Thumbs up! Burnaby’s television station, Global BC, was inducted into the Burnaby Business Excellence Awards Hall of Fame on Thursday. Brett Manlove, vicepresident and general manager of B.C. broadcast operations, accepted the honour on behalf of the 50year-old television station. Board of Trade president and CEO Darlene Gering and Mayor Derek Corrigan presented the award to Manlove. The station was inducted because of its success as a Burnaby-based business, but also for its work in the community, including the Variety Show of Hearts Telethon fundraiser.

Thanksgiving in Canada is a holiday tradition based on celebrating the bounty of food at the end of harvest season. For many people struggling to get by in these tough economic times, it may not seem like there is an awful lot to be thankful for these days. Thankfully there are always people in the

community who want to make sure nobody will be going hungry over the holiday. “We have three turkeys in the 20-pound range and we’ll be serving them with all the trimmings,” said Susan Sinclair of the West Burnaby United Church of the free feast planned for Tuesday starting at noon at their church at 6050 Sussex Ave. She said the church isn’t planning for more people attending than they normally see for their annual Thanksgiving, which is usually 100 to 140 or so people. “If we run out of food, we run out of food. We’re just going by what we normally do and we also run these on Easter and Christmas.”

For those closer to the New West border, the Union Gospel Mission at 658 Clarkson St. will also be offering turkey dinners for up to 400 people on Monday beginning at noon. This will be good news for people who might otherwise be facing the holiday without the prospect of a hearty feast. According to the Burnaby Task Force on Homelessness, the number of people dealing with homelessness in Burnaby has more than doubled in the past three years, with an estimated 250 without a roof over their heads. Many more are simply struggling to get by and more people than ever are relying on social

service agencies to meet basic needs A recent survey of Salvation Army staff from across the country found that demand for food programs, including food banks, meal programs and street ministry units, are on the rise. More than three-quarters of all respondents indicated that requests for food service increased this year while, to make things worse, food donations in most areas either remained the same or decreased in 2010. eporter Alfie Lau, the Burnaby NOW’s crime reporter, sat down with Chief Superintendent Rick Taylor recently to find out what he thinks of his detachment’s past and future. ◆ Rick Taylor may be just a little past the halfway point in his five-year strategic plan for the Burnaby RCMP but he believes he’s 80 per cent complete on all his major goals. “I think we’re ahead of schedule,” said the chief superintendent who took over Burnaby’s top cop spot in 2007. “I’m pretty happy that we went live with our new website (this summer). It took time but that was one of the last must-do items on my list. “The rest is all internal, putting together reports and making sure that the systems we’ve put in are

continually changing as we head into the future.” Taylor couldn’t help but reminisce about his first cellphone. “It was 1992 and what they gave me was like a brick,” he said. “Before then, we were all on pager but when the cellphone came in, that really changed a lot of things.” Look at an RCMP cruiser today and you’ll find

that officers have a mobile work station that allows them to be connected to the most current information. “I can see the day when officers won’t be using their hands (on computers) at all,” said Taylor. “Everything will be voice activated, there will be more scanning technology and you may even see a completely paperless way of doing things.”

And it’s these changes that lead Taylor to believe that the Burnaby RCMP has to stay on top of cutting-edge technology. “I think that for us to deliver the quality service that the city is paying for and that citizens expect, we need to be doing everything we can from a technology standpoint,” said Taylor. As important as tech-

nology is to Taylor, don’t think that he doesn’t know the value of good old-fashioned police work. “Where I see the benefit of technology is it frees up the time of our officers,” said Taylor. “It gets our officers out of their cars and back into the neighbourhoods, talking to people and giving the citizens an idea of what we’re doing.” Taylor Page 4

The Ukrainian Canadian Civil Liberties Association has launched a postcard campaign to pressure the government to deport Mikhail Lennikov, a Burnaby resident and former KGB agent who has been in church sanctuary for more than a year. In recent weeks, the association has been distributing postcards, which read “No KGB in Canada,” to the public and mailing them to politicians, the RCMP, the Canadian Security Intelligence Service and the Canadian Border Services Agency. 6

I think we can always try and communicate better.” As for an assessment of how he’s done his job, Taylor is also frank. “I have to be trying to do better each day,” he said. “That’s why I’m always asking our officers what I should be doing to help them do their jobs better. ... Communication goes both ways and I have to listen. ... One thing I have tried to do better is to get out from behind my desk. “In my job, it’s pretty easy to just sit behind my desk and communicate from there but I find that by getting out, even if it’s just in the office, I learn about what’s happening on the front lines.”

