inistry of Forests firefighters have snuffed out two small fires that broke out this week in the Chilliwack River Valley. Both fires—one at Centre Creek, 34 kilometres up the valley, the other just off Chilliwack River Road, 22 kilometres up the valley—were quickly brought under control by firefighters and air support after they were reported Monday. “We did action with air tankers and bucketing to minimize the risk of spread on those fires,” said fire information officer Mike McCulley. Both blazes were about 3.5 hectares in size and neither threatened any structures. McCulley said both fires are in patrol stage now, which means crews have been pulled off the sites and no new growth is occurring. Crews completed infra-red scans of both sites Thursday morning. The cause of the two fires is still under investigation, although McCulley said the two fires were definitely human-caused because there were no lightning strikes in the area. Fred McConnell, who stopped at the Chilliwack Road fire on Monday to snap some photographs, said fire crews on the scene were taking photos of vehicle licence plates and were on the lookout for a red car.

River valley blazes broke out on Monday, but now under control

The fires caught the eye of more than a couple people in the valley. When Kris Sanders, who operates a non-profit camp at Chilliwack Lake, arrived at his camp on Monday, he saw the lake valley filled with smoke. Sanders had driven to the camp with a gas-fired water pump. He took a boat out to investigate the source but only found more and more smoke, which had evidently blown down the valley from one of the fires. Sanders is reminding campers of

the fire bans currently in place for the entire Coastal Fire Centre and to be careful of anything that can cause sparks. “Any dropped cigarette or muffler dragging makes sparks.” Worringly, Sanders said people often camp along Chilliwack Lake in non-designated boat-accessible spots. He said they sometimes have fires, even when bans are currently in place, although no such fires were reported last week. “The forest is dry, dry,” he said.

Upfront Long weekend crackdown The Upper Fraser Valley’s eight-member seasonal policing unit will be out in full force this long weekend, keeping an eye out for liquor, drugs and unsafe drivers on both the roads and local waterways. So far this year the unit has handed out 922 violation and tickets throughout the region, mostly for driving infractions. It’s also made 133 liquor charges, 278 liquor seizures, 20 drug-related seizures. Thirty-six drivers have been handed 24-hour suspensions while 13 more have been charged with impaired driving. The unit has also given out “122 boat-safety warnings” and issued four boat safety-related charges. The RCMP will be conducting vehicle and boat checks all weekend.

f you go out in the woods today you’re in for a big surprise, especially if those woods are near Island 22. Throughout the long weekend, the park will be overrun by medieval knights, maidens, crafters and bards during the first ever Barony of Lionsgate Tournament of Armies. Battles between costumed warriors armed with rattan swords will rage in forest, open plain, bog and ravine for two days while medieval artisans match wits in bardic, heraldic and scribal battles closer to camp. The tournament is organized by the Lower Mainland branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), an international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17thcentury Europe. The group has over 30,000 members worldwide who spend their

“This is just what we do. We don’t go scuba diving. When we go camping, we bring swords.” The “known world” of the SCA is divided into kingdoms, principalities, baronies and shires that correspond to the real world. Although Barony of Lionsgate, which is hosting the Island 22 event, incorporates Lower Mainland

municipalities, members of the local SCA chapter – the Shire of Lionsdale – will also be out in full force. The reigning prince and princess of the larger Principality of Tir Righ, which covers B.C. and parts of Washington, are actually a couple of Chilliwack school teachers, Quentin and Elizabeth Baker, known as Ieuan and Gwyneth Gower in the SCA world. Quentin Baker, who got involved in the SCA in his university days 10 years ago, now finds that his hobby comes in handy in his middle-school classroom at Sto:lo Alternate. “I have a lot of props I can bring in,” he said, “so when we’re talking about medieval times I can actually bring in things to make it a little more real, a little more interesting.” This weekend Baker will play a dual role. He will hold court from his throne as the reigning prince, dispensing awards to those who kneel before him, and he will fight as an armed combatant in one of the armies vying for supremacy. Although the Tournament of Armies is a closed event not designed to accommodate spectators, the SCA also hosts numerous events open to the public. Son tried to save father from fatal fire BY TYLER OLSEN tolsen@chilliwacktimes.com

