Garbage will burn, but where?
Directors also set targets for reducing garbage dumped in landfills – 70 per cent by 2015 Jennifer Moreau staff reporter
Metro Vancouver’s board of directors passed a waste management plan Friday, approving a new garbage incinerator, but where exactly it will be remains to be seen. The plan aims to reduce garbage, reuse and recycle as much as possible, burn the leftover waste and put the remains in a landfill. The plan includes targets to reduce the amount of waste created and dumped in landfills to 70 per cent by 2015 and 80 per cent by 2020. The plan also includes measures that will ban all wood and compostable waste from disposal, increase recycling This story first appeared on in multi-family www.burnabynow.com residences and onjob sites, and enhance existing recycling and reuse programs. Metro Vancouver has to wait for the provincial government to approve the plan before soliciting proposals to have the incinerator built. Burnaby’s garbage incinerator, which has been around for roughly 20 years, generates $10 million in annual energy sales from electricity and steam. Burnaby councillor Colleen Jordan was at the Metro Vancouver meeting Friday, which ran for more than six hours.

Risky habit: A man is seen in Confederation Park on Monday risking a $2,000 fine by violating a temporary ban on smoking within all city parks, trails and green spaces.
Puffing in city parks? Don’t try it Andrew Fleming staff reporter
Smokers who like to light up while at the park will have to quit the habit for a while. Citing the current extreme fire hazard, the City of Burnaby has announced a ban on smoking for all municipal parks, trails and green spaces until further notice. “We don’t often have to do this in the Lower Mainland, but everybody is on pretty high alert,” said parks director David Ellenwood, adding the city is following the advice of the B.C. Wildfire Management Branch. “No Smoking – Fire Hazard” signs have been posted throughout the city’s
parks and park patrols will also be out to remind people to butt out. “We’re not going to be packing squirt guns, and water bombers are not going to be flying over the parks,” said Ellenwood with a laugh. “We’re going to be relying on people’s common sense.” Although enforcing the ban is difficult considering the sheer amount of green space within city boundaries, people who choose to violate it can risk a fine under a city bylaw that prohibits open fires. Ellenwood said handing out fines is unlikely but is still possible. “We would ask someone to put it out, and if they don’t comply, we can fine them. It’s as simple as that.”
According to a city parks regulation bylaw, anyone who drops “any lighted match, cigar, cigarette or similar thing or any burning substance” risks a fine of up to $2,000. The ban does not currently apply to cooking stoves that use gas, propane or briquettes, or to portable campfire apparatus with a CSA or ULC rating that aren’t capable of producing a flame longer than 15 centimetres. Ellenwood said he wouldn’t be able to guess how long the ban will last, saying that it depends on the weather and decisions made by the Coastal Fire Centre, one of six regional wildland fire centres operated by the B.C. Forest Service’s Wildfire Management Branch.

Garbage: Councillor Jordan defends incinerators continued from page 1
Jordan said some representatives wanted the incinerator out of Metro Vancouver, while others, like those from Burnaby, thought it should be in the region, so the resulting vote was somewhat of a compromise. Burnaby’s position is that the garbage should be dealt with here and to keep the incinerator within Metro Vancouver, she added. The next step is for Environment Minister Barry Penner to review the plan. Jordan said Penner may oppose an incinerator in the region because he comes from the Fraser Valley, where people have been opposed to
burning waste, concerned that resulting air pollution will affect the valley. Jordan said science supports the incineration option. “It’s science versus people who are just afraid of everything,” she said. “This is the least harmful of a bunch of bad alternatives.” Even after reducing and recycling garbage, there will still be 500,000 tonnes of annual waste that has to go somewhere, Jordan said. “The only thing that’s ironic about all of this is Burnaby’s had an incinerator going for 20 years, and most of the population of our city doesn’t even know it’s there,” she said. Ben West of the Wilderness Committee has
been a vocal opponent of incineration, saying burning waste is a “carbon intensive” process that can create a “toxic soup effect.” “There’s toxins in our garbage, and when you burn this stuff, you create a whole new slew of toxins,” West said. That gets buried in a landfill as ash and can leach into the groundwater or the atmosphere, he added. “There’s nothing about incineration that shuts down landfills. You’re dumping all the highly toxic ash instead of garbage,” he said, adding for every four barrels of garbage, you get one barrel of toxic ash. West would like to see more waste reduction and recycling instead of incinerating.

