-Cities Businesses

It’s Christmas in July! Your generosity last Christmas 2009 was extraordinary. Your food donations have stretched right through June even though the number of people coming to the Food Bank has been so much higher than ever before in our history. Each week we distribute a minimum of 400 hampers. And, since households can collect a food hamper once every two weeks, this means the Food Bank is providing food relief to between 800 and 900 households every two weeks.

Pink tag Blow Out !!!! One day only Sunday July 4th

Last year 8,145 people received food relief from the Food Bank. 3,600 recipients were children under 18 years old,1,116 were children under six. Christmas in July re-fills the Food Bank. We count on this campaign to restock the shelves so that we can help families and neighbours in our community. Please help us again this year; it is a great way to kick-start your summer.

All Pink Tags $1.00

It’s easy! • Ask people coming to your picnic, family reunion and birthday parties to bring a can of food. • Set up a Food Drive competition where you work and compete with other departments for the most food raised • Each time you grocery shop, buy a tin of something nutritious and place it in the Food Bank bin.

Shop early & take advantage of the exceptional savings throughout the store. Proudly part of your community since 1972 2404 St John’s St. Port Moody, 604-931-5510 Store hours: Mon - Sat 9:30a.m - 4:30 p.m. Sundays 12:00 - 4:00 p.m.

ON THE AIR: Colin Carr, left, Grant Jepson, Chris Carr (deputy emergency radio co-ordinator) and Stephanie Gaube (incident commander) take notes from responding radio transmissions during the annual EPCom (Emergency Preparedness Communications) field day at Castle Park in PoCo. Amateur radio buffs made contact with other operators Saturday as part of the American Radio Relay League Field Day. The exercise allows ham radio operators to practise communications skills as they would during a major emergency such as a natural disaster.

The Port Moody Commemorative Society has organized navy vessel tours and musical performances to bring the history of the Canadian Navy to life today (Friday) and Saturday at the Golden Spike Days Festival. To mark the navy’s 100th anniversary, the society has brought out the HMCS Nanaimo 702, and the Patrol Craft Training Caribou will dock at Pacific Coast Terminals to illustrate an integral part of Pacific Canada’s fleet and maritime coastal defence program. The vessels aren’t just for show, either. Festival patrons can take a shuttle from Golden Spike Days grounds to the ships for free tours. The society has also booked the Naden Band of Maritime Forces Pacific Headquarters in Esquimalt to perform Friday, July 2 at 6 p.m. during Golden Spike Days. Tours of the HCMS Nanaimo will be held Saturday, July 3 from 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. While both events are free, the society accepts donations. • For the full-length version of this story, visit www.thenownews.com. Fera, on the other hand, consists of twin sisters Courtney and Stephanie Fera and leans on alt-country rock. The event aims to meld music, food and fresh air. Tickets for the performance alone cost $38, while the price of dinner, a “country cookin’ mixed grill,” and the concert is $53. Call Evergreen’s box office at 604-927-6555 for tickets.

Australian wines easygoing, but definitely not average delivers full extracted flavours that deliver a long finish. This is the type of wine that experienced and inexperienced drinkers would equally enjoy. Match this wine to an aged white cheddar or applewood

smoked cheese. We ended up sampling the higher-priced Church Block, Cabernet Sauvignon/Shiraz, Merlot 2008. It featured outstanding fragrances of black and red fruits, followed by

fresh tobacco, cedar with a hint of spice and smoke on the finish. On the palate, it featured tightly grained tannins and highly extracted ripe fruit and a toasty, roasted coffee finale. It was aged in 10-

per-cent new oak barrels. We wound up the tasting and Rouse thanked me for my time. I replied in my best Aussie accent, “The pleasure is all mine mate. Drop around any time!”

