‘Unfair’ violation of rules

ore details have emerged linking Chilliwack MLA and former mayor John Les to at least three properties involved in boundary adjustments in agricultural land that violated the rules.

The properties were identified in a damning Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) report that

he theft of a brass plaque honouring a Chilliwack war hero is “disgraceful,” according to one of those who helped raise the money for its placement.

Sometime between April 19 and 26, thieves stole a large plaque that paid tribute to Lt.-Col. Coulson Norman Mitchell, an engineer who won the Victoria Cross in Europe and helped build All Sappers’ Memorial Park in Chilliwack.

The theft “was like a dagger through the heart,” according to CFB Chilliwack Memorial Society founder Jim Harris. “I immediately thought, what kind of a message is this sending to our currently serving See DAGGER, Page 4

Upfront Briefly Tired of fighting the same fire A third blaze on a Rosedale property has fire officials asking the owners to tear down the dilapidated structures on their land.

For the second time in just six weeks, fire trucks raced down to the 50800 block of Yale Road to the property where several abandoned buildings sit vacant.

While a dozen-plus fire fighters were able to contain the fire, the repeat visits have caused fire and city bylaw officials to ask the owner to tear down the remaining homes.

“That’s fire number three that I know of,” assistant fire chief Ian Josephson told the Times. And if the building’s aren’t torn down, Josephson predicts there will be more to come.

He emphasized that repeated fires cost the city money and occupies valuable resources far from the centre of town, where they could be needed at a moment’s notice.

1996 Keeping recyclables out

The City of Chilliwack initiated a ban on all recyclable materials from entering the Bailey Landfill. In an effort to reduce the amount of garbage going into the landfill, council passed the bylaw in January. Refuse was to be randomly inspected with violators asked to put any found recyclables in a nearby container.

Sanborn has been on both sides

Former approving officer now working for others trying to get land out of the ALR

I

t won’t come as much of a surprise to those involved that former Cultus Lake Park Board chair and City of Chilliwack director of development Grant Sanborn is at the centre of the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC) affair getting so much attention.

The recent ALC report slammed the city for 66 “inconsistent” agricultural property adjustment from 1991 to 2009. Most of those improper boundary decisions were made before 2002, after which some ALC rules changed.

Sanborn was the city’s director of development and approving officer for boundary changes during the time that now Chilliwack MLA John Les was mayor. Les was mayor from 1987 to 1999 and Sanborn was the approving officer from 1992 until 2000.

Before 2002, the approving officer could make boundary adjustments without reporting to the ALC and the job was intentionally designed to be separate from elected officials.

In a January 2000 memo, former Chilliwack chief administrative officer Ted Tisdale listed a litany of concerns, such as “procedures have not been followed,” “the city will end up ‘eating’ that cost,” and “there has been a breach of policy . . . [that] has brought into question the city’s credibility.”

An internal investigation was apparently conducted at city hall at the time, and an unidentified staffer was “separated from their employment.”

Sanborn abruptly left his job in June 2000.

Since that time, he has worked as a development consultant through his company, H.G. Sanborn & Associates.

in the Fraser Valley for over 20 years. During this time, Grant has had the honour of being the approving officer for the City of Chilliwack and the Chief Planner for the Fraser Valley Regional District. Mr. Sanborn is presently consulting on rezoning, land development, and issues regarding the ALR.” Over the last few years Sanborn has frequently come before council with applications on behalf of clients.

Much of his work since his time at the city has focused on ALR applications. In September 2006, for example, Sanborn was at city hall with an application that would see Glad Tidings Church and Highroad Academy expand onto agricultural land.

In the application, Sanborn, acting as an agent on behalf of the Glad Tidings Fellowship, suggested the congregation and school are at capacity.

“This is entirely supportable,” said current Mayor Sharon Gaetz. She was then a city councillor at the Sept. 4, 2006 meeting. “There is a huge waiting list to get into this school.

There is also a need in our community for more churches.”

