Voters want less smoking, no change to off-leash hours jkurucz@thenownews.com

STORM DAMAGE: Crews remove the remains of a tree that fell on Glen Drive between Lansdowne and Johnson streets in Coquitlam Wednesday, as a windstorm swept across Metro Vancouver. City spokesperson Gary Manson said nobody was injured when the tree fell, but it will take “several days” to clear all the branches and debris off city streets. Power outages were reported across Metro Vancouver, and West Coast Express passengers were temporarily delayed as crews removed a tree that had fallen across the tracks.

Those who put their two cents’ worth in Saturday overwhelmingly favour the Coquitlam’s proposed smoking ban, while also lending their support to the status quo in terms of off-leash dog hours at Mundy Park. Fifty per cent, or 2,750 people, voted to maintain the current off-leash dog regulations, compared to the 32 per cent (1,723) who wanted increased hours and the 18 per cent (1,006) who favoured a decrease in hours. As it stands, dogs are allowed offleash on certain trails within the park between dawn and 10 a.m. The numbers were more one-sided on the issue of smoking on public patios and public spaces where those under the age 16 are permitted. Seventy-two per cent, or 3,744 voters, endorsed the increased ban on smoking, while 28 per cent (1,441 people) voted against the move. The city currently has a bylaw in place banning smoking in all parks. The two non-binding referenda questions posed to voters in Saturday’s byelection will be used to help council formulate policies on the two matters at some point later this year. Eightyseven per cent of voters on Saturday responded to the smoking question, while 92 per cent responded to the Mundy Park issue. But, given that only 5,960 people — or 7.5 per cent of eligible voters — cast ballots on Saturday, council members are hesitant over how to
interpret those numbers. “I hesitate to call 7.5 per cent a big success,” Mayor Richard Stewart said Thursday. “But it’s a 50-per-cent improvement over the last byelection, so in some ways this clearly worked at engaging the public more. And it gave us good data on two important issues in our community.” Coun. Selina Robinson introduced a notice of motion to instigate the smoking ban earlier this year, but later deferred the motion until after the public opinion process had wrapped up and staff had time to study the issue. “I’m pleased but not surprised because this is what I’ve been hearing from people … but it confirms what we already know in that we need to broaden our smoking ban,” she said. Whether either issue translates into formal policy before the month-long summer break also remains in question. Last week, Stewart said that because the smoking issue has been before council already, there is some likelihood council could deliberate on the ban before the break, which runs from July 26 to Sept. 13. Stewart added that he would gauge the effectiveness of the soon-to-be completed fenced off-leash park adjacent to Mundy Park before moving ahead with any decisions. He said, though, that there is room for compromise. “We still have folks that would like some off-leash hours for afternoons and evening,” he said. “I think there is some opportunity to explore that on one trail, perhaps, or one loop. I’d like to see us contemplate that.”
Growth plans still causing Plateau concerns Despite repeated assurances and movement towards a unifying regional agreement, unrest continues to mount among Westwood Plateau residents with respect to the city’s input on the regional growth strategy. Westwood Plateau Community Association secretary Judy Salvador appeared before Coquitlam council Monday to underscore her community’s concerns over the fate of the golf courses on the Westwood Plateau and green spaces across the community. “We understand that limiting urban sprawl and accommodating new population growth will require densification,” she said. “We are not anti-densification NIMBYs. Everyone needs somewhere to live. We are in favour of thoughtful and intelligent densification. Housing developments should not replace parks and golf courses.” Salvador’s comments came in light of the city’s latest submission to Metro Vancouver regarding the regional growth strategy, which included a lengthy
list of provisions and changes. Coquitlam effectively put the ball in Metro Vancouver’s court Monday, indicating that the city will not support the growth strategy until the regional authority provides answers on various legal and land use decision outcomes. The city is also asking for an example of how a hypothetical land use dispute would play out between a member municipality and the regional board. Clearer unified definitions of how plots of land would be characterized are also being asked for, as is a meeting of all councillors across the region. City manager Peter Steblin said that while the city remains in support of the general vision of the regional growth strategy, the city does have some outstanding concerns over the “back end” issues related to the plan: staff duplication, conflict resolutions and administrative procedures. Despite the uncertain status of the plan in general, Steblin said Westwood Plateau residents shouldn’t
feel as though their homes or neighbourhood is in jeopardy for redevelopment. “I think everybody can sleep comfortably at night,” he said. “This council on a number of occasions has been very clear that there are no intentions to change any land use on any of the properties we’re talking about.” Salvador’s concerns, and those of the association, centre around Metro Vancouver’s move to update the Regional Growth Strategy, a document first drafted in 1996 that sets out guidelines for everything from parks and open space to urban centres. In updating the document, officials at the regional level liaise with staffers from all member municipalities to help change those policies. In early February, it was revealed that one of the city’s suggested amendments to the plan included a clause that would change the Westwood Plateau Golf & Country CONTINUED ON PAGE 8, see CHANGE CALLED.