CRIME IN BRIEF
Police looking for more info Two weeks after a 31year-old man was murdered outside his father’s Burnaby home, homicide investigators are re-canvassing neighbours in the hopes of identifying a suspect. Letters arrived in mailboxes on the morning of July 29 asking residents in the 4200-block Boundary Road to recall the morning Harchie Tupas Onas was murdered. “If you, your family members or anyone else you know witnessed anyone walking or running in the lanes or streets in your neighbourhood or saw any vehicles parked or running in front of your house that you did not recognize, we want you to call us,” the letter reads. Onas was found by his father in the early morning hours of July 12 after gunmen opened fire on him. He was taken to hospital where he later died. Homicide investigators say Onas was known to police. Court records show Onas – who also went by Sam Onas – was charged in September 2000 with possession of a controlled substance and two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. Anyone with information about the murder is asked to call the IHIT tip line at 1-877551-4447 or, to remain anonymous, call Crimestoppers at
Fake bills found 1-800-222-8477. An 18-year-old man is facing charges of possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking and possession of counterfeit money after being arrested on July 21 at the Royal Oak SkyTrain station. The incident began in New Westminster when police received a report of a man fleeing from a fight at the Columbia Street SkyTrain station. He was soon recognized by Transit Police at the Royal Oak station, who confronted the man. During the subsequent search of the man, police discovered $11,900 of freshly printed counterfeit $100 dollar bills. In addition, 12 small bags of drugs believed to be heroin were also seized by the police.

Many versus Kenney: More than a hundred protesters marched from Central Park last week to protest a new bill proposed by Immigration Minister Jason Kenney.
Resident protests illegal protest A city man says it was wrong for the RCMP to have allowed an illegal protest to proceed Andrew Fleming staff reporter
A Burnaby man is upset that the activist group No One Is Illegal got away with holding an illegal protest in Central Park last week. David Friedman said the RCMP are guilty of “dereliction of duty” for allowing the July 24 afternoon protest against Conservative Immigration Minister Jason Kenney by choosing to ignore a city bylaw. Burnaby Parks Regulation Bylaw No. 7331, on the books since 1979, states: “No person shall, without first obtaining the written permission of the administrator, hold or take part in any procession, march, drill, play, ceremony, concert, gathering, meeting or similar thing in or on any park.” More than a hundred people gathered at Central Park near Patterson SkyTrain station before marching on the streets to demonstrate against Kenney, who is attempting to toughen up federal immigration laws. Similar protests were also held the same day in Halifax, Montreal, Toronto and Winnipeg. According to David Ellenwood, director

In short, she was driving close to the legal line. But last week, a judge ruled Berner’s judgment was impaired that day and the unusual speed and recklessness with which she drove were clearly related to the wine she’d been drinking. It’s a judgment worth considering, especially in light of B.C.’s new drunkdriving laws which come into effect this fall, including much-tougher penalties
for lower blood-alcohol levels. Mothers Against Drunk Driving has long argued for tougher penalties at the levels serious fines and driving bans will now kick in, because research has shown it’s a level where driver reactions start to be significantly impacted. The message is: If you’ve been drinking, you don’t have to be falling-down drunk to be unfit to drive a car – or for there to be devastating consequences.

Burnaby Board of Trade’s
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Political saints, heroes here continued from page 6
Party movement in the U.S. a “shrieking horde of right-wing lunatics” is Mr. Claxton’s opinion only and may not be anything approximating that definition. Mr. Claxton claims in his insinuations that global warming is not a myth, and he and others have continued to pretend it is fact, but the only fact is that they have failed to prove it to be so. The weight of the evidence against that conjecture led to the failure of the Copenhagen Accord. What a horrific waste of time and money that became. In his favour, Mr. Claxton believes that Canadians are not likely to believe in messianic political ideals and notes the very humanity of our first prime minister, but he fails to invoke the memory of Pierre Trudeau and his cherished dream of a society that considers abortion, national daycare, multicultural mumbo-jumbo de rigueur. It is my considered opinion that there are saints and heroes and, yes, a sacred destiny in our future. Larry Bennett, Burnaby
More study on incinerator
Dear Editor:
I am pleased that cooler heads have prevailed and that Metro Vancouver has decided to rethink its solid waste management options. Thankfully the board avoided being railroaded by staff into immediately authorizing construction of a 500,000-tonne per year
incinerator in the Lower Mainland. There appear to be three options: One, continue to land fill our garbage at the Cache Creek site or elsewhere; two, construct an incinerator somewhere in Metro Vancouver; three, construct an incinerator somewhere else. I believe Gold River on Vancouver Island has been suggested. All of these options have drawbacks, and I don’t think anyone, including the Metro Vancouver board members, has enough information to make a proper decision. I think the big gap is that no one knows what the health effects of the pollutants emitted from an incinerator might be. It is pointed out correctly that an incinerator has operated for 20 years in South Burnaby with no apparent ill effects, and we are reassured by Metro Vancouver staff that there is nothing to worry about, but I’m not so sure. In my opinion, what is required is a comprehensive independent unbiased review of all of the options including a review of all of the available scientific information respecting each option with a recommendation to the Metro Vancouver board as to which option is the safest and least likely to affect human health and the environment. Metro Vancouver should appoint an independent commission with an adequate budget to conduct a proper review of the options. Its mandate should also require it to make a recommendation as to which of the obviously unattractive options to proceed with. As issues relating to human health and environmental protection are involved, the decision should not be made based on economic factors and cost considerations.

