The B.C. College of Teachers has barred a woman convicted of sexual exploitation involving a St. Thomas More Collegiate student. “She’ll never teach again,” said Mykle Ludvigsen, spokesperson for the B.C. College of Teachers. The St. Thomas More teacher, who cannot be named due to a publication ban, pled guilty to one count of sexual exploitation and was sentenced in August 2009 to six months in jail and two years’ probation. Sexual exploitation is an offence, committed by a person in a position of trust or authority, that involves sexually touching a 14 to 18 year old. The teacher was originally charged with four counts of sexual exploitation, one count of sexual assault and one count of obstruction of justice. The college is an independent, self-regulating body that licenses Teacher Page 8

Burnaby’s city council is taking its fight for concessions on the Evergreen Line project to the negotiation table. Council has requested that the project

office specify what commitments it will make regarding the line to Burnaby, and plans to use the response to determine whether or not to negotiate a municipal agreement with the provincial government related to the rapid transit project. The plan to make the request was part of a city staff report on the project, presented to council Monday night. Of particular concern is the possibility that Cameron station cannot be added to

the line at a later date. Council, including Mayor Derek Corrigan, says it must be included in the project now. The project includes fewer stations than originally proposed, and Burnaby council is pressing to have the optional Cameron station included, since there are physical requirements that would make it impossible to add it to the system at a later stage. The six primary stations are Lougheed Town Centre, Burquitlam Plaza, the Port

Moody West Coast Express station, the Coquitlam West Coast Express station and a station at Coquitlam City Hall, with access to Douglas College. There were four additional spots being considered for two optional stations; Cameron in Burnaby, Queens in Port Moody and Falcon and Lincoln in Coquitlam. Evergreen Page 10

Halloween is shaping up to be a spooktacular occasion for folks of all ages in Burnaby. In addition to the many Burnaby homes that are decorated in honour of Halloween, a variety of activities are taking place this weekend. Here’s a few you may want to check out.

Fireworks at Gilmore

The Heights is once again inviting Burnaby residents to join in on some Halloween fun. The Halloween festivities get started with a bang on Friday, Oct. 29 when fireworks take to the skies at Gilmore Community School at 8:15 p.m.

Follow the pumpkins

On Saturday, kids are invited to trick or treat from 3 to 5 p.m., at Heights merchants who have pumpkin decals displayed in their windows. The Burnaby Central Railway in Confederation Park features special 6

A haunted village

In the mood for some Halloween hysteria? If so, Burnaby Village Museum is the place to be. The entire village will be transformed into a haunted village, whose inhabitants include witches, trolls and gravediggers. Visitors are encouraged to wear their favourite costume and visit a fortuneteller, take in the belated fashions of the dead departed Victorians, experience a circus sideshow, and listen to the moans of the dearly departed in the cemetery. “We cater to families,” said marketing coordinator Nancy Stagg. “We are not looking to freak people out, we are looking to gross them out.” Kids can trick or treat at six different locations, check out a display of the latest styles of coffins and enjoy unlimited rides on the carousel. The event, which runs Oct.

28 to 30, is $14 for adults and $9 for children aged two to 12 years of age (including unlimited carousel rides for all ages). Don’t forget to dress warmly.

A paranormal experience

Want to see a ghost? Well, you may not see an actual ghost, but you’ll hear about some of the mysterious happenings that have been reported at five building in the Deer Lake area, including Ceperley Mansion. The Haunted Deer Lake Walking Tours, which includes a walk through Burnaby Village Museum, are taking place daily until Oct. 31 from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. “What makes this different from the Vancouver Trolley Tours is we are not looking to give you nightmares,” said marketing coordinator Nancy Stagg. “You actually walk through buildings that have reported paranormal activity.” The tour starts at Burnaby Village Museum, which has three buildings where “unusual activity” such as unexplained noises and doors closing have been reported. Nearby buildings, including Anderson House, Mather House and Ceperley House, are included on the tour. Ceperley House has been deemed to be one of the top places in Canada for paranormal activity, and tour

goers will get to check out areas that aren’t usually open to the public. “We are not looking to create stories, we retell,” Stagg said. “We give a bit of the history of the buildings. I call it a history and mystery tour. Not all chills come from the cool weather.” Just to keep tour goers on their toes, a “few theatrical things” have been thrown in for fun. Tickets are $23.52 and are available by phoning City of Burnaby recreation centres or Burnaby Village Museum. Participants are advised to dress warmly.

