Rustlers target local goats, but one kid saves the day after seeing Craigslist ad

everal Vancouver advocacy groups are calling for authorities to drop pimping charges against a teen prostitute accused of recruiting other girls into the sex trade. The Vancouver Rape Relief and Women’s Shelter, along with Justice for Girls, say the 14-year-old girl should not have been charged. Both organizations say that teenage prostitution cases almost always involve an adult who has recruited young women into selling sex. “I thought it was shocking that they would consider charging her,” said Vancouver Rape Relief spokesperson Daisy Kler. “Most likely this is a situation where there is an adult involved.” Justice for Girls advocate Annabel Webb expressed the same view in a press release issued Friday. “By charging this young woman as a pimp, the police are violating a well-established consensus in Canada and internationally that teen girls in prostitution are victims of child sexual abuse and therefore should not be treated as criminals.” Webb said exploited teen girls have been known to recruit other girls, and that they may not expose the men who control them because of fear. “Part of the abuse of prostitution is that girls are turned against each other in the service of male sexual violence and exploitation,” she said. “We know that when teen girls are recruiting other girls, there is always a backdrop of other sexual See TEEN, Page 5

yla Elgersma has all but one of her goats back, but police are still looking for thieves who have stolen more than 40 goats in recent months. Last Wednesday, thieves cut a fence at the Fairfield Island property where Elgersma kept nine goats and made off with seven of the animals. Two were left behind, one because it was very pregnant, the other because it was a Billy Goat that would have likely been too much trouble for the thieves. The goats were purebred and cost upwards of $500 each. The Elgersmas kept them for their milk and, because of their docile nature, as a hobby and were like members of the family. But last Wednesday after dark, they were stolen, the latest in a series of goat thefts that police and the Elgersmas say may be related to a surge in the consumption of goat meat, which is popular both for its low cholesterol and as a meal at certain Muslim holidays. In September, thieves stole 18 goats—two at a time—over two weeks from a Keith Wilson road goat farm owned by Sue Barker. The thieves followed that up by targeting a neighbour’s goat herder four separate times. Each time the thieves would take the goats, the goat owners took additional measures to protect their animals. By the fourth robbery, the thieves were breaking into a padlocked barn where the goats were being housed. Last week, theves set their eyes on the Elgersmas’ goats. The goats were expensive, but they were also family. “It’s heartbreaking,” said Elgersma when the Times reached her Friday. “They’ve come from our own stock. We’ve helped them be born and raised them and we have five children of our own so these are our family pets.” Elgersma choked back tears when asked of her reaction when she found the goats gone.

It’s been credited with launching entertainment careers, breaking news, and helping spark revolutions. And now British Columbia public servants will be able to use Twitter to do their jobs. (For the uninitiated, Twitter is commonly referred to as “microblogging” because it allows users to broadcast their thoughts and opinions, albeit with a maximum of 140 characters. As a reference point, the opening sentence of this story has 141 characters.) Chilliwack, though, might as well be designated a Tweet-free zone.

Twitter might be all the rage, but here in the ‘Wack the list of users is as short as the characters allowed Sure the Times has a Twitter account (@ChilliwackTimes), as does this reporter (@tylerolsennow) (who conducted all interviews for this article using the service). Chilliwack’s mayor is also on Twitter (@ sharongaetz) as are several local businesses. But as far as the 70,000plus citizenry of Chilliwack goes, the number of local residents who use Twitter for non-job-related reasons is vanishingly small. No more than 100 residents—and probably a lot fewer—use the service on a regular basis. Jeremy Cockrill has created a list of 159 local users, but many haven’t tweeted in months. One of those who has is Jamie Bill-

ingham (@jamiebillingham), who replied to a Times Twitter query by writing: “It [is] definitely underused and misused in Chilliwack – IMO.” (IMO is text short-hand for “in my opinion”). Reena Kudhail (@Reena_K) echoed that idea: “Underused by local biz (not chain, strictly local); seems some feel FB is enough. Does seem to be catching on, though slowly. Typical Chwk!” Billingham put some of the responsibility for its lack of use on those city leaders who are supposed to be leading discussions. She noted that she was the only person to use Twitter to promote last week’s Healthy Communities session.

