missing Chilliwack man’s father “fears the worst” after police connected a burned out vehicle to Michael Coutinho, who has been missing since May 8.

Police are now treating the disappearance of the 60-yearold Coutinho a s s u s p i c i o u s.

Property crime down last year

C

hilliwack RCMP received nearly 30,000 calls for service last year, a high number to be sure, but a figure less than the amount of marijuana plants seized, according to a year-end RCMP report.

Chilliwack police received 29,986 calls for service in 2009, the RCMP reported. Those are not all crimes; they could include repor ts of suspicious activity, tips or reports of other interesting, but not suspicious activity.

RCMP also reported seizing and destroying 30,035 marijuana plants and shutting down 36 grow-ops,

RCMP credit special prolific offender program for double-digit drecrease in B&Es and auto thefts including one last September where 11,520 plants were discovered in an underground bunker on Nixon Road.

On a smaller scale, police reported property crimes were down 22 per cent from 2008. Those numbers include a 29 per cent drop in auto theft—from 729 in 2008 to 517 in 2009—and a similar decrease in thefts from vehicles. Police also reported a double-digit decrease in break-and-enters in Chilliwack.

In Agassiz, car thefts and thefts from vehicles also decreased, but

police noted a substantial uptick in break-and-enters.

The RCMP credited its new Prolific Offender Management Program for much of the decrease. The program aims to reduce crime generated by so-called prolific offenders. It’s based on research that reports that half of crime is committed by just 10 per cent of all offenders.

“I don’t that we can directly attribute all of [the decrease] to our crime reduction initiatives we’ve been partaking in, but certainly that’s part of it,” said RCMP spokesperson

Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop, “the fact we’ve keyed in on people who we believe are the most active in our community and catch those people.

“We’re always looking for the public’s help, as well, to report suspicious activity and, working together, hopefully we can have another reduction next year.”

The report notes that 111 Mounties work in Chilliwack. The Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment also boasts 83 support staff, 33 911 dispatchers and a six-person First Nations policing unit.

C

hildren with reading troubles could soon leap ahead one grade level in three months with the help of a program the Chilliwack school district is piloting next year.

Fast ForWord is a computer-based program designed to rewire the brains of children with central auditory processing problems.

For such children—usually of average and sometimes above-average intelligence—reading problems stem from a delay in how their brains make sense of the sounds they hear, especially speech.

That delay makes it hard for them to link speech sounds to the letters and combinations of letters used in written language.

Fast ForWord’s computerized drills are designed to create new pathways in their brains to speed up the processing of sounds so they can make better sense of the written word.

The program is already being used in a number of B.C. school districts including Surrey, Burnaby, Coquitlam and the Sunshine Coast.

Some districts report that their students have gained an average of one grade level in 10 weeks using the program.

“That’s pretty big, pretty exciting stuff,” said Chilliwack school district principal Susan Edgcombe, who is designing the pilot project here.

Despite having heard rave reviews about the Fast ForWord program for a few years already, however, Edgcombe has taken her time bringing it into the district, preferring to wait and see what would happen in other districts.

“I’m very cautious about jumping on band-

wagons till there’s good, solid research,” she said. “I don’t want to put money out until I know that it’s a good plan, that it’s something that we can sustain and that we can build on.”

Edgcombe said she is satisfied the program’s impressive results are supported by solid research but adds she wants to know more about how well students in other districts have translated their gains with the program back into the rest of their learning at school.

“That is critical,” she said. “It’s nice to see pre and post tests giving us nice results, but how long can that be sustained when they return to the classroom?”

Although the details have yet to be finalized, next year’s pilot will likely involve 100 to 120 students who have been identified through assessments by district psychologists.

A mobile computer lab with seven laptop stations will service about 35 students at different schools for each 10-week cycle. The year-long pilot would include three 10-week cycles.

Students will spend 45 to 50 minutes on the program, five days a week for 10 weeks.

Altogether Edgcombe estimates the pilot will cost the district $37,000.

Finding enough students shouldn’t be a problem since Edgcombe said the district has seen a spike in central auditory processing problems among students in recent years.

“Everybody wants it,” she said. “I wish I could give it to everybody.”

Despite her enthusiasm, however, Edgcombe warns the program isn’t a cure-all for reading problems.

