Private partner sought Province issues call for proposals to help finance long-awaited Evergreen Line Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter

The provincial government has issued a request for qualifications from possible private partners to help finance the Evergreen Line. The announcement came just one week after Burnaby council decided to press the provincial government to secure funding for the project. The lack of private partner commitments as of yet was one of the issues mentioned in a staff report presented to council. The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure is looking for three private partners capable of designing, building and financing the rapid transit project, running from Lougheed Town Centre to Coquitlam Town Centre. “I’m excited about it,” Liberal MLA Harry Bloy said. “We were always committed to building the line.” The request for qualifications closes on Sept. 7. Up to three respondents will be selected to compete in the request for proposal stage. Construction is scheduled

An increase in oil tanker traffic in Burrard Inlet is a concern to everyone, according to Mayor Derek Corrigan. But Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson needs to speak with other affected municipalities before moving ahead on the issue, he added. “I think all of us have been aware that oil tanker traffic has been increasing,” he said, adding it isn’t clear where the increase is coming from. Kinder Morgan, which operates a pipeline and terminal in Burnaby, has talked about expanding in the past but that hasn’t happened yet, as far as he knows, Corrigan said. As for the increased traffic, it isn’t a new issue, he added. “I certainly didn’t see this as being an emergency,” he said, adding it seemed like a dramatic reaction to the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. Corrigan’s comments came after Robertson called a special meeting of Vancouver city councillors to discuss the amount of tankers in the inlet following the oil leak in the Gulf. That meeting took place on Monday night, with councillors asking industry experts a variety of questions. Vancouver councillors met again to discuss the issue on Tuesday, after NOW deadlines. According to Corrigan, the Chevron oil refinery and the Kinder Morgan pipeline have been the major issues, oil-wise, for the Lower Mainland, and efforts to protect the environment and communities should start there. On April 21, a mixture of gas, diesel and crude oil was found seeping out of the ground near the Chevron oil refinery in North Burnaby. Library opens at youth prison Connection to Burnaby school district expands offerings for teens in custody centre Jennifer Moreau staff reporter

Local school district librarians have revamped the library at Fraser Park Secondary inside Burnaby’s youth prison. The prison library is now connected to the school district’s library database so students in prison can have books transferred from other schools. “We have never had a connection with the Burnaby school district library, and this has given us the opportunity to do that,” said Andrew Cronkhite, the Burnaby Youth Custody Services director of programs. “It’s going to give them access to books I think will be more interesting to them. Of course, that will encourage their reading.” The centre is one three provincial youth prisons. It’s located in South Burnaby, close to the Fraser River in the former women’s prison. Most of the kids there are from the Lower Mainland and the Interior. Fraser Park Secondary is a series of classrooms within the prison, where young offenders can work on graduating while in custody.

Cronkhite said the library books are for the roughly 60 kids enrolled in Fraser Park Secondary at any given time, which is about 95 per cent of the youth staying there. There were some books already at the prison, but librarians went through the materials and took out all the non-teen-

related books and brought in new ones from other schools. The youth will also have access to resource books for school projects, Cronkhite added. The prison hosted a ceremony on June 23 to mark the opening, and youth were already taking books out that day, Cronkhite said.

Body found in park identified

The Burnaby RCMP has confirmed the identity of the person whose remains were found in Central Park on July 1. The investigators are working with the coroner to determine the cause of death. Police say that the deceased man was reported missing by his family. They are requesting privacy. A woman found the remains while walking her dog in Central Park on Canada Day. She made the grisly discovery around 1 p.m. and called the police, according to a Burnaby RCMP press release.

Foul play was not suspected at the time, according to the press release. Police were not providing any further information by press time.

