A farmhouse from 1908 sits quietly tucked behind newer residences on Victory Street in Burnaby.

Long ago, the block was part of a strawberry and fruit farm, owned by Onezime and Charlsie Naud.

Today, the heritage home is all but hidden from view, and one Burnaby resident is upset that the historic building was allowed to fade into the background.

Deryk Atkinson has lived in Burnaby since he moved here as a teenager, in 1964.

He and his wife like to wander the South Slope neighbourhood. They have noticed the house at 4737 Victory St., near Jubilee Avenue, and watched it over the years.

But Atkinson was distressed to see the Naud home blocked from view on Victory Street by a newer home built in front.

“How will we ever see it?” he said, adding that providing financial incentives to homeowners to preserve heritage homes is redundant if residents can’t see history preserved.

As it stands now, the Naud home can only be fully seen from the laneway behind.

Atkinson believes it is important to protect and showcase heritage spots for future generations, he said.

“We should always pay homage to the past,” Atkinson said. “It is nice to preserve what we can.”

Onezime and Charlsie Naud built the farmhouse.

They settled on the site in 1900 and built the home in 1908.

Onezime, from Portneuf, Que., was a talented stonemason who worked on the parliament building in Victoria, the Vancouver post office and the New Westminster Bridge.

Onezime used glacial erratic granite boulders, a geological feature unique to Burnaby, to form the foundation for the home.

The home was built in the Queen Anne Revival style. Onezime brought his knowledge of Quebec farmhouses with him and used some of those elements in

the design, as well, such as a bell-cast hipped roof.

The heritage home was the centre of a large debate in 2007, when a heritage revitalization agreement was struck with the owner.

Council approved the owner’s plans for a subdivided lot with a 2,910-sq.-ft. home in front of Naud House on Oct. 22, 2007.

Several residents complained about the plan at a public hearing held on Sept. 18, 2007.

But councillors decided it was better to preserve the home by giving the owner the economic incentive to do so, with the subdivided lot, than to risk it being demolished for a new home altogether.

“In order to facilitate keeping the house, the economics have got to be there,” Colleen Jordan, chair of the city’s heritage committee, said in an interview with NOW reporter Brooke Larsen. “You can’t have your cake and eat it, too. In this case, the cake is the Naud House.”

The previous owner, the Elizabeth Fry Society, had planned to have the home demolished.

But the current owner agreed to preserve the home, while adding a second suite and a second house on the property.

Local experts are warning this year’s flourishing sockeye return does not mean the fish are in the clear, although more than 34 million of the salmon are expected to come back to the Fraser – the highest return in nearly a century.

“To see this is incredible. It’s great news, and it’s very, very exciting,” said Mark Angelo, chair of BCIT’s Rivers Institute. “(But) we have to refrain from getting overly optimistic because we’re not out of

the woods yet.”

Angelo called this year’s run an amazing contrast to 2009. Last year’s was the lowest in 52 years, with 1.7 million sockeye finally returning to the Fraser to spawn when Fisheries and Oceans Canada was expecting 10.6 million. No one knows exactly what happened, but theories include disease and sea lice from fish farms, pollution and warming waters.

The federal government called for a judicial inquiry on the declining stock, and the commission is scheduled to report back with recommendations in 2011.

The commercial sockeye fishery has been mostly closed on the Fraser since 2006, but Fisheries and Oceans Canada is allowing fishermen to catch up to 13.3 million sockeye this year.

And while this year’s sockeye run is in good shape, Angelo said it’s too early to tell if this marks the beginning of a major turnaround. Some species – such as coho, chum and steelhead trout – are still struggling, he said, adding that two to four consecutive years of strong sockeye returns would indicate recovery. Angelo said we still have to manage the fishery and protect habitat.

Angelo guessed the conditions for fish from this year’s return were likely more favourable as they headed out to sea as young, vulnerable juveniles.

Rivers Day festivities set

Burnaby city council has approved the plan and budget for Burnaby’s Rivers Day. The free public event, expected to attract 1,500 participants, is focused on the Fraser River this year.

It is the 30th anniversary of Rivers Day in B.C. and the fifth anniversary of World Rivers Day. Burnaby’s World Rivers Day event takes place on Sunday, Sept. 26 at Burnaby Fraser Foreshore Park.

There are many events, activities and displays booked for the day, including a welcoming ceremony at the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s aboriginal services building, speeches by Rivers Day founder Mark Angelo and

other dignitaries, environmental and ecological displays, gold panning, live music and a children’s zone. There will also be fish mural painting and food and business displays, according to a city report.

Council allotted $5,500 for advertising and promotion of the event.

The Outdoor Recreation Council of B.C., BCIT, Byrne Creek Streamkeepers and the Stream of Dreams Mural Society have consulted with the city about Rivers Day. The Stream of Dreams Mural Society is planning a Dreamfish Gala on Saturday, Sept. 25 at the Burnaby Lake Rowing Pavilion, in advance of World Rivers Day.

New school set to open in city Brand new year:

While parents in neighbouring Vancouver are rallying against school closures, the Burnaby district is opening a new elementary this September.

The new school is on Burnaby Mountain, close to SFU and the UniverCity development.

It’s been named University Highlands Elementary, and so far about 150 students have registered. The district is expecting nearly 24,000 students overall, when the school year starts on Sept.

“We’re going to stay fairly stable, more so than other districts that are really struggling,” said board chair Diana Mumford.

Because Burnaby’s student numbers are relatively consistent, the district hasn’t been forced to closed schools, while enrolment has been declining around the province.

“We’re not having schools close because we try to build programs into schools so it keeps the enrolment strong,” she said. One example is the Mandarin language arts program, set to start this year at Forest Grove Elementary.