Indeed, local politicians have largely ignored the medium. Gaetz tweets regularly—before last month’s cabinet shuffle she wrote “Oh please keep Barry Penner as Minister of Environment – w/o him we could be breathing Metro’s garbage!” But the Times was unable to find any other local councillor who uses it. MP Chuck Strahl (@ChuckStrahl) hasn’t tweeted since June. MLA John Les (@J_Les) was a regular Twitter user in the spring of 2009. Kiannah Elgersma feeds Georgia, a pregnant goat left behind by thieves who stole seven other animals last week. GOATS, from page 1 “Devastated.” By Friday—two days after the goats disappeared—Elgersma believed her animals had already been slaughtered. Despite that, she posted a notice on Craigslist offering a $500 reward for the goats’ return. And that night, Elgersma’s pleas were answered. A young boy in Langley had been on Craigslist and had come across the Elgersma’s notice, which features photos of the goats. Those goats looked a lot like some of the six animals just bought by his grandfather for $750 earlier that week. “His grandson is a bit of a hero in this for us,” Elgersma said. “He said, Grandpa, I think those goats belong to somebody else. I think that put [the grandfather] in a tough spot because now he’s accountable to his grandson.” The man contacted the Elgersmas, but said that he wanted his money back and wasn’t willing to give an address or even a name. He also asked them not to contact the police, saying that he was afraid of the man from whom he’d bought the goats. The Elgersmas immediately contacted the RCMP, who immediately sprung into action. A meeting between the Elgersmas and the man was arranged for 10 p.m. Saturday morning at Fraser Valley Auctions. Unbeknownst to the man, plainsclothes officers would be watching. The Elgersmas waited, but the man didn’t show. Meanwhile, another set of officers tracked the man at his property—which police had identified using the man’s phone number. After three hours, the man was about to leave. But when he

The man admitted that he had the goats and the Elgersmas arrived at the farm, identified Danny, Honey, Spring, Tulip, Sierra and Daisy, and took them home. “We were thrilled. Oh my goodness. I was in total shock. They looked awful though. One of them was limping pretty badly and all of them were hunched over, like they hadn’t been eating property. They’re just traumatized,” said Elgersma. “We fully expected that they had gone for meat and that was the end of it so we’re pretty thrilled.” So was the young boy. “His grandson was just beaming when we arrived,” she said. The farmer said that the goats were not destined for the slaughterhouse. Elgersma speculates that the thieves liked the goat that remains missing—Tanya, an alpine goat with red on her hind quarters and on her spine—and decided to take the bunch. Police are continuing to investigate and no arrests have been made yet. The Elgersmas are planning to do something for a reward once police close the case. His grandson, though, is in line for a reward. Sue Barker, one of the goat farmers who has lost animals, has promised to give the boy a doe. Barker is also urging farmers to take safeguards to protect their goats and to immediately report any missing animals to the RCMP.

Chill just adds to the strain of the season

his season’s first cold weather snap hasn’t yet put a strain on shelter beds but resources to deal with the less fortunate are stretched. The Salvation Army has 11 beds funded in part by the province’s Emergency Shelter Program and over the weekend mats went down to provide extra spaces for those in need. But despite sub-zero temperatures, there were only three extra guests, according to Ian Pratt, community ministries director for the Salvation Army. “We haven’t turned any people

away yet, but as the weather gets colder we just don’t know what is going to happen,” Pratt said. Over at Ruth & Naomi’s no one has been turned away either, despite the fact the mission is in a temporary structure waiting for final permits from the provincial government so they can build their new 8,000square-foot facility. “We are just waiting for the building compliance certificate,” said Ruth & Naomi’s board chair Wayne Massey. “That is all down on Barry Penner’s old desk [Ministry of Environment] and we can’t start until we get that.” Director Ted Stoker said they have 15 mats down in the trailer in the

meantime and they have been full every night since the cold weather started. “By the time I put all 15 mats out there I’m full,” he said. “We haven’t had to turn anyone away yet but where they all are, I don’t know.” Over at the Salvation Army, Pratt said there has been a 30 per cent increase in demand for services and a 30 per cent decline in donations. “We’ve seen all of our services really take a hit this year,” Pratt said. “Donations are down and the need is up.” Pratt said they are looking for kettle volunteers and the Salvation Army would like to challenge the business community to get involved. Specifi-