City to spend $850,000 to fix leaking library roof John Kurucz jkurucz@thenownews.com Given the miserable weather on the Lower Mainland this week, the fixes can’t come soon enough. Coquitlam council voted unanimously to approve $850,000 in funds to repair the roof of the Poirier library, a facility that’s been plagued by leaks for the last few years.
“It was leaking quite badly in quite a few areas,” said Rhian Piprell, director of the Coquitlam Public Library. “It would start leaking in one place and then it would turn up in another place, so you were never quite sure where it was going to come through.” The most recent measures come after more than $3-million was spent on renovating the library, though most of that money was spent on
Four hours, 36 tickets Four hours of traffic enforcement yielded three dozen tickets in Port Moody Wednesday. Police issued 36 violation tickets during a twohour check of traffic at Barnet Highway and Ioco Road, and another two-hour check at Ioco and Guildford Way. The ICBC campaign targeting aggressive and distracted drivers yielded 13 intersection violations, and 10 motorists receiving tickets for distracted driving. Two people received speeding tickets, two received violation tickets for not wearing a seatbelt and three vehicle inspections were ordered. Six other violation tickets were issued.
interior renovations. An additional $50,000, however, was spent late last year and early this year to address the leaks, but those fixes didn’t work. “As part of the $3 million project that council approved, it did include some minor work to the roof, and it was mainly the replacing of gutters,” said Lori MacKay, the city’s manager of leisure and parks services, at Monday’s council meeting.
were permanently damaged. A wireless router, however, was ruined early this year and compromised the library’s WiFi system, although the router was covered under warranty. “The city did a number of remedial works but none of it seemed to work,” Piprell said. “They would try one thing, and then try another, but it just wasn’t working.” The money needed for the replacement will be taken out
“The expectation at that time was that the roof should last for a number of years. It was the best advice that was available at the day. Time has proven that there were more substantive roofing issues that are clear now. But we can’t just do minor replacements — a full roof replacement is necessary.” Piprell said that over the course of those remedial works, no equipment or books

of unused funds that had been devoted to the Poirier Sports Complex. Piprell said a timeline will be set for when the repairs will begin once she meets with city facilities staff. “The way I approach things is fix the darn thing, don’t patch it,” Mayor Richard Stewart said Thursday. “We are looking for the repair that will fix it once and for all.”

