Burnaby MLA Kathy Corrigan is saddened by news that NDP leader Carole James is stepping down. “I think it’s tragic. I think she was a wonderful leader, a wonderful colleague for whom I have a great deal of respect,” Corrigan said. “But Carole, as always, thought first of her party. And for that reason she stepped down.” The news came Monday, following an acrimonious week with the NDP after longtime MLA Jenny Kwan publicly aired criticism of James as leader. “Under Carole James’ leadership, there has been a steady erosion of our democratic principles. Debate has Kathy Corrigan been stifled, decisionNDP MLA making centralized, and individual MLAs marginalized,” Kwan wrote. “As well, for too long there has been a clear lack of direction under the leadership of Carole James. Whenever a challenging policy decision arises, often the default position is to avoid taking a stand.” Kwan wasn’t the only one with issues - in all, 13 New Democrat MLAs were questioning James’s leadership. James responded by calling for a caucus meeting this past weekend to hold MLAs responsible, but that meeting never happened. Instead, there were private discussion resulting in James announcing Monday that she would step down as leader. “She decided with the lack of support

City entrepreneurs on second season of renting out live potted Christmas trees Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter

The Christmas tree at the Vancouver Aquarium is more than just green in colour – it is green in practice, too. The live tree, which is lit up by the electric eels feeding in the tank beside it, comes from a Burnaby Christmas tree recycling business. UBC forestry grad Sean Macalister started Evergrow Christmas Trees Co. last year with his friend, Jeff Ferguson. The company rents out potted, live trees to corporate and residential customers. Clients order the tree online, and Evergrow drops the tree off before Christmas and picks it up afterwards. Evergrow was a success in its first season, Macalister says. “(It) went better than expected,” he says. “We sold out within two weeks.” The condition of the returned trees was quite good, he says, with 95 per cent in “fine” if not perfect shape. The other five per cent had not been properly cared for and died, he says. The trees that are not in good enough condition to rent out again, but are still alive, are planted in places in need of trees; near Still Creek in Burnaby, in Stanley Park and near Jericho Beach, Macalister says. Business continued throughout the year, past last Christmas, as well. “We provided trees to the Olympics,” Macalister says, adding the company has also supplied staging companies and wed-

dings with live trees. “I was quite surprised by the demand for trees year-round.” The company has expanded with five new employees this season and may hire more in the future, he says. Six varieties of live potted trees ranging in price from $125 to $195, from five to seven feet tall, were available for residents on the Evergrow site as of Dec. 2. The cost includes delivery and pickup and maintenance of the trees throughout the year. Evergrow also sells cut trees over seven feet tall; according to Macalister, potted trees can only remain healthy up to seven feet.

Cut trees range in height from seven to nine feet, and in price from $130 to $295 (with stand and setup). The cut trees are turned into biofuel after Christmas, which heats greenhouses in Langley, Macalister says. He is preparing for another busy year; about half of the company’s 500 trees were sent out to corporate clients on Dec. 1. Evergrow has also agreements to sell small, decorated potted trees through Capers and Whole Foods this year, and the company’s website is selling eco-friendly wooden ornaments that are made by women living in the Downtown Eastside of

Vancouver. “It’s a win-win, for sure,” he says of the ornament sales. Macalister hopes to expand the company to Victoria and Toronto in the future, but he notes there are problems with maintaining healthy potted trees in Toronto’s climate, so the company may need to go in a different direction there. Overall, he’d like the company to “get a little bit bigger,” so long as he and Ferguson can maintain the quality of service Evergrow’s customers expect, he says. But it’s been a decision that I’ve made in the best interests of the party,” she wrote. “Most importantly, it’s been made in the best interests of British Columbians, who expect and deserve a functioning Opposition. They’re not getting that right now in this province.” James will stay on until the caucus chooses an interim leader, likely in the new year, and presumably the party will call a leadership convention, Corrigan said. I could or should say that the following is only my opinion, but the facts are clear. The reason that the NDP is in public turmoil has little to do with Jenny Kwan but everything to do with a totally ineffectual leader. Jenny Kwan and other dissidents merely point this out. Now to my opinion. Providing that the loyalists wake up, the current public mess will result in some serious self-evaluation, which in the long run will establish a viable party. There has been a lot of hand-wringing about the poor voter turnout. I suspect that a lot of people feel like I do and have just thrown up their hands in

