Budget is too rich, says Evans Former city councillor is ‘convinced the city of Burnaby is overstaffed’ Janaya Fuller-Evans staff reporter
The city’s proposed property tax increase of 3.95 per cent is unreasonable, according to former TEAM councillor Garth Evans. “I always voted against (Mayor Derek) Corrigan’s budgets when I was on council,” he said, adding he thinks cuts need to be made to bring the tax down. He didn’t specify what should be cut but said if he was mayor he would have the director of finance prepare a comprehensive financial assessment. Evans did suggest staff might be one place where cuts could be made. “I am convinced the City of Burnaby is overstaffed,” he said. The municipality’s priority is protecting unions, he added, including ensuring contractors pay their workers union-level wages, even if the company is non-union. Staff recently negotiated a new contract, and the Burnaby firefighters and RCMP have seen increases in salary levels and wages through contract negotiations this year. This is while “lots of other people are taking pay cuts and losing jobs,” he said. “We have overpriced government in Burnaby,” he said, adding there’s not enough done with the money that is brought in. “The city’s record respecting homelessness and low-income housing is a disgrace,” Evans said. He pointed out that even though Mayor Page 3

“He was very sick. By the time we got to see him at Christmas, he was almost bedridden,” she says. “It was hard. He couldn’t get out, he couldn’t drive anymore.” The ailing man was living in poverty and couldn’t even leave home to get groceries to feed himself. Through the hamper program, church members got connected to the senior through the bureau. They found out what he preferred to eat for the holidays and then did all the shopping and presented
the goods before Christmas. Miyanaga remembers meeting the man, who despite everything, kept his countenance. “He was very kind. He did his best to be cheerful, and I was amazed at how brave he was,” Miyanaga says. “These people are in need, but they are amazing,” Deer Lake United Church often helps the bureau by supplying families with food and toys for Christmas, but over the past three years, the members have gotten involved with the seniors’ hampers, a Seniors Page 4

housing is a provincial responsibility, other cities such as Coquitlam and Vancouver have added homeless shelters. Evans said the city’s record of being debt-free isn’t necessarily something to be proud of, either, as there are borrowing programs with good incentives that could expand the work the city does. Evans suggested the city would do best with a budget that included a property tax freeze and no major service cuts, such as the one Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is proposing. Burnaby’s property taxes could increase by 3.95 per cent again next year, according to the city’s provisional financial plan for 2011. The downturn in the economy, as well as contractual obligations, were mentioned as reasons for the increase in the report, which was presented at council on Monday night. At Monday night’s meeting, Mayor Derek Corrigan said a matter brought forward by a delegation to the meeting, regarding artificial turf field user fees, brings attention to budgetary issues. “It is always interesting when there’s debate about something like user fees, to have the harsh reality of the city budget stare you in the face,” he said. “It is a balancing act.” Coun. Pietro Calendino called the proposed property tax “a modest increase,” while also adding that it was more than the region’s rate of inflation. Coun. Colleen Jordan said she was afraid at this time last year that services would have to be cut in Burnaby. But taxes from new developments this year have helped balance the budget, she added. The plan includes an operating budget of $355.355 million. Planned capital expenses, at $152.519 million, include projects such as the Eastburn Recreation Centre and finishing the Riverway golf course clubhouse, Fire Station No. 1, widening the road at Marine Way and North Fraser Way, and upgrading the water and sewer mains. The report specifically refers to cost increases above the rate of inflation as a reason for the tax increase. Higher costs include wage and salary agreements, such as those negotiated with the RCMP in 2010, and increased utility and refuse disposal rates from Metro Vancouver, according to the plan. 6

Signing off: City councillor Pietro Calendino and Burnaby-Douglas MP Bill Siksay on election night in 2006. Siksay has just announced he’s leaving politics after 25 years.
MP Bill Siksay calls it a day Jennifer Moreau staff reporter
After a quarter of a century in politics, Bill Siksay has decided to hang up his hat. “It’s been 25 years for me,” he said. “It just feels like time to make a change.” Siksay, the MP for Burnaby-Douglas, made the announcement he was leaving politics on Wednesday, Dec. 16. Siksay is the New Democrat critic for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and transsexual (GLBTT) issues. He will stay on till the next election, which could be as early as spring, but he won’t run again. All the various motions and bills he has floating in parliament will die on paper with the next election, but it’s his transgendered rights bill that he thinks will live on. The bill, which would prohibit discrimination based on gender identity and gender expression in the Human Rights Act and the Canada Criminal Code, has already
made it through two of three readings and has support from the majority of the House of Commons. If it doesn’t get passed before the next election, Siksay is confident it will be picked up again after he’s gone, hopefully as a government bill, which has an easier time making it through the various stages than a private member’s bill. As Siksay pointed out, it’s the first time ever that the rights of transsexual and transgendered people have been debated in the House of Commons. While Siksay’s not the only openly gay MP right now, he was the first to already be out before he was elected. And even though he’s leaving, Siksay is sure there will be other New Democrats sticking up for gay and trans rights, especially since the NDP is the only party with an actual critic to deal with GLBTT issues. “I know that commitment will continue, and I’m very confident there will be someone else in the NDP,” he said.