“There’s no perfect system for all kids,” she said. “It’s another tool in helping kids with reading, language and learning disabilities.There’s many many tools that have to go with this.”

Smoke in planter to blame

T

he blaze that tore through a Southdowne Place townhouse was caused by a cigarette left to smolder in an outdoor planter, according to assistant fire chief Ian Josephson.

Josephson said the home’s occupant disposed of a cigarette in the bottom of a planter on a patio deck. The ashes from the cigarette ignited the dry material and the flames leapt from there, up nearby vinyl siding and up to the roof.

The fire was not the first to start by such means, said Josephson.

“We’ve had a number of those over the years and they’ve been quite dangerous,” he said. With residents taking their cigarettes outdoors, Josephson said planters have become popular places to dispose of cigarettes.

Unfortunately, he noted, if a planter is covered, the plant, and the peat moss in which it sits, “is going to dry out really quickly.”

That can be a recipe for disaster.

Josephson said the public should make sure to safely dispose of cigarettes in an ashtray or other suitable receptacle; a bucket of water is good, as is a container of sand. But planters should be avoided; even if they seem convenient at the time they can create much heartache down the road.

Vehicles biggest source of greenhouse gas emissions

he City of Chilliwack has too many single family homes and residents don’t take bike, walk or take transit enough.

And while this may come as a blow during Bike to Work Week, at least most of us live closer to our work than in other communities.

Those are a few of the findings in community-by-community greenhouse gas emission (GHG) reports the provincial government has created so cities “are further empowered to measure and track emissions to reduce their carbon-pollution levels.”

The Community Energy and Emissions Inventory (CEEI) reports for all B.C. local governments to create GHG baselines for official community plans were issued Monday by John Yap, minister of state for climate action.

“These community emissions reports are the first of their kind in North America,” said Yap in a press release. “Local governments are key players in our province’s push towards lowering its carbon footprint.”

The reports give estimates of 2007 energy consumption and GHG emissions in three categories: on-road transportation, buildings and solid waste.

The goal of the reports, according to the provincial government, is to help municipalities help the province with its goal of reducing GHG emissions by 33 per cent from 2007 levels by 2020.

“It is estimated that local governments have control or influence over approximately 45 per cent of these emissions,” the ministry website states.

Chilliwack’s report identifies on-road transportation as being responsible for 57.1 per cent of GHG emissions. Buildings make up 32.2 per cent and solid waste the final 10.7 per cent.

Vehicle use is the largest source of GHG emissions and 82.6 per cent of residents reported driving (alone) to work, according to 2006 numbers. That’s up from 81.4 per cent in 1996.

Provincewide, 10 per cent of people took transit while in Chilliwack that was 1.1 per cent. In B.C., seven per cent walked and two per cent cycled to work, but in Chilliwack just 4.4 per cent walked and 1.3 per cent cycled.

That despite the fact that 64 per cent of Chilliwack residents live within 10 kilometres of work (44 per cent less than five kilometres) while 24 per cent travelled more than 25 kilometres.

The report states that a trend towards fewer single family dwellings is known to reduce transportation-related GHG emissions.

Sixty-two per cent of homes in Chilliwack were single-family detached in 2006. That’s down from 66 per cent in 1996, but considerably higher than the provincial average of 49 per cent.

The total GHG emission number is 514,804 tonnes for Chilliwack. Abbotsford produced 942,256 tonnes and the District of Langley 717,476 tonnes.

“The difference now is the playing field has been levelled by creating the HST.” Vander Waal said in his business there are different tax rates for different items.

Currently, for example, he pays seven per cent PST on greenhouse plastic. On July 1, he will pay 12 per cent HST on the product for his business but he will get that back as it is passed on to the consumer.

To illustrate the point, if Vander Waal buys a product for $10 with 12 per cent HST it will cost him $11.20. If he is able to sell that product for $15 plus HST he will collect $16.80. He then remits the 60 cents difference ($1.80 minus $1.20) to the government so, tax-wise, he comes out even.

“We are just simply transferring everything down the line,” he said. “But we as consumers have always paid it in the past, even PST, every business simply had to pass that along.”

Vander Waal’s business inputs will be reduced to the point where he estimates he’ll save approximately $80,000 a year.

