during the surprise presentation Tuesday. “I don’t even think I can drive. I’m shaking.” It’s been a hard year for the Hinton family. One year ago this week, Hinton slipped from a truck while unloading garbage at the dump and fell 20 feet into a concrete pit. Besides a painful two-week
recovery right in the middle of the Christmas holidays, the accident meant the beginning of serious financial problems. Unable to continue his job in the scrap removal business because of ongoing health problems, Hinton struggled to provide the basic necessities for his wife, Angela and their two daughters, six-year-old
Annika and five-year-old Brittany. “I h a d t o e m p t y t h e g i r l s’ piggybanks and I had to use that to buy food and fuel,” he said, “and it made us realize what we take for granted in life. It’s been tough.” Things would get tougher. In July, his son Logan was born
Surrey Mountie and Chilliwack businessman has been charged with marijuana trafficking and more than a dozen gun offences. Const. David Clarke, 35, is charged with selling marijuana and possessing stolen pot along with stolen ID documents and police property. Additional charges relate to alleged possession of a semiautomatic FN FAL assault rifle, a Glock 9mm pistol, a Colt pistol, a Mossberg pump-action shotgun, a RemingtonMohawksemi-automatic rifle and ammo magazines. Clarke has been a Surrey RCMP member for four-and-a-half years. He also runs a Chilliwack-based business called LEO Productions. His company’s website, www. leoproductions.ca, says, “we specialize in bringing in speakers and hosting seminars that are geared toward law-enforcement officers,” and features photos of what appear to be an RCMP cruiser and an RCMP-issue service pistol. The site provides a mailing address in Chilliwack, at a Corbould Street property shown by provincial land titles records to be co-owned by Clarke, who lists his occupation as “public servant.” The majority of the offences with which Clarke was charged, including the marijuana trafficking, are alleged to have been committed in Chilliwack, according to court documents. “They are serious charges,” said B.C. RCMP spokesman Sgt. Rob Vermeulen. “It’s disappointing any time we see a police officer charged. It’s disappointing not just for the

Robert Planje has been missing for nearly two weeks.
fficers visited the home of Robert-Jan (Robbie) Planje at some point before the 64-year-old man went missing nearly two weeks ago, an RCMP spokesperson has confirmed to the Times. Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop couldn’t say when police officers attended the home because no charges have been recommended by Chilliwack RCMP. However, Planje, who was described as “kind to a fault” by friends, was “not at all” known to police, according to Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team. Last week Colleen Crook told the Times that on Dec. 12, just hours before he disappeared, Planje had returned to his home from chur-
Planje told a close friend he feared roommate whom police had earlier released from jail after altercation ch to find himself locked out of his house by his crack-addicted roommate, who was throwing food around the trailer. That man is now being held in custody on unrelated matters, according to police. He is described as a “person of interest” in the case. Crook said that police came to the home and arrested the roommate. The night before he disappeared, Planje drank coffee with Crook and told his friend of 40 years that he was afraid for his safety and unsure if the roommate would be released from jail. Homicide investigators are asking for the public’s help again after a
search of the Fraser River failed to turn up any sign of Planje. However, IHIT is now revealing that they found “items thought to be linked to the Planje home” on Ballam Road, shortly after the man disappeared. ◗ IHIT is asking the public to report anything out of the ordinary they may have seen on Ballam Road between 4 and 10 a.m. on the morning of Dec. 13. Anyone with information is asked to leave a message on the IHIT tip line by calling 1-877557-IHIT. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-

C h i l d r e n’s Ho s p i t a l h a s been especially stressful since an automobile collision in August totalled the family’s vehicle and set back Hinton’s recovery even further. “I ’v e j u s t w a t c h e d t h e m g o through so much in the last year,” said Shelagh Harder, a family friend who nominated them for the car giveaway. Since August, the Hintons have tried to piece together transportation by buying beaters and borrowing vehicles, and Harder is overjoyed the family finally has a reliable car to call their own. “I was more excited than anything because this was one major big stress that’s going to be lifted,” she said. For Fix Auto manager Joe Kovarik, who has rounded up the Christmas vehicles and co-ordinated the process of getting them into shipshape for six years, that’s what the car giveaway is all about. “You can change a family’s life just by giving them a vehicle,” he said,
“and that’s just an awesome thing to do.” Kovarik beamed about this year’s vehicle. Fix Auto has put about 20 hours of body work and 15 hours of painting into the car (along with about nine hours of cleaning, polishing and shampooing), but mechanically it was the best they have ever had to work with. “Whoever had the car kept it up,” said Kovarik. “As long as it’s wellmaintained that car is going to go forever.” Every year getting the giveaway car together is a group effort. Once again this year Chilliwack Ford donated the vehicle (their third). Ideal Auto Wrecking donated parts. Simpson Automotive took care of the mechanical work and chipped in four free oil changes. Sherwin Williams donated the paint. Canada Direct Insurance donated $250 in gas cards and BCAA provided a new battery, an auto safety kit, $100 in gas cards and a one-year BCAA membership. Why do sponsors get involved? For Chilliwack Ford owner Dale Hewitt it’s simply the right thing to do. “It’s nice to see the reaction on

Publisher Nick Bastaja of the Chilliwack Times, another sponsor of the giveaway, admitted to getting a little choked up watching Hinton’s daughter’s bounce around in the back seat of their new car. “I have two daughters myself,” he said. “They’re grown up now, but it wasn’t that long ago I could see them at that age, and I have to admit it makes you very emotional.” For Bastaja, the giveaway is
worthwhile because it makes a longterm difference in the lives of local families. “It will help them to help themselves,” he said. But the car has had a short-term impact too. “I’ve never seen them smile so much,” said Hinton of his two daughters playing with Fix Auto mascot Mr. Fix and jumping around in their new car. “This is the best Christmas present ever.”

