A total of 1,044 sales were processed on FVREB’s MLS in September, an increase of five per cent compared to 997 sales in August, however a decrease of 34 per cent compared to 1,590 sales in September of last year. The board received 2,411 new listings last month, a 15 per cent increase from August, yet a nine per cent decrease compared to September 2009. esidents of Lake Errock and other rural areas east of Mission marked for potential gravel mining spoke passionately about preserving habitats and water supplies, at the first consultation meeting on the province’s proposed Aggregate Pilot Program. More than 120 people packed Deroche Community Hall on Thursday night to have their say. Six years in the making, the APP proposes red, yellow and green zones for gravel extraction in the eastern Fraser Valley, with green being open for mining. Wendy Bales, director of Electoral Area C, is the only director on the Fraser Valley Regional District Board to not endorse the plan. It was to have avenues for significant public conflict resolution, but those aspects of the APP have been diluted as to become ineffectual, she said. Bales said some designated areas just don’t make sense from an ecological perspective, such as two significant salmon-bearing streams in the Harrison Mills area, and proposed setbacks are not enough to protect the waterways. She adds the current draft document still contains too many “loopholes and loose ends.” “It’s far too elastic. Hoogendoorn said that in reality, FHC directs 88 per cent of its donations to projects, while 12 per cent goes to administration. Its financial statements are at www.fhcanada.org. “Even with this blip in 2007, 2008, we still have an 88 per cent rate” of donations going to field work, said Hoogendoorn. Since the court story, no one has pulled their donations, although a few called for clarification. “It really hasn’t had a negative impact. In fact, we had a very strong start to October. People are familiar with the work that we do,” he said. Along with designated donations, FHC also accepts non-designated dollars that go to administrative costs. “More and more people understand if you want to run an organization in an efficient, effective manner, it costs money,” said Hoogendoorn.

People need to understand, MacDonald said, that they are not doing themselves any favours when they don’t report criminal activity. “We’ve got to go into this
recent Statistics Canada survey shows a continuing decline in the number of crimes being reported to police, a fact that does not surprise local law enforcement. According to the report, only 31 per cent of criminal incidents were relayed to police in 2009, down from 34 per cent in 2004, when the last survey was conducted. Const. Ian MacDonald said the national trend is a reflection of Abbotsford’s own. “It was only three or four weeks ago that we actually

Statistics showed 29 per cent of violent offences were put forward to police in 2009 with rates for household victimization highest at 36 per cent, but only 12 per cent for offences involving sexual assault. Citing APD statistics, MacDonald said reported sex offences in the city are up to 53 per cent from 42 per cent in 2009, and assaults remain even at 670 for both years.
Total violent crimes to date stand at 278, a 13 per cent drop from the 320 reported by this time last year. Domestic violence numbers remained flat, MacDonald said, with 391 cases last year compared to 383 cases so far in 2010. Sexual and domestic violence are areas where underreporting has a major impact on the community, and MacDonald said while this definitely skews statistics, it takes a lot of courage to report abuse. “There are people out there, and they’re not call-

The decision is part of a cost-cutting measure to balance its budget and to allocate the most funding possible to direct educational benefits, according to the university. “Each year as we plan our university budget, we are faced with the challenge of increasing costs combined with very minimal or no increase in our funding,” said UFV chief financial officer Jackie Hogan. “We are bound by government policy to cap tuition increases to CPI [consumer price index], and do not receive increases for inflation in our provincial gov-
ernment grant. We have to look for creative ways to reduce costs while maintaining the high-quality learning environment for which we are known.” UFV pays close to half a million dollars per year in transaction fees to credit card companies, Hogan said. The local institution isn’t the only university to take this step – the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University, Kwantlen University and Vancouver Island University are also making the change. Students can still pay for application fees, gradua-
tion fees, transcripts, and continuing studies course t u i t i o n f e e s w i t h c re d i t cards. They may also pay for the upcoming winter semester with a credit card if they pay the fees before Dec. 31. UFV will still accept creditcard payments from international students. James is safe . . . for now T he lingering doubts about NDP leader Carole James’ leadership that exist within her own party exploded into public view last week, but we’re still a long, long way from any real revolt aimed at replacing her at the helm. James booted Cariboo North MLA Bob Simpson from her caucus after more than a year’s worth of grumbling from the two-term politician. Simpson had clearly been unhappy for some time, and never seemed to get over being replaced as forestry critic after the last election. Simpson was mildly critical of James’ performance in her speech to the Union of B.C. Municipalities convention. (He wasn’t alone on that point; most observers, including this one, agreed with his assessment.) James asked him to apologize for his comments and when he refused, she expelled him from caucus. For James, it was simply the last straw in dealing with someone who was increasingly bold about his attacks on her leadership. I’m told she acted so firmly to head off what was expected to be a more open, public attack on her by Simpson down the road. As well, she’s sending a message to any would-be malcontents in her caucus: Don’t even think of challenging my leadership. She may have thought Simpson had left her no choice, but her aggressive action will inevitably energize those in her party

