Study ranks local health region at the bottom – but what do the results mean? Andrew Fleming staff reporter

TheFraserHealthAuthority scored the lowest marks in Canada for its size category, according to a recent report. Wallace Lockhart of the University of Regina studied statistics ranking quality of care, access to services and patient satisfaction to analyze 45 different health regions across the country – 30 regions representing health regions with populations of 200,000 or more, and 15 regions representing health regions with fewer than 200,000 people. In the larger category, the combined health region for BurnabyandNewWestminster came dead last. Abbotsford and Chilliwack, also represented by the Fraser Health Authority, combined to take the third-to-last place, coming in 28th out of 30. Red Deer, Alta. came in 29th. The New Brunswick city of Moncton was the overall winner, followed by Regina, Victoria, Ottawa and Nanaimo. Lockhart, an accounting professor in the university’s school of business, was able to obtain the patient-satisfaction

A group that helps young aboriginal moms with housing in Burnaby is getting a financial boost from the federal government. Aunt Leah’s Independent Lifeskills Society is receiving $666,500 through the Government of Canada’s homelessness partnering strategy. Aunt Leah’s runs a transitional hous-

ing program that provides a safe place for young aboriginal moms who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. About eight to 10 moms go through the program each year. The federal funding means the organization can buy the home it was renting. “This purchase will ensure that vulnerable young mothers always have support and a home to return to,” said Gale Stewart, executive director of Aunt Leah’s. “Our government is giving a hand up

to Canadians with housing needs and is helping those seeking to break free of the cycle of poverty and homelessness in Burnaby,” said Senator Yonah Martin in a press release. Aunt Leah’s has headquarters in New Westminster but runs the transitional housing program in Burnaby and has other projects all over the Lower Mainland. Charlford House celebrates the big 4-0 Burnaby-based recovery house celebrates 40 years of helping women Andrew Fleming staff reporter

Turning 40 is always kind of a big deal, and it’s no different for the Charlford House Society, a Burnaby non-profit organization that provides help for women struggling with addiction. Located on a quiet, tree-lined suburban street near the foot of Burnaby Mountain, Charlford House began as a safe haven for just three women in 1970 and now regularly houses 15 at a time. The non-profit has helped thousands of women get back on their feet over the past four decades and will be marking the milestone this Saturday with a grand reunion picnic at Barnet Marine Park. “We are expecting a turnout from across all the years,” said executive director Patricia LaNauze. “I’m looking forward to seeing some old faces for sure.” Recovery from drug or alcohol addiction can often be a lifelong battle, and so the society generally keeps in close contact with women who have completed the three-month program, which provides life skills, relapse prevention strategies, professional counselling, peer mentoring and support to help make a transition back to society. LaNauze said that she hopes that many of the women who left the facility early will also show up. “It will be an opportunity hopefully, as well, to reconnect with women who may have gone

over the years.” LaNauze added that the picnic, the group’s very first public event, is also open to supporters and other members of the public. A Facebook page supporting the event already had 67 confirmed guest at the NOW’s press deadline, with 79 still unconfirmed.

LaNauze says she is packing enough food for well over a hundred people. “Everybody you see at the picnic is not necessarily someone who’s been through the house. There aren’t going to be big signs saying ‘I’m in recovery’ or ‘I’m not,’” she said with a laugh.

Slow ride: Construction related to the Gateway project – which is twinning the Port Mann Bridge and widening the Trans-Canada Highway – means speed limit changes on Highway 1 starting Monday.

You may want to slow down on Highway 1 in Burnaby – for the next three years. Construction for the Gateway project means speed limits on Highway 1 will be reduced from 100 kilometres per hour to 80, starting Monday, July 19. Highway 1 is being widened and the interchanges are being upgraded all along the stretch through Burnaby. The 80 km/h speed limit will be in effect from Grandview Highway in Burnaby to 208th Street in Langley. The construction will last about three years. Project spokesperson Max Logan says people don’t really need to plan an alter-

nate route. The reduced speed limits won’t have much effect since people are often stuck in traffic anyway. “For commuters, during peak times it would be unusual for them to reach the previously posted speed limit of 100,” he said. New speed limit signs will be posted, and drivers are asked to use caution when travelling through construction zones, where traffic fines double. The $3-billion Gateway project is a public-private partnership between the provincial government and the Kiewit/Flatiron General Partnership. Gateway proponents say the project will reduce congestion by widening the highway, twinning the Port Mann Bridge and introducing a rapid bus service.

