For the second school board meeting in a row, trustees have voted down motions aimed at cutting about $50,000 from the cost of doing what they do.

At Tuesday’s meeting, trustee John-Henry Harter floated the idea of asking the Ministry of Education to eliminate two of Chilliwack’s seven trustee positions.

“We’re always talking about having to cut staff and we never have considered discussing a reduction in the number of trustees,” he said.

Under the province’s School Act, boards of education can be comprised of three, five, seven or nine trustees as determined by the Ministry of Education.

Harter admitted the estimated $50,000 the board would save by eliminating two trustees was a token amount given the district’s $100 million-plus budget, but said it was an important gesture given the district’s plan to cut 61 jobs next year to meet a nearly $5 million shortfall.

“I think it shows we’re willing to look to ourselves, and that we’re not deeming ourselves irreplaceable,” he said.

ultus Lake won’t become part of the City of Chilliwack any time soon as the committee tasked with addressing governance decided not to hold a referendum and was disbanded onWendesday.

The motion to disband the committee was passed by a vote of four to three at the final meeting of the Cultus Lake Governance Committee.

The committee’s task was to look at the issue of amalgamation of Cultus Lake with Chilliwack as this was the only option for future Cultus governance the provincial government would support.

But amalgamation would only have been possible if the interested parties, which include the Soowahlie band, agreed to a referendum, something Soowahlie Chief Otis Jasper said they do not support given ongoing land claims.

The city’s position was that amalgamation would only be possible if the province provided funding for a number of expenses that would have to be incurred. Some included: upgrades to sewer and water systems; closure of the landfill at Cultus; funds for summer policing; and maintenance of ColumbiaValley Highway.

But Gaetz said without provincial help, the costs of amalgamation would be too onerous to city taxpayers.

“There is no way we would be able to sell this to the people of Chilliwack,” she said, in support of the motion to disband and not hold a referendum.

“It seems to me the process has kind of come to a pause,” Coun. Pat Clark said.

But Cultus Lake Park Board commissioner Sacha Peter, Fraser Valley Regional District electoral Area E director Dave Lamson, and Cultus Lake Community Association representative Dave Clyne voted against the motion.

Peter said despite the costs the city cannot afford and despite Soowahlie’s lack of support for a referendum, it should have been done anyway to“provide an element of certainty.”

He figured if the people of Chilliwack voted against amalgamation, the issue would be put to rest, at least temporarily. If voters voted for amalgamation, that

might spur the provincial government to deal with Soowahlie and come to the table regarding costs.

Lamson said he and others had been involved in this governance issue for about a decade and suggested a referendum would at least carry on some element of democracy.

Cathy Watson, director of structure and First Nation relations, the Ministry of Community and Rural Development’s representative, said a referendum would likely be pointless as the minister would have a hard time accepting the outcome when both Soowahlie and the city don’t want one held at all.

“I appreciate that the residents of Cultus Lake find this process disappointing,” Watson said.

Firefighters snuffed out a fire that started Wednesday morning in a crawl space of a home on the corner of Cleveland Avenue and Fletcher Road.

The home did not appear to be seriously damaged but remains a serious fixerupper. The house has sat vacant for the past four years after an initial fire sparked by a marijuana g r ow o p e r a t i o n f o rc e d the abandonment of the property.

I n t h e y e a r s s i n c e, a bank may have taken ownership of the home, a l t h o u g h a s s i s t a n t f i re chief Ian Josephson could not confirm that. He did say that the fire and city bylaw officials will “get on the owners right away” to ensure a third fire doesn’t erupt.

“We go after the owner pretty hard to either secure the building really tight or tear it down,” he told the Times. “If there’s no value in it we want it torn down because we know for a fact there’s going to be another fire.”

Owners, he said, usually agree.

“The owners don’t like headaches like this either.

They’d rather take care of business.”

The keen eye of a Chilliwack resident helped police bust a thief.

Chilliwack Mounties were tipped off Wednesday night that a man appeared to be scoping out the contents of vehicles parked on Tilston Street.

As police were on their way, the man was seen getting into a truck and when the cops showed up, he was riding a bicycle away from the scene. Police managed to catch the suspect, who they say had a tool box taken from a truck. The man also admitted to checking vehicles for change.

A 24-year-old man appeared in court Thursday to face charges of theft under $5,000 and possession of stolen property. He also had two outstanding warrants for theft under $5,000 and breach of probation.

“Theft from vehicles is an ongoing issue that police are trying to reduce” said Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop.

There was also one that was made in error, and the final four were “in the works” before the new regulations came into effect, according to the mayor.

At a press conference held at city hall on Thursday, Gaetz repeatedly pointed out that the vast majority of the inconsistencies outlined by the ALC report were done in a “very different time.”

She also was careful not to blame mayors, councils or city staff prior to 2002 for the many ALR boundary adjustment inconsistencies.

The ALC report pointed to a 1994 policy amendment to “accommodate non-buildable lots as part of boundary subdivisions.” This put a priority on residential development in the ALR, “which is inconsistent with the goals of the ALC Act to preserve farmland and encourage its agricultural uses.”

One of the “positive benefits” that city staff in 1994 suggested would come from the policy directive was “a more or less windfall profit to the landowners of these parcels.”

Gaetz said the economic picture was very different at the time with the closure of CFB Chilliwack and two food processing plants.

While she did not want to speculate on the thought processes at the time, she added the council of the day said, “In whatever way you can aid development in our community, do it.”

Policy Directive F-3, as it is called, is still on the books, but Gaetz said it is not followed by the city.

knife-wielding man robbed a Chilliwack liquor store Monday evening.

Police say a lone man entered the Plaza Liquor Store on Yale Road Monday around 8:50 p.m., produced a knife and left with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Police are looking for the public’s help in identifying the robber.

The man is described as white, 45 to 50 years old, between 170 and 190 pounds, with a dark moustache. He wore a dark grey zip-up hoodie, a blonde wig and a black ball cap during the robbery.

“In essence, the ALC cannot turn back the clock and is compelled to accept that some agricultural lands in Chilliwack have been negatively affected by a number of boundary adjustment subdivisions made by the city,” the report said.

However, the ALC will require the city to make applications for non-farm use in respect to several school properties that had boundaries adjusted into ALR land as well as the expansion of Fairfield Island Park.