So why is this veteran officer of the notorious Soviet secret police, the KGB, still here?” The Canadian government wants to send Lennikov back to Russia because he worked for the KGB for five years in the ‘80s. Canadian immigration law states members of an organization that spied on a democratic government are not allowed to stay in the country unless the public safety minister deems they are not detrimental to national security. Lennikov first came to Canada in 1997 on a student visa. He took cover in Vancouver’s First Lutheran Church on June 2, 2009, just one day before he was scheduled to be deported. While Lennikov and his supporters say he is not a security threat and should be allowed to stay, the government has not budged on its position that he’s inadmissible. Lennikov has exhausted all legal appeals and is still facing deportation. Luciuk, who is also a former member of the federal Immigration and Refugee Board, is questioning why Lennikov is still here. “I think they should go in there and remove him and send him back to Vladivostock. If his wife and his kid want to join him, great,” he said. For Luciuk, the push to deport Lennikov is not a personal attack, it’s a principled matter of upholding the law. “The law is very clear: Any person involved with the KGB is inadmissible,” he said. “I’m sure (Lennikov) is a nice guy. … This has nothing to do

The law is clear,” he said. The federal government’s position is the same: “The immigration and refugee board and the courts have determined that Mr. Lennikov is not admissible to Canada under our laws. The removal of admissible individuals is key to maintaining the integrity of the immigration program and to

ensuring fairness of those who come to this country lawfully.” Luciuk said the postcards were part of a “national campaign intended to remind to government of Canada to uphold the laws of the land.” “This is as much a grassroots campaign as the campaign to allow Mr. Lennikov to stay in Canada,” he said. It’s fitting that World Homeless Day is being marked on Oct. 10, to remind all of us of the enormous needs that exist around us. All next week, the Burnaby Task Force on Homelessness is holding events to mark Homelessness Action Week. Take the time to get involved. Learn more about the issues – then reach into your pocket to help. Homelessness and hunger are everyone’s problem, and we all need to be part of the solution.

ontrary to the office supplies commercial saying Labour Day is the most wonderful time of the year – for parents with schoolchildren at least – the best time of year for sports fans is October. Every major sport is either in full swing or in training camp and we’re not just talking North America. In North America, the NFL is into its second quarter of action, the baseball playoffs are going all day, the NHL season is kicking off and NBA training camps, including a Phoenix SunsToronto Raptors exhibition game in Vancouver, are in full swing. On the other side of the pond, the NHL opening games in Finland and the Czech Republic took place Thursday morning. And from European football to Formula One auto racing and the just completed Ryder Cup, there’s no other way to put it: It’s a sports fan’s dream time of year. Add in the fact that the plethora of sports-only television stations is expanding at a mile a minute – Sportsnet One is on

free preview until Oct. 31, and TSN2 is going gangbusters – and sports fans should really have no reason to complain. Well, here’s one disgruntled sports fan. Last month, the New Westminster Salmonbellies played the Mann Cup in Peterborough. The local cable carrier, Cogeco, was involved with producing the games for the Ontario audience, but all us Westerners got was a webcast of the game. The good folks at the River’s Reach pub in New Westminster got the webcasts going on their big screens – lots of wire and lots of duct tape did the job – and it was a pretty rocking place to be, even though the Salmonbellies lost. It was pretty weird watching a game with no replays, no score bug in the top left hand corner and action that would freeze suddenly because of a slow computer connection. Meanwhile, TSN, TSN2, Sportsnet One, Sportsnet West, Sportsnet Pacific, Sportsnet Ontario, The Score, the NHL Network, the NFL Network, Speed TV, the Fight Network and probably a couple other networks I’ve forgotten were showing a full complement of mixed martial arts, poker, sports movies, darts, thumb wrestling and tiddlywinks. How can it be that Canada’s