Sixty per cent plan to spend less time at movies or the theatre, 55 per cent plan to buy fewer newspapers or magazines, and 49 per cent indicated they will pay fewer visits to the dry cleaner.

Whether those plans last past the first few weeks of cash register shock over the HST remains to be seen. But it’s clear that something about the tax – that it applies to so many items, that it’s coming at a time when people already feel overtaxed or even that it was implemented in a dishonest way – has shaken up B.C. politics. What we’ll all be watching for is to see if that translates into a change at the ballot box. Only time will tell.

Ah, the announcements in the recent papers, The Vancouver Sun and the Burnaby NOW, trumpeting the claim of new doctors imminent for B.C., and politicians seeking prominence with taking up the cause, or getting exposure-ops with the claim. I am a local physician and would have been more impressed if this was news to be shortly a reality, but for the individual amongst the touted 250,000 British Columbians without a family physician this is little comfort yet, perhaps in another five years might they find relief. The shortage of physicians is more a world phenomenon, and with Canada “recruiting” from other

The enigma and dilemma is a true “Gordian” knot for those aware of the intricacies involved, including provincial/national regulatory colleges and universities and their efforts. Nobody speaks much of the short-sightedness of previous governments in cutting back medical school enrolments, despite the challenges to their efforts by the physician community. One might consider limiting the shortage by increasing efficiency, increasing capacity and trusting in the increasing numbers of graduates. At my personal level, I see amongst issues, the

Patients check in with me to verify medications prescribed to them (not yet taken) after a visit to the emergency room; patients whose nurse practitioner cannot have her signature honoured on a disability certificate but needs my MD signature (guess who is legally responsible if the outcome is not satisfactory? Although I had only that one visit with the patient regarding the disability, and the pressure by the patient on his time for me to “sign off” the certificate); specialist offices who ask GP offices to call the patient for appointment details of the referral being scheduled (downloading their office time) or asking GPs to arrange the special investigation, or X-rays of their preference, not satisfied with what we might have already done (shifting responsibilities and time.) Demands for second opinions, or specialist referrals when the level of concern is less serious leads to increasing wait times. To name a few, these might be for acne, chest pain, headaches, back pains. (Isn’t a neurosurgeon – my preference – a specialist enough and a further “back specialist” likely not helpful?) Front-line medicine is one of triage, sorting out the simpler from the more complex, the urgent from the non-urgent, and the primary care physician should be trusted in his experience and training to do some preliminary investigations and care (I call it “homework”) before expedited referrals. I cannot help think wait times would benefit. Leaving some thoughts to ponder. Dr. John de Couto, Burnaby

No. Perhaps it was back during … no, that was six per cent, and I recall being ecstatic. No, let’s see, was it that time in Fort Nelson when … no, it couldn’t have been that far back. Hell, that was a non-union contract. Yes, yes, I remember now! How could I forget? I never, ever got a 17 per cent increase in all my what … 45 years of working. I hope the mayor, councillors and various city managers, committee members etc., can get by on their well-deserved wages. Pot benefits outweigh any potential dangers Dear Editor:

Re: Young, chronic pot smokers more at risk, Burnaby NOW, July 14. Why are we trying to prevent marijuana use? Even when smoked, the benefits far outweigh any dangers. Pot reduces stress, it lowers blood pressure, relieves anxiety, is an anti-inflammatory, and recent science out of Saskatchewan shows how pot actually stimulates tissue growth in certain sections in the brain. Other science shows how pot shrinks tumors and prevents cancer. Look it up. All this hokum about mental illness has been exaggerated and repeatedly debunked. Face it – marijuana isn’t illegal because it is “dangerous,” it is illegal because it presents stiff market competition to dozens of less effective medicines. The public is being bamboozled on an epic scale.

system could survive him. And what could we have here instead of a queen (or king) to watch over her (his) humble, little children? In reality, everything the queen could do for us is already done by our Governor General – who supposedly represents the Queen Herself, but is in fact chosen by the prime minister in consultation with the Privy Council. The only royalty in the

equation is purely symbolic. And the current Gov.Gen. – as evidenced by her botching of the parliamentary proroguing that has become all the fashion of late – is a pretty good argument for a complete change to the system. How about we elect our Senate? And the head of the resultant Upper Chamber is named Chancellor (or some-such) and takes on the symbolic role of interpreting the constitution for the prime

minister? Or how about a brave new American Idol knockoff – Canadian Idolatry – in which prospective symbolic heads of state show us from week to week how classy and regal they can be, and everybody gets to phone in their choices (99 cents per vote, to help fund the office)? Robbery suspect turns himself in