ire officials say the man injured in a mobile home fire Monday afternoon was hurt in a desperate attempt to save his father, who perished in the blaze. Assistant fire chief Ian Josephson said the son “did try and get his father out of the trailer, and I think there was just too much heat and smoke. “Quite frankly, he barely made it out himself.” When firefighters from four halls arrived on the scene a little after 1 p.m., they found the 49-yearold son outside the home. He was treated by paramedics and taken to hospital with smoke- and burnrelated injuries. Upon entering the home, firefighters found the body of the 69-year-old father in the living

room. The two men lived together in the Unsworth Road trailer along with two cats and a dog, which also died in the blaze. RCMP spokesperson Cpl. LeaAnne Dunlop said the son “is expected to make a full recovery.” Fire officials investigating the scene have determined that the cause of the fire is not suspicious. Jo s e p h s o n s a i d i n v e s t i g a t o r s have determined that the fire was probably either started by smoking m a t e r i a l ( i . e. a n a c c i d e n t a l l y dropped cigarette) or an electrical overheating or spark. “It wasn’t a good situation,” said Josephson of the fire in the 32-yearold trailer. “There was some wood panelling and other factors that come into play on these older trailers,” he said. There was also no sign of a working

A Covanta Energy incinerator the Mowachaht/Muchalaht First Nation want to present Penner with a petition of support from 318 residents. The proposal by Gold River fits with Metro’s secondary position, which is to send garbage to an incinerator out of region. Anderson hopes Metro will consider barging its trash to Gold River. “We know there’s still a bidding process, but we’re so far ahead,” said Anderson, pointing to the environmental approval Covanta has received for the project. Then there is Belkorp Environmental Services Ltd., which operates the Cache Creek landfill. Months ago the company pointed out that the Village of Cache Creek and the Ashcroft and Bonaparte Indian bands support the idea of continuing to use the landfill. The dump was slated to close in 2012 until it was granted an environmental assessment certificate in January that would add between 17 and 25 years to its life. Services completed a test of a fully-loaded transport truck fueled by liquefied natural gas (LNG) on the heavily-travelled 250-kilometre trip between Vancouver and Cache Creek to demonstrate a cleaner-burning, loweremission solution to the diesel trucks that currently ship the trash. There was even an innovative proposal to attempt to acquire the natural gas to fuel the vehicles from the landfill site itself, by capturing and purifying biogas generated by the decomposition at the dump. Starting Monday July 19th, the speed limits on the Trans Canada (Highway 1) have been lowered to protect the construction workers on the Gateway construction project which extends from the Cassiar interchange approximately 37 kilometers east to the 208th street intersection in Langley. Cedric Hughes From Cassiar to the Grandview interchange the speed limit drops to 70 kmh; from Grandview to 208th Street to 80 kmh. Speeding fines are higher in construction zones. Over the limit by 20 kmh attracts a $196 fine instead of a $138 fine; over by up to 40 kmh a $253 fine instead of a $196 fine; over by 40 kmh a $360 fine; and over by 60 kmh a $468 fine. These changes are expected to remain in effect until the project is completed in 2013. Reports of these changes have noted that, practically speaking, commuters over the Port Mann Bridge should not find much, if any, change in their commute times. Westbound traffic is jammed “16 hours a day,” says Cpl. James Cheung of the RCMP’s highway division. “It’s impossible to go over the speed limit [during the day].” Enforcement efforts will concentrate on evenings when night shifts are working on the project, the traffic has thinned out, and speeding becomes a tempting possibility. Or some might say an act of go-with-the-flow self-preservation. How many drivers, we wonder, have found that actually sticking to the speed limit can be a challenging? Such a question should not be construed as a caution against doing so. Articulate arguments against ‘too low speed limits’ and ‘extreme enforcement’, and for go-