Siksay has been involved in politics most of his life. He was prime minister of student parliament in high school and stayed active throughout university. In 1986, he started working as an assistant to former MP Svend Robinson, Canada’s first openly gay MP, who represented Burnaby for about 25 years. Siksay looks back on Robinson’s coming out moment as one of the highlights of his own political career. “That was a really important moment in terms of the history of the GLBTT community in Canada, and it was a really important moment in Canadian parliamentary history as well,” he said. Robinson fell from political grace after he stole a ring in 2004. Siksay stepped in as the Burnaby-Douglas candidate that year, won and was re-elected in 2006 and 2008. Over the years, Siksay has also done

Seniors: Hampers for Christmas continued from page 1
relatively new endeavour the bureau has taken on. Stephen D’Souza, executive director for Burnaby Community Connections, explains why they branched out from helping low-income families to seniors. “Isolation is a big problem. A lot of seniors we are seeing in the program, they don’t have the network around them, they don’t go to community centre, they don’t know anyone,” he says. “If they are leaving their house, they are going to buy groceries with what money they have.” Sometimes, money is so tight, they may have to choose between buying food or medication, he adds. To qualify for the hamper program, seniors have to be at least 65, and Burnaby Community Connections checks their financial backgrounds to verify they are in need. D’Souza says the program focuses on seniors who have no connections to community resources. A senior, like the gentleman helped through Miyanaga’s church, could be introduced to Burnaby Community Connections through the hamper program and then connected to other forms
of help – Meals on Wheels, the South Burnaby Neighbourhood House or Voices of Burnaby Seniors, for instance. “We are really targeting those people who have no family, or they don’t have any connection to their family, who don’t have connections to the community,” D’Souza says. “We’re trying to bring them back into the community, let them know there’s someone that cares about them and hopefully give them that foot forward to go out there and get the services they need.” As for the reaction from seniors who receive the hampers, D’Souza says they are often overwhelmed because they simply haven’t seen anyone for a long time. “I think seniors are a growing issue in our community. We have more and more people becoming seniors, some with networks and some without,” D’Souza says. “We really need to start focusing on the needs of our seniors to help them into the future and help them today.” D’Souza has about 200 seniors signed up for hampers this year, and as always, the bureau is in need of more donations. NOTES FROM CITY HALL Summer fun planned Plans for the Giro di Burnaby, and 2011 summer concerts, were approved at Monday night’s council meeting. The Giro di Burnaby is slated to return to Burnaby on July 14, 2011. The bike race through the North Burnaby neighbourhood, along Hastings Street, was cancelled for the previous two years, due to lack of funding. Renewed title sponsorships from Embassy Development, Appia Development and Palladio Jewelers mean the race is back until at least
2013, according to a report from the parks, recreation and cultural services department. Council approved plans to close Hastings Street, between Boundary Road and Willingdon Avenue, on July 14 between 4 and 10 p.m. The department also requested approval for up to 10 outdoor concerts at Deer Lake Park over the summer of 2011 – between May 1 and Sept. 20 – and up to 10 special events at Swangard Stadium, between May 1 and Oct. 31, 2011.

could be all aglow in the near future. Funding for lighting on the bridge was approved at the Dec. 6 council meeting. The bridge is one of three awardwinning bridges built in the city in the past five years, according to a report from the city’s finance committee. The design includes white metal halide lights along the arch of the bridge, and blue LED lights underneath the bridge. The project is expected to cost $350,000 and is included in the 2010 capital plan. – Janaya Fuller-Evans

work around peace, disarmament, security certificates, human rights and immigration. On the question of Canada’s role in Afghanistan, Siksay has always called for an end to the war and for the troops to come home, but that issue was the most difficult to grapple with. “I don’t think there’s a more serious moment for a member of Parliament than sending Canadians to war, and I found those moments very personally heavy,” he said. “I don’t know of a more difficult decision for a
country to make.” As for who will run for Burnaby-Douglas on behalf of the NDP, Siksay isn’t sure, as the news is still fresh for most people. “I know we’ll have people that are interested,” he said. Siksay doesn’t know what’s next for him, but he did say he is not interested in the provincial NDP leadership position now that Carole James is stepping down. “I don’t know what I want to be when I grow up,” he said, jokingly. Siksay, now 55, says leaving behind a life of
politics isn’t easy. “It’s hard. It’s been really hard to get into politics,” he said. “(But) it’s really hard to get out too, because there are so many reasons for staying.” Vancouver MP Libby Davies has worked closely with Siksay over the years, even before he was an MP. “He’s one of the best you’ll ever find – hardworking, modest and principled,” she said. “Bill will be sorely missed in the NDP, the community and Parliament. It’s not an easy decision to make, but true to who Bill is – he always gives careful thought and
knows what he’s doing.” Ken Coolen, president of the Vancouver Pride Society, was sad to hear the news. “He’s done a ton of work for the LGBT community, especially with bill C-389,” he said, referring to the trans rights bill. “He’s courageously led that initiative, and I just hope that the NDP will continue along with that. “People who are aware of what Bill has done will be equally disappointed to know he’s not going to stay on, but you can’t fault a person for having a life,” he added.

be about $80 per month, and to be fair, the government does offer waivers to seniors facing serious financial hardships, and all MSP fees are paid for. But seniors in care homes have no way to increase their income. Health services, such as dental care, foot care and eyeglasses, and necessary basic care, such as hair cuts, all cost extra. These are not frills for the elderly. And now that care homes are strapped for cash, even special dinners – such as pizza night – and outings are charged as
additional costs. It just seems petty to ding seniors who have no way to refuse to pay – or power to protest. We’d rather see a hike in booze taxes, cigarette taxes, taxes on luxury items, than squeezing precious dollars out of old folks trapped in care homes. When you’re in “God’s waiting room,” as seniors’ care homes are often called, you should at least be able to put your feet up and not have to choose between pizza night or a hair cut.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Blaming the turtles? Really?
Honesty is much appreciated
Dear Editor:
Dear Editor:
Re: Turtles to blame for overrun, Burnaby NOW, Dec. 15. I thought I’d heard it all when it came to politicians blaming others rather than themselves for wasting taxpayers’ money. But lo and behold they have a new group to blame, the turtles of Burnaby Lake! Didn’t anyone at Burnaby City Hall and the B.C. Ministry of the Environment know that there were turtles living in Burnaby Lake before they went ahead with the dredging? I guess I’ll just have to blame the turtles for the increase in my upcoming taxes. Unbelievable!
I want to tell you about a truly honest Burnaby business. Early in November, my daughter attended camp with her school and brought home a visitor: bedbugs! While we caught the infestation early, it still cost us for the pest removal, a new mattress and boxspring, mattress and boxspring protectors, and drycleaning, a little over $1,500. All of our clothes had to be put in the dryer for 20 minutes on high or sent to the cleaners. Most of our clothes did go into the dryer, but there were some that had to be dry-cleaned. We took those to Kensington Cleaners and Laundry in the Kensington Plaza.