Re: Rule by mob isn’t democracy, In My Opinion, Keith Baldrey, Burnaby NOW, Sept. 29 As per your request – “explain to me again why New Democrats have aligned themselves with Fight HST?”, the NDP are elected as Official Opposition in B.C. and fundamentally disagree with the tax shift resulting from the HST. From Day 1, they have opposed this tax in the legislature and throughout the course of this B.C. Liberal tax fiasco. Quite simply, the NDP are doing what they were elected to do. debacle. Misleading voters pre-election 2009 regarding the HST introduction along with their phony deficit numbers in what might be called a double fudge-it budget was, after all, their deed. Delaying the HST referendum for another year serves only the B.C. Liberals, not democracy, not the public and not business. Appointing themselves to solely “design” their own referendum questionnaire is yet another self-serving gesture on their part. Only fully indoctrinated Liberal supporters would view these two manoeuvres as anything other than a game of political chess. Your mentioning of the NDP in the same breath as a fringe “neo Nazi holocaust denier” subtly alludes to a connection and begs the question – does such utterance find a political reporter venturing into the realm of political tactician? Taylor Park Elementary is getting a new addition that will house 11 classrooms and accommodate 625 students in grades 1 to 7 and 100 students in full-day kindergarten. Taylor Park was built six years ago and has had growing student numbers, bucking the provincewide trend of declining enrolment. “We are really growing,” said Taylor Park principal Sharon Chamberlain. The provincial government has

a plan to phase in full-day kindergarten by starting with half of B.C schools this year and the other half next year. Chamberlain said Taylor Park is now at capacity and enrolment is projected to grow – that’s why there was no room for full-day kindergarten this year and they needed the addition. The Liberals already announced this summer that there would be eight new classrooms at Taylor Park, but there are actually 11 in total because the school district is paying for three. There will be three rooms for kin-

dergarten, while the other eight are for students in grades 1 to 7. The addition will cost $4.4 million, with the province paying $3.3 and the school district pitching in $1.1 million. Construction should start in January and wrap up by September 2011. Liberal MLA Harry Bloy welcomed the news. “This addition will help the Burnaby school district to offer fullday kindergarten, a program we feel very strongly about,” he said in a media release.

Taking action to combat homelessness

Homelessness Action Week kicks off Sunday Janaya Fuller-Evans

Starting Sunday, the Burnaby Task Force on Homelessness is holding events throughout the city for Homelessness Action Week. The week is organized by Metro Vancouver’s regional steering committee, with the task force handling activities and events in Burnaby. It all starts on the first annual World Homeless Day, Oct. 10. “The purpose is to provide access for people to services it can be difficult to receive,” said Wanda Mulholland, founding member of the task force. “We also celebrate that we’re building a caring community here.” A major part of the week is the Burnaby Homeless Connect on Thursday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Southside Community Church. The event includes a pancake breakfast, a blood pressure clinic, a foot care clinic and eye care exams. A dentist will be on hand, as will nurses and nurse practitioners. Makeovers, haircuts, free clothing, care kits and personal toiletry items will also be provided. A learning table, games, draws, entertainment, and a barbecue lunch are also planned. The event is co-sponsored by the Progressive Housing Society, which is also sending out its mobile outreach van to Lougheed SkyTrain station on Wednesday, Oct. 13. The society is set to provide food and clothing for homeless people at the station from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The week includes

Thanksgiving meals as well – a Salvation Army soup and sandwich night at Southside Community Church, 7135 Walker Ave., on Monday at 8 p.m. As well, there is a Thanksgiving lunch for up to 100 people, which will include clothing distribution from Progressive, at West Burnaby United Church, at 6050 Sussex Ave. Those interested in attending should line up at 11 a.m. for tickets. The first lunch sitting is at noon, and the second is at 12:30 p.m. Another highlight of the week is the free showing of the documentary, Poor No More, on Sunday, Oct. 10 The movie is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the New Life Community Church, 8765 Government St. While the subject is distressing – poverty – the movie does provide hope, she said. “It gives people ideas for possibilities for change.” NDP MPs Bill Siksay, Burnaby-Douglas, and Peter Julian, Burnaby-New Westminster, are co-sponsoring the showing. Siksay, who was part of the task force from the beginning, said in a phone interview that the issue is an important one for him. “It’s something I feel very, very strongly about,” he said. He was the federal NDP housing spokesperson for eight months and said all the reports he received from communities across Canada indicated a national affordable housing strategy was essential. Julian agreed that housing is essential. “We really have to work to end homelessness in Canada,” he said in a phone interview. “We all have a responsibility to work together to end this crisis.”