For the sake of comparison, the ALC looked at boundary adjustment subdivisions made by other municipal governments in the province. The report stated that of 97 other municipal governments with land in the ALR between Nov. 1, 2002 and Feb. 10, 2009, there

were 115 boundary adjustment subdivisions.

Of that number, 53 (46 per cent) were in Chilliwack. The next highest total was in Abbotsfored with 34 or (29.6 per cent) followed by the Township of Spallumcheen with seven (six per cent) adjustments.

The Rosebank property mentioned in the report was owned by Wilmer and Karen Rasmussen, who wanted to keep two acres of the 11 and sell off the rest for their retirement.

The city and the ALC repeatedly denied their applications and in 1997 they sold the property to their daughter and son-in-law, who in turn sold it to Les, then the mayor.

The Rosebank Place land was never removed from the ALR, but instead, the approving officer at the time, Grant Sanborn, allowed the property to be subdivided and sold off by Les.

Knives being used more often A new study that says knife-related homicides in Canada are on the rise echoes the growing use of such weapons in Chilliwack, according to police.

“We’ve seen an increasing trend. I think it’s fair to say that some things would have historically been your typical fist fight now have other weapons present,” said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Lea-Anne Dunlop.

The sheer presence of such weapons, even if they are not brought with malice in mind, can lead to an escalation of violence, said Dunlop.

The Statistics Canada report notes the proportion of killings involving knives has risen over the past 35 years as the rate of gun killings has fallen.

Today, 34 per cent of homicides involve the use of a gun, while knives are used in another 34 per cent.

Knife use in other violent crimes has not changed, according to the report.

Cops welcome stiffer rules

hilliwack RCMP hope proposed stiff drunk driving rules will help further convince the public that booze and cars don’t mix.

The province has proposed legislation that will force drivers with blood alcohol readings between .05 and .08 to pay $200 and stay off the road for three days. Those penalties increase each time a driver is caught. Drivers who blow over .08 for the first time will face an automatic 90-day driving ban. They’ll also have to pay $500, in addition to whatever criminal charges are brought.

“We welcome anything that will help us do our job and keep the road safe,” said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Lea Anne Dunlop. “Despite lots of efforts and education and enforcement action that goes into it, impaired driving is still a daily occurrence in almost every community.”

Last year 136 charges were laid for impaired driving in Chilliwack. That number was up slightly from 2008, which saw 126 charges laid that year.

Dunlop said the legislation drives home the point that alcohol impairs a driver’s ability to control his or her vehicle, even when it’s consumed at levels that would not traditionally bring criminal charges.

With many options available to drinkers, from cabs to designated drivers and holiday programs, Dunlop said “it is unforgivable in this day and age to drink and drive.”

Some, though, have expressed concern that the new penalties will be imposed by police, rather than a judge.

Fraser Health, which runs Chilliwack General Hospital, already has rules in place that force health officials to tell police when a patient has suffered a gunshot injury.

Spreading the good news

I

f you believe my uncle, the media is overly negative.

Indeed, he has termed his local paper (to which he still subscribes, it must be noted) “The Daily Wail.”

Besides being ab-so-lutely high-larious, his less-thanpositive take on the media is hardly unique. If you look carefully, or are part of the nefarious media clique of doom-mongers to which I subscribe with a weekly pint of blood, you’ll notice such claims of negativity abound on the Internet (along with UFO sightings, clubs for tall people, and probably even dissertations on the socio-political ramifications of Nickelback songs).

Now it may very well be true that the media gets off on writing about bad stuff. I admit that it is a heck of a lot easier to write 400 words about a robbery that did happen than it is to write 50 words about a murder that didn’t occur.

But I can reassure the general media consumer that there is a whole legion of people spreading the good news every day.

They write sunny stories each and every day about the never-ending wonderfulness of hydroelectric power, the budgetary brilliance of governments, the world-

Indeed, every day, Good News Professionals write great stories about truly (they love the word “truly” for some truly obnoxious reason) amazing events and occurrences.

That’s straight from the taxpayer-paid Good Newsers with the B.C. Government.

Or this from the “Job Creation and Employment” section of a government website: “British Columbia has built an economy that has seen record job-creation levels in recent years, with more employment opportunities for people in every part of the province.”

If you like your good news from the free market, Canada Newswire (www.newswire.ca) boasts the country’s finest and most continual supply of rosy information. You can learn about mining companies investing in sure-bet Peruvian exploration properties, and that (but not how) Calgary attracted a worldrenowned neurologist.

But these sources are all warm ups to the best of the best: the Good News Network. For a oneyear subscription of just $24 you get answer to all the good news you could ever dream of.

As I write this, their top story is . . . drumroll please . . . “Schools Recycle Milk Cartons.” I am not making this up. Indeed, I couldn’t. Your subscription also gives you access to “Major Airlines Pledge Not To Charge For Carry-Ons,” and, my personal favourite, “The Law Of Distraction: How To Focus Like a 5 year old.”

There’s only one bummer, though. The stories tend to revolve around issues and events one step removed from massive tragedy.

So you get stories about Oklahoma bombing victims receiving scholarships. Just try to forget about all those people who died in the blast. Nobody likes a whiner.

he Cultus Lake Governance Committee held its final meeting on Wednesday as those involved voted to disband and not to hold a referendum.

It’s too bad that after years of hard work put into figuring out how to change the way Cultus Lake Park is governed that the process has been essentially killed.

But no one should be too surprised.

Cultus Lake Park is governed under a unique system that has had its share of problems.

Village status is out of the question as far as the province is concerned. The status quo is unacceptable as far as the City of Chilliwack is concerned. Amalgamation with the city is also out of the question given the cost to Chilliwack taxpayers with which the provincial government refuses to help.

The terms of reference for the committee said that the interested parties: the city, the park board and the Soowahlie band, all had to agree on whether a referendum would be held on amalgamation.

But the city doesn’t want to pay for amalgamation and Soowahlie doesn’t want any changes until the claims on its traditional territory are addressed by the provincial and federal governments.

In the Feb. 18, 2003 edition of the Times, page one had the headline: “Hands Off: Debate about changes to Cultus Lake’s future a moot point, says Chief Kelly.”