But while enrolment is stable, the new school year will present some problems.

“We had $5.2 million in cuts, so that’s going to

impact the supplies and services available for our district, and we’re going to be looking at further cuts,” Mumford said. “So, it’s not a real rosy picture. We do have needs that aren’t being addressed.”

Also new this year, 24 Burnaby schools will be offering full-day kindergarten. The provincial government’s plan is to phase in all-day kindergarten in half of B.C. schools this year and the other half next year.

Flag person struck by car A Burnaby driver allegedly impaired by alcohol hit a flag person in a Coquitlam construction zone early Sunday morning.

The incident occurred at about 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 29, when a 24-year-old man was driving a Toyota Yaris westbound on Lougheed Highway near Colony Farm.

The driver allegedly struck a 33-yearold female flag person, who was controlling traffic at the entrance to the construction zone. The woman was thrown by the impact. She was taken to hospital, where she was treated for non-life-threatening

injuries and released later Sunday.

Coquitlam RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet said the initial investigation revealed alcohol was a factor in the accident.

“It definitely could have been a lot worse. The consequences here could have been tragic,” Paquet said.

The driver was taken to the Coquitlam detachment and then released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.

WorkSafe B.C. is also investigating the incident.

We don’t have the answer – although we’d certainly argue that the HST issue and the lowest minimum wage in the country may be part of the picture – but

we certainly hope that the question is being considered by the powers that be in Victoria.

Those powers may argue that we’re not, in fact, living under an economic cloud. That may even be true. But if British Columbians as a whole perceive otherwise, that perception could drive us towards the very economic downturn we’re so anxious about.

No, we don’t need to panic. But we do need to be sure we’re not so distracted by the silver lining that we forget about the looming dark cloud.

Re: Think carefully about RCMP, Letters to the editor, Burnaby NOW, Aug. 25.

Kudos to Mike Horton for spurring public debate on Burnaby’s policing plans.

Policing is Burnaby’s single largest expenditure ($41 million in 2010). So it is refreshing to see Mayor Derek Corrigan and Coun. Nick Volkow discuss – even publicly disagree over – such a major issue within civic jurisdiction.

Mr. Horton offers NOW readers many reasons for reconsidering the RCMP – including national perceptions of low officer morale. This issue also has local causes. For example, chronic officer understaffing may push commanders to make constant requests (verging on supervisory harassment) for overtime.

Constant “forced” overtime is a major cause of low morale. And excessive contracting out of policingrelated work from RCMP officers to civilian workers can easily promote officer understaffing.

Understaffing may affect any police force – not just the RCMP. Its root cause, in Burnaby’s case, is our mayor’s demonstrated inability to write a coherent policing plan to support local real estate development plans. He is too quick to write building permits, too slow to add officer positions and too shortsighted to draw the connection between this disjointed planning and chronic understaffing.

How severe is this understaffing? In 1998 Burnaby had one officer per 744 citizens (or 241 duty officers backed by 89 civilians). Given today’s 214,000 Burnaby residents, regaining this ratio implies a local roster of 288 active general duty officers. Further

allocation to this core force would include regional officers, officers on leave and authorized positions to be filled during the fiscal year on a pace consistent with estimated population growth.

Burnaby’s 2010 budget (page 68) lists 298.6 officer positions – 24.6 of them regional (backed by 123 civilians). So 274 duty officers are available (not deducting officers on leave). This is a shortfall of at least 14 officers even with no growth allowance.

And while the detachment had one civilian worker for 2.7 officers in 1998, it now has one civilian worker for 2.3 officers.

Burnaby deserves a full-strength police force – composed of police officers.

Mr. Horton cites concern about excessive transfers. A civic force would not experience transfers but may experience an inability to recruit officers in the face of high housing costs. Many Burnaby officers are on their first posting from Regina, typically assigned here without choice.

Imagine trying to recruit civic officers without a steady supply of fresh Regina academy graduates to draw on and without the ready outlet provided by their subsequent transfers to posts with lower housing costs. Council must consider mechanisms to address this concern as part of any move away from the RCMP. (Perhaps a new police building might take the form of a tower with office floors below and barracks/apartments above.)

Mr. Horton also cites gender discrimination. This is endemic in Canada (not just in the RCMP) and must be stopped. But would an alternative force fare any better?

The Burnaby Fire Department’s experience with Captain Bonnie Prokopetz may be instructive. Would her lawsuit against the fire department have led a local force to greater awareness than the national RCMP

of the causes and costs of gender discrimination? (Perhaps, but only if the records were left unsealed.)

Mr. Horton lastly cites incompatibility of “paramilitary” training with community policing. This may be true but ignores the fact that many Burnaby residents see the local RCMP as good practitioners of community policing. Perhaps this is proof that management and internal culture do vary according to location (even in the RCMP.) Taxpayers deserve more of a policing plan from Corrigan than public musings and flip-flops. NOW reporters spent years covering Corrigan’s public musings about adopting civic policing. Today they report his unreserved calls for RCMP renewal.

Was this all just bluster or a ham-fisted attempt to stop former solicitor general Rich Coleman from merging local RCMP detachments into one regional force to cut administrative duplication across cities while better coordinating local police resources in the fight against jurisdictionspanning crime? Who knows for sure. But, in 2005, after Victoria began funding a portion of police costs, Corrigan quit railing against regionalization. Burnaby today hosts 25 cross-detachment officers in what looks like creeping “reorganization” into regional policing. And, as the Vancouver Police Department’s analysis of the Pickton case notes, Vancouver area police forces still lag on cross-city coordination.