Oh, there are undoubtedly other NDP MLAs perhaps unhappy with James’ leadership or the direction the party is heading (Harry Lali, Michael Sather and Guy Gentner spring to mind). The far left-wingers think she’s too centrist, and decry her for wanting to reach out to the business community. There is a considerable dose of hypocrisy here. The same New Democrats who gleefully jump into bed with Bill Vander Zalm think it’s abhorrent to even talk to the business community. The only way James’ hold on the leadership would be sorely tested would be if one of the NDP’s “A-Team” MLAs openly challenged her. If someone like Mike Farnworth, Adrian Dix, John Horgan, Jenny Kwan, Katrine Conroy, Shane Simpson, Norm MacDonald, Bruce Ralston or Rob Fleming were to speak out, then James could find her in a very precarious situation. But I don’t see that happening. The fact is that where it counts most – within the key players of her caucus – James finds the core of her strength.
There are two more important factors at play here as well. First, there is no logical replacement waiting in the wings to take over should James be toppled, or if she quits on her own. There is no one – from within caucus, or from outside – who can make a credible argument that the party stands a better chance of winning in the 2013 election if they were leader. Second, James and her party are sailing along at the top of the polls right now, with a sizeable lead over the B.C. Liberals. The gap between the two parties will undoubtedly narrow as we approach the next election date – it always does – but it’s simply nutty for the NDP to start talking about changing leaders any time soon. However, it’s typical of that party for its diehard adherents to attack their leader, no matter where they stand with the public. Bob Skelly, Mike Harcourt, Glen Clark and Ujjal Dosanjh all had significant wounds from all kinds of knives plunged into their political backs by their own people. Carole James is discovering her party has not changed. She’ll continue to be attacked by her own folks right up until the next election – and afterwards as well, even if she wins. ■ Keith Baldrey is chief political cor-

or the past four years, October has been set aside as Small Business Month in B.C. The aim is to raise awareness of the large role that small businesses play in the province’s economy - a role that, collectively, stands in marked contrast to the size of the individual players. For instance, there were nearly 400,000 small businesses operating in B.C. in 2009. According to B.C. government statistics, that represented a three per cent increase over 2008, despite the relatively unhappy global economic climate that prevailed last year. Nearly 60 per cent of jobs in the province’s private sector are provided through small business operations - that’s nearly six out of every 10 people employed in the private sector throughout British Columbia. Furthermore, about one of every five workers in B.C. is self-employed, the highest rate of self-employment in Canada. The bottom line is that small businesses provide gainful employment to more than a million British Columbians. Abbotsford and Mission, like communities throughout B.C., are home to hundreds of small businesses, and to the entrepreneurs who make them and the entire province’s economy plough through tough times and grow when the climate is more amenable. Those entrepreneurs are your next-door neighbours, your friends, and probably number among the members of your family. They keep B.C. - and the people who call this province home - working. They’re worth celebrating, and the small businesses they operate are worth promoting through October.

Oh, what to do with doggy doo-doo?
Do ‘doo’ diligence, when you walk your dog, scoop the poop
T
his is one topic that is not generally considered polite conversation (especially at the dinner table) but must be addressed by every dog owner. What should you do with the droppings left behind by your pet? What are your options? First and foremost, you must scoop the poop when you are out walking your dog. Take two bags at least. The exercise may stimulate a second bowel movement. Scooping the poop is part of responsible pet ownership. It’s not fun. It’s not nice. But you have to do it. Trying to innocently look in the opposite direction does not fool anyone, least of all the neighbour upon whose lawn your dog is taking a dump. What should you use to pick up dog poop? If you are out walking your dog, carry bio-
degradable poop-scoop bags. Most of us are becoming more environmentally friendly. The grocery bags we have been using don’t degrade in the landfill or in the compost. There are alternatives and they need not be expensive. If you want an alternative to the purchased biodegradable bags, consider paper lunch bags, or recycled paper (newspapers) or toilet paper. If you are cleaning up the backyard, a designated shorthandled shovel and hoe work just fine, or you can get a fancy pooper scooper. If scooping your yard makes you gag, consider hiring one of the many poop-scooping services out there. They will come by on a schedule that is suitable to you and the size of your dog. Now that you have gathered your treasures, what do you do with them? Remember, that officially, doggy-doo does

The simplest form of composting is to dig a big pit (for example two to three feet wide and three feet deep) located away from any vegetable garden. Cover this with a lid. If you want to get fancy, the Internet has all sorts of dog poop composters available for purchase. You can even get worms for the composters to speed up the process but be aware that the de-worming products we give dogs to control parasites may kill at least some of the worms. A composter can handle the poop from an average-sized dog for four to six years with no odour. If you live in an apartment or condo, you can buy flushable doggy poop-scoop bags. They are made out of corn starch and dissolve in water. Some cities have gotten creative in their dog parks. As dog wastes break down, they release methane gas. These parks have special composters that collect the gas and use it to fuel lamps that light the park — a bright side to all crappy things that happen.