Oil: An embedded hypocritical streak continued from page 6
navigating through the Second Narrows in Burrard Inlet, which is just 121-metres wide and not very deep. The BP oil spill understandably has everyone concerned about oil drilling and has revived awful memories of the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska. Many people have called for a ban on tanker traffic, period. But those who want to kill all the pipelines and beach all the oil tankers are ignoring an essential part of the picture – we depend on oil for our state of living. To think otherwise is to ignore reality. That’s not to say we shouldn’t try to wean ourselves off of oil depend-
ence, but that will take many, many years and require a huge shift in our social behavior. There is a hypocritical streak embedded in many of the moral arguments against oil usage. (For example, how many people who attend anti-oil protests take diesel-burning transit or gas-fuelled cars to get there?) The Alberta oil sands are an enormous financial investment for the companies involved up there. They are not going to walk away because a pipeline doesn’t get built to Kitimat. Rather, the dirty oil will find a way out of the province – and that still means cutting through B.C. – either through the existing pipeline or, more likely, via tanker rail
cars – and likely into the Burnaby refinery. And that will mean more tankers cruising past Vancouver, the supposedly green capital of Canada. Kitimat’s loss is not necessarily Vancouver’s gain. Oil spills do happen. Let’s just hope and pray one doesn’t occur if a tanker runs aground or collides with something in Burrard Inlet or out in the waters surrounding the Gulf Islands. If it does, we’ll have a tough time continuing to brag about being the “best place on Earth.” Oil-soaked beaches along Stanley Park aren’t exactly the kind of image that goes with that claim. Keith Baldrey is the chief political reporter for Global B.C.

Contributions to HST campaign on list are ‘misleading,’ says organizer Jennifer Moreau staff reporter
A few notable Burnaby organizations popped up on the list of financial contributors to the Fight HST campaign, but the report is misleading, says lead organizer Chris Delaney. As per provincial law, Bill Vander Zalm filed a financial report with Elections B.C. for the initiative petition campaign that aims to strike down the harmonized sales tax. The report lists close to $118,000
in contributions from various groups, including two local recreation centres and Crystal Mall in Metrotown. Cameron and Bonsor recreation centres were listed as contributing $2,180.30 combined, and Crystal Mall was listed as contributing $1,312.50. “That report was misleading, because the vast majority were inkind donations,” Delaney said, adding the city let the Fight HST campaign use space at the rec centres, and since everything had to have a monetary value attached, it was listed in the report.
Buy 1 pair & get second pair at 50% off*
The Canadian Union of Public Employees donated $2,100. The money was earmarked for courier costs and ads, Delaney said. The Burnaby-based Canadian Office of Professional Employees Union also donated $2,500 in cash. Elections B.C. is reviewing the petition’s signatures and is expected to wrap up by Aug. 11. Delaney said it looks like the petition will go forward. For more on this issue, see Jennifer Moreau’sblog,CommunityConversations, www.burnabynow.com.