Burnaby taxpayers deserve the best possible use of their policing dollars. If that requires cross-city consolidation of the civilian side of the RCMP, then that should be done openly and decisively as part of the provincewide debate over RCMP contract renewal.

So why does the RCMP still organize its administration by city? Ask Mayor Corrigan. Let’s see if he and Coun. Volkow want real debate on policing!

After the sheriffs led the prisoner away, the reporters asked the court clerk to replay the 30-second tape.

The clerk refused, even though the Crown counsel said it was OK. “So here you have three reporters covering a jury trial in B.C. Supreme Court and when the man convicted of shooting three people finally stands up and speaks, you don’t know what he said and

court staff won’t let you check the quote for accuracy,” Dickson said at the workshop. “This is the disconnect. How does that even make sense?”

I suggest reading Dickson and Times Colonist colleagues Lindsay Kines and Rob Shaw’s February four-part investigation Access Denied, which exposes how the principle of public access to courts can be violated by the courts, their officials and staff. After reading it, write to your MLA to insist the government makes good on its promise to provide proper public access and

implement a consistent policy provincewide.

The public needs to have confidence in the court system. Secrets don’t serve anyone. Or as Daly said: “We’re in a low-grade democracy – and it’s up to citizens to change that.”

There is a small bit of good news. After intense industry lobbying, Attorney General Mike de Jong did scrap the online search fees for criminal and traffic court records, which just came into effect.

Jennifer Atchison was ‘a mom to the world’ Jennifer Moreau staff reporter

Burnaby has lost a longtime leader in protecting local waterways. Jennifer Atchison, a founder and award-winning member of the Stoney Creek Environment Committee, passed away on Sept.

20 from cancer.

Atchison died calmly, with her husband Doug at her side, at Burnaby Hospital.

Her death represents a great loss to the community, said Mark Angelo, chair of BCIT’s Rivers Institute.

“She was a wonderful, wonderful woman. Over the years, she has just been the heart and soul of the great work that’s been done on Stoney Creek. She’s been an amazing streamkeeper,” he said. “To hear that, it’s a real loss.”

Angelo described Atchison as very dedicated and committed to her cause.

“We all thought very highly of Atchison,” he said. “My heart goes out to her friends and family.”

In the mid-1990s, Atchison helped form the Stoney Creek

Environment Committee, a group of volunteers that worked to rehabilitate the Burnaby Mountain creek so salmon could return. She started Stoney Creek’s annual salmon send-off, an event where small salmon are released into the water to help rebuild the stock.

Atchison received accolades for her work from the provincial and federal government. The Pacific Salmon Foundation honoured her for bringing salmon back to Burnaby Mountain, while the City of Burnaby declared her a local hero and presented her with an environmental award.

Christine Leston has been volunteering with the Stoney Creek Environment Committee since 1998.

“We were good friends,” she said. “We did bird walks, spawner counts and fish trapping.”

Leston said Atchison’s health hasn’t been good for the past few years.

“She’s been preparing to take a back seat, getting the rest of us to take on more responsibilities.

We will miss her, but the streamkeeping will go on.”

Besides her life as a community figure, Atchison was also a

wife, mother and grandparent.

Husband Doug spent three decades with her.

“I would describe her as a very loving, kind person, a very outgoing person. She cared hugely for the environment and other people, too,” he said. “I’m going to miss her tremendously. She had such a presence about her.”

One rainy night, about 20 years ago, the two were driving down Lougheed Highway, when they heard a yelping noise and pulled over. They found a dog with a broken leg, took it down to a vet and later, ended up adopting it. That’s the kind of person Atchison was.

“She was very caring, and very responsible too, for all living beings,” Doug said. “It showed her benevolence and kindness.”

Doug said she touched a lot of people’s lives.

“She did an amazing amount for the community.”

Daughter Renee Parker described her mother as an intuitive and spiritual person, with a deep respect for all living things.

“She was a mom to the world, not just me,” she said.

“She was very cuddly, even right up to the end. Even at the hospital, I was trying to give her a hug, and she said, ‘Just climb up on the bed with me’ – and I did,” Renee recalls. “But she was not ready to go, totally not ready. She felt like she was in the middle of things. She wanted to do so much more.” ◆

Rewriting the script on mental illness Jennifer Moreau staff reporter

I

f you don’t like the stereotypical role you’ve been given, why not rewrite the script? That’s what three SFU students did by creating and broadcasting videos on YouTube, detailing their personal experiences with serious mental illnesses.

The documentary-style videos were a project for the Canadian Mental Health Association’s Mental Health Week. Each tells a story of a young man with a mental illness that could ruin his life were it not treated properly.

Burnaby resident Brent Seal is 26 and in his last year of business studies. He was diagnosed with schizophrenia and is the founder of Students for Mental Wellness.

In his video segment, he explains how there were some signs of his mental illness, but he didn’t notice them, and then his psychiatrist told him it was schizophrenia.

At first, he couldn’t drive, go to school or live on his own.

Taylor Kagel, 24, also lives in Burnaby. He graduated in 2009 from computing science and likes mountain biking and hiking.

He had depression and anxiety in the first year of university, but he figured it was the regular ups and downs of life. He wasn’t diagnosed till the end of second year, and it took him another year before he could talk to his friends about it. He needed to open up first, to start the dialogue, and he’s now committed to staying open about his mental illness.

Joe Roback, 24, is a psychology student with Type 1 bipolar disorder, with severe mania. He is president of SFU’s chess club, and he writes music as a creative outlet. For him, the hardest part of having a mental illness is the attached stigma and misunderstanding.

Sitting in the sun on a grassy field atop SFU’s Burnaby campus, the three young men recount their experiences of speaking out.

“The idea was just to put a positive face on mental illness, showing that people can get back to school or studies or work and live happy productive lives,” Seal says.