According to Leonard Evans, an internationally renowned traffic safety expert, case-control studies comparing the speeds of cars involved in crashes, (or case cars), to the speeds of control cars not involved in crashes have shown “that risk (of a crash)… increases Barrister & Solicitor steeply as speeds exceed the 60 km/h speed limit, approximately doubling for each additional 5 km/h.” For example, with a 50 Km/h speed limit, “the risk at 80 km/h is 30 times the risk (compared to) driving at the speed limit.” Leonard Evans also notes that another approach to examining the relationship between speed and risk “is to relate changes in aggregate casualties on selected roads to changes in the average speed of the traffic on these roads.” Swedish studies comparing casualty rates before and after changes in speed limits on many (mainly higher speed limit) roads in Sweden found that “speed increases lead to …[higher] risk of crashing, risk of serious injury, if a crash occurs, risk of death, if a serious injury occurs.” These results were echoed at the time of the lowering of the maximum speed limit on US rural Interstates to 55 mph in response to the October 1973 oil embargo. Evans noted, “Prior to the change, the speed limits on rural Interstates were nearly all 70 mph… Average travel speed was observed to be 63.4 mph. After imposition of the 55 mph limit, the observed speed declined to 57.6 mph, a seemingly modest 5.8 mph drop…. However, a sharp drop in the fatality rate occurred.”

e t r o Va n c o u v e r politicians were scheduled to vote on Friday on a plan to build a garbage incinerator in the region, a plan Mayor Sharon Gaetz and other Fraser Valley politicians have vocally opposed for months. Last week, Metro’s solid waste committee recommended building at least one trash incinerator in the region despite widespread opposition from Fraser Valley municipal and provincial politicians concerned about increased pollution in an already fragile airshed. Even some Metro mayors, including Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson, oppose the plan. The Metro board members and senior staffers that have pushed the idea of burning more than one million tonnes of waste a year were undaunted by the opposition heard during consultation meetings held over recent months. But beyond the Lower Mainland opposition to dealing with Metro’s trash within Metro, there are municipalities and corporations clamouring for the garbage. The remote Vancouver Island community of Gold River and area First Nations are using social media to send a message to Environment Minister Barry Penner in support of the option of sending the garbage by barge to a proposed incinerator on the island to be built by U.S. company Covanta Energy. With no more than 20 students per class and each class assigned a teacher and an educational assistant, the program allows for focused, one-on-one reading help. “You’re able to work more intensely and more often with small groups of students and to focus specifically on individual skills and individual needs,” said co-ordinator Vanessa Pierson, who has

Students who have attended the program are tracked once they return to their regular classrooms, and the extra summer help seems to be paying off by the time they reach to the end of Grade 2. “It’s interesting because we don’t find that very many of them are fully meeting Grade 1 by the end of the session,” said Wiebe, “but it’s clearly giving them enough of a boost that, by the end of Grade 2, 60 per cent of them are.” Rec ‘n’ Rec costs about $30,000 to run each summer, but with Envision chipping in $10,000 every year and some of the remaining $20,000 recovered from the province because it falls into the category of summer learning, Wiebe said the program costs the district very little.

or about 60 local students going in to Grade 2 this September, summer has only just begun. Instead of leaving classrooms behind in June, they have just finished honing their reading skills at this year’s Read ’n‘ Rec program, a three-week summer literacy program put on by the Chilliwack school district with funding from Envision Financial. Better known among students as “reading camp,” Read ’n‘ Rec, now in its sixth year, combines two hours of reading instruction with one hour of supervised physical activity. The program was set up to help students who struggle with reading in Grade 1. Instead of focusing on kids who need serious intervention, however, it targets those whom teachers have identified as meeting about half of the grade-level expectations in literacy by the end of the year. “It’s a support program more than it is an intervention program,” said Ruth Wiebe, the school district’s director of instruction. Ideally Read ’n‘ Rec organizers would like to see all participants fully meet Grade 1 literacy expectations by the end of the session, but the real goal of the program is