Running on Aug. 5, 19 and 26, the family-oriented nights are free to all participants; all you have to do is bring your own blanket and enjoy. On Aug. 5, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, rated G, is an animated film that tells the story of an eccentric wannabe scientist, and his attempt
to solve the world hunger crisis. The movie is based on the No. 1 best-selling book by Judi and Ron Barrett. On Aug. 19, KJ: Music & Life, a Cantonese film with English and Chinese subtitles, is an award-winning documentary about a 17-yearold music prodigy from Hong Kong, who is struggling with the demands of his own talent and questioning the meaning of life. This PG-rated film received rave reviews at the New Asia Film Festival.
On Aug. 26, Up, an animated comedy adventure, is about a 78-year old balloon salesman, who fulfills his lifelong dream of a great adventure when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America. Youths may have set brush fire Alfie Lau
staff reporter
A townhouse complex had to be evacuated on the afternoon of July 29 after a one-hectare brush fire near the foot of Burnaby Mountain broke out just after 4:30 p.m. According to Burnaby Fire Department assistant fire chief Darrell Smith, 15 fire trucks and two helicopters fought the stubborn blaze for six hours. “This was a very tough fire to fight,” said Smith. “We were in extremely high forest area and, not only did we use our day shift crews, the night shift crews stayed late to help fight the fire. … We cleared out by 10:20 p.m.” A total of 52 firefighters fought the fire, with 10 fire engines, two lad-

Stuicide was directed by Kiran Sangherra, a Burnaby resident, and will be playing this week. The press release for the festival offers a brief description of the film. “Stu is the worst at everything, especially when it comes to killing himself. But his friend Colebuck offers him some new ideas.” To see Stuicide and the other films in the festival, go to www.nsi-canada.ca/ film_festival.aspx. – Janaya Fuller-Evans
The art of dressing The National Nikkei Museum and Heritage Centre is hosting the Beauty of Japan – Japanese Kimono Show today (Aug. 4). A group of kimono teachers and students, led by Mineko Ukai from Nishinomiya, Japan, present the show. Thirty kimono teachers and models will come together on stage for the finale. A reception with refreshments is to follow. Kimono and items created from kimono fabric will be on sale in the lobby. The show starts at 7 p.m., at the museum at 6688 Southoaks Cres. Tickets are $12, and $10 for concession and museum members. For more information, call 604777-7000 or go to www. nikkeiplace.org. – Janaya Fuller-Evans
der trucks, two rescue trucks and the command unit on site. Smith said the fire appears to have started in a vacant lot just behind the Mammoth film studios. The major concern was to keep the fire from spreading to a townhouse complex that was nearby, in the 8400-block of Forest Grove Drive. “The RCMP was on site evacuating the complex, and we were worried because many of those townhouses have cedar roofs and cedar siding,” said Smith, who added that three B.C. ambulances also assisted in the evacuation. “We set up a firebreak right away using the B.C. Hydro right-of-way road that was there.” Smith couldn’t comment on initial media reports that the fire may have been started by a group of youths
playing with matches. “The fire is currently under investigation,” he said. “Our investigators are still on scene today (July 30) looking into the cause of the fire. “What I can say is that the fire started near the bottom, and it was so hot and so dry that it just took off,” he said. “We had our hands full fighting that fire.” Smith also wouldn’t comment on a media report that said the RCMP would have a stern talk with kids who were spotted playing with matches before the blaze erupted. According to Global Television, the RCMP will not lay charges, but they do want to speak to the youngsters, who are believed to be under 12 years old, and their parents. Forest fire danger in Burnaby is high at this time of year, Smith said.

Barbecue on for young immigrants
P
urpose Society is holding an August barbecue to promote a program that helps young immigrants who have dropped out of school or are struggling in the mainstream educational system. The Newcomer Youth Connection Program helps young immigrants upgrade their skills and get back in school. The program classes are small and interactive, and the youth get support to help them overcome problems related to language, the education system, finances, health, and social and cultural complexities of living in Canada. The barbecue is Aug. 13, from noon to 4 p.m. in New Westminster’s Moody Park. It’s open to any person between the ages of 15 to 24, who has migrated to Canada in the past five years and is now living in Burnaby or New Westminster. For more information, see www.purpose society.org.
Conservative update
The Burnaby-Douglas Conservative Association held a fundraiser lunch in mid-June with federal Immigration Minister Jason Kenney in attendance. The lunch was held at the Vancouver Club. The association’s Marko Dekovic said the group is also hoping to invite Conservative caucus members of Italian descent to participate in the next Giro di Burnaby. The Burnaby Heights bike race will be on again in 2011 after a hiatus following funding problems. The association is also planning its annual general meeting and community barbecue for members and volunteers in September. For more information, see www.burnaby douglas.ca.

Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words I’m a B.C. boy – born and raised in Richmond. I began playing football while attending high school at Vancouver College and continued to develop my skills during my university career at Simon Fraser. I have been a fan of the Black and Orange all my life and distinctly remember attending Lions games at BC Place in the 1980s. My brother Mark was briefly a Lion in 1990 – so football genes definitely run in my family! After 10 seasons with the Lions, I still can’t believe that I get to come to work every day and play the game I love, and I’m more determined than ever to bring the Grey Cup home to B.C. at least one more time during my career. As one of the longest-serving veterans on the team and the guy anchoring the offensive line in the centre position, I take a leadership role in the locker room and am sometimes looked to for advice by the younger players. Our team — and the O-line in particular — is like a family to me and I’m proud of my contributions in the locker room and on the field. As the second-youngest of six kids in my family, I looked up to my older siblings when I was growing up for inspiration and guidance. For that reason, I love taking part in the Lions’ community programs throughout the year, particularly the club’s Lions in the House initiative. It makes me feel proud to know that I could have a positive influence on a young person who is at a very important time in their life. As much as I love playing professional football, I believe it’s also important to give back to the community you grew up in and set a good example for the next generation. Angus Reid in action. can count on one hand the number of places where I can order a dish off the menu that costs $2. Heck, you can’t even order a drink for under $2 at most places but don’t try telling that to Colin Wong and Simon Lai, who just opened the Cattle Café at 4883 Kingsway in July. For $2, you can order a peanut butter and jelly sandwich – comfort food at a comfortable price – but spend a couple of more dollars and you’ll have more than enough of
a meal. If you’re adventurous, try the marinated pork intestines or marinated pig’s knuckles at $4.25 each. Or if you can’t decide, get both for $5.75. Go all the way to $8.95 and you’re looking at a rib eye steak with mushrooms cooked in red wine. Any way you look at it, the Cattle Café is offering up some of the best food bargains in the city. “I think our advantage is we are a food wholesaler so we can source out the freshest ingredients and offer them at the lowest prices,” said Wong, who’s run Deltason Trading, a food distributor, for the past 12 years. “We decided to branch out into restaurants because we saw a market opportunity.” Five years ago, Wong opened the Cattle Hot Pot

The signature dish at the Cattle Café is the fish soup noodle combo for $7.25, where you get a tasty fish broth, choice of noodles and choice of two meats to go in the soup. concept to Burnaby. “The whole idea behind Cattle Café is that in the Chinese culture, we try and use all parts of the cattle,” said Wong. “That’s important, to not waste anything. … I think people who try everything, or those who try something new, will be surprised at how good some of these dishes are.” Having already eaten my fair share of pig’s feet, chicken livers, pork intestines and the such in my life, I decided to go a safer

at the most affordable prices.” I went with a large mango slushie ($4.55), and it was as refreshing as expected. “My personal favourite is the blueberry slushie,” said Wong. “We also have a lot of people who love our bubble tea.” Wong has spent a lot of time in Asia sourcing out the best deals for Deltason. During those travels, he saw the proliferation of bubble tea kiosks and Chinese quick-serve restaurants. With a hearty Asian population in the Lower Mainland, Wong thought the concept of combining the two might work. “We are happy with how things have gone at our two locations,” he said. “We’re also looking at other locations in the Lower Mainland.” I can’t emphasize the affordability of Cattle Café enough. On top of the already reasonable prices, the Cattle Café offers diners monthly specials, which bring down the bottom-line even more. “We want to offer the healthiest, freshest food at the best prices,” Wong said. “We want as many people to be able to enjoy our food.” Judging by the lineups I witnessed there on a Monday night – traditionally the slowest night for all restaurants – Wong and Lai seem to be on the right track.

