Burnaby Heights’ Italian bike race will return in full force in 2011, according to event director Rainy Kent.

The previous sponsors are returning, which is why the city will be able to host the race again, she said.

“We’re so fortunate to have Embassy (Development Corporation), Appia (Developments Ltd.) and Palladio (Canada) returning as title sponsors,” Kent said.

“Without them, we could never put on this event.”

Il Girolino, a smaller version of the race held in conjunction with Hats Off Day in 2009, will not be held this year as it didn’t work well with the crowded family event.

“The merchants felt it wasn’t the best fit,” Kent said.

Fencing erected in advance of the race impeded foot traffic, she explained.

“On a positive note, we couldn’t have had a more successful event,” Kent said, adding it was very popular with residents and she is already fielding calls about the 2011 Giro.

The City of Burnaby has received and approved almost twice as many building permits in the last four months than in all of 2009.

The city has approved 561 building permits thus far for 2010, compared with

344 for all of 2009, according to a building permit tabulation report presented to city council at Monday night’s meeting.

Building projects for the first four months of 2010 are valued at approximately $8.7 million more than all the projects for 2009.

But 2009 was a terrible year for the real estate industry, according to Peter

Leaky condo owners get double the tax pain Homeowners will lose PST rebate and get hit with HST – both not in their budget Jennifer Moreau staff reporter

Burnaby homeowners in the midst of a leaky building repair project are about to be hit with an unforeseen tax bill, thanks to the new harmonized sales tax and the cancellation of a PST rebate grant from the Homeowner Protection Office.

The high-rise condo building is at 7288 Acorn Ave., close to HighGate mall on Kingsway. There are 50 units, and the owners have already pitched in roughly $75,000 each for a $3.8-million repair job – some more than others, depending on the size of suites. The 12-month project started last year and is expected to wrap up this October.

“This is a tax ... that we hadn’t budgeted on. We counted on getting the PST rebate, and we’re not going to get it,” said Trudy Lancelyn, president of the strata council.

Lancelyn was expecting a total PST rebate of roughly $100,000 through the Homeowner Protection Office, which has a program to give people PST breaks when they are stuck with leaky building repairs.

But, as stated on the office’s website, the PST relief grant for homeowners with completed building envelope repairs will be terminated, as of June 30, in conjunction with the introduction of the HST. Applications will only be accepted until June 30.

The strata has been paying for repairs along the way, but since the completion date is after June 30, they won’t be eligible to get their PST rebate, even on costs incurred before the implementation of the HST. “We’re not against the HST per se, but it would have been very helpful if they just waived that criteria,” Lancelyn said.

But that’s not all. Because the HST will mean an additional seven per cent tax on many things now PST exempt – labour for example – the strata is estimating another $110,000 in additional costs. In all, the HST and the cancelled rebate will add $210,000 to the project, which translates to $4,200 on average per suite. The strata’s treasurer, David Coomber, said roughly half of the owners initially needed help from the

Homeowner Protection Office to get loans for the repairs.

Lancelyn said they had no idea the HST was on its way when they budgeted for the project. They have a contingency fund for unexpected costs, but the unforeseen tax leaves the homeowners with less money in their pockets at the end of the project.

Lancelyn said they are OK with paying extra when the HST comes in July 1, but they would still like that $100,000 rebate

on repairs they’ve already paid for up until then.

The building’s strata council wrote to Finance Minister Colin Hansen, Housing Minister Rich Coleman, NDP critics Shame Simpson and Bruce Ralston and local MLA Raj Chouhan – of the five, only Chouhan responded.

The NOW contacted the Homeowner Protection Office but didn’t receive a response by deadlines.

Burnaby anti-HST petitions pick up steam

The number of Burnaby residents signing the anti-HST petition is rising, as provincewide signatures hit the 400,000 mark on Monday.

“What is really exciting about this report is the big jump in signatures in both Vancouver and Burnaby this week,” said Chris Delaney, lead organizer for the Fight HST campaign. “We were a little slow getting started in those ridings, but they are catching up quickly, with signature gathering in those regions keeping pace with all other regions now.”

At the beginning of May, Burnaby was last in the province for gathering signatures for the anti-HST petition. Local organizer Janet Routledge said there were some delays getting started but predicted numbers would pick up.

Former premier Bill Vander Zalm is leading the Fight HST campaign. He brought in the petition under the Recall and Initiative Act, which allows voters to challenge laws and remove MLAs from office.

The petition and an attached bill call for an end to deal the provincial and federal

governments made to bring in the HST. For the petition to be successful, canvassers need to collect signatures from 10 per cent of registered voters in each of B.C.’s 85 electoral districts by July 5. So far, they’ve hit the 10 per cent mark in 56 ridings across the province, and they have roughly eight weeks left to go.

The latest numbers, as of May 9, show Burnaby’s four riding are picking up.

Burnaby-Deer Lake has 871 signatures, but they are aiming for 5,106. BurnabyEdmonds now has 1,800, but they want

5,074, and Burnaby-Lougheed has 1,541 but they are striving for 5,279. Burnaby North is the furthest ahead in the city: They’ve collected 2,272 signatures but are aiming for 5,679.

Although canvassers only need 10 per cent of voters to sign in each riding, the campaign’s target is set at 15 per cent, just in case Elections B.C. deems some of the signatures are ineligible. As of May 10, 34 ridings had reached that 15 per cent threshold.