The suspect behind a Burnaby bank robbery last week has turned himself in to police. The suspect was arrested after surrendering to North Vancouver RCMP the day after a robbery at the CIBC Bank at 4101 Hastings St. on July 8. He is also accused of robbing two banks in North Vancouver on July 7

and June 29. Police say the man left evidence at all three crime scenes, including being captured on video surveillance and leaving his fingerprints. No weapons were produced and nobody was hurt in the robberies. “Having noticed similarities in the three robberies, and having consid-

ered the physical evidence gathered, investigators were able to identify (him) as the prime suspect in all three incidents,” said Cpl. Peter DeVries of the North Vancouver RCMP. The suspect surrendered to police and is being held in custody until his first court appearance on July 19. afleming@burnabynow.com

Burnaby was hit by unseasonably heavy winds on Monday, although damage wasn’t nearly as bad as it was in Vancouver or the Sunshine Coast. “We had three trees down, all about 50-footers,” said assistant director of parks Don Hunter. “We had a lot of branches and debris that came down, and it took us about a day-and-a-half to clean it up. Most of the problems were in North Burnaby since a

lot of the wind comes up from the Inlet.” The windstorm, which Environment Canada said reached nearly 70 km/h, knocked power lines onto the Barnet Highway, forcing officials to close the route to traffic and causing 1,600 B.C. Hydro customers in Burnaby, Coquitlam and Port Moody to lose power. Hunter said there was no reported property damage. Burnaby RCMP has released a composite sketch of the man suspected of sexually assaulting a 15year-old girl in her apartment building last month. The girl was assaulted in the building near Metrotown SkyTrain station on June 30 at about 3 p.m. She was walking home with a friend when a man followed them into the building, waiting until the victim was alone to grab her in what police described as a sexual manner. The man then fled. The girl was not physically hurt in the incident. Burnaby RCMP has issued a description of the suspect. He is approximately 20 years old, possibly Asian and has facial acne. He is between 5-9 and 5-11. He has a slim to medium build. He did not speak with an accent. The man had a crooked front left tooth. He wore

Volunteer Grandparents is hosting a book launch at McGill library branch on July 24. The book, Growing from the Roots, features stories and experiences of those involved in Volunteer Grandparents, both young and old. The Burnaby organization, which started in 1973, is focused on bridging the generation gap. It’s a bit like Big Sisters, only they match the elderly with kids who need an older mentor because their grandparents aren’t around. The group also sends volunteers into schools to read to the kids and help teachers. The volunteers get more connected to their communities, and the kids get knowledge from a generation they may be connected to. Tucked away in a shady condo complex in Burnaby’s Cariboo Heights neighbourhood live top guns Dennis and Karen Robinson. They are among the world’s best when it comes to fast draw, old-fashioned gunslinging usually reserved for John Wayne films. “It’s single action: one bullet each time you move the hammer,” Dennis explains. “It’s cowboy. It’s western. We’re (like Marshal) Matt Dillon,” says Karen, referring to the fictional character from Gunsmoke. And while the Robinsons may not have free range of Dodge City, their Burnaby condo is suitable enough for a fast draw demonstration. The guns they use are replicas of the classic type you would expect to see in a western film. They shoot one bullet at a time, and the cylinder holds six. At home, they try not to flash the pistols around too much in case the neighbours get alarmed. “Our sport is They strap vintage-style, thick leather holsters to their thighs and unlock very safe.” their pistols from a secure box. In the pink family room of their KAREN ROBINSON Burnaby gunslinger home, Dennis demonstrates his draw. He stands readied, with one hand hovering above the holster, arm tense while he waits for the verbal cue: “Shooter on the line. Shooter. Set.” In roughly 41/100ths of a second, he whips out the pistol and fires an incredibly loud blank, filling the room with the acrid smell of gunpowder. Karen is equally impressive; her average time is about 45/100ths of a second. This April, at the World Fast Draw Association’s annual banquet, Dennis and Karen were presented with the “Top Gun Gold Buckle Awards” for their quick draws. Karen earned fifth allaround top gun title, while Dennis garnered third in the men’s division. In competitions, they wait for a light to come on, signalling when they can draw, and they aim for a target hooked up to a timer. They never use real bullets, just blanks and wax versions, and they never point their pistols at anyone. Accuracy is just as important as speed since shooters get penalized if they miss their targets. They also stage one-on-one shootouts, like in the Old West, but they shoot off at an angle for safety reasons although it looks straight on to the audience. “Our sport is very safe,” Karen says. “Safer than the golf range, that’s for sure,” Dennis quips. Dennis, now 72, and Karen, 65, have been gunslinging for decades. Dennis is one of the original founders of the Thunderbird Fast Draw Club, the largest and longest running fast draw club in the world. The Robinsons have appeared on TV, promoting their Guns Page 16