Barracudas sweep water polo gold at regionals The Burnaby Barracudas won gold in all four age groups at the Simon Fraser regional water polo championships at City Centre Aquatics Complex in Coquitlam Saturday. Burnaby will send teams in the under-12, -14, -16 and -18 and open age groups to the provincial championships in Kamloops Aug. 16 to 18. The Barracudas doubled Port Moody 9-4 in the u-18 P4 division. Burnaby came back from a 3-1 halftime deficit to take the lead 5-4 on P3 callup Shanan D’souza’s fourth goal of the game. Kyle Jung added three scores, while Bobby Chieng and Sever Topan also tallied. In the u-16 final, Burnaby humiliated Coquitlam 15-1 in the gold-medal final. Chieng led the way with four markers, while Abdul Himamov and D’souza
added hat tricks. Brian Huynh chipped in with two counters, and T.J. Jones, Jenna Melton and Natalie Murao also scored. The P2 group edged Coquitlam 7-6 in the u-14 championship final. U-12 callup Reuel D’souza scored the game-winning goal with just 27 seconds left in an otherwise close game. It was D’souza’s sixth goal of the contest. Gareth Jones also scored for Burnaby. In the u-12 division, Burnaby overwhelmed the opposition in round-robin play before blanking Port Moody 17-0 in the final game. Reuel D’souza led the scoring for the P1s, firing four goals in the championship game. Wilson Chieng connected on three goals for the winners, while Daniel Kolocka, Sandro Miletic and Luka Maletic all scored two apiece.
Burnaby’s Alex Calbick was named to the World junior baseball all-tournament team in Thunder Bay, Ont. Calbick, who will be attending the University of Maine on a baseball scholarship in the fall, was named to the all-star team as an outfielder following Canada’s fourth-place finish at the Junior World Baseball Championships Sunday. Teammate Philip Diedrick was also selected to the team as a designated hitter. Calbick led Canada at the plate, finishing third overall in individual batting with a sizzling .550 average, including a teambest 11 hits and six runs scored. The Premier Baseball League Coquitlam Reds infielder hit more than .540 against both right and lefthanders, and .607 as a pinch hitter. His leadoff percentage was a near-perfect .800. Canada lost to Cuba in the bronze medal game 8-2. Calbick knocked in Diedrick for the first of Canada’s runs in the sixth inning in the final. “I’m happy with the way it end. We were a bit disappointed we didn’t get a medal but fourth in the world isn’t too shabby,” said Calbick. “Against teams like Cuba, Korea, the United States and Chinese Taipei it’s always difficult to get to the medal round. The day before, Canada lost a late semifinal matchup 3-1 to eventual champion Chinese Taipei. In that game, Calbick doubled to centre field in the fourth inning and then scored from third on a fielder’s choice to give Canada its only run of the game. But, the 12-hour turnaround proved too much for the host Canadians. “That’s the reality of it, that’s what makes these Baseball Page 20

tournaments special, and unfortunately we didn’t bounce back,” said Canada’s head coach Greg Hamilton in a Baseball Canada press release. “When you look at some of the teams that are behind you, it’s not an embarrassment. We can hold our heads high. We competed really well.” Canada finished first in Pool B with a 4-1 record. The only loss for the Canadians in the preliminary round was a 3-0 loss to Cuba on July 24. A big moment for Calbick and Canada was its round-robin win over defending world champion South Korea. “We came out and competed that night,” he said. Calbick registered two hits in Canada’s 5-4 win over Korea, which
also finished with a 4-1 record in Pool B. Calbick led off a big four-run first inning for Canada with a base on balls. He advanced to second on a walk and got to third on a wild pitch before he was later called out at home on a play at the plate. Diedrick then clubbed a grand slam home run to clear the bases. In the second inning, Calbick got on base again with a single to right field. He went to left field for his second hit of the game in the fourth, but the next two batters went down swinging. Canada earned a spot in the semifinals with an 11-1 win over Italy. Calbick had two hits and one run in the game. The United States, the winners of
Pool A with a 5-0 record, were upset in the crossover playoff 3-2 by Cuba. Calbick played in seven games for Canada, starting in four of them. He led the junior national squad with a .609 on-base percentage. “Starting on the bench was a little disappointing, but when I got my opportunity, I did my best to help the team out,” Calbick said. “It was pretty special to come third in the batting race. But just being with the guys, getting to play for Canada and just getting the opportunity to represent my country is an honour in itself.” Calbick also led the team with 1.57 hits per game through the tournament. He will be flying off to school near the end of August. In Maine, Calbick will study civil engineering.

Burrards fall again in senior B lacrosse
For the second consecutive season, the Burnaby Burrards exited the West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association playoffs without a win. The league champion Burrards fell 12-10 to the Nanaimo Timbermen in Game 3 of their best-of-five semifinal playoff July 27. Rob Brommer led Burnaby with a four-point night, including a hat trick, while teammate Matt Demkier added two goals and two assists in a losing cause. Burnaby fell behind 10-5 after two periods, but could not catch up despite a 5-2 third period. The Burrards dropped its first two games of the playoffs 13-9 to the T-Men. Fortunately for the Burrards, the early exit from the playoffs will not spoil their chances for a President’s Cup. Burnaby will play host to the Canadian senior B national championships at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre from Aug. 16 to 21.