frustration. I have not voted in the last two provincial elections because, in my mind, one leader was a deceiver and the other an airhead. Nations Climate Change Conference in Cancun are seriously considering putting mirrors in space to reflect sunlight away from the earth and covering Greenland in a massive “blanket” so that it doesn’t melt. While extreme “geo-engineering” measures such as these may ultimately be necessary to combat climate change, it seems that before we resort to these measures we should first do everything we can to bring more of the planet’s untapped clean energy sources online. Here in B.C. alone we have a wealth of clean energy resources we could be contributing to global greenhouse gas reduction efforts: conventional hydro, run-ofriver hydro, wind, biomass, geothermal, wave, tidal, solar. You name it, we’ve got it. The carbon footprint of a typical runof-river facility, for example, is less than five grams of carbon dioxide per kilowatt-hour, or 100 times less than gas-fired generation and 200 times less than coalfired generation (see “Carbon Footprint of Electricity Generation,” United Kingdom

Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology). Besides which, clean energy technologies are well-proven and well-understood, and any potential impacts they may have can be easily mitigated. Can we really say the same for some of the “geo-engineering” options being considered by the UN’s climate scientists such as erecting artificial “trees” that suck carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere or building man-made volcanoes that spray sulphate particles high into the atmosphere to scatter the sun’s rays back into space in addition to putting mirrors in space? Considering that we’ve barely scratched the surface of the renewable clean energy resources we have available to us here in B.C., developing our untapped clean energy potential and helping neighbouring provinces and states reduce their greenhouse gas emissions seems like a no-brainer. It’s also a lot less complicated than building man-made volcanoes that spray sulphate particles into the atmosphere like some comic plot device from an Austin Powers movie. if they do come back to the fold, the relations between them and their caucus colleagues have become toxic. One reason for the visceral relations is that a male-dominated minority has forced a woman leader, who was supported by the majority, from office. Nine of the 13 dissidents are male. You can imagine the anger over this development that is now seething in certain quarters of the NDP, which was supposed to be a champion of feminist causes. To be sure, James’ leadership was dogged by questions about her ability to lead and her ability to win. But none of her detractors could point to any current evidence that there

was no way she could win the next election. Poll after poll has the NDP well ahead of the B.C. Liberals. While James has long had trouble with her approval ratings, so did Gordon Campbell while he was winning three elections. In the end, this was all about a faction of the NDP unwilling to give up control of the party and resisting James’s attempts to modernize it and move it more to the political centre. The shame of this is that it may well cost the NDP the next election. There is no doubt many people out there who do not want to give the B.C. Liberals a fourth term are now forced to look in despair at an alternative that is broken and, for now anyways, somewhat

discredited. James may well have won the next election, as the centre-right coalition of the B.C. Liberals is showing its own signs of cracking. But now we’ll never know for sure. The NDP now has to go through a potentially agonizing leadership race of its own. How’s this for a scenario: the next B.C. Liberal leader calls a snap election in March, catching the NDP either leaderless or engulfed with bitter internal strife. If the NDP loses the next vote, the party can look back at the minority-led coup that took out its first female leader as it searches for the reason for the loss. Mayor’s address focuses on growth, sustainability Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter

Burnaby’s mayor made his annual address to the city at Monday night’s council meeting. Mayor Derek Corrigan spoke about major developments underway in the city in 2010, such as projects in Burnaby’s four town centres. In the Metrotown area, Corrigan spoke about the large-scale development planned for Beresford Street, which is designed to include a public plaza. In the Brentwood area, the mayor mentioned Motif at Citi, a highrise at Lougheed Highway and Willingdon Avenue. Corrigan also referred to the hard work being done by the North Road Business Improvement Association in the Lougheed Highway and North Road area. He also mentioned the amount of growth at UniverCity on Burnaby Mountain, mentioning it is in the third phase of development, and also spoke about the new University Highlands Elementary School, calling it “a key highlight of growth in this area.” Corrigan also spoke about the growth in the Edmonds area, specifically the new Eastburn Community Centre, which has been approved for construction. “When complete, it will provide a much-needed resource,” he said, adding it is scheduled to be completed in 2012. He also referenced the Tommy Douglas library branch, which is now just over a year old. In terms of industrial growth in Burnaby, he spoke about new industrial and office space being developed in the Big Bend area, including 8.5 million square feet of industrial space that was added. Corrigan mentioned council’s commitment to financial, social and environmental sustainability, particularly in regards to the new social sustainability strategy and steering committee, which he called a “blue ribbon panel.” He talked about how the city is “shaped by transit, and connected by greenways.” He went on to speak about council’s commitment to affordable housing in the city. “We have a longstanding history of supporting affordable housing,” he

Construction on the new Eastburn Community Centre can begin, now that council has approved a contractor for the project. “It is something the community has been waiting for for a while,” Coun. NOTES FROM CITY HALL Crime reduction a success

Burnaby’s community policing crime reduction pilot project in the Royal Oak area has been a success, according to a report from the city’s community policing committee. The crime reduction initiative was developed in the fall of 2007 to address property crime issues in Burnaby. The pilot project in Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design was designed to be a physical infrastructure improvement project in a high-crime, commercial part of the city. The area is no longer a crime hotspot, according to the report, so the program will not continue in the area. Enforcement in the area has reduced business property crime, according to the report. The committee encouraged businesses in the area to continue to communicate and participate with the committee and report suspicious incidents to the Burnaby RCMP.

Rezoning rejected

An application to rezone a block located between Hurst Street, Dow Avenue, Victory Street and Sussex Avenue was rejected at Monday night’s council meeting. Support for the rezoning of the R5 and R9 district area to an R12 district did not

meet council’s requirements. The rezoning in the South Slope neighbourhood would have allowed property owners to build two houses on lots. The city requires that, if 100 per cent of residents affected do not respond, at least 50 per cent response is needed, with 70 per cent of those responding supporting the rezoning. As 53 per cent of property owners in the area did respond, the application met the first requirement, but the rezoning only got 69 per cent support, which didn’t meet the requirement. Coun. Colleen Jordan said the lack of support was no surprise to people living in that area.

Electoral officer named

Anne Skipsey, with the city clerk’s office, will once again be the chief electoral officer in the next municipal election. Skipsey also filled the position in the 2008 election. The choice was confirmed at council’s Monday night meeting, along with the pick for the deputy chief election officer. Lynne Axford, also a staff member in the city clerk’s office, has been chosen to take on that role. fter 11 years running Ramie’s Greek Restaurant at 9-4287 Kingsway in the Metrotown area, owner Ramie Saroya knows a thing or two about keeping his customers happy. “For all our take-out orders, I tell my staff to put in a little extra rice and vegetables because I don’t ever want to hear a customer say they didn’t get enough food,” said Saroya. “And when you come in for a meal, a lot of people have something left over for lunch the next day.” A recent sit-down with the genial cook revealed that there’s no job too small for Saroya. “I came to Canada from the Punjab (in India) in 1984, and I started working in Greek restaurants, starting as a dishwasher and moving my way up,” said Saroya. By 1999, Saroya wanted to run his own ship, and that’s when he opened Ramie’s, with an emphasis on fresh ingredients, all items made from scratch, large portions and affordable prices. As Saroya prepared our dinner and talked, I could see the care he took in each dish. First out was the dolmathes ($7.95), the meatstuffed grape leaves that were a meal in and of itself. With generous portions of pork and beef, the dolmathes are a great way to start a meal. Next came the calamari ($7.95), which was nicely deep-fried baby squid with tzatziki sauce. I thought I was finished with appies, but Saroya insisted I try the garlic prawns ($7.95), which were