“That (increase) is encouraging,” Simpson said. “It creates jobs, people are back at work, it helps the economy.”

Despite the increase in permit applications, Simpson said there are “some flies in the ointment.”

These include tighter mortgage qualifying rules, rising interest rates, and the implementation of the harmonized sales tax in July.

“The HST, that’ll impact all homes priced above $525,000,” Simpson said, adding that it would most likely affect all new singlefamily home prices in Burnaby.

Residential property sales for Metro Vancouver were at 3,512, making it the fifth highest selling April on record, according to the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver.

New listings for properties in the Metro Vancouver area have increased by 64 per cent compared with last April.

“The number of homes coming on the market has increased significantly in recent months, which is providing a healthy level of choice for those looking to buy during this busy period,” said the board’s president, Jake Moldowan, in a press release.

The benchmark price for residential properties in Metro Vancouver has risen from $499,021 last April to $593,419 this year.

“It was at this time last year when home prices in our region began their recovery from the declines that occurred during the recession period,” Moldowan added.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR MLA’s criticism ‘shameful’

Dear Editor:

It is shameful that a Burnaby MLA would chastise his own municipal government for not supporting a flawed and weak climate initiative (Mayor missed, Letters to the editor, May 8). Mr. Bloy would rather have his city council ignore the inadequacies of the Climate Action Charter and take the small amount of cash offered to the city.

The charter is not legally binding and does not impose any legal obligations on municipalities. It calls for communities to be carbon-neutral by 2012, meaning that municipal governments would probably purchase carbon offsets from local independent power producers and logging companies, among others. However, not all offsets are equal. Some are more effective than others. The best offsets are those

that reward environmental entrepreneurs for taking real risks to protect our environment and offering innovative ideas to reduce our carbon footprint. The worst are those that maintain the status quo. Logging companies and independent power producers are the latter.

Logging companies have been tree planting for decades to replace the forests they cut down. In the future, “biofuels” burning wood will necessitate more reforestation and add to the greenhouse gases.

In short, carbon offsets for reforestation is simply an additional subsidy to an already profitable industry.

Similarly, independent power producers do not represent a greening of the B.C. economy. According to the B.C. Energy Plan, over 92 per cent of the province’s electricity in 2004 was already “green,” as it is generated by water power.

While independent power producers have incurred some significant costs in proposing their projects, the risk has been relatively minimal. The development of these companies has been mandated by law, so it is only a question of which projects are best engineered and how effective they are at lobbying politicians.

Independent power producers simply represent a shift from a socialist economic model that provided affordable power for British Columbians and revenue to the government to a free market model that will result in higher electricity prices and a loss of autonomy over our renewable electricity production.

Nineteen projects have been approved, with an additional 28 projects under review.

Each approval will be followed up with a “power purchase agreement” that will undoubtedly ensure that these companies make a handsome profit at taxpayer expense. Paying an additional premium in the form of carbon offsets to independent power producers or forest companies for generating hydroelectricity and planting trees may make some citizens and politicians feel good, but it will do nothing to curb our emissions of greenhouse gases.

It is time for Mr. Bloy to start representing the people of Burnaby and their concerns rather than attacking their city government for sticking to principles.

Stop the exploitation Dear Editor:

Re: Caregiver rules raise concerns, Burnaby NOW, May 1. Many Canadians think of exploitation and abuse as something that happens in sweatshops of Third World countries. Well, thanks to exploit-

ative migrant worker programs like the live-in caregiver program, employers do not have to go overseas to commit human rights abuses to workers, they can do it right here in Canada.

The official justification for the program is that there are no Canadians to do the job.

This is understandable, because nannies’ wages are low, and who wants to live 24/7 with their employer? Some see the solution with the import of “desperate women” (in the words of nanny agency manager Ed Carmona), with no citizen rights under Canadian law, who are very reluctant to go to the authorities if the terms of employment are violated or they are abused. I met one Filipina nanny who did not get paid for 10 months and did not report it out of fear that the employer would not give them the reference to find another job in Canada.

Shamefully, Canada refuses to sign on to the United Nations Convention on the Protection of Migrant Workers and their Families. This is probably a good thing for the well-heeled in Canada who can afford a nanny (the median family income of employers is $100,000 a year) but not so good for the rest of us. The importation of cheap foreign nannies prevents the well-off from promoting universal access to care for seniors and children.

Because the nannies are not granted citizenship rights for many years, they are separated from their children, pay taxes without representation and are very reluctant to report abuse for fear that it will interfere with their citizenship application. Canadians should be demanding we sign on to the UN convention and allow foreign workers to come here as permanent residents, with their families, and not be required to live with their employer. Anyone good enough to work in Canada should be good enough to enjoy the rights of our citizens. Anything less is exploitative.

Law: Special prosecutors under fire Next session starts May 15th continued from page 7

kind of delayed justice stick out like sore thumbs.

Liberal MLA John Les has been in political limbo for two years now, forced to resign from cabinet after it was revealed he was being investigated over land deals in Chilliwack.

That is an unacceptably long time to essentially leave a public figure twisting in the wind, unsure of his personal future. Surely a special prosecutor can work quicker than that.