Who’ll win the book contest?

A flood of unpublished Canadian writers are keeping their fingers crossed that they will be among the winning authors in Simon Fraser University’s first ever First Book

Competition. Writers from as far away as Italy and New Zealand submitted entries before the May 31 deadline. The Writer’s Studio, a certificate in creative writing program within SFU continuing studies, created the competition to celebrate the studio’s 10th anniversary. The competition is the first in Canada to open up publishing doors for unpublished Canadian writers in three genres: creative non-fiction, fiction and poetry. Three winners will be announced at the October 2010 Vancouver International Writers Festival. In 2011, Anvil Press will publish the winning manuscript in each category. Funds raised from the June, 2010 campaign will support scientists and clinicians at the Vancouver Prostate Centre. This team of some of the brightest research minds in Canada has been studying the molecular and cellular events involved in the process whereby cancers become resistant to hormone withdrawal therapy of prostate cancer patients. They have found that a protein called the “androgen receptor” is critical for this type of treatment resistance and that by eliminating this protein they can cause many tumours to die. Recently, they have had an exciting breakthrough discovery of an entirely new class of drugs that can effectively inhibit, and in some cases, eliminate this protein. With the support of Prostate Cancer Canada and Safeway, they can continue to focus exclusively on further developing this promising research. Radio accolades

The National Campus and Community Radio Association singled out CJSF for three national level awards. CJSF is Simon Fraser University’s radio station headquartered on top of Burnaby Mountain. Ryan Fletcher received the Local Talent Development award for bringing three to four

musicians in studio for a live session every week. Fletcher also works as the station’s on-air training coordinator. Magnus Thyvold received a lifetime achievement award for extraordinary contributions to community radio and the campus radio association. His works includes creating a radio association program exchange, where people can upload, download and share their radio

Resource centre demolished The Burnaby Heights Resource Centre is no more. Demolition of the building began at the end of March, with the removal of hazardous materials. An old oil tank was also removed before demolition began. The removal of hazardous waste, gypsum board and salvageable materials took about six weeks, according to a Burnaby city staff report. Demolition of the south

wing began in mid-May, and additional asbestos was discovered at that point. Because of the need to plan the removal of additional asbestos, as well as the cost, the project timeline has been extended by four to five weeks. The demolition and deconstruction of the building on Willingdon Avenue is expected to be completed by the end of August.

The project, which started last March, has stalled because of delayed delivery of supplies, the report stated. Changes to the BC Fire Code Require All Residential Buildings to Have Working Smoke Alarms According to the US Fire Administration, in 2006 fire killed more Americans than all natural disasters combined. The Council of Canadian Fire Marshals and Fire Commissioners reported that residential property fires remain an area of upmost concern in Canada. In 2002, residential fires resulted in 250 deaths or approximately 82% of the nation’s fire fatalities. Many of these deaths could have been prevented by the proper installation and maintenance of inexpensive smoke detectors. In fact, changes to the BC Fire Code require that every residential building built prior to March 31, 1979 have smoke alarms installed by May 1, 2010. Newer homes were already covered by the smoke alarm requirements that were introduced into the BC Building Code in 1979. This new adjustment to the BC Fire Code will improve public safety by extending the requirements to private dwellings, including those constructed prior to the introduction of the BC Building Code requirements in 1979. Landlords also need to ensure that all of their rental properties comply with the law. Well maintained and properly placed smoke detectors are your first line of defence. What else do you need to know to help protect your home and family in the event of fire? •

Install at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and outside each sleeping area

•

Smoke rises so detectors should be mounted on ceilings or high on walls (follow the manufacturer’s instructions)

•

Avoid mounting smoke detectors near windows, doors, fans or ducts where drafts may affect their operation

for a better insurance experience!