“They really are just our personal stories and how we view stigma and how we view possible changes as far as stereotypes and negative attitudes around mental illness,” Kagel adds.

Learn bhangra dancing for credit in new SFU course

You saw bhangra dancing performed during the 2010 Winter Olympics and the opening for the recent Canadian Juno Awards. Simon Fraser University students now have the opportunity to learn this popular Indian dance form and earn credit for it this fall.

The course, called Popular Dance – Introduction to Modern and Traditional

Bhangra, will be available for the first time through SFU’s new School for the Contemporary Arts at Woodward’s.

“This class will appeal to both bhangra enthusiasts and beginners. Students will learn traditional bhangra moves, modern stunts, facial expressions and lyrical translations,” says instructor Raakhi Sinha, who is also artistic director for the South Asian

unable to take care of themselves, untrustworthy, unreliable.

“It’s often made worse by movies and the media and the odd random escapade on a campus and dramatic suicide attempt,” Seal says.

What makes things more difficult is those images are often internalized, as Kagel explains.

“Self stigma, that was a big thing for me, I think, actually having those beliefs myself,” he says, citing stereotypes of depressed people as being boring or weak. “I would go to great lengths trying to hide, because I thought that’s how people would react, that’s how they would see me, because that’s how I saw myself at the time.”

Kagel says he had to build a stable selfidentity that incorporated the illness and a lot of other core characteristics.

Another way of breaking down stereotypes is through positive interaction, as described by Seal when talking about a hiking group they started with Students for Mental Wellness. Originally, the group was for people with mental illnesses, but they expanded it to include family and friends. They realized that people who don’t have mental illnesses need to mix with those who do in order to understand them better. Now, you can’t tell who is diagnosed and who isn’t, Seal says.

Besides the hiking group, the three are also part of the Lowdown, a speakers’ bureau run by the Mood Disorder Association of B.C. The three meet with and talk about their experiences with

various audiences – high schools, colleges and police, for example.

The concept is the same one illustrated in the videos: Tell your story, dispel the myths and offer positive alternative to the stereotypes.

All of the public speaking has helped the men immensely.

Seal says it’s nurtured his self-esteem and personal development. Roback agrees, saying you get to make a difference while moving towards self-actualization – to realize one’s full potential.

Kagel describes it as incredibly rewarding, almost like exposure therapy that helps with his social anxiety.

In the meantime, Kagel keeps recovery on the mind, but not as a destination per se.

“It’s not something that you can just cure. You can get a lot better, but I think it’s always helpful to stay aware of it, realize you’re going to have ups and downs, bad days, maybe even full relapses, but you still move back completely away from harm reduction and to the recovery model. You hear that saying, ‘recovery is possible.’ It sounds kind of trite, and in a sense it’s true, as long as you view it as a journey of recovery. It doesn’t have to seem overly optimistic. Most of my classmates were health-conscious, but not all were living healthy lives. Though we would all eventually be sleepdeprived, stressed and caffeine-dependent, some of my classmates were overweight, drank too much or

So this was the crosssection of humanity that entered med school. During our training, the culture of medicine would change all of us, resulting in the doctors who treat you today.

some were in their 30s and even 40s. Most were single, but a significant number were married. Some had children, and one classmate gave birth during the four years.

Most were interested in helping people; some valued status and money.

on-physicians sometimes think of physicians as a different breed. They speak an odd language, their handwriting is indecipherable, they put us through the most unusual physical rituals and they sometimes act like condescending jerks.

Fortunately, the latter refers to a minority of doctors. If you’ve been unfortunate enough to have been treated by one of them, rest assured that doctors sometimes treat one another the same way.

But your typical doctor started off as a fairly normal person. When I met my classmates at the beginning of med school at UBC, none of them looked or acted like doctors.

Though most of them were overachievers, had an A average and played some musical instrument, in other respects they were like average people.

common among medical students. Obsessive compulsive traits (though not necessarily the obsessive compulsive anxiety disorder itself) are common and actually helpful in medicine.

You’d want your physician to be certain that he got all his facts straight and that he checked the dose of your medication. I would prefer a surgeon who was compulsive about attending to the last bleeding blood vessel and accounted for every instrument and sponge before she closed me up at the end of an operation.

Pre-med students, vying for the limited spots in medical schools, are competitive and sometimes cutthroat.

That competitiveness remained prominent in a number of my classmates and continues to some extent in practising physicians. We still tend to judge ourselves in comparison to our peers. Not comforting to both physician and non-physician is the old riddle, “What do you call the guy who graduates at the bottom of his med school class?” The answer: “Doctor.”

If you have a BMI greater than 30, you are defined as obese. Or, if you have a body fat percentage greater than 32 per cent for women or 25 per cent for men, you are defined as obese. Your BMI can be calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in metres squared. To find out if you are obese you can use this calculation, or get a body fat test done.

In Canada, we have 5.5 million obese adults, a number that has grown dramatically over the past 20 years. The number of obese children in Canada has nearly tripled over the last 25 years, and we now have 500,000 obese children.

Seasonal pruning can help raspberries thrive GREEN SCENE Anne Marrison

Question We had a fabulous crop of raspberries this year, and new canes have now appeared. These are over six feet tall and still growing.

Should I cut them back? New canes are appearing under a sidewalk and in another garden bed.

– Stella Stanger, Vancouver Answer It’s always best to shorten the new canes to a height that makes them easier to pick. This is usually about 1.2 metres.

Pruning is best done in fall or winter when you can see exactly what you’re doing. Next year’s raspberries will be born on sidestems of the shortened canes.