You can imagine how stressed I was over these bedbugs – so stressed, I forgot to check the pockets of my husband’s suit. I have to commend the cleaners for their honesty. Shortly after I had dropped off the suit, they called to tell us that we had left the money in the pocket. I was, and still am, very grateful.

Re: Complaints fall on deaf ears, Letters to the editor, Burnaby NOW, Dec. 11. I would like to assure Mr. O’Neill that the progress report on the Hughes review issued by the Representative for Children and Youth is one that we take very seriously. The report indicates more than 80 per cent of the overall recommendations are completed, underway or no longer applicable. However, there are 11 outstanding recommendations about which the representative and the ministry have a different viewpoint on the level of progress. The ministry’s assessment is that all recommendations have been fully implemented
Re: Spare us the emotional plea, Letters to the editor, Burnaby NOW, Dec. 11. The point Rafe Mair was trying to make (We must fight for the environment, In My Opinion, Burnaby NOW, Dec. 4) was apparently lost on some readers. It’s abundantly clear that our historical pursuit of short-term monetary gain from our natural resources will have long-term, detrimental consequences. Just Google “fracking” if you want to learn about yet another emerging disaster being pursued in the name of profit for a very few. This isn’t our planet – we’re borrowing it from our children and grandchildren. It’s time we all started acting accordingly. Peter Cech, Burnaby

of Assange on a platter, the Anonymous community decided to get some revenge on his behalf. They started Operation Payback. Bye-bye, Visa and Mastercard sites. Which leads us to a bizarre situation. A diffuse group with no leaders is waging a (somewhat successful) campaign to harm major corporate titans. They’re in open opposition to the U.S. government. They’re probably impossible to stop.
This is unprecedented. Anonymous has no home base. They have no known leaders, and in fact can change leaders at a moment’s notice. If you managed to arrest a dozen people who’ve been the key organizers of Operation Payback (just trying to identify them should be fun) they’ll just find a dozen more. At this point, I suspect that the sympathy WikiLeaks has accumulated will actually draw more people into Anonymous
than any crackdown would scare off. People who’ve never heard of 4chan are involved by now. And they’re learning techniques of Internet disruption that were pioneered by teenaged hackers. The techniques of online insurgency are being spread like seeds on the wind. They’ll take root in places we can’t even imagine. Fifteen-year-old Miguel Ramos brought out the Burnaby Fire Department and TV crews to his school earlier this month. The Grade 10 St. Thomas More student caused quite the ruckus, but it was all for the benefit of others – Ramos held a toy drive at his school. It all started with a simple life skills course assignment: Go change the world and make a difference. Ramos turned that assignment into a massive fundraiser, called Toys4Kids, which has garnered 1,000 toys and $2,000 so far for the Burnaby Salvation Army to distribute. Teacher Dave Ruzycki said he’s surprised at how far Ramos has managed to go with his fundraiser. “He’s got a really good pitch,” Ruzycki said. “He’s not shy. I’m the sponsor teacher, I’m basically there to support him, but it’s his show.” “I’ve had people come up and think I’m Miguel Ramos. They can’t believe he’s a 15-year-old boy,” he added. Ruzycki said there are a number of other students at the school that have also

Children’s Hospital. As for Ramos, his fundraising mission still isn’t over. There is another toy
drive set for Tuesday at the Pinetree Save-on Foods in Coquitlam on Dec. 21, from 6 to 9 a.m. Those who drop off toys or money can enjoy hot beverages and goodies. Ramos said Citytv, which covered the Burnaby Fire Department’s toy drop-off at St. Thomas More earlier this month, will be on hand on Tuesday. For Ramos, the reason to focus his energy on toys is
simple. “It’s hard to imagine a child waking up Christmas morning without finding anything under the tree,” Ramos said. Ramos wanted it noted that the Salvation Army is expecting a shortfall of toys this year. For those who can’t drop by Save-onFoods, Ramos suggests they drop off a toy at their local Salvation Army outlet.

RCMP cracking down on prostitution in city Ten johns arrested in a project targeting the sex trade along the Kingsway corridor Alfie Lau
staff reporter
The Burnaby RCMP announced the recent arrest of two female sex trade workers and 10 johns in the second phase of a crime reduction project targeting the sex trade. The arrests, which include a recommendation of charges for communication for the purpose of prostitution, come on the heels of the first phase of the crackdown, which led to 20 arrests in June. In the June arrests, 12 female sex trade workers and eight johns were arrested.
The 32 total arrests were initiated by the Burnaby RCMP’s prolific offender suppression team and targeted prostitution along the Kingsway corridor between Boundary Road and Tenth Avenue. “The Burnaby RCMP is very much alive to the community’s concerns regarding the sex trade and the illicit activities associated with it,” Burnaby’s top cop, Chief Supt. Rick Taylor, said in a press release. “We feel this project sends a clear message that behaviour such as this will not be tolerated within the City of Burnaby. In particular, it should send a distinct message to the sex trade consumer that the continued sexual exploitation of female sex trade workers will remain a priority for our detachment and the City of Burnaby and will result in further criminal investigations.”

