Buyers find mice in bread? Two families in Burnaby say they took home loaves of bread that had stowaway mice in them Jennifer Moreau staff reporter

The Burnaby NOW has received two complaints of store-bought bread loaves that appear to have been chewed through by mice within a week of each other. The first case, reported by Vincent Singh, involved a loaf of Wonder bread bought from Zellers in Brentwood Town Centre on May 2. Singh is convinced that a mouse had burrowed inside the loaf of bread and was brought into his home from Zellers. According to Singh, his mom bought the bread on May 2, brought it home and put it in the pantry of their Brentwood area home. Later that day, his wife made a sandwich and discovered a hole in the bread. There was a hole in the bag and in the middle of the loaf. “I opened up the pantry and saw the mouse,” Singh said. The mouse escaped and hid in his oven, which Singh proceeded to damage as he killed the mouse. Singh said he’s never had a rodent problem in his home and is insistent the mouse was a stowaway from Zellers. “There’s no way a mouse would have eaten a loaf of bread, from front to back, in four hours,” he said. “It was living in the loaf.” Singh called Zellers to complain. Blooming art: Melinda Yong, the city’s environmental technician, with one of the eco-sculptures that’s growing at the city’s greenhouse. The sculptures will be on display at Central Park on May 29 and 30.

Living art blooms in city Spring gardens are blooming, and soon Burnaby’s gigantic beasts will follow. The city’s eco-sculptures will be on display in Central Park next weekend. “The eco-sculpture program in general is a celebration of horticulture, art and the environment,” said Melinda Yong, the city’s environmental technician. “People see these things and are fascinated.” The sculptures are giant frames in the shapes of animals. soil and then covered with plants. The creatures start to take on their forms as the plants bloom. The sculptures will be on display in Central Park for anyone interested in seeing them all in one spot before the city places them throughout Burnaby. This year, there will be horses, bees, bears, eagles and salmon, scattered throughout the city. The horses go to the Burnaby Village Museum, the bees are from Century

Garden at Deer Lake, the bears from the Burnaby Mountain Golf Course, the eagles are from the Bill Copeland Sports Centre, and the salmon are from Southwest Marine Drive. Yong said the animals are chosen to highlight local environmental issues. To check out the eco-sculptures, visit Central Park Saturday, May 29 and Sunday, May 30. – Jennifer Moreau