to find adequate housing, and families struggle to put nutritious food on the table. The low minimum wage also affects post-secondary students, the letter added. The letter also asked that a mechanism be put in place to provide regular increases in the future. Corrigan has mentioned the need for a minimum wage increase in past interviews. “We’re putting a much higher priority on raising the minimum wage,” Corrigan

said in an interview with the NOW in April. Last week, Nova Scotia raised its minimum wage to $9.65 an hour. The closest minimum wage to B.C.’s is Alberta’s, at $8.80 per hour, and the Yukon’s at $8.93. All other provinces and territories’ minimum wages are between $9 and $10.25. The British Columbia Federation of Labour, backed by the mayors’ letter, put forward the $10 minimum wage request.

Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan wants the provincial government to increase the province’s minimum wage to $10 an hour. He was one of 21 mayors to sign a letter to Premier Gordon Campbell regarding the raise. “Every day we see the pressures the minimum wage freeze brings to lowwage workers in our communities and to our communities as a whole,” Corrigan said in a press release. Mayors from 21 communities all signed the open letter asking for an increase from the current minimum wage of $8 per hour, and also asked for the elimination of the $6 per hour training wage. “It has been more than eight years since the last increase to British Columbia’s minimum wage,” the letter stated. “In that time, B.C. has gone from having the country’s highest minimum wage to Canada’s lowest.” The letter pointed out the employees who are paid minimum wage struggle

Hazel May hopes to help Burnabyites discover their own personal style and, in the process, recognize their own value. “The objective is not to tell them you need to lose 20 pounds to look good,” she says. “(My) motto is make the person the best they can be.” May, who lives in the Forest Grove neighbourhood, is a professional style coach and launched her own business, Know Your Style, in July. She got her certification through the Styling Coach Institute in London, England, after an 18-month course, in

February. The most important things to keep in mind when planning a wardrobe are body shape, eye and hair colour, and skin tone, she says. People often don’t see themselves as others do, and only notice their flaws when they look in the mirror, May adds. But she hopes to help them build their confidence, and know themselves better. “People want to know what works for them,” she says. She helps clients declutter their wardrobes – getting rid of what doesn’t work, which is the first step – and add key pieces through shopping trips, she says. She has just finished working with her

first client, an 18-year-old man who needed a wardrobe change after graduating from high school. She helped him organize his current fall and winter wardrobe and add to it as well. Her ideal clients are new graduates, particularly college grads looking to start careers, mothers returning to the workforce who have been wearing jogging pants and T-shirts while at home with their kids, and people who are retiring and looking for a wardrobe to reflect their new lifestyle, she says. May is no stranger to new ventures. Six years ago, she convinced her family to move to Burnaby from England. When May, formerly a resident of

Brighton, England, heard about Princess Diana’s death, something shifted for her. She had always viewed Diana as invincible, she says, and realized that if Diana could die, she could too. This feeling increased when a friend was diagnosed with breast cancer and died six months later. It was at that point that May decided to live her life as fully as possible. That led to her decision to immigrate to Canada. “You only have one life,” she says. She came with her husband John and their three children, now 21, 17 and 14. The couple felt they could provide a better, safer life for their children in Canada, Style Page 14

employ more than 200 people of more than 50 nationalities. The award was presented to Barb Livingston, associate partner at KPMG. SFU MBA student Ravneet Kaur Sandhu was also acknowledged, and received the 2010 Nancy McKinstry graduate student scholarship for leadership. The $1,500 award is

given to an SFU business graduate student who has been a leader in promoting opportunities for women in business. Sandhu, who moved to Canada two months ago, helped promote awareness of female feticide in rural areas of Punjab, India, according to the release. Raised in Punjab’s capital city of Chandigarh, she began her professional career in software

development and maintenance at India’s Infosys Technologies Ltd. She was the only female to join her company’s basketball team. The Awards for Leadership in Diversity were established in 2009 to honour McKinstry for her contributions as chair of SFU’s board of governors. The Nancy McKinstry Graduate Scholarship for Leadership is supported

by the Nancy McKinstry Endowment.