eegan Newlove-Nicholas, five, had some big decisions to make this Christmas: nerf guns or transformers? Keegan, this week’s winner of Cottonwood Mall’s Christmas smile photo contest, was given a $100 gift card to spend however he saw fit. But Keegan and mother Erin decided to use that money not for themselves, but to buy two needy boys and girls presents. “I like giving presents to boys and girls,” Keegan told the Times Wednesday. Keegan wants Transformers for Christmas this year. But he loves his nerf gun—and has an engineer’s understanding of how it operates—and figured that the boys would like to play with the projectile devices. So he went with what he knew and picked the boys guns similar to the ones with which he plays with his step-brother. When it came to picking toys for two girls, Keegan, kindergartner at Highroad Academy, took a cue from his classmates, who he says like Barbie Dolls. As for his own holiday plans, Keegan said he is looking forward to Christmas. Asked what he likes about the day, he says quickly “Jesus’s birthday.” After a short pause, he adds, “and presents.” Chilliwack Community Services’ Angel Tree bears dozens of cards, each one with the name of a boy or girl in need of a present. Erin Newlove-Nicholas said that she and Keegan pick a name from the Angel Tree every year. Winning the “Christmas smile photo”

contest, for which people upload their photos to the mall’s Facebook page, allowed the family to spread their giving. “We don’t need anything,” she said. “It was nice this year that we could do more.” She hopes to teach her son that giving is more important than receiving. “It’s good to show our kids that it’s good to give back to the community,” she said, “and it’s good to show that Christmas isn’t about the presents and it’s not about you. It’s about others.”
A couple of years ago the staff at BMO downtown Chilliwack decided to individually donate $1.00 every payday towards the Salvation Army Christmas Food Bank. What makes this special is not the individual amount but the total amount of $815.70 they have been able to raise over the 2 years on just $1.00 a payday. In the spirit of giving and the joy it brings to us and all of them! Merry Christmas!!!

Free Xmas tree pickup BY TYLER OLSEN tolsen@chilliwacktimes.com

erry Christmas. Now fire up the wood chipper. The City of Chilliwack will begin curbside Christmas tree collection Dec. 27, for those whose garbage would normally have been collected on Christmas Day. Christmas trees will be picked up free for three weeks, ending Jan. 15. Normal curbside pickup days apply, except garbage (and trees) will be collected on Jan. 3 instead of New Year’s Eve. Fire officials urge those who prefer to leave their tree standing for a little while after Christmas to keep their tree green and well watered in order to avoid creating a fire hazard. Fortunately, so far this holiday season, resiCOPS, from page 1 public but for other police officers. It tends to paint us all with the same brush.” Vermeulen said police conducted a “thorough and fast investigation” of Clarke. “The allegation was made Oct. 1. Two-anda-half months later he’s appearing in court to answer to those charges,” Vermeulen said. Clarke has been suspended with pay since Oct. 5. RCMP brass are reviewing the case to determine if he should be suspended without pay, Vermeulen said. T h e c h a rg e d Mo u n t i e w i l l re m a i n suspended pending the outcome of court proceedings and an internal investigation, Vermeulen said. dents have been behaving in an abnormally safe manner, helped in part by new technology. “There have been very few Christmas-related incidents,” assistant fire chief Jeff Ullyot said. “The public has acted in a very safe manner.” Ullyot said residents appear to have gotten the message that extreme caution is required if candles are used—something the fire department discourages. Christmas lights too should not be strung in such a quantity—and plugged into the same outlets—so as to overwhelm circuits. As for Christmas trees, Ullyot said the widespread adoption of energy-efficient LED lights has increased the safety of natural trees. “They don’t produce that much heat,” he said. “The technology we’ve seen with lights— you can’t prove it—but it’s probably been a contributor to better Christmas safety.

Vermeulen said he could not say whether there was any connection between weapons allegedly in possession of Clarke and the Bader family raids. However, Clarke and an RCMP firearmsenforcement officer who initiated the raids and is named in the suit have both started side businesses pursuing the law-enforcement market, the same clientele pursued by Travis Bader’s Silvercore Advanced Training Systems. In the suit, filed in May, Clarke is alleged by the plaintiffs to have participated in unlawful search and arrest, false imprisonment, assault and battery and malicious prosecution.

Council makes Strahl call BY PAUL J. HENDERSON phenderson@chilliwacktimes.com
T
he City of Chilliwack can’t get Health Canada to respond to questions about the federal medical marijuana program so they’ll try the local MP. City council endorsed a resolution at its last meeting to invite Chiliwack-Fraser Canyon MP Chuck Strahl to address the Public Safety Advisory Committee (PSAC) with respect to the licensing and monitoring of medical marijuana grow operations. Mayor Sharon Gaetz said the city is concerned about electricity use, water issues, disposal of fertilizers, fire danger and theft. Gaetz wants the city to restrict the activity using zoning bylaws. At its Dec. 6 meeting, council endorsed a recommendation “that city staff explore the development of a bylaw regarding medicinal marijuana grow operations that would include zoning restrictions.” The recommendation came out of a PSAC meeting during which a bylaw banning medical marijuana in Pitt Meadows was discussed. According to Coun. Chuck Stam, the mayor tried to arrange a meeting with the minister of health in the spring, leading up to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities meeting “to no avail.” “They wouldn’t even send a representative to the committee,” Stam told the Times. “So when that news got back we said, ‘We have an MP that represents us in Ottawa and we need to sit down, not to criticize or chew him out, to sit down and share experiences.’ ” The Times asked Health Canada whether
or not a municipality had the jurisdiction to regulate zoning for federally licensed medical marijuana growers, but no direct response was received. “Health Canada is not involved in the creation of such laws and bylaws by other jurisdictions (provinces, territories, municipalities),” a media relations official wrote via e-mail. “Health Canada is currently considering longer-term measures to reform the Marihuana Medical Access Program and its regulations. In its considerations, the department is focusing on three key objectives: public health, safety and security. . . . Any changes to the program will balance the need to provide legal access to this controlled substance with the government’s responsibility to regulate it.” Any review of the medical marijuana program by Health Canada came as news to Stam. “That’s the first I’ve heard of that,” he said, adding, “That’s refreshing.” Stam said a meeting with Strahl and PSAC was likely to take place in January some time. Pitt Meadows council passed a land use bylaw amendment that outlawed grow operations as home-based businesses in any city zone nor as agricultural operations. The bylaw applies to those with Health Canada licences to grow for other people. But both the existing Pitt Meadows bylaw and anything on Chilliwack’s horizon will likely face constitutional challenges, according to a Vancouver marijuana anti-prohibition organization. Jacob Hunter of the Beyond Prohibition Foundation said if the City of Chilliwack follows the path of Pitt Meadows “it is exposing itself to significant court costs.”

