isitors who walk in the front doors of the new Sto:lo Resource Centre are immediately and literally surrounded by Sto:lo culture.

Behind are the traditional cedar welcome figure statues. In front is a large display case donated by the UBC Museum of Anthropology filled with 19th and 20th century cedar baskets. At your feet is a Stan Greene-designed spindle-whorl image. To both sides are Debra Sparrow-designed glass doors. And above are 24 light fixtures to represent the 24 bands in traditional Sto: lo territory.

On Friday, invited dignitaries were treated to traditional dancing, singing and speeches to celebrate the opening of the $12-million building on the Coqualeetza site on Vedder Road. On Saturday, the public were welcomed for an open house of the centre; a building that senior Sto:lo archaeologist Dave Schape said will be open to anyone.

“This is public,” said Schaepe, who is also the director of the Stó: lo Research and Resource Management Centre.

The new centre has professional, state-of-the-art climate-controlled rooms for archives and archeological material. There is a longhousestyle open area right behind the front lobby that uses high-tech audio/visual equipment to transport those in attendance to mountain tops or canyon fishing sites.

There is a language lab, and elders’ area and offices for staff.

Chilliwack-Hope MLA Barry Penner has been named Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation and Chilliwack MLA John Les has been named Parliamentary Secretary for HST Information to the Minister of Finance.

The move ends Penner’s stint as the longest-serving Environment Minister in B.C. history. Despite that, and his obvious comfort in the position of environment minister, he said he was not disappointed to be shuffled over to aboriginal relations and reconciliation.

hile the City of Chilliwack has the right to levy huge fines on the owners of homes where grow operations are found, documents obtained by the Times show the city has refrained from levying maximum fines against even the worst offenders.

Take the case of Jutta Kaufmann.

Kaufmann has owned two homes where grow operations were found.

In 2006, a grow operation was busted on property owned by Kaufmann, at 6200 Ryder Lake Rd. For that, Kaufmann was charged $2,650 by the city for an occupancy inspection ($200), a health and safety inspection ($200), a re-occupancy fee ($250), and health and safety service costs ($2,000).

Two years later, Kaufmann was once again on city hall’s radar after another property, at 7950 Atchelitz Rd., was busted. Again, he paid $2,650 to city hall.

Last year, Kaufmann pleaded guilty in Chilliwack Provincial Court to one count of breach of recognizance and two counts of production of a controlled sentence.

Any person who contravenes the city’s 2004 noxious trades bylaw can be fined up to $10,000. But that fine has never been levied. This despite the fact that Kaufmann, and several other property owners, have been convicted in court of producing marijuana.

In March, Andrew Peter Oosterhof, who owned an Anderson Avenue grow house busted last year, pleaded guilty to possession for the purpose of trafficking. He escaped the maximum penalty, as have owners of properties where multiple drug operations have been found—including a house right across from Chilliwack city hall from which crack cocaine, ecstasy and weapons were seized in September.

Officials say Chilliwack has avoided levying the $10,000 fine because of the extensive and uncertain court process required.

The $10,000 fine refers to what is called a “long-term enforcement method,” which requires municipal governments to invest staff time in the issue, hire a prosecutor and go before a judge to argue their case.

Even if the city were to win, the fine is up to the judge, with the maximum anything but guaranteed.

“We’ve been advised that we would not get very large fines,” said Rob Carnegie, the city’s director of corporate services. “I’m not aware of any judge levying a $10,000 fine for a

bylaw offence in B.C.” Factor in staff time and the cost of a prosecutor and the city could actually end up losing money. So instead, it has relied on the use of incremental fees and fines that aren’t subject to the whims of the judicial system.

They allow the city to recover its costs but Mayor Sharon Gaetz notes even a large fine isn’t much of a deterrent for grow house owners.“Ten thousand dollars, when they’re making millions, is nothing.”

That concern is not new. When the city first announced the bylaw, then-mayor Clint Hames joked that he feared the $10,000 fine would be paid in cash.

Of course, it’s never been paid.

he Chilliwack Fire Department is reminding the public to leave the explosives to the licensed professionals this Halloween.

Both the sale, and the use, of fireworks are banned in the City of Chilliwack, along with both the Tzeachten and the Skowkale reserves.

In 2006, the city passed a bylaw banning fireworks, an action that assistant fire chief Ian Josephson says has dramatically lessened the department’s Halloween workload.