“I would say it’s fairly significant,” he said.

Vander Waal is on the board of the B.C. Agriculture Council, a body that has long supported the HST for farming.

The BCAC has estimated the HST will reduce the sales-tax burden on the agriculture sector by $15-to-$20 million annually.

Beyond the direct cost savings of getting credit for HST-taxed inputs where previously the PST paid was simply lost, the HST will streamline the whole system.

“It was a real nightmare, an ongoing tax challenge you could say. Now we don’t have that challenge anymore,” he said. “Now it’s very consistent.”

Paul Boileau is the director of operations for local business Soprema and he also supports the HST for his business.

Boileau is also chair of the B.C. division of the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CM&E). In January, he brought in CM&E president Jayson Myers to talk to the local Chamber of Commerce about a number of issues, including the HST. Those in the restaurant and tourism industries have decried the HST, as it will hit them hard. Boileau said that the benefit to manufacturers will benefit the broader economy making the HST a good thing overall.

“We pay 40 per cent of PST,” he told the Times after that meeting. “Hotels, restaurants, they don’t create wealth. We generate $3 for every $1 spent.

For tourism it’s about $1.05 for every $1 spent.”

For massage therapists, barbers and bike shop owners, among many others, the HST will likely cost them business as the tax rate for these goods and services increases on July 1 when the HST is implemented.

But for the agriculture and manufacturing sector, the HST is a welcome policy change.

hree weeks ago, Const. Angelina Bowen walked into an auditorium at a Chilliwack high school filled with about 100 senior students.

Bowen, a Chilliwack RCMP community constable for crime prevention, wanted to know how many of them had heard of “LG parties.”

“Every single student put their hands up,” says Bowen.

It was enough to convince Bowen that she needed to counsel the Grade 11 and 12 students on the risks of the disturbing gatherings, and to issue a public warning to parents last week.

Bowen first saw the term “LG parties” on Facebook. She later found out from students that LG stands for “Little Girls” and that the parties are hosted by older teens who invite middle-school girls, usually between the ages of 12 and 13, with the goal of engaging in sexual acts with them.

As with most high-school parties, alcohol is usually involved.

In the world of teenagers, where rumour mills run rampant, it’s difficult to know just how widespread LG parties are, how many of the accounts are based on myth and male bravado, and how much is truth.

But there’s enough talk about them among students in the Fraser Valley and Lower Mainland for Bowen and other authorities to find it troubling.

“You can’t have this much juice and energy around it and for it not to be happening,” says Anita Roberts, founder of SafeTeen.

A week and a half ago, Surrey school officials and RCMP also issued a warning to parents about the “LGS Club”—which stands for “Little Girl Slayers”—at Lord Tweedsmuir Secondary School.

Students had posted a page on Facebook about the club, which encourages Grade 11 and 12 boys to seduce Grade 8 girls.

Even more disturbingly, Roberts said, students at Lord Tweedsmuir revealed to her that a second group of boys were betting on which “LG slayer” would seduce the most young girls before graduating.

She said students there talked about LG parties similar to those described in Chilliwack.

“Being in the business as long as I have, since 1976, nothing shocks me. However I will say the strategic, meditated, predatory nature of this is shocking. This is a very premeditated behaviour,” said Roberts.

School officials brought Roberts in to do workshops with 150 Grade 8 girls after learning about the LGS Club, but Roberts says it’s equally important to hold education workshops for the boys.

“Once something infiltrates teen culture, everything becomes normalized, they become desensitized,” she said.

In Canada, the age of consent is 16—and Roberts says it’s important to educate teens that they could be engaging in criminal activity.

Neither Chilliwack nor Surrey RCMP have received complaints related to LG parties or clubs and are not conducting investigations.

One 16-year-old Chilliwack teen said it’s common for middle-school girls to feel flattered by the attention of a senior student and that “most of the time, a lot of the girls in middle school now are dating high-school boys.”

“A lot of boys, I hear how they want younger girls,” she added.

In Vancouver, several students at an East Vancouver school said “LG” is a common term that carries a negative connotation used to describe a 12 or 13-year-old who wants to act older.

While they had not heard of the specific term “LG parties,” one senior said they knew of parties hosted by older students that much younger girls do attend—and get drunk.