Brentwood Town Centre and Lougheed Town Centre are getting into the Halloween spirit with a variety of events. The Brentwood Boo-levard train is back, offering kids a ride at Centre Court. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ‘Sanctuary’ does not exist

Students deserve better Dear Editor:

I really hate to scotch Mr. O’Neill’s contentions on “the law is the law,” but there is no “sanctuary,” Christian or otherwise, in Canadian law that allows scofflaws to hide within the confines of the Church. Mr. Harper, being, as I’ve heard, a good Christian, is perhaps showing too much leniency here. There was, in medieval times, some laws supporting such, but there was never a guarantee. It is generally believed that John (Red) Comyn was stabbed to death by Robert the Bruce in 1306 during a meeting at the high altar of Dumfries Abbey in Scotland. And who hasn’t heard of the murder of Thomas Becket at the altar of Canterbury Cathedral by King Henry II’s men after hearing him mutter, “Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest?” Hundreds of Hutus (or was it Tutsis?) died when the church they sought sanctuary in was burnt to the ground with them still within, a few years ago in Rwanda/ Burundi. That said, I defy Mr. O’Neill to put forward any instance of KGB honouring sanctuary at any of the thousands of churches that once covered the steppes, tundras and farmlands of Mother Russia or any of her Soviet satellite republics.

If I told you the price of a nearly universally prized object had doubled in price over a decade without any reduction in the supply of this good, would you be willing to purchase it for yourself? It happens every single year. The topic is tuition, and in the past decade, tuition fees have doubled to an average of more than $5,000 for a year of undergraduate studies. Furthering a young person’s education has become a greater financial burden for families than ever, and the pool of prospective students is beginning to shrink, as more students become unable to shoulder the financial burden. What’s worse is that our provincial government has cut spending on financial aid for students. Now students who are incredibly well qualified are being barred from an education, simply because of their current financial status. We’ve heard about British Columbia being the best place on earth, so why is it that we cannot afford to make sure that every student with the grades to succeed has a chance to further their education? The B.C. Liberals should bring back the student financial aid funding they’ve taken away from the budget, and stop mortgaging our generation’s future.

natural resource operations and – wait for it – a minister of state for “building code renewal.” But the rest of the cabinet changes were relatively minor in major, and only one new face– Stephanie Cadieux from Surrey – was promoted from the backbench. There were no real demotions – no one was actually taken out of cabinet – which may speak to Campbell having to be very careful about hurting anyone’s feelings in his party right now, given the party convention coming up in November. Campbell says he regards his current team as strong, with little need for new blood. He remains stubbornly optimistic he can pull both himself and his government out of the mess they find themselves, and

that he can do that with little change in the people around him. There was one important exception to that, however. After spending 13 years as Premier Gordon Campbell’s chief advisor, Martyn Brown has left the premier’s office to become a deputy minister. Replacing him is former deputy finance minister and ICBC president Paul Taylor. The importance of Brown’s departure cannot be downplayed. Few people last long as a chief of staff to a political leader, and Brown’s survival in that post for so long speaks volumes about how much Campbell relied on him. Chief of staff can be an immensely powerful position, second perhaps only to the premier himself. Brown has been the

unseen force in the B.C. Liberal government since it first took power in 2001. Like his predecessors, he seemed likely to last only a few years, but after a while it became apparent he was so intrinsically linked to Campbell that he wasn’t going anywhere. But now he has left (he’s now deputy minister of tourism, trade and investment), and it will be interesting to see what impact his departure has on Campbell’s strategic and philosophic approach to governing. I suspect Taylor’s priority will be to help devise a strategy to sell the HST to the public. He surely can’t be viewing his appointment as long-term employment, given the government’s low standing in the polls. Keith Baldrey is chief political correspondent for Global B.C.