“We have very little trouble on Halloween now,” he said.

Josephson said the ban had accomplished its goal of making local streets safer for trick-or-treating children and their parents.

“Fireworks are explosive devices and you put them in the hands of young people or inexperienced adults and bad things happen,” he said.

The ban does not apply to all First Nations reserves, but several local reserves have passed bylaws similar to the city’s.

Fireworks used to be sold on the Skowkale reserve, but the band outlawed them last year.

Les’s new role as Parliamentary Secretary for HST Information certainly won’t be an easy one given the controversy surrounding the tax and the coming referendum in 2011.

Despite the fines up to $1,000 for violating the fireworks bylaw, Halloween won’t be totally quiet.

Josephson said the fire department has granted a permit for a fireworks show at Promontory elementary school Sunday night.

To receive a permit, an applicant must possess a supervisor’s ticket issued by the federal government following a course.

“It’s a safe environment for people to enjoy the fireworks,” said Josephson.

Tough new assignment will ensue over the next year, separate the politics from what is best for British Columbians and their families,” he said.

Les has stood firmly with the decision to implement the HST and continues to do so.

“I have said right from the very

beginning the HST was the correct economic policy,” he told the Times.

“This is a very, very important question and it shouldn’t be held hostage to the transitory political agendas that people have. This is about the future of our families and our kids and our grandkid.”

he province’s largest Christmas night parade will bring a sparkle of magic to downtown Chilliwack this year.

The theme of the 2010 Chilliwack Ford Parade of Lights and Sound is “Experience the Magic” and participants are urged to display their interpretation on their floats.

The parade, hosted by the Downtown Business Improvement Association, will take place Dec. 4 and will be centred around Five Corners.

Last year more than 18,000 spectators watched more than 75 float entries.

Parade co-ordinator Jessica Clark says competition will be fierce this year.

“It is important to add sound and a minimum of 500 outdoor Christmas lights to your entry if you want a chance at a trophy,” she said.

Community, work, school and social groups are all urged to consider entering floats, and spectators will again be asked to bring nonperishable food items or clothing. ◗ Application packages are available at www.downtownchilliwack.com and at the BIA office at 9349 Young Rd. The deadline for registration is Nov. 22 at 4 p.m.

A painful reminder

This is part two in a two-part series entitled Desperate Hope that looks at the controversial Liberation Treatment for multiple sclerosis and the experiences of two Chilliwack residents. Part one told the story of Monica Braun who received the treatment this summer. Part two tells the story of Jeff Donegan who is scheduled to receive the treatment on Oct. 30.

J

eff Donegan endures pain that most people couldn’t fathom.

He suffers from a condition so painful—trigeminal neuralgia (TN)—that its nickname is “the suicide disease” because of what it causes some sufferers to do.

“It’s the most painful thing I’ve every felt,” he says of the shooting pain that can be triggered by stress, shaving or even a cool breeze.

But debilitating pain from episodes of TN is not even Donegan’s biggest problem. What has him truly fearful is the progression of his multiple sclerosis (MS)—which is likely linked to the TN—and what it is doing to his eyesight and his ability to play with his three children.

Jeff Donegan isn’t looking for a miracle, but one wouldn’t hurt

compare to not being able to play with his kids.

“I’ll be in a wheelchair before I’m 50 or 60,” he said. “I can walk and play with my kids, and I am happy.

But maybe 10 years from now I won’t have that. I’m petrified of that.”

What he is also petrified of is needles; something that can be a great challenge for an MS sufferer who has to inject himself frequently.

And something that will prove to be a hurdle this weekend as Donegan is off to a clinic in Newport Beach, California to receive the controversial Liberation Treatment.

The treatment was designed by Italian surgeon Dr. Paolo Zamboni to open up blood flow for a condition he called chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI).

The idea behind the treatment is that some MS patients have narrow blood vessels or stenosis. The theory is that routine balloon angioplasty can help open up the blood vessels, increase blood flow and help relieve the symptoms of MS, long believed to be only a neurological condition.

Neurologists have dismissed the

effectiveness of the treatment outright and few studies are under way.

On Aug. 26, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) convened a meeting of leading MS experts in collaboration with the MS Society.

At that time, CIHR representatives showed their skepticism of the connection between blood flow and MS and recommended baby steps forward.