Terrier attacks officer

His bite was about as bad as his bark. A small dog belonging to two suspects hung on to an officer’s pant legs by his teeth as the officer made an arrest last week. The officer was part of a group of Burnaby RCMP responding to a call of shots fired in the area of Byrne Road and Lowland Drive on July 1

at 6 p.m. A man and woman were arrested, and the man is facing firearms-related charges after a rifle was seized at the scene. The area was quickly contained and the suspect vehicle was stopped as it was spotted leaving the area. During the arrest, the small Jack Russell terrier dog belonging to the suspects left their vehicle and approached a plainclothes officer. The dog began chewing on his pants and leg. the seepage and contain it, while cleaning up the area. In 2007, a Kinder Morgan pipeline ruptured in Burnaby, spilling 230 cubic metres of oil on 50 nearby homes and seeping into Burrard Inlet. Corrigan said the tanker issue should be discussed at a standing committee meeting for all port cities and that Vancouver should “try to play with others better.” There has been a large increase in tanker traffic over the past decade, according to a Port Metro Vancouver report released in February. Tankers now transport 10 times the amount of oil transported 10 years ago. Shipments rose 77 per cent from last year to 3.9 million metric tonnes, according to the report. The local oil shipping industry went from 42 ships in 2008 to 65 in 2009 at Westridge Marine Terminal in Burnaby. The tankers pass through Second Narrows and can only do so at high tide because it is a very shallow body of water. Oil tankers in Vancouver have a 100,000-tonne capacity. Burrard Clean, the oil cleanup agency for the area, can only deal with spills of 10,000 tonnes, and then the federal government has to

step in, a Burrard Clean representative told council. “(Given) the horrific scene we have witnessed in the Gulf of Mexico, more and more questions are being raised about the current situation in Vancouver, the safety standards in place and the long-term plans for Burrard Inlet,” Robertson said in an interview with The Province before the meeting.

Darrell Mussatto, chair of the Metro Vancouver port cities committee and mayor of North Vancouver, said he would like to see the issue brought to the committee. Robertson chaired the meeting with industry representatives on Monday. Presenters included Capt. Stephen Brown, president of the B.C. Chamber of Shipping; a B.C. Ministry

of Environment representative; and oceanographer Peter Baker. Representatives from Port Metro Vancouver, Greenpeace, Transport Canada, the Pacific Pilotage Authority, the Georgia Straight Alliance, Burrard Clean and city staff were also on hand to answer questions. – with files from The Province

Sure, Carole James, along with other members of the NDP, was at the anti-HST rally at Canada Place, but for the most part she has been rather quiet on the issue ever since. This causes the people to wonder just what the NDP is willing to do about it if elected. People are not going to vote NDP unless a firm commitment is made to repeal the HST. We don’t want to hear after a win that it would be just too costly to repeal the HST because people have been lied to and deceived by the Liberals, and we need to

Publish the studies on HST

Dear Editor:

Re: HST will help B.C.’s economy, In My Opinion, Premier Gordon Campbell, Burnaby NOW, July 3. An open letter to Premier Gordon Campbell: After the HST has come on, I’ll have to spend $420 more to maintain the same standard of living. On top of that, I’ll have to pay seven per cent more on some items, which were PST-free in the good old days. If the government needs more revenue to make ends meet, I don’t mind the sacrifice by paying a little bit more tax. However, your good self and the finance minister have been saying that the change over to HST is revenue-neutral. British Columbians were given the impression that the new tax would go to business organizations to reduce their costs and, thus, attract investments into the province. May I ask how? It seems that the answer is in your paragraph 9. Would it create jobs? Would it give business the ability to pay higher wages and lower prices? Study after study confirmed the HST would do all those things.

Do you honestly believe this? If you want to convince the people, please publish the studies, let them examine them to see whether the conclusions are accurate and not made-up stories. One more thing, Mr. Premier, is you should have done the above before the change. If the HST is really good for British Columbia, the province won’t die just because the new tax comes into being six months later.