The second case of delayed justice is the trial stemming from the raid on the B.C. legislature back in 2003. This has seen three

young political aides having to put their lives and careers on hold, as the special prosecutor has, from time to time, failed to make timely disclosure of evidence to the defence.

So if changes are indeed made to the special prosecutor system, who initiates them? It can’t be the attorney general or the provincial cabinet. Either the Criminal Justice Branch itself implements new guidelines, or perhaps it is time to have a review of the system conducted by an independent party.

Perhaps a legal authority from outside the province, with no ties to any political

party, could be asked to conduct the review. Or the man whose recommendations led to the creation of the system in the first place could be asked to step in.

That would be former provincial Ombudsman Stephen Owen. The fact that he is also a former federal Liberal MP may taint him in the eyes of some, but I think he’d be a credible choice.

In any case, the special prosecutor system is not broken, not by a long shot.

But it may need that tweaking to ensure its credibility survives in the long run.

‘Swarm’ of police was just a film crew at work The scene looked ominous enough, but the only worry for Burnaby residents is when the commotion hits the television or movie screens.

On Saturday morning, in the 3800 block of Hurst Street, just east of the Ocean View Burial Park in South Burnaby, witnesses reported several police cars and a police van surrounding the area. In addition, people were seen cutting down bushes by the cemetery.

But it was all part of filming for a movie or television show, said Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Brenda Gresiuk.

“Our watch commander did receive multiple questions about what was happening there, but to the best of our knowledge, it was just movie or television filming,” said Gresiuk.

The Burnaby NOW also received several queries about what was happening in the area, with one caller saying “there’s quite a swarm of police in the area.”

Gresiuk said movie companies usually only notify the police of their activities if they are doing an explosion or need to close off a main road to facilitate filming. alau@burnabynow.com

Because the matter is before the courts, Turpel-Lafond is not speaking publicly, but she did release the following media statement: “I have applied to the court for an order to compel government compliance with their obligations under the

The government must trust her,” he said. “To have an officer of her stature and that much responsibility, she needs all the tools and resources to do her job. … For government to say she can have some limited access – well, what’s the point of that?”

NOTES FROM CITY HALL Sewer work contract OK’d

The combined sewer separation program contract has been awarded to Siemens Contracting Ltd. for $1.14 million.

Siemens put forward the lowest of seven bids for the project.

Bids were accepted up until April 6 and ranged from $1.14 to $2.3 million.

The city’s director of engineering, Lambert Chu, recommended the contract be awarded to Siemens in a report made to council on Monday night.

The cost of the project is included in the sewer and water utility components of the 2010 provisional financial plan.

Child-care centre gets approval

Reach for the Stars Montessori, a Vancouverbased group of Montessori child-care centres, is coming to Boundary Road, near Laurel and Linwood streets.

The proposed facility is located at 3440 Boundary Rd. The centre would have 45 spots for children in total, with eight spaces for toddlers.

Helen Diogo, founder and administrator of three Reach for the Stars Montessori centres in east Vancouver, put forward the application to rezone the space for the facility.

Fraser Health has already approved the facil-

ity. Council approved the rezoning at Monday night’s council meeting.

The planning and building department will work with Diogo to prepare a development plan to present at a public hearing.

Spring projects

Street light pole and parking meter replacements, and the rehabilitation of the Byrne/Meadow Avenue pump station, were approved at council’s meeting on Monday.

Severely corroded lamp standards around Burnaby will be replaced at a cost of $420,000 to the city. A review was conducted in fall 2009, identifying approximately 1,900 out of a total of 12,057 poles that are deteriorating and require replacement.

The replacement of all 1,900 poles will be phased over the next five to seven years.

Parking meters throughout the city need replacing because of theft and vandalism, according to a report presented to council by the engineering department. There are 1,500 paid parking spots throughout the city, and $40,000 has been allocated to replace meters when necessary.

The Byrne/Meadow Avenue pump station is being assessed and rehabilitated at a cost of $58,000.

The station is a critical component of the drainage system in the Big Bend area.

Giro: Race set to make return continued from page 1

gives organizers the ability to prepare for the larger race next year.

“The big one will return,” Kent said.

Kent is looking for new sponsors to help with the race, and credits the race’s strong volunteer force – the Giro Heroes – with much of the prep work leading up to the event.

A date for the 2011 Giro di Burnaby will not be decided until the winter, as it is a part of B.C. Superweek – a week of cycling events in the Lower Mainland – and that event has not been scheduled for 2011 as of yet.

Superweek takes place from July 9 to 18 this year, with the Tour de Delta and Tour de White Rock.

The Tour de Gastown was also cancelled for 2009 and 2010.

Some changes to the 2011 Giro di Burnaby include setting up at 4 p.m., and starting the race at 6 p.m. instead of 7 p.m.

Riding at dusk “was a safety concern in the past,” Kent said.

The next step is marketing the race, she said.

tourism program about reallocating $22,000 of funding that was set aside for the 2010 Il Girolino race, to be used for marketing materials for the 2011 Giro di Burnaby.

The Phase 1 community tourism program funding is to be used for pre-event marketing. This would include updating the event’s website, producing five promotional online videos, developing a blog page, using social media to promote the event, updating sponsor and community marketing pages on the website, producing a promotional DVD, and creating marketing materials.

The first race was held in 2006. It has been well received in North Burnaby, where there is a strong

Italian cultural base.