•

Never disconnect your smoke detector or remove the batteries (except to change them)

•

Test smoke alarms once a month

•

Replace the batteries in your smoke alarm once a year (sooner if the unit indicates the battery power is low)

•

Keep smoke detectors clean and dust-free

•

Replace smoke alarms that are over 10 years old

•

Develop and practice a ﬁre escape plan with your family

It’s more refined, more stylish, more sophisticated, more … everything. It’s a traditional, truck-based SUV with a tough outer body covering a tougher underbody. Toyota offers five different SUVs, reaching out to a wide variety of consumers. The popular RAV4 competes in the compact segment, while the fullsize Sequoia is exactly the opposite. The Highlander is the friendly people mover, and the FJ Cruiser

hange has come to the long-lived Toyota 4Runner, and it’s long overdue. That’s not a criticism of last year’s model, which has held up quite well – it’s just that last year’s model came to us in 2003. Change wasn’t so much inevitable as it was necessary. After all, when you have a customer base as loyal as 4Runner owners are, you don’t want to keep them waiting too long. Now in its fifth gen-

harkens back to the supertough FJ40 4x4. For its part, the 4Runner combines the size, passenger/cargo space and price of the Highlander with the off-roading prowess of the FJ Cruiser. While the Highlander is designed purely for city use and doesn’t fare too well off the beaten path, the 4Runner is at home both on the street and in the wild. Similarly, the 4Runner provides space and convenience that the FJ Cruiser wasn’t designed to offer. What the 4Runner doesn’t bring to the table

are the manners of the car-based Highlander. Eschewing a unitized body for the classic bodyon-frame design, it prizes agility and ground clearance over handling and comfort. It’s intended for people who miss the precrossover SUVs that were essentially pickup trucks with extra seats. Viewed in this light, the new 4Runner is exceptionally welldesigned, but it’s not for those who are looking for true car-like crossovers.

Design

This might be the first

4Runner that could be described as imposing. The tall SUV has a rugged, hard-edged exterior that serves it well, with subtly bulging wheel wells that provide a muscular stance. Existing 4Runner owners will appreciate the ongoing evolution of the styling. The proportions are largely the same as previous models, and details such as the roof rails are still there. You can even still get the optional hood scoop. The interior is a huge improvement over the previous generation. The upright dashboard is all

truck, with no-nonsense buttons and switches that reinforce the 4Runner’s tough demeanour. Overall, the new 4Runner feels like a much higher-quality vehicle, and it should considering the improvements we’ve seen in materials and manufacturing over the past decade. This is particularly noticeable in the cabin, which gains a degree of sophistication missing from previous models.

and sportier, with better handling and ride quality. That being said, it does what most body-onframe vehicles do, diving forward when you brake and shaking noticeably in turns.

Giro di Burnaby on the road back to 2011 B.C. Superweek will have a third jewel in its crown in 2011. The highly popular and competitive cycling criterium – the Giro di Burnaby – will be making its return to the streets of Burnaby Heights next year as part of the Superweek series that also has stops in Surrey and Delta. Many of Superweek’s top riders are excited to welcome back the popular Giro di Burnaby for 2011, pushing the total number of races to seven for next summer, and the total purse to $55,000, making it one of Canada’s biggest weeks of bike racing. The Giro di Burnaby, a fast-

paced evening criterium through Burnaby Heights, will take place in the middle of B.C. Superweek – between the $25,000, three-race Tour de Delta and the $15,000, three-race Tour de White Rock. The Giro di Burnaby, which ran from 2006 to 2008 before running into funding problems, has a minimumthree-yearcommitment through 2013, with a purse of at least $15,000, thanks to renewed title sponsorship from local businesses Embassy Development, Appia Development and Palladio Jewellers. Andrew Pinfold, a long-time pro from North Vancouver, who

now rides for U.S.-based United Healthcare Pro Cycling, was excited to hear the news – and not just because he finally gets to defend his 2008 Giro di Burnaby title. “This is awesome news,” said Pinfold. “Having a race midweek between Delta and White Rock anchors the series as it makes B.C. Superweek even more attractive for professional teams to send riders up for the entire series.” Pinfold hopes the return of the popular Burnaby race will spur on others to add races – and lead to another rebirth of the prestigious Tour de Gastown, a

race that listed Lance Armstrong among its alumni before folding in 2008. “This proves that bike racing is as popular as ever in the Lower Mainland, and I hope encourages other municipalities to put on races,” he said. “With the addition of Burnaby there are still three nights available for races. I think everyone would love to see a return of Gastown and perhaps a race on the North Shore or Kitsilano.” Born from the idea of Burnaby councillor Pietro Calendino, the Giro di Burnaby – named as a tribute to the area’s Italian com-

munity and to the world famous Giro d’Italia – made its debut in 2006, attracting 7,000 spectators to the historic area of Hastings Street known as Burnaby Heights. The following year, it joined the B.C. Superweek series, attracting more than 200 riders to the next two races and producing a list of winners that includes some of North America’s best. B.C. plays for bronze at Canada Cup