Chilliwack MLA and former mayor John Les was cleared of criminal wrongdoing in connection with the land deals in question. McFee determined the pro-development philosophy of Les and city council

at the time encouraged staff to look at government regulations and city bylaws as “guidelines only” with the goal of finding creative ways to “make development happen,” but that there was not a likelihood of convicting Les of breach of trust. Two of the three charges facing Sanborn are connected to Les’s Rosebank develop-

ment. The allegations are that in approving the subdivision of properties for the development, Sanborn “failed to fulfill his public duty as an approving officer.” The third charge relates to a project built by prominent current developer and former township alderman Eldon Unger. Sanborn is alleged to have approved the Chilliwack Mountain subdivision, The Trails at Longthorn Creek, without requiring Unger to comply with Ministry of the Environment conditions to enter into restrictive covenants for flood protection reasons.

Census uproar a red herring

urprises still come my way, even after I’ve been resident on this globe for 53 years. For instance, in our little backyard pond, the goldfish disappeared about two months ago. Gone. Not a sign of any of them, large or small. The cursed blue heron was blamed, since he was seen occasionally drooling at water’s edge. Then last Sunday the fish magically reappeared, hale and hearty (and a little hungry), having hibernated I guess, under a rock. A pleasant surprise, the kind that is always welcome. But the big surprise last week was the torqued-up reaction to making the census long form voluntary. I’ve read through the commentary, and seen some of it on the TV news. Basically, if I listened and believed half of it, making the census long form voluntary is the end of the free world. One sage wrung his hands and suggested that if Canada makes it voluntary, then the rest of the world (quelle horreur!) may follow suit! Other levels of government will no longer know where to put the next bus route or when to plow snow. The teachers won’t know how many students are in their classes and the sun may come up in the west. The business community will be paralyzed by indecision, because they consult the long form results (from years ago) before they pick the colours in the executive washrooms. If I believed half of it, statistically speaking, Canada will cease to

What no one acknowledges is that the long form will still be used, it just won’t be mandatory, and you won’t be fined, jailed or harassed if you fail to fill it out. I suspect most recipients will fill it out as usual, and the info garnered will be just fine. Just in case people want to be subject to fines or jail time, the federal Liberals are making it a campaign promise. Fill it out, or it’s a $500 fine, jail time, or both. These guys are geniuses, 27 per cent of the time, 19 times out of 20. Making it “mandatory” is a lark anyway. I spoke to a constituent the other day who related his story: “I got the long form last time, but I didn’t feel comfortable filling out the section about my income. I figure Revenue Canada already has that info, so I left it blank and sent it in. A week later, my neighbour—who was one of thousands of people temporarily hired by StatsCan to chase after guys like me—called and told me my income info was blank and I’d have to tell him what it was, and

where it came from! This was my neighbour, hired by StatsCan. “Needless to say, I told him nothing. What’s more, I was so peeved by the implied threats that I filled in my source of income/ occupation as ‘professional singer’ (he’s not). And I plan to put ‘piano player’ on the form if they ask me again.” How many people, I wonder, jazz up their answers because they don’t want to share their real personal info with anyone, especially the government? (I’m guessing it’s why there are almost 400,000 Jedi Knights in England and Wales according to the last British census, making it the fourth largest religion in the Kingdom.) I do know that over the years my office gets inundated with complaints during census time, especially from seniors who understandably don’t appreciate being threatened by their own government. So the census will go on, it will be filled out by Canadians who happily see it as part of their civic duty, and the angry calls will cease. The few that refuse to participate will be offset by the improved quality of information from those who do. There may be fewer “professional singers” and ‘Jedi Knights’ in their database, but we can all live with that. Meanwhile, I have to get some hard data on these surprising fish of mine. Somebody may want to know how many of them I’m keeping out back, and I want to be accurate.

