Eye surgeons see operations cancelled Janaya Fuller-Evans

The Fraser Health Authority has cut the amount of elective surgeries some B.C. ophthalmologists are permitted to perform on a daily basis. The cancellations began on Oct. 29, and have affected surgeries at Burnaby General Hospital and Ridge Meadows Hospital in Maple Ridge.
The health authority said it has cancelled the scheduled elective surgeries of specific surgeons in response to on-call coverage issues mandated by their contract. The cancellations were made on a surgeon-by-surgeon basis to deal with specific on-call issues, according to David Plug, a Fraser Health media relations advisor. But Dr. Patrick Saunders, an ophthalmologist at Burnaby Hospital, said it has affected more than just a handful of surger-
ies, as suggested by Fraser Health. On Wednesday, Nov. 3 Dr. Saunders confirmed that the ophthalmologists at Burnaby Hospital were contacted last week and told that half of each doctor’s elective surgeries were cancelled by the health authority. One ophthalmologist, Dr. Arthur Pratt, was given his full slate back at the last minute. “We don’t know why,” Dr. Saunders
said. In his department, ophthalmologists each had five to 10 surgeries cancelled on Friday, Oct. 29 and Monday, Nov. 1, he said. When asked how many of the ophthalmologists were affected, he said, “All of them.” B.C. ophthalmologists and Fraser Health Eye surgeries Page 8

A CLOSER LOOK: STALLED DREDGING COST MILLIONS BUT HAS REAPED SCIENTIFIC SIDE BENEFITS
Tracking the turtles O
n a bridge over Deer Lake Brook, biologist Karen Truman unfolds her antenna and attaches it to a small, box-like radio receiver. Truman works for ENKON Environmental, the consultants hired to keep an eye on Burnaby Lake’s fish and the endangered Western painted turtles while the city completes a massive dredging project. Truman pulls out a small piece of paper with codes written in pencil. Each one responds to a turtle they’ve caught and tagged for tracking purposes. Each tagged turtle gets its own radio frequency, so all Truman has to do is tune in to the right channel to find the turtle she’s looking ON MY BEAT for. With the antenna Jennifer Moreau pointed south over the brook, the receiver box starts bleeping like a weak, electronic heartbeat. “See,” she says excitedly, honing in on “M24” – an adult male turtle somewhere in the tributary. “Isn’t that wild? He’s not very far. Whoa, he’s close.” We can’t actually see M24, he’s underwater, but the bleeping receiver assures us he’s there. The species Truman is tracking was at the centre of a controversy last year, which put the brakes on the city’s multimillion-dollar dredging project for about five months. The provincial Environment Ministry held up one remaining permit over concerns that the red-listed species was in harm’s way while the dredging was set to start. The holdup cost the city millions of dollars, while the contractor’s equipment sat idle by the lake, and a squabble broke out between thenenvironment minister Barry Penner and Mayor Derek Corrigan. The city brought in ground-penetrating radar from Italy, which had to be specially adjusted for use on water, to make sure there were no turtles hiding in the mud before the dredging began. So far, none has been found with the radar, but 32 have been tagged in the past five months. And for the first time in the Pacific region, biologists like Truman are intimately tracking this endangered species and collecting data that may help protection efforts. “This study is very important, and nothing’s been done like this before,” Truman said. According to a 2006 report from the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada, there are fewer than 500 known Western painted turtles in Canada, and only 129 in B.C. Burnaby Lake holds one of the biggest known populations in the region with at least 50 turtles, possibly up to 100, although no one knows for sure because ENKON is still collecting data. On the coast, the main threat to the turtles is road construction and the loss, degradation and fragmentation of wetland habitat. Their numbers appear to be declining, according to COSEWIC. 6

T
he turtles have been known to bury themselves in the mud during winter, and the fear was that dredging Burnaby Lake would literally chop them to bits. Apparently, the turtles were active throughout winter, even when the lake was covered with ice, says Lambert Chu, the city’s engineering director. “Definitely for those people who believe the painted turtle hibernates by burying itself in the mud, that’s not the correct conclusion based on observations,” Chu said. What they have observed is that the turtles move into the tributaries where the water is shallower and there’s more vegetation at the end of August or in early September. They also like the area where the lake drains into the Brunette River. They don’t use the middle waters much, unless it’s summer and they need a “transportation corridor” – as Chu puts it – to get from one side of the lake to the other. They even have a favourite log in Deer Zellers Visions* Home Outfitters* The Bay* Shoppers* Safeway* Rona* * not in all areas
Lake Brook to sunbathe on when the weather is nice. If there are any turtles found in the active dredge zones, ENKON has to move them to a tank in the project’s treatment facility by the shore. Truman says there was only one found in an inactive zone, but it moved before dredging started. “They’ve been proven to swim across (an inactive) dredge zone, climb over a silt curtain and be on their way,” she says. Biologist and turtle expert Vanessa Kilburn first raised concerns about the dredging project potentially harming the endangered turtles. She says it’s important to know that before this study was done, nobody knew much about the movement and overwintering habitat use of the turtles on the Coast. “All of our information on the species comes from