Beware of counterfeit cash from garage sale patrons
This past Sunday, friendly people stopped by our multi-family yard sale in Port Coquitlam as the sun shone. By mid-afternoon, trying to encourage sales and avoid carrying unsold items back into my home, I was happy to work out a deal when a fellow expressed interest in a shelf unit, pen with case and kayak paddle float. I was surprised when he pulled out a $100 bill. It seemed odd to bring and expect change for such a large bill at To The a yard sale. Still, with the size of his purchase my sense of goodwill prevailed and to make the deal fair, I threw in a paddle leash to total $50, which I could return in change for the $100. At the end of the day, happy with a little extra money to help my stressed finances, I deposited my earnings into the ATM. Again, I felt a twinge of uncertainty with the $100 bill. On Tuesday morning,
my fear was confirmed when the credit union called to say the bill was counterfeit. Not really surprised, I felt annoyed for not heeding my gut feeling when the bill had been proffered. Now this fellow has $50 worth of desired items plus $50 in cash. Lucky him. I lost $100, which will be taken from my account. Unlucky me. I feel compelled to let people know that counterfeit money can show up anywhere. My eagerness to bolster my Editor finances by selling extra stuff, and faith in people, led me to ignore my intuitive better judgment. I was too trusting. Please don’t let this happen to you. By the way, if the fellow who made this purchase reads this letter and would like to amend the harm caused by his wrongdoing, he can send me $50 in care of this newspaper. Our View
City needs to let cooler heads prevail
N
o change. That’s how most people voted on the referendum question concerning off-leash dog hours at Mundy Park that was part of Saturday’s byelection. Granted, the referendum is non-binding, but the response shows that, despite the strong views of some residents on both sides of the issue, most people are pretty happy with what’s going on in the park right now. The issue of off-leash dog hours is one of those things that seems to polarize people into two camps: those who want unlimited access for their canines, and those who never want to see a dog set its paw into the park. Strangely, the only other issue that gets readers as worked up — at least when it comes to writing letters to the editor — is closely related. We’re talking about the issue of dog poop and the delinquent dog owners who fail to clean it up. While we’re always happy to receive letters on any topic, it’s somewhat surprising that the two subjects that seem to make people go completely batty are, in the scheme of things, relatively minor. Speaking of minor, that’s one way of describing the turnout at Saturday’s byelection, which saw just 7.6 per cent of eligible voters cast ballots. Presumably, those people most concerned about the dog issue and the other referendum question — smoking on public patios and other public spaces where people under 16 are allowed — showed up to cast a vote Saturday. The smoking question did yield a clearer response, with 72 per cent of voters favouring an increased ban on smoking, beyond the city’s current measure of prohibiting smoking in parks. That’s not surprising since, according to the Lung Association of B.C., just 16.4 per cent of the province’s residents smoke. Banning smoking where minors may be present makes sense, and the city should go ahead and do it. Banning or limiting off-leash dogs from Mundy Park, however, does not, and the city should take the referendum results as a sign that the status quo is working just fine.

Flies multiplying with green waste I think that the green waste composting program in Port Coquitlam is a good idea. However, too little thought has been given to the issue of flies. We used to tightly bag our garbage and there was never a problem with flies. Now that we can no longer use bags, the flies have multiplied exponentially. Not only are they buzzing about the recycling bin, they are coming into the house in previously unseen numbers. The smell is also much worse. The city needs to come up with an acceptable system to contain the waste in a way that inhibits fly infestations. I am happy to pay for compost-friendly bags, but I understand that they are not allowed in the green waste collection. Many really good ideas fail because of unforeseen consequences. This issue needs to be addressed quickly or citizens will stop using the green waste system for food scraps. Tracey Dobney Port Coquitlam
Density is about more than highrises On May 11, I attended the unveiling of the proposed official community plan for the Austin Heights neighbourhood. I observed that Coquitlam city council and
planners are determined to preserve and continue their policy of a dramatic dichotomy in housing options for citizens. On the one hand, our city is allowing and even encouraging the construction of unprecedented numbers of gigantic houses with 5,000, 6,000 and 7,000 square feet of living area. On the other hand, it is planned that we pile people up, 20 storeys high, in living spaces often less than 1,000 square feet, far above and thus divorced from the sights and smells of the Earth. Looking down the road perhaps 100 years, what will we see? Will all the low-income people be jammed, without gardens and without To The pets, into these great highrises? Will this form of housing be the exact equivalent of the ugly towers the Soviet communists constructed for their citizens? Will the hundreds of enormous houses have become impractical because no one can afford the energy resources they require? City council and planners, how about the golden mean? For our community planners, I wish for the vision that would inspire creative zoning adjustments that would lead to construction of a true city of the future, a city featuring a majority of dwellings with about 2,000 square feet and a garden outside where vegetables or flowers can be grown or chil-
dren can play in the sun (yes, sun — they need the vitamin D). Remember that gardening is one of the most popular leisuretime activities in Coquitlam, and gardening is a recommended form of healthful physical exercise. The characteristics described above can be achieved with duplexes, fourplexes or row houses. Can you envision a treed street of landscaped two-storey houses, three homes on the ground floor of each, with three private gardens stretching out behind and three homes (with balconies) on the upper floor? Maximize the size of the rear gardens by setting these buildings about eight feet back from Editor the sidewalk, place a 10-foot treed space between each of the buildings and you will have an attractive and comfortable streetscape. Lower unit cost and increase garden area by requiring people to park on the street (boats and RVs must go in storage yards elsewhere), provide excellent transit services so fewer cars are needed and this would be a neighbourhood in which people would be glad to live. City planners say that we must have highrises in order to meet the density guidelines set down by Metro Vancouver. This socalled necessity exists only because we devote so much of our space to large and very large single-family houses. It is time to start gradually