“Parties happen and a bunch of little LGs show up and they get ridiculously trashed and make fools of themselves sometimes,” said Ariel Tylor, 17.

Another 16-year-old Vancouver student said “LG Hunters” was a common term to describe a senior student who “hunts” out young girls to engage in sexual acts with, although she had never taken the term seriously and said it’s mostly used as a joke.

Either way, Bowen says, it’s a reminder for parents to remain vigilant. “Like I do with my daughter, I want to know where this party is, I want to know if there’s going to be adults there and I go a step further and actually introduce myself to the parents. I would suggest these are your kids, take the steps,” said Bowen.

Media sadly out of touch

I

t’s no secret that these are among the most challenging times major media outlets in Canada and elsewhere have ever faced. Shrinking advertising revenues are the least of their problems. The digital era has ushered in a plethora of new ways for consumers to get their news and information. This is particularly the case with young people who, for the most part, couldn’t imagine themselves sitting down to watch the evening news or pick up the daily newspaper.

Several traditional media outlets have already folded. Others have downsized. Some have amalgamated and content sharing is now the norm in an industry where “scooping the competition” was once paramount. Most have incorporated digital content and completely revised their services to survive and thrive in the new communications era.

Still, I get the sense that big media in this country has a much more serious challenge than making itself accessible and technically relevant in the digital age. They have to accept that they no longer control the agenda. In days gone by, with only a handful of influential media sources available, a select group of organizations could determine what information was or was not important or newsworthy. It then became a matter of which news organization could best provide coverage.

Crime Matters All that has changed. Despite thousands and thousands of pieces of reporting, investigation, analysis and commentary, Canadians still don’t give a hoot about the so-called Jaffer-Guergis affair. No matter how hard media has tried to turn this into a scandal of Watergate proportions it’s clear the public is not interested and the story has resonated with no one outside the Ottawa press.

Ditto for the documents related to the Afghan detainee issue. If there’s a single Canadian laying awake at night wondering if the executive branch of the federal government knew about alleged improper treatment of a prisoner of war, he or she has yet to come public. Yet the national press is adamant this is the crime of the century.

It was the same with the most recent prorogation of parliament.

To the media (and a few dozen university professors) shutting down parliament ahead of schedule was a constitutional crisis of epic proportions and surely the death knell of democracy. To the rest of us, it was one big yawner of absolutely

zero consequence.

These three issues: Jaffer-Guergis, transferring detainees, and prorogation have absolutely dominated the news this year. One would be hard pressed to assemble any hundred other stories that have received half as much coverage as this triad of trivial. For all the hyperbole and foaming at the mouth, these “crises” have had no impact whatsoever on people’s voting preference.

Personally, I have half a dozen overlapping social circles consisting of long-time friends from high school days, musicians, academics, beer-drinkers, co-workers and more beer-drinkers. I have not heard one person among these utter so much as a word on Jaffer’s lobbying, some Afghan getting smacked with a shoe on his way to custody or Stephen Harper shutting down Parliament. Not once did a student, in class or casually, raise any of these issues in my presence.

I somehow doubt I’m atypical on this issue.

Canadians have been well served by the country’s long-standing media. I hope most of them continue to adapt and persevere. But until they realize that beating a non-issue to death will not force people to tune into something they have no interest in, all bets are off. ◗ John Martin is a criminologist at the University of the FraserValley.

ast year was a tough one financially for many Canadians as our country was caught up in a global recession.

While many of us cut back our spending, feared for our jobs and held on desperately waiting for an end to the downturn, Conservative MP Russ Hiebert piled up roughly four times his annual salary in expenses—$637,093 for the year.

Most of that, $422,733, went to paying for office space and staff, office equipment, printing and other costs associated with the job.

A little more than one-third of the total, however, went to the cost of travel between his riding (South Surrey-White Rock-Cloverdale) and Ottawa for Hiebert and his wife and two children. Hiebert appears puzzled that anyone would be offended at him spending $214,360 ferrying himself and his family back and forth.

He wants to keep his family together and if that’s what it costs well, that’s what it costs.

We agree with the many Canadians who have responded to Hiebert’s highroller spending with outrage.