The application was forwarded to the ALC with support for removal from the ALR. Sanborn was again in the media spotlight in 2008 when it came to light that a downtown restaurant owner had paid Sanborn $1,670.98 in late 2007 for an ALR subdivision application he never made, and that she found out later would never have had a hope. “‘I worked in the city, I have lots of contacts there, we will be able to do it,’” Peggy Fridriksdottir said she was told by Sanborn. “‘It’s a cakewalk’ he said.”

Fridriksdottir also said that in July 2007 an RCMP officer with the commercial crime section told her police were investigating Sanborn’s business dealings.

Sanborn did not return a call from the Times before going to press.

Another link to Les is Timothy Christian elementary and secondary school. In 1993, the school, which is located in the ALR, applied to the City of Chilliwack to expand its playing fields by purchasing land from a neighbour.

T h e b o u n d a r y c h a n g e w a s a p p rove d despite the fact that the ALC had rejected a similar proposal from the school in 1980 on the basis that the land had “very good capability for agriculture.”

A site inspection was conducted by the ALC on May 23, 2008 and it was discovered that one hectare of the adjacent farm property was being used as a parking lot and playing field at Timothy Christian.

Les’s wife is an employee of Timothy Christian, and his brother, Frank Les, serves on the board of Netherlands Reformed Congregation, the church that owns the school.

While the ALC report is not pursuing punishment or remedies for the 66 inconsistent boundary adjustments, it does require the City of Chilliwack to apply for non-farm use for the five schools and Fairfield Island Park.

ALC executive director Colin Fry did not respond to Times calls before going to press to answer whether or not the school properties may have to be returned to farmland.

Timothy Christian principal Doug Stam told the Times that as educational leader of the school, he is somewhat concerned about the issue, “but I’m not concerned it will affect the school grounds at this point.”

The third property linked to Les is 11080 McSween Road. Les purchased the property through a numbered company. Then, in May 2000, in the time between he was mayor and elected as Liberal MLA, the city received an application to rezone the lot from “agricultural lowland” to “agricultural residential.”

Police dog puts the bite on would-be car thief

The black brass plaque was 18-inches-by24-inches and explained how Mitchell won the Victoria Cross by leading a party of engineers that removed explosives from a German-held bridge in the First World War. Mitchell was later stationed at CFB Chilliwack, where he was the driving force behind the erection of the 42-tonne All Sappers’ Memorial.

In 2005 the historical society raised around $3,000 for a plaque to honour Mitchell near the monument he helped create.

“An awful lot of money and work went into just getting the money for the plaque,” said Harris.

The plaque was built in Nanaimo and then mounted and welded in place by volunteers.

Initially, Harris said it was “virtually indestructible. But last year’s refurbishment to All Sappers’ Memorial Park forced the plaque to be moved.

It was mounted on a concrete stand, which didn’t prove to be much of an obstruction to the thieves.

“The perpetrators didn’t have too difficult a time getting it off of there,” said Harris. “It

Adding to the pain, the plaque was stolen just before sappers began arriving from across Canada for a reunion.

The tribute to Mitchell was almost certainly stolen for its value as raw metal, according to police.

For his part, Harris is sympathetic to those who feel they need to steal to support themselves.

“They’re trying to survive,” he said, “That too is very sad. You’ve got to feel sorry for folks like that.”

All he is asking is for the plaque back.

“Our society would be more than grateful if they would return the plaque, no questions asked.”

That, Harris knows, is unlikely.

Cops clip weed growers

hilliwack Mounties scored a hat-trick of marijuana grow operation takedowns Friday.

Police took down three grow operations, seized 734 plants and arrested five people in what they believe are unrelated, small-scale pot plantations.

Two of the grow houses were located in the Promontory Heights area; one was in the 5200 Markel Drive area, the other in the 46000 block of Stoneview Drive. The third, in the 47000 block of Chartwell Drive, was in the Little Mountain area.

With Promontory elementary school directly across from one of the grow houses, students were asked to remain indoors during lunch time on Friday.

“When it comes to the police realizing they are there, it’s obviously a bit of a safety concern which is why the school wasn’t in a lockdown, but the kids weren’t allowed out at lunch,” said Const. Tracy Wolbeck. “Public safety is always the most important factor in this type of police work and something we take very seriously.

Thankfully entry was gained without incident and the school was able to resume their day.”