modifying single-family zoning to allow duplexes, triplexes or fourplexes. Or perhaps planners will have the creativity to find zoning opportunities to create streetscapes like the one I described in the above paragraph. Jane Shoemaker Coquitlam
What are we getting in return for taxes? So word has it that residents of Coquitlam will be facing a 5.3per-cent property tax increase this year. As a taxpayer, I would like to know exactly what it is we are getting in return for this increase. Our city managed to get exactly nothing from the Olympics. They have managed to not negotiate the Evergreen Line. The city continues to struggle to attract large businesses to the area. We have no city homeless plan, but they managed to shut down a shelter that a good Samaritan was operating for free. Great programs that encourage recycling and a sense of community like the annual spring cleanup have been cancelled, and they allow developers to clear-cut trees at will with little regard for environmental, esthetic or traffic impacts. And how many bureaucrats are earning over $100,000 a year for all this “excellent work?” I think we should be asking them to pay us back for lack of results. Racquel Foran Coquitlam

Residents worry teens will harm park CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4.
Klassen said. “A sign showed up for one or two days here and was taken down … We knocked on some doors, but I’d say three-quarters of the community doesn’t even know this is happening.” For Pamela McElheran, her main concern is the impact the Winslow location could have on nearby Blue Mountain Park. “Blue Mountain Park is a jewel in the crown of Coquitlam. There’s nothing like it in the city of Coquitlam, and there’s nothing like it in many other communities. If you put 1,200 to 1,300 adolescents right next door to Blue Mountain Park, it will never be the same,” said McElheran, who lives across the street from the proposed location. “There are young families that use that every day … It’s used from dawn til dusk. There’s a preschool in it. There’s a kiddie pool, a spray park, a playground. I don’t know about you, but it doesn’t take a lot of imagination to figure out what teenagers do when they’re given green space and forest.” At the end of the evening, Derpak told residents he clearly heard their message. He said a summary of feedback will be posted on the district’s website at www.sd43.bc.ca. The district will continue to accept comments, and final recommendations will be made to the school board on June 15.

Club’s regional designation from conservation/recreation to general urban. Part of council’s decision Monday was to defer any movement on the golf course issue, among many others, until Metro
Vancouver provides answers on the myriad of questions and hypothetical situations council asked of the regional body. That didn’t go far enough for Plateau residents, who are urging the city to rescind any change in designation for the golf course regardless of where talks are
at with Metro Vancouver. “To change this protective designation for our green spaces is a slippery slope,” Salvador said. “From our perspective, if this is changed then every community in the city with green space could face the same thing.”

CALLING IN THE HEAVY ARMOUR: Police remain tight-lipped over why an armoured personnel carrier stopped by the 1000 block of Hoy Street in Coquitlam Thursday morning. Neighbours were told by emergency response team members to stay inside as they cleared a house, which was later searched by plainclothes officers. Const. Jana McGuinness of the Vancouver Police Department, which is in charge of the file, said the search was part of a larger investigation and more information will be released in coming days.

Buntzen Lake boat launch closed due to high water levels
Thinking of a trip to Buntzen Lake this holiday weekend? You might want to reconsider, since the boat launch will be closed and the sand on the beach will be covered with water. The water level at the lake is higher than usual, and will remain high throughout the summer, as BC Hydro shuts down the Buntzen powerhouse to replace a turbine. Buntzen Lake is a working reservoir and, with the powerhouse shut down, water from
the lake cannot be released through the powerhouse and into Indian Arm. BC Hydro must manage the Buntzen reservoir level by releasing water through the Buntzen spillway channel. The channel is at a higher elevation than usual, so the level of the lake reservoir has risen. Buntzen remains open for recreational use, with the lake still available for swimming. The parking lots are open as usual.