A quick last-minute correction, as it appears we received some switchedabout information. Music students at Burnaby North are offering up their Christmas concerts, Jingle With The Beat, this week – which I noted in a recent column. However, I just heard from the school that in fact the original notice had

some information changed. The first concert, which was last night (Tuesday, Dec. 7) featured the jazz band, string orchestra and choir. The second concert, which is at 7 p.m. tonight (Wednesday, Jan. 8) features the marching and concert bands. So anyone who expected the marching and concert bands last night – well, it’s not too late, as you can hear them tonight istead! Meditation can help you to get a handle on emotions HEALTHWISE

e all have our secret selves – the parts of ourselves we keep concealed from the rest of the world. But there are parts of yourself of which even you are unaware. You are more than you appear to be. You are a unique complex of conflicting thoughts, emotions and sensations, some of it on the surface, much of it hidden even from your own awareness. Deeper still lies a part of yourself that can make sense of it all, where meaning, purpose and peace reside. But to access that deeper self, you must first attend to your present, how you feel at this moment. In my last column, I introduced my approach to meditation with seven questions. So in answer to my first question, “What do I feel?”, feel your breath. Attending to the simple act of breathing, you can attain just enough distance to look clearly at your present state – the feelings you are experiencing at this moment. Normally, you breathe without thinking about it, but when you shift your consciousness to the effortless flow of air through your nose and into your lungs and the natural flow from your lungs through your nose, you will find that you can control not only the rhythm of your breaths but the pace of your thoughts. You can feel a rise in your positive energy while you release your tensions. Mindful breathing can serve as a time-out when the pace of the day’s activities, your own thoughts, or your present feelings seem overwhelming. The pauses between breathing in, breathing out and breathing in again can represent the still point – the centre where you can take a step back and see yourself – your feelings, thoughts and actions at this moment. What are you feeling? What emotions are controlling you? Is it anger? Does it come from frustrations where reality doesn’t live up to your expectations? Is it from the behaviour of others or circumstances

over which you have no control? What are the thoughts that underlie your anger? Is there another way of thinking about the situation? Could you be reacting to the present with the feelings of the past?

Are you anxious? Does this arise from feeling unprepared or just feeling rushed? We can’t control everything in life, but there are many things we can. We sometimes just forget we have a choice. Where do your choices lie? Are

you taking on too much? Are you able to say no when someone asks you to do something you just can’t fit into your day? Are you able to ask for help? At any given time, we need just the right amount of challenge to feel

engaged. If you don’t have enough challenge in your day, you’re bored. When the challenge exceeds your resources, you’re stressed. By taking a time out to feel your breath, you can bring down your anxiety a notch and reflect on your

The first black woman athlete to represent Canada in international competition has been chosen to be inducted into the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame. Barbara Howard, 90-years young, represented Canada at the 1938 British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Sydney, Australia as a 17-year-old sprinter and although not coming home with a medal in the 100 yards, she did return with two relay medals, a silver and a bronze. She had entered the Games as the fastest woman sprinter in the Empire a f t e r recording an 11.2 second time in the 100 at the Western BEG trials. She finished fifth in the BEG final. The voyage to reach Sydney took one month aboard a ship. Joining Howard in the athlete category is hockey player Karl Alzner and boxer Des Archer. The Burnaby Sport’s Hall of Fame induction dinner is being held Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Burnaby Firefighters Hall at Metrotown. Alzner, now playing in the NHL with the Washington Capitals, won two World Junior hockey championship gold medals with Team Canada, the last as team captain. He was also named the Western Hockey League’s top player and Canadian Hockey League top defenceman in 2008. Alzner was drafted in the first round, fifth overall, by the Capitals in 2007. Archer was one of the finest boxers ever produced in Canada. Coached in Burnaby by sports hall of fame member Harry Twist, Archer won just about every amateur title out there, including Diamond Belt, Golden Gloves and