Christmas comes early for local kids Cop Shop gives specially chosen kids a chance to shop with a police officer – and spend $200 in gift cards Alfie Lau
staff reporter
For 11-year-old Charlie He, Christmas came on Dec. 15. The Cameron Elementary Grade 6 student was one of 15 lucky kids selected for Cop Shop at Lougheed Town Centre – Brentwood Town Centre also held a concurrent event. Charlie was paired with Burnaby RCMP Const. Ryan Begley to spend $200 in gift cards donated by the mall for Cop Shop. Now in its third year, Cop Shop is all about community engagement and giving back to the community. “This is a really fun event and one our officers are very happy to be a part of,” said Burnaby’s top cop, Chief Supt. Rick Taylor. “For us, it’s the third year we’ve been involved, and what I find most inspiring is that you’ll see these kids go shopping not just for themselves, but for their family, their friends and for others. … You see the sense of giving, and it’s hard not to feel good about this.” The youngsters are chosen by their schools, with the criteria for selection running the gamut from kids in need to kids who’ve shown excellence in academics, citizenship or sportsmanship. When Charlie got the call from Cameron good quality to have as a police officer,” principal Hal Wall, he didn’t know what to said Biring. Charlie is more deliberate in his choice, expect. “I got called to the principal’s office, and opting for a used $8.99 Need For Speed, I thought I was in trouble,” said Charlie. Begley goes one better, finding a CFL ball that comes complete with a pump and a kicking tee. “You can use the pump for the basketball as well,” said Begley. While Charlie’s in line paying for his balls and chocolate, Biring and Carmine are just finished buying a pair of shoes. “I’m very impressed with his budgeting skills,” said Biring. “He’s got a very good head on his shoulders.” Charlie’s spent a little more than half of his gift card, and another big chunk is spent at Cole’s, where he buys two SAS Survival Guides. “The thing with Charlie is he knows exactly what he’s looking for,” said Begley. “He doesn’t hesitate when he finds the right thing.” Charlie does take a cursory look into H & M for a white dress shirt and black pants – he has an upcoming school recital – but he
can’t find the right size and style. By now, almost two hours have passed and instead of making a rash purchase, Charlie decides to call it a day with more than $50 left on his card. “I can save it for another day,” he said. “I’ve got everything I’ve looked for so far.” Watching the kids shop and have fun is rewarding for Lougheed Town Centre’s marketing director Beverly Diallo. “This is one of the best events we put on each year and the best during the Christmas season,” said Diallo. “It’s so great to see the kids having such a great time and enjoying themselves and getting what they want for Christmas.” As the kids finish their shopping, they all gather in the mall’s food court to share their shopping stories and enjoy some post-shopping refreshments. “A great way to spend an afternoon,” said Begley, who does have to return to his regular beat in the Metrotown area. “My first time involved with this, and I’m having just a great time.”

To avoid becoming a target for identity theft, here are some simple habits that can help. Identity theft has become one of the fastest growing crimes in Canada and the United States. However, there are a few simple things that can be done to reduce your risk of becoming a victim to this crime. The following few tips will prove helpful in protecting yourself. 1) Review your credit card and bank statements regularly and thoroughly for any suspicious activity. 2) Regularly review your credit reports; even as often as quarterly. There are credit sites that offer this service without charge. 3) Do not respond to unsolicited e-mails or phone calls asking for your social insurance number, billing information, login or any other personal information. 4) If you suspect any suspicious activity regarding your personal financial information, immediately report it to the appropriate bank, credit card company, credit bureau, law enforcement and PhoneBusters. If it truly is a case of identity theft, the sooner you report it the less damage there will be to your finances and credit rating. 5) Keep in a safe place, a list of your cards, account numbers, expiration dates and toll-free customer service numbers. Photocopy both sides of your cards, driver’s licence, etc. This will save you considerable time should you need to contact the credit card company or other institutions.
6) Buy a paper shredder. Shred all documentation that identifies your personal information; particularly letters and offers of credit card companies that you do not plan to apply for. 7) Keep your computer’s virus detection software current. Install and keep current your spyware software program. Use and become familiar with the security features of your web browser; ideally it should encrypt or scramble information you send over the Internet. For peace of mind, contact us to learn the value of purchasing identity theft insurance.

Jamaica, an exotic travel destination Continued from PAGE B1 considering lots of travel advertisements don't provide that figure.) For couples wanting a romantic getaway, there are a number of reasonable cruise packages to Mexico. Cassidy cites a seven-night Mexican cruise from Los Angeles, with stops in ports like Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlan for about $2,000 all in. A Mexican cruise promises golden sunsets and relaxing beaches, and, again, the new year prices won't leave travellers with empty pockets. "January/February are some of the best deals," Cassidy says, though between the two months January is generally less expensive. There are also great prices for travel to the Caribbean – Cuba, Dominican Republic and Jamaica, though travellers may want to plan for a longer getaway to the Atlantic destinations. There are still great deals to be had – some as low as $1,000 per person. Another nice romantic travel option is a getaway to Jamaica, which is becoming increasingly popular for British Columbians. It's only over the last two
Airfares
years that direct flights have travelled from Vancouver to Jamaica. Previously, those enroute to the tropical country had to stop over in Toronto. With direct service, travel time has been cut by about three hours. A new year trip to Jamaica would cost about $1,300 for air and accommodations per person. "It's a bit more exotic," Cassidy says about Jamaica. "I've been there a couple of times myself, and I think it's great." For a casual getaway with friends, Cassidy says Las Vegas is always a good bet. The prices are super reasonable and even if you don't gamble, there's a million things to do – shopping, shows, people watching, tours – seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Five-night packages cost about $450 per person, though the temperature isn't typically too smoking hot in the winter (expect temperatures in the mid-to-high teens), the weather is typically dry on the action-packed getaway. There are also many other travel destinations, such as Central America and the Pacific Islands, that are great getaways, but they require a little more money and time. Still, no matter where you want to go, January is the best time to find hot deals. For more information on these or any other travel deals, call Cassidy and her team at Flight Centre Highgate Village 604-528-6209.