The idea of an Italianstyle bike race initially came from Coun. Pietro Calendino.

“The Heights neighbourhood is perfect for riders,” Calendino said. “They just loved our race course.”

The financial climate is still not perfect for securing funding, he said, which makes finding new sponsors difficult.

The primary sponsors of past races have been developers, and large developments have slowed in Burnaby, Calendino explained.

But it is a great event for Burnaby Heights, he added.

“It is exciting to have it in the neighbourhood,” Calendino said.

The 11th annual Blues and Roots Festival will be held at the newly renovated Deer Lake Park on Saturday, Aug. 14, starting at 12:30 p.m. The event is the perfect opportunity to showcase the renovated park, Parent said in a followup interview.

“There is a lot more seating,” she said, adding that drainage and lighting – things concert attendees might not notice, but that help those organizing the festival – have also been improved. “It will be an enhanced experience for visitors.”

Connecting the subatomic dots NOW reporter Jennifer Moreau caught up with SFU physics professor Mike Vetterli. Vetterli and fellow faculty members Dugan O’Neil and Bernd Stelzer are working on ATLAS, a particle physics experiment at the Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, Switzerland. It’s part of the world’s largest physics experiment, where scientists are smashing subatomic particles at record-breaking levels of energy, hoping to shed light on the basic forces that shaped our universe. ATLAS could help us understand the origin of mass, the unification of fundamental forces, extra dimensions and dark matter.

Moreau: Can you introduce yourself?

Vetterli: My name is Mike Vetterli. I’m a professor of physics at SFU, and I have a joint appointment with TRIUMF, Canada’s national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics.

What is the ATLAS project?

The ATLAS project is a large particle physics experiment in Geneva at a laboratory called CERN. The goal of ATLAS is manifold, but basically the grand challenge of particle physics is to understand the structure of matter, the basic components of matter, what makes up our word and how they interact.

ATLAS itself has several goals, but the main goal is to understand what gives subatomic particles mass.

How does the project work?

We collide very high-energy protons together, and we look at what comes out.

By colliding these two subatomic particles at very high energies, you make very highenergy densities, and you can create new particles. One of the things we want to create is a particle called the Higgs particle, which is the thing that people think is what gives subatomic particles mass.

The Higgs particle – is that the Higgs boson?

Yes. What exactly is it?

You can think of it as a field that we all move through, just like when you move through water; it’s harder to move through than when you move through air. So, how you interact with this field will determine how much mass you have. If you don’t interact much with it, then you have a light mass, and if you interact a lot with it, it’s hard for you to move, so you have larger mass. In quantum mechanics, fields can manifest themselves as particles because of the way quantum mechanics works. It’s

If you postulate that there’s this field around, and quantum mechanics tells you it should bubble up as a particle, and that should be the Higgs particle, and that would be the smoking gun of this field. So, that’s what we are looking for.

If no one has ever observed the Higgs boson, how do they know it exists?

It’s a theory model. … We haven’t seen the actual particle yet. In order to do that, we have to go to higher energies than what we’ve made up to now. That’s why we had to build this very big accelerator in Geneva. Hopefully, we’ll have enough energy there … and we’ll find this thing. If we don’t find it, we’ll have to rethink our theories on how to explain all this other data that came before.

What happens if they find it? Is it the missing link?

It’s the last particle postulated in something called the Standard Model. If we find it, and it has the properties that we think it

has, then we will understand basically how nature works at energies that are prevalent in our everyday world. The challenge will be to figure out how nature works after that at higher energies. The chances of us only finding Higgs and nothing else, and that it will explain everything, are pretty small. Even if we find it, and it is what we think it is, we are almost surely going to find something else because we are going into a new energy region and territories.

How are you involved in ATLAS? When we run these experiments we produce an enormous amount of data. In order to be able to analyze it, we’ve set up an international network of large, highperformance computing centres, and one of them is in town here, at TRIUMF (at UBC). I’m the computing coordinator for Canada, making sure that all the computing works.

I heard the Large Hadron Collider could possibly create black holes. Is that true?

Yes, that’s one of the theories, that we

could create so-called mini-black holes.

Your next question is probably: If there’s a black hole, then why can’t it swallow the earth? For one, they are mini black holes, and they are unstable, so they would decay before they would start swallowing up too many things.

When can the public expect to get results from this?

We’ve already published one physics paper. … Who knows when we are going to start seeing things that will surprise us.

Likely, it will take years.

Is there anything in particular you would like to find?

The Higgs particle is sort of the Holy Grail. If we could find the Higgs particle, that would be fantastic. One of the things I’m personally interested in is to see if there are things smaller than quarks.

Burnaby business community connects at trade show

The Burnaby Board of Trade’s annual trade show takes place this Thursday at the Delta Burnaby Hotel, after outgrowing last year’s location.

There were 60 booths last year and more than 700 attendees, according to Rachel Morrogh, communications coordinator for the board.

The show gives Burnaby busi-

nesses the opportunity to see what other companies are out there in the community, she said.

“What we really want is to make sure the business community gets to meet its neighbours,” Morrogh said.

The tradeshow helps businesses without a prominent public profile connect with others in the community, she added.

“It allows companies without a storefront to showcase their business.”

The board of trade hosts the show to showcase its membership. Products and services will be displayed, and business owners can make new contacts and generate sales leads by connecting with other owners at the event.