Aitken named children’s champion When it comes to early childhood development, they put the “super” into super heroes. The Tri-Cities Early Childhood Development (ECD) Committee has recognized early childhood development’s cream of the crop, during its inaugural TriCities Champions for Young Children Awards held May 6. The group received scores of nominations in three categories — individual champions, group/organization champions and business champions — for those who had contributed to helping young Tri-Cities children learn and grow. Gloria Aitken was named individual champion for her work at Port Coquitlam Happy Times Preschool, her 25 years’ worth of work building rapport with families and their children and her willingness to adapt her program to what is best for the child. “Gloria grew up in a small village in England and truly understands the concept that it ‘takes a community to raise a child,’” Susan Foster, the Tri-Cities ECD community development co-ordinator, said in a release. “She told us that people need to help each other and get to know each other. Gloria believes that we can reduce crime rates and make the community better if we get to know each other, respect each other and help each other.” Deborah Stetz, Coquitlam Centre’s marketing director, was presented with the business champion award of excellence. SUCCESS Multicultural Family Resource Program was named as the group champion for helping to build a strong and supported community for newcomer families.

MARIANNE
Sasha hasn't adjusted well to being abandoned and is very upset. On top of everything she is declawed which may make her feel extra vulnerable. We are letting Sasha take her time and move at her own pace. We believe she will relax and become the friendly cat we were told she was. Sasha will need a patient home that will let her come to terms with yet another environment. Sasha will need to be an indoor only cat.
Marianne is a spunky girl with lots of attitude! She will be sweet and gentle one moment, then let you know she wants her space. Marianne loves to play, especially with fuzzy mice. Marianne would prefer to be the only cat in the home.

GUIDE
Acura MDX holds its own in mid-size market 10 years in David Chao editorial@thenownews.com It’s been 10 years since the MDX debuted, during which time the mid-size SUV has become one of Acura’s best-selling vehicles. When it arrived in 2000, the MDX was the first luxury crossover SUV to offer seven seats, enabling families to move upscale without having to go to a truck-based SUV like the Cadillac Escalade. Of course, being the first has never guaranteed success, and the intelligent MDX didn’t just rely on its third-row bench to generate sales. With decent performance, a solid feature set, pleasant styling and a very good price, it was a complete package and a very interesting vehicle. A decade later, all of that is still true. The original MDX remained a best-in-class vehicle until 2006, when a redesigned 2007 model was released to favourable reviews. For 2010, the MDX gets a number of modifications aimed at keeping it fresh and attractive. The basic infrastructure hasn’t changed, but the various improvements ensure that the MDX remains at the top of its game. Mechanically, the 2010 MDX has a revised 3.7-litre V-6 engine with improved power delivery, along with the brand’s first six-speed automatic transmission. While Acura and Honda’s purposeful avoidance of V-8 engines is wellknown (a decision that has won the respect of many consumers), it’s surprising to realize that the automaker has been stuck on fivespeed automatics until now. In the meantime, others are moving on to seven- and eight-speed automatics — as well as clutchless manual and
Photo submitted
The 2010 Acura MDX offers improved power delivery with a six-speed automatic. continuously variable transmissions — making this the one area in which Acura is far behind the competition. Where features are concerned, the revised model gains a variety of technologies, including an adaptive cruise-control system, autolevelling headlamps and blind-spot detection. Unfortunately, you have to spring for the highend elite package to get these features. While two out of the three are understandable as options, blind-spot detection could be standard
on such a large vehicle. And that brings us to the one thing that the MDX, oddly enough, hasn’t gained: the keyless entry system found in the TL, RL and upcoming ZDX hatchback. While some of these systems are more annoying than helpful, Acura’s is very intelligent, unlocking when a person carrying the key fob merely touches the door handle. It’s not a big deal, but you have to wonder why Acura left keyless entry off of such an important vehicle.
Regardless, the MDX is still one of the vehicles to beat, with a well-designed interior and great price that delivers excellent overall value. And hey, it’s even built in Canada at the assembly plant in Alliston, Ont. The most obvious styling change is the revised front end, which features a new version of the trapezoidal Acura grille. It’s softer and more subtle than the in-your-face grille from recent years, but isn’t exactly attractive. With the exception of the bumpers, the rest of the MDX’s styling remains unchanged and that’s a good thing. In general, the SUV’s strong lines are very pleasing to the eye, giving it a strong profile. There’s lots of space inside, though the third-row seats are as tight as most sevenseaters are. The cargo space is a reasonable size with all of the seats up, and becomes cavernous when the 50-50 third-row and 60-40 secondrow seatbacks are folded flat. Acura makes some of the best seats in the business. They’re very comfortable, balancing between the softer seats found in Infiniti and Lexus vehicles and the firm seats common to European cars.
Thumbs up and down
The MDX gets thumbs up for great interior design, above-average performance and comfortable seats and interior space. Thumbs down are given for better-but-not-great front styling and lack of keyless entry.