interior Canadian and American populations that overwinter in very cold conditions, with thick ice that forms and stays all winter long. “In those locations the turtles do bury into the mud to hibernate, and there is tons of scientific literature on that. Because no information was available on the species’ hibernation needs on the coast, scientists – like (those) at the Ministry of Environment – had to make a judgment call since the species is redlisted, and that judgment call was made based on the only available information we had,” she says. “It is lucky for the city – and the turtles – that they do not appear to do the same thing on the coast, or at least not in Burnaby Lake. But before this study was done, nobody knew what they did, and so we had to take precautions to ensure that the turtles were not killed.” While the city’s position has been that they did what the Environment Ministry asked of them, Kilburn says Burnaby was told in early summer to do a radio-telemetry study to track the turtles before dredging started. “If they had listened in the first place, none of the holdup and loss of money would have occurred,” she says. Meanwhile, two dredge machines work in tandem, 16 hours a day, pulling up sludge from the bottom of the lake. Chu expects the project to be finished in March 2011. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Kudos for columnist
Dear Editor:
Re: Why did Basi-Virk get a break?, In my Opinion, Burnaby NOW, Nov. 6. I applaud you for printing Ms. Daubs’ column about the Basi-Virk trial. In my opinion, the prominent politicians were about to be called, and then more heat would be brought to the Liberal government. So a deal was made, and now they hope it all just fades away. Electors have short memories. W. Sims, Burnaby
Liberals won’t change Dear Editor:
I have to admit that I was happy with the news that Gordon Campbell is stepping down. But on further reflection, I realized that all this means is the B.C. Liberals will convince the public that their mismanagement of B.C. is due to one man rather than the Liberal party and who pays their bills. The bottom line is that the B.C. Liberals receive over 90 per cent of their fundingfrom corporations and the rich. If Gordon Campbell hadn’t been their front person for the last decade, they would have found someone else to put through their agenda. Lower taxes for corporations and the rich, a $2 billion tax shift from corporations to individuals, ripping up union contracts, and mass privatizations would have still been the agenda of the B.C. Liberals no matter who took the helm of the party. I think the lesson for British Columbians
I don’t expect any candidates to say they will repeal the HST, but don’t be surprised if at least one of them promises to shave a point or two off the tax within a couple of years or perhaps even moves up the date of the HST referendum. I also think there’s a chance at least one candidate will promise to raise the minimum wage and perhaps even slow the growth of the carbon tax. Campbell would be against all these actions, but the candidates must realize they have to pay attention to the voters – not their outgoing boss. ◆ What does all this mean for Carole James and the NDP? Cameron station is needed Dear Editor:
Re: City ups the ante on the Evergreen Line, Burnaby NOW, Oct. 27. I was pleased to read that Burnaby city council has requested that a SkyTrain station at Cameron Street be included when the Evergreen Line is constructed. Burnaby city council previously approved a substantial amount of high density development in the Cameron and North Road area in reliance upon assurances from TransLink that a station at Cameron Street was part of the Evergreen Line plan. When the Evergreen Line was changed from a light rail surface design to a SkyTrain system, it was unconscionable for TransLink to arbitrarily delete the Cameron station from the plan. Personally, I would have been reluctant to approve high density development for that area without the assurance that eventually a rapid transit station would be built there. I say it is time for TransLink to fulfil its obligation to the people of Burnaby and build the Cameron Street station. Garth M. Evans, Burnaby