Citizens don’t want HST

Dear Editor:

Re: HST will help British Columbia, Letters to the editor, Burnaby NOW, May 22 Judging by the widespread opposition, the people of Burnaby do not want the HST, and our Liberal MLAs need to respect that. These backbenchers each garnered less than 26 per cent of the eligible vote, yet they continue to support their government’s position on this unpopular tax. The HST undoubtedly will benefit many businesses and may even add jobs to the economy, but it is not something the citizens of B.C. want or need at this time. For once, it would be encouraging for Liberal MLAs to stand up for their constituents rather than be mouthpieces for Gordon Campbell and his corporate supporters. Ultimately, these MLAs will be turfed in due time, but not before selling off their province’s wealth and eroding our democratic foundations. Rick McGowan, Burnaby

HST: Businesses step in fray entrenched in the public’s mind. The fact that companies contribute vast sums of money to the B.C. Liberals is not surprising and not a new development. However, it is the party’s avowed pro-business policies that make it hard for many people to distinguish where the interests of the business community end and where the interests of the B.C. Liberal government begin. Whether it’s chopping corporate tax rates, weakening employment standards, subsidizing a private power industry, easing regulations for resource companies or stubbornly refusing to raise the minimum wage (which now lags behind the one in Newfoundland,

of all places), the B.C. Liberal government has made it clear where it hangs its ideological hat. So if the business groups – the B.C. Chamber of Commerce, the Council of Forest Industries and the Coast Forest Products Association, among others – succeed in swatting the initiative down, the general public will view the result as a poorly masked manoeuvre by the B.C. Liberals. The last thing the government should wish for right now is something to further enhance the chances of a successful recall against its MLAs. But a successful court action by the business community could very well do just that. If the business groups were truly concerned about the anti-HST peti-

tion going forward, they should have launched their legal challenge at the beginning of the petition process, not at the end of it. At the very least, the business community should have mounted its own counter-campaign against Vander Zalm if it was genuinely concerned the HST was better for the economy than not. As much as the B.C. Liberals fumbled their handling of the HST, so too has the business community bumbled along in its own dealings with the red-hot political issue. The changing face of the South Slope Longtime resident says trees are vanishing and houses are getting increasingly larger Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter

The face of the South Slope neighbourhood has changed immensely over the past 50 years, according to Rumble Street resident Judy Murdoch. Developed in the 1940s and ‘50s, the neighbourhood has seen small homes on big lots replaced by larger homes on subdivided lots. In Murdoch’s portion of Rumble Street, there are only three original homes left, she said. “All the rest have been built since the 1980s,” Murdoch said. “Virtually every house around here is new and is three to four times the size of the house that was there.” Because of this, many of the area’s large trees have been cut down, according to Murdoch. “When you look up at South Slope, it still looks like there’s lots of trees,” said Murdoch, who lived in the area between 1954 and 1976, and again from 1985 until now. But, she added, the difference is noticeable at street level, when looking at the properties in the area. There are fewer large evergreens. “It’s disheartening,” she said.

The rate of large trees being removed increased following the windstorm of 2006, said Murdoch. “It was as if people became afraid of large trees,” she said. “Chainsaws were going everywhere.” This spring was no exception, she added. In cases where trees cannot legally be removed because of Burnaby’s tree bylaw, the trees are often limbed or capped, Murdoch said. This can cause the trees to become infected or damaged if the cuts are too severe, she pointed out. “It looks awful, and it allows illness to set in,” Murdoch said. Developers are required to replace any trees that are larger than 20.3 cm in diameter, according to the city’s tree bylaw, enacted in 1996. But the replacement trees, which must be at least three metres tall in the case of deciduous trees and eight centimetres in diameter in the case of coniferous trees, are not nearly as large as the trees they replace, Murdoch said. “Once a tree is gone it’s gone,” she said. “You can’t replace a 60- or 100-year-old tree.” She described some of the newer developments as “moonscapes” once all the trees were removed. One older property with an orchard on one side and evergreens on the other was subdivided after the owner passed away, Murdoch said, and replaced with two larger homes. The South Slope Page 10