Of the five men taken into custody, two were arrested at the Stoneview house and three were caught at the Chartwell home.

Open house for new schools

T

he public will have a chance to get a firsthand look at plans for two new Chilliwack schools in the coming week.

The design of the new Yarrow community elementary school will be unveiled at a public open house on Wednesday, while plans for the Rosedale elementary/middle school will be on display at an open house next Monday.

The Yarrow school will be built by Yellowridge Construction Ltd. and will feature room for 375 students between kindergarten and Grade 6. The facility will also include 460 square metres of space for preschool and before- and after-school care. A performing and visual arts space, community education area, along with offices for support staff, local agencies will mean the building will be used by the entire Yarrow community.

The Yarrow open house takes place

Wednesday between 4 and 7 p.m. at Yarrow Community elementary school, 4605 Wilson Rd. School district representatives and the design-build team will be available to answer questions.

Yellowridge Construction will also build the new Rosedale elementary/middle school. The school has space for 510 students between kindergarten and Grade 9, along with 810 square metres of space for day care, and youth and aboriginal services.

Another 100 square metres will be reserved for multi-purpose community uses. An onsite neighbourhood learning centre will offer additional benefits to Rosedale residents.

Design and school district officials will be present at the open house—on May 10 between 4 and 7 p.m. at Rosedale traditional middle school, 50850 Yale Rd.—to answer questions and explain the projects.

Digging into gravel mine

Seeking opinions on transit

ennifer Bigham wants to know what you think about Chilliwack’s transit system.

The 26-year-old grew up in the Vancouver area, her father is a B.C. Transit driver and she is used to a “functioning transit system.”

Such a system does not currently exist in Chilliwack, in her opinion, so she is trying to do something about it.

“Our goal is simple, to improve the Chiliwack Transit System to a point where it becomes a viable alternative to taking a car for Chilliwackians,” she recently told the Times. “Right now I’m trying to amass a group of 500-plus people in both the eWorld and the real world.”

Bigham has lived in Chilliwack for four years and has recently gotten rid of her car in favour of a bike.

“I’m currently commuting the 10 kilometres to my work on my bike, which is acceptable, but not ideal, for the summer months,” she said.

“I would be pleased if the transit system could offer a bus that goes near my work for the winter months, as it is very difficult to bike in the snow.”

Bigham says many people complain about the system, but too few are willing to work on making change.

“I hope to get the collective opinion of at least 500 Chilliwack bus commuters to create a well researched, thoughtful report to submit to the city council and transit authority with demographic specific data,” she said. “So we can tell them in detail

the types of changes we would like to see.

Mayor Sharon Gaetz said she applauds Bigham’s move to bike to work. She said of the transit system that the city “freely admits its inadequacies” but that it’s “all an issue of what we are willing to pay for.”

Gaetz said she is always willing to listen to the public, but that Bigham’s should maybe be directing her energies at the Fraser Valley Regional District where the transportation needs for the entire region are currently being reviewed.

Students want mass transit option

W

ith tens of thousands of commuters shuttling between Abbotsford-Mission and Chilliwack every day, a local transit advocacy group is renewing calls for a link between the communities before the release of a major public transit study.

The group, Students for Sustainability, is urging local government to help workers, shoppers and families

who travel between Chilliwack and Abbotsford by implementing a mass transit option as soon as possible.

“We want governments to implement this link in 2011 at the latest, which means there’s a need to develop the plans for it now,” said SFS representative Daniel van der Kroon in a press release.

The group notes that commuters travelling between Chilliwack and

Abbotsfort—and students in particular—don’t have options other than personal vehicles.

“It took a 6,000-person petition to convince governments to create a route to Aldergrove and now it’s one of our busiest routes.

“We believe demand is just as high or higher for commutes between Chilliwack and Abbotsford,” said van der Kroon.

he campaign against a gravel mine in the Chilliwack River Valley is growing, and the provincial government has provided the Times with responses to a number of the claims on the website of the group behind the proposal.

Eco-Logic BC created stopthegravelpit.com to oppose an application by Southview Sorting Ltd. to open a gravel pit at Larson’s Bench, about 25 kilometres up Chilliwack Lake Road.