Need a break from the hustle and bustle of Christmas preparations? Take a time-out on Saturday and stop in to see Recompose, an exhibition of work by artists from the Korean-Canadian Artist Association. It’s on at the Deer Lake Gallery until Dec. 22, and the gallery is open today (Saturday) from noon till 4 p.m. for those who want to check it out. Artists included in the show are Chang Chungmim, Kim Heejeong, Kim Hwasoo, Park Jihyang, Lee Jongjin, Kim Jongkook, Hwang Kyungah, Yang Miah, Choi Moonsoon, An Myungjun, Lee Seonok, Cho Sungah, Jang Suim, Whang Taikkoo, Ko Yohan and Kwan S. Yu. Their work is in a variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture and textiles. The arts council website notes that the exhibition deliberately juxtaposes different artistic styles in order to inspire creativity and new perspectives – for instance, a traditional Korean brush painting might be placed next to a classical oil painting. Deer Lake Gallery is open Mondays to Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. Call 604-298-7322 or check out www.burnaby artscouncil.org for more information about the show. jmaclellan@burnabynow.com

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t necessarily need a mountain to have a good time on a snowboard. Just ask the organizers of the upcoming Snowdeo, a two-day snowboard rail jam competition taking place at Swangard Stadium Feb. 18 and 19 that will be the largest of its kind ever held in the Lower Mainland. One year after several Canadian snowboarders became household names after winning medals at the 2010 Olympics, a different crop of young athletes will be busting out their best moves on a one-ofa-kind course that will incorporate urban features such as handrails, ledges, boxes,
wall rides and other features not made of snow. With Cypress Mountain not having anything planned to commemorate the oneyear anniversary of the Games, Burnaby decided to pick up the slack. “For us, it is about celebrating the legacy of Olympics and also about trying to do something really, really cool,” said Tourism Burnaby executive director Matthew Coyne. “Hopefully it will become something people can look forward to at this time year after year.” Although meteorologists are calling for heavy snow this winter, there is always a possibility Swangard Stadium won’t be capped with the white stuff in February, but Coyne said this isn’t a concern.

Snowdeo: Burnaby event celebrates anniversary of Olympics continued from page 22
“We’ve partnered with Mount Seymour to bring in real snow for the event. We’ve got a great production team behind us handling the course, and it’ll be good to go no matter what,” said Coyne. Snowdeo is the brainchild of Brand.Live, an event production company whose recent shin-
digs include official CFL Grey Cup after-parties, the LIVE at Squamish music festival and Sarah McLachlan’s Summer Sessions at Ambleside. “It’s just a great opportunity for Burnaby what with Vancouver not really doing anything special for the anniversary of the Olympics, which is really quite odd,” said
Brand.Live creative director Allan Regan. “Hopefully it’ll bring a bunch of things together. It’ll bring snowboards off the mountain and into an urban environment; it’ll make use of Swangard, which is a great facility in a great location; and also bring some great exposure for Burnaby not only as a place willing to back these sorts
of events but also the people of Burnaby.” Confirmed athletes so far include pro riders such as Craig Beaulieu, Jesmond Dubeau, Nate Butcher and Logan Short. Advance tickets are available for $39.95 at www.snowdeo.ca, $49.95 after Dec. 25. Single-day tickets are $29.95. TELUS AUTHORIZED DEALERS Vancouver

MOTORING Toyota Yaris is a star among subcompacts David Chao and Bob McHugh NOW contributors
I
t can be tough at the top. Not too long after Toyota was declared the biggest car company in the world, the global car market went in the dumper. In recent months and closer to home, Toyota, the darling of every auto consumer reliability and quality survey, has been hit with a barrage of safety recalls and grilled by governments for its conduct. If this has rocked the trust that the Canadian consumer has in the Toyota brand, so far it hasn’t shown up in the most accurate of all quality measurements– resale value. In the most recent Canadian Black Book annual Retained Value Awards, Toyota and Lexus models took top spot in seven of 17 categories. The winner in the subcompact segment, the Toyota Yaris, is the lowest-priced new Toyota that you can buy and has a start price of just $13,995 for a three-door hatchback version call the Yaris CE. Moving up the model line, there’s a five-door hatchback version of Yaris that comes in both LE and RS trim levels and has a start price of $14,905. In addition, there’s also a four-door sedan edition of the Yaris with a start price of $14,990. My test Yaris was a four-door sedan with an automatic transmission ($1,000), and it also came with a convenience package ($1,600) that includes air conditioning,
power windows, power mirrors, power door locks, keyless entry and bunch of other stuff. It also bumped the full price to $17,350. Something to keep in mind before you get carried away with Yaris options is that its larger sibling, the Toyota Corolla, has a start price of just $15,460. Then again, while the Corolla offers more car for the money, perhaps you want less car and the best possible fuel economy. When it comes to fuel economy Yaris is the best of the best. A combined city/highway fuel efficiency rating of just 6.3L/100 km for a Yaris with a manual transmission and 6.3L/100 km with an automatic has allowed it claim the federal ecoENERGY award in the subcompact class for five years straight.
The Looks
Photo contributed/burnaby now
A stretched body with a trunk gives the Yaris sedan a more conservative look than the Yaris hatchback. Although they look the same from a front view, the overall design doesn’t have the same perkiness as the hatchback and the longer wheelbase also gives it a wider turn circle. Of course it has redeeming qualities on the inside; more passenger and cargo space.
The Inside
The stretched outer dimensions of the sedan give its rear-seat occupants considerably more leg room. While there’s a little less headroom, most users won’t even
Winner: The Toyota Yaris is a continuing star in the subcompact market. notice a difference, as the well-designed passenger cabin still has a roomy feel. The driver seating position is upright and the centre-dash position instrument panel allows better forward sightlines.
The Drive
An urban warrior, the Yaris excels as a city runabout thanks to its agile handling, light but quick steering and park-friendly size. While its engine horsepower numbers (106) may not sound very exciting, Yaris not a heavy vehicle so there’s
enough power and then some. Yaris also performs surprisingly well out on the highway and despite its size does not feel out of place in traffic at elevated cruising speeds. Cabin noise, however, is not a Yaris strong point.
The Score
The Toyota Yaris is an inexpensive car to buy, it’s cheap to run, super reliable, nimble to drive, easy to park and it’s likely to have a high resale value – a perfect commuter car.