The Simon Fraser University men’s hockey program will be calling the Bill Copeland Sports Centre home this season. The Clan, which will play a 16-game home schedule at the 2,000-seat arena, plays in the B.C. Intercollegiate Hockey League. “This move coincides with a period of tremendous growth for our program,” said SFU general manager Jeff Dubois in a school press release. “The fact that a number of WHL (Western Hockey League) and BCHL (B.C. Hockey League) graduates have committed to join our team this fall illustrates the high level of university hockey that will be played at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre this season.” SFU is the reigning intercollegiate league champions. The provincial title was the second for the program and represented its third appearance in the championship final in as many seasons. The men’s hockey team was revived in 2004 as a recreational club sport and has grown into a highly competitive scholarship

SFU competes in the seven-team B.C. intercollegiate league that includes the University of Victoria, the University of the Fraser Valley, Trinity Western University, Okanagan College, Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops and Selkirk College from Castlegar. The Clan will play a 34game schedule in 2010/11, including 24 regular season and 10 exhibition games. SFU’s season opening game will begin on Friday, Sept. 3 with an exhibition game against the junior Coquitlam Express. Former Burnaby Minor and Burnaby Winter Club player Mark Coletta, who competed in three NCAA Frozen Four finals with Division III Plattsburgh State University from 1998 to 2002, is the team’s head coach. Coletta was named the BCIHL’s coach of the year for the past two seasons. Dale Lupul joins the Clan as an assistant coach this season. The club will hold a community event at noon on Tuesday, July 27 at the Bill Copeland centre to introduce the team and make an announcement regarding season tickets.

Not long ago, Marco took up lacrosse as a peewee and has been on an A team for the past three seasons, including as an assistant captain of the A2 midget team this year. “He’s our team leader,” said A2 lacrosse head coach Dirk Rachfall, who was unaware of Marco’s impairment. “When he’s out of our lineup for whatever reason we surely miss him.” A case in point was during the pre-provincial midget A2 playdowns against Coquitlam. He missed Game 1 because of hockey commitments in Whistler, and the team lost 7-1. With him back in the lineup for Game 2, New Westminster narrowly lost 6-5 while Marco contributed two

goals to the effort. “I’ve been doing pretty good,” Marco said. “I’m a bit nicer to my teammates, and I don’t really complain to my coach as much as I used to. I just deal with it and play past it.” Marco is also involved in hockey as an on-ice official. Last season, Marco and his older brother Nico were both recipients of referee awards handed out by their home association. Marco won a referee development award for one week of free referee schooling at a camp in Osoyoos. He also helps Leung coach a peewee spring hockey team. “It’s just nice to be around the ice,” Marco said.

Pat had a wonderful group of friends that include Chris Black, her closest and dearest friend, Margo Mudry, Elsie Anderson, Marlene Barnes and Irene Dennis. Pat and the ladies spent countless hours at the Vancouver Playhouse, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Massey Theatre and Century House. Pat also took joy in league bowling, relaxing in Comox, watching Canucks games and traveling. Pat grew up in Vancouver and worked for Woodward’s; she spent many years in Burnaby before moving to New Westminster in 1990 where she enjoyed her retirement. Pat was interred at Forest Lawn in Burnaby following a private burial service. We would like to extend our gratitude to the doctors, nurses and staff at VGH that treated Pat, to the staff at Sunrise Senior Living for their wonderful care and to Tish and Sophie for all their visits. Over the years, in order to deal with personal issues and past hurts have you had to focus on painful memories and circumstances to the point that they have become the focal point of your life story? Has one bad incident, experience or decision now tainted or overshadowed what was before a positive and uplifting story? I’m fortunate in my work to support people as they re-evaluate and reinterpret their life and career stories and as they begin writing the next chapter of their lives from a perspective of choice and freedom.