Suppliers, purchasers, service providers, business owners and working professionals are all encouraged to attend.

Those attending are encouraged to bring business cards, as there will be prize draws.

Sponsors of the event have donated a variety of prizes worth $50 or more.

It’s a time for song, dance and honouring indigenous culture. One of the Lower Mainland’s biggest powwows is happening this weekend in Burnaby, and everyone is invited to attend.

“It’s a great opportunity for people to come out and experience our First Nations culture,” said Dawn Marks, who sits on the powwow organizing committee.

“There are many dancers that come from different areas and backgrounds.

“It’s great to see all the cultures at one time at one event.”

“When I became fascinated with Greek food, I wanted to add my own special flavour to it.”

And for people who love spanakopita – traditionally a baked phyllo filled with spinach and cheese – Chow does it differently, offering the spinach roll at $5.95 that has the spinach and feta wrapped in a spring roll pastry and then deep-fried.

For people looking for traditional Greek fare, Chow doesn’t deviate too much from a typical Greek menu, as he knows that lamb and souvlaki are staples he has to do well.

Perhaps his favourite dish is the kleftiko, the meaty and tender lamb shoulder that he slow roasts and serves with mustard, herbs and a red wine sauce.

“Kleftiko is a more affordable cut than rack of lamb, but you don’t lose any of the flavour,” Chow said. “It’s a great dish for $16.”

In comparison, the rack of lamb goes for $10 more.

The state of the Quebec-Canada relationship isn’t something that weighs heavily on the minds of most Western Canadians these days – and it hasn’t, really, since the 1995 referendum that called the fate of the nation into question.

This is something Bill Devine knows well.

But ask him why he chose to stage a play about that very subject, and he grows passionate.

“Canada is this huge country, so different in our different areas,” he says, noting that the recent Winter Olympics in Vancouver reminded us, yet again, of our vastness – and our oneness – as a nation.

“The topic is well worth investigating, from our perspective.”

The Burnaby resident is the artistic director of Sea Theatre. Its production of Plan B, a Canadian political farce by Michael Healey, opens at Presentation House Theatre in North Vancouver on May 14.

The play won a Dora Mavor Moore Award in Toronto for Best New Play in 2002, and Healey comes with the ultimate Canadian playwright’s pedigree – a Governor General’s Award for The Drawer Boy. That was the winning combination that drew Healey towards Plan B. The play is bilingual – with projected translations provided – so Healey was faced with the challenge of finding a cast Plan B Page 19

that could work in both languages.

In this, he says, he is fortunate to be able to work with top-quality professional actors: His French component comes from France Perras and Jacques Lalonde, while Adam Henderson and Howard Siegel are in the anglophone roles.

The story traces what happens during high-level meetings to negotiate the separation of Quebec from Canada.

But Devine is quick to note that it’s not a play that preaches about politics: it’s a satire, and it traces the relationship between Quebec and Canada through an affair that develops between a woman on the Quebecois negotiating team and a man on the Canadian side.

In the course of the play, the characters – and the audience – discover that, in fact, the U.S. has made deals with both sides.

Through the ensuing developments – in both bedroom and boardroom –the play explores what happens to the QuebecCanada relationship and asks if it can be saved.

“It’s a serious situation, but we’re able to laugh at it as well,” Devine explains.

He’s hoping the production will attract the FrenchCanadian population and, more broadly, anyone interested in the state of Canadian politics.

“It’s a good play for people who are interested in the politics of this country,” he says.

Devine is hoping to see a younger audience drawn towards this modern examination of politics.

“Michael Healey has kind of a cutting-edge reputation as well,” he notes.

Producing this type of theatre – intelligent, modern and often provocative – is what Sea Theatre has had a mission to do since Devine founded it in 1985.

He had first trained to be an actor but notes that, at the time, Vancouver didn’t have much work for actors.

He took off for Toronto for awhile and later moved to London to work.

It was after his return to Canada – settling first in Toronto again and then moving back home to the West Coast – that he decided he would found his own company and stage the type of plays he was interested in seeing.

He has always concentrated on making it an

“actor-based” company, choosing works from both international and Canadian repertoire focused on the development of the actors.

The company stages one major production a year.

It takes so much time to secure funding that any more isn’t practical, Devine

notes, particularly since he still works a day job driving a truck. The actors also offer free readings for the public and, through Presentation House, workshops for high school students.

Devine admits that recent years have been somewhat “nail-biting,”

what with funding cuts making it harder and harder for arts groups to continue operating, but he also says it’s work that’s rewarding and fulfilling.

And, for right now, he has his sights set on that curtain going up on May 14.

Plan B opens Friday, May 14 at 8 p.m. and runs Tuesdays through Saturdays until May 29.

There’s one pay-what-youcan preview on May 13 and one Saturday matinee, at 2 p.m. on May 29.

Tickets are $22/28, and two-for-one on Tuesdays.

have a theory about celebrity relationships.

Of course, celebrity gossip is an industry in itself with tabloids, newspapers, radio and TV shows keeping us up to date with the latest on the greatest.

Who’s in rehab? Who is sleeping with whom?

Who has been pulled over for driving while intoxicated? Who has caused a scene in a club? We seem to be fascinated by the real life private drama of our public figures – musicians, politicians and actors.