Spending that kind of money during a recession is a slap in the face to ordinary Canadians.

Hiebert’s party campaigned on promises to reduce government spending and eliminate waste in Ottawa. When the Conservatives were in opposition, they relentlessly attacked the Liberals for their “sense of entitlement.”

Hiebert defends his spending by saying it meets the rules set out for such things.

It’s true, he’s broken no rules, but while obeying the letter of the law, he has abandoned the spirit of the Conservative Party of Canada in opposition.

His new mantra is: I’m entitled, the money’s there, I’m taking it, deal with it.

Mr. Hiebert, you don’t want to be separated from your family. Fair enough. But do you really expect the Canadian taxpayer to pick up this kind of tab year after year?

Maybe this isn’t the job for you.

Currie letter an insult to women Editor: Re: Gord Currie letter, May 25, Times.

I agree that truckers need better wages but hello, don’t we all?

I know I do but that’s life. What I find funny is that you would compare being a doctor to being a trucker? To be a doctor you need four years of university to even be considered to be let into medical school, then you have another seven years and up if you specialize that’s 11 years or more. You have huge student loans so you start out in debt before you even start so even though I agree with what your saying, I really think you need to compare wages with a job that’s more at your skill level.

My daughter is wanting to be a doctor so you tell me why would she bother if she could skip all the schooling and be a trucker instead?

They have to make higher wages for doctors so they have motivation to go to school for 11 years or more and they need the money to pay off the debt. Yes, you have many peoples lives in your hands while you drive but so what? There are so many jobs that put peoples lives in other peoples hands that make way less than you.

If you wanted a big wage everyone knows how to get it—go to school, investigate how much money you are going to make at whatever career you choose, it’s called

Times are changing and many men are staying home with the kids. Just because a baby comes from our body doesn’t mean we have to be the ones that stay home. Many women make more than their husbands so they go back to work while husband stays home, so don’t say it’s a waste for a woman to be trained as a truck driver. It doesn’t matter what’s between our legs, we can do a job just as well as you can.

If you have a wife she should be ashamed of your sexist remarks. We get maternity leave, then most of us go back to work. This isn’t the old days where we stayed home and made fresh bread every day. That would be lovely but most husbands aren’t doctors so if anyone wants to own anything in life, like a house, then both usually work.

Don’t bother training me because I might at some point have babies and have to change diapers? Nice, real nice, I’m sure I’m not the only female you insulted today.

Editor: Re: May 28 Faith Today article by Pastor Rick Bellavance.

I thought I would give religion another chance and read pastor Bellavance’s article “So what went wrong”? According to him, a good Christian is one who knows they do not deserve God’s love. What a horrible thing to say, that we do not deserve to be loved by our creator. Can you imagine a parent telling their young children as they tuck them in at night that they don’t actually deserve their love?

He goes on to say that as long as we obey God, he loves us “as long as he obeys God, God loves him.” Does he really think that this God is on such a power trip that he needs to be blindly obeyed in order to love us?

And what does true spirituality have to do with obedience and blind faith? Whether one believes in Jesus, the Buddha or the Magic Fairy does not make one a good or bad person.

Yes a lot of Christians are good people, but a lot of good people are not Christians; the two are simply not interconnected. I have nothing against Christianity, but these kind of messages do nothing to raise our consciousness or uplift humanity; they sound like old recordings which are no longer inspiring or convincing. Maybe that’s what went wrong.

Cats are often worse than dogs Editor: Re: Dog owners need to be more respectful.

I love animals—dogs and cats— but . . .

I agree wholeheartedly with the letter about dog owners. We have a few inconsiderate neighbours who allow their dogs off-leash when they walk them, and look the other way when they use our grass as their outhouse. But dogs are the lesser of two evils in our neighbourhood. At least our backyards are safe from dogs.

Cats are our greatest frustration.

There are five or six cats in our area that visit our gardens. Two are large, beautiful, tame cats that love our yard and those surrounding us. We all have spent a lot of time and money developing our gardens. We have fish ponds, bird baths, bird feeders and yards filled with the songs of birds. Sadly, we find bird carcasses and feathers around our feeders and bird bath.

I often have to chase away a large, healthy cat who is wound around the base of our feeder, or standing with paws on the bird bath. It takes a lot to get it to leave.