The project could bring Brentwood and Lougheed town centres to the same level of use as Metrotown and Pacific Centre, he said, because Coquitlam residents could access the centres more easily. “It think it will benefit Lougheed and Brentwood greatly,” Bloy, MLA for BurnabyLougheed, said. He addressed Burnaby council’s suggestion that the optional Cameron station be added to the

initial plan, saying there is just not enough density to warrant it. “Other cities have worked on that,” Bloy said. “There’s not enough density to put one there. It’s not even close to that yet.” He added that Mayor Derek Corrigan and council would have to improve density in the area if they want a station there. Council discussed the Evergreen Line at a meeting on June 5, just days after TransLink presented its draft 2011 Base Plan and Outlook report to Metro Vancouver. The report indicates that TransLink will not have funding for major expansions, including

In one case, when a neighbour was removing a large cedar tree in their yard, pulling out the root ball created a sinkhole in her yard, Murdoch said. Murdoch would like to see a stronger bylaw, with stronger consequences, enforced. “The city doesn’t have the enforcement capacity (it needs),” she said, adding many developers consider any fines part of the cost of doing business. If a property owner applies to remove a tree they then have to replace, the city requires a bond of $800 or 120 per cent of the cost of the replacement tree until a tree is planted. The bylaw states that protected trees can only be cut down after an occupancy permit for the property has been issued or three months before a demolition permit is issued, Geoff Gooderham, landscape development technician for the city, pointed out. If the city checks on a new development, and there are stumps on the property that were not there before the permit was issued, the developer is required to plant a replacement tree. But this can be difficult to enforce. “We have to figure out how old that stump is,” Gooderham explained. He also pointed out that there isn’t a specific oneto-one requirement for replacing trees. In some cases, a developer may remove five or 10 trees but only plant one or two to replace them, depending on the size of the property. Advertisement

There are few better ways to celebrate Canada Day than playing a little street hockey followed by a barbecue with friends, but Simon Fraser University communications student Richard Loat took the annual tradition further. A lot further actually – probably 6,000 kilometres or so. Loat, 21, who is better known by his online handle Mozy thanks

to his time-intensive Twitter presence and well-trafficked blog for the Vancouver Canucks website, is currently on a gruelling 10-day cross-Canada tour that will see him play ball hockey in a total of nine cities while also collecting food donations and money for local food banks. Dubbed Five Hole For Food (a “five hole” being, of course, the space between a goalie’s legs), the grand voyage kicked off June 29 in Montreal and will hit streets in Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton and Victoria before ending in Vancouver on Friday, July 9. “Everyone had a great time

and we had a lot of people come out,” said Loat via cellphone the day after playing the tour’s first game in Île-Perrot, an island in the Saint Lawrence just west of Montreal. “We raised just under 200 pounds of food. It was a great way to kick things off given that it was the first year of the event and the first stop. I expect things wll only gain momentum and we’ll go out with a bang in Vancouver.” After putting the word out online, Loat quickly rounded up a team of like-minded fellow bloggers and hockey fanatics across the country who’ve jumped over

the boards to support the cause. The initial plan was to get food companies to make donations for every goal scored. Instead, the somewhat hastily orpanized tour – which sees Loat and copilot Victor Lo “driving in style” between cities in a donated Audi S8 – will rely on people who show up to watch or play bringing non-perishable food items and/or cash donations (which can also be made online through www.fiveholeforfood.com). The two are hoping to end up with a total of one ton (2,000 pounds) of donated food by the time the final buzzer sounds on their road hockey road trip.