Ludvigsen said the teacher’s licence expired and the college barred her from ever renewing it. “The important message here is she’s ineligible to teach in B.C.,” he said. Not only that, the information goes across Canada and the U.S., so she’ll never be able to teach in North

America again, he added. The teacher is not allowed to be around boys aged 14 to 18, unless it’s part of her job and her employer knows about her conviction. She’s also not allowed to work in a position of authority or supervision with young males or participate in any volunteer activities with them. She was also ordered to undergo counselling.

“There’s something there”: Robert Belyk, the author of four books of ghost stories, regards himself as a “reluctant believer” in ghosts after years of research into paranormal happenings. He’s giving a presentation about ghost stories of Greater Vancouver this Friday.

“There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy.” Those words, of course, are William Shakespeare’s, spoken by Hamlet to the friend who can’t quite believe that the Prince of Denmark is speaking to his father’s ghost. The sentiment that lies behind them might just as well belong to Robert Belyk. When it comes to the existence of ghosts, Belyk has been both Horatio and Hamlet. “I regard myself as a sort of reluctant believer,” he confesses. Belyk is an author, with four collections of ghost stories to his credit. He’ll be making a presentation called Ghosts in the Hood: True Accounts of Spooks, Spectres and Phantoms from Greater Vancouver this Friday in Port Moody. Over years of research, he says, his inborn skepticism has come up time and again against evidence of happenings where he’s

had to say, “’This doesn’t gel with anything in my knowledge base.’” He pauses, then says firmly, “There’s something there.” What that “something” is has been the subject of many years of study for Belyk. Belyk was originally drawn towards the field of ghost research in university. “I majored in political economics, which is about as far from ghosts as you can get,” he says with a laugh. His original interest wasn’t specifically in ghosts but rather in folklore and in a compulsion to collect British Columbia’s stories in book form. What he found when he started to look around was that, at that time, no one had collected B.C.’s ghost stories. Belyk made it his mission to be the one who would. Originally, he says, his publisher didn’t have much appetite for ghost stories and was reluctant to publish a book of them. But when Belyk’s first book came out in 1990, he says, “It was a runaway Canadian bestseller.” Back in those days, he found it hard to get people to talk to him about their ghost stories. “When I first started, people were reluctant to give me anything,” he says. “It was

What’s going on during those teen years BY JESSICA KERR

Everyone has been through it, is going through it or will go through it one day. However, those adolescent years bring with them a host of challenges for both teens and parents that can sometimes leave everyone feeling a little baffled. “Teenagers are posed with the challenge of finding a balance between staying close to their family, particularly their parents, and then forging their own identity, and so depending on the health of that family that can be easier or more difficult to do,” says Vancouver psychotherapist Katherine Young, who runs Head and Heart Counselling. “So, if they are successful in forging their own identity but they have to sort of really separate themselves too much from their parents, then they’re left really vulnerable without that guidance. On the other hand, if they don’t separate themselves enough they’re left in sort of an infantile state where they don’t figure who they want to be.” It’s a delicate balance that’s made even more complicated by modern society. The overall health and strength of the family unit and upbringing during a child’s early years can have an “absolutely massive effect” on how young people make their way through the adolescent years, Young says. “One of the biggest questions I think that comes up for teenagers and mental health is the structure in the family, whether there’s enough structure or too much.” A child that does not have enough structure will have difficulties developing the inner controls