Jason Lang/burnaby now
Mountain high: Mountain FC, in white, finished the under-16 boys’ Super-Y League soccer season in first place with nine wins in 10 games, following a recent 3-0 victory over the West Coast Capitals at Burnaby Lake Sports Complex-West.
Setting the Games record straight There were a couple of errors in the NOW’s coverage of last week’s B.C. Summer Games held in Langley. Keila Stark of Burnaby was not given credit for winning a second silver medal in swimming. Stark won both the girls’ 100 and 200-metre breaststroke in swimming. Her time in the 200m qualified her for the age group
nationals. The Zone 4 girls’ softball team was also shortchanged. The team was in fact the gold-medal winner, beating Fraser Valley 8-2 in the championship final. Burnaby Oakeys ’96 players Madison Newman of Burnaby and New Westminster’s Meghan Malkowich shared a gold with the Fraser River Delta squad.
Wild win for red at junior national hockey camp Ryan Nugent-Hopkins of Burnaby sparked a threegoal third period to help Team Red win a wild 8-7 victory over White at the national men’s under-18 selection camp in Calgary Sunday. Nugent-Hopkins tied the score 6-6 six minutes into the final frame in the first of three games, which wrapped up Tuesday at the Father David Bauer Olympic Arena. Following the final game, the coaching staff will select a 22-player roster that will represent Canada at the 2010 Memorial Ivan Hlinka competition in the Czech Republic and Slovakia Aug. 10 to 14.

Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival - A volunteer’s day in the sun The sun is shining, people move happily around the festival lawn and snippets of guitar filter through the crowd. The Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival is a wonderful experience, according to three of this year’s volunteers. “The atmosphere is great,” says Sandy Fesiuk, a longtime Burnaby resident. “Everybody’s in a really good mood.” Fesiuk has volunteered with the festival for years, along with the two other longtime volunteers. The trio helps with Shadbolt events as well as the festivals held at Deer Lake Park – the Rhododendron Festival, the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra concert and Discovery Day, as well as the blues fest. Each of the 60 volunteers works about a fourhour shift, and is then able to check out the music, according to Fesiuk. Elaine Koochin, also a longtime resident, has only missed volunteering at two festivals, she says. She also volunteers at the Vancouver Jazz Festival and Music Fest.

How loud is too loud? Noise-induced hearing damage is related to the duration and volume of exposure. The safe exposure limit is 85 decibels for eight hours a day. Some common decibel levels:

From right: Elaine Koochin, volunteer coordinator Shelley Twist, Vi Jantzen and Sandy Fesiuk prepare for the Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival.
The blues fest has shifted over the years to include more roots-based music, Koochin says. “There’s good music and lots of people,” she says. “There’s such a variety (of music).” She loves volunteering for an event where everyone is enjoying themselves, she adds. “Nobody ever leaves saying, ‘I had a crummy time’,” Koochin says. Vi Jantzen has lived in
Burnaby for about 35 years, she says, and has volunteered with the festival for five years. “I like the atmosphere, the celebration of music,” Jantzen says. “There’s a happy mood that’s there all the time.” The festival has all the volunteers needed for this year, but those interested in volunteering in 2011 should contact the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts. – By Janaya Fuller-Evans

City hotels put up musicians for Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival Two Burnaby hotels are giving back to the community by providing complimentary rooms to recording artists and those involved in the Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival. The hotels have also booked local blues acts to play in their entertainment venues during Burnaby Blues Week leading up to the festival. The new Delta Burnaby Hotel has turned over 20 comped room nights for the festival to the City of Burnaby, according to the executive general manager of the Grand Villa Casino, Matthew Ballesty. The casino includes the Delta Burnaby Hotel, and the Scalla Lounge and Ebo Restaurant, where
local British Columbian blues musicians will play in advance of the festival. Because of the hotel’s proximity to Deer Lake Park, it made sense to provide accommodations to musicians and those involved with the festival, he said. Providing a place for musicians to play also fell in line with what Grand Villa is about, according to Ballesty. Lesismore will play Thursday, Aug. 12 and Friday, Aug. 13, prior to Saturday’s festival, at Ebo Restaurant at the Delta Burnaby Hotel from 6 to 10 p.m. Taylor James plays the Scala Lounge at the Grand Villa Casino
from 9 to 11 p.m. on Thursday. The Hilton Vancouver Metrotown is also involved in sponsoring the festival. The hotel has also provided comped rooms for the festival, according to Denis Nokony, assistant director of cultural services for the City of Burnaby. Burnaby’s own Kenny “Blues Boss” Wayne will play the Hilton’s Reflect Social Dining and Lounge on Thursday and Friday from 7 to 11 p.m. Both hotels are offering special blues festival room packages, which include two festival tickets, for August 13 and 14. – By Janaya Fuller-Evans