The last game was originally set to be played at the court at Vancouver’s Sunset Beach Park, but Loat said he just been informed the city has instead given permission to use the 800block of downtown Granville Street for the 5:30 p.m. game. Prizes available for both spectators or participants include a stick signed by current members of the Vancouver Canucks and lots of other Canucks, Vancouver Giants and Abbotsford Heat swag. The three local teams’ mascots will also all be in attendance. “We couldn’t ask for a better location,” said Loat.

courage to deal with the detours and challenges of life – with illness, tragedy and loss. It can help you thrive as your body ages and the years behind you outnumber the years ahead. It allows you to endure when you appear to have lost everything and are asked to begin again.

It is not an egocentric self-adoration of our superficial selves or a preoccupation with our own personal interests. It is a compassionate acceptance of our value as individual human beings, deserving of happiness and love. In a happy and healthy adult, a positive sense of self-worth is all these things. It underlies all that we do – how we think, how we speak, how we act and how we love. A healthy sense of self-worth recognizes the value and worthiness in the people around us. It assures us that we deserve to be happy just as those around us also deserve happiness. It allows us to love others, and it allows us to accept their love. But such a positive sense of self-worth is not a gift we are all given at birth. It is learned. If we feel unloved as children, if we are grow up in an environment of negativity and criticism, or if we suffer emotional, physical or sexual abuse, we come to believe that we are unworthy, unloved and unvalued. We may learn to feel helpless and never try to escape a suffocating and blinding cage of unhappiness. In upcoming columns, I’ll explore our responsibilities as parents and teachers in nurturing healthy self-worth in our children, how abusive experiences and relationships demean our sense of self-worth, and how we may be able to overcome our past and ourselves to rebuild a sense of self-worth. Question: Our lawn has been decimated due to chafer beetles, and I would like to get rid of the grass. Can you suggest an evergreen, low-growing, quick-spreading ground cover that will tolerate some foot traffic to replace the grass? – Mary, Vancouver Answer: A quick-growing

ground-cover may not make you happy in the long run All ground-covers are invasive, and the quick-growing ones need extra vigilance to stop them infiltrating into your garden beds. One of the better lawn alternatives is white clover. It’s amenable to most soils, it’s drought-tolerant, and its deep, tough roots are unappetizing to chafer larvae. It can go for weeks without mowing and is fairly resilient to foot traffic (though not as durable as grass). As well, white-flowered clover is a sun-loving legume that actually

improves the soil by fixing nitrogen at its roots. The flowers attract honey bees and native bees to your garden, where they’ll hang around and pollinate flowers and fruit. The biggest negative is that it’s usually grown from seed. This means it will take a few months for good coverage – though friends who look on white clover as a weed might be happy to have you dig plants out of their lawns. If garden centres can’t help with clover seed, I suggest you try www. oscseeds.com. This is a Canadian company based in Ontario. It offers sev-

eral lawn alternatives. But I should mention that Crownvetch is on invasive plant lists and Sweet Woodruff has become a nightmare for many gardeners. If your lawn is sunny and well-drained, creeping thyme can handle some foot traffic. Creeping thyme has tiny pink flowers in summer and is beautifully fragrant when trod on. If your soil is heavy, amend the top few inches by digging in sand. If your lawn is shady or part shady, you might try violets or Geranium maccrorhizum, which has pink flowers much of

the summer. Bugleweed (Ajuga reptans) is also good in shade and has spectacular 10-centimetre spikes of bright blue flowers (sometimes pink or white) in spring. But the quickest shade carpeter of anything I’ve mentioned so far is Creeping Jenny – especially when started from plants. If your lawn is very shady and your soil wants to make moss, why not let it? Moss doesn’t stand hard use and is slippy for running feet but can handle occasional, gentle walking. Send garden questions to amarrison@shaw.ca.