On the group’s homepage the “key points of the proposal” are outlined. The mine involves 25 hectares of land in an “environmentally sensitive” area, the proposal is for 40 years of gravel extraction, and there will be an estimated 94 gravel truck passes per day.

An e-mail response from Jake Jacobs, media spokesperson for the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, disputed these points.

The application is for a 40hectare site, 30 of which was logged in 2008 and the mine proposes a two-hectare disturbance, according to the ministry.

In response to 40 years of gravel extraction, the ministry said the application is for 30 million tonnes. In response to the number of truck trips, estimates are between “12 to 47 trips per day, however market conditions eventually dictate truck traffic.”

As for claims that there have been no hydrological or environmental assessments, the ministry responded that

an environmental report was done “which included relevant information on surface and subsurface hydrology” and that the “the proponent provided a detailed environmental report for the site prepared by an independent consultant along with their application, that report was available for public viewing.”

The ministry also responded that the Fraser Valley Regional District (FVRD) has not opposed the project, but indicated support would be contingent on approval by the Agricultural Land Commission (ALC), something the ALC has authorized.

FVRD Area E director Dave Lamson said while he is not necessarily in total opposition, he certainly has concerns about habitat and the number of trucks running up and down the road each day.

The application to the ministry comes as the region’s Fraser Valley Aggregate Pilot Project (FVAPP) has stalled. Some have criticized the FVAPP, saying it will entrench the aggregate industry’s access. If the FVAPP were in effect today, the area in question would be labelled a “red” zone and deemed unsuitable for gravel extraction.

The ministry response regarding the “red zone” was that the zones in the FVAPP “have not gone through local government re-zoning, therefore planning staff at the FVRD would be best suited to comment on that process.”

pring has sprung and gardeners around Chilliwack are getting out in the nice weather to pull weeds, plant their properties and, of course, water away.

But water is a commodity too often taken for granted and too often wasted.

This week—May 2 to 8—has been proclaimed DrinkingWaterWeek by the B.C.Water & Wastewater Association (BCWWA).

“Sometimes we take our tap water for granted, in some parts of B.C.,” said Daisy Foster, CEO of the BCWWA, in a press release announcing the proclamation.

The City of Chilliwack has some of the best water in the world and has won many awards for its high quality. Yet that source of water— the Sardis-Vedder aquifer—is nearing the limit of its capacity.

“We have this incredible source of water and then with car washing, lawn watering, toilet flushing, it’s a waste of a very valuable resource,” Environment Minister and Chilliwack-Hope MLA told the Times last week. “We need to find a way to get more uses out of our water.”

Mayor Sharon Gaetz agrees.

“Water is precious,” she said. “We take it so much for granted.”

Gaetz’s son lives in the Phillipines where water comes in tiny pipes to each home, pipes that are often tapped and from which water is stolen, she said.

“It takes you two hours to fill your washing machine,” she said. After a load of laundry, that water is put into buckets to pour into the back of toilets for flushing.

“That’s just what they do,” she said.

On the average day, Chilliwack uses 30 million litres of water, a number that rises to 52 million litres in the summer.

As of June 1, strict annual watering restrictions come into place. They don’t end until Sept. 30.

Gaetz’s message to residents is to not use pesticides on lawns or anything else “that you wouldn’t want to drink.”

She also said that residents who adhere to the water restrictions can save as much as $150 on utility bills.

“Some people don’t care about the environment but do care about how much they pay,” she said.

The city has also created a low-flow toilet rebate program and a rain barrel program to help encourage conservation.

“These are very important to do,” Penner said. “I would really encourage developers to show some corporate leadership in putting in those types of fixtures because you get a big benefit.”

As a result of low snowpacks around the province, Penner said he is very concerned about droughts this summer, although Chilliwack is likely to be less affected than many other areas, particularly the Okanagan.

White shakes up B.C. politics

A

ll bets are off regarding the next B.C. provincial election. For months the NDP has had a commanding double-digit lead over the Liberals in the opinion polls.