At that time Chief Doug Kelly said—as Chief Otis Jasper does today—the land around Cultus Lake Park belongs to Soowahlie.

In May of 1864, Governor James Douglas had a surveyor stake out 4,000 acres to Soowahlie, reserve land that was later reduced to 650 acres “without legal authority, without surrender, without the Soowahlie’s consent, and without compensation . . . ” according to the band.

Without resolution of this claim, the governance process at Cultus is hopeless.

Time enough to get where we’re going Editor: “Young man killed on job with survey crew” . . . “Man killed on Hwy 33”.

This young man was 23 years old survived by a young wife and a 10-monthold son. A son, brother, nephew, grandson. This was my older brother who was taken from his infant son and loving family because of driver error.

These were the headlines in 1976 that I still keep in a special place as a memorial to the profound loss to a family that resulted in life changes that unfortunately too many continue to experience.

As I read tonight about the flag person hit by the driver (with children in his vehicle) I am compelled to write that all these years later it is no easier to accept that someone had the power to not end my brother’s life. We all have the power of making decisions when behind the wheel to drive safely and take responsibility for those in our vehicle as well as others. Honestly, who can you stand to lose by waiting two minutes?

Police should have done more Editor: A good article by Tyler Olsen, “Question flagging support (Times, April 27)” that raises an excellent question as to how we are, or are not, supporting and protecting workers.

Three hundred and fiftyfive dollars seems like quite a minor fine to me for an action that could have potentially cost someone their life, or a serious bodily injury. A flagger is not only protecting his staff, but also the individuals in vehicles from entering a temporarily hazardous situation. Is a few minutes of your time so much to ask for everyone’s safety?

Shame on the RCMP. By first threatening to run the flagger over, and then actually hitting him with his vehicle, is this not a situation requiring more than simply a traffic ticket? Is

the vehicle in question not a weapon that the driver used? Assault? Reckless endangerment? Uttering threats? Do I dare say attempted manslaughter/ murder? At least criminal neglect?

No criminal charges at all? The police attended the scene and basically slapped the driver on the wrist.

How much in wages is this going to cost the employer for the employee’s week off work, and the suffering and pain of the employee? I am assuming much more than $355, monetarily and mentally.

I wonder if the punishment would simply have been a minor fine, had the same thing happened to a police officer directing traffic?

Hopefully the company and employee have an option to follow up with a civil suit against the driveras it seems the police will do little.

Definitely not homophobic Editor: Re: Response to front page article in the April 23 Chilliwack Times about Ms. Sandve’s art work and her message to those who are supposedly homophobic.

I have always wondered why some people choosing alternate sexual lifestyles think that people who do not agree with this behaviour are actually afraid of these people—homophobic in other words.

Though I am definitely not homophobic, I for one do believe homosexuality is morally wrong and extreme-

ly unhealthy and destructive to one’s whole being: it is dangerous territory for those practising it.

Let’s use a natural example. If a young person decides to snowboard in dangerous, restricted areas of the mountain they may end up lost and even meet their death because of avalanches or deep tree pits, etc. So too, will a person who chooses to go into dangerous, restricted (did you know there are universal absolutes, Ms. Sandve?) territory when it comes to sexual activities.

Let me emphasize, I am not homophobic. However, I am deeply concerned for these individuals who choose these destructive sexual behaviours. I value all people simply because they are human beings and loved

by God and the homosexuals I do encounter I treat respectfully. However, I can never respect the behaviour they choose. This type of unnatural sexual behaviour often destroys through disease, such as AIDS, causes emotional and spiritual sickness, often brings great pain to families, and eventually erodes societies built on man/women marriages and their children. May I end with this little quote I heard somewhere, “God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.”

Queer posters are offensive Editor: With all due respect, Brittany Sandve probably believes she is doing a good deed, by depicting homosexual behaviour in these

posters which she drew (Times, April 23).

However, these posters may be offensive to those who also attend the school but are turned off by such behaviour. It is not because of being homophobic, but rather it does not sit well with the soul and therefore is offensive to some.

The school, in order to be fair, should also depict posters showing another way of life, so that the children have the freedom to choose, and the school not be charged with being discriminatory and pushing a certain lifestyle to the forefront.

How things have changed.

Where the schools were once known as a place you learned your ABC or reading, writing and arithmetic, now have taken over the parents’ job of teaching the children to be courteous to all mankind.

Reporter should show respect Editor: I feel compelled to respond to the article on page 8 of the April 23rd edition of the Times, entitled “The best time of her life,” particularly to the statement made by reporter Paul J. Henderson, that “There is no superstitious longing with Erica, no brainwashed delusion of a preached after life.”

Now, I am not a traditionalist nor am I a fundamentalist either, but I am a Christian woman and my faith has gotten me through a lot of difficult times in my life. So I found this statement offensive, insulting, disrespectful, and very hurtful, because it sounds like he is implying that Christians who believe in God and in an afterlife are superstitious, brainwashed and delusional.

Perhaps Mr. Henderson, could take a lesson from Brittany Sandve the Sardis senior secondary Grade 12 student in the article on the front page of the same April 23 edition of the Times, with her posters and art she’s trying to make a difference, to encourage and teach people to be tolerant, and respectful of all people, no matter what. She said, and

I quote, “I know how it feels and I don’t think anyone else should have to feel that way.”

I quote one of her posters, “You don’t have to accept it, just respect it.”

Mr. Henderson, I respect your freedom of choice and you right to your opinion, all I ask from you on behalf of all Christians, is the same respect. An apology would be nice too.

By the way, Mr. Henderson, I loved your beautiful article about Erica, and her zest for life and her acceptance of her situation. I only hope that when my time comes, that I will have even half the faith and strength she has, to be in such peace, under such difficult circumstances.

CHEDDAR, JALAPENO Editor: How far does one have to be in order for the bus to wait or stop for you?

I am a regular bus user. On several occasions there have been people who missed the bus because they were not at the sign post even though they indicated they wanted to ride the bus.

For example, during the last week of March, I witnessed an incident involving an elderly aboriginal woman with some disability. She was approaching the bus stop as quickly as her ablitity would allow.

It was obvious this person could not move fast becuse she was using a walker. The woman motioned the bus driver to hold the bus for her but the driver didn’t respond and didn’t even slow down.