BCIT has produced its first batch of civil engineers. On June 24, 13 civil engineering students from the British Columbia Institute of Technology made history as they graduated from the school’s newly accredited degree program. The Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board granted accreditation to the school’s fouryear bachelor of engineering program, the first time such a program has been accredited at a school that is not a university, according to a BCIT press release. “We are very proud to be recognized by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board,” said Don Wright, president of BCIT, in the press release. “This is a very important milestone for civil engineering at BCIT, one that will help our grads to continue contributing to the prosperity of British Columbia and indeed, to the country.” The program has received full accreditation for three years, which is the maximum accreditation

The Burnaby location opened in July 2009, and Lum has been very pleased with how business has gone. “We’re very happy with how the neighbourhood has embraced us,” said Lum. “And we’re continually adding to our menu so that you can literally have something different every time you come here.” On a recent sunny afternoon, I sat down with Lum and Chaube and tasted some of the finest casual dining in Burnaby. We started with the sliders ($8.79), three loaded mini cheeseburgers with Yukon jack sauce. They were pretty good, with the sauce perfectly complementing the beef, but as in old-time figure skating marks, I can’t hand out my 6.0 rating until I’ve taste-tested sliders all throughout Vancouver.

We then went with the shrimp gyoza ($6.99), which is a great dish with an Oriental twist. Next came the undercard combo ($10.99), which is a nice sampling of appies, including dry ribs, wings, chips and fresh veggies, complete with three dipping sauces: the plum, red aioli and ranch. For my money, the red aioli is the best, with just enough of a bite to keep you interested. That got me warmed up for the requisite wings – which were the three chili-pepper-rated Jakarta heat wings ($7.69 per pound regular price or $1 for a sampler wing). “Jesse wanted to create something that wasn’t as hot as the Bobby wings, so that’s how we got the Jakarta wings on the

menu,” said Chaube. (Bobby wings, for those who haven’t dared try them, are described halfjokingly on the menu as needing a signed release form to order them.) “We’ve gotten some great feedback on those wings, and it’s becoming one of our most popular wings.” For my main, I had to go with Chaube’s personal suggestion of the salmon motoyaki ($14.79). The mayo glaze on the wild sockeye salmon made this dish something you’d find at a high-end dining establishment. “Jesse has created some great dishes, and we even had a charity auction recently where people bid $1,000 to have a meal specially made for them by Jesse,” said Chaube. The Slice 2010 Raises $107,610 for Burnaby Hospital

urnaby Hospital Foundation’s signature event, The Slice, celebrated an astounding success on Friday, June 18, raising $107,610 to help purchase vital equipment needed at Burnaby Hospital. “This is a significant achievement towards this year’s goal of $3 million for Burnaby Hospital’s highest priority equipment needs,” said Marcia Harrison, acting president with Burnaby Hospital Foundation. Now in its 24th year, The Slice drew a crowd of over 300 supporters to participate in the annual golf tournament at Riverway Golf Course and evening comedy night at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown. All proceeds from The Slice support Burnaby Hospital Foundation’s goal of raising $3 million to help purchase urgently-needed equipment at Burnaby Hospital.

The beaten-up remains of the McDonald’s have been an eyesore on East Hastings for years, but now residents and business owners can look forward to a new Mediterranean-style development that will bring the Boffo flavour to another section of the Heights.

Rishel Tomlinson’s business has managed to not just survive but thrive since she opened in 2008. Her business, Custom Mortgages has grown to the extent that she has eight staff working from two locations – one in Burnaby and one in Surrey. Though the economic predictions were dire at the beginning of 2009, record-low interest rates actually gave the real estate market a push, which has kept Tomlinson and her team on their toes. “(For) first-time homebuyers, it was great,” Tomlinson said, describing the last year. “It was a tougher year to upgrade because you had to sell in order to buy. It’s an interesting market to be in.” For Tomlinson, the key to her business is to developing

and maintaining relationships. She wants to be the go-to person for all of her clients’ needs. A relationship with Tomlinson doesn’t end when the mortgage papers are signed. She keeps her clients up-to-date with quarterly newsletters about mortgage trends. The entrepreneur majored in economics at UBC, where she earned a bachelorof-arts degree. She entered the mortgage business in 2003, starting as an assistant to a banker-turned-broker with 25 years experience.