that everyone needs to prevent things like substance over use or computer over use, which, Young says, is a problem she is seeing more and more frequently. “Just learning the basics of life takes some discipline and structure to do; nutrition, getting a little exercise, all those basics.” Too much structure can also hinder the transition from child to adulthood. “With too much of that, it’s kind of the same thing,” Young says. “The child doesn’t develop that internally. So, they can either go into a rebellion against the parents where they’re still not really discovering who they are they’re just

reacting against what they perceive as excessive control or they just stay in kind of a child-like state and not learn to take risks in the world and face their fears.” It’s a delicate balance and Young sees many families that are having a hard time walking that tightrope. It’s all about emotional needs and it’s the parent’s job to try and read that in their children, she says. That’s what forms the relationship and the connection between parents and child. “You can have all the discipline in the world and if ... there’s not a relationship to base that on, the kid’s not going to care.” Teens are stereotypically thought of as moody and driven by hormones. However, Young says it all has to be taken into context. “I always want teenagers to feel like their feelings, their behaviours have meaning and they make sense,” she says. Registered psychologist Dr. John Wagner says there are signs parents should keep an eye out for: social withdrawal; problems with basic functions, such as eating, sleeping and making it to school; and mis-use of substances. “Experimentation is normal in adolescence,” Wagner says. “It’s normal to expect kids to do a little experimentation.” However, for some experimentation can turn into mis-use and abuse. While there are individuals at every age that can be affected by serious mental illnesses, the general teen population is most susceptible to anxiety, depression and substance abuse. Wagner says he also sees a number of younger patients who practice self-harm or are exhibiting suicidal tendencies. “If a child is exceptionally irritable, that can be a sign of anxiety and depression,” Young says. “If they withdraw from a more full life that they were living, from friends and from activities; if you see a change; if they were pretty good at doing their homework and then they stop; excessive crying.” Continued on Page 22

Parents should also keep an eye on kids that are involved in several clubs and after school activities and always strive for perfect marks to ensure they’re not pushing themselves too far and not enjoying their activities anymore. The adolescent years are also when control over things extracurricular activities and food intake shifts from the parent to the child. “For the ﬁrst time they’re thinking, ‘Well, maybe I shouldn’t drink that Coke, it sure has a lot of sugar in it,’” Young says. “So they’re developing that inner control and some kids go very extreme with that, and that’s where you see anorexia or bulimia, that kind of thing. But they can be a little

bit too much just black and white; it can be hard for them to hold a balance because it’s just so brand new to them.” It may sound a little cliché, but both Wagner and Young stress the importance of communication, no matter what. “One of the primary things is just talking with kids,” Wagner says, adding parents should be up front with teens, ask open-ended questions and take the time to listen. “I think it’s really important to let your child talk to you about what they’re going through even if it puts you in an awkward position,” says Young. “I would advise parents to try and walk that line and try to manage that grey area where your child can still come to you and talk to you, but that you still have some behaviour limits around alcohol and substance abuse and sex and all that stuff.”

As we get older, back pain can become a “pain in the neck” Neck pain is pain that occurs anywhere from the bottom of your head to the top of your shoulders. It may spread to the upper back or arms and may cause limited neck and head movement. Neck pain is a common problem, especially in older adults. You may feel a “kink,” stiffness, or severe pain in your neck.

The pain may spread to your shoulders, upper back, or arms, or it may cause a headache. You may not be able to move or turn your head and neck normally. If there is pressure on a spinal nerve root, you may have pain that shoots down the arm or numbness, tingling, or weakness in your arm. If your neck pain is long-

lasting (chronic), it may be difficult to cope with daily life. Common side effects of chronic pain include fatigue, depression, and anxiety. If your pain starts after an injury, such as a car accident, severe fall or blow to the head, or if your pain does not improve after a few weeks, your health professional may want to do