Any weak, spindly canes can be pruned right out. They do produce berries, usually smaller

ones, but they also create extra cover and shade, which can cause mildew problems if you postpone picking for a day or so due to rain.

About the new canes popping up all around: Raspberries will turn into a thicket all over any garden if they’re not stopped.

People with large lots sometimes deliberately surround their raspberry bed with lawn so that suckers get mown off.

Otherwise keeping them under control takes a lot of digging. ◆ Question My apple tree gets apples, but every year the apples get black marks on them, they don’t grow very big and some of them split. Even the leaves end up with black marks and dry up and die. What can I do for next year’s crop?

– Deb Losier, by e-mail Answer Your apple tree has scab. This is a fungal disease that is more widespread after wet springs. It would be less severe if you spray in late winter with lime sulphur and dormant oil. However, this spray

does kill some beneficial insects.

Be sure to pick up all the leaves every fall and dispose of them (garbage or municipal compost – not your own compost).

Municipal compost reaches very high temperatures that kill pathogens. Then mulch under the tree so that fungal spores can’t splash up into the tree during rain.

It would also help if you fertilized the tree every spring with compost or balanced organic fertilizer spread around the drip line (edge) of the tree.

Apples increase in size if, in dry spells, you can water in around the drip line when fruit is forming.

Some trees are very susceptible to scab – especially kinds that do well in the Okanagan but find our climate too wet. Most garden centres sell scabresistant apple trees, and many of these have delicious apples. Liberty is one of the best. Others include Freedom, Jonafree, Prima and Goldrush.

Youth centre shuts doors

The young and the still young at heart came out on Friday for a barbecue to say a final goodbye to the Edmonds Youth Resource Centre, a drop-in centre for kids aged 13 to 18 located in the soon-to-be demolished Eastburn Community Centre.

The parting was a fairly sweet sorrow, however, as a new and improved facility a few blocks away will soon be opening its doors to meet the varied needs of Burnaby’s teens.

The centre, operated under the umbrella of the Lower Mainland Purpose Society for Youth and Families, has been open for nearly two decades, and many former staff members and now fully grown patrons stopped by for one last time.

“It was pretty great,” said youth programs coordinator Sasha Enthoven. “A lot of the kids who used the centre even 10 years ago were there, and many of them took little pieces of

the centre that meant something to them, because a lot of them helped paint ceiling tiles and things like that that helped made things more homey.”

Teens won’t have long to wait for a new hangout as the YOUth Hub, an even larger resource facility set to open near Metrotown, is currently completing renovations.

“The YOUth Hub is basically a collaboration of services,” explained Enthoven.

“There’s a clinic, there’s a school program through the Burnaby school district, and then there will be various services like drug and alcohol services, social workers available, social services for immigrant youth, and all kinds of things” The new facility will also simply be a welcoming place for a kid to hang out with friends to watch a movie, shoot some pool, or use a computer.

“It’s really a casual dropin service unless youth express a specific need for service,” said senior youth counsellor Tyler Dobbin.

Enthoven said the YOUth Hub,locatedat4750Imperial St., will hopefully be fully open by mid-September, with a formal opening ceremony in October.

The well-known song Bread and Roses was inspired by a strike of female textile workers a century ago in Lawrence, Massachusetts, who carried a banner saying, “We want bread and roses too.”

Prompted by an individual mill owner’s decision to lower wages when a new law shortening the work week went into effect, the strike spread rapidly and grew to more than 20,000 workers at other mills within a week.

The strike, which lasted more than two months, put an end to the belief that female and/or immigrant workers weren’t able to get organized. The women eventually won major concessions for all textile workers, male and female alike. Bread and roses have come to symbolize women’s demands for equality and dignity in the workplace.

You’re invited to this union bash The B.C. Federation of Labour’s annual Labour Day picnic will be returning home to Burnaby this year after last year’s relocation to Trout Lake in East Vancouver.

ers, but we’re certainly open to volunteers.”

Ages said the tank is being sponsored by the Vancouver District Council, “who will be braving the boundary and crossing over into Burnaby in order to raise some money for the young worker’s program.”

The Burnaby Fire Fighters Charitable Society will be firing up the grill, providing hot dogs and drinks for 50 cents each with (of course) no added HST. “It’s just a great shmoozefest for the adults and good entertainment

for the kids,” said Ages. “It’s called ‘the People’s Republic of Burnaby,’ so what better place to celebrate Labour Day?” The picnic takes place between Swangard Stadium and the Variety Park Playground, and the best place to park is the lot just off of Kingsway. work week. After a downtown march organized by the Toronto Trades Assembly with an estimated 10,000 people in attendance was held in support of the strikers, furious politician George Brown – one of the Fathers of Confederation and founder of the Globe – used his considerable clout to have

police charge union leaders with conspiracy.

Although laws criminalizing union activity had already long been abolished back in England, some were still technically on the books in its former colony, and so Brown managed to get over two dozen members of the strike committee arrested and jailed.

This didn’t go over terribly well with the proletariat, who ultimately came out in droves for a second march held in Ottawa, prompting Prime Minister John A. Macdonald to quickly get rid of what he called the “barbarous” anti-union laws.

Trade unions began celebrating the hard-won victory with annual parades, which soon became so popular the Americans began to do the same, and in 1894 both countries declared the first Monday of September to be an official holiday to celebrate workers.

Green goal unites labour and activists

The province’s main environmental and labour leaders will be putting their heads together next week at a special “Jobs, Justice, Climate” conference on building a green provincial economy, held in Vancouver.

The keynote speaker will be David Foster, executive director of the BlueGreen Alliance, a U.S.-based national strategic partnership between labour unions and environmental organizations, dedicated to expanding the number and quality of jobs in the green economy.