This set was the third of 18 business tour stops and two forums, intended to connect more than 250 immigrants with Canadian companies over a period of 18 months, according to a board press release. Documentary examines troubles in North Korea HERE & NOW

ormer Burnaby school trustee Helen Chang is organizing a film screening highlighting human rights violations in North Korea. Chang, who works with the Western chapter of the National Unification Advisory Council, is hosting the screening of a documentary called Hiding. “We are doing a lot of advocacy kind of activities, and this is one of my initiatives,” Chang said. The film was created by a group called Liberty in North Korea – or LiNK for short. The non-partisan organization is spearheading a public awareness campaign on human rights violations and the plight of North Koreans.

They also help North Korean refugees escape from China into a safe house in Southeast Asia. The film is on Oct. 16, from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Burnaby Village Museum, 6501 Deer Lake Ave. It’s free, and there will be a discussion afterwards. Action on homelessness

The Burnaby Task Force on Homelessness is hosting a special event for World Homeless Day on Oct. 10. There will be a screening of Poor No More –There is a Way Out, a documentary film on how Sweden and Ireland have tackled poverty in comparison to Canada. “As it is recognized that poverty is the leading

cause of homelessness, we believe that this insightful documentary will provide important and useful information to promote change,” said Wanda Mulholland, co-chair of the task force. The film starts at 7 p.m. at New Life Community Church, 8765 Government St. Admission is free, and the event is co-sponsored by local New Democrat MPs Peter Julian and Bill Siksay. he Scions are finally here in Canada! The Scion lineup currently consists of three vehicles (all under $21,000), and there’s another one on the way. They will be offered mainly (via the separate showroom-within-a-showroom idea) through 45 existing Toyota dealerships. In addition, there will be dedicated “boutique” downtown stores in major cities – one in Vancouver. Scion is a youth-oriented brand that attempts to capture the Gen Y buyer and promises to do it with a very different marketing and buying experience. The Scions are already a common sight south of the border, where they have been on the market since 2004, and you may have spotted a number of them that have strayed north of the 49th. “It’s not just the car, it’s also the way you interact with a whole new group of consumers, in the way that they want to introduce brands and products into their lives,” according to Stephen Beatty, managing director, Toyota Canada. “These buyers have more control over when, where and how they shop. It’s all about access and choice.” Scion vehicles come with a high level of standard features. Air conditioning, power windows/locks/mirrors, an audio system with MP3/iPod outlets, sport seats and a full package of safety equip-

ment are all included in the base vehicle. Purchasers then have the freedom to customize their ride from a line of more than 75 parts and accessories, including a full line of Toyota Racing Development performance gear. It’s a mix of both dealer and factory-installed equipment. The Tc Sports Coupe is the sporty leader in the Scion line and was the recipient of an extensive redesign for 2011. While nothing like the boxy shape that people associate with Scion, its design does incorporate the high belt line and the “chopped” short window glass styling traits of its Scion compatriots. It’s also a hatchback with fold-down rear seats. Scion calls the xB a “compact urban utility vehicle.” The tallest Scion is a classic two-box design, and it offers the most interior and cargo space of the trio. The xB starts at just $18,270. Scion xD is a smaller, lighter yet versatile five-door hatchback with a more fuelefficient 1.8-litre engine that’s also mated to a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. A start price of $17,200 makes it the lowest priced Scion. The xD comes with versatile rear seating system. In addition to being split 60/40 and folding flat, they also have clever slide and recline features. Unique storage features in xD include both an upper and lower glovebox, plus a pop-out cup holder on the right side of the dash. An even smaller Scion, the iQ, is expected later this year.