Since that time, the MS Society has taken steps to encourage study of the treatment and has set aside $1 million for clinical trials, that is, if anyone ever develops and approves them in Canada.

The MS Society has defended its position as an advocate for patients based on the available science, which just isn’t there for Liberation Treatment. In an interview with the Times, a spokesperson for the society conceded that MS sufferers don’t want to wait for the process of studies and trials, which are actually being done faster than for most disease research.

Police found a “sophisticated operation housing 570 marijuana plants and $200,000 in growing equipment” at Coates’s property. Four people were charged who were said to live at the property, although police didn’t release names. There is no record of any charges being laid against Coates.

The city billed him the the standard sum of $2,650 and ordered him to dismantle an “underground structure” on the property. He apparently did so, because on Nov. 16, 2005, city inspector Garrett Schipper signed off on the completion of a permit.

But the property soon reverted back to its own ways. A year later, in November of 2006, police again stormed the very same Farnham Road property. This time, they found an “unsophisticated underground grow operation,” 191 pot plants, and a crystal meth lab. Five unnamed people were arrested. Again, there is no evidence that Coates was among them.

Coates got the same old $2,650 fine from city hall. City officials did, however, seem to want to make sure the underground grow ops were a thing of the past. A permit document note, “An inspection is to be carried out after the entire underground structure has been dis-

On Feb. 27, 2007, after two drug busts, nine arrests, 761 seized marijuana plants, and $5,300 of fines paid to city hall, Coates sold the property.

These days grow owners are paying more money to city hall. That $2,000 health and safety fee has been increased to $3,000 and a $575 water metre fee has also been added. Gaetz said those increased fees reflect the amount of staff time that is used addressing problems created by grow operaions.

She told theTimes the city retains the $10,000 fine as something that can be used against the worst repeat offenders. But when told about the various repeat properties and asked why the law is still on the book Gaetz sighs and says “I don’t know.”

And she is surprised to hear about the case of one man who, over the course of the last five years, has owned no fewer than eight houses before, after, and even during the time they were used to grow marijuana. He claims he is just an ordinary businessman. On Friday, the Times examines the strange case of Hieu Van Ngo.

Money needs good imagination

T

he Canadian and American dollars have been bouncing around like a pair of caffeine addicts on pogo sticks in recent days. The ups and downs are largely driven by fears that the U.S. Federal Reserve is planning to undertake some “quantitative easing.”

I’m a minor-league economy nerd, but I had to go look that one up the first time I heard it. It turns out that quantitative easing is the polite term for printing money. The central bank of a country picks a number (say a nice round trillion dollars) and adds it to their bottom line. They buy up stuff—mortgages, bonds, stocks, whatever—from the banks. The banks then theoretically have more money to lend out, and businesses and individuals can spend more and the economy gets a kick in the backside.

Of course, if you overdo it, you get hyperinflation and people have to carry their grocery money to the store in suitcases.

Why can a country simply decide there’s more money today then there was yesterday?

Why not? Money is imaginary anyway.

You certainly wouldn’t think it. We’ve invested such a huge amount of importance in money that it’s easy to forget that it’s largely a faith-based system. If no one believes in a currency, it quickly collapses.

BE OUR GUEST exchange started with barter. I’ll trade you five chickens for that goat, you give me 10 days help with my grain harvest and I’ll fix your plow. But you can only keep so many chickens in your wallet at any one time. And that brown one looks kind of sickly; is it really worth a whole chicken, or just half a chicken?

It quickly becomes confusing.

Creating an abstract token to stand for a value of labour and goods was a lot easier. So first we got gold and silver coins.

Then hauling large amounts of gold down bandit-haunted roads got annoying. You never knew when some guy in green tights would jump out and shoot all your minions and steal the lot. So things were abstracted further, to paper promises that there was a pile of coins somewhere. Then just the paper promises were left.

We have an awful lot of promises circulating these days, on paper, as electronic dots and dashes, coded into the magnetic strips on our credit and debit cards.

Mortgages, securities, even a country’s GDP are statements of

faith. Some parts of our monetary system are based on the real and verifiable—how much steel was produced last week, how much potash mined, how many Big Macs slid down Canadian gullets. But a good percentage of the valuation of every stock, bond, and currency is caused because some trader somewhere had a hunch, or because he’s feeling optimistic or pessimistic, or because his ouija board spelled S-E-L-L. This kind of thing makes some folks pine for the days when our currencies were based on gold, which allegedly has an inherent value.