“I am a great believer that an organization succeeds not only because of the hard work of its board, staff and leadership, but because it anticipates important trends and cross currents in our economy,” said Foster in a prepared statement. “In a tightly connected global economy, where the imperative to solve the climate crisis is interwoven with the aspirations of six billion people for a better life, any individual success of either the labor or environmental movements is now dependent upon their mutual success.”

For the past 20 years, Foster has been fostering a national partnership between labour unions and environmental organizations dedicated to expanding the green economy and advancing workers’ rights around the globe. Under his leadership, the BlueGreen Alliance unites more than six million people in pursuit of good jobs, a clean environment and a green economy with a focus that includes global warming, clean energy, fair trade and reducing toxins in the workplace.

Canada’s bloodiest strike took place in Winnipeg in 1919.

Although many Canadian companies had profiteered from the First World War, wages and working conditions were dismal and labour regulations were mostly non-existent. High unemployment rates and inflation contributed to growing unrest amongst members of the labour movement, and the uprising in Russia in 1917 had inspired trade unionists in Winnipeg and elsewhere.

After talks broke down between workers in the building and metal trades and their employers, the Winnipeg Trades and Labour Council called for a general strike. More than 30,000 workers from different occupations, both public and private sector, across the city walked off their jobs during the Winnipeg General Strike, effectively crippling the city. The strike finally ended on June 25, but not before the infamous “Bloody Saturday” when chaos broke out after the city’s mayor literally read the Riot Act to a crowd that had assembled to protest the arrest of the strike leaders. Mounties on horseback then charged, swinging batons and later firing guns at protesters. Two strikers were killed and about 30 were wounded.

n Labour Day, we mark the contributions that working people have made towards building a more just and equitable society.

Pensions, medicare, unemployment insurance and quality education for our kids are part of the legacy that our parents and grandparents established for us. Their desire to build a better society for future generations created a range of important social programs that would be accessible to all regardless of income.

Along with these, workers and their unions fought for fair, family-supporting wages and benefits, and working conditions that addressed issues like occupational health and safety and equality.

Today’s seniors were looking out for us.

Now we need to look out for them.

The Hospital Employees’ Union has a tradition of caring for seniors, with efforts to improve standards in seniors’ care dating back to the 1970s. As the union organized workers in B.C. nursing homes, the critical link between poor working conditions for staff and substandard caring conditions for residents became clear.

Not in a union? Here’s a primer on how to join one There a many reasons people choose to join unions – better pay, benefits, job security, reasonable working hours and a safe and healthy work environment being among the main ones.

Whether you work in the private sector job or in public service, in a workplace big or small, you have the right to join a union. According to the B.C. Federation of Labour, more than 4,600 workers in the province joined a union last year, and the process isn’t nearly as daunting as some (perhaps your boss?) would have you believe.

Step 1: While there is no “i” in team, there is one in union, but you still can’t start one all by yourself. The first step to getting a signed collective agreement is to talk with your co-workers and find out what issues are important to them. The whole point of joining a union is to make your workplace a better place to work, so it is crucial to find out what the issues are that matter at your worksite and what workers would like to see change.

Step 2: Contact a union organizer who can

answer any questions you might have in confidence. To start your search for the right union, visit www.bcfed.com/ organize.

Step 3: After you’ve chosen the right union to go to bat for you, have as many people in your workplace as possible sign union cards. Not only is signing union cards a legal requirement to get a vote to join a union, it also ensures most people at your worksite are united. B.C. Federation of Labour recommends getting at least two-thirds of employees to sign union

cards. They will contact the employer and request voluntary acceptance of the union’s right to engage in collective bargaining. Employers don’t have the right to know who signed and will never be told.

Step 4: After receiving the signed union cards, the B.C. Labour Relations Board will hold a secret vote at your workplace within 10 calendar days about officially joining a union.

Labour unions have been around in Canada for around 200 years. There is a record of skilled tradesmen in the Maritimes having a union organization during the War of 1812.

Hoffa ‘riddle’ still unsolved

Jimmy Hoffa, president of the Teamsters union from 1957 until 1971, is best known in pop culture for his mysterious disappearance and presumed death in 1975. It’s perhaps ironic then that Hoffa’s middle name was Riddle. It was his mother’s maiden name and some would say a fitting description of how his life ended. Yet another mystery is if his parents were aware that “Jimmy Riddle” was and still is Cockney rhyming slang meaning “to piddle.”

Pakistan is battling with its worst flood crisis in the nation’s history, with about 20 million people affected and more than 1,600 killed nearly a month after the floods began, and the Canadian Labour Congress wants to provide an easy way for union members to make a donation to help the victims.

s I sat and listened, my mind kept saying this can’t be happening. These stories belonged to another era, long ago or at least

far away from British Columbia. They belonged to a time or a place where workers had no rights, where we worked 12 or 14 hours a day for low pay or no pay, where there was no safety equipment, when we were hungry most days

and the government looked the other way.

Unfortunately, the dozen workers sitting in the conference room at the B.C. Federation of Labour in early August were not talking about working conditions in the last century

or in a faraway land. They were talking about working conditions this summer in B.C. The story these tree planters told shocked the people of British Columbia.

They even shocked the provincial labour minister.

Within a week, it was clear that not only did these workers find themselves working for a terrible employer, they had also been let down by government agencies responsible for ensuring their safety.

The Royal City Reign is hoping to follow its moniker to a long and productive future in the Lower Mainland Metro girls’ soccer league.

The under-14 Reign will mark its debut in the topflight Metro division when the minor soccer season kicks off later this month.

The move to Metro is heartedly endorsed by Ian Wakeling, co-head coach of the Royal City Soccer Association.