Now, we were travelling down the busy street of Vedder Road when a young able Caucasian man motioned to the bus driver to hold the bus for him. He was further away from the bus stop than the elderly woman whom we passed earlier. The driver did pull over for him.

Now, why did the driver stop for the young man and not the elderly lady? Was it because the man was more noticable or was it racial discrimination?

Where did Noah park the Ark?

fter claiming he had $20 in his pocket, a playful John Ortberg asked an expectant crowd of Sunday morning church-goers, “Who believes me?”

No one raised their hand for some time (a little awkward!).

Then, after a considerable pause, one man finally announced that he believed Ortberg. He believed Ortberg even though he had never met him and even though he didn’t know for sure if he had the

money in his pocket.

He believed Ortberg because Ortberg is a pastor and by this man’s own admission Ortberg “seemed like a trustworthy guy.”

Some guys just have that kind of face, I guess.

Ortberg reached into his pocket and pulled out . . . a twenty dollar bill. Then he surprised the man by saying, “I have just destroyed your faith—because faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. You can see the 20—so, your faith is destroyed.”

I suspect that man was OK with

the illustration though because Ortberg gave him the 20 dollars to reward him for his faith.

Ortberg began again, “I have $100 in my pocket. Who believes me?”

Every hand shot into the air.

An expedition crew in Turkey is 99.9 per cent sure it has uncovered the remains of Noah’s Ark (so ABC News reported). A group of Turkish scientists and a team of evangelical Christians from Hong Kong claim they have found chunks of the famed ark with wooden chambers intact twoand-a-half miles above sea level.

The wood, evidently, carbon dates to the time of Noah.

Yeung Wing-Cheung explained, “We are not saying that we are 100 per cent certain that what we found is Noah’s Ark. No one has ever seen the ark, no one knows what it looks like.”

Yeung said, “We are only 99.9 per cent certain that it is Noah’s Ark based on historical accounts, including the Bible and local beliefs of the people in the area, as well as carbon dating.”

No one has ever seen the ark.

And nor will we see even its would-be remnants—at least for

If the ministry approved the reduction, it wouldn’t take effect until the 2011 election, and the district wouldn’t see any savings until the 2012-13 school year at the earliest.

“All those people that are being cut, they’re being cut now,” said McKay. “If we really want to do this, we need to do something that has an immediate effect, today.”

Trustee Heather Maahs argued cutting trustee positions was not within the board’s mandate, but cancelling its $50,000 annual B.C. School Trustees Association membership next year would have been.

Maahs introduced a motion to that effect two weeks ago, but the motion was deferred,

Harter emphasized the move to fewer trustees would in no way be meant to undermine the board’s commitment to “autonomous, democratic and accountable locally elected school boards,” but chair Silvia Dyck said she couldn’t fully support a cut in trustees without some public input.

“I have a hard time personally making a decision to reduce the voice of the people without consulting the people.”

The motion was defeated with only Harter voting in favour and Dyck abstaining from the vote.

Is the Cell Phone Ban a Success Story?

In a March 2010 news release, ICBC thanked commuters for “planning ahead and commuting creatively,” and making “smart decisions” that contributed to there being “approximately 20 per cent fewer claims [in the Lower Mainland] reported during the 2010 Winter Games than the same time period in 2009.”

Likewise, crashes were Cedric Hughes down across BC: 17,400 crashes in February, 2,200 less than in February 2009, and 18,600 reported crashes in March 2010, 2,200 less than in March 2009. On a percentage basis, these numbers translate into an 11.2 per cent reduction in February and a 13.5 per cent reduction in March.

Commentators have surmised that the “transit-friendly Olympics” and the [mostly good] weather were important contributing factors, but also noted that, “ the new provincial law against hand-held cell phone use and texting while driving, imposed in January and enforced since February” may also have had an impact.

That the Olympics were ‘transit friendly’ and that this helped to reduce crashes is indisputable. The Vancouver Sun reported that “more people than ever before in Metro Vancouver took transit in the first week of the Olympics and cited Translink statistics of ridership on buses up 34 per cent, the Sky Train’s Expo/ Millennium line up 54 per cent, the SeaBus up 200 per cent, and the West Coast Express up 78 per cent.

That the new cell phone law (banning the use of hand held cell phones) contributed is less conclusive. ICBC spokesman Mark Jan Vrem was quoted as saying “he’d like to think the new law is making the roads safer.”

Enforcement during the Olympics was problematic but across the province the police

reportedly handed out 2,200 tickets in February for cell phone law infractions. In March, the VPD handed out 249 such tickets and in West Vancouver police reported issuing 54 such tickets since February 1st, amounting to “about 10 per cent of all tickets issued in West Vancouver for driving violations.”

A recent study by Professor Sheldon H. Jacobson, University of Illinois, analyzing the relationship between pre- and post-law crash rates using public data from 62 counties in New York concludes that it does make a positive difference, especially “in densely populated urban areas with a higher number of licensed drivers than in rural areas.” Professor Jacobson’s study found that after banning hand-held cell phone use while driving, 46 counties in New York experienced lower fatal accident rates, 10 of which did so at a statistically significant level, while all 62 counties experienced lower personal injury accident rates.

According to a US Highway Loss Data Institute study (also recent), however, insurance claims in four states that have “cell phone bans” in place compared to areas where drivers can talk freely were not significantly different. HLDI president, Adrian Lund, said “If crash risk increases with phone use and fewer drivers use phones where it’s illegal to do so, we would expect to see a decrease in crashes, but we aren’t seeing it.”

Mr. Lund reportedly believes that drivers in jurisdictions with such bans may be switching to hands-free phones, which may pose similar risks for driver distraction.

Landscaping his way to a dreamscape

H

orror stories about unqualified, incompetent landscapers are almost as common as ghost stories on camping trips.

But one landscaper is trying to change that.

“There’s a solution for every problem,” says Steve Battell evenly, as he looks at pictures of a yard he and his landscaping company completely transformed.

At 32, Battell has spent nearly half his life working to make homeowners’ front yards and backyards better and more beautiful.

While he works in a management capacity now, doing everything from designing unorthodox patios to dragging his workers out of restaurants when it’s time to get back to work, he still has marks on his hands from the many years of hard, exacting work he’s done.