Sounds of Summer winner Zaac Pick to Burnaby guitar craftsman selling wares at blues festival play Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival Burnaby’s Tom Wray began building guitars when he was 12 years old. His father, a woodcraft enthusiast who was confined to a wheelchair, would enlist young Wray to help him with projects. As a kid, he hated it, he says, but now he is grateful for the skills his father taught him.
Contributed/burnaby now
In Tune: Burnaby’s Tom Wray will be selling
his handcrafted guitars at the Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival’s artisan market.
His first guitar was a Gibson-style dreadnought. Today, Wray makes Flamenco, Mini Jumbo, 000 and travel guitars, as well as the dreadnaught. Materials are key, Wray says, adding that keeping the guitar as light as possible while making it strong enough is important. “It needs to be strong enough to stand about 175 pounds of pressure,” he says. The difference between factory-built and handmade guitars is that factory guitars are usually heavier, he says, as the makes don’t want to risk any flaws.
“They overbuild them,” Wray says, “and they (the guitars) aren’t quite as responsive.” Hand-built custom guitars can also be made to have whatever string spacing the player requires, to fit his or her individual hand size, he says. The instruments can also be built to cater to those with shoulder or elbow injuries, Wray adds. Wray was one of the first batch of artisans at the new market at the Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival last year and enjoyed the experience. “It went great, I loved it,” he says, adding the natural setting for the festival was the best of the four he was selling at that year. In 2009, Wray took his guitars to festivals on Vancouver Island, and in Mission and Salmon Arm, as well as in Burnaby, he says. “It was by far the nicest venue.” As many people played his guitars in the one day of the Burnaby festival as at the other multi-day festivals, he adds. “About 400 people played my guitars,” Wray says. He’ll be bringing a mini jumbo, 000, Flamenco guitar and a ukulele to his spot at the artisans’ market this year. Other artisans include fellow Burnabyite Rita Khimani, who will be offering exotic henna tattoos on site. There should be about 11 artisans this year, according to Julie-Anne Slade, the special events officer for the city who is in charge of organizing the market. Displays range from airbrushed and henna tattoos to neon artwork, from guitars to toe jewelry. – By Janaya Fuller-Evans
Vancouver’s Zaac Pick has won Shore FM’s Sounds of Summer contest with his song, My Century. Pick will grace the stage at this year’s Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival as part of his win. The Sounds of Summer Song Search was a songwriting contest open to artists living in B.C. The other nine finalists were: Reid Jamieson’s Rail, Robert Wilson’s Big Sore Heart, Quest Poetics’ Phantom of Smiles, Lindsay May’s Lie to You, The Matinée’s Let Her Go, The Belle Game’s Tiny Fires, Scott Valentine’s Do it for Love, Garret Kato’s Mountains, and Headwater’s Brown Stone Road. The winner was announced at the Celebration of Light fireworks finale in Vancouver on July 31. Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo announced the winner live at the SHOREfest stage in English Bay. Pick will play at the Burnaby Blues and Roots Festival on August 14, along with Taj Mahal,

Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Serena Ryder, Lukas Nelson and the Promise of the Real, Colin Linden, Yukon Blonde and Little Miss Higgins. Shore FM is a sponsor of the blues festival. Colin Linden, one of the performers, is the voice of Shore 104.3 FM, according to Patrick Zulinov, program director for the station. “We actually play a lot of the musicians featured at the festival,” Zulinov said. “It’s a good match.” The Shore will have a
tent at the festival, and staff will be handing out tattoos, lip balm, T-shirts, and other goodies, Zulinov added. Terry McBride, cofounder of Nettwerk Music Group, and music promoters Bruce Allen and Sam Feldman chose the final winner. Pick will get studio time at Nimbus studio, a four-song EP, $5,000 in gift certificates from Tom Lee Music, and an EPK video by Insider Films. – By Janaya Fuller-Evans