Christmas by the numbers Warning, this column contains math. hristmas is overly commercialized, right? Aside from the conflict over what to call this time of the year—a debate I touched on in a past column and hope to never, ever think of again—the ongoing angst about the cost of Christmas is the other turkey-dinner discussion that has become as regular a holiday feature as uncle Henry’s floppy dentures. I do think Christmas is commercialized. But I’m not about to blame the marketers who take advantage of the season to pitch red and green snuggies. And I’m not even going to blame the parents who buy off their kids with fancy toys. Actually, scratch that. I am going to blame those parents, in part, but not for buying off their kids. Rather, parents, along with teachers, school administrators and all the rest are to blame. I believe—and I use the word “believe” because I have absolutely no data to back up this assertion— that our commercialized Christmas is the result of a race between marketers and the public’s math and logic skills which, unfortunately, the marketers won. Gift cards are the easiest punching bag. When you trade cash for a gift card, you’re making an economically stupid decision. It’s that simple. You’re trading something that can be used anywhere, for something that can be used one place.
C
TYLER OLSEN
Win,Lose orTY And you’re essentially telling the person who receives the card that you don’t trust them to use cash in an appropriate manner. My mom will probably read this and say something like “I want you to have fun with the money, instead of saving it.” She’s wrong. (Sorry, mom! See you on the 25th!) It pains me to use a gift card. (One exception: I bought a card from Subway that actually made economical sense. You got a free sandwich when you bought a $25 gift card, which essentially means you were paying around $22 for a $25 gift card. Subway was essentially paying me a 12 per cent premium to put limits on my cash.) Now math skills may, indeed, be getting better. But they’re not getting better fast enough. Our world has more and more choices and those choices demand the ability to put two and two together. For example, every time I call my credit card company when they try and scam me (breathtakingly often, it seems), they try to scam me (predictable, I know). They pitch me a “balance protection plan.” For a scam-a-licious “monthly premium” of 90 cents on every 100 dollars outstanding on my card, I
would be protected in case I fail to make a payment. The card company’s representatives freak out when you explain to them that the premium is identical to an interest rate hike of 10.8 per cent. “It’s a premium!” they say, their voices rising in pitch. (The protection plan must be very lucrative because I have repeatedly told the representatives never to mention the plan to me. While they have stopped calling my house, but I can’t call their hotline without being pitched the scam.) That plan, is the exact same as a pay day lender who charges $20 for a $200 pay day loan. The $20 is actually 120 per cent annualized interest, thank you very much. But those pay day loans, those credit cards and those gift cards are the stock and trade of the holiday season. Without them our Playstations turn into Play-Doh stations. Unfortunately, our only defence against the marketing madness is math. Not hard math. But real math. Consumers need to be able to distinguish a good Subway gift card from a useless insert-chainhere card. They need to want the card that offers more not because of some consumerist adrenaline rush, but because it actually makes sense. They also need to know what credit is good to use and what is bad. It’s not enough to know that, if you threaten to cancel your credit card, you’ll get a deal. You need to be able to evaluate that deal and, if it stinks, walk away.
or most people, Christmas and its constellation of associated holidays are a frantic time. Time to shop for friends and family, then hunt for deals on Boxing Day. Time to hit the grocery store, maybe the liquor store, to get the ingredients for that perfect holiday feast. For others, unfortunately, it’s time to take advantage of the massive holiday shopping spree. Police everywhere are issuing their usual holiday warnings: lock your car, keep presents in the trunk, watch out for suspicious characters. No matter how careful everyone is, of course, someone’s Christmas memories will be tainted. They’ll remember the broken window, the missing presents, the ransacked car, the police report. We could rant and condemn thieves who cause such pain. But in the spirit of the season, instead we’ll ask them to make a change. No one grows up thinking they’ll spend the holiday season breaking and entering, trading stolen goods for a few dollars or a quick fix. It’s a demeaning, miserable existence, the result of very bad choices, some they made for themselves and some made for them, often at a young age. The good news is that, at this time of year, people are more willing than ever to help when a life needs to be turned around. Our communities are filled with organizations that reach out a helping hand, from government agencies to nonprofits like the Salvation Army’s shelters, to local churches, to food banks. Even the RCMP can help point someone in need of a new direction towards help. Lives have momentum, and turning one fuelled by drugs and crime must feel like trying to turn an ocean liner with a canoe paddle. But others have done it. There are those who know how to chart the course, how to steer through the sharp rocks. This Christmas, if you need help, please ask. If you are asked for help, please give.