One neighbour imported vegetable plants and special soil. The first night the soil was all dug up and partly filled with cat dung. After replacing the soil and planting the plants, he was dismayed a day or so later to find them all unearthed and dying.

We are all tired of finding stinky “packages” as we dig in our flower beds, and flowers that are partly dug up in areas they are “using.”

If you have a cat and leave it outside, shame on you!

Wish our hospital was as good Editor: My wife and I took a cruise out of Seattle and by the time we had docked back at port the two of us were sick and all I wanted to do was to get to the Canadian border and to a hospital on this side of the 49th.

We looked for the closest hospital we could find, but fortunately, my wife missed a couple turn-offs, so we just kept going until we hit Chilliwack. I have been to some hospitals where the staff seem to be calloused to human feelings, but not this crew. They showed both my wife and I care, fantastic bedside manner and genuine compassion, and that extends to everyone who attended to us. There is only one negative aspect regarding the Chilliwack Hospital I have to mention, and that is the fact that I live in Vernon and not there, because if I ever need to go to the hospital again, I would want to go there.

Speaks on cohousing

arrow may soon be home to the first senior cohousing project in Canada and just the fourth in North America.

A world-renowned expert on senior cohousing and the consultant involved in the project at the Yarrow Ecovillage, Charles Durrett, will be in Chilliwack this week to introduce the concept to anyone interested.

Durrett is a leading expert on cohousing and is author of The Senior Cohousing Handbook: A Community Approach to Independent Living.

The Yarrow Ecovillage, which is now in the design and construction phase, is a mix of cohousing, a 20-acre organic farm and a mixed-use area. The first phase of the ecovillage, an intergenerational cohousing community, is well underway with several houses complete or under construction. A common house and additional residences are currently being designed.

But as part of the next phase, the ecovillage is considering a cohousing element just for seniors.

“The Yarrow Ecovillage is one of the stellar projects around,” Durrett told the Times during a recent interview. “It’s an incredible group of people.”

Durrett said the idea of cohousing for people 50 or older seems to be catching on. There are three currently in existence in the U.S.—one each in California, Colorado and Virginia— with about 10 in the planning stages.

“This will be the first senior cohousing in Canada,” he said. “There are hundreds of them in Denmark.”

Durrett and his partner Kathryn McCamant found the concept flourishing in Denmark and have been actively supporting its spread

in North America.

“I firmly believe that 20 seniors stranded on a desert island would do a better job of taking care of most of their basic needs than the same 20 left isolated or in any institution that we have devised,” said Durrett.

He said cohousing makes “life more convenient and more economical and more fun.”

On that latter point, Durrett said that senior cohousing really seems to bring a lot of joy to those involved.

“Every time I visit a senior cohousing community I feel like I’m visiting a college dorm,” he said.

Cohousing provides options that seniors need, according to proponents. For example, accessibility is more affordable in a cohousing format. Also extra accommodations for guests and caregivers are possible in cohousing.

“Since the residents participate in the design process, they determine the features they want,” Durrett added.

Gerry Kilgannon, a senior living in the intergenerational cohousing in Yarrow, agrees, and adds:“Seniors should be able to choose whether they want to live with other seniors or with other ages. It has to do with the individual and their values. Cohousing for seniors is needed.

The baby boomers will want the choice.”

So far, all of the B.C. cohousing communities are multigenerational. These communities work well; people love living in them. However, when seniors reach a certain age, they may need greater support.

Sundher surprises at combine A

t o p p u s h - u p s c o re, a meeting with Mark Messier, and no questions about boxers or briefs, allowed Chilliwack Bruins forward Kevin Sundher to come away pleased with his showing at last week’s NHL scouting combine.

Sundher joined 99 of the top draft prospects for the 2010 NHL Entry Draft—to be held later this month in Los Angeles—at the combine, which included interviews with NHL executives and an intense day of physical prodding and testing.

“It was really cool, it was a fun week and I really enjoyed it,” Sundher told the Times on Monday. “It was a once-in-alifetime experience.”

A late-season rise in his draft ranking secured Sundher an invite to the combine, where the Bruins centre was no pushover.

