GIRO DI BURNABY RACE
‘Big one’ returns Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter
Burnaby Heights’ Italian bike race will return in full force in 2011, according to event director Rainy Kent. The previous sponsors are returning, which is why the city will be able to host the race again, she said. “We’re so fortunate to have Embassy (Development Corporation), Appia (Developments Ltd.) and Palladio (Canada) returning as title sponsors,” Kent said. “Without them, we could never put on this event.” Il Girolino, a smaller version of the race held in conjunction with Hats Off Day in 2009, will not be held this year as it didn’t work well with the crowded family event. “The merchants felt it wasn’t the best fit,” Kent said. Fencing erected in advance of the race impeded foot traffic, she explained. “On a positive note, we couldn’t have had a more successful event,” Kent said, adding it was very popular with residents and she is already fielding calls about the 2011 Giro. 344 for all of 2009, according to a building permit tabulation report presented to city council at Monday night’s meeting. Building projects for the first four months of 2010 are valued at approximately $8.7 million more than all the projects for 2009. But 2009 was a terrible year for the real estate industry, according to Peter