an X-ray, magnetic resonance image (MRI), computed tomography (CT) scan, or other imaging tests to check the neck bones, spinal discs, spinal nerve roots, and the spinal cord. Most neck pain is caused by activities that result in repeated or prolonged movements of the neck’s muscles, ligaments, tendons, bones, or joints. This can result in a strain (an overstretched or overused muscle), sprain (injury to a ligament), spasm of the neck muscles, or inflammation of the neck joints. For example, painting a ceiling, sleeping with your neck twisted, slouching, or staying in one

position for a long period of time can all cause neck pain. Less frequently, neck pain is caused by injury, such as whiplash that occurs in a motor vehicle accident or a fall from a ladder, or by another medical condition, such as infection in the neck area, a narrowing of the spinal canal in the neck (cervical spinal stenosis), or rheumatoid arthritis. Most neck pain caused by activities goes away within 4 to 6 weeks. Chronic neck pain is first treated the same way as acute neck pain. Dear Tom and Ray: I have a 1999 BMW 323i that I love. My husband wants to trade it in because it has 207,100 miles on it. He’s afraid of racking up big repair bills. I say if we keep up with maintenance and repairs, who knows how long we can go? And we should think of any repair bills as car payments. At least it’s paid off. So far, I’ve managed to “hide” the last three repairs from him. Now I’m hearing a clicking noise, and the steering wheel is shuddering when I drive. The longer I drive, the worse the shaking gets. It is similar to the feeling

of a tire going flat. In fact, last night I thought maybe it was that, and I pulled over to look. The tires are fine. Have any ideas? Is this going to be a pricey fix that I’m going to have trouble hiding from my spousal unit? – Arleen TOM: Well, let’s deal with your issues one at a time, Arleen. First, and most importantly, you have to take care of that front-end shaking immediately. Seriously, right now. RAY: It sounds like a ball joint is failing. When it breaks, the wheel’s going to fall off. And then there won’t be any more questions about whether to repair this car – it’ll be wrapped around a tree. The question will be about how to repair Arleen – if you’re lucky. TOM: So that’s Step 1. And it’s urgent. RAY: Then, while the car is in the shop, ask your mechanic to look it over

from stem to stern. Have him inspect it as if you were thinking of buying it from someone as a used car. Tell him you want to know everything that’s wrong with it. Ask him what he thinks needs to be fixed now, and what’ll need to be fixed in the next six months. TOM: If it gets a relatively clean bill of health, I think you can make a good case for keeping it. RAY: Here’s the case you make to your husband. He’s afraid of big repair bills. So let’s look at a badcase scenario. Let’s say the car costs you an average of $300 a month to repair from now on. That’s $3,600 a year. TOM: If you replace the car with the most barebones new 3 Series BMW (and you’re a good negotiator), that’ll run you about $31,000. MOTORING Take extra care when driving in wet weather ICBC and police are reminding drivers to slow down and adapt their driving speed to fall and winter road conditions. In the Lower Mainland, the number of casualty crashes due to driving too fast for conditions increases by over 40 per cent in December compared to October, ICBC notes in a press release. “Wet road conditions are the main factor of speed-relative crashes in the Lower Mainland,” said Jon Schubert, ICBC’s president and CEO, in the release. “Unfortunately, many drivers don’t adjust their speed and recognize that the posted speed limit is only for ideal or dry road conditions.” ICBC and the Justice Institute of B.C.’s driving instructors teamed recently in a special event at Richmond’s SilverCity to demonstrate how various driving speeds affect the time it takes to stop on wet roads. It was clear – the faster you go, the longer it will take you to stop. And in poor weather

conditions, it will take even longer. Police were also on hand to remind drivers of the consequences of speeding in B.C. “If you are caught driving too fast for the road conditions, you will be fined $167,” said Supt. Mike Diack of the RCMP. “As the weather changes and road conditions deteriorate, your chances of getting into a crash and being injured or killed dramatically increase.” Schubert noted that all drivers can help make the roads safer by making good decisions. “That means allowing more time for travelling in wet weather and slowing down so you can see more of the road,” he said. In addition to slowing down, ICBC is encouraging drivers to ensure their windshield wipers are in good working order and their tires are inflated at the correct pressure and appropriately rated for the weather conditions.