The only thing I have been able to do the rest of the day is cry tears of joy because of the tremendous outpouring of love and grace I received. I am not an isolated case, and while my story is true it is also the story of all too many women who have had to flee from domestic violence. Wonderful places like the Ann Davis Transition Society exist because of the belief of so many that we are valuable, responsible women who have been dishonoured and exploited in our homes. I know that, if they could, the Ann Davis Transition Society and other transition houses would increase their staff, housing ability and services. They would offer more services and counselling and certainly at Christmas time when women want nothing more than to give gifts of love and joy to the children, they would provide those resources. I am most fortunate because today I was the recipient of far more than I could ever have imagined or dreamed about. I wish all the women who are out on the streets could receive the help and care I have so they could begin to put their own lives back in order and no longer have to live in fear. Yes, there is a Santa but I call him Ann Davis Transition Society! Merry Christmas to all! Name withheld
Parking lot has much to offer Editor: Re: Parking fine totally wrong, Dec. 21 Times. As manager of Salish pla-
za Shopping Centre I would like to address Mr. Moreno’s letter of Dec. 21 and clear up some misinformation about parking at the plaza. Firstly, none of our parking rules have changed. We have always, and will always, provide free parking for our customers while they are shopping at Salish Plaza. However, some people abuse the system and park in our lot while going to the courthouse, a restaurant, shopping or to work for the day at some nearby location. As we all know, parking downtown is at a premium—one of the growing pains of our growing city. When these people park in our lot there are not enough spaces for customers of the Liquor Store, Price Smart Foods and our other businesses. (CIBC is not actually part of Salish Plaza) Customers often tell us that if they can’t easily find parking where they want they will leave and go elsewhere. Therefore several years ago we hired Diamond Parking Services to look after our lot and enforce rules. Parking rules are clearly stated on signage at every entrance and there are many two-hour Customer Parking signs around the lot. Diamond Parking Services watches for illegal parking in handicapped stalls and fire lanes, for people who park for long periods of time, and people who leave the site to go to the courthouse, restaurants, etc. Their staff have always been very professional and courteous. Sometimes mistakes do happen so any customer who recieves a ticket in error and has a shopping receipt for that

Editor: I still believe in Santa and he paid me a visit at the Ann Davis House in Chilliwack! In my worst nightmares I never thought I would be described as destitute. I came from an upper-middle class family of origin and after marrying the man I thought would be my knight in shining armour, I expected we would live a wonderful life. Over the years the happily ever after story started to turn sour. The castle walls started to crumble, the garden was full of weeds and while not the wicked stepmother, I was actually cast into that role in my family by the way my husband treated me and taught the children to act with me. I started to feel like Rapunzel trapped in the tower because my life was so controlled with being told what to think, where I could go, who I could talk to and how I was to dress and behave. However, I finally summoned the courage to leave because I knew that was the only way my children would have any hope for a future and a mother who was once again a strong, confident woman. The first Christmas away from my children was heartbreaking and I had every reason to believe this year would be a repeat performance. I have, however, just returned from a visit to the Ann Davis Transition Society, where I had spent several weeks looking for the yellow brick road to the Emerald City. What I found, not only during my stay at their transition house, but on a continuing basis through their transition society, is help, compassion, counsel, understanding and knowledgeable people to help me work my way through the maze of legal issues, the swamp of justice muddles and the physical and emotional briar patch of putting my life back together. Today, I do not call myself destitute, though, according to all the cultural and society descriptors, I still am. Today I am richly blessed because of the generosity and warmth of the staff at the Ann Davis Transition Society. I was given Christmas gifts for my children and myself, food and clothing and the warm and caring hugs and wishes

Faith Today BY EVANS HUNDERMARK Mountain View Church
“A
ll I want for Christmas…” “Hark the Herald Angels sing…” Music drifts through our home, signalling the excitement our family feels at Christmas. We love Christmas. We love what it stands for, how it makes us feel, the smells, sounds and sights. The Christmas story grabs our heart afresh every year and I can’t wait to recount it with my family, reminded once again of God’s wonderful and most extravagant expression of His love seen in the face of a baby lying in a manger surrounded by shepherds, kings and everyday people. Our focus, though, is on the first part of the story, the part that tells about the angels, shepherds and wisemen. It’s the story of Mary and
Merry or scary Christmas? Joseph travelling to Bethlehem, finding only a stable for the night where the Saviour of the world would be born. We sing carols about it, have models of the nativity in our home, and Sunday Schools all around the world will re-enact the story this week. We forget about the second part of the story though. It is rarely told yet tells us something about God that is as life transforming as the first part of the story. It is the account of how King Herod, a paranoid and evil ruler, afraid of the threat of the new king that has been born and who then orders every child under the age of two to be killed. An angel warns Mary and Joseph who then
city go without heating, a Christmas meal or experience the death of a loved one. I know this because my dad died at Christmas time. But then again, this is the season of hope. And our hope is found in the second part of the Christmas story as seen above. God knew what was going to happen and prompted Mary and Joseph to escape to Egypt. He is a God who offers escape and hope in times of pain and loss. This escape is found in drawing close to Him and offering your hurt and lack to the God of plenty and restoration, the God of second chances. Christmas need not be only a time of pain or loss for you. It can also be a time
flee to Egypt to protect baby Jesus and escape the horror that is about to follow. “Do you hear what I hear…?” The sounds that filled the air on that first Christmas would not have been the joyful carolling we hear today but the sounds of murder, anguish and loss that thousands would have experienced at the death of their children. There was the sound of Angels singing “Hossanna, Joy to the world…” but there was also the sound of wailing, loss and pain. It is no different at Christmas today. While the vast majority of us are humming to Christmas music there will be with it the sound of pain, death and loss as many in our

when you experience the reality and presence of a God that loves you more than you could ever imagine even in the middle of trying and painful times. “Bah Humbug, I don’t believe in God!” you might say. God’s love for you is not based on your belief in Him though. It is just there and although you may not believe in Him, He believes in you and loves you and wants you to experience the hope, love, joy and peace that only He can bring and which He offers you in abundance. That is what Christmas is about— joy, hope and peace—albeit in a time of loss, lack or pain. God Bless you this Christmas, everyone. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