Unlike many landscapers, Battell doesn’t advertise. He doesn’t have to. He’s done enough good quality work that he relies purely on word of mouth and the labour of 18 employees to sell his prod-

uct.

“We’ve built a client base,” he says.

Battell has run the company for seven years, four in Toronto and the last three in Vancouver.

One of the reasons for Battell’s success may be his communication skills.

He says one of the keys to being a good landscaper is being able to put a customer’s ideas into practice.

“You’ve got to combine what they want with what can work,” he says.

Because one customer wanted a patio that didn’t look like anything people had seen before, Battell created a pattern that he figured there isn’t even a name for. The design looks like it’s part zig-zag, part parquet and a bit of maze. The patio ended up looking unique, and surprisingly, quite good.

Battell says another very important factor in landscaping is getting a feel for the client’s budget.

In 2009, Battell completed one of his most ambitious projects.

Before he started, the backyard consisted of two concrete decks

In a job that eventually cost $80,000, Battell used a bobcat, a crane and an excavator to completely remake the yard.

taken out and the yard was outfitted with a fire pit, a hot tub and a gazebo.

Battell also caters to people who want to make a few improvements to their yard, but aren’t quite ready to fork over $80,000 to

get it done.

He has pictures of a very impressive front yard landscaping job his company did. He said the job was prompted by the owner not wanting to mow his lawn anymore.

Battell paved some of the area with flagstone, turned over some of the remaining lawn to create a rock garden, and added a bed of river rock to deal with any problems that might come up in terms of drainage.

Battell says he customizes yards for various concerns his clients have. If a client has young children and wants to make sure the yard is “kid friendly,” Battell says he’ll avoid sharp corners and steep drop-offs.

If a customer is worried about his dog digging up the garden, Battell says he’ll designate one area of the yard for the dog. Weeds are a constant chore . . . and nightmare

W

eeding is apt to take more gardening time than anything else. Once some weeds are pulled you can be sure that you’ll never pull those particular plants again. Other weeds are nightmares that reincarnate over and over.

The white morning glory (Convovulus arvensis) is one of those that breed despair in gardeners because virtually anything you do to the top growth doesn’t touch the deep roots which rise up and re-shoot.

If the morning glory crept in from a neighbour’s yard is a weed barrier at least three feet (1m) deep (deeper if possible) may succeed in controlling spread. The vines creep along on shallow roots at first, but later put down deep, vertical roots reputed to plunge 20 feet or six metres and store three years food supply.

That’s why the last-resort method of covering infested areas with black plastic should be kept in place at least three years to eradicate morning glory. For weed control, black plastic is far more effective than landscape fabric.

It helps if you remove all the top growth and dig the surface roots before covering. When the three years are up, remove the plastic and put a thick mulch on the soil to ensure any dormant morning glory seeds can’t germinate.

Horsetail is another demon weed. This one has survived since the time of the dinosaurs and will have a good try at outwitting you too. Often it arrives in topsoil since the fine black roots are tough and hard to see. A North Shore gardener once told me she eradicated horsetail by repeated digging. It took 20 years, she added.

Clay soil gardeners have the worst time with horsetail.

But it isn’t happy with dry soil, nor does it like deep shade. Black plastic mulch forces it to endure both. A less drastic solution is planting the area closely with leafy evergreens and resigning oneself to intermittent digging. Horsetail can grow up through some landscape fabrics.

The third bully in this trio is couch (aka quack) grass.

This penetrates landscape fabrics by needlepoints on its shoots—which means resorting to black plastic to clear any given area.

Shoot ends are breakable.

That’s why digging always leaves a few young roots which inevitably re-shoot.

But these new plants are easily pullable when very young. Black plastic usually clears the couch grass in two years—though if the roots have moved deeply down it

Another nasty weed is ground elder. But its roots are shallow and removing them by sharp-eyed

patience and/or soil sifting really does work.

Dandelions, brambles and stinging nettles also spread too much and too far but have some redeeming features.

Brambles merit mercy in small numbers on large lots because they do produce delicious fruit. Removing them becomes much easier after you’ve dug out the shallow root ball. The

remaining roots sprout easily-dug, bramble plants which vanish with persistant uprooting.

Young dandelion greens are edible and butterflies love the flowers. Eradicating them means digging and/or shading them out with thick, healthy grass.

Some gardeners pour common white vinegar down each hole to discourage the remaining root.

The young shoots of stinging nettles are delicious in spring. Cooking destroys the sting. The leaves are also food for caterpillars of butterflies. Stinging nettles are quickly pullable if you wear close-textured or leather gloves. ◗ Anne Marrison is happy to answer garden questions.

Popular colour trend is ‘lively and cheerful’

he forecast for 2010 is for lots of blue skies, says a colour expert with a leading Canadian paint brand.

“The No. 1 colour is a clear sky blue,” Jennifer Jones, marketing communications manager for CIL Decorative Paints, said in a telephone interview from her Toronto office.

“We’re seeing this light blue coming out everywhere ... It symbolizes optimism and new beginnings,” she explained.

“It’s also associated with nature and the environment. So it gives us a feeling of getting away from it all. It’s refreshing; it’s soothing one of those feel-good colours,” she added.

Jones described the hot colours for 2010 as “really lively and cheerful.”

“People are becoming a little more adventurous with their colours,” Jones said. “And we’re encouraging them to continue that.”

Here’s what Jones said we can expect to see this year: The new reds are very vibrant. They’re replacing the previously fashionable neutral pinks and coffee-based reds. Clean, futuristiclooking pinks will be taking the spotlight. And we can expect to see a lot of coral tones.

Oranges are very bright. Think pumpkin and carrot tones, and rich earthy copper browns.

Oranges will have lots of yellow tones in them —to brighten things up. They’re moving away from last year’s red influence. The new hues emit a bright and sporty energy.

Yellows are soft and clean for the most part.

Look for sunny yellow, citrus, honey, mustard and banana shades. Used on their own or combined with shades of blue, the new yellows are refreshing and comforting with a hint of pizzazz.

Greens will have lots of yellow influence in them. Reminiscent of new plant shoots and beginnings, the new liquid-like greens exude a feeling of renewal, open space and freshness.