At (barely) under six-feet tall and just 192 pounds, Sundher was dwarfed by some of his fellow prospects. But that didn’t stop him from completing the second highest number of 150-pound bench presses and fifth highest number of pushups.

Sundher said the tests reflected the Bruins’ emphasis on upper body strength. And he hopes scouts

The upper body results may have

surprised some, but few fans will be shocked to learn that Sundher placed in the top 10 in the hand-

eye co-ordination test.

The physical tests were only half of the combine, however. Scouts and executives of each team interviewed the prospects to try and get a sense of which players have the mental makeup to excel at the highest level of the game.

While he had heard stories about interviewers grilling prospects with stange questions like “Are you wearing boxers or briefs?” Sundher emerged unscathed, with most of his questions focusing on his last season and future plans and goals.

A particular thrill was meeting, and answering questions from, New York Rangers great Mark Messier.

“I was in awe, of their presence,” he said.

The coming and going of the combine means the last hurdle is out of the way before Sundher is chosen by an NHL team.

“In about a month I’ll find out where my future lies so it’s an exciting time,” said Sundher who credits his rising stock among scouts to a dedicated effort over the past year to work on his allround game.

“I’m starting to figure out what it takes to get to the next level and that’s what teams want, they want guys who are willing to change and willing to do whatever it takes to get to the next level.”

A special sports day

S

pecial needs students from around the Chilliwack School District converged on Vedder middle school last Friday for their annual sports day.

Organized by Kirsty Fearn’s Grade 9 PE leadership class, the sports day was a blast for everyone, even if the weather made the dunk tank a tad chilly for the Vedder victims.

Fearn said the dedication and work put in by her students shows through in the smiling faces and the lack of assistance they need from their teacher.

“The day of the event, I really have to do nothing,” she said.

Students were able to try their hand at soccer, hockey, a bobsled course, a tandem bicycle and a javelin throw, among other events. But by far the most popular spot was the dunk tank, where eager students dunked volunteers from Fearn’s class.

Cougars sweep weekend Vipers bring home gold

C

hilliwack’s Peewee AA Cougars swept the Abbotsford Blacks in a Sunday baseball doubleheader. Chilliwack prevailed in both contests with 6-5 and 7-5 wins.

In the first game, Chilliwack got out to an early lead when Anthony Pharand scored on a sacrifice fly by Colin Kellington. In the second inning Daniel Rogers scored on a single

by Kellington and then Kellington came home on a single by Devyn Heggs. In the third inning Tyler Charlton singled and then scored on a triple to the fence by Parker Logan. Chilliwack added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth on singles

by Pharand, Heggs and Austin Naylor. Both Heggs and Pharand went two-for-three at the plate. Chilliwack pitchers, led by Pharand’s three scoreless innings, held Abby scoreless until the fifth inning, by which time it was too little, too late for the Abby squad.

In the second game the Cougar bats were red hot in the first inning. Pharand led off with a single before he and Kellington were driven by Josh Anderson’s double to deep centrefield. Hegg’s then drove in Anderson when he took the next Abbotsford pitch offered for a 260-foot homerun over the fence in straight-away centrefield. The fiverun first inning was completed when Charlton drove in Logan who had reached on a single. Chilliwack’s offence put the the game out of reach in the fourth when Anderson and Heggs both singled, before being driven in when Daniel Rogers singled.

The Chilliwack Peewee AA Cougars finished their regular spring season with a solid 10-6 record. ◗ Chilliwack will be hosting a six-team Peewee AA Fraser Valley playoff tournament this coming weekend at Fairfield Park.

hilliwack Vipers peewee fastpitch team took home another gold medal, this time from the May Mayhem tournament in Richmond.

The Vipers rolled through the round robing with a 4-0 record and overcame a 4-0 deficit in the fifth inning in the final round robin game against Ladner to secure a berth in the gold medal game.

The gold medal game was a spectacular display of top quality fastpitch from the Vipers and Fleetwood Marlins. It took only the first three batters to have our first three diving catches of the game made by Jordan Donegan, Brendon Donegan, and Filip Horak. Up 2-0 going into the fourth inning, Thomas Bunn cleared the fence to put Chilliwack up 3-0. The lead was short-lived, however, as a two-run homerun by Fleetwood got them right back in the game.