Except that it doesn’t. You can’t do much with a big pile of gold.

It won’t keep you warm, you can’t eat it, you definitely can’t swim through it like Scrooge McDuck (I’m sure the guards at Fort Knox have tried this when no one’s looking). It only has as much value as people believe it has.

Take a $5 bill out of your wallet.

Take a good look at it. You’re holding one fractal point of a giant system based on imagination, faith, and hope. If you believe it’s worth something, and the clerk at the store, and his boss, and his boss’s bank believe the same, then it is.

It’s rare for people to doubt their currencies. Which, overall, is a good thing. Would you rather go back to trying to guess how many chickens your paycheque is worth? ◗ Matthew Claxton is a reporter with the Langley Advance.

espite the uncharacteristically warm autumn we’ve enjoyed this year, winter is drawing inexorably near.

If you’ve taken a trip into northern or interior parts of the province in the past week or so, you know what lies ahead.

But then, if you’re an adult and have lived anywhere in Canada for a few years, you should have an idea that good weather never lasts forever. If you haven’t already prepared your vehicle—and yourself—for winter weather, now is a good time to get started.

Ensuring you have adequate traction in snow isn’t just something to do to make sure you get where you are going. Your poor traction can be dangerous to vehicles around you, not to mention that you will likely slow or impede the progress of other motorists who have taken appropriate measures to prepare for winter. In that light, not being prepared turns out to be pretty selfish, as well as dangerous.

So get a proper set of snow tires. Sure, out here on the “Wet Coast” we might escape with only a few inches of snow just a few times over the course of the season . . . but we can also host snowstorms that dump a half metre overnight.

Most folks don’t realize that, as well as providing cold-weather traction, snow tires can actually increase stopping power by 25 per cent. That can translate into a considerable reduction in distance when the chips—and the snowflakes —are down.

Again for comfort as well as safety, get your vehicle set up for the cold weather ahead—you really don’t want to stall out on a backroad on a cold, cold night.

And while you’re at it, keep yourself in condition, too. If you don’t care about other people on the road, think of the new laws in B.C. that stiffen the penalties for speeding and drunk driving.

Keep your mind on what you’re doing.

Winter is a lot easier to take when you make it through alive.

Why cash in our civil liberties?

Editor: I would like to commend Vancouver Police Union president Tom Stamatakis for having the courage to condemn the new .05 drinking and driving law.

Stamatakis made it clear that the police were never consulted by the government about the new law before it was enacted. It should, however, come as no surprise to Stamatakis or any other British Columbian that this provincial government has gotten drunk off its own power and has no interest in consulting the people that it was elected to serve and protect.

Gordon Campbell was nearly four times the new pointzero-five law when he elected to drive back to his condo in Hawaii. Liberal MLA Jane Thornthwaite got smashed off Russian vodka at Sochi place and then tried to drive home until she got snared in a police roadblock. Now these same Liberal politicians have the audacity to bring in tough new laws that will not only punish the wrong people (people whose blood alcohol level is significantly lower than their own was) but will also undermine our freedoms and civil liberties.

It is clear that this new law is not just a cash grab, but an attempt to appease the members of MADD. A person has to be very naive to think this is going to keep MADD happy for very long.

This is merely one small step for MADD whose ultimate end game is to have point-zero-zero-zero laws instituted. For now though, the members of MADD have gotten their wish and as a result Jack Three Pack and Winona Tall Glass of Cider will be thrown under the bus.

Needless to say, the driver of that bus will have to have a blood alcohol level of .049 or less.

I get a kick out of the provincial government’s advertising to sell their new law.

That is sort of like saying theft is theft. But is theft . . . theft? I remember a few years ago having brunch with my mom at Younies and as two teenagers were being handcuffed to the ground for shoplifting from the clothing store next door, my mom was sneakily putting two packets of strawberry jam into her purse. Is theft . . . theft? Does the guy who has two beers with his dinner and then drives deserve harsher treatment than Gordon Campbell received?

MADD is merely a onetrick pony organization that has no problem trampling over our civil liberties in its hell bent pursuit of safer roads. Many moons before I was born, a man far wiser than I said that a people who are all-too-willing to cash in their civil liberties and freedoms for a little more safety and security don’t deserve either.