Player with heart 2010’s top athlete Injury didn’t stop him from leading team at Mainlands Tom Berridge sports editor
Learning came on many levels for this year’s 2010 Burnaby NOW high school male athlete of the year. Burnaby Mountain Secondary grad Mathew Uduboker is currently playing varsity men’s basketball at Capilano University after a successful high school career with the Lions. The three-time Mountain athlete of the year helped the school team win a juvenile Vancouver and District hoop title in his first year of high school ball. Later, Uduboker was named MVP on the senior boys’ basketball team despite being just a Grade 10 junior. But the best to come would also prove to be among the most disappointing memories for the athletic 5-11 shooting guard. Uduboker grew up playing many sports, but settled on basketball when he moved to Burnaby to attend Mountain. However in his final year, Uduboker went out for volleyball and together with Brendan Yao, made a strong showing at the provincial qualifier. “I wanted to experience a different sport,” said Uduboker. “I found in this sport that (Yao) was really passionate. I think I took his strength and passion, and applied it to my game. He actually taught me a lot.” Through basketball, the Kenyan-born Uduboker made it on the B.C. under15 basketball team that went to the national championships. He practised on weekends at high performance camps and took advantage of open practices with the Simon Fraser University varsity team with then head coach Scott Clark. “I’m not scared at all with the challenge,” he said. “ I strive to be better and better. And better he became. As a Grade 10 junior,

Athlete of the year: Mathew Uduboker played through pain in the failed attempt to help put the Burnaby Mountain Lions boys’ basketball team through to the provincial championships. What he learned was a greater life lesson.
UdubokerhelpedMountain earn a spot in the Mainland zone qualifier for three consecutive seasons. But Mountain never got closer than they did last year. Hobbled by a serious ankle sprain just before the LowerMainlandAAAboys’ championships, Uduboker still managed to lead the unranked Lions to within a game of the school’s first provincial appearance at the Agrodome. “What we learned on the basketball court was what we could apply to be successful in life,” said Uduboker. “I don’t think there will be another time when I will connect with someone teaching me basketball and life lessons.” Those lessons were passed on by volunteer coaches Ryan Brandlmayr and Paul Fox, who took over
the team when Uduboker first entered high school. Reinjuring his ankle in a do-or-die matchup against No. 5-ranked Kitsilano, Uduboker scored 16 points, including six in the final quarter, to advance Mountain to a final game against Burnaby South. “I tried to forget about the ankle and just play, but it wasn’t easy at all,” remembered Uduboker. “I thought I had let my team down.” But in reality, Uduboker had given Mountain much more. Courted with his twin brother Mark at an early age to play basketball with the older boys, the two began a practice of early morning training that would shape Mathew’s self discipline and dedication to a goal in future years. When the core group of
Lions’ players graduated after Uduboker’s Grade 11 season, a largely new team struggled. “We realized it was not just letting our coaches down not coming out to the early morning practices. We realized we were letting each other down. That last game touched everybody. “I think it was building up from Grade 8 with our coaches telling us over and over again practising and all the little things we were going to be doing along the way will come to the surface in the finals. “I think it was the trust our coaches supplied us with. … I think what Ryan and Paul were coaching was more life lessons. They taught us discipline, working towards goals and being able to see a bigger picture than what was
present. I think in the five years I learned what they were telling us that what we learned on the basketball court was what we could apply to be successful in life.” It’s just that kind of understanding that separates the already gifted athlete from a potentially great one.

Teen karter gets Skip Barber ride Tom Berridge
sports editor
Burnaby’s Remo Ruscitti will be getting a ride at the Skip Barber nationals afterall. The 16-year-old Notre Dame Regional School student was initially denied a scholarship at the Skip Barber Karting Scholarship Shootout at Laguna Seca earlier this month despite turning in the fastest time among the more than 40 drivers taking part. Remo, who recently placed sixth overall in the highly competitive senior class at the U.S.A. SuperNationals karting championships in Las Vegas, turned heads at the shootout. The talented teen raced to the front of the pack on the winding 3.6 kilometre road course in his first-ever competition behind the wheel of a Formula 2000 open-wheel race car. “The big talk (at the shootout) was who was this Remo kid. They didn’t expect him to be at the top of the sheet,” said father
Giovanni Ruscitti. Six scholarships were handed out at the end of the weekend of racing, including two full seasons and one half season on the Skip Barber national race circuit. Remo was not among the initial winners owing to his not previously qualifying at the regional or national level last year. Nevertheless, Giovanni has come up with the necessary sponsorship that will allow Remo to contest a full season of racing at the Skip Barber nationals in 2011, beginning in March at the 12 hours of Sebring. Remo will race at the six other Skip Barber national venues next year, including as a support race at two Grand Am Rolex series sports car events, where Italian Motors karting mentor Michael Valiante will be driving a Daytona Prototype Ford in the Rolex Series for Michael Shanks Racing. Remo was also guaranteed a ride in England at the Formula Ford festival to be held in September.