he carefree days of summer can be a dangerous time on British Columbia roads - especially over the long weekend when eager travellers sometimes forget to slow down and enjoy the sunshine. In recent years, on the B.C. Day long weekend, there have been on average 1,730 crashes resulting in 510 injuries and three deaths, according to ICBC stats. These are staggering numbers that should make all of us consider our behind-thewheel behaviour when we head out this weekend. The B.C. RCMP offers up commonsense ways to make B.C. roads safer this summer: ! If you plan to drink, plan ahead. If your long-weekend celebration involves drinking, arrange for a safe way home. ! Be realistic about your travel times and check the road situation before you leave. Check www.drivebc.com for possible highway closures before heading out and allow extra time. If you are going to be later than expected, don’t use it as an excuse to put the pedal to the metal. ! Slow down and keep your distance. Always follow the posted speed limits in construction and playground zones. Weaving in and out of traffic is one of the top five high-risk behaviours that cause car crashes, according to the RCMP website. ! Lastly, buckle up. If you aren’t wearing a seat belt, the chances of dying in a car accident are 25 times higher. The last recommendation is to set an example. Show your children and other drivers the benefit of courteous and cautious driving. Maybe if enough of us practise these suggestions, this B.C. long weekend will be the safest one yet.

A big thank you to the Chilliwack RCMP Editor: Thank you Chilliwack RCMP. Last Wednesday, July 21, I was released from the local hospital after receiving a knee replacement. My 87year-old mother (she will not appreciate that I’ve disclosed her real age) is visiting from Saskatoon, here to help me out for a few weeks. My mother was called to pick me up at 10 a.m. I sat eagerly awaiting her arrival in my wheelchair at the front entrance of the hospital. The promise of home and real edible food loomed in my head! I knew that she would be early, because she always was. However, at 10:30 then 10:45 she still had not arrived. I phoned and she was not at home, so I knew she was out somewhere. Concerned, I asked Alice, a kind and incredible hospital volunteer, what I should do. She suggested I call the RCMP. Uncertain

They asked information and 10 to 15 minutes later called back to say that they would drive by my house to see if she had left and alert the other members to be on alert for her vehicle. They can’t stop gathering tax Editor: I fully sympathize with Jack Carradice (letters, July

27) in his feelings over more and more underthe-counter tax gathering by stealth. In addition to this eco fee there is the fee attached to blank recording tapes and CDs, though strangely enough blank DVDs are exempt. You can bet your sweet bippy the powers that be are falling over themselves endeavouring to plug that loophole in their tax-gathering powers. I do observe, though, that historically most attempts to legally thwart any government’s tax gathering are doomed to inevitable failure. The ongoing HST protest has to jump through so many hoops deliberately set up to stop it that it will probably fail. Even if a new B.C. government sweeps to power, the HST will stay because future ministers will protest that it is too late or too costly to change it. Besides, even if there is no HST, the government

will simply take the same amount of tax from the populace in some other way. I thought as a young and gullible student of common sense that the first priority of any government was the protection and care of the people. No, no, no. It is simply to gather tax. Ever since Magna Carta kings needed parliament to authorize the imposition of tax. Very little has changed in that regard. The people were stitched up then and we are still being stitched up now. No obfuscating politician could convince me otherwise. As Jack Carradice suggests, we do so need good investigative reporters to expose government deceit plus also good hard-hitting political interviewers to give our smirking MLAs and MPs a thorough grilling especially on television. s it possible to answer the question “Is there a God?” During a previous article, I suggested that we put on our spiritual CSI hats and ask if the “God” or “non-God” answer is a better fit for the fingerprint evidence we see around us. For example, if you visited our planet for the first time, you would hopefully see in the activity and structures around us, some sort of intelligence at work. Logic tells us that when we see sequenced and orderly activity, there is a mind or intelligence behind it. In the same way, when we see the universe around us, it leads us to ask why are things orderly and patterned rather than random? Why does water always boil at the same temperature and how can I be sure this will