a Canadian championship. Overall, he won more than 50 fights. Being inducted into the Builder category are Burnaby Winter Club organizer Lynn Mason and renowned sport physiotherapist Alex McKechnie. As a curler, Mason took his rink to both provincial and Canadian playoffs. As an organizer, Mason was a member of the committee that organized the first 75and 80-plus hockey tournament, believed to be the first such tournament of its kind in the world. McKechnie has served as physiotherapist for SFU’s NAIA teams, Vancouver Whitecaps N A S L teams, and the 1976 Canadian Olympic soccer team. He opened a private practice in Burnaby in 1977 specializing in orthopaedics and sports medicine and became so well known that many of his clients included star European soccer and NBA players. Being inducted into the Coaches category are boxing’s Manny Sobral and soccer’s Frank Palmieri. Co-founder of the North Burnaby boxing club, Sobral has coached his athletes to more than 20 championships, including Glove, Gloves, B.C. Bronze, Silver and Golden Gloves titles, as well as provincial and Canadian championships. As a professional boxer, he established a record of 29 wins and just two losses. Palmieri has been a volunteer soccer coach in Burnaby for close to 30 years. During his coaching career, his teams have won nine Coastal and Provincial Cups and he led two teams to national championships. Being inducted into the Team category is the 2005 under-17 Burnaby Royals soccer team, which captured the coastal, provincial and national u-18 club Hall Page 28

St. Thomas More middle hitter Pamela Ho was named to the second all-star team at the B.C. high school AA girls’ volleyball championships in Kamloops last week. Ho had eight kills and no errors after the first game in STM’s 2-0 win over Holy Cross that placed them ninth overall. “Pam was outstanding. We just had momentum,” said STM head coach Danielle Bohemier. After finishing second in their pool with eventual No. 1 seed and fourth-place finisher Brentwood College, STM was beaten in three games by Mennonite Educational Institute in the crossover match. The loss put the Knights on the consolation side of the draw and a best possible ninth-place finish. “Our expectations are fairly high

but we don’t control what happens in that crossover round, but we wouldn’t have had an easy draw,” Bohemier added. The Knights rallied back, knocking off College Heights and host SaHali in straight sets before getting a second chance at redemption against Holy Cross in the final placement game. STM took that game 25-21, 25-18 to finish in ninth place. “It was nice to see Holy Cross, … they had beaten us twice in the season,” Bohemier said. Vikes finish in 11th

The Burnaby North Vikings finished up in 11th place at the B.C. high school AAA boys’ volleyball championships in Kelowna. North, the 10th seeded team, was eliminated by ninth-place finisher Penticton 25-18, 25-21 in the consolation placement draw. The Vikings finished second in Pool G, beating both North Peace and Vancouver Technical, but lost in straight sets to eventual No. 9 finisher Mount Boucherie. In the championship placement draw, North fell to eventual bronze medallist Riverside 25-19, 25-19, 2522. Semiahmoo won the AAA banner for a third time since 2005, sweeping Earl Marriot in straight sets in the championship final. Lower Mainland champion Eric Hamber placed eighth.

Burnaby South may lose its No. 1 provincial basketball ranking after a narrow defeat to Richmond’s R.C. Palmer in the final of the Point Grey Keenleyside Classic. The South Rebels fell 8179 to Palmer in the final of the pre-season boys’ hoop tournament Saturday. Manroop Claire and Grade 11 post Nick Irvine were named to the alltournament first team, while Daniel Edwards was selected to the all-defensive squad. “It was an awesome

game – back and forth, back and forth. We had a chance to win at the end, but the ball rolled around a couple of times, but wouldn’t fall,” said South head coach Greg Matic. South had little difficulty getting by David Thompson and Winston Churchill en route to the tournament final. Palmer had similar ease, beating Sentinel and host Point Grey on its side of the draw. South was without starting point guard Ater Degal at the tournament. “For the intensity and as the top two teams in the province, it was an oppor-

tunity for us as a team to learn how to figure things out and how to play under control,” Matic added. This week, South takes part at the HSBC tournament. The Rebels open against Handsworth at Charles Tupper Secondary today at 4:15 p.m. The New Westminster Hyacks are away to Kitsilano. The second round of the girls’ HSBC is underway at New Westminster Secondary, where the Hyacks are hosting Holy Cross, John Oliver and No. 2-ranked Riverside. Byrne Creek is at Vancouver Technical.