The St. Thomas More Knights earned an important two points and a whole lot of respect in the B.C. high school varsity football eastern conference last week. The Knights knocked off the reigning B.C. champion Centennial Centaurs 32-27 at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West to move into sole possession of third place in the conference. STM came back from an eight-point deficit at halftime, outscoring the Centaursthreetouchdowns to one in the second half, including Mikey Carney’s six-yard game-winning strike to Ross Hilliam in the end zone with just 31.6 seconds remaining in the game. The Knights gave every intention they would be no easy pushover for Centennial, scoring on an 11-play, 72-yard drive on the opening possession, when Carney scampered into the end zone from 11 yards out. “We have the ability to compete (in the conference),” said Hilliam, who finished with two catches for 24 yards and a key two-point conversion that tied the contest at 20-20 midway through the third quarter. STM kept Centennial off balance with a hurryup offence that at times had every player but the quarterback on the line of scrimmage. It’s part of the clever strategy and keen conditioning that the Knights have decided to employ to make up for their overall lack of size.

“We’ve been smaller every single game,” Hilliam said, but added the team must still be more disciplined to allow the system to get the job done. That was true in the first half. After the opening score, Carney and Alex Golding executed a successful short kickoff recovery. Three plays later, the Knights Justin Siglos took a pass to the Centaur’s one-yard line, but a 15yard major penalty negated that gain. The ensuing field goal was blocked. STM linebacker Carlson Lacson intercepted a pass on the next series, but on the following possession, Kyle Madden was stripped

of the ball at midfield after a nice 10-yard gain for STM. In the second quarter, another major penalty on the Knights called back a 30-yard pass and run by Hilliam on the following possession. Two plays later, Carney threw his only interception of the game. Centennial finally broke a big play, going deep to wide receiver Nathan Lund on a 32-yard pass from Bobby Pospischil. Siglos had a 45-yard kickoff return called back on a holding call, but STM managed to take the ball back 76 yards to regain the lead 12-7 on a 13-yard scramble by Siglos up the

middle. Siglos rushed for 111 yards and one touchdown. But Centennial countered quickly on a 46-yard run by Pospischil and a second TD pass to Lund just before halftime. But despite the setbacks, STM came out in the second half, continuing its stout defence while engineering three long, timesapping drives to pull out the win. “I would have to thank our coaches for that. They keep us in the game and to keep pushing,” Hilliam said. The first was a 15-play, 95-yard effort capped off by a five-yard Carney run. The second went 79

yards before Madden bulled his way over from one yard out to give the home Knights a six-point lead. On Centennial’s next possession, Aiden Golding and Madden sacked Pospischil for a sevenyard loss, but with a third down and 26 yards to go, the Centaur QB shook off a tackler and hit Brando Nguyen for a key first down that kept the drive alive. The Notre Dame Jugglers positioned themselves for a thirdplace finish in the B.C. high school western conference with a 28-14 win over the New Westminster Hyacks Friday. The Jugglers never trailed in the contest, scoring on their first two possessions while keeping the Hyacks’ wing-T offence to less than 200 yards. Notre Dame running back Shane Devlin carried the ball 25 times for 114 yards and one

touchdown, while quarterback Demitrius Wallace was good on five of seven passes for 62 yards and a TD and one interception. Backup pivot Serafino Gentile, in his first start for the Hyacks, completed just two passes while getting picked off twice by the Juggler defensive backs. Nicholas Schwagele returned one of those interceptions 50 yards for a Notre Dame touchdown in the first quarter. Notre Dame’s Ante Litre finished off a 15-play opening drive with a one-yard run for a score. The Jugglers led 14-0 at the end