O

ne of the things that I like about Australians is the laid-back manner in which they seem to conduct their lives. They are no different when it comes to winemaking, but don’t confuse laid-back with average wines. Wirra Wirra Winery from Australia’s McLaren Vale combines fun and an easy lifestyle as its mantra. Founded in 1894, the winery fell into disrepair between 1936 and 1969. However, an entrepreneurial chicken farmer, Richard Trott, came across the ruined building and began the long and arduous task of bringing the winery back to life. Wirra Wirra translates roughly from the Aboriginal language as “among the gum trees.” The centrepiece of the winery is a three-quarter-ton church bell that was salvaged from a wrecker’s yard. The biodynamic winery is fairly small by Australian standards, but the wines it produces are outstanding. Assistant winemaker James Rouse visited the tasting lounge a few weeks ago to update me on their newest releases. The summer is an ideal time to visit the Lower Mainland, as it is the dead of winter in Australia. Rouse had an accent, but I detected a bit of a Canadian twist. He had previously lived in Vancouver near Kits Beach, and told me he enjoyed the West Coast lifestyle. Rouse poured out a sample of Scrubby Rise, Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon/Viognier 2009. This blend is quite unusual, as it adds Viognier to the classic blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon. It has a fairly high alcohol level of 15 per cent, but that only added to the rich mouth feel of this wine. I detected aromas of lemongrass, peach, pear, apricot and a touch of grapefruit on the nose. Well-balanced acidity and a long finish with a splash of spice added to the overall quality of this white. You could enjoy this wine on its own, but I would match it with a halibut steak or any scallop or shrimp dish. Next up was the Scrubby Rise, Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon/Petit Verdot 2008. It’s a classic blend of Aussie style Shiraz/Cab with a small amount of Petit Verdot blended in to add richness and colour to the mix. This dense purple ruby-red wine exhibited an intense nose of red cherry and raspberry. Add to this a layer of clove and cinnamon and this fresh wine

Port Coquitlam residents Tracy Townsend and Leanne Ball, pictured with the 2002 national ringette team, have been inducted into the Ringette Canada’s Hall of Fame.

Hall calls for former PoCo ringette players Dan Olson dolson@thenownews.com

I

t’s not often that people under the age of 40 are inducted into hall of fames. For Tracy Townsend and Leanne Ball, being part of the induction class of 2010 is a rare and special honour. And a bit of a surprise, too. The two former PoCo ringette stars were recognized earlier this month when Ringette Canada honoured the 1996 and 2002 Canadian teams that were world champions. Townsend, who rose up the ringette ladder and played it to the elite international level, was known as Tracy Crowe back then. A national-calibre player, she played — and continues to play, this time as a coach — a major role in B.C., joining the mostly Alberta and Ontario juggernauts in the medal hunt. “Ringette has helped so many people grow up,” she said of the sport. “I am confident, ambitious, determined, work well with all sorts of characters, can deal with adversity and I could go on forever.” She says much of the credit for her and many of her team-

mates’ development as players and people belongs to her father, Greg Crowe. She was a late pick-up for Team Alberta that went on to defeat Finland in the final in 1996. A goaltender, Ball went through a year-long gruelling tryout process to make the 2002 squad, which again edged archrival Finland for the world title. Both have fond memories of the teams. “When you travel for a month with a group of people that are so individually unique and skilled, the memories come fast and furious,” recalled Townsend, who now lives in Langley. “We were very close, our saying was ‘heart-pace-power.’ We were probably the funniest people for miles. I remember laughing a lot.” Canada needed overtime to defeat the Finns that time around. The foundation of the club came from Alberta, which had won the nationals the previous year. Prior to 2002, the national program had incorporated a true national team process, with numerous tryouts across the country. Ball said that exercise, which involved a lot of travelling and training before ending up in Edmonton with a 3-1 triumph, was the most memorable part for her.

“It’s way up there as an accomplishment,” she recalled. “It was more than the championship, but the whole process that stands out, just getting there. We had players from all over, the coaching staff and training staff were just amazing.” She didn’t play in the final, but was a standout in an earlier victory over Sweden. “Once you get to the world championships the competition is just Finland, the other teams weren’t that strong,” she said. “That final was a pretty cautious, real tight game.” Ball, who joined Townsend for a season playing professionally in Finland, and Townsend both still remain passionate about the game — which was invented by a Canadian in 1963. Townsend recently took over the head coaching duties of the Fraser Valley Avalanche of the National Ringette League. “This is my greatest achievement,” Townsend noted. “I am a world champion — in the sports world that title is a big deal. What makes being on the (1996) team special to me is the fact that they were already a great team, they had won the right to be called Team Canada. They were not required to add anyone to their roster, but they chose me to be on their team, out of every ringette player in Canada they called me. That is very special and I would have walked barefoot across broken glass to be with them, too.”