cally, Pratt is hoping a local dealership could donate or loan a vehicle so they can get out and about in the community more. For those looking to donate, money is always best because deals given to the Salvation Army by grocery stores mean they can stretch the dollars further. But for food donations they are always looking for items such as tinned tuna, macaroni dinners and lunch meals. More weather coming As of Monday, the forecast for the Fraser Valley was for cold weather, although not as cold as the rest of the Lower Mainland. The forecast for Tuesday was for

sunny skies with a high of -7 C and a low of -11 C. The temperature should increase slightly as the week progresses, but with precipitation called for Thursday and a low of -6 C, snow accumulation is possible. Because removing snow from sidewalks can be difficult for some residents, the Chilliwack & District Seniors’ Resources Society and the city are looking for “snow angel” volunteers to help seniors and the disabled. hose fighting a planned gravel mine in the Chilliwack River Valley will present an alternate aggregate supply plan to NDP environment critic Rob Fleming at a Dec. 1 meeting in Yarrow. The Friends of the Chiliwack River Valley have also planned a “direct action day” on Dec. 3, but details were not made available. “That one we are keeping under our hat,” said Glen Thompson, spokesman for the organization. “Some of the people organizing it want the cloak of secrecy to figure out all the logistics.” All he would say is that the direct action would take place somewhere in the Lower Mainland. Thompson has been at the forefront of opposition to Southview Sorting owner Brent Tolmie’s gravel pit near Larson’s Bench in the river valley, which was recently given provincial government approval. This was done despite the fact the location sits in an area that would be designated “red” in the Aggregate TEEN, from page 1 abuse, male violence and coercion.” Both groups want police to focus their investigation on those adult men who purchase sex, and those who may have sent the 14year-old girl to recruit other teens. “They’re children. There’s absolutely no consent,” said Kler. Trisha Baptie, spokesperson for Exploited Vo i c e s n ow E d u c a t i n g , echoed that view: “We need to undo the blame on this young girl. She should not be the focus of the criminal

Mines Minister Randy Hawes took part in various meetings regarding the APP in October, including one in Chilliwack on Oct. 14. Thompson says there are many flaws in the APP and his group will present an alternate plan to Fleming on Dec. 1. In a press release issued Monday, Thompson called on all levels of government to boycott “conflict gravel” operations in B.C. “According to the Minister of State Randy Hawes, 70 per cent of the gravel produced in B.C. is purchased by governments,” the release said. “We’re asking that these elected officials stop the purchase of gravel from pits located in communities where local residents are opposed to these operations. We’re asking that elected officials listen to their constituents and vote with their dollars.” The meeting with Fleming is scheduled for Dec. 1 at the Yarrow Community Hall at 7 p.m.

ust seven months into its existence, a new aboriginal healing wellness village in the Chilliwack River Valley is experiencing financial difficulties and is hoping to garner community support. Stehiyaq Healing and Wellness Village was many years in the making and in April of this year finally became a reality.

The grand opening ceremony held at the village situated on a traditional First Nations village site in the valley marked the beginning of operations. Staff were hired and trained to work with youth. On July 6, the centre took in its first clients, according to Stehiyaq program director Breanna Miller. “The first intake in the summer was very successful,” Miller said. “The staff, facility, and the programming worked out really well.

The youth in the first intake stayed until the end of August, and early September we started our first year-long intake. At this time we have five girls living on-site, with another two coming in within the next few weeks. We receive calls daily from people interested in securing a placement for a youth they work with or is in their care.” However, because Stehiyaq is run by a non-profit, charitable society they do not have a stable source of

funding and without contracts and clients, money is tight. The centre currently has contracts with the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD) in the Fraser Region, Vancouver Aboriginal Child and Family Service Society (VACFSS), and more recently with with Kw’umut Lelum Child and Family Services. “Until we can finalize contracts for all of our beds, it is very tight financially,” Miller said. “We have