of the first quarter. Manraj Bains carried the ball three times for 46 yards on New Westminster’s next possession, setting up Gentile for a TD on a quarterback sneak. Men win record 14th straight game Simon Fraser University men’s soccer team chalked up a record 14th consecutive win following a 4-3 victory over Western Washington University Saturday. The Clan gave up the opening goal in the third minute to the home team Vikings, but rallied for four first-half goals, including the eventual game-winner from Joseph Martin just before half time. With just seconds left in the opening half, Martin drove the length of the field and blasted a shot from 12 yards out to put SFU up by 4-2. Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words Travis Lulay - 14 I was born and raised in Salem, Oregon and live there during the off-season with my wife Kimberly along with my parents, siblings and extended family, who still call the area home. I’ve been around football since I was a young kid and I decided pretty early on that I wanted to train hard and get accepted into university so I could play at the college level and ultimately pursue a professional career. You could say that I’ve been successful in reaching my goals so far! I spent the 2002 to 2005 seasons at Montana State, where I set a school record for career passing yards, led my team in rushing yards during my senior season, and concluded my college career ranked fourth all-time in rushing yards and touchdowns – the highest total for any quarterback at Montana State. While I’ve spent much of the last several years with a number of different professional football teams, I’m happy to have had these opportunities to play the game I love. Whether it’s stints in Seattle with the Seahawks of the NFL, in New Orleans with the Saints or moving overseas to play with NFL Europa’s Berlin Thunder, I know these experiences have all contributed to making me the person and player I am today. With these experiences in mind, I remember what it’s like to be a young athlete with a dream of playing at the professional level which is a big reason why taking part in the Lions’ community initiatives is so important to me. Whether it’s acting as a guest coach at a local community football practice or helping run a Timbits Camp at our practice facility, it’s a rewarding feeling to know I could be inspiring a young person to pursue their goals in sports and in life.

Simon Fraser University missed perhaps its best opportunity for a win in Great Northwest conference football last Saturday. The Clan was 30 minutes away from their first NCAA Division II victory but failed to score in the second half of play in an 18-15 loss to Dixie State University in St. George, Utah. The loss overshadowed a season-high 504 yards of total offence for SFU, while the Clan defence held Dixie State to just 204 yards. It also spoilt another outstanding performance by Bo Palmer rushing the ball. Palmer racked up 194 yards on the ground, including an 80-yard touchdown run to end the first half that

put the Clan ahead 15-10 at halftime. But in the second half, the only score came from Dixie State on a 10-yard pass from quarterback Cody Stevenson to tight end Alex Nelson late in the third quarter. SFU drove to Dixie’s 19yard line on its final possession of the game, but Carlos Martinez’s field goal attempt was blocked with eight seconds left in the game. “We were moving the ball and doing the things we wanted to do, but the third quarter was just brutal, and we made a number of stupid mistakes that just beat us up,” said SFU head coach Dave Johnson in a school press release. The Clan opened the scoring in the first quarter on freshman quarterback

WILLIAM ROY BROWN

Born - Bulyea, Sask. Mar. 13, 1912 Died - Royal Columbian Hospital Oct. 12, 2010 Family and friends will gather at First Presbyterian Church, 355 7th Street in New Westminster, at 2:00 pm on October 30, 2010, to celebrate the life of Roy Brown who passed peacefully in the evening of Oct. 12, at the age of 98. Roy’s life was shared with his wife, Anna for 72 years - Anna will sorely miss him. During his life, he served his country in the Canadian Armed Forces in WWII. Wounded twice, he fought in France, North Africa, Italy and Greece. He then taught school in Hedley, Keremeos and Kelowna for 35 years, during which time he and Anna raised four children - Rodney, Lorne, Charlene and Patricia. His devotion to his seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren represented everything that Roy’s life encompassed – his faith and a strong sense of family. He will always be loved and remembered. Donations, if anyone wishes, may be made to the Salvation Army on Columbia Street in New Westminster.