Purples are very deep, very intense. The dramatic violets create a look that’s both tra-

There are a lot more colours in the neutrals this year, Jones pointed out. Warm neutrals include beige - rich beiges that are almost brown. They’re not the washed-out, ultraconservative beige of previous years. The new warm neutrals are deeper, infused with yellow-based earth, clay, sand and grain tones.

For an ultra fashionable look, these warm neutrals can be combined with turquoises and teals.

“What we’re seeing a lot of this year also is greys,” Jones said. “Grey is kind of the new beige.”

Fairly saturated greys are being used as neutrals, instead of beige, she said. These cool neutrals—ash greys, near blacks and green slate tones—are being used on walls, as well as the neutral accent colour with greens and vibrant reds.

The use of colour in people’s homes can help lift their spirits, Jones said. And people will soon be able to select a mood to paint their home in on CIL’s new website at www. cil.ca, which divides the colour palette into four mood groups - each representing a feeling. They include: a mellow and comforting collection, which features serene and inviting colours; a soft and elegant collection, with colours that create a calm and sophisticated feel; a clean and playful collection, which features cheerful tones, often used in children’s rooms; and a deep and luxurious collection, which has rich and dramatic colours.

CIL has even developed an online test to help people determine what mood they’d like to create and what ambience they’d like to create in their home. A colour co-ordinator tool is also being made available. When a colour is punched in, the colour co-ordinator will recommend a bunch of co-ordinating colours that are guaranteed to match.

Cops for Cancer riders begin first official training Preparing for 900 km Tour de Valley fundraiser

ory Kornicki of the Surrey RCMP admitted to being very nervous on a recent Sunday morning.

It wasn’t his duties as a police officer that were worrying him. It was taking part in the first team training ride with the Canadian Cancer Society’s Cops for Cancer Tour de Valley.

“I just got my bike yesterday,” Kornicki said. “I don’t even have pedals yet!”

Kornicki and the other riders were gathered at the Cole Road rest stop in the Sumas Prairie, about to spend several hours learning to ride as a group.

Cops for Cancer is a fundraiser held every fall to support children with cancer.

Money raised goes to the Canadian Cancer Society’s programs such as research into childhood cancers, support for patients and their families, and to run Camp Goodtimes. The summer camp in Maple Ridge gives children in treatment or remission a chance to unwind and be kids again, not just patients.

That’s why Kornicki and more than 20 other police officers, ambulance paramedics, sheriffs, corrections officers and civilian police employees mounted their bikes on Sunday.

“I have so many reasons to do this,” Kornicki said.

As with so many of the riders, his reasons for battling cancer are personal.

He lost his father to cancer in January, and his motherin-law is fighting the disease now.

Eric Mead, a sheriff who lives in White Rock, also has plenty of reason to take part.

“My wife got diagnosed with cancer. In fact, she’s going through it right now,” Mead said.

He’s currently alternating personal training rides with taking his wife Nancy to treatments.

While he could have just written a cheque, Mead wanted to do something to help.

“Doing something to get the money to the people is sort of connecting the dots for me,” Mead said.

Putting in that effort is something this year’s team captain, Ken Usipiuk of the Delta Police, often talks

about. A veteran rider, he and the other organizers frequently mention what children suffering from cancer go through: chemotherapy, surgery and radiation that leaves them weak and often in pain.

The team’s leaders and trainers remind the riders that the effort they will put in—about 800 to 900 kilometres of riding during nine days on the tour in the fall—are nothing compared to what the kids are going through.

Fortunately for the new riders, Sunday’s trip is more about team-building and training than physical punishment.

Usipiuk wants to see the riders stick together and learn to work as a unit.

“Cops have a tendency to have that A-type personality,” Usipiuk said.

They need to learn to ride close to one another, either single file or in two files, shoulder to shoulder. They also need to learn to recognize a number of hand and verbal signals the riders at the front will use to warn the riders at the back about hazards such as gravel, potholes, or sudden stops.

“The whole goal of this is to stay together,” said Tim Anctil, one of the team’s trainers, and an RCMP officer at the Pacific Region Training Centre in Chilliwack.

Anctil designed the Sunday ride with new and experienced riders in mind. It has few hills, just a few “gentle undulations,” he said.

“It also builds team camaraderie as well,” Usipiuk said.

The ride itself goes off without a hitch, and Usipiuk notes that the pack looks like a well-oiled machine as it rolls through the rural countryside of Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley.

Every rider completes the ride together, regardless of experience level. By the fall, they’ll all be in good physical shape, and ready to tackle a ride that loops from Delta through Surrey, Langley, Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Hope, all the way to Boston Bar in the Fraser Canyon and back.

In the next few months, in addition to training, members of the Tour de Valley will be out in force in every area community, raising money for the cause. Pole sits, barbecues, dances, pub nights and other events are being planned.

That towering Albertan you see is the Chilliwack Bruins newest defenceman prospect. And he’s supposed to get even bigger.

With their first pick at Thursday’s WHL bantam draft, the Bruins picked up six-foot-five Dman Keegan Kanzig from Fort Saskatchewan.

Kanzig won’t play much for Chilliwack next year but when he does eventually lace up the skates, the Bruins will hope he can contribute as much as past first-round picks Kevin Sundher, Ryan Howse and Mitch Topping.

At just 15, Kanzig is already taller than any other Bruin and assistant director of scouting Jim McInnes told theTimes he may yet grow bigger.

McInnes and the Bruins scouts have been watching Kanzig the past year and have been impressed with the progress he has made.

At about 200 pounds, he already fills out his frame well.

“He skates very well, sees the ice well. He’s a shutdown-type of defenceman,” said McInnes.

The Bruins were happy to pick Kanzig with the seventh overall pick in the draft, especially considering the Bruins scouting staff had him pegged at that exact spot when putting together their pre-draft list.

Speaking to the Times soon after being drafted, Kanzig said he was excited to possibly play under Bruins coach Marc Habscheid.

“I’m looking forward to having the chance to play for him,” said Kanzig. “Hopefully I can bring a lot to the team if I do play.”

Kanzig said he tries to model his play after that of Team Canada star Shea Weber, who is known for his crushing hits and thunderous shot.

In the second round, the Bruins used the 29th overall pick to take Lethbridge winger Clay Spencer. The six-foot tall Spencer scored 30 goals in just 33 games for his bantam team last year.