Although just 2-1 after the first, Coquitlam broke it open in the second frame, outscoring Burnaby 5-1 in the middle stanza and 2-1 again in the third. The Saints, meanwhile, collected their first win since May 22 in last Friday’s 12-8 triumph

over the Langley Thunder. Darcy Cummings, Richard Lachlan and Chris Jones netted two goals apiece, while Trevor Evans, Jesse Rougeau, Brock Whiteley and Scott Jones provided singles. PoCo netminder Carson Michaud turned away 32 of the 40 shots he faced. The win moved PoCo to 3-13-2, good for a four-point cushion over the last-place Thunder. Carl Edward

Local - Nights Highway - BC & AB

Carl was born March 29, 1918 in Stoney Plain, Alberta and moved to Maple Ridge, BC in the 30’s where he met his future wife Cicely. Carl was predeceased by Cicely in 2007 after 61 years of marriage. He is survived by his loving sons Kerry (Charlene) and Gerald (Linda) and his four grandchildren Kyle, Michael, Kaylene, and Andrew. He is also survived by his sister Florence, her family and many other nieces and nephews. Carl worked at the Royal Columbian Hospital from 1951 until his retirement in 1983. During that time and into his retirement he enjoyed camping with his family and rescuing finds from wherever he travelled. Carl never looked his age and astounded his family with his ability to weather many storms. Unfortunately he could not weather this last one and he passed away peacefully June 16, 2010 surrounded by his family at the Royal Columbian Hospital. In lieu of flowers please make a donation in his memory to the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation.

Though his favourite saying was 'Don’t worry, they make new ones everyday' there will not be another new one like dad. Of course this sentiment would elicit a 'bull----'.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: The accent continues on rest, hibernation, nutrition, children, Mother Nature, gardening, property and residence, and on ending some matters and relationships, and nurturing others, especially Sunday/Monday and Saturday. Chuck the unworkable or stale. We all start projects and relationships that don’t work. Your energy’s good Sunday/Monday. Chase money, earnings, buy/sell Monday eve to Wednesday. Avoid illusion. Casual friends, siblings, trips, communications go splendidly Thursday/Friday – but question yourself if you start feeling sweet romantic vibes. Saturday: one goes, another comes.

July 4 - 10

Cancer June 21-July 22: Your energy, charisma and effectiveness ride high! Pursue career, prestige or business objectives Sunday/Monday. Monday night through Wednesday, happiness, optimism, popularity, social delights and flirtations visit! You might meet a “destined friend” this week or next, who could become a mate. Avoid illusion wafted by a suave, slinky or glamorous person Thursday/Friday – a talkative, nervous, or “precise” type is true blue, honest and helpful. A significant sexual or financial decision might be involved. Saturday has an early problem, then success, energy and great money/career ideas!

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Be ambitious – work with a new project, idea or impulse, rather than anything that emerged over the last two weeks. (A project or goal that existed before August last year is also viable – a major interruption has hindered this goal. This obstacle is slowly ending, though it might linger to March 2011.) Talk about a career goal: a Gemini, an Aries understand. This week’s exciting, sexual, whispers of love – but remain cautious about new romances, relationships, as “marriage” is not part (or a good part) of any new link. Invest Tuesday. Bright friend, bright love Friday!

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Relationships remain most important. Some are approaching the end of a phase, particularly those involving large money or intimacy – there will be a new phase soon. It’s like the dip in a wave. During this dip the best you’ll get is deception. So let those two matters (sex, money) take a breather – next Monday (July 12) onward, they’ll surge again, luckily! Sunday/Monday emphasize home, family, endings, peace. Monday night through Wednesday triggers romance, beauty, pleasure, creative urges. Tackle chores Thursday/Friday – success very likely. Lie low Saturday morning; seek others this p.m.