The erosion of support for the governing party can be attributed to voter fatigue as much as to anger over the carbon tax and HST. Still, 2013 is a long way away and much can change. Could British Columbians really have such short memories of the devastation the NDP caused the last time they were in power? Would Gordon Campbell stepping down and being replaced as leader be enough to secure a fourth term?

But that all changed this week with the announcement that former Abbotsford-Langley MP, Randy White, has joined the BC Conservative Party. Make no mistake about it—the Conservatives are going to be major players in the next election.

Most people probably weren’t even aware there was a provincial Conservative Party but with Randy White’s announcement things are going to be very different on the political landscape.

White was a popular and effective parliamentarian who served his Fraser Valley constituents honourably for many years. At

Crime Matters times controversial, he was a tireless advocate for criminal justice reform and did more to champion victims’ rights than any other Canadian. His tenure as a sitting MP, house leader and high-profile critic in the House of Commons gives the BC Conservatives instant credibility and recognition.

For now he will chair the party’s advisory group. But his signing on is going to result in many others taking out memberships.

A quick glance next door shows how quickly things can change.

A tired and stale governing party that has ruled Alberta for decades took voter support for granted and the upstart Wildrose Alliance now looks like it has a very serious probability of actually winning the next election.

Could the same thing happen in B.C.? A year ago it would have been absurd to even contemplate the thought. The B.C. Liberals absolutely crushed the

despised and incompetent NDP in 2001, leaving them with a measly two seats. The first thing they did was slash personal income tax by 25 per cent. They made education an essential service, denying teachers the right to strike. Numerous other popular announcements were made and most important, they fixed the province’s finances after two terms of NDP bungling.

But all that seems to be irrelevant as one poll after another shows them lagging far behind.

So what’s a voter to do who is done with the Liberals but could never be so reckless and masochistic as to return the NDP to power? Until a few days ago there weren’t really too many options other than to wring one’s hands in angst.

But with Randy White coming on board the B.C. Conservatives are now legitimate players. He routinely doubled the combined votes of all other candidates in Abbotsford-Langley and understands grassroots populism as well as anyone in the business.

heft is bad. It says it so right in the Bible, the Criminal Code of Canada and other Very Important Texts.

But some thefts are worse than others.

Stealing a loaf of bread to feed your family? Not so bad. Stealing a chocolate bar from the corner store? Not good.

Stealing a plaque that honours a man who put his life on the line in defence of this country? Very, very, very, bad.

Jim Harris, who helped raise money to fund the valuable plaque, is noble to feel sympathy for the thieves situation.

After all, the crime makes one ask oneself, what kind of a person steals a memorial plaque?

We hope that kind of person is donating the proceeds to the Canadian Red Cross, feeding their family or, at the very least, buying themselves a week’s worth of local, organically grown produce.

But somehow we doubt it. And whatever the case, it doesn’t really matter.

The fact is, the theft of this tribute to a cornerstone of Chilliwack’s military history is unjustifiable.

And, again, very, very, very, bad.

So with that in mind, we will kindly join with Harris and ask for the thieves to return the plaque. Please, it was probably dark when you ripped it out of its holding spot and you may not have known its significance.

Assuming that you have read it, please give it the respect it deserves and return it to its keepers.

Failing that, if you have already sold it for scrap, we ask that you retain some of your proceeds and make a small donation to the CFB Chilliwack Historical Society.

And if you won’t do it for us, or the society, please do so for yourself.

Years from now, hopefully you will pull yourself out of the rut that now sees you stealing scrap metal. We hope you regain a sense of pride in your community, and feel shame at what you have stolen.

At that point, you will need to know that even at your lowest point, you still retained the knowledge of what is right, and what is wrong.

Editor: It is clear that the members of MADD have gone truly mad with their latest draconian drinking and driving laws that the Liberals are going to ram down our throats along with the much maligned HST. Point-zero-five is the new magic number that MADD deems unfit to drive. Does any rational person believe that “Joe-three-beer” or “Jane-glass-of-red-wine” are a threat on our roads?

If a person is caught molesting a child they are entitled to a lawyer and a trial in a courtroom. Conversly, if you don’t get in an accident and you blow .081 or above, you will automatically lose your licence for three months without being able to defend yourself in a court of law. Does MADD believe a child molester should be accorded more legal rights than a person whose blood alcohol level is .081? Should a person at that number lose their licence for three months when the coward who intentionally tried to mow down the flagman on Reeves road gets to keep his?