h, the start of a fresh year. What better time is there to make a pact with oneself to start anew? In the position of a culinary instructor, I encounter many situations with people wanting to improve areas of the culinary arts within their home kitchens and lifestyles. If you are undecided about making a resolution, contemplate making one that focuses on the culinary aspect in your life. The most common culinary resolution would be one of dietetic boundaries. Many people have the aspiration to start the New Year with a promise of either losing weight or getting in better physical shape. The change in what you consume on a daily basis will obviously influence your success, or lack thereof. Try making a resolution to yourself to investigate low-fat, low-carbohydrate, and/or high-protein cooking. This promise will involve educating yourself in these areas, and putting the acquired information into practice. Go to the library, research on the Internet, buy a cookbook and take a cooking class. Maybe a more suited resolution would be to revamp the state of your pantry and the food supply in your kitchen. Perhaps you have always wanted to have a pantry that is more focused on your favorite cuisines. For example, someone who loves Italian and Greek cuisine would stock their pantry with varying types of olives, capers, tomatoes, grape leaves, olive oils, balsamic vinegars, etc. The refrigerator and freezer can also be co-ordinated
CHEF DEZ
On Cooking to contain the perishables of the same cuisine. Motivation to focus more on cooking certain cuisines in your household will start with having the ingredients at your fingertips. One can even take this to the extreme in organization by creating labels and segregating areas in your pantry for different food groupings. The simplest of all culinary resolutions however, would be to blow dust off your cookbooks and start making some new dishes. Whether it is of small or large proportions, we all have collections of cookbooks, with many of them going unused. Make it a goal in your home to open up a cookbook once or twice a week and try a new recipe. If you choose to do this, make sure you are setting yourself up for success. Decide on and investigate the recipe prior to the day you plan on making it. Purchase the ingredients ahead of time, and ensure that you have the basic equipment and utensils necessary to successfully complete the task at hand. This will help eliminate any stress that you may encounter during preparation. “Attitude is everything.” This is the best advice I can give you. Whatever you approach in life, from making a resolution to making new friends or making a new recipe, proceed in a
positive fashion. You will always find what you are searching for. If you look for the positives in something or someone, you will always find them. The same applies if you are seeking out negatives. Be aware of what you are looking for and your experience will always be more rewarding. Dear Chef Dez: I noticed in your “Healthy Choices” class, you mention that you had a significant weight loss years ago within a six-month period. How did you do it? Tony R. Abbotsford Dear Tony: I did this by exercising and limiting fat grams—I didn’t count calories. The more lean muscle mass a body has, the more calories the body will burn – even when sleeping. Therefore, going to the gym is extremely important. Calories are energy and too many times prior I wasted my efforts limiting them too extensively in my total food intake. Without enough calories in my diet, I never had enough energy to maintain a regular exercise program. Please keep in mind that I am not a dietician or medical professional. Everybody is different and I believe that a successful method exists for everyone. Send your food/cooking questions to dez@chefdez.com or P.O. Box 2674, Abbotsford, B.C. V2T 6R4. THE ROAD RULES
Cedric Hughes
Many factors contribute to cultural shifts: proliferating scientific proof, changes in the law, advocacy, changes in media focus, celebrity testimonials supporting the shift, and the opposite—celebrity misbehaviour that highlights harm—and personal anecdotes. Anti-drinking and driving laws pre-dated the cultural shift to intolerance for impaired driving. People may not like the new rules in BC imposing immediate administrative penalties for a roadside .05 blood alcohol reading, but surveys show overwhelming support for ‘being tough’ on drunk drivers. Laws requiring seat belts and infant car seats followed the development of these proven safety features by the car manufacturers. Now, not wearing a seat belt is generally regarded as just plain old ‘dumb’ and not securing your children according to the latest car seat requirements negligent parenting. Of course a few readers will disagree with these characterizations. But not the vast majority—hence ‘a cultural shift.’ Speed limits and intersection controls are age-old driving rules with a more problematic cultural resonance. It is probably fair to say that while most drivers know that driving too fast is a factor in most crashes, they will also admit that they regularly drive over the
limit if only to keep up with the traffic flow. In other words, they generally regard ‘the limits’ more as guidelines than limits, and speeding tickets as a stroke of undeserved ‘bad luck’.
It is also probably fair to say that most drivers know that navigating through intersections is much riskier than navigating a straight Barrister & Solicitor road and that obeying intersection controls is basic self-protective driving behaviour. As such, mounting evidence of more disobedience of intersection controls is puzzling, to say the least. In light of these observations on current cultural attitudes about driving behaviours, the highly publicized results of the early December police ‘crackdown’ on road safety are disturbing but not wholly disheartening. The statistics were compiled over four days throughout the lower mainland—December 3rd to 6th. Police spokespersons described the total number of tickets for seatbelt infractions, excessive speeding, intersection infractions and the number of immediate suspensions for impaired driving as “astounding” and “appalling.” They offered no explanations, not even a comment that increased enforcement usually ‘nets more fish.’ If anything they sounded perplexed and frustrated. “The public is not getting the message,” they said. But this may be just one interpretation. At least parts of ‘the message’ have been heard loudly and clearly. The outlook of crash, fatality, and injury trends are in fact mostly positive. Cultural shifts take time. That the above result was a lead story on television news and in the newspapers speaks to our collective awareness and concern. The key point may be: the media and the average driver are on side with the police reaction. Cedric Hughes L.L.B. Leslie McGuffin L.L.B.

Culinary resolutions for 2011
There are many examples of narrowly held contrarian views becoming mainstream, gradually or otherwise. Anti-smoking crusaders ‘cried in the wilderness’ for years; today smoking is culturally intolerable and widely banned— in some places even smoking outside is prohibited. To smoke in another person’s house or car without their express permission, indeed even to ask is taboo.