Another interesting question is this: Why, when we look inside of ourselves, do we find some sort of moral code? I mean, we all like to say that people are free to believe and do their own thing—until they cut us off on the freeway! If you see one cat beating up on another you might yell at it but you probably wouldn’t call it a “bad cat!” Why do we hold humans to a higher standard than animals? Is it because we have a bigger brain or is it because we know we have value and worth to someone? Another intriguing fingerprint to

analyze comes from an observation of human culture. Human culture, past and present is full of amazing diversity. At the same time, there is in virtually every culture a pervasive belief in God, gods, or spiritual forces at work. Science and rationalism haven’t caused this to go away. Even in places like modern China where the state sought to eradicate religion through materialism, education and prosperity, the “God-bug” only became more virulent. Why? Could there be truth in the biblical idea that “God has planted eternity in the hearts of men”? In the 1960s, a Russian Cosmonaut returned from orbiting the Earth and confidently announced to his nation that he had found no

he Chilliwack Cougars hope to hit a home run this weekend as the hosts of the Bantam AA Provincial Championships at Fairfield Island Park. The top-ranked Cougars will look to continue their winning ways and advance to the Western Provincial Championships. The Cougars earned a top seeding in style by going 8-1-1 in summer league play, pushing the team’s record in spring and summer leagues to an impressive 28-2-1. Cougars scorekeeper Lee Rogers said the team’s pitching has been exceptional all year, embodied by a no-hitter thrown by Blake Peeling against the Coquitlam-Port Moody Reds. “We’ve always pitched well,” said Rogers. “Later in our season, our hitting has caught

up.” And how. In just 10 games, the Cougars put 131 runs on the board—an average of more than 13 a game and nearly fifty more than the next highest-scoring team. “We’ve just recently come on really strong with our bats,” said coach Chuck Peeling. “The boys are hitting the ball really well.” And with the tournament taking place on midget-size diamonds, Peeling said his hardhitting team should have an edge. “You will see a lot of hard hit balls out to the outfield.” Rogers, meanwhile, said the Cougars are a cohesive unit with a strong leadership core. And while “provincials is a different animal,” he said that if the team can carry its regular season success into the tournament, it can expect to do well. The Cougars opened the tournament Thursday with games against Burnaby and Vancouver. Round robin play continues on Friday and Saturday before semi-finals and finals on Sunday. Knocking down the boys

lysha Morrison isn’t one to shy away from physical contact on the lacrosse floor. “I love the adrenaline you get when you knock someone on their butt or score a goal,” she said. Morrison, 13, hopes to be doing plenty of both next month, as she joins Team B.C.at the Girls Bantam Lacrosse Championship of Canada, held this week in Whitby and Oshawa, Ontario. The defensive dynamo was an important player for Chilliwack’s Bantam A2 lacrosse squad, which this year reached the provincial championships and on which she was the only girl. With her older brother and sister both playing lacrosse, it was only natural for Morrison to take up the sport. As she grew more familiar with the game and learned how to leave an impact, her enthusiasm grew. “I love to hit,” she said. And she loves the adrenaline rush that comes from “showing boys that I’m just as tough as them when I knock them down.” Of course, hitting is also a skill and one that Morrison had to learn. “My first year playing I tried to knock this kid on his bum, but I went down instead.” That no longer happens much. Her coach, Jamie Scott, says Morrison is an intense and aggressive competitor.