Premier women stay put in second place The Burnaby Girls Canadians finished the first half of the Metro Women’s soccer season with a 2-0 victory over North Coquitlam Sunday. The win puts the second-year Canadians solidly in second place in the premier division standings with a 7-1-2 record. Burnaby’s only loss of the season so far was a 2-1 defeat by seven-time defending B.C. champion Surrey United. United currently sits on top of the standings with a 9-0-0 record. A solid improvement over last season is Burnaby’s play on defence. In their first 10 games this year, the Canadians have allowed a league-best five goals to date. The Canadians will lose the services of Kylla Sjoman. The former Jazz youth player and Arizona State University grad signed a pro contract with the Doncaster Rovers Belles of the new English super league.
The Burnaby Selects headed into the Christmas break on a winning footing. The Division 1 under18 team blanked the Victoria Capitals 3-0 with Jordan Campbell recording his fourth shutout of the season. Gilbert Kyne, Chris Diabikulu and Lucas Stawarski contributed a goal apiece to the win. The Div. 2 u-18 team stretched its current unbeaten streak to seven games following a 4-2 win over the Vancouver Selects. Markjiian Kostjuk and K.D. Konneh led the way with two goals apiece. The u-16s were back in second place in Div. 1 with
a 7-0 walloping against North Fraser. JustinDhaliwalgarnered a hat trick, while Matthew Shannik, Nicholas PinedaGraham and defenders Jeffrey Ramen and Adriano Clemente pocketed single markers. Cody Recksky and Simrat Dhaliwal shared the shutout for Burnaby. The Div. 2 u-16s also beat a North Fraser team 4-1. The u-14 Royals padded their lead atop the Div. 1 standings with a 2-0 victory over Victoria. Cristian Nichele and Joel Padmore got the Burnaby goals, while Trevor Hughes got the win in goal.
Rebel misses junior team cut Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was one of the final cuts following Canada’s national junior hockey team selection camp in Toronto Tuesday. The 17-year-old Red Deer Rebels centre garnered a pair of assists in Team Red’s two intra-squad wins over Team White. Canada will play three pre-competition games in Ontario prior to the world junior championship in Buffalo, New York, beginning on Boxing Day. The first is on Dec. 20 against Switzerland. Canada will also play Sweden on Dec. 21 and Finland on Dec. 23. The national junior team has medalled in 12 straight world junior championships, including gold from 2005 to 2009.

Young Giants add depth to top team Tom Berridge sports editor
The Northwest Giants got a bit more breathing room atop the B.C. major midget hockey league standings with a weekend sweep of the fifth-place South Island Thunderbirds. The Giants opened with a 6-2 win over the T-Birds last Saturday before sending the Victoria-area team packing with a 5-2 victory Sunday. Jackson Houck, one of six 15year-olds on the Giants roster, had a solid weekend, potting two goals in each of the Giants’ wins.
Defenceman Cam Marks, also 15, garnered three assists in the 6-2 win to tie Houck for third in team scoring, both with 23 total points. Burnaby 15-year-old D-man Joseph Carvalho had a pair of helpers in the win Saturday. Sam Reinhart, the youngest of all the Giants’ 15-year-olds, was also very productive, posting a sevenpoint weekend, including two goals in the opening game. Reinhart is currently second overall in B.C. league scoring with 19 goals and 29 assists. Leading all scorers is Giants forward Alex Kerfoot. Kerfoot scored
his league-best 24th goal of the season Saturday. He upped his total assists to 40 with four helpers against the T-Birds on Sunday. Kerfoot leads all scorers with 64 total points. “The depth of your team is the key to winning in this league and we have both size and speed,” said Giants head coach Todd Harkins. The Giants finish off the December schedule with a pair of games this weekend against Northeast Chiefs at the Cam Neely Arena in Maple Ridge on Saturday and Sunday. The Giants will take part at the 33rd annual Mac’s tournament in Calgary from Dec. 26 to Jan. 1.
Rejoice in the miracle of His birth this holiday, and let the spirit of the holiday season fill your heart and home with peace, love and joy.
Brent Pierce earned himself a berth into the Curling B.C. provincials, winning the B event at the Coastal men’s playdowns at the Golden Ears Curling Club Sunday. The Pierce rink, including third Paul Cseke, second Jay Wakefield and lead John Cullen, stumbled in the early going, losing out in the A event to Royal City clubmate Bryan Miki 6-1 in a quarter-final match. Relegated to the B event, Pierce then won five straight matches, including a 9-3 upset over Miki in the provincial berth qualifying final. Pierce also knocked off Greg McAulay, who he shared a world championship title with in 2000, winning 5-3 in 10 ends. Pierce then doubled clubmate and former junior men’s champion Steve Kopf 9-5 before meeting Miki in the B final. The Miki rink of third Tyler Klitch, second Jay Batch and lead Chad Hoffman also lost in the final of the A event by a score of 7-5 to Sean Geall. Miki finished with a 3-2 record. The men’s provincial curling championships will be held in Vernon Feb. 7 to 13.