High cost of rail is just a myth Editor: It should be noted that Chilliwack’s public transit is utilized by about one

per cent of residents. We don’t need studies to tell us the reason for that is our bus service is terrible. The mayor pointed out that most vehicle traffic stays within town. What she doesn’t add, though, is that the type of rail being proposed is defined as “community rail,” designed exactly for that purpose. It is politicians who mistakingly label it a commuter system. The fact that it can also be used for travelling to other communities is what makes it so advantageous. It is only with a practical service like this that we will get the ridership on local public transit that we need. A 20minute trip from Yarrow to Downtown Chilliwack, for example, would take only 11 minutes by train. The recent Quality of Life poll showed only 23 per cent of Chilliwack residents are satisfied with existing public transit.

The mayor mentioned the cost of a new rail system but has left out that the province has proposed as an alternative a rapidbus system, which will cost a great deal more to build and maintain. Most people, including Chilliwack council, are totally unaware of this fact. The province isn’t exactly advertising all the costs of it; they’ve implied it will be cheaper. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Regardless of what system is built, Victoria and Ottawa will share in a cost partnership with munici-

palities. (The type of rail crossings needed will in fact cost about $50,000.) Simply throwing money at our broken bus system by adding more buses is not going to work either, and it is a sign of poor fiscal planning.

If Chilliwack council fails to move toward light rail as most of our other neighbours are doing, you the taxpayer will pay the price for it. The greatest myth to be corrected is that rail service will cost more. It costs less.

Research yourself and you will find it’s true.

Need to live within means Editor: I am not a big fan of Mayor Sharon Gaetz, however, I for one hope people listen to her position on the public transportation problems.

Let’s not re-invent the wheel here, the proof is already in our face. The taxpayer will be on the hook and if you want to know how bad it can be just turn the news on and watch TransLink. Every week it seems it is on the news talking about raising one tax or another to cover the costs: gas tax, property tax, this tax and that. There are people out there that do need to go into Vancouver and theWest Coast train seems to work fairly well.

For those it doesn’t work for, I suggest a train from here will not work for those folks either.

You know everyone wants our governments to just keep spending, but we are against the new HST and the increased gas tax and don’t raise our property tax, etc. So who is going to pay for all this stuff?

We have to stop this spending and live within our own means because we are destroying our children’s future.

veryone has been through it, is going through it or will go through it one day. However, those adolescent years bring with them a host of challenges for both teens and parents that can sometimes leave everyone feeling a little baffled.

“Teenagers are . . . posed with the challenge of finding a balance between staying close to their family, particularly their parents, and then forging their own identity, and so depending on the health of that family that can be easier or more difficult to do,” says Vancouver psychotherapist Katherine Young, who runs Head and Heart Counselling.

“So, if they are successful in forging their own identity but they have to really separate themselves too much from their parents, then they’re left really vulnerable without that guidance. On the other hand, if they don’t separate themselves enough, they’re left in an infantile state where they don’t figure out who they want to be.”

It’s a delicate balance that’s made even more complicated by modern society.

The overall health and strength of the family unit during a child’s early years can have an “absolutely massive effect” on how young people make their way through the

adolescent years, Young says.

“One of the biggest questions I think that comes up for teenagers and mental health is the structure in the family, whether there’s enough structure or too much.”

A child that does not have enough structure will have difficulties developing the inner controls that everyone needs to prevent things like substance overuse or computer overuse, which, Young says, is a problem she is seeing more and more frequently.

“Just learning the basics of life takes some discipline and structure to do; nutrition, getting a little exercise, all those basics.”

Too much structure can also hinder the transition from child to adulthood.

“With too much of that, it’s the same thing,” Young says. “The child doesn’t develop that internally. So, they can either go into a rebellion against the parents where they’re still not really discovering who they are; they’re just reacting against what they perceive as excessive control, or they just stay in kind of a child-like state and not learn to take risks in the world and face their fears.”

It’s a delicate balance and Young sees many families that are having a hard time walking that tightrope.

It’s all about emotional needs and it’s the parent’s job to try and read that in their children, she says. That’s what forms the

relationship and the connection between parents and child.

“You can have all the discipline in the world and if . . . there’s not a relationship to base that on, the kid’s not going to care.”