The last true Metro team from New Westminster was put together by the association’s other head coach Gerry Heaney almost a decade ago.

Both coaches agree that the long-term viability of the club’s program is to provide the stability and programs that will keep young players involved in the game in New Westminster.

While the Reign is in some ways the flagbearer of this new coaching philosophy, the under-12 Royal City Salsa may be the team that takes this intention to the next level.

The Salsa, under head coach Mike Stewart, has been undefeated in league play over the last two seasons and has a bright future ahead of it.

The Reign will no doubt feel the growing pains going up against the Lower Mainland’s powerhouse associations. “(The Reign) are going to be enthusiastic. There are a lot of good personalities and they picked up

Canada’s national women’s rugby team will face the United States for fifth place overall at the Rugby World Cup in England Sunday.

Canada put its recent loss to France in pool play behind it and tagged Scotland with an emphatic defeat, winning 41-0 Tuesday.

Burnaby Lake Rugby Club flyhalf Anna Schnell booted 11 points for the Canadians, including four conversions and one penalty goal.

Winger and team vice captain Maria Gallo, one of five Burnaby Lake players on the women’s national squad, also scored one of the team’s six tries against the Scots.

Starting prop forward Corinne Jacobsen and scrum half Julia Sugawara, and Kim Donaldson are also Burnaby Lake club products.

Last Saturday, Canada dropped a 23-8 encounter to the third-seeded French XV, losing its fourthplace standing at the rugby women’s World Cup in England.

Despite the loss, Canada was still in contention for a spot in the semifinals as the next best team to come out of pool play, until Australia overwhelmed South Africa 62-0 later in the day in its final fixture to steal the final spot.

The Aussies needed to win by 56 points or better to eliminate Canada from championship play.

Schnell kicked one penalty goal in the loss to France.

“It’s like anything in sport; it doesn’t matter if you’re a player or a head coach, you live by it and you die by it. We had set a plan

Burnaby Mountain Secondary students Brandon Becking and Austin Macdonald helped the Coquitlam A’s to the 2010 Little League junior world series in Taylor, Michigan for a third consecutive time.

The Burnaby pair were making their second straight appearance at the big show after leading the A’s to a third Canadian title for the club and second for both of them.

Coquitlam defeated Orleans, Ont. 7-6 in eight innings at the Canadian championships final in Lethbridge, Alta. last month and both Burnaby boys played pivotal roles.

Becking started the championship final game, going four and two-third innings before leaving the game with Coquitlam trailing Orleans by a 5-4 score.

However, Becking’s next at-bat erased any of the sting he may have felt after leaving the game, cranking a two-run home run to give the A’s a one-run lead.

Macdonald came into the game as the closer and pitched the remaining three and one-third innings, while striking out six Ontario batters.

The 15-year-old Becking finished the championships with a tournamentleading 17 strikeouts.

Macdonald, 14, opened the Canadian championships with two home runs in a 15-5 victory over Sydney Mines from Nova Scotia.

Macdonald finished the first round at the nationals with an impressive .529 batting average and 10 RBIs. Coquitlam advanced to the Canadian final with a 19-11 win over the Quebec champion from Montreal.

The A’s only loss at the nationals was an 8-7 loss to host Lethbridge.

At the World Series, the A’s all-stars finished with a 4-1 record.

Former Express coach goes back to school Simon Fraser University’s club hockey team has brought former B.C. Hockey League head coach Dave McLellan on board.

McLellan, who was let go by the former junior A Burnaby Express at the end of last season, has five years of BCHL experience under his belt,

including a Canadian junior hockey championship title as an assistant coach with the club in 2006.

McLellan saw his first action behind the SFU bench against his former team, the now Coquitlam Express, in an exhibtion game played Friday (after NOW deadlines).

Christine Sinclair shared in FC Gold Pride’s recordsetting win in Women’s Professional Soccer Saturday.

The Burnaby striker scored her ninth goal of the campaign and garnered her league-leading eighth assist on teammate Marta’s second goal of the game in a 6-1 victory over the Atlanta Beat on Aug. 28.

Sinclair was one of five players to score in the onesided win for the Pride, who clinched the regular season championship title earlier last month.

FC Pride’s six-goal performance broke numerous league records, including five goals in one half of play, total goals in a game and largest margin of victory.

Sinclair’s unassisted goal came in the 88th minute of play.

Former Vancouver Whitecap Tiffeny Milbrett opened the scoring for the Pride just before half time.

Clan men take 2009 championship soccer squad to NCAA Div. II Tom Berridge sports editor

Simon Fraser University’s successful men’s soccer team will take a relatively unchanged lineup into its debut season in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference.

The Clan made it all the way to the final four at the NAIA national championships last season, posting a school record 20 wins along the way.

In 2009, SFU won its first-ever independent region championship before being knocked out in the semifinals of the small college national tournament by eventual champion Lindsey Wilson.

The biggest loss this season for the Clan is the graduation of NAIA player of the year Colin Streckmann of Burnaby, who finished second on the team with 23 points.

The Clan will rely on leading scorer Alex Hanne, senior Sang Hwang and redshirt sophomore Roman Doutkevich up front. Seniors Carson Gill and Liam Miller of Burnaby will also be expected to contribute.

“It’s tough to lose someone who was the NAIA player of the year,” Clan head coach Alan Koch said of Streckmann in a school press release.

“We feel that two our our new recruits, Mike Winter of Vancouver and Anders Tetlie of Norway, can fill his void. We also have Juan Sanchez of Colombia and Manvir Brar from Ontario, who red-shirted last year and will be able to contribute this year.”