T-wolves’ demise gives Merth some options
There’ll be no free agent windfall to take to the bank, but Anmore’s Danny Merth will get a say in where he plays. The forward became a free agent Monday when the B.C. Hockey League board of governors voted to suspend the Williams Lake Timberwolves for the 2010-11 season due to financial reasons. The league also decided to make all the club’s players free agents and not hold a dispersal draft. “I found out when one of the owners, Richard Kohlen, called me Monday to say that it looked like the team would be suspended,” the 19-year-old Merth said. “He said they couldn’t work out a deal to sell the team, the owners couldn’t agree and the league was running out of time.” It means Merth can look for a situation that benefits him and help him attract a possible scholarship. “I’m just going to look for a place where I can play — I’d like to play close to home, if I could.” The Coquitlam Express’ Darcy Rota said the team is looking at Merth, and a couple of other T-wolves, for the upcoming season. “We’re talking about some of the players, it’s something Jon (Calvano, Coquitlam head coach and director of hockey operations) and I are discussing,” Rota, the club’s president and general manager, said. “We talked about (Merth), we like Danny and the Merth family is a great family.” He played for the Express in 2008-09 as an affiliate player. He also cheered on the club when older brother Peter anchored the blueline for two years in Coquitlam and one season in Burnaby. The younger brother said the past year in Williams Lake started well, but money troubles and on-ice struggles began to take a toll at Christmas. “The first half of the season was good, we weren’t expected to do too much, with so many rookies. Around Christmas I guess the owners began having problems, they started to trade our veterans and things kind of fell apart from there.” As a rookie with the last place Twolves, the six-foot-one Merth tallied 10 goals and 18 assists in 49 games. League commissioner John Grisdale said the governors had little choice when it came to freezing the franchise. “The options under our bylaws are quite clear and they were a team that were not in good standing financially.”
Adrian Lam/Victoria Times-Colonist
Coquitlam junior Adanacs’ Dan Lewis, shown above making a save in Victoria, was sharp when called upon in Wednesday’s 7-3 victory over Burnaby at the renovated Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex’s main arena.
Defence gives jr. Adanacs big edge over Lakers Dan Olson sports@thenownews.com For the first 19 minutes, the Burnaby Lakers had the upperhand over the Coquitlam Adanacs. The remaining 41 minutes belonged to the junior Adanacs, as they stopped Burnaby 7-3 in B.C. Junior A Lacrosse League action on Wednesday. In the first junior game at the newly renovated Poirier Sport and Leisure Complex’s main arena, the Adanacs shook off some early rust and erased a 3-1 deficit to knock off the first-place Lakers. Just as in their previous encounter, nearly
three weeks ago in Burnaby, Coquitlam had a few early miscues but recovered to run the table. Holding the 5-2-1 Lakers goalless over the final 41 minutes is a pretty good indication that the defensive system head coach Curt Malawsky has implemented is taking root. It came together despite a 17-day layoff due to the final construction phase at the Poirier arena. “We’re playing a good system that doesn’t give you time and space in certain areas of the floor but we had some early breakdowns that gave them an opening,” Malawsky said of the first period. “It’s evident as the game wore on, you saw we started running and taking over the game.
COQUITLAM METRO-FORD SOCCER TEAM OF THE WEEK
Coquitlam Metro-Ford JR. WOLVES
This past weekend, the Under 21 Metro-Ford Jr. Wolves won the coveted Provincial Cup championship with a narrow, but well-earned 1-0 victory over Victoria’s Bays United. The match, played on Sunday at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria, featured the two top teams in their respective leagues - the Vancouver Island Soccer League and the Vancouver Metro Soccer League. After a rather slow start, the Jr. Wolves took control of the match and dominated most of the second half, due mainly to the superlative performances of midfielder Chris Locke and forward Jovan Blagojevic. The lone goal of the match was scored midway through the second half when Milad Mehrabi converted a fine two-way passing play between Locke and Blagojevic with a clinical finishing touch. It should be mentioned that defenders Roberto Ramogida and Brendan Besuschko - as well as goalkeeper Dillan Fogliato - played extremely well during the entire game and particularly in the first half as they kept the very strong and talented Victoria forwards at bay. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE JR. WOLVES FOR THEIR EXCELLENT PERFORMANCE!!!!