McInnes described Spencer as a “hard working left-winger who is not afraid of the tough areas, which is something we were shooting for this year.”

Pochipinski and company took Westbank forward Luke Harrison with the team’s third pick.

McInnes said Harrison came out of the woodwork but impressed scouts with his work ethic and solid skill set.

“I think he’s going to develop into a character guy.”

The Bruins received a second third-round draft pick when they traded goaltender Mark Friesen to the Swift Current Broncos last year, and they used that pick to choose another goaltender, Coleman Vollrath, from the Calgary Bisons.

“As far as we were concerned, he was the top goaltender in Alberta,” said McInnes. “He’s a very steady guy. He doesn’t seem to get rattled.

“We felt pretty lucky that he was there.”

The Bruins didn’t have a pick in the fourth round, but they used a fifth round selection to pick up another Bison, defenceman Brodie Clowes.

McInnes said Clowes was a “very smart” player who wasn’t afraid to go to the difficult areas.

“He’s another guy who’s not afraid to go into the corners and in front of the net.”

The Bruins chose Kelowna winger Clark Brennan and Albertan defenceman Sean Davies in the seventh round, wingers Linden Bourne and Reid Halabi in the eighth round, Californian forward Taylor Crunk and defender Chandler Irvin in the 10th round.

Jock scraps More playoff hockey ahead for former Chilliwack Bruins A pair of ex-Chilliwack Bruins will square off against each other in the Royal Bank Cup, the Junior A national championship the Chilliwack Chiefs once competed for.

David Robinson, who left the Bruins midway through last season after citing a lack of passion for hockey, will suit up for his hometown Vernon Vipers when the tournament begins Saturday.

In the Vipers opening game, Robinson will find himself facing fellow exBruin Colton Graf, who will lace up his skates for the host Dauphin Kings.

Bantam AA Cougars pound out strong weekend wins Despite the constant threat of rain this past weekend, the Chilliwack Bantam AA Cougars were able to finish the weekend with two dominant wins, After a rainout early Saturday, the Cougars thumped Newton 16-1 at home Saturday afternoon, and then demolished the Vancouver Yankees 12-1 in Vancouver on Sunday.

Chilliwack got help from Newton’s three errors and a wild pitch, but sound base running and timely RBIs from Derek Riediger, Mark Penner and Blake Peeling allowed the Cougars to grind out 47 minutes of offence and 13 plate appearances in Saturday’s game.

On Sunday the Cougars rode two great innings at the plate to win the game. Scott Fitzsimmons came into the game in the third and retired the Yankees on eight pitches setting the stage for Matt Lamb to wrap up the last two innings with four strike outs.

The Chilliwack Bantam AA Cougars next game is May 1 at Fairfield Island Park against the Cloverdale Stallions.

Midget AAA Cougars down rival Abby Angels at Delair Park The Midget AAA Cougars knocked off their upper Fraser Valley rivals the Abbotsford Angels 5-3 in an evening tilt at Delair Park on Monday.

Dan Teichman pitched four innings of scoreless ball, striking out six and allowing two hits. The Cougars put up the game’s first run in the fifth when Brad Fitzsimmons singled, stole, advanced and crossed the plate on a Gage McLaren infield hit.

Chilliwack added three more runs in the sixth on a Josh Pharand hit and RBIs from Gerrit Werry and Taylor Whiteside.

Technically a fruit, but it looks like a vegetable

W

hile shopping amongst all the wonderful produce our stores have to offer, how many of you pass up the opportunity of putting a couple of eggplants in your basket? This wonderful fruit, more often than not, stays in the produce bin rather than making it to family dinner tables. There seem to be countless people that do not know enough about them, so hopefully I can shed some light for you.

Eggplant, as mentioned above, is technically a fruit not a vegetable. There are common, characteristic differences between fruit and vegetables. Fruit is usually the product of a plant or tree and contains seeds or a pit, while vegetables are the stalks, roots, and leaves of the plants themselves.

Allow me to give you a couple of examples: apples are obviously fruit – they are a product of a plant and have seeds. Broccoli is a vegetable as it is the stalk of a plant. Oranges, peaches, grapefruit, lemons, grapes, etc. are all fruit, while onions, carrots, asparagus, lettuce, etc. are all vegetables.

Today’s consumer most commonly differentiates fruits from vegetables on the basis of sweetness or lack thereof.

Although determination by judging sweetness would be generally correct, it would eliminate such fruits as tomatoes, peppers, avocados, and eggplants.

There are many types of eggplants cultivated around the world. The variety of eggplant most common in our markets is the pear-shaped, deep-purple coloured species, and is appropriately named the “common eggplant”. Therefore I will focus on them specifically.

Eggplants have a spongy flesh with a mild yet sometimes bitter flavour. Many prefer to peel eggplants, however the skin is completely edible. When choosing one at the produce counter, make sure the skin is unblemished and it is uniform in colour and shape. The small, edible seeds inside the eggplants are the culprits for causing most of the bitter flavour they may have. Therefore, select one that has fewer seeds. The best way to go about doing this, other than cutting one open, is by choosing a male eggplant over a female one.

On Cooking Refraining from going deep into plant horticulture, I will simply say there are male and female differences. Detecting these differences in eggplant is not as difficult as it may seem. Male eggplants are usually more rounded on the lower half of the pear shape and have a smoother bottom where the flower base is located. Female eggplants have a more slender pear-shape, and you can feel that the bottom flower base at the bottom of the eggplant is indented. You will find in comparison that the male eggplant will usually have fewer seeds than the female.

Regardless of which eggplant you may have purchased, there are other ways to remove some of the bitter flavour.

Simply salt slices of the eggplant and let drain for one to two hours.

Although this is effective for removing bitterness, it also obviously removes a lot of the water content as well.

So therefore, this step may work better with some recipes than others.

There are many great dishes you can prepare with eggplant. They can be halved, stuffed, grilled and baked.

Stew them with tomatoes and other vegetables to make a “ratatouille” or use slices to replace the pasta for a lower carbohydrate lasagna. Or try making Greek moussaka - a very delicious casserole made with eggplant, ground lamb and cream sauce.