here is that in the coming months, the B.C. Liberals will be trying to distance themselves from Campbell, while still pursuing the same agenda. There might be a few changes like a small hike in the minimum wage, but overall, not much will change until the Liberals have been thrown out of government.
Campbell’s decision has dealt an unexpected and potentially crippling blow to James’s leadership. If Campbell had remained in office until next fall, James would have found it much, much easier to stare down any internal revolt as well as the vote at the party’s convention on whether or not to hold a leadership convention. But with Campbell gone, there is a good possibility the B.C. Liberals will begin to rise in the polls. I don’t think they’ll surpass the NDP in the polls anytime soon, but even closing the gap to make it appear the next election will be competitive will cause a lot of New Democrats to go into panic mode.
And that could be bad news for James. She keeps saying she never expected Campbell to run in 2013, but his decision to quit early has upset the timetable of her ongoing campaign to hang onto her job and stare down her detractors. ◆ Will the next election actually be in 2013? This is by no means a lock. Yes, the date is established in legislation, but a new B.C. Liberal leader could easily move the date up, using the argument he or she needs a mandate from the voters. ◆ Who will win the leadership race to succeed Gordon Campbell? Ask me later. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global B.C.

Things to do this weekend
Eye surgeries: Doctor says ministry must step in continued from page 1
have been in negotiations regarding on-call coverage since April. There are four on-call areas for ophthalmologists usually covered by Fraser Health, Dr. Saunders said; Fraser North, Fraser South, Fraser East and retinal – which is covered separately. Ophthalmologists were told that Fraser Health could only finance coverage for three of the four areas in April, he said. This means ophthalmologists would not be paid for on-call coverage in one area. The doctors opted that no one get paid for on-call coverage – except for the separate coverage for retinal issues – until an agreement is reached. So far, there hasn’t been any discussion between the two groups since April. “At the negotiation session in April, they said, this is your problem, not ours,” Dr. Saunders said. Ophthalmologists from Chilliwack to Burnaby have not been paid for on-call hours since then, he added. The Fraser Health Ophthalmology Group responded by not covering Royal Columbian or Eagle Ridge hospitals directly for on-call work. What this means, he explained, is that the doctors would not respond to on-call pages from Fraser Health for those hospitals, and the health authority would have to call the B.C. Bedline, which would then contact the ophthalmologist. The doctors still provide on-call services to the two hospitals, Dr. Saunders said. It is a small inconvenience, he said, adding Fraser Health responded with the surgery cancellations. “They’re obviously doing this to punish us,” Dr. Saunders said. “It’s not punishing us at all.” He said the people who are really affected are the patients, some who had booked as far back as January for their procedures. Dr. Saunders also took
issue with the Fraser Health’s suggestion in last week’s web story that ophthalmologists could, and should, reschedule the surgeries. “That’s not true,” he said. According to Dr. Saunders, he received an email telling him the health authority would not accommodate rescheduling. Even if Fraser Health did, he said, he has a six- to eight-month waiting list as it is. So it isn’t possible to fit the cancelled surgeries into his schedule in a timely manner. Half of his surgeries were also cancelled for Friday, Nov. 5, he said in an interview last Wednesday.
Things won’t change unless the Ministry of Health steps in, Dr. Saunders said. Dr. Kevin Parkinson, spokesperson for the Fraser Health Ophthalmology Group, also had his scheduled surgeries at Ridge Meadows Hospital decreased by about half last week, he said in a phone interview last Wednesday. He is an ophthalmology specialist with operating privileges at Ridge Meadows Hospital. Normally, Dr. Parkinson does 20 cataract surgeries in a day, he said, but that day he did 10, and finished his day by 11:15 a.m. According to a followup e-mail, a total of 48 surgeries were cancelled last week.
Patients are reacting with “anger and disbelief,” he added. Only a small number of ophthalmologists who have not been complying with on-call requirements have been affected, said Plug, a spokesperson for Fraser Health. Plug confirmed there has been a reduction in elective surgical time at the two hospitals. The health authority is working to contact the individual surgeons and ascertain why they haven’t been fulfilling their on-call requirements, Plug added. The issue is affecting “a handful of patients a day, at most,” he said. “If there are people whose surgeries are postponed, we regret that.”