Nam Nguyen of Burnaby won a bronze medal at the Skate Canada Western and Eastern Challenge in Misssissauga, Ont. Dec. 4. The North Shore Winter Club skater was unable to match his winning 159point performance in the junior men’s program at the B.C. sectionals in November, garnering just 143.14 points, despite a second-best overall free skate. Samuel Angers of Quebec won the event, coming from fifth place after the short skate to post a 103.18 score in the long program. Pollux Yeung of Burnaby placed 17th in the junior

men’s division. Sectional runner-up Andrew Lum of Burnaby wound up 11th in the senior men’s skate. Lum was ninth after the short program. Madeline Edwards and Zhao Kai Pang of Burnaby won the novice dance with an 89.37 total score. Burnaby novice Caelen Dalmer and partner Shane Firus finished fourth in the dance competition at the Challenge. In the pre-novice men’s division, Adonis Wong of Burnaby also finished fourth behind three Quebec skaters. Ajax Wong placed 21st overall. Burnaby’s Kitty Qian had a top-10 finish in the junior women’s division,

placing ninth with a 104.44 total, nearly four points better than her fourthplace-finishing score at the sectionals. B.C. sectional gold-medalist, Janet Truong, failed to match her earlier form, finishing 28th overall, more than 16 points off her winning total. Qwynn Dalmer and Sara Aghai placed ninth in the junior dance won by B.C.’s Nicole Orford and Thomas Williams. Rika Inoda had a disappointing free skate, tumbling to 22nd-place in the senior women’s division, after sitting seventh following the short program. Nami Inoda was 26th in the novice women’s category.

New Westminster’s Sonia Sahota helped Team White to a 4-4 draw in the second annual female midget AAA hockey all-star game on Dec. 3. Team White tied the game against Team Blue with 10 minutes left in the third period. Steph Schaupmeyer of Kelowna was

named the game’s first star. Two Lower Mainland players took the second and third stars. Fraser Valley Phantom Siera Rai was the second star, while Sahota’s Vancouver Fusion teammate, Natasha Panahi, took the third. Two more of Sahota’s Fusion teammate’s were winners in the skills competition. Stephanie Payne was the fastest skater, while Cassidy Hendricks won the breakaway goalie challenge. Shea Weighill from Nakusp was the top shooter.

Born in Calgary, Alberta on December 24th, 1916, Albert (Al) passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 28, 2010 after a short battle with cancer. Al was predeceased by his wife Norma and many siblings. Al was a tremendous husband, father and friend and is survived by his 2 daughters, Yvonne Atkinson (George), Lynne Grohman; 3 grandchildren, Judi-Ann, Norman, Daniel; and 7 great-grandchildren. His companion over the past 11 years, Jo Bloom, will also miss him very much. Al was a veteran of the 2nd World War and was also very active in his communities (Burnaby & Coquitlam) in various volunteer capacities. He was recognized for his long time service with the Victim Assistance program in Burnaby by the RCMP. Al and Norma took in and fostered many young adults over the years. One young man, Art Pearson, was welcomed into the family as their son. Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Service to be held on Saturday, Dec 11th, 2010 at 2pm at Como Lake United Church, 535 Marmont St., Coquitlam, BC. Chances are, holiday revelers will find themselves underneath the mistletoe at least once this holiday season. While they might know what to do when that time comes, they might not know the history of that plant above their heads. Especially sacred to Celtic Druids, mistletoe was believed to bestow life and fertility, while also protecting against poison and serving as an aphrodisiac. Mistletoe would later take on a more

political meaning, as the ritual of cutting the mistletoe came to symbolize the emasculation of the old king by his successor. Nowadays, mistletoe is typically hung in doorways or entryways from one room to another.

This tradition can also trace itself back several centuries to the Middle Ages. During the Middle Ages, branches of mistletoe were hung from ceilings to ward off

evil spirits. Throughout Europe, mistletoe was placed over doorways in the house as well as the stables as a means to preventing the entrance of witches.