“She’s good all round,” said Scott. Obviously the Team BC coaches agreed, to Morrison’s delight. “Getting picked for Team BC—it’s kind of hard to explain—my heart kind of stopped beating at first,” she said. While Morrison was a defensive specialist for Scott’s team this year, she’ll be looked at to do more for Team BC in Ontario. She’s been placed on the power play and said she has a good shot but has to learn to use it more. On her Chilliwack club, she said “they looked at me for defence not offence; we looked for other people, and now they’re looking at me for defence and offence.” Morrison was one of four girls playing on boys teams selected to the squad. She said that “playing with girls is very different,” from how the girls approach the game in practice to how they play defence. And while Morrison prefers playing with boys “100 per cent,” she said it’s fun to be part of a girls’ squad and be able to dress with the team. Morrison left for Ontario on Monday and will be joined by her family, along with her grandparents from New Brunswick. Other than hot, humid weather, she said she didn’t know what to predict will happen in Ontario. “I’ve never played with girls before, so I’m not sure what to expect out of them.” And while she doesn’t know how next month will turn out, long-term, Morrison already knows that she wants to take her lacrosse to the next level. A student at Vedder middle school, Morrison hopes to attend a high school where she can play lacrosse or, if possible, win a scholarship to an academy in the U.S. Eventually she’d like to attend John Hopkins University or Duke University, where she hopes to keep knocking people on their behinds.

Goats, gourds and rock ’n‘ roll Solid lineup for 2010 Exhibition music stage has something for all

ttendees of the Chilliwack Exhibition may come for the goats, the apple pies and the rides, but they should stay for the guitars, amps and the rock. This year’s exhibition has a great music lineup during all three days and into the evening Friday and Saturday. The musical weekend culminates in a Saturday night show featuring Langley band The Left. Opening up for the band are two local teenage

rock bands—Women of Britain and The Stirs. The Left have opened for Hedley, 54-40, The Trews, Tal Bachman and, most recently, Blind Melon. CTV licensed almost all the songs from their last album for their primetime drama, Whistler. The first single from the next album, “Drinking About You,” has already gone to air on local radio and received rave reviews. T h e L e f t’s m u s i c h a s b e e n described—by band member Eric Davis—as a “modern version of the Beatles meeting Death Cab for

Cutie,” adding they try to have the energy of the Foo Fighters. “Lots of people say they come up with music when they’re in the darkest place in your life,” explains Davis on the band’s website. “We’re the opposite. We all feel loved and appreciated. None of us ran away from home or anything. Our slogan is ‘taking fun seriously.’” Wo m e n o f Br i t a i n a re A l e x Smith, his brother Brian, along with Evan Duncan and Jaydee Bateman, and their music has b e e n d e s c r i b e d a s “u p b e a t , punky, fun music.” The Stirs are local boys Kyle Schick, Kaeden Teindl, Daniel Sparrow and K iefer Mar tens who most recently rocked the Tractorgrease stage at Yarrow Days.

The Friday evening show features The Lazy Susans, Quinn Patterson and The Tractorgrease Folk, the latter of which is a collection of musicians that frequently record at Tractorgrease Studio. Jeff Bonner owner of the studio decided it’d be cool to have the session players back him up on a collection of modern folk songs. Blues fest sends out the Word

Seventh annual Back to the Blues Festival

he seventh annual Back to the Blues gospel blues festival hits Chilliwack this long weekend with a lineup organizers are excited about. A last-minute addition to the weekend is Juno Award winner Greg Sczebel and his band who will perform on Sunday. Sczebel won the 2005 Juno for contemporary Christian/gospel album of the year for his debut album Here to Stay and has won a spate of other Christian and gospel music awards. This year, the festival has added a second stage, right beside the main stage, which will feature great local talent.

The Harrison Hot Springs Summer Entertainment Series features a new show every Friday at 6 p.m. from Aug. 6 to Sept. 3 in the Harrison Lake Plaza by the beach. Dragon Boat Festival will be held at Main Beach on Aug. 7 from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. The public is invited to participate in cheering on the racing teams, paddling in a dragon boat for a toonie, joining in the flower ceremony to honour breast cancer survivors and those that lost the battle and more. This summer one of Canada’s most iconic artists, Stompin’Tom Connors, plays Chiliwack’s Heritage Park. Stompin’Tom is in the 46th year of his incredible music career since getting his break in Timmins, Ont., where he overcame a life of poverty and hard knocks to become the revered recording artist he is today. hen Virginia was on her own, she lost touch with people. Aside from the holidays and occasional outings with her family, she spent a lot of time at home alone.