It’s the banks not the buyers that pay a finders’ fee to the broker. Custom Mortgages works with chartered banks, credit unions and mortgage banks to get their clients a mortgage deal that works for them.

“We like to start with the clients’ goals”

Tomlinson says her goal is to work with clients to meet their individual needs. “We like to start with the clients’ goals,” Tomlinson says.

The challenge for Tomlinson is to convey to people what mortgages brokers do and how they get paid.

Choi also partnered with Coquitlam’s Jeremy Salvo to win the men’s doubles final as the top seeded pair defeated Vancouver’s Max Brown and West Vancouver’s Jimmy Sherpa 6-3, 6-1.

Lexi Der of Burnaby was one of nine returning cadette national women’s basketball team players named to the training camp roster for the 2010 squad. The 6-1 St. Thomas More Collegiate forward will compete at the camp at the University of Toronto this week along with 28 players for spots on the junior national team and the 3-on-3 team that will be competing at the first-ever Youth Olympic Games. Der joins three other B.C. players at the camp, including Heritage Park forward Erin Chambers, 6-3 Claremont post Shalie Dheensaw and Kamloops guard Taiysa Worsfold. Following the camp, a 12-player squad will be named for the inaugural under-17 world basketball championships to be held in France from July 16 to 25. Last August, Der scored 17 points to help qualify Canada for the upcoming worlds with a second-place finish following a win over Argentina in the semifinals of the u-16 Americas basketball championships for women in Mexico City. Canada will begin its preparation with a tournament the week before against the host country Spain, Australia and the United States. Four athletes will also be named to Canada’s first-ever 3-on-3 team for the Youth Olympics in Singapore in mid-August.

Burnaby will not be the thorn in the backside of the Coquitlam Adanacs in this season’s junior A lacrosse playoffs. The junior Lakers, still very much in contention for a playoff run, dealt away three key players in the team’s past and present success to the first-place Coquitlam Adanacs at the B.C. Junior Lacrosse League trade deadline on June 30. Left-side sniper Riley Loewen, transition runner Nick Bilic and 67 goalie Brodie MacDonald were sent to Coquitlam in return for

intermediate prospect Brenden Shea, Colton Dow, Jeremy Serraglio and the A’s first round draft pick next year. “We’re looking to the future,” said Burnaby president and general manager Richard Appels. “I knew we’d be coming up against Coquitlam in the second round and truthfully, Coquitlam is too strong.” Loewen, who led the Lakers in regular season scoring last year with 48 goals and 72 points, has scored 189 times in his three-year junior A career to date. He has played in just six games to date because of injury Bilic is a 5-11, 195-pound

defender with a sniper’s stick. The second-year Laker currently has 15 goals, including four shorthanded markers and one hat trick, this season. His career shot average is an impressive 42.4 per cent, but his real value is his tremendous work ethic. His total minutes played were also among the highest in the league in the past two seasons. The move was surprising and in direct contrast to the Delta Islanders, who will meet the

Lakers in the first round of the playoffs, beginning Saturday. “We have a problem with the East winning (the Minto Cup) all the time. Coquitlam is the strongest team, let’s give them the best chance possible,” Appels added. “I have no regrets. We’re building for the future.” Delta loaded up prior to the deadline, picking up Port Coquitlam’s top scorers in Darcy Cummings, Trevor Evans and Scott Jones, as well as Matt Laustrup, on June 28. In return, the Saints received 2009 draft picks Josh Fiorovento, Chase Kelliher, Jimmy Lattin, Rob Peterson, Jamie Takiya and