Consistently inconsistent Bruins Habscheid likes what he sees from Brandon Magee BY TYLER OLSEN tolsen@chilliwacktimes.com
A
s the Chilliwack Bruins go into a brief hibernation over the Christmas season, things are looking up for coach Marc Habscheid’s crew. Given, however, the Bruins inability to string together more than two consecutive wins so far this year, the key will be keeping them up. For Habscheid, though, the recent road trip through Alberta bodes well for the new year as the Bruins make a playoff push in the ultracompetitive Western Conference. For one, the Bruins’ goaltending was rock solid. “I think through the first half of the year there’s been a little bit of inconsistency there and that’s not a good thing because that’s the most important position on your team,” said Habscheid from his home in Swift Current, Sask. Backup Braden Gamble, who had been used only sparingly by Habscheid, put together two solid outings. He was followed by Lucas Gore, who made roughly a gazillion saves in the final two games before the break.
“I think in the road trip, especially from Medicine Hat forward, I liked how our goaltenders played.” With nearly half a season under his belt, Habscheid has also got the chance to evaluate some of his newer players. Through training part and the first three months of the season, the Bruins added enough players to fill out two whole lines. Of the six, four— Mike Forsyth, Steve Oursov, Curt Gogol and T.C. Cratsenberg—had substantial junior hockey experience, while two more—Steven Hodges and Brandon Magee—came in as raw, 16-year-old rookies. Gogol—the newest of the bunch—has been “a good team” who has also filled in on the injury-ravaged blue line. Oursov has brought energy, experience and the ability to play in all three forward positions, on the power play and on the penalty killing. Cratsenberg “works hard and plays a simple straight up and down game,” according to Habscheid. And Forsyth does much of the same; the coach credited him for his penalty killing prowess against the Edmonton Oil Kings last week. Hodges, in his debut year
takes to win and be able to push yourself, that’s the real important part of the game.”
Bruin forward Brandon Magee has earned high praise from coach Marc Habscheid. in the WHL has shown the skills that made him a firstround pick in the bantam draft. Habscheid doesn’t hand out praise lightly. So his praise of Magee, who has filled in on the Bruins’ second line and seen regular power play time, is positively effusive. “Magee’s been good, he’s come in, for a 16-year-old he has a presence, he’s com-
petitive, he has a lot of will to win. For a 16-year-old that’s pretty impressive,” he told the Times. Through31games,Magee’s notched six goals, 13 points and, with a plus/minus rating of plus-six, is tied for first on the team alongside occasional linemates Jamie Crooks and Kevin Sundher. Despite standing just fivefoot-seven, he hasn’t let himself be pushed around. He’s

amassed 46 penalty minutes, including two fights. “That’s just his competitive nature and those are the things you have to find out as an organization before the draft, those intangibles,” said Habscheid. “The intangibles really are everything because you can have a lot of skill and look flashy out there but unless you have that winner’s mentality and the ability to do what it
Back to the game’s roots While in Alberta, the Bruins mixed things up, practising and speedskating at the Calgary Oval and making a trip to the tiny hometown of alumnus Colton Grant. This is the second year that Habscheid has taken his players to a tiny rink on the prairies. Skating in Grant’s home rink in Standard, Alta.—a town of less than 300 people where a major employer is a liquid fertilizer producer— was meant to take the Bruins back to the roots of the game. “They’re used to playing in beautiful rinks and stuff and that’s not really where hockey was born and grown and that’s not where you learned the basics of the game; and the basics of the game was playing it because you loved it and a lot of the things you learned about the game you learned from small towns and small rinks,” said Habscheid, who hopes the experience teaches his young charges a personal lesson about both hockey and life. “It gives them the sense of the grassroots of the game and the people coming out and supporting it and the love in the game in small towns.”

Howse became only the fifth player in Bruins history to sign with a National Ho c k e y L e a g u e c l u b, joining the ranks of Oscar Moller, Mark Santorelli, Nick Holden and Brandon Manning. Howse’s two-way, threeyear contract, announced by the Flames Tuesday, is worth $1.92 million, according to capgeek.com, a website that tracks NHL contracts, and could see the 19-year-old Prince George native take in an average of $67,000 a year playing in the AHL or $640,000 a year in the NHL. The Flames selected Howse in the third round (74th overall) at the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. Burgess charged in robberies
GOLD! RINGS!
A
Chilliwack man has been charged in connection to two recent credit union robberies. Michael Dustin Burgess, 26, appeared in provincial court Monday to face two counts of robbery. Burgess was remanded in custody. Burgess is charged with robbing the Prospera Credit Union on Highway 9 in Agassiz on Nov. 26. He is also charged with robbing the
Wellington Avenue Prospera branch on Dec. 9 in Chilliwack. “Robberies are very serious crimes and are investigated aggressively,” said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop. “In this case teamwork between the Chilliwack and Agassiz RCMP, along with excellent witnesses information in the early stages of both investigation lead to the identification and arrest of the suspect.”