There has been a slow but steady erosion of our civil liberties in this country. It began with the Gestapo-like checkpoints. It continues today with the .05 law and the Conservatives’ goal of giving the RCMP the right to pull anyone over without having to have due cause.

The police have that right in North Korea; they should never have that right in Canada.

If we keep giving up our civil liberties and freedoms in this country in order to attain a safe secure utopia, we’ll wake up one day and find ourselves in an Orwellian police state. This endless pursuit of safety has left us with a country that

Need to get educated Editor: The amount of ignorance surrounding the gay and lesbian community is truly astounding. The backlash received from Sardis Secondary’s Gay Straight Alliance club and their new poster campaign is saddening to me and all those who support this cause.

To those who wrote to the Times believing that homosexuality is a choice, I pity your ignorance. Although the majority of society practices heterosexual relationships, it does not mean that the gay community is purposely choosing to be different. Why would gay people choose to make their lives more difficult?

I also take offence to the reader who grouped gays together as people who are emotionally sick, are infected with AIDS, and bring pain to those around them.

In reality, AIDS is a disease that can affect anyone, no matter one’s sexual orientation. Although many may not consider themselves to be homophobic, a slanted,

stereotypical view is no better.

Sylvia Commerford wrote that Sardis should depict another way of life, so students can have a choice. The number of straight couples hugging and kissing in the hallways and after school is quite enough already.

If the issue of religion is the problem in accepting these posters and what they stand for, perhaps Sardis’ prayer club should launch their own poster campaign.

There are many non-religious students who attend Sardis, and the prayer club’s weekly advertising of their meetings has never been a problem.

Perhaps people in Chilliwack should start embracing an open mind before they reject love in its many forms.

Their ignorance is showing Editor: With all due respect to Ms. McCune and Ms. Commerford, although Brittany Sandves’ posters can be called provocative, they weren’t by any means explicit.

If Ms. McCune or Ms. Commerford had a loved

or close friend who was gay, they would be wellinformed and less ignorant of the issues gay youth face with at the high school level.

I’m not worried about Ms. McCune or Ms. Commerford being homophobic, but it’s their ignorance that’s getting in the way and only serves to continue the abuse gay youth face from peers whose homophobic bullying comes only through ignorance. This is what Ms. Sandve is trying to reduce or eliminate. To me, this is a goal worthy of respect.

These women, and those like them, suggest these students, or “children,” as Ms. Commerford likes to call them, will somehow be bewitched or deceived, that they will experiment through sexual “hookups” by the masses. There is a huge difference between sexual orientation and sexual behaviour, between having these feelings and desires and acting on them.

Let me ask you an important question, Ms. McCune and Ms. Commerford: When did you chose to practise, or became aware of, your heterosexuality? Was it when you had your first boyfriend.

When you became engaged to be married? On your wedding night? I doubt it. Common sense tells us people become aware of their sexuality, gay or straight, around puberty. For some even earlier.

I’m sure Ms. McCune and Ms. Commerford, responsible and moral people they are, made the decision long ago that they would walk out their heterosexuality in a responsible manner, through waiting until marriage and being faithful to their marriage vows. That was a “choice in behaviour.”

News Safety upgrade The Upper Prairie Road rail crossing will receive safety upgrades, the federal government promised Thursday.

Gates and constant warning time equipment will be installed at the crossing, Chilliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Chuck Strahl announced.

The project is forecast to cost $219,100, of which the government will pay $175,280.

“It’s pretty easy to show how upgrading rail crossings needs to be an ongoing thing for traffic management and for safety,” Strahl told the Times. “There are not many accidents at rail crossings but when they happen they are catastrophic.”

Nearly half of all railway deaths arise from accidents at crossings, according to the government.

J-school at CSS Chilliwack secondary school students will get a chance to develop a nose for news next year.

The board of education has approved a new course, Journalism 12, developed

by Chilliwack secondary social studies teacher, Jeff Dartnell.