Teens are stereotypically thought of as moody and driven by hormones. However, Young says it all has to be taken into context.

“I always want teenagers to feel like their feelings, their behaviours have meaning and they make sense,” she says.

Registered psychologist Dr. John Wagner says there are signs parents should keep an eye out for: social withdrawal; problems with basic functions, such as eating, sleeping and making it to school; and misuse of substances.

“Experimentation is normal in adolescence,” Wagner says. “It’s normal to expect kids to do a little experimentation.”

However, for some, experimentation can turn into mis-use and abuse.

While there are individuals at every age that can be affected by serious mental illnesses, the general teen population is most susceptible to anxiety, depression and substance abuse. Wagner says he also sees a number of younger patients who practice self-harm or are exhibiting suicidal tendencies.

Healthy sleep, happy children

leep. Without enough of it, your child may have difficulty functioning throughout the day, concentrating at school and then settling down at night again. Sleep is how your child’s body recharges and prepares itself for the activities of the following day. So how do you know if your child is not getting enough?

Sleep consultant Crystal DiNicolo says, “Signs that your child isn’t getting enough sleep may include moodiness, irritability, behavioural problems, lack of concentration or motivation, hyperactivity at bedtime and clumsiness.”

She also adds that if you notice that your child wakes up frequently in the night or too early in the morning, or has an inability to cope with stress, sleep deprivation may be the culprit.

According to DiNicolo, parents can follow some general guidelines when it comes to how much sleep is enough. Per night, children aged three to five should be getting 11 to 13 hours; kids from five to 12 should get 10 to 12 hours; and 12- to 18-year-olds should aim for nine to 10 hours.

If you suspect your child isn’t getting enough sleep, a number of factors may be involved, from nutrition to sleep environment to bedtime routine.

Diana Steele, registered dietitian and owner of Eating for Energy, says there is a correlation between what a child eats and his/her quality of sleep afterwards, and what he/she eats can make the difference.

“If the food [you give your child just before bedtime] is high in protein, it can take a while to digest,” Steele says, giving an example. “Proteins release amino acids into the blood stream, which isn’t good for sleep.”

She suggests carbohydrates are better than protein for a pre-bedtime snack, but parents should make sure it is not sugary (sugar can cause a blood sugar crash and trigger crankiness, which can make sleep difficult) and does not contain artificial colouring (which Steele says has been linked to ADHD and other behavioral problems). She suggests whole-grain cereal and milk, toast and peanut butter or a little jam, or yogurt and fruit. Why? “Because when carbohydrates are digested, serotonins are released which turn into melatonin, which helps you sleep,” Steele explains.

Timing is important too, Steele says. Don’t send your child to bed 30 minutes after a big dinner, but don’t send him/her to sleep hungry either.

“If you have dinner shortly before bed, your child’s body will be spending all its energy digesting instead of winding down. And if your kids are hungry before bed, don’t let their growling tummies keep them up. Instead give them a small, healthy snack to tide them over the several hours of sleep they will get.”

What your children do before bed is linked to how long it takes them to reach sleep.

DiNicolo explains, “Stimulating activities such as watching TV or playing video games right before bed have been linked to the increase in the amount of time it takes for children to fall asleep. These activities should be stopped at least an hour before bedtime.”

DiNicolo adds that getting our children into a bedtime routine, no matter how old they are, can signal the mind and body that sleep is coming soon.

“This can include a bath, putting pyjamas on, eating a light snack or reading a book,” she suggests. “And choose an early bedtime so your kids aren’t pushed into overtiredness, which makes falling asleep and staying asleep much more difficult.”

“If a child is exceptionally irritable, that can be a sign of anxiety and depression,” Young says. “If they withdraw from a more full life that they were living, from friends and from activities; if you see a change; if they were pretty good at doing their homework and then they stop; excessive crying.”

These behaviours are not difficult to spot, she says. Parents should also keep an eye on kids who are involved in several clubs and after-school activities and always strive for perfect marks to ensure kids are not pushing themselves too far and not enjoying their activities anymore.

The adolescent years are also when control over things like extracurricular activities and food intake shifts from the parent to the child.