They are like the Greek gods: powerful, legendary but fallible and emotional like the rest of us. But celebrity relationships seem more likely than ours to be short-lived, and I wonder if that is because the very famous don’t really know who they are.

When Brad Pitt first met Angelina Jolie, did he see the real person behind the look, the image and the history? When he looks

in the mirror, does he see the image we see in movies and magazines or his true self? Politicians and performers invest a lot in the creation and maintenance of their public image, but beneath the polished masks, they are normal human beings who act and speak in ways that would surprise us. When two famous people meet and fall in love, have they really met the private individuals behind the public masks? Or are they really in love with their personae, their polished public images?

They may be disappointed to discover that they are living with someone quite different than advertised. They may have difficulty relating to one another as regular human beings with excessive wealth and in the public eye. And a celebrity may have difficulty identifying himself or herself beneath the public façade.

But us regular folks can have just as much trouble identifying our true selves.

We, too, wear masks. We wear one at work, another in the public, and another at home. Do we shed our masks when we look in the mirror?

When others first see

you, what do they see?

Your gender and your age. Your height and your build. The colour of your hair, your eyes and your skin. Your ethnicity and your language. Your clothes and your shoes.

People make snap judgments about the inner you based on these outward features. And how others see and categorize you can constrain you. How you see yourself constrains you all the more.

Having shared the intimate secrets of my patients – listening to their dreams and visions, and helping them with their personal struggles, I withhold any judgment based on outward appearances. There is more to us beneath the surface, perhaps more than we have discovered ourselves.

Take a look in the mirror. Who do you see? Do you think the world or you yourself has constrained your potential by limiting you by assumptions and generalizations based on your outward appearance?

Junior Lakers cut T-Men to size Tom Berridge sports editor

The Burnaby Lakers moved to the top of the B.C. Junior Lacrosse League standings following a 10-8 victory over the Nanaimo Timbermen Sunday.

Second-year keeper Brodie MacDonald earned his fourth win of the season, backstopping the victory with 48 saves.

Blake Mattinson, playing in his second game of the season for the Lakers, scored the game-winner in the opening minute of the third period.

Jaxson Lee and Josh Simons both collected a pair of goals for Burnaby, while leading team scorer Mackenzie Davis potted four points, including his sixth marker of the season in a five-goal middle period.

Trailing 4-3 after the opening period, Burnaby pulled even at fives after back-to-back goals from Simons and Simon Fleet in a 30-second span.

Simons, with his second transition counter of the period, Davis and Jordon Jarvis, in the final minute of

the period, completed the comeback for the 4-1 junior Lakers.

“The second period was a turning point for us,” said Lakers head coach Mike Kuppan. “I still think we’re a ways away. We’re still sloppy.”

The good news for Kuppan was getting the W against the full Timbermen lineup.

“That’s their whole team, and we have five (players) coming back. We ran with them. We did OK,” Kuppan added.

On Saturday, the junior Lakers looked shaky at times before nipping the Victoria Shamrocks 11-9 in overtime.

Lee, with his fifth goal of the game, tallied the game-winner in the final minute of play as Burnaby scored three times in a three-minute span late in extra time.

Lee opened the scoring in the fifth minute with his first of two in the period, but Burnaby trailed 4-2 at the break.

Victoria continued to hold a two-goal lead heading into the final frame.

But two goals each from Nick Bilic and Lee, including three in a

row in a 39-second span early in the period, quickly put the visitors back in the lead.

Bilic’s second goal of the game and fifth of the year gave Burnaby a 7-6 advantage.

Victoria forced overtime on backto-back goals midway through the third period, including Ben Stebbins’ game-tying counter.

MacDonald played a strong game again in the Burnaby goal, stopping 44 shots, including four in overtime.

“I think we have a lot more confidence after taking Coquitlam right to Game 7 last year,” said the 6-7 Laker goalie. “Everybody knows we can do it. There’s a lot more confidence than at the beginning of last year.”

MacDonald’s 85.17 save percentage is tops amongst goalies with more than 60 minutes under their belts. And that is just the way the 20-year-old wants it.

“Yeah, I definitely want to stay on top of the league and be No. 1.

Chances are if I’m No. 1, we’ll be No. 1,” MacDonald said.

Burnaby is in Port Coquitlam Friday. The Lakers host Langley on Sunday. Game time is 7 p.m.

Burnaby trio helps Storm club to bronze

The Pacific Storm placed third at the 18-and-under women’s national water polo club championships in Montreal Sunday.

The Storm, including Molly Gritchen, Kyla Yoshioka and Danielle Robinson of Burnaby, defeated CAMO club of Montreal 5-2 in the bronze medal match.

The Storm were beaten 6-3 by eventual champion Calgary Renegades All Blacks 6-3 in a semifinal match on Saturday.

Robinson, a student at York House School, had two goals for the Storm, while Yoshioka added a second fourth-period marker.

Yoshioka was the game’s first star in the Storm’s 76 quarter-final win over Fraser Valley on May 7.

Locals show well in 10K Sun Run

Three Burnaby runners finished amongst the top 30 in this year’s annual Vancouver Sun Run. The run took place on Mother’s Day for the first time in its 26-year history. Former Simon Fraser University runner Richard Mosley was the first local across the finish line, finishing seventh overall in sub30-minute time of 29.54.