Our guys have been working hard but it’s hard to emulate game experience.” The Lakers looked good early, taking a 3-1 lead with 1:17 left in the first period. But intermediate callup Wes Berg popped home his first of three with just two seconds to play in the frame to steal some momentum heading into the dressing room. Garrett McIntosh beat Burnaby’s Brodie MacDonald with a low shot from the high slot 14:43 into the second to tie the game, followed four minutes later by back-to-back tallies by Berg and Travis Cornwall. The Port Coquitlam Diamondbacks entered late and left later — as champions. The D-backs filled a vacant slot in the PoCo Walter Bird Memorial bantam A baseball tournament and turned it into a 7-6 victory over Aldergrove in the final. Great pitching from Evan Gain set the stage for a big rally in the final. PoCo got consecutive doubles off the bats of Austen Butler, Jacob Helmhold and Christopher Trotzuk in the fifth inning to tie it. Robin Ricketts manufactured the winning run by singling, stealing second and dashing home on an errant throw. Picking up game MVP honours during the weekend were Jacob Taylor, Gain, Helmhold and Ricketts.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
Aries March 21 - April 19: A busy, detail-filled month lies ahead. Your luck has been low, but it soon will climb or reach equilibrium (early June through early September). Sunday/Monday feature relationships and opportunities. These are a tough slog Sunday – you might reach a final separation point or showdown over a domestic, career or similar situation. Don’t expect fireworks, just deep, thoughtful commitment to a path. Monday’s the opposite – everything works when you admit your own fears, failings! Secrets, inheritances, investments, other people’s money fascinate you midweek: but a major problem lurks.
Cancer June 21-July 22: The few weeks ahead bring reduced energy levels, quietude and sweet solitude, spiritual nudges and administrative or governmental contacts. It’s a good time to contemplate and plan your future. When doing that planning, realize that June through August will favour your ambitions, and contacts with bosses and VIPs. Worldwide, this will also be a turbulent time – and in crisis there are opportunities. Your relationship, ambition and security/ domestic zones all face change (or at least, adventure!). Sunday holds either deep affection or deep rejection. Your romantic, creative urges rise midweek.
Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Expect four weeks of internationalism, higher learning, far travel, publishing and legal, cultural events – and love! But an April/May trend of intimacy, financial commitment or research with someone representing one of these zones, will continue. E.g., if you became intimate with someone in April or May, you might now see love dawning, or travel to see them. Or, if you researched, you might now publish, or take it to a court of law. Or an investment/ business partnership you explored might become a signed contract. Your charisma, energy soar Sunday/ Monday. Careful Sunday in career/home.
Taurus April 20-May 20: Tackle chores Sunday/ Monday – that’s better than getting into trouble by siding with one person or the other when they argue (Sunday). Relationships bless you Tuesday, but anger is close to the surface Wednesday. Life’s mysteries, depths and deep nurturing rise to consciousness Thursday/Friday. Your financial and sensual instincts surge – but something you start now might meet a longterm (romantic and financial) barrier. Saturday brings initial stress (around noon) then wisdom and mellow thoughts. The weeks ahead emphasize earnings, purchases, possessions, memory and sensual joys.
Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The weeks ahead bring wish fulfillment, popularity, flirtations, entertainment, optimism and joyful plans! You could start a love affair; it could lead to marriage, or bring travel to a foreign country. Expect success in legal, educational, cultural, love, publishing, far travel and similar zones. But this might be just a taste of success, Leo – don’t force matters, be willing to wait until 2011 if success doesn’t fully gel. Much talk Sunday (watch underground resentments or sneaky people) and Monday (trust someone!) Rest, midweek. Romance, creativity and a winning streak, Thursday/Friday!
Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: You face a month of depths, intimacy, sexual urges, secrets and research, commitment and consequence, and crucial health and lifestyle choices. You should meet success! Someone you’ve dealt with since early to mid-April could play a prominent role. You might find your work duties expanding June through August. Retreat, take a deep rest Sunday/Monday. (Sunday might subtly pull a “mellow relationship” apart.) Your energy and charisma surge Tuesday/Wednesday – ask a favour or start a new project! (Best Tuesday morn.) You can march straight toward more earnings Thursday/Friday – do so!
Gemini May 21-June 20: Your energy, charisma, effectiveness and decisiveness return, big time! Over the weeks ahead, start significant new projects, see and be seen, make an impression on important people! Early June to early September might bring a wish true, especially in areas of marriage, relocation, business partnerships and social acceptance. Even if they don’t, your popularity, optimism and “future sight” will rise – get ready to enjoy life! There will be no more need for caution in relationships. But that’s early June. Meanwhile, Sunday (uncooperatively) and Monday (magically) promote romance, creativity.
Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: A month of ambition, success, prestige relationships and community recognition has just started. But a study, travel, love, cultural or similar theme, evident since early April, continues to June 9. It might involve communications from another country. You’ll be half ambitious, half thoughtful. You’ve met lucky opportunity in 2010 – for business, marriage, relocation, perhaps litigation. June-July-August will move these opportunities to deeper waters (commitment, intimacy, funding, etc.) If you “miss,” opportunity will return, September-December, and commitment will return, early 2011.
Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Your hopes rise Sunday (though money is a disappointing topic) and Monday. Optimism, popularity, flirtation and fun visit you! Or perhaps you’d better go out and find them, since you’ve entered a month in which others hold the aces of charisma, energy and clout. Still, fresh horizons, opportunities and exciting relationships are imminent! The more you approach, the more you’ll gain. An AprilMay task lingers into late June, so tackle it. (You might also be romancing a workmate during this time.) Lie low midweek. Emerge Thursday/Friday to greet the world! Romance – soon.
May 23 - 29 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: The month ahead accents work and health, machinery and service personnel, the heavy side of kids (e.g., dirty diapers rather than the joy of her first soccer goal). Look upward Sunday/Monday – to ambition, prestige. An attractive, affectionate person stands across from you Sunday – but are you too secretive, defensive? If so, rethink. You’ve been intrigued by a romantic or creative possibility April and May – this continues through June. Don’t abandon it.Your hopes rise nicely mid-week, but retreat for some solitude Thursday/ Friday. Real estate luck hovers on the near horizon. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: The weeks ahead feature pleasure, beauty, romance, joy with children, creative surges, and a winning streak in speculation. A Gemini or Virgo could be involved – perhaps a person you might have tried to end it with in April/May. Love, understanding, your life philosophy, far travel, legal or educational matters are the theme Sunday/Monday. Sunday might bring a “silent disagreement” over duties. Be ambitious Tuesday/Wednesday, but avoid friction with a competitor. Your hopes rise Thursday/ Friday, as popularity, light romance and entertainment arrive. Retreat Saturday, seek quiet rest. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: The weeks ahead accent your domestic scene, security, real estate, Mother Nature, gardening, nutrition. It’s a time to digest what you’ve done, where you’ve travelled over the past year (and years) and where you’re going. This might lead you to abandon certain bonds and projects, and to embrace new ones. That’s good, natural. Sunday presents you with a subtle, perhaps hardly conscious dilemma, a choice between different friends or viewpoints. Secrets, deep power, intimacy might be involved. Midweek’s mellow, brings understanding. Be ambitious Thursday/ Friday: success awaits! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