Join up for art classes at brand new arts facility
T
his New Year’s why not make a creative resolution and take a class put on by the Chilliwack Community Arts Council. Get ready to learn some great moves while getting in shape with one of many dance classes. Learn the basics of Indian folk dance in a Bhangra class, which is high in energy and full of fun upbeat moves. Students will be inspired by the passion and rhythm of the Latin dance class, for which no partner is required. The longest running class, Middle Eastern dance, is back again to teach the art of belly dancing in a total body workout that engages the mind and spirit. For students 50-and-over, a gentle cardio dance class will be on offer for the first time. This will spice up a exercise routine while teaching simple dance choreography. Also new to the roster is the swing dance class, instructed by Abbotsford’s popular Suburban Swing, with a special focus on East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop and Balboa. If dance isn’t your thing, try your hand at one of the painting, drawing, or digital art classes being offered for kids and adults: watercolour and acrylic painting, drawing, and kids mixed media. Also on offer are 3D computer animation for those 10-and-up
and intro to digital photography for 17-andover. Got a child that enjoys the spotlight? Sign them up for youth theatre. Children will explore their imaginations with costumes, props, role playing, creating their own skits and improvisation. Sign up kids for some messy fun with “Come Get Messy.” Parents can bring their kids in for a variety of arts, crafts and plain old messy fun. Instructor Stephanie is happy to handle the mess so you don’t have to. (Ages three to six.) For the less messy-minded child there will be also be one-day craft workshops as well. For those adults not afraid to get a little messy, there is a great variety of hands-on ceramic arts classes including wheel throwing 1 and 2 and hand building 1. There is also build-by-hand pottery for seniors (50-plus) who love clay. No previous experience necessary. Students will learn simple construction techniques such as coil, slab and pinch pot as well as staining and glazing techniques. Classes will be taking place in the new Chilliwack Cultural Centre—an exciting new facility for the whole community that the Chilliwack Community Arts Council will help to program along with Chilliwack Academy of Music, and Chilliwack Arts and Cultural Centre Society.

Theatre workshop in Abby
If you want to expand your theatrical horizons and further develop your performance, directing or writing skills, then attend Gallery 7 Theatre’s 2010/2011 Workshop Series. The third workshop is “Playwriting” with Vancouver playwright Lucia Frangione: sharpen those pencils and get those thinking caps on. Here’s your chance to learn from a living, breathing (and produced) playwright from Vancouver. Learn how to brainstorm, pre-write, develop characters, write dialogue, prepare a script for performance and more. This workshop is perfect for writers looking for input on an existing work, for writers who may be thinking about writing a play and for writers looking to expand their general skills. Lucia is one of Canada’s leading playwrights and is acclaimed for her plays including Espresso, Holy Mo! and Caribou Magi. Runs Jan. 15 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (six hours). All workshops are held at the MEI Secondary School, 4081 Clearbrook Rd., Abbotsford, and are recommended for ages 14 and up. For more information, or to register, please call the theatre at 604504-5940 or go to their web-
site at www.gallery7theatre. com. Cost for one workshop is $65, two workshops is $110.50 and cost for all four workshops is $182.
Harrison Memorial Hall
The Harrison Festival Society celebrates the opening of the newly renovated Memorial Hall with four concerts between Jan. 22 and March 11. The Festival Society is very excited about the work that has been done in this community facility. With a fresh look, a forced air heating system and new washrooms, the hall will be a much nicer concert experience. First up on Jan. 22 is the Russell Jackson Blues Band. Born in Memphis and moved to Canada in 1990, award-winning bluesman Russell Jackson is a highly regarded bandleader and bass player who played with the B.B. King Orchestra for more than seven years. Other shows include: Joaquin Diaz on Feb. 12; The Paperboys on Feb. 26; and the April Verch Band on March 11. All shows are in the Harrison Memorial Hall, with doors opening at 7:30 p.m. and the shows beginning at 8 p.m. Beginning Jan. 1 the ticket price for the society’s music concerts will be $22. However, if purchased before the New Year the cost is only $20. Tickets are available at 604-796-3664 or online at harrisonfestival.com. Looking for that perfect Christmas gift? Nothing is better than the gift of live music. If you don’t know which show someone would prefer, gift certificates are also available. Call the festival office at 604 796-3664 for gift certificates.

Birthday Greetings
February 25, 1945 ~ December 19, 2010
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret Rita D Souza. Her nine-month struggle with cancer came to an end on December 19th, 2010 at Cascade Hospice, surrounded by her family and loved ones. She is survived by her husband of 40 years, Allan; her eldest daughter, Elaine Reitsma (Chris); her only son, Paul (Rhianna); her youngest daughter, Siobhan; and her two grandchildren Adrienne and Darien Reitsma; all from Chilliwack. She is also survived by her sisters, Ann Brennan (Mick) and Mary O Loughlin (Gerry), and her brothers, Willie and Paddy (Peggy) Powell, all from Ireland. She was predeceased by her mother, Mary Powell, her brother, Gerard Powell, and her father, Patrick Powell. We are sure that they took her hand to guide her to heaven, just as we had to let go of it here on earth. Rita was born in County Clare, Ireland on February 25th, 1945. In 1964, she completed her nursing training in England and won the honor of being the youngest Head Nurse in the Greater London area. She met her husband, Allan in 1967 when he made an unfortunate trip to her emergency room. They were married in England in 1970. In 1973, 3 months after the birth of their first child, Elaine, they moved to Chilliwack, and have resided here ever since. Two more children, Paul, and Siobhan, followed over the next 6 years. Rita s life revolved around her children and great efforts were made to ensure they had every opportunity. For a number of years, Rita was an active member of the Chilliwack Academy of Music Board of Directors. When her children were grown, Rita put her nursing training back to use as a care aide at The Waverly Retirement Home, formerly known as Grosvenor House . We would like to say a huge thank you to all those who ve surrounded our family, and particularly our mom, with their love, kindness, and prayers over the last year. A special thank you to the Cascade Hospice for their extra special care of Rita. An evening prayer service for Rita will be held at 7:00pm on Monday, December 27th and her funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, December 28th at 11:00am, both at Saint Mary s Catholic Church. There will be a reception after the funeral service at St. Mary s Church Hall. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Rita s name to the Chilliwack Hospice Society http://www.chilliwackhospice.org/donations.html; The Canadian Diabetes Society; Caring Bridge - http://www. caringbridge.org/donate; or a charity of your choice.
Happy Birthday