Taurus April 20-May 20: Soon – next week – you’re going to enjoy some really solid advance in love, with creative or pleasure projects, and with relationships generally. So in these specific areas, be content to maintain a holding pattern this week. In a broader view, communication, travel and friendly relationships progress in a good way this week – in fact, in one case, this might be your last chance for a while to contact someone. Do so. Lie low, rest Sunday/Monday. Your energy and charisma surge nicely Monday night through Wednesday. Chase money, or study an inventive investment, Thursday/Friday.

Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Continue to lie low, observe, plan, replenish your energy reserves. Deal with government agencies, charities, institutions and your own head office. Sunday/Monday bring a mellow, understanding mood. Be ambitious Monday night to Wednesday — the only thing you have to avoid is a smattering of illusion or wishful thinking Wednesday p.m. (Anxiety and wishing are two sides of the same urge.) The same advice holds, more so, Thursday, when you might dream unrealistically about someone, and they about you. Otherwise, Thursday/Friday are happy, upbeat! Retreat Saturday, especially this morning.

Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: This week contains opposition and opportunity. Sunday/Monday are for chores, drudgery – get it over with. Exciting meetings arrive Monday night to Wednesday: be diplomatic, eager, refuse to fight. Illusion (or anxiety) about the firmness of the ground you stand on is your only Achilles heel mid-week, especially Wednesday and Thursday. If you’re realistic about this, you can land a deal, grab an opportunity, even trip the love fantastic! Thursday/Friday steer you into depths (finances, sex, health, etc.): a Gemini or Virgo proves a great “guide” here. Saturday, wait for p.m. happiness.

Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Work, health and drudgery – these come every July, Aquarius, so just plug away. Sunday/Monday feature details, paperwork, errands, travel, communications and friendly meetings. Take a rest, or tackle home-based chores Tuesday/Wednesday. Tuesday’s ideas or urges involving investments, debt reduction, intimacy or lifestyle changes are quite workable. Romance beckons Thursday/Friday – so do pleasure, beauty, creative and gambling urges. But in these, deception lurks Thursday (you could be the deceiver) – Friday, clarity and a talkative person bring brightness! Caution Saturday morn.

Gemini May 21-June 20: Chase money, buy/sell, increase your earnings, seek a pay raise, etc. One money project – and one relationship – is winding down. (Not a big deal.) An atmosphere of friction continues in the home. If you live alone, watch your telephone voice at home. Continue to study good and workable plans/ wishes involving real estate, construction, gardening, or similar matters. Next week through early August luck enters, perhaps bringing the opportunity to step toward those goals. However, DON’T move into a new home, nor buy a family home, before July 30: you would experience much friction there.

Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Your popularity remains high – but you might almost defeat it by frowning, being attracted to the secretive, the sexual over the friendly. Best approach: dig deeply and definitely into a financial step, a lifestyle-changing project, or a bid for intimacy; but step out of this, quickly and firmly, to greet your friends, make friends, enjoy entertainment, etc. For three weeks, keep these two good, lucky sides of your life separate. Pursue the “deep” side Sunday/Monday, Tuesday night, and Saturday p.m. Sweet wisdom, gentle love Tuesday/Wednesday. Be ambitious, social, Thursday/Friday.

Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Sunday/Monday are romantic – but friction or ambition might make the dream better than the reality. Still, enjoy yourself. Tackle chores Monday night to Wednesday. It’s a good time to look for work if you’re unemployed. Exciting meetings and partnership opportunities could arise Thursday/Friday. A showy but elusive person could steer you wrong, while a precise or talkative individual will befriend you. Be careful Saturday morning: everything’s at the wrong angle. This p.m., the main trend of this week succeeds: mystery, finances, investigation, intimacy, commitment – make one!

Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Love, romance, beauty, pleasure, vacation, charming kids, creative and gambling urges all flow through you now! Married or single, you’re dealing with someone June/July (hopefully your mate!) who’s feisty, determined, who exudes sexual energy. This link will move from talkative to affectionate, nervous to sweet, soon. In business, a money-earning partnership is possible. In any case, be diplomatic but seductive. Illusion haunts your work sphere, so buy no machinery, and no employment “promises.” Chase money Sunday/ Monday. Home, rest, Thursday/Friday. Everything in the first sentence July 10! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