recognized that we cannot rely solely on our contracted agencies to stay operational.” On Nov. 24 from 6 to 9 p.m. a fundraiser for Stehiyaq is planned at the Chilliwack Cultural Centre. The event will feature a presentation from the Stehiyaq program, local First Nations performances (both traditional and contemporary), a taste of First Nation cuisine and a See HEALING, Page 14

ith Fraser Valley goats disappearing by the truck load, local farmers are asking the federal government to speed up the implementation of new standards that would ensure that all goats carry identification marks. In 2004, the government asked the meat industry, including goat farmers, to move towards implementing a mandatory identification system for all animals. Safety concerns prompted the move; identification would allow any contaminated food to be traced back to the source farm. But it could also help stamp out the black market for stolen meat. But Sue Barker, a local goat farmer who had 18 animals stolen in September, says the plan has gotten bogged down in government red tape. Barker, who is chair of the Canadian National Goat Federation’s traceability committee, said that goat farmers were told in 2007 a program would be implemented in 18 months. In September 2009, the government told farmers to wait another 18 months. And now Barker has heard that it could be three or four more years before a program is in place. “The government just is not moving us forward fast enough,” said Barker. “It’s a real issue for us.” The federal Ministry of Agriculture could not provide a statement by press time. Tyla Elgersma, who had seven goats stolen from a Fairfield Island property last week, spent much of Thursday and Friday asking

local auction houses and butchers if they had seen any of her animals. Each goat had a unique stamp inside the ear, but most auction houses and butchers told her that they don’t check for identification simply because they don’t have to. Under a mandatory identification program they would need to record the source of each animal. “A butcher told me ‘it means nothing to me. If they come and if they’re not tagged and tattooed, I don’t care if they’re tattooed. I’ll just buy them and butcher them.’” That is despite, or perhaps because, of the value of goats and their meat. “Goat meat goes for a minimum of $5.50 a pound, which is double or even triple the price of beef,” noted Elgersma. She figures the thieves who stole her goats were hardly smalltime crooks. “We have a feeling that they were probably using something like a five-tonne truck, or something enclosed.” Barker said the importance of traceability can be seen in a theft of goats from a neighbouring farm. At that farm, thieves broke in four separate times over three weeks. Each time, the goat owners took more security measures and each time the thefts continued. For the third theft, the thieves broke through a padlocked barn door to get to the goats. The owners moved the remaining goats but the thieves still returned and plundered the barn’s freezer. Most worryingly, Barker said some of the 20plus stolen goats had been taking medication. But neither the thieves nor the butchers nor any consumers would have known that.

Recoil from receding retirement

rance, where people are serious about their leisure time, recently increased its retirement age from 60 to 62, despite massive strikes and protests. Britain is also considering raising its retirement age, as is the United States. It won’t be too long before this disease spreads to Canada. Before long it will be 66, then 68, then 72. A simple extrapolation of this trend (extrapolation is never wrong!) shows that by the time I turn 65, the retirement age will be 97. By the time I turn 97, the retirement age will be 113. By the time I turn 113, I will be dead. There are two ways to look at working longer. The first is to consider that a job keeps one active and involved in the community, and prevents one from being a burden to the state and/or your relatives. The other viewpoint is that it’s a conspiracy by greasy cigar-chomping plutocrats to squeeze every last drop of surplus value out of decrepit workers, who will then be tossed aside and left to rot as the welfare state is slowly chipped away, unless of course they die on the job, in which case they will be fined for missing work and processed into bone meal fertilizer and discount cat food. Guess which I think is closer to the truth? I’ve decided that dropping

I’ve always not-so-secretly wanted to steal a big pile of cash, but there are problems there. First off, you can’t actually get that much cash out of a simple holdup. I’m sure it seems like a lot of money to a desperate junkie, but it’s not exactly buy-your-ownprivate-island-money. Plus, I don’t look good with exploded dye pack