On a mission
O
K, Burnaby, now’s your chance to help some Burnaby North Secondary students achieve a heartfelt mission. Just got an e-mail from Claire Myers, a Grade 12 student at Burnaby North, alerting us to the fact that some students from the school have entered a contest to get Marianas Trench to come to the school and play a show. Marianas Trench, by the way, is their “favourite band in the whole world,” Claire tells me, so it would mean a lot to them to have your help. Morgan Oehlshlager and Haley Martin have entered the contest through the website Garage – and the mission is to get as many people as possible to vote for them. Check out http://getloud. garage.ca/entry/3396985 to help them win. Thanks to Claire, Morgan and Haley for thinking of us to help them spread the word!
Oops, that was a ‘z’
Quick note to apologize for a goof in a website address that ran in a story on Saturday. The story about Kasandra Lea and Mozaico Flamenco (Flamenco erases cultural lines, Nov. 6, Burnaby NOW) included a link to the Mozaico Flamenco website – but I typed it wrong. If you want to find out more about the group, check out www. mozaicoflamenco.com. (Anyone who tried www.mosaicoflamenco. com, which is what I typed, will have found themselves on an Italian site based in Milan. Oops.) For those who didn’t see the story, Kasandra is a lifelong Burnaby resident who’s now the artistic director of Mozaico Flamenco’s Café de Chinitas series. While I’m at it, congratulations to Elsa Fogale and Samantha Weng, who won free tickets to Mozaico Flamenco’s Viñetas del Mozaico show through a contest on my blog. The show runs Nov. 12, 13 and 14 at the Scotiabank Dance Centre in Vancouver. You can check out more on my blog. Do you have an item for Lively City? Vancouver Winter Chamber Music Festival on this week at Kingsway Foursquare Church Julie MacLellan staff reporter
Wherever she goes in the world, Jennifer Lim encounters the same reaction to her work as a concert pianist. Whether it’s New York City or Europe or Asia, there’s always someone who’ll come up to her after a performance and say, “I never knew classical music could be like that.” “You always get people coming up to you and saying, ‘I’ve always had this fear of coming to classical concerts,’” Lim says. She admits that many people see classical music as an elitist sort of pastime with rigid rules attached – you have to dress up, you aren’t allowed to clap. She laughs a little as she says classical music has a “scary” reputation, but she’s serious about her determination to change it. Lim is the artistic director of the Vancouver Music and Arts Society, which is staging the Vancouver Winter Chamber Music Festival 2010 this coming week in Burnaby. The festival is on Nov. 11, 13 and 14 at Kingsway Foursquare Church and features concerts by eight artists – six established concert professionals and two young emerging artists from British Columbia. Alongside Lim will be pianist Grace Chung, flutist Lorna McGhee, violinist Erin Keefe, violinist/violist Tien-Hsin (Cindy) Wu and cellist Peter Wiley. They’ll be joined by two young cellists, 21-year-old UBC student Luke Kim, and 20-year-old Benjamin Louwersheimer of Abbotsford. “It’s a really great group of people,” Lim says, noting she’s thrilled for the chance to bring the artists together in Burnaby. “I’ve always wanted to start something like this here.” Lim is based in New York City now but returns frequently to Burnaby to stay with her parents, who live in the city. She staged the festival last year in the Lower Mainland as well, with concerts in North Vancouver and Vancouver, but had a hankering to find a venue in Burnaby that would work. Kingsway Foursquare Church is perfect, she says – an intimate space with a good piano, and in a Metrotown-area location she hopes will make it accessible to people from all over the region. The three concerts – each one is at 8 p.m. – feature top classical chamber works, with a focus this year on Mozart. The program for Thursday’s concert includes Mozart’s Flute Quartet in D Major, while Saturday has his Sonata for Four Hands in D Major and Piano Quartet No. 1 in G Minor, and Sunday features the Flute Quartet in C Major. Lim is hoping that Mozart – whom she describes as more “approachable” than some other classical composers – will prove to be a draw for audiences. She wants to help demonstrate to people that classical music isn’t something mysterious or dull but rather, the expression of the truest “universal language.” “It’s a great way to connect and to express,” she says, noting there’s nothing like music to convey emotion. “It just speaks so readily.”

Connecting through music: Jennifer Lim is a concert pianist who’s organizing the Vancouver Winter Chamber Music Festival this week in Burnaby.
She recalls one concert last year where a man who had no background in classical music came up to her afterwards and told her that the music had made him cry. He didn’t know where it had come from, she says, but the music touched something profound in him. “That really means something to me. That’s also what I want to share with people,” she says. “It could be such a wide range of emotions – music does have that power.” Plus, she says, she wants to give people something fun to do. “The world has a lot of drama in it,” she says with a laugh. “I want it to be a way of having people come and enjoy themselves, relax a little bit.” For Lim, the festival is also a chance to lend a helping hand to emerging artists who are making their way in the world of classical music. Giving Kim and Louwersheimer a chance to perform with the others is her way of helping to open doors in what can often be a difficult world.
She notes that being a success in music takes not only talent, discipline and practice but also opportunity. “You have to be meeting the right people, given the right opportunity at the right time,” she says. “I want to create some chances for people who are really young and are so talented.” Lim notes she wouldn’t be where she is today if people hadn’t opened up opportunities for her over the years. She grew up in Coquitlam, where she went to Dr. Charles Best Elementary and Centennial Secondary schools. She started studying piano at age four-and-a-half, and she credits longtime piano teacher Jane Coop for being an inspiration. “She gave so generously,” Lim says. In high school, Lim’s music teacher gave her a chance to accompany the school choir – a job that brought her to the attention of other groups around the area and led to steady work as a choral accompanist for various groups, including Les Échos du Chamber Music Page 19