“For the first time they’re thinking, ‘Well, maybe I shouldn’t drink that Coke; it sure has a lot of sugar in it,’” Young says. “So they’re developing that inner control, and some kids go very extreme with that, and that’s where you see anorexia or bulimia, that kind of thing. But they

can be a little bit too much just black and white; it can be hard for them to hold a balance because it’s just so brand new to them.”

It may sound a little cliché, but both Wagner and Young stress the importance of communication, no matter what.

“One of the primary things is just talking with kids,” Wagner says, adding parents should be up front with teens, ask open-ended questions and take the time to listen.

“I think it’s really important to let your child talk to you about what they’re going through even if it puts you in an awkward position,” says Young.

“I would advise parents to try and walk that line and try to manage that grey area where your child can still come to you and talk to you, but that you still have some behaviour limits around alcohol and substance abuse and sex and all that stuff.”

Sports Six locals suit up for Selects Six Chilliwack lacrosse players will suit up for Burnaby Mountain Selects elite travel teams this fall.

Midfielder and face-off specialist Brett Carlson will play with the senior squad.

Defenceman Shane Leyen will suit up for Burnaby Mountain’s junior team, while midfielder Connor Lovely will play with the freshmen.

The U13 team features three Chilliwack lacrosse players: midfielders Max Leyen and Connor McNeill, and defender Brandon Lupton.

Attack ties up Nitro Chilliwack Attack U-15 girls soccer team hosted the Pitt Meadows Nitro girls this past Sunday in a first-place battle.

The Chilliwack girls controlled the game from the kick off, with early shots by Kristy Ricard and Jenna Snow which both passed by the right hand post.

But less than 10 minutes into the game, the Nitros cleared the ball through the Chilliwack defence and scored to take the lead.

Chilliwack quickly regained control of the ball with Megan Kelly running the ball straight at the Nitro goal then getting tripped by a Nitro foot. The penalty shot was taken by Sydney Steeves, who tied the game with a well-placed low shot.

Jock scraps At the 77-minute mark, Kristy Ricard took a corner kick that sent the ball straight to Chilliwack’s forward Jenna Snow, who skillfully capitalized.

But with less than six minutes remaining, and with the Nitro playing in full-forward mode, a Pitt Meadows attacker pounced on the rebound and tied the game at 2-2.

he true trick of Halloween these days is to find an activity that is suitable for the entire family.

Tyson Elementary School has come up with a family-friendly solution and is hosting Stage Fright, a Halloween-themed magic show on Saturday, Oct. 30 at G.W. Graham Middle-Secondary School Theatre.

“We are still in the process of raising funds for a new primary playground,” explains Tyson principal Chuck Bloch. “We liked the idea of a magic show that the entire family could enjoy and decided that Stage Fright would be a perfect fundraising project.”

Stage Fright is a spook-tacular 90-minute magic show filled with music, illusions, dance, humour, and a touch of the unknown. John Kaplan, one of Canada’s top-ranked magician/ entertainers, will star in two performances— one at 1 p.m. and the second at 4 p.m. Kaplan says Stage Fright is a special Halloween event that is sure to entertain the entire family.

“I love working in front of family audiences and these fundraising shows pull exactly that demographic,” he says. “This is the show we present exclusively in the month of Shocktober, and it’s tied specifically to the Halloween theme, which makes it unique.”

Tyson elementary parents and staff have been fundraising to replace the school’s playgrounds for several years. So far, an intermediate playground has been installed, and Bloch says the school is now working on the final push to get new equipment for the primary students. “The entire community has been very supportive in our fundraising efforts and it’s great to actually say ‘come and see the playground that you helped us build’ to our families. This is a community project and it’s wonderful to see new equipment installed and used by our students and families.”

Tickets for the show are $10 each, and there are a limited number of family passes available (four for $35 and five for $40). Along with the magic show, there will be a Canucks tickets raffle, a coffin full of Nintendo prizes, lots of door prizes, and a concession.

It’s book club time again at the Chilliwack and Yarrow libraries. The Chilliwack Library has a monthly program for contemporary fiction fans who like sharing their literary opinions in

a relaxed atmosphere. The Chilliwack Library Book Club, now in its eighth year, meets on the fourth Wednesday (Oct. 27) of each month at 7 p.m. New members are welcome at any time. Each month, participants are invited to join in an hourand-a-half of lively discussion and debate based on pre-selected fiction (and the occasional non-fiction) titles available to the group one month prior to each meeting.