all over my face. The only kind of bank robbery that makes a lot of money is drilling into a vault. I could probably do that… let me just look up pneumatic water-cooled tungsten carbide drills online… cripes, I’d have to rob a bank to afford one of them! I could always become a bestselling novelist. It plays to my strengths (bookworm, types fast, owns library card) but all the good ideas are already taken! I mean, why can’t I write about a mopey, whiny teenaged girl who falls in love with a creepy, controlling, bloodthirsty corpse? Stupid cease and desist order. I’ll just have to rewrite the Almost Dark Outside saga a bit… Until my literary fame materializes, or until someone invents a cheap over-the-counter tungsten carbide drill, maybe I’ll just keep working. Hey, maybe a delayed retirement isn’t that bad! Maybe I have no hopes and dreams that don’t revolve around getting up to an alarm every single day, sitting in a boxy little room, and working for a faceless corporate behemoth that would fire me in a second if it generated a 0.01 per cent increase in shareholder equity. t would be difficult, indeed, not to take a cynical view of the current state of politics in the remnants of Gordon Campbell’s British Colum-

bia. It’s clear now, for instance, that his vaunted 15 per cent income tax cut —already less than adequate to repair the damage done by his stealthy and cynical implementation of the despised HST, which got him into hot water in the first place—was never more than an empty promise, a cynical ploy to prop up a popularity level that had become virtually nonexistent. Last week’s income tax cut reversal makes even more unnecessary the expensive television infomercial in which it was originally announced: Premier Campbell wasted nearly a quarter of a million dollars to announce his gambit to salvage an unsalvageable popularity rating. Well, his ploy didn’t work, so the premier subsequently took the expedient route of making a much more popular announcement: that of his pending retirement —which would have been even more popular had he announced a speedier process of stepping down. And that cynical analysis, offered publicly by Energy Minister Bill Bennett last week, resulted in his summary dismissal from the cabinet. In a final cynical analysis, should we be surprised that the fading premier axed his tax cut? If that money wasn’t needed in the first place, why was it necessary to take the huge political risk of implementing the HST, and particularly in such a sneaky way that was so dismissive of the rights of citizens and taxpayers to understand the processes of their government? Or to take a more cynical view of the current state of politics in British Columbia, the money represented by the reversal will be needed to allow Premier Campbell’s prospective successors to fashion believable promises… which they may or may not intend to keep.

Trees blocking drivers’ view

Editor: Dear Mayor Gaetz: I am concerned about the property on the corner of Bernard and Ashwell. They have planted trees all the way around their lot and it is now blocking the vision of motorists when they come to a stop on Bernard. Drivers cannot see oncoming traffic and as far as I know there has already been one accident after the trees went up. Is there anything that can be done about this? I thought we were promoting safe driving and this is not safe. I know, I drive there everyday. Thomas Wood Chilliwack

Trying to make things better Editor: Regular readers of the letters to the editor section will be relieved to know this will be my last letter about veterans’ issues. Unfortunately, while the commentary from respected veterans groups continues to be positive about our government’s actions, the letters section has become unnecessarily personal and partisan. For some of these writers, nothing that’s said and no amount of facts will make any difference. We’ve been working with groups such as the Royal Canadian Legion and the Canadian Peacekeeping Veterans Association to improve things for veterans and our government values their input and advice. Following the introduction of legislation just this week, the Royal Canadian Legion stated, “This bill, as a first step, makes great strides in improving the New Veterans Charter and encompasses many of the recommendations made by the New Veterans Charter Advisory Group and the Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs.” The President of the Canadian Peacekeeping

Veterans Association said, “With this bill we applaud the government for keeping its promise that the New Veterans Charter is truly a living document. Naturally, we are pleased to have had a role in this matter and that our advice and recommendations have been heard. Advocating for significantly increasing the financial support to our severely wounded veterans, to allow them to live with dignity, is a top priority for our organization. Accordingly, we are very glad to see this challenging issue being addressed.” Naturally, I am also delighted with these changes, and would like to thank those veterans who met with me during the past few months to advocate for these improvements. Interestingly, the Legion and Peacekeeper’s have chosen to work hand-in-hand with us to make things better, and will continue to do so. I believe we should listen and respond to these historic organizations that are making real improvements in veterans’ benefits and services, as well as doing excellent work in raising public awareness of veterans’ issues in a positive way. Here is just one example of their good work: Many veterans (including those who actually sat down with me in my office months ago) wanted us to change the way we paid the lump-sum payment to injured veterans. They made some compelling arguments, and our legislation this week reflects their input by allowing vet-