Delta’s first round pick in 2011. Delta also got Nanaimo’s top goalie Zack Boychuck and Steve Higgs from Nanaimo at the trade deadline. Boychuck’s 82.70 save percentage is among the best in the league among starting goalies, and he proved his worth, allowing just three goals in Delta’s 15-3 pasting of Burnaby in the final regular season game for both teams on Sunday. Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words I literally grew up with the CFL. My father Nick was a longtime member of the Montreal Alouettes back in the ’70s and early ’80s and my godfather is former Lions head coach and defensive coordinator Dave Ritchie. I grew up in Burlington, Ont. and attended McMaster University, which is located in nearby Hamilton. One of my biggest thrills was being drafted by the Lions in 2008. I never imagined my career taking off the way it has since then. I enjoy the challenge of playing special teams and I believe that as much as it is talked about, that part of Canadian football is under-rated. You can have a game-changing play each time the ball is kicked and I take pride in that fact. One of the beneﬁts of playing football on the West Coast is being able to make my home here year round. This past year was especially memorable with Olympics festivities going on literally right outside my apartment. I also had the time of my life participating in our club’s community programs. If I had to choose one in particular, I would say Lions in the House is my favourite program to take part in each winter. My parents divorced when I was younger and I believe the experiences I had during those impressionable years have played a big role in the person I am today. I try to have the kids I talk to understand the importance of making positive life choices at a young age because it can have a signiﬁcant impact on their path to adulthood.

Lacklustre Lakers bow down to Delta Tom Berridge sports editor

It was obvious from the start that the junior A Burnaby Lakers and the Delta Islanders were heading in opposite directions. The Islanders, primed with five acquisitions from Port Coquitlam and Nanaimo, overwhelmed what appeared to be a dispirited Laker club 15-3 in the final regular season game for both clubs at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre Sunday. Late last week, Burnaby sent forward Riley Loewen, transition Nick Bilic and goalie Brodie MacDonald to the Coquitlam Adanacs in return for three prospects and a first-round draft pick. The two teams will open their B.C. Junior Lacrosse League playoff

series in Ladner on Saturday. In the last league game for both clubs, Burnaby had no answer for the Islanders in the first two periods, falling behind 7-0 after the opening 20 minutes. Junior B backup Devon Winters came on in relief of starter Patrick Bayliss midway through the first frame with the deficit at 6-0. Bryan Gillis finally broke the Lakers goal drought early in the second period with a long bounce shot that stymied Zack Boychuk, a pickup from Nanaimo at the trade deadline. Delta responded with six unanswered goals in the period to lead 13-1 heading into the final stanza. Jackson Decker and Blake Mattinson replied in the third period for the Lakers.

The Lakers finished the regular season with an overall record of 9-102, just two points behind Delta and three shy of third-place Victoria. “This game hurts more than that trade, but it gave those three guys a chance at a run to the Minto Cup. Good luck to them,” said final year defender Brent Laurita, who missed all of last season rehabilitating his leg following a serious motorcycle injury. “It does hinder us, but you have to play with the cards you are dealt and move on. It’s a business and moves are going to be made … It’s not a betrayal, but it’s not in the players’ power.” In Port Coquitlam, the Lakers overcame a two-goal deficit to post Juniors Page 29

Bad luck dogs Daytona Bad luck reared its ugly head once again for sports car driver Michael Valiante at Daytona Beach, Florida on the July 4 holiday weekend. Valiante, who was in the cockpit of the No. 6 Michael Shank Racing Ford Dallara car, was forced out of GrandAm Rolex Series Brumos 250 sports car race at Daytona International Speedway following a problem with the car’s halfshaft on the 58th lap. The Shank team’s sister car driven by Ozzi Negri and John Pew finished on the podium for a second straight race, placing third in their Ford Riley. Valiante’s co-driver Brian Frisselle qualified the No. 6 car in fourth place and led the race for 12 laps before being forced to pit for a new set of tire rubber and a driver change.

Louis Bernard Noﬁeld January 25, 1920 - July 1, 2010

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing away of Louis at Royal Columbian Hospital in New Westminster. Louis was born in Saskatchewan and leaves behind his loving wife, Maria, and many admiring nieces, nephews, grandchildren, stepsons and friends.