love Thai food for many reasons: the spicy curry, the innovative use of meats and the usual friendliness of Thai restaurant servers.
Several years ago, when I first went to Green Basil Thai for dinner, I marvelled at how many different choices I had. That hasn’t changed one iota because there are still 70-plus dishes featuring everything from ostrich and duck to squid and New Zealand mussels served with curry, noodles, rice or varying degrees of hot chili sauce. Manager Daniel Chow is still looking far and wide
for anything new and innovative that can go on the menu. “We have tried Thai restaurants all across the world, including in Thailand and Hong Kong,” said Chow. “Any time we find something that we like, we’ll put it on the menu and give it a try.” Chow and chef Ming Zheng have parlayed their decades of experience in Green Basil Page 13

TASTE Green Basil: Tastes of Thailand continued from page 12
Thai restaurants to craft a menu that allows diners to experiment and enjoy a wide variety of Thai dishes. On a recent weekday, I decided to give an old neighbourhood haunt another try. I was pleasantly surprised because when my dining companion ordered the fried rice with fresh pineapple, peanuts and raisins topped with pork, all I could think of was: Pineapples and raisins with my rice? Really? Well, the dish was simply fantastic. I also tried a Green Basil specialty, the seafood medley ($15.50), which features tiger prawns, clams, New Zealand mussels, scallops, squid and fresh cod. On Chow’s recommendation, I also tried a second rice dish, relatively new to the menu, which featured yellow curry powder and egg white flakes. “One of our most popular dishes because it’s not

Holiday season a time to give back to community by Maegan Thomas
And of course, the Heights Merchants Association has its annual Light up the Heights festival beginning with the tree lighting on Dec. 4 and continuing on Dec 11 and 18. If you’d like to volunteer, call 604-204-8899. Remember, this isn’t the only time to give back to your community – there are opportunities with all these organizations in every season. Every program has different volunteer application requirements, so get in touch as soon as possible to be ready for the holidays.. Maegan Thomas is acting marketing and events coordinator at the Heights Merchants’ Association.
Mansion, Nov. 27 and 28 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This festive event benefits the Action Line Housing Society, a non-profit society that provides much needed affordable supportive and assisted living housing for seniors at Seton Villa. If you are interested in helping with this project or for more opportunities with Seton Villa, contact Ann Matthewson at 604-291-0650 or info@setonvilla.com by Nov. 15.
The Heights Contributor
The holiday is a great time to share in all the wonderful events and good will in our community. One way to share this good will is to be a volunteer and give the gift of your time to your favourite community organization. Here are a few to consider: Burnaby Community Connections organizes the Burnaby Christmas Bureau each year. Their Angel Program, which collects and delivers toys to children, is looking for volunteer drivers to deliver collected toys around Burnaby. No specific experience is necessary. The Christmas Bureau is also looking for volunteers for their Fill-a-Stocking Fundraising Auction on Dec. 16, from 5 to 7 p.m. For information, contact Justine Marshal at Justine@burnabycommunityconnections.com. Another Heights tradition is Christmas at Overlynn
Volunteer Burnaby is providing gift wrapping by donation from Dec. 3 to 24 at Brentwood Town Centre, and volunteers are needed to wrap, supervise and check in gifts. Training sessions are on Nov.17 for wrappers and Nov. 24 for supervisors. Volunteer Burnaby is also marking International Volunteer Day with a weekend long celebration starting on Dec. 3. For more information, contact lee@volunteerburnaby.ca or 604294-5533 or visit them on Facebook.