Dear Tom and Ray: My son-in-law, whom I love like a son, just replaced the brakes on my ‘07 Camry. It was fine for a day or so, and then I started to hear this “rubbing” noise. It is only when I start moving forward, never in reverse, and it quits within 30 seconds. Sometimes it’s very loud, sometimes not. He put on ceramic brakes, not “certified” Toyota parts. I took it to the dealership where I have all my service done, and they said the noise is because of the ceramic brakes. They said it is not a safety

issue, but they would be happy to remove the ceramic brakes and put on Toyota brakes and, of course, turn the rotors and charge me an arm and a leg. Can you explain what this is and if there is a fix for it? I love your show – you guys are hilarious. Thanks for any help you can give. – Denise TOM: Well, that was awfully nice of him to do your brakes for you, Denise. Do you think he’ll be as nice when you ask him to do them again? RAY: No, that’s unnecessary. He did a perfectly good job. We often use ceramic brake pads, too; they’re supposed to last longer. But if you don’t change the rotors at the same time, you take a risk that there will be some noise, and that’s all that happened here.

TOM: Yeah. The noise is just a slight rubbing because your old rotors have been worn in the shape of your old pads, and the new pads don’t match them exactly. But they’re perfectly safe, and your brakes will stop the car just the way they’re supposed to. RAY: If it’s really driving you nuts, then tell your son-in-law that you’re really grateful for his help, but, unfortunately, your brakes started making noise right after he did the brake job. In other words, take the car back to the mechanic and complain. That’s what our customers do! TOM: And if he’s willing to change the rotors for you (soon – before the new pads conform to the old rotors), he can make the noise go away. Changing

From Tuesday, October 12 to approximately Wednesday, October 27, 2010, Metro Vancouver will be relocating a water main as part of the improvements to the Trans-Canada Highway. Sister Aloysius suspects the priest of interfering with one of the school’s male students – and she sets in motion a chain of events that is meant to destroy Father Flynn’s character and reputation. The production is directed by Judi Price, and the cast includes Marianne LaRochelle as Sister Aloysius and Rob Egger as Father Flynn, with Carline Lemire-Steel as Sister James and Nyasha Katedza as Mrs. Muller. Born in New Westminster, BC on April 10, 1920, passed away peacefully in Royal Columbian Hospital on October 3, 2010. He was predeceased by his wife Mary in 1994, three brothers and one sister. Albert is survived by his children: son Ralph and wife Linda and daughter Carol and husband Darren; four grandchildren: Derek, Lorraine, Samantha and Meagan and four great-grandchildren. Albert was a WWII veteran. He served 3½ years on the hospital ship, Lady Nelson. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 16 at 1:00 PM in the Burkeview Chapel of First Memorial Funeral Services, 1340 Dominion Ave., Port Coquitlam. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Aunt Lil and the nurses and staff at RCH 6th Floor N. for the care they provided to Albert. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Bernard (Barney) Henry Smith who went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 16th, 2010 at the age of 85 years old. Barney is survived by his brothers Bob (Jill), Paul and sister Gwen (Bill) as well as many extended family members. Barney was born July 31st, 1925 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, and came to B.C. in 1946 where he settled in New Westminster as a long time resident. Barney retired after a long career with BC Tel. Prior to joining BC Tel, Barney worked for B & K on the New Westminster waterfront. Barney was a kind, thoughtful and generous person who will be greatly missed by all. No service by request.

Happiness – a simple word, but a profound concept, and a state that can seem quite elusive to us. As a Career Coach, I meet with clients who comment that they are simply not ‘happy’ with their work and lives and that they are seeking a Gregg Taylor career that will bring them more happiness and satisfaction. Although I do believe that finding a better job or a career that is more in line with your gifts, talents and skills will help, I can see that it isn’t the whole answer either. What I’ve learned from both my professional experience and my own life journey is that happiness is a feeling of contentment and satisfaction that emanates from a life lived in integrity and balance - a life lived ‘on purpose’. This does not mean necessarily having a world changing purpose, but instead deciding for ourselves what’s important to us – the people, family, work, and community we’re surrounded by and how we relate and contribute to each of them. Quite often I find that when I work with people through these questions many of us are living lives based on the expectations of society, family and others, rather than what we prefer and value for ourselves. Changing this does not mean discounting the opinions of others, or neglecting our responsibilities or commitments, but rather reaffirming our commitment to those things, and creating our own unique way of living out a ‘personal purpose’ in our lives. In our three week career exploration program (The Transitions Program) we take time to address these issues so that our participants consider carefully how work fits in with the rest of their lives and priorities. In this way they create a career plan that allows for a ‘work/life balance’ that is sustainable over time.