erans to choose between: Annual payments spread out over the number of years of their choice (with interest); Part of the award as a lump sum and the rest as annual payments over a number of years of their choice (with interest); or, A single lump sum payment. Furthermore, at any time, veterans who so choose may change their minds and receive the remaining amount as a lump-sum payment. That kind of change happens when organizations and veterans sit down together with our government to help us understand and address issues of importance to us all. Chilliwack Mets doing it again Editor: I attended the inaugural performance of the Chilliwack Metropolitan Orchestra at the new Chilliwack Cultural Centre last night and the adjective “phenomenal” is only the starting point that describes the new centre and how well the concert went and it only gets better from there. Internationally renowned pianist Jacques Couillard Despres played Chopin’s

“Piano Concerto No 1 in E Minor” brilliantly and magnificently despite being under the weather—the mark of a true performing professional. His fingers played the new grand piano effortlessly and with great emotion. I was totally amazed at his mastery of the tremendously difficult piece and noticed that he only glanced at the sheet music in passing around the fifteenth page of what must have been a 30- or 40-page piece of music, which is a tremendous feat of memorization. Even the emcee, Mayor Sharon Gaetz, remarked to the audience after the intermission that Mssr. Couillard Despres’s performance moved her greatly to point of thinking of bubbles, baths and other things which was high praise indeed. The orchestra under the guidance of Johan Louwersheimer did journeyperson service backing the soloist with a solid rock steady accompaniment, which was a testimonial to the conductor and all the musicians. The performance was truly awesome to listen to and watch. The second half of the performance was the orchestra playing Dvorak’s “Symphony No 9 in E Minor.” It was very well done and had many sentimental parts that most people would recognize like the Largo in the second part, which is a tune played by many pipe bands called “Going Home.” Again, under the skillful baton of Conductor Louwersheimer, the musicians delivered a truly quality piece of musical craftsmanship. What impressed me most was the dedication of these hometown musicians who play for the sake of the art and very few of them receive any remuneration at all. They play for the love of the art and to me that is what makes a hometown champion and makes the concert like this one especially fun to watch. It’s like going to a hometown

he Chilliwack Bruins haven’t been bitten by an injury bug; they’ve been attacked by a full-blown monster. A week after Robin Soudek was taken off the ice on a stretcher, defenceman Jesse Pauls broke his tibia—the largest leg bone below the knee—Friday against the TriCity Americans. The Chilliwack-born and bred Pauls, underwent surgery Saturday and will miss three to four months. Pauls will be sorely missed. He has skated on the Bruins’ top power play unit, and has been a key reason that the PP leads the league with a 26.9 per cent conversion rate. With 14 points through his first 21 games, Pauls was 11th in rookie scoring in the Western Hockey League. His name is added to a growing list of the wounded that includes a veteran defenceman (Zach Habscheid), two top-six for wards (Robin Soudek and Dylen McKinlay) and the recently anointed third-line centre (Brendan Persley).

Cockrill, led the UBC Okanagan Heat to a sweep of the Kwantlen Eagles last weekend, scoring just 36 points and adding 11 rebounds in two games of limited minutes. “Micah was able to shoot the ball consistently throughout both games,” adds head coach Darren Semeniuk. “Just when you thought he had cooled off a bit, he was able

to supply his team with some timely offence. In both games, Micah was the player to get our offence going. Could falling back be making us fat? A British professor seems to think so. Mayer Hillman, the senior fellow emeritus at the University of Westminster in London, has written an essay in the British Medical Journal claiming that losing an hour of daylight each fall could be contributing to obesity and illness levels in the U.K. and abroad. Hillman discusses the lack of exercise in the U.K. as the main factor in the country’s rising obesity levels, and notes that an extra hour of darkness in the evenings makes people even less likely to go outside and be active. “It’s an interesting hypothesis, but I don’t think we have any evidence from rigorous research to back that up,” says Dr. James Lu, the acting medical officer for the North Shore. Lu notes that a lack of daylight can bring about a slump in the psyche, often leading to a mood disorder, which affects