Adoption fee includes vaccines By Niki Hope
The Heights Reporter
Van Pet Centre in the Heights is helping abandoned cats find a forever home. The Hastings Street pet store is using its space to house a cat (or two, or three) for the Action for Animals Society. Van Pet owners Paul and Esther Lee are allowing cats to live in the store until they are adopted out. Since the store started housing the adoptive cats four months ago, about 25 cats, of all ages, have been adopted. “We have a really big cage in front of the store. Right now, I have an adorable motor with fur on it … named Lucky,” Van Pet store manager Tamara Gillis said last month. Ten-week-old Lucky was found abandoned in a field, dehydrated and lethargic.

Lucky has lived up to its name because the black-andwhite kitten was quickly scooped up and given a new home. As of last week, the store had three frisky 16-week-old felines up for adoption. The cats are free to wander around the spacious store throughout the day and are locked in a cage at night, Gillis said. The adoption fee is $175 and includes spaying/neutering, de-worming, de-fleaing, a tattoo and shots. The money goes directly to Action for Animals, Gillis said. Royal Canine pet food supplier is supporting the store’s efforts by donating pet food for the cats. “They support us and donate the food, and we supply the litter,” Gillis said.
In keeping with its tradition of helping animals, the store is hosting its annual pet picture with Santa Claus fundraiser on Saturday, Dec. 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Every dollar raised goes toward animal charities, with participants making a direct donation. The event will include candy for two-legged kids – who can also have their picture taken if wanted – and Starbucks-donated coffee and hot chocolate. Gillis’s husband, Doug Gillis, plays Santa, while she takes the photos. All pets are welcome. They’ve had every kind of animal turn up to have a memorable pet pic with Santa. Photos are either e-mailed or pet owners can come and pick the photos up at the store, which is located at 4111 Hastings St.

MOTORING Doing it yourself isn’t always worth it CLICK & CLACK TALK CARS Ray & Tom Magliozzi
Dear Tom and Ray: We have a 2006 Chrysler Town and Country van. Is it OK to buy and replace the original battery ourselves? Or is this a job for the professionals? We just bought and replaced the battery in our five-year-old John Deere lawn tractor with no problem, so I am thinking we could do this ourselves, too. My husband says no – that things have to be reset on a vehicle. Is he right? We plan to replace the battery before winter either way; it was sluggish on cold days last winter. We both read and learn from your column. Thank you. – Jan RAY: Well, it’s something you can do yourself, Jan, but I’m not sure it’s worth it for the small amount of money you’d save. TOM: The downside of replacing the battery yourself is that you lose all of your stored settings. That means all of your radio-station presets will play 87.9, your power seat settings will be all the way back in the tooth-drilling position, and if you have a navigation system and you hit the “take me home” button, you’ll end up at the Chrysler plant in Windsor, Ontario. RAY: Obviously, all of those settings can be re-entered. But you’ll also lose the memory in your engine monitors. That’s what your husband probably is referring to. TOM: Your engine’s computer keeps a record of things like engine misfires and oxygen-sensor performance and confirms that,

over time, your emissioncontrol system is doing its job. And if you remove the battery, those settings disappear. RAY: The computer will start recording them all over again as soon as the new battery is installed. But if you happen to need a state
emissions inspection soon after changing the battery, you may be turned away. The computer requires a certain number of engine on-and-off cycles to confirm that your emission controls are working. And if you haven’t driven enough

cycles, you may have to go away and keep driving for a while before you can get a sticker. TOM: To avoid this, you can go to an auto-parts store and buy, for $15 or $20, a little device that takes a nine-volt battery, plugs into your cigarette lighter and provides enough power to maintain your battery settings while you swap the batteries. We’ve got a professional version of that at the garage, which plugs into computer’s data port. RAY: But for a little more than that, you can have a local garage or Sears do the whole job for you, including saving your settings, disposing of the old battery and taking responsibility if they hook it up backward and set your car on fire. And you get to drink their putrid coffee in the
waiting room to boot. TOM: So it’s up to you, Jan. But do the math first. Get a price from your local shop and see how much it’d charge you for the whole job. Then get a price on the battery, the settings saver and a bottle of Gojo to wash the grease off your