Oliver Utting of Burnaby topped the men’s 35-to-39 age division to place 12th overall in a time of 30.51.

Burnaby Central grad and ex-Clan track athlete, Dylan Gant, finished 28th in a 32.42 clocking, fifthbest in the 19-to-24 bracket.

Trevor Feeney placed 58th in the men’s field in a time of 34.18.

Kristina Rody of Burnaby was close behind in a time of 34.40, placing fourth overall among all female runners.

Russell Busche of Burnaby and Brandon Jones of New Westminster placed among the top 100 men with times of 35.26 and 35.54, respectively.

Shannon Elmer of New Westminster finished in a time of 36.55, placing 18th in the women’s category.

Mary Chan, the women’s 45-to-49 group winner, and Darbykai Standrick of

Burnaby finished 36th and 39th, respectively, with sub-40-minute times.

In separate age categories, local runners also fared well.

Nico Giuriato of Burnaby was second in the boys’ under-16 group with a 38.13 clocking. Santiago Ward placed seventh in 39.52.

Mike Elsinga of New Westminster was eighth in the 45-to-49 division, while Jake Madderom came fifth in the 65-to-69 class.

John McDowell finished fourth among 80-to-84year-old men, while Terry Julian of New Westminster and Norman May of Burnaby were third and fifth, respectively, in the 85-to-89 division.

On the women’s side, Susannah Reid was fifth in the 16-to-18 division, while Rainy Kent was sixth in the 50-54 group.

Stephanie Lord was ninth at over-55 and Kristine Lewis and Pat Hargreaves were eighth and ninth, respectively, at over-65.

Lenise Fitzpatrick and Violet Holmes placed third and sixth, respectively, in the over-70 division.

Aura Courtney and Heather McKeown of Burnaby finished third and fifth at over-80.

Senior B Burrards unbeaten in West Coast starts

The Burnaby Burrards improved to 2-0 following an 8-5 win over the Nanaimo Timbermen in West Coast Senior Lacrosse Association action last week.

Rob Brommer topped all scorers with a six-point outing, including a pair of goals.

Kevin Hill stopped 27 shots in goal to backstop the win.

Jonas Lewis chipped in with a goal and three helpers, while Kee Joseph and Matt Demkier added a goal and two assists apiece to the win.

Burnaby’s next game will be held

tonight (Wednesday) at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre. Game time is 8 p.m.

Conference title win

New Westminster’s Kevin Crowley led Stony Brook University to its first America East conference varsity field lacrosse title in eight years Saturday.

The first round draft pick of the Western Lacrosse Association Burnaby Lakers scored three goals to give the sixth-ranked Seawolves an 11-7 victory over University at Albany in the championship conference

title game May 8.

The win gives Stony Brook an automatic berth in the NCAA Division I championships.

Junior Jordan McBride added a pair of markers for Stony Brook, breaking Kevin Pall’s career school record of 133 tallies with his conference-leading 48th goal of the campaign.

Crowley was named to the all-championship team following the tournament.

He led the America East with 71 points, including 46 goals.

Web Awards Gloo Studios has won the ‘Best Animation’ category at the Webby Awards.

The Burnaby-based company supplied the animation for the College Humor short film, ‘Pixar Into Parody,’ which required the building of over 100 3-D characters and objects from scratch.

The Webby Awards is the leading international award that honours excellence on the web and is often referred to as the ‘Oscars of the Internet’.

Over 2.6 million people have viewed Gloo Studio’s winning video on YouTube alone.

Mike Ritchie, Director of Visual FX at Gloo, spent over a month crafting the animation around the College Humor script and over two weeks rendering.

Business Awards As the nomination deadline for the 2010 Burnaby Business Excellence Awards fast approaches, the Burnaby Board of Trade caught up with a handful of last year’s winners to see how they have maintained their pursuit of business excellence.

Since winning the Community Spirit Award last year, Costco Willingdon has continued to demonstrate outstanding community support.

In fact, the Burnaby wholesaler has actually increased donations and commitments this year,

which includes their current campaigning efforts to support the Children’s Hospital Foundation, and their recent involvement in the Heart & Stroke Big Bike event. Costco staff are also planning on participating at the Heights Merchant Association’s Hats Off Day on June 5.

“We are constantly challenging our staff to come up with new ways to get involved in the community,” said Jim Tsamis, Costco Willingdon’s Marketing Manager, who is proud of the 85 per cent staff participation rate

for community events.

“Providing support for your local community is a demonstration of business excellence,” he added.

Hemlock Printers has continued on a path of excellence since winning the BBOT’s Environmental Sustainability Award last year.

The Burnaby-based printing company has recently been named the most environmentally progressive printer in Canada at Environmental Printing Awards in Toronto, claiming this title five years in a row.

Earlier in the year, Hemlock and the Society of Graphic Designers announced the creation of a design scholarship, which they are offering to two students who demonstrate the use of design to benefit their community, effect action, or promote change.

Burnaby’s first employers’ forum on diversity allowed 50 local businesses to connect with over 150 internationally trained professionals.

The Burnaby Board of Trade, in partnership with the Burnaby Intercultural Planning Table (BIPT), organized a pioneering event last month, to help break down the barriers that stand in the way of internationally trained professionals (ITPs) entering the workforce.