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: Be ambitious – show talents, display support for others, work hard, protect projects, but launch new ideas, ventures Thursday onward, not before. Sunday will be chore-filled. Relationships loom in importance Monday/Tuesday, but friction is more prevalent than harmony. Realize this is not your decade to win wars – battles maybe, not wars. (On the other hand, you can hop on an elevator of accomplishment if you co-operate.) Deep changes, finances, intimacy and health factors head for a successful conclusion Wednesday to Friday. Delays end! Saturday’s gentle, happy and wise! Taurus April 20-May 20: Wider understanding, compassion, love, far travel, legal matters, advertising, statistics, insurance, religion, concepts, higher education – these come to the fore. Life feels more serene. Still, there are numerous problems Sunday to Wednesday morning – in these very areas. These are complex, subtle problems, in which solutions and causes seem to mingle. Your best approach, unless you have a clear idea, is to sit and wait it out. Recent delays end by Thursday, so you can march forth in relationships, love, negotiations and contracts this day forward. Friday morning’s lucky for these! Gemini May 21-June 20: Mysteries, secrets, psychological depths, intimacy, sexual yearnings, subconscious promptings, large finances, investments and debt, lifestyle changes and commitments – these fill your days over the weeks ahead. Don’t start anything (especially in these areas) before Thursday. You would get caught in an eternal circling around a problem. But Thursday onward promises success. (However, realize this is not a big investment year, with the exception of investment in your own career/ business.) Health matters are significant for several weeks. Enlist a doctor, if needed. Relationships please Saturday.

Cancer June 21-July 22: The accent lies on relationships, agreements, negotiations, relocation, opportunities, dealings with the public, and love. This area has become the prime one of your life, and will remain so to at least 2024. You’ve already discovered that others are more stubborn, yet more attractive than they were last decade, and that you must change to accommodate them. Another hint of this arrives Sunday. The choice is love or alienation: nothing in-between. Arguments might arise to midweek (Wednesday). Be diplomatic! Romance, exciting meetings arise Wednesday to Friday. Woo someone! Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Start no important projects, buy nothing significant, before Dec. 30. An old flame might appear this week or next, but it’s almost too late, sort of “life’s afterthought.” Your home continues to be sweet, affectionate. The end of this month and early January will favour re-decorating or purchasing property. “Vaguely” schedule that now, put aside the time. Happiness and social delights visit Sunday/ Monday. You might receive a loving message. A prospective relationship offers good romance, bad marriage. Leave commitment decisions for 2011. A month of work and health issues begins Tuesday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Sweet love and a winning streak fill the weeks ahead! If single, you’ll definitely be attracted to someone. An “instant wedding” could occur. However, realize two things: one, anyone first met (or affair begun) Sunday through Wednesday will always contain jealousy or resentment; and two, in general, loves begun between 2004 and next March (2011) will tend toward unpredictable surprises and sudden changes. Take care with money Monday/ Tuesday. Friends, travel and communications veer toward success Thursday/Friday. Home, family, or an intimate crowd please you most Friday eve, Saturday.
★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Delays end Thursday. Don’t start anything before then. This week and the next few nudge you into domestic surroundings and a restful stance. Various problems arise Sunday to Wednesday. You might decide to end a relationship. This is complex, with pluses and minuses. If you feel a calm, quiet disappointment about this situation, that’s your answer. Sunday provides one more clue that this decade focuses on a deep, major change of home. That might be a change of address, or other change. It’s necessary, so flow with it. Chase money Thursday through Friday morning: your luck’s high! Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Don’t start any projects or relationships before Thursday. Communications, travel, casual friendships, paperwork and details fill this week and the next few – they will transform this entire decade. Shorter-term, problems and flaws become apparent in these Sunday to Wednesday, connected to work issues or more private, secret shortcomings. Well, work with a good heart. By Wednesday p.m. your energy and charisma rise, and you’re headed toward success, harmony, even love, by Friday daytime! Friday night and Saturday are easy, sensual, good for spending and wooing (not necessarily linked). Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: The weeks ahead feature money, earnings, spending, selling, possessions and rote learning. A major change rolls slowly through this zone all this decade and half of next. You can build a castle of money! Sunday holds a clue, probably involving your career, ambitions or status. You’re happy Monday to Wednesday, but you face problems and barriers in money and social wishes: be patient. Though you’re tired Thursday/Friday, luck accompanies government or school applications, spiritual and charity efforts. Your energy and charisma rise in time for a New Year’s party! Recent delays end.
604-795-4417
Dec. 26 - Jan. 1 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Your energy, charisma and confidence surge – for a few weeks. But don’t start anything before Thursday. Until then, handle two concerns: one, you must decide between ending or investing further (more time/effort) in a particular ambition or career direction. If you can’t decide, wait until Thursday/Friday, when you’ll get a lucky glimpse of your future, and how to get there. The second concern is more important, and centres on Sunday: your entire “self” is changing: what you want, and want to be. Think this through Sunday, ponder, take your thoughts seriously. All is good! Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Continue to lie low, rest and contemplate for the few weeks ahead. You’ll deal with government agencies, institutions or charitable agencies. Be spiritual. Plan for the future – but don’t make any plans before Thursday. Sunday to Wednesday contains a few subtle hints that your inner world needs transformation. Perhaps your inner anger doesn’t “fit” your larger sense of right and wrong. What’s out of kilter? Be ambitious Thursday through Friday morning – your efforts could end with a stroke of luck! Your social side and optimism emerge just in time for New Years! Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Wishes come true, flirtations invite you and your popularity rises – this week and the next couple. Plans and optimism hover around money and possessions. However, proceed cautiously before Thursday – start nothing, not even a relationship. And realize your hopes and your “net worth” are not in agreement – and “net worth” has the final say. Your hopes need a revision, as Sunday will show (subtly or not). When your view turns unselfish, turns to wider topics such as real love, true luck and success enter – Thursday into Friday morning. Saturday’s ambition is achievable! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