On the back end, SFU will retain the services of defenders Max Baessato, Anthony DiNicolo and first-team all-conference all-star Helge Neumann. New recruit Derek Bassi is also expected to step into the

lineup.

First team all-conference Hide Ozawa, fresh off an impressive six-shutout freshman season, has the inside track in goal. He will be pushed by California transfer Sheldon Steenhuis and last year’s backup J.D. Blakley.

“Our expectations this year are the same as always; win the next game,” said Koch, the 2009 regional coach of the year. “That has always been our goal and we feel we have the team to get there.”

SFU opened its season on Thursday against the University of Victoria.

The Clan will play in the annual Challenge Cup match against rival University of B.C. on Sept. 12.

SFU’s first match in the NCAA Division II conference is on Sept. 23 against Montana State UniversityBillings at home.

Mountie fourth at bantam nats

Golfer third at juvenile champs Wyatt Racette of Burnaby placed third in the B.C. juvenile boys’ gold championships at Glen Meadows Golf and Country Club on Vancouver Island Aug. 19.

Racette carded a three-over-par 219 to finish two strokes out of the runnerup spot held by Stuart Macdonald of Vancouver.

Curtis Chan of Richmond ran away with the juvenile boys’ title, firing a sizzling 10-under-par 206 in the three-day competition.

Racette, who plays out the Marine Drive course in Vancouver, opened with a par-72 followed by a 73 and a 74.

Racette had a high degree of difficulty on the par-four holes, shooting a plus-12 over the three days of competition.

On the longer par-five holes Racette did much better, coming home with a total seven-under score.

Racette had one eagle, 10 birdies and 28 pars in the 54-hole provincial tournament.

Lucas Gatto of Burnaby opened with a one-over 73 but had difficulty in the second round, ballooning to an 84, which dropped him from the leaders group. Gatto finished at 233 tied for 23rd overall.

Many of the girls began playing together when the team was called the Ravens.

The Ravens won the under-11 North District Cup four seasons ago, but it has been pressed to replicate that feat as the Reign.

“We’re still thinking about that last year because most of the teams we were playing against are planning on going Metro,”

added Ally Fabian, a 13year-old Glenbrook Middle School student. “When I think of the Reign, I think of tough competition and comparing ourselves with the other teams with skills and ball handling and things.”

But Glenbrook forward Naomi Noda has a somewhat differing outlook on the new season.

“I’m excited because our team is a little bigger now.

There’s more people, more travelling, which I think is more fun, and we can learn more soccer skills,” Noda said. “I think it makes our chances better. Our team has been together, we’ve

developed. We know our teammates and our weaknesses. It makes it easier to compete, I guess.”

If the question of competing was ever an issue, it would have been quickly dispelled last season when the Reign won their division at the international Mayor’s Cup tournament in Las Vegas.

Members of the team also had success in beach soccer this summer, winning the Beach Blast fiveon-five in the under-14 division back in July.

The Reign is heading south to Seattle this weekend for the annual Starfire tourney over Labour Day.

The B.C. champions dropped a 7-3 decision in the bronze-medal final. Bott had two atbats but failed to get on base.

Ontario scored all the runs it needed in the top of the first inning, scoring four runs on three hits, including a twoout, two-run single by Travis Seabrooke.

B.C. placed first in Pool A standings with a 4-0 record after round robin play, including an 8-2 victory over Ontario on Saturday.

The Mounties lost their semifinal 3-0 to Saskatchewan.

MOTORING BMW 7-Series sedan at the top of the luxury market the 750Li? Possibly, if you’re willing to spend a lot more. For an extra $15,700, the ActiveHybrid 7 brings fuel-saving hybrid technology to the 7-Series, whereas the $186,000 760Li swaps in a 6.0L V12 engine for staggering performance.

But the question remains: where are you sitting?

While the environmentally conscious will appreciate the hybrid’s 10.2 litres/100 km fuel efficiency (combined city and highway), the V12 seems a bit unnecessary for a chauffeured vehicle. It makes more sense to stick with the 750Li and also pick up a Z4 roadster, or – if you’re so inclined – donate the extra $70,000 to a worthy cause.

I drove the latest 750Li across Los Angeles and San Diego and came away completely impressed. It’s one of the greatest luxury sedans on the market.

s luxury cars go, it might be impossible to do better than the 2011 BMW 7-Series sedan, which offers one of the most complete and satisfying experiences of any vehicle on the road. The only question is, where are you sitting?

If you’re behind the wheel most of the time, then the base 750i is all you’ll need and want, boasting a ton of features and excellent performance at a “reasonable” price (for this class of car) of $108,600. However, if you’re more likely to be found relaxing in the rear seats while someone else drives, that just won’t do – you’re going to want to spend an extra $8,000 for the long-wheelbase 750Li, which increases the wheelbase and rear passenger space by 14 centimetres. At that point, the 7-Series isn’t just a luxury car – it’s a limousine.

The 750Li maintains the curves of its muchmaligned predecessor but steps back from the odd

and unsettling proportions to take on a shape and profile more in line with past 7-Series designs.

With all of the extra wheelbase length going into the rear seats, the 750Li has extremely long rear doors that open very wide.

It’s an imposing vehicle with a strong stance and attractive lines, though the standard-length 750i’s proportions are more pleasing to the eye.

BMW’s iDrive all-in-one controller gets better with every redesign and now includes dedicated buttons for oft-used functions, but the benefits are still debatable.

GPS worked great, and it even rerouted me when the traffic was busy using “real-time” traffic info.

There are too many cool features to mention, but some of the most notable include adaptive LED brakelights that glow brighter when more braking force is applied, and options such as airplanelike reading lamps for the rear seats, the Night Vision system, massaging front and rear seats, and headsup display with integrated navigation prompts.