This concept has never been attempted in Burnaby. Through open dialogue and round-table discussion, businesses learned about the advantages of developing and maintaining workplace diversity, which includes improved access to new workers, the ability to expand into new markets, increased productivity and greater innovation.

Through face-to-face interaction in a pressure-free environment, highly-skilled newcomers were able to have frank discussions with local employers about the barriers they face in their attempts to enter the Canadian workforce.

Employers in attendance included IBM, Electronic Arts, Sorin Group, HSBC, Mammoth Studios, Investors Group, Business in Vancouver and Pacific Blue Cross.

Among the internationally trained professionals, 53 different countries were identified as places of origin. Architects, electrical engineers, computer scientists, accountants, physicians, healthcare professionals and business managers were among the list of occupations previously held by the participating newcomers.

Keynote speaker, Ian J. Cook, Director of Research and Learning at the BC Human Resources Management Association, described the business imperative for embracing diversity.

“Your business is like an ecosystem. A more diverse ecosystem is more resilient and creative to the shocks that hit it. With the economic shifts underway in the world, the pace of change and the rapid increase in competition from everywhere, a business that is consciously diverse and has harnessed this diversity will be the only way to thrive,” said Cook.

“This forum wasn’t a job fair,” said

Darlene Gering, President & CEO of the Burnaby Board of Trade. “As a leader in the business community, we are spearheading this issue to help build a welcoming and inclusive workplace culture in Burnaby and New Westminster. Employers need to acknowledge the strong business case for hiring with diversity in mind. This is especially significant in our local community, since 56 per cent of Burnaby’s population speaks English as a second language,” Gering concluded.

Andrew Henriquez, an IT professional who attended the event, was overwhelmingly pleased with the forum.

“This event has convinced me to stay in British Columbia and continue to look for Information Technology work here, rather than move to Toronto,” he said.

This event was the third component of an 18-month project called Breaking Down the Barriers that involves 6 employer tours (18 business tour-stops), two major forums, over 350 skilled newcomers and 5 sectors (including healthcare, engineering, finance & accounting, business management

New BBOT Member, L2 Accent Reduction Centre, is offering an innovative ‘accent reduction’ service that reflects the multicultural composition of B.C.’s labour market.

The company says that even with relevant qualifications and a good English vocabulary, it is often a person’s accent that prevents them from securing a job.

“Unfortunately the most qualified candidates don’t always get the job,” says Jennifer Madigan, Director of Learning at L2 Accent Reduction Centre. “Despite eagerness on the part of B.C. employers to integrate people trained from outside of Canada, accents can often deter them from following through. This is especially evident for jobs that require strong communications skills such as sales and customer service.”

L2 Accent Reduction Centre provides a range of classes for anyone who wants to improve their enunciation. The programs are tailored towards individuals, business people and medical professionals who want to benefit from accent reduction as well as writing and speaking training.

The Centre has just launched an online course where students benefit from high quality audio and video instruction through online voice recognition software that gives immediate feedback.

MLA Kathy Corrigan has shown her support for the BBOT’s Early Childhood Development resolution at a recent legislative sitting.

Corrigan, who served nine years on the Burnaby School Board, referenced the resolution when questioning Mary Polak, Minister for Children and Family Development, on the status of the Government’s commitment to reduce the provincial rate of early vulnerability.

Corrigan highlighted the fact that one in three Burnaby children is vulnerable as they enter kindergarten.

Corrigan drew Polak’s attention to the BBOT resolution which was passed by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce (CCC) in 2009.

“They submitted a resolution asking the federal government to fund and assist the development of a provincially delivered early childhood development program to increase Canada's long-term productivity by investing in a bettereducated, more highly skilled workforce,” she said.

“The importance of early childhood development certainly continues to be one of the Burnaby Board of Trade's key priorities in 2010.”

Minister Polak said that she welcomed the initiative taken by the Burnaby Board of Trade to affect social and economic change at the municipal level.

“I had the privilege of meeting with the Burnaby Board of Trade and discussing the resolution that they put forward.

I made it clear to them that I was encouraged by the fact that so many civic leaders are now addressing the issues of childhood vulnerability and are taking on the matter of the socioeconomic realties of their constituents,” she said.

Minister Polak stated that the Government will be spending $151 million over the next two years to implement full time kindergarten starting this September.

The Opposition has also prioritized daycare and announced earlier this year that a national-care programme would be put in place if they win the next election.

The BBOT has welcomed both commitments and said that it will continue to drive change through the CCC’s policy platform.

CAPS WESTWOOD CYCLE ORGANIZES AN ANNUAL FUNDRAISING EVENT TO SUPPORT LOCAL HOSPITAL

A local bike shop raising money for Eagle Ridge Hospital has secured the support of major performance apparel manufacturer Sugoi, thanks to the Burnaby Board of Trade.

Sugoi has donated prizes to the Wheel to Heal ride on May 16, which is being organized by BBOT Member Caps Westwood Cycle.

The BBOT facilitated the connection after identifying the community initiative as one that would fit with Sugoi’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) objectives.

This is one of many examples of how Members can utilize the vast BBOT network of businesses.

Sugoi is one of a number of sponsors that have committed merchandise and organizational expertise to ensure the

event is a success. The ride aims to raise between $80,000 and $100,000 this year.

Any money raised will go towards the purchase of medical equipment such as stretchers and lifts for the hospital.