Weight for Winter Does a decrease in sunlight cause an increase in obesity? a substantial amount of Canadians every year, called Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). “Seasonal Affective Disorder . . . is influenced by the ability of the person who is affected by it to have enough exposure to sunlight or UV light, or light in general.” Lu suggests that our location in the northern hemisphere is the main issue for local sufferers. Because the difference in the length of daylight between winter and summer days is so pronounced due to our latitudinal whereabouts, that the effects of SAD are increased. Among the symptoms of SAD is a crav-

ing for carbohydrates, or “comfort foods,” which can lead to weight gain. Lu feels that a direct link between the clocks going back in fall and obesity is rather tenuous, but considers that this possibility should be of interest to researchers and warrants further examination. One recommended treatment for SAD is light therapy, using fluorescent lamps to replicate the additional hours of daylight in the summer months. Alternatively, one effective remedy for both is already programmed into us. “Going back to how we’re built and what we’re meant to be as a human liv-

ing being—we’re meant to be moving,” says Lu. When we are depressed, we go against our natural tendencies to be active. By getting the motivation to up our levels of fitness, we can stave off the blues and any unwanted pounds. The key is to be prepared for the oncoming time and weather fluctuation, says Lu.“Seasons change and we do need to adjust in terms of physical activity.” Lu recommends braving the winter chill and getting active outside. “You could still go for a walk or run in the winter in Vancouver, you may need to adjust to the rain or dress appropriately.” At this time of year, raking leaves is a great way to stay in shape, he says. Later on during the winter, shovelling snow is marvelous for the cardiovascular system. Excuses not to exercise abound

The vast majority of the population is not exercising enough to have a significant impact on their health. I have heard every reason under the sun for not exercising.For every excuse I can show you 20 people who are dealing with the same situations are making exercise a priority. Sticking with an exercise program comes down to two basic things: setting priorities and dealing with the barriers that are going to come your way.I am going to focus on the latter point. The most common barriers to exercise are lack of time, fear, lack of knowledge and decreased motivation. One of the major psychological theories that fitness professionals can use to address clients’barriers to exercise is called the Trans Theoretical Model of Change.To those of you with no interest in academia: stick with me for a moment. This model has been successfully used to help millions of people to quit smoking and stick to exercise programs.So it is not one of those textbook theories that doesn’t translate in the real world. One of the biggest things I take away from this model is that barriers will come.It is critical that you identify them ahead of time and have an action plan for how to deal with them. Regardless of how perfect your schedule is

and how motivated you are right now, the day will come where your schedule is not your own or you are losing the motivation you once had. For most people, time is the perceived major barrier to exercise.If this is you, then you need to schedule exercise in short, time-efficient bouts that will give you the maximum bang for your buck.For some people, this might mean exercising at 5:30 a.m.or 9 p.m. For others, it might mean doing 30 minutes at lunchtime or getting in a workout right after work before heading home. If there are certain times of the year that are busier for you, then you may have to cut back the time, but a 20-minute exercise session is better than none at all. If motivation is your issue, make sure you are constantly challenging yourself with new goals and new exercise routines. Working with a personal trainer, finding a group exercise class or getting a partner to exercise with are great ways to overcome lack of motivation. For some, it might be as simple as reminding yourself why you are committed to exercise. The goal of living until you are 100 years old with vitality and wit might just be the thing that keeps you going. Obituaries

May 5, 1922 ~ November 18, 2010 Edythe passed away peacefully while in Chilliwack Hospital. Edythe remained on her own after Bill s passing in 1999. Edythe & Bill have been long time residents of Chilliwack after moving here from Edmonton, AB in 1983. Edythe & Bill were well known by Legion members on Mary St. Both were active members in the community and enjoyed their time with neighbors and friends. Edythe was fortunate to remain independent in her own home until her passing. The family wishes to thank homecare, neighbors and friends for the excellent support which allowed her to remain independent. The family would also like to acknowledge the on going generous support from Veterans Affairs Canada. Edythe is survived by her son Bob (Pat) McKim, daughter Margaret (Mike) Bickerton, granddaughter Tara Jacklin, Grandsons Russ Jacklin, Jason McKim, Brent (Janet) Bickerton, Andy (Steph) Bickerton, Chris (Courtenay) Bickerton and 7 great-grandchildren.