Journalism 12 is a yearlong, four-credit course for students in Grades 10 through 12 who will produce a professional-quality, student-directed newspaper covering issues related specifically to Chilliwack secondary, neighbouring schools and teenagers generally.

Students will learn the basics of news writing, newspaper design and photography.

The course is scheduled to start in September and has generated a lot of interest already with 36 students signed up.

Fish hanging out in schools

ore and more chain-link fences at schools all over Chilliwack are covered with brightly-coloured fish.

Students at the Education Centre on Elm Drive recently put up more than 100 of them. Students at Watson elementary are now working to get 350 of them up on that school’s fences.

The painted fish are part of the Stream of Dreams program the aim of which is to remind us that all drains lead to fish habitat.

Stream of Dreams bills itself as a n “e c o - e d u c a t i o n p ro g ra m” with a particular focus on local watersheds.

The idea is to create both a

Over the years, fish have been lost due to weather and vandalism.

In 2008 some fish were replaced and this year, the PAC decided to expand the fence around the new playground with 350 more fish .

Michelle Cooper of the PAC spearheaded the project and has got assistance from local woodworker Robert Prinse who is a member of the Lions Club and the B.C. Wooden Toymakers Society.

Prinse wanted to help out and tell this “positive story about what kids are learning about and us adults can learn a little bit more too.”

Schools all over Chilliwack have “streams” on their fences. Watson elementary first created a stream as a celebration of the school’s 50th anniversary in 2005, according to Kim Thoms, chair of Watson’s parent advisory council (PAC).

“Our students learned about Chilliwack’s aquifer and how to protect it, and then had the opportunity to paint their own fish,” she said. “The finished product was a beautiful fence and to this day, children still look for their special fish.”

Rocking the boat for sacred salmon

The big canoe looked tiny as it floated down the middle of the muddy Fraser, its 10 paddlers urging their vessel downstream into the Mission Harbour Thursday evening.

On board were Sto:lo Nation members from the Chilliwack and Hope areas, Mission residents and others who want to save the west coast salmon from extinction.

In a 10-day river voyage spearheaded by Mission’s Elena Edwards, paddlers from several communities along the river are out in support of salmon researcher Alexandra Morton’s campaign to protect the species. Morton has documented the negative effects on juvenile salmon from the

sea lice that thrive around commercial fish farms on the coast, and she says the lice are killing the young salmon just as they head out to sea.

Edwards wanted to help, and quickly found support from First Nations communities and area residents, such as Mission’s Gary Coulter, who provided the 10-person canoe. The voyage began with a traditional Sto:lo send-off in Hope on Wednesday, with stops in Chilliwack, including Island 22.

Stepping out of the canoe on Thursday, Chilliwack resident Cherie Combs was exhausted but happy.

“I’m so glad I got to participate in this. I care about the salmon. In Halq’eméylem, [we say] ‘sacred salmon,’ ” she said. “The salmon are very important to the Sto:lo people. It’s not just about us, it’s about the animals, too.”

New faces carry hope for a better season

t’s a make or break year for Chilliwack FC’s U21 Pacific Coast Soccer League men’s reserve squad.

After a disappointing season last year that saw the under-21 FC miss the playoffs, coach Graeme Slee is hoping that a couple of new players will prove that Chilliwack’s team is making strides in the highly competitive league.

“The team is considerably stronger, so we’re excited, we’re very optimistic,” Slee told the Times before travelling to Vancouver Island for Saturday’s opener against Victoria United.

Slee hopes new centrebacks Brent Wantke and Ryan Darling will solidify a defence that allowed a league high 29 goals in 10 games last year.

Their addition reflects a determination to play a tighter style.

“We’re definitely going with a little bit more of a defensive mindset,”

Slee will look to Meekaylae and Zenow Renaerts to move the ball forward.

“They’re massively skilled and fast, which helps us out wide,” he said.

Up front, Chilliwack once again boasts one of the PCSL’s most dependable strikers, Craig Robinson.

Robinson, who stars for the UFV Cascades in the fall, was second in the league in scoring last year and has notched 17 markers over the past two seasons.