Yamal Reta of Byrne Creek Secondary had the highest placing of any Burnaby/New Westminster runner at the B.C. high school cross-country championships in Victoria on Saturday. Reta placed 31st overall in the boys’ 6.7 kilometre run, placing just ahead of zone winner Travis Fraser of Burnaby South in a time of 23:04.49. Fraser placed 34th, more than three seconds behind Reta. Sofia Stevenson led the BNW district girls, finishing in 54th overall spot for the Burnaby Central team. Nicole Di Spirito of Burnaby North placed in the top 100, finishing 99th overall in the girls’ 4.6

km race. William Cliff of St. George’s won the individual boys’ title, finishing ahead of teammate Christian Gravel. St. George’s took the overall boys’ team title over runner-up Oak Bay. Justin Hayto of Burnaby placed 39th overall for St. George’s in the 6.7 km race. Zone winner New Westminster Secondary placed 22nd in the team standings. Jacob Yout led the Hyacks with a time of 24:47, while Sergiy Patoka and MacKenzie Stevens were next at 25:15 and 25:32, respectively. Christopher PoljerSo, Grady Cahill and Garrett Cahill also competed for New West. The Burnaby Central boys placed 29th. They were led by Santiago Ward and Ryan Hirakida,
who crossed the finish line in 25:48. Andrew Santos, Cole Grabinsky and Nima Boscarino also contributed to the Central team score. Ayrton Bundrock and Rathan Sri Varathan also competed. Alpha Secondary’s Jason Frason-Maraun was the third fastest district runner, finishing 113th in 24:44.75. Moscrop’s Cameron Prozeviat was 124th in 24:55.65. Byrne Creek’s Samir Aslami and Richard Wang of Cariboo Hill also finished. West Point Grey Academy upset defending three-time provincial champion Oak Bay. Dover Bay finished in third place. The Central girls beat zone champion New Westminster in the team category, placing in 24th spot. New West placed 26th over-
all. Sara Pomponio finished behind Steveson in a time of 19:24. Cali Stinson, Hannah McGee and Bajan Oates also counted towards the team’s overall time. Anna Lintz also competed for Central. Gabby Napolene was the top New Westminster runner, finishing in a time of 19:02. Natasha Lazecki finished 10 seconds back. J’Nelle Poljer-So, Amanda Zucharuk and Kelsey Lonergan completed the team’s five-best times. Kamila Rogic-McLean and Devon Ellis-Durity also ran for New West. Aden Cotter, Tamai Baptiste and Amandeep Purewal of Moscrop, Alice Fu and Nicolette Love of South and Julia Hodanikic of Burnaby Mountain also completed the race.
The Simon Fraser University men saw their perfect soccer season dashed following a 4-0 defeat to Seattle Pacific University at Terry Fox Field last Thursday. The loss snapped the varsity Clan’s winning streak at 16 games, but was not enough to prevent SFU from winning its first NCAA Division II conference title. SFU did just that on Saturday, blanking St. Martin’s University 2-0 at home to finish the season with a 17-1-0 record and a first-ever Great Northwest Athletic Conference title. It was the first time a Canadian school has won a conference championship in the NCAA. “It is fantastic to be part of a group today that created a little bit of history,” said SFU head coach Alan Koch in a prepared release. “I am very proud of our team. It means a lot to be the first Canadian team to win an NCAA conference championship. We now look forward to what we hope will be a long and exciting postseason.” That chance will come this week when the Clan travel to Phoenix, Arizona for the NAIA Association of Independent Institutions championship. The winning team at the regional tournament will earn an automatic berth into the NAIA national championships. In their final regular season match, SFU got its first goal and eventual gamewinning strike from Max Baessato on a header in the 59th minute. Baessato scored the goal off a free kick from teammate Sang Hwang. Freshman Carlo Basso sealed the win in the 73rd minute, finishing off a buildup from Helge Neumann and Hwang. Clan keeper Hide Ozawa picked up his 10th shutout of the season in the win. The national championships will be held at Orange Beach, Alabama from Nov. 29 to Dec. 4.