Job Search at Christmas
The Christmas Holidays are upon us, and for those who are unemployed and looking for work it`s a stressful time. Here are my tips for surviving, and perhaps enjoying, the Christmas season. Gregg Taylor 1) Do not stop looking for work yet – there are still a few work days left before Christmas and if an employer has an opening, they may want to hire before Christmas so they don`t have to worry about it in the New Year. 2) Take this week to create a job search plan: update your resume, create a couple of new targeted cover letters for specific jobs, or write down the names and numbers of people you should follow-up with or companies and sectors to target. Do this now so that you can start quickly after the holiday break, and so that when friends and family ask you “did you find work yet?” you can confidently say “not yet but I have a plan for the New Year!” to reassure both them and you… 3) With Christmas falling on a Saturday, the holiday break is just one week. If you need the rest, take the week off and get ready to roll on January 3rd. If the pressure is on to find work as soon as possible, then book time on December 28th and 29th to review job and company sites for opportunities, and make any calls. This is a great option to keep your energy moving, while still enjoying two ‘long weekends’. Either way, block off days during the holidays where you’re not allowed to talk or stress about your job search. Worrying on days you can’t do anything anyways is wasted energy, plus you won’t benefit from the rest you’ll need to re-energize for the New Year. If you feel like you’ve ‘hit a wall’ in your job or career search, why not consider accessing career advice and help in the New Year. Call our office to find out about our career services.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: New projects and relationships will tend to go in circles – forever. So stay with the ongoing, finish up things that have sucked your energy for too long. Something from the past – a foreign contact, a legal, cultural or educational matter, a travel opportunity, perhaps a loved one, a wedding or divorce plan – returns now. You might as well tackle this, or more importantly, tackle the flaw that is preventing it from working. Intimacy, sex, investment and finances are mildly blessed all month: you could gain from another’s assets. Bosses, VIPs start to examine your performance. Taurus April 20-May 20: Don’t start new relationships or projects before Dec. 30. Stick with the ongoing, or reprise past involvements and opportunities. Chase money Sunday/Monday, but DON’T buy important items, especially televisions, computers, etc. A former financial opportunity might reappear, but its initial flaw has not disappeared, so stay out. Love exists, your spouse shows affection, others treat you well. Be wary of legal hassles and international travel: avoid them all month. Paperwork, talk and errands are lucky Wednesday. Settle down Thursday/Friday. Romance, beauty, pleasure come Saturday! Gemini May 21-June 20: Start nothing new, especially in contracts, agreements, marriage, partnerships, relocation, andpublicdealings.Something or someone from the past might appear in these zones: it’s probably more trouble than good. You might grow indecisive about a link. If you look deeply, you’ll see that your indecision is justified. Promise nothing, sign nothing. A month of mystery begins. Your energy perks up Sunday/Monday. Money and possessions meet barriers Tuesday, good luck Wednesday. Travel, communications go well Thursday/Friday. Home, family, security bless you Saturday.
Cancer June 21-July 22: Avoid all new starts, especially in work and health zones. An ongoing “condition” in one of these might reach a climax Monday/Tuesday – after this, the atmosphere changes: fresh horizons, fresh new people and opportunities (and challenges and competitors) arrive. Still, start nothing new yourself, before Dec. 30. Lie low, rest, contemplate and be charitable Sunday/Monday. (Being charitable when you’re “down” ensures a turn of luck later.) Practise safety. Your energy surges back midweek – Wednesday holds a lucky surprise, wise love! Chase money Thursday/Friday. Leo July 23-Aug. 22: Start no important projects, buy nothing significant, before Dec. 30. An old flame might appear this week or next, but it’s almost too late, sort of “life’s afterthought.” Your home continues to be sweet, affectionate. The end of this month and early January will favour re-decorating or purchasing property. “Vaguely” schedule that now, put aside the time. Happiness and social delights visit Sunday/ Monday. You might receive a loving message. A prospective relationship offers good romance, bad marriage. Leave commitment decisions for 2011. A month of work and health issues begins Tuesday. Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Start nothing new before Dec. 30, especially in real estate, domestic, childoriented and security arenas. A former opportunity might return in one of these zones now or next week. Your career, duties owed to higher-ups, and your reputation demand attention Sunday/Monday – erratic relationships might threaten your progress or bring a climax. Tuesday begins a month of romance, creative successes and speculative “wins!” Optimism, social delights fill Tuesday/Wednesday: welcome a fine relationship Wednesday. Retreat Thursday/Friday. Your charisma attracts “deep stuff” Saturday.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Don’t start new projects or relationships before Dec. 30. You might hear/ read a significant message Sunday. Gentle love and understanding fill Sunday/Monday – but Monday holds a couple of surprises, or stress that could affect your health briefly. This stress/health link has been around for seven years. It will end by March 2011. Gastro-intestinal irritations will ebb. The last year’s quiet cloud over your career will also end by March. A “domestic month” begins Tuesday. Your career/job meets luck Wednesday. Optimism, happiness visit Thursday/Friday! Retreat Saturday. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Avoid new starts before Dec. 30. Mysteries arise Sunday/Monday – good mysteries Sunday, leading to rewarding research, or sharing of intimacies, secrets. But take care Monday: don’t invest, borrow, or risk a romantic situation by being too “investigative.” Tuesday begins a month of details, errands, communications, paperwork and travel – be alert in all these, as mistakes are rife until late December. Wisdom, gentle love flow midweek, but are only lucky Wednesday, not Tuesday. Ambition, Thursday/Friday. Happiness, optimism, social joys arrive Saturday! A new life looms! Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Your energy remains high, but shy away from big new starts before Dec. 30. You’ll be indecisive until then. A voice from the past might speak Sunday/Monday, or you can be reminded of old relationships, perhaps of old ambitions this week and next. Tuesday begins a month of money, possessions, memory and sensuality. Midweek brings mysteries, subconscious urgings, changes, investments, large finances and intimate bonds. These are lucky Wednesday, not Tuesday. Wisdom, understanding, gentle love and international themes bless you Thursday/Friday. Your prestige rises Saturday.
www.adamlloyd.ca • Re/Max Advantage
Dec. 19 - Dec. 25 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Start nothing before Dec. 30. Nostalgia about a more secure time fills this week and next – or you face unfinished obligations, probably involving the government, institutions or disadvantaged people. You could find “lost” receipts, documents that will prove valuable in future – save them. Chores and health issues fill Sunday (good) and Monday (difficult). Relationships irk you Tuesday, but flow with pleasant, happy luck Wednesday. Your energy and charisma surge upward now through January! Life’s depths “surface” Thursday/Friday: research, don’t commit. Gentle love Saturday. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Avoid big new projects or relationships before Dec. 30. A former “light lover” or happy friend might return now to late month. Sunday/Monday are romantic, creative and pleasurefilled, but right after this you begin a month of quietude, moderate withdrawal, lowered energy and charisma. (Even Monday, though romantic, hits the turbulence of a “phase end.”) Tackle chores Tuesday (cautiously) and Wednesday (success, even money luck). Relationships confront you Thursday/Friday: all’s well, even a bit romantic. Pursue a mystery Saturday – a “gift” has good future implications. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Don’t start anything new before Dec. 30. A month of pressures and hard work ends Tuesday; four weeks of social delights, optimism, flirtations and happiness begin! But an incomplete career project overhangs this week and next – as long as it’s nothing new, try to finish it up now. Or, a former career role or employment opportunity might return, especially Thursday/Friday: sure, take it. Earlier, rest up, be domestic, Sunday/ Monday. Romance, creativity and pleasure meet barriers Tuesday, success and luck Wednesday. Exciting meetings portend future joys Saturday! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014