Dear Chef Dez: I tried pan-frying cubes of eggplant for a recipe, and they sucked up all the oil I had in the pan. Is this normal, and if not, how can I prevent this from happening?

Angie D. Abbotsford Dear Angie: Yes, this is completely normal. The great thing about this is that it soaks up flavour at the same time! Since eggplants are very mild, this makes for an excellent opportunity to add some flavour to them. If you did want to avoid soaking up as much oil, you could accomplish this by coating the eggplant with flour, beaten eggs, and

a breading before pan-frying (if the recipe allows for this). A vegetable-based oil spray in the pan works great as well.

Escape to Hollyhock

T

here’s an old yogic saying that goes something like: there is no noise in the city, there is no peace in the country, it is all within you.

Nice notion, but for everyday life this is bunk. Sometimes we need to escape.

Hollyhock Educational Retreat Centre on Cortes Island is, as the crow flies, about 245 kilometres away from Chilliwack, but is a universe away in terms of visceral experience.

This is really getting away.

Those who have spent any time on the Gulf or Discover Islands may have noticed that the smaller the island and the more ferries it takes to get there, the more eclectic the island tends to be.

Cortes falls into this category as it’s three ferries away from the mainland and is home to an interesting mix of—to grossly oversimplify—wealthy retired folks with Subaru station wagons, offthe-radar backwoodsmen with rusting pickup trucks, and earthy back-to-thelanders trying to live a simpler, more sustainable lifestyle.

Hollyhock was founded by a few of these latter folks in 1982. The 44-acre oceanside retreat has private cabins, a

number of unique buildings for yoga and meditation, outdoor hot tubs and a lush garden with a commitment to sustainability; a garden I am told is known as the “heart of Hollyhock.”

My wife, baby daughter and I headed to Hollyhock in early April for a long weekend. Cortes Island isn’t necessarily hard to get to, but it certainly can be, and if all goes smoothly it will take you at least eight hours from Chilliwack—drive to Horseshoe Bay, ferry to Nanaimo, drive to Campbell River, ferry to Quadra Island, drive across Quadra, ferry to Cortes Island, drive to Hollyhock. (Of course, you could take a one-hour floatplane directly from Vancouver to Cortes.)

We left on a particularly windy day, one that saw trees down, power out and ferries cancelled. One thing about living in this most beautiful corner of the country—a modern civilization with good roads, safe communities and a generally reliable day-to-day life, is that all it takes is one windstorm/snowstorm/ hailstorm to bring us back to the 1800s.

After an all-day adventure on Friday from Nanaimo, we finally make it to Heriot Bay on Quadra where the second last ferry to Cortes is cancelled. However, we discover the Heriot Bay Inn, a

fabulously renovated heritage inn, pub and restaurant from about 1900, which is right beside the ferry lineup. Our already long journey and further delay is assuaged with a couple of pints of beer, a bowl of should-have-been-better clam and smoked salmon chowder and some bruschetta.

Finally we catch the ferry to Whaletown on Cortes as the sun sets and the waves roll in the Strait of Georgia near the entrance to Desolation Sound—the waves are massive and the small boat, the MV Tenaka and its 30or-so cars, lurches from side to side to side, making for a stomach-churning experience.

On Cortes we find much of the island in darkness, but we find Hollyhock. We arrive and about four people staying at the retreat—“seekers” as they call themselves—are hanging around in the main lodge, huddled with blankets around a roaring fire trying to get warm before they go to their cold beds in oceanside cabins.

The next morning I go for a walk with the baby out to see the sea, to find some coffee at the main lodge and chat with some people, the few visitors around in this off-season.

Just about an hour before power is restored to the area around Hollyhock, we get a tour of the grounds by marketing manager Greg Osoba. Paths lead through the mostly-treed property to cabins located all over the grounds. One meditation building through an old grove of fruit trees is a cob house with stonework walls and a green roof.

Adjacent to the main lodge is the large main garden where the retreat’s chefs try to get as much as possible for the daily organic vegetarian feasts. Off in the distance can be seen Hornby Island to the south and, much closer, Twin Islands and Hernando Island.

We have an utterly relaxing day, a little tour around the island, some calm and peace in our room. Once the power comes back on, things feel different. We arrived Friday to be kept warm by a crackling fire in a powerless night, but the next day we are in the same room, heated with baseboard heaters, checking e-mail with wi-fi access.

The power outage puts into stark clarity the difference between the busyness and anxiety that can come with our “regular” life and the simplicity and downsizing that seems to be part of the spirit of Hollyhock.

After our visit to Hollyhock, my wife said, “We need to simplify.”

There is a lot of far-out new age talk at Hollyhock but even for those who might be turned off by this, it’s easy enough to wade through. I have interest in sustainability, organic local food, notions of living closer with the earth, and all of those are entry points enough into a visit to Hollyhock.

About 2,000 to 2,500 people come to Hollyhock each year between May and October and Hollyhock Foundation CEO Dana Solomon tells me that her hope is that those who visit the retreat take the lessons learned “back into their homes and into their workplaces.”

Courses offered range from the practical (Cooking; Social Media for Social Change; Writing Your Memoir) to the much more esoteric (Earth Wisdom, Horse Wisdom; What to Remember When

Waking; Sacred Energy Arts).

At dinner on Saturday we finally see everyone who is currently staying at the retreat: about a dozen others in this shoulder season. A few are “seekers”—those that are there to get away and meditate or do whatever on their own time. Others are the karmic yogis—people who pay a small fee to say for the month, are required to work 22 hours a week, but get all the meals covered and can participate in yoga and other sessions on offer.

Dinner is a green and red salad with two dressings, one a yeast concoction I am told is “legendary and has been written about.” Fresh oysters pan-seared with two different sauces and fresh clam chowder and corn chowder along with luxuriously fresh Hollyhock bread make for the main meal, one that we are told is a particular treat as even seafood is rarely served.

Hollyhock is a place to go for, pardon the cliché, a good spiritual rejuvenation. It’s not

a place you would necessarily go to if you require creature comforts morning, noon and night. But having said that, the retreat is not without its decadent, if off-thegrid, pleasures: delicious food, oceanside hot tubs, a driftwood littered beach and, I almost forgot to mention, spa treatments galore. ◗ For more information about what is on offer and how to get there, visit www. hollyhock.ca.