Knight signs with Boise State
STM face Hyacks at T-Bird in opening playoff Saturday Tom Berridge
sports editor
St. Thomas More Knights quarterback Mikey Carney put up player of the week numbers against Holy Cross again in the Pepsi Bowl at Empire Field last Friday. Carney passed for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns, while running for 200 more and another three scores to lead the Knights to a 41-20 victory over the Crusaders. Two of the touchdown tosses were to Kyle Madden, who gained 167 yards through the air while making 10 tackles, including a pair of sacks, from his linebacker position on defence. STM finished in third place with a 3-2 record in the AAA varsity Eastern Conference. The Knights will face their 10th Avenue rival New Westminster Hyacks in the playoff opener at Thunderbird Field at UBC this Saturday. Holy Cross set the pace in the first half, scoring off a fumble recovery in the Knights backfield in the
first quarter. STM came back to tie the contest twice. The first came on a bootleg from Carney from 18 yards out. The second on a 43-yard pass to Madden in the second quarter to knot the contest 13-13 at halftime. The Knights went ahead on a 26-yard scamper by Carney to start the third. But Holy Cross drew even following a successful drive. But that was it for the Crusaders. With 3:38 left in the quarter, Carney rambled for a 58-yard score up the left sideline. He then started out the fourth with a fine 15-yard TD pass to conference wide receiver Ross Hilliam to make the score 33-20. Carney and Madden teamed up for the final score on a 50-yard passand-run play to end the scoring. Both Carney and Madden were named this week to the Eastern Conference all-star team. Carney was nominated as a defensive back, while Madden was the confer-
ence defensive player of the year. James McKenzie had a monster game on defence, racking up 16 individual tackles. Saturday’s matchup at T-Bird Stadium will be just the second game between STM and New West at the senior varsity level. The first playoff encounter ended in a 56-25 win for the Hyacks in 2008. But that was then, said Hyack head coach Farhan Lalji. “(STM) is a good team. They might be the most improved team in the province, said Lalji. “(STM) never underachieves. If you want to beat them, you have to beat them. They don’t make mistakes.” STM head coach Bernie Kully said the Knights will definitely add a few wrinkles to its playbook to beat New West’s complicated Wing-T. Carlson Lacson was also named an all-star on the allconference offensive line. The first-round playoff game between STM and New West is scheduled for 8 p.m.

End-to-end: Giovanni Trasolini scored a
touchdown on this kickoff return last week in St. Thomas More’s 50-22 JV win over Centennial.
Game-winner for Rebel Ryan Nugent-Hopkins led the Red Deer Rebels to a 5-3 win over the Tri-City Americans in Western Hockey League play Saturday. Nugent-Hopkins, a projected top-five NHL draft pick, scored two goals and assisted on a third to garner the game’s first star. His second goal of the game proved the game-winner.
Canada under-17 national team player Lexie Der will be playing her post-secondary basketball at Boise State University next season. The St. Thomas More senior inked her letter of intent for a full-ride athletic scholarship to the Idaho State school Monday in front of her high school teammates. “I was looking for a school that would give me an opportunity to play on the national team,” said Der, who made her decision following a visit to the Boise State campus over the Thanksgiving weekend. “I wanted to get it out of the way and focus on my high school season and on my schoolwork, and not stress over it,” Der added. A Boise State assistant coach saw the 6-1 Burnaby forward last summer at the World cadette women’s championships in France, where Canada placed 11th.

Caution: Bad winter ahead!
Prepare today with a BCAA Membership! A dead battery or locking your keys in the car can become potentially dangerous when the weather turns nasty. And with all the talk of a harsh winter on the way, it’s time to think about a BCAA Membership to protect the ones you love. With BCAA’s legendary Road Assist service, you can be certain that help is never far away.
We are in for a cold and stormy winter.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac and local weather forecasters predict that we will be experiencing one of the coldest winters on record, with the heaviest snowfalls in mid- and late December and late February.
Will your car be ready?
One of the best ways to be prepared for the severe weather on its way is to be proactive.
One line of attack is a BCAA Membership.
According to Colin MacPhail, Director, Membership Marketing and Product Management at BCAA, many people wait until the first snowfall to call and by then BCAA is already very busy responding to their existing members. “When it cools down, our call centre gets flooded with phone calls, so we are telling people not to wait until their lock freezes or their car won’t start to call us,” says MacPhail. Meanwhile, winter driving can be rough on your car, which is why it is important to properly winterize your car to avoid costly car repair problems later. Fall is the best time to get your car ready for old man winter.
Here are a few things you can do right now:
Check to ensure you have the proper winter antifreeze and keep it topped up at all times; check tires for tread wear (snow tires are optimum); and have an emergency kit in your car at all times - it should include a shovel, sand for weight and traction, tire chains, a blanket, water, food, candles, a flashlight, a reflector and flares. “Should you get stuck on the side of the road for a few hours, someone should know of your trip plans and when you are to be where,” says MacPhail, adding to always have your cell phone fully charged when going on a long trip.
A membership offers great peace of mind and wonderful benefits.
On top of reliable roadside assistance, members also have access to thousands of Show Your Card and Save partner locations across North America where you can save on travel, hotels, car rentals and much more!
The price for peace of mind?
For details call 310-2345, click on www.bcaa.com or visit your nearest BCAA office.
Less than $100 for an individual membership and even less to add an additional member.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