Then, in the seventh inning and down 3-2 with the bases loaded, Fleetwood managed to pull off the rare but exciting squeeze bunt to tie the game up. Having placed first in the round robin game the Vipers had home-field advantage and last bats. Brendon Donegan led off with a double and then managed to advance on a wild pitch, setting the stage for an amazing win.

Facing a two-strike count, and the infield playing in tight, Parker Hendsbee managed a single to right field to score the winning run and win the Vipers’ second straight gold medal of the season.

The team continues to be lead by pitchers Ryan Kaplanis and Brendon Donegan. With its 5-0 weekend, the Vipers have now won all 19 of their games this season as they attempt to qualify for the Western Canadian Games in Calgary later this year.

in revenues each year, meaning agriculture really is still the backbone of the “Green Heart of British Columbia.”

But agriculture is facing some challenges of late based in large part on a high Canadian dollar, which is causing “huge, huge impacts” for the sector, according to the B.C. Agriculture Council (BCAC).

“There’s huge challenges overall,” BCAC executive director Andy Dolberg said in a recent interview.

Dolberg said that farms, which are still overwhelmingly family-run in B.C., have generally seen prices drop while costs have increased.

“So, they haven’t got the return in the marketplace. Dairy, eggs and poultry have done better, [but] hogs have taken a major hit, as have cattle. Some [farms] have consolidated and got larger because they have to compete.”

Despite that, Dolberg said there is growing optimism.

“Things go in cycles in agriculture, [and] people have to eat.”

Stan Vander Waal owns Rainbow Greenhouses in Chilliwack, is on the board of the BCAC and is doing his best to look on the bright side of the agriculture industry right now.

While Vander Waal acknowledges some of the pressures from the dollar, increasing costs and lower returns in the overall sector in recent years, with particular pressure on cattle and hog farmers, he says things are good at Rainbow.

“Things are healthy,” he said in a recent interview. “This market continues to grow.”

Vander Waal points to an interesting reason why the ornamental live-good sector that he works in is having success: “People today seem to spend more and more time at home because trips are more

Long-valued as Chilliwack’s largest agricultural employer, Vander Waal says his employment numbers are only on the rise.

At last count Rainbow listed 160 employees, with about 45 of those being seasonal; that leads the way in the local market. Second on the list is Inline Nurseries with about 110, which also includes a considerable seasonal segment.

According to the CAC, agriculture provides annual cash wages in excess of $33.7 million, a number that is even higher if agri-related manufacturing, supply and service companies are included.

The latest census data from 2006 show annual gross farm receipts over $252 million in Chilliwack, up from $184 million in 2001 and $141 million in 1996.

While farmgate revenue has seen some struggles in the last few years since 2006, Vander Waal is still optimistic about the business and the future. He and the BCAC point to the government’s implementation of the HST as a particular benefit for agriculture.

Beyond the direct cost savings of getting credit for HST taxed inputs where previously the PST paid was simply lost, the HST will streamline the whole system.

“It was a real nightmare, an ongoing tax challenge you could say. Now we don’t have that challenge anymore,” he said. “Now it’s very consistent.”

methods for breeding better livestock and crop varieties that are more disease-resistant or of better quality, and to improve foods, feeds, fertilizers, disease vaccines and pest control products so they have more desirable traits than they had before. Biotechnology uses biological processes to produce substances that help agri-food production, the environment, industry and medicine. This has been going on for thousands of years.

Bob is survived by his dear friend Betty Meagher; family Barb and Ed Pardely, Joan and Ken Townend, nieces Luara and Margo, nephews Kendall and Richard, three grand nieces and a grand nephew.

Born March 27, 1933, in Vegreville, Alberta, where he completed his formal education. Bob started his career with the Bank of Montreal in Alberta, was transferred to Montreal in 1962, and retired in 1989 after 38 years with the bank.

He moved to Chilliwack, BC, in 1992, where he enjoyed fellowship with friends in Probus, Toast Masters, and several other social and travel groups. Bob was a member of a St. John’s Anglican Church.

There will be a memorial service at St. John’s Anglican Church on Friday, June 4, at 11:00AM, followed by a reception in the church hall. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Calgary. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Chilliwack Hospice Society, or a charity of your choice, will be appreciated.