The team plays its first three games on the road—in two weeks they head to the Okanagan to face the Penticton Pinnacles and Okanagan Whitecaps FC—before hosting its home opener May 22 at Townsend Park.

Mouth guards and rugby or soccer cleats are required.

“For us to get awareness of the league and the club we have to get results to get sponsorship to continue the program,” said Slee.

He tries to shield his players from that pressure, but obtaining the support of the Chilliwack business community lurks in his mind.

“If we don’t then it could fade off.

Then there’s not an avenue for these kids to play in and a stepping stone for us to get premier-level players out here.”

Men’s team drops opener, women win Slee’s squad dropped their opener, 4-1, to Victoria. Jeremy Amberg scored the lone goal for Chilliwack.

The women’s premier division side had a better start to its season, thanks in large part to the Snook sisters. Danika Snook scored twice, and older sister Roxanne added a helper to push Chilliwack to a 4-0 win over Okanagan Whitecaps. Kristen Vanderpauw also notched a goal.

The following letters are from Grade 5 students at Rosedale elementary My mom is amazingly wonderful. Despite being an amazing person she is also talented because she is just like my grandma. Sewing is just one of her hobbies since she has been doing it a long time, just like she has been painting a long time.

If she could cook any better it would be scary because it would be higher than the world’s best chef standards!

When I don’t understand

my homework I wait until she gets home and helps me patiently. My mom happily agreed to host my grandma and papa’s 50th anniversary because she loves my family a lot. Surprisingly, she can host a fun, formal and very special party or celebration.

Of course even without all these qualities I would still love her. I love you mom!

Many moms are great but only one is special. That wondermom would have to be mine. How many great moms do you know who don’t ground their kids? Very few. Painting and using pastels are just two of her artist talents. he Optimist Club of Chilliwack hosted an award luncheon May 1 at Dakotas Restaurant for their annual top three essay contest winners from Chilliwack secondary school.

This year’s topic was “The Internet: Today’s Evolution or Tomorrow’s Menace?” and it produced some interesting responses from the entrants, who are all in Chilliwack secondary school long-time instructor Muriel Morris’s advanced English class.

Third-place winner Leonie Kuijvenhoven and second-place winner Alyssa Jensen both felt that the Internet is ver y likely tomorrow’s menace while first place winner Nicole Wedler argued that, “It is easy to blame the Internet, making it the scapegoat for human choices, but it is you and I that must be culpable for both the positive and negative attributes associated with the Internet.”

The Chilliwack PAC (parent’s advisory committee) presented the first-, secondand third-place winners with cheques for $100, $50, and $25, respectively, while the local Optimist Club awarded their efforts with a luncheon in their honour as well as medals, certificates, engraved pens, and Tim Horton’s gift certificates.

Volunteers head to the mountain

10th anniversary of Vedder Mtn. cleanup yields tons of garbage

he Vedder Mountain Trails Association hosted the 10th Annual Vedder Mountain Trails clean up and trail maintenance day April 25.

VMTA, representing the interests of Fraser Valley Mountain Bike Association, Back Country Horseman of BC, Vedder Running Club, Chilliwack Outdoor Club and Cascade Offroad Motorcycle Club on Vedder Mountain, co-ordinated the efforts of 80 recreationists to revitalize the well-used and well-loved trail network and recreational area.

What was a relatively small, grassroots event organized and manned by a small and dedicated group of mountain bikers in April 2000 has grown over the last 10 years into an event where trail runners, dirt bikers, horse riders, hikers and four-by-four enthusiasts now lend a hand to the dedicated mountain bike contingent. More than 200 hours of volunteer labour yielded 5.6 tonnes of illegally dumped garbage and recyclables being removed. An additional 100 hours of trail maintenance was provided in order to reduce the effects of erosion on the system of trails on Vedder Mountain.

Chilliwack Search and Rescue (CSAR) were on hand to provide education.

Donations were collected on behalf of CSAR to assist with their operations.

Continued illegal garbage dumping has resulted in a very similar amount of garbage being removed from this area every year. VMTA director Mark Steinebach stated, “the ongoing garbage dumping is not being done by people enjoying the Vedder Mountain trails but our group is willing to stepup and do the hard work to take care of this area.”