Aggregate mining is being planned in a high rainfall watershed area which is one of the few places where healthy runs of all seven species of salmon come to spawn. In the area where the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival is held annually, and where white-coated mountain goats roam, herons nest in groves, and the third largest population of over-wintering birds in North America – including trumpeter swans – swim with beaver, steelhead and cuthroat trout, massive siltration and destruction is imminent. Randy Hawes, Liberal MLA and minister of state for mining, is making enormous demands from the Harrison Mills area east of Mission near Deroche for gravel to complete the Gateway Project, the Canada Line, and paving over farmland, etc. Gravel extraction is planned from Deroche to Chehalis and into Chilliwack, with logging trucks and gravel trucks barreling up and down the Lougheed Highway, through agricultural and forested areas. I have suffered from depression for over two years now, but only recently sought treatment. When I went to my doctor, I learned that it would cost me more than $150 per hour to get psychological help. I find this ridiculous, considering I just finished applying for Employment Insurance under disability for depression, as I can no longer concentrate properly, or perform my job. Essentially, the government will give me money not to work, but will not provide assistance for me to get better. I realize that medications are covered by health insurance, but this is only a temporary solution (when it works at all). People need to realize that this is only a way of reducing symptoms. Like any other illness, depression must be

“Although consumers have 13 per cent fewer properties to look at in the Fraser Valley than they did in May, it remains a buyers’ market with a healthy selection, near-record low interest rates and stable prices,” explained Horn. “It’s important that both buyers and sellers recognize that as long as inventory levels continue to decline, there
is less downward pressure on pricing.” The benchmark price for Fraser Valley detached homes in September was $507,429, down 0.5 per cent compared to August and 3.3 per cent higher compared to $491,404 in September 2009. The benchmark price of Fraser Valley townhouses in September was $321,843, a

ometimes teens find themselves in risky situations when they’re out at night, or simply without a ride home, but they don’t want to call their parents for help. That’s where the Safe Ride Home program offered by Youth Unlimited can be a lifesaver. Young people aged 10 to 19 can call the ride program and get a free van ride out of potentially dangerous situations on weekends until 2:30 in the morning. The program has been in place for about 10 years, and recently gained a second vehicle, said YU executive director Dave Wiebe. Thanks to the generosity of local businessman Henry Rempel, Safe Ride Home has a new Honda Odyssey van. The Abbotsford Kiwanis Club also provides significant ongoing funding for the program, said Wiebe.
“In 2009, more than 1,000 teens used the service,” he said. “In most case, it’s like 1 a.m., it’s late, but their ride is drunk, or they are, and we take them directly home.” At times, however, the kids may find themselves in “some pretty hairy situations,” where they may be bullied at the corner store, or they’re with a group of kids and knives and guns get pulled out, said Wiebe.
Even the police will ask them to take teens home, he added. Youth Unlimited is a division of Youth for Christ, and for 30 years it has provided disadvantaged youth and families with caring relationships and developmental opportunities on mental, social, physical, emotional and spiritual levels, in the context of the teachings of Jesus Christ. The organization offers the Safe Ride Home program, counselling

services with a registered clinical counsellor, and the C-21 Youth Centre, where kids can meet in a safe place play foosball, pool, and other games. Along with evening drop-in times, YU also provides regular dinners where their volunteers, staff, and youth enjoy meals together. better. The 27-year-old Aldergrove Minor Hockey product officially signed an AHL contract with the Abbotsford Heat on Sept. 27, which was significant because he can now play back in Canada and close to home for the first time in his pro career.

Briefly Alums return to Columbia Place The annual Columbia Bible College alumni games rocked Columbia Place last week. The women’s basketball alums defeated the current ‘Cats 53-48. Alea Beaumont led the way for the alums with 17 points, while first year player Sharece Thouhtenhoofd led the ‘Cats with 21 points and six rebounds. The men’s basketball game turned out to be a classic. With 23 lead changes, no team had a lead of more than eight points. The current ‘Cats went ahead 93-92 with just over a minute when alum Kyle Boon drained a three-point shot to give his alumni team the 97-93 win. Boon led the alumni with 17 points, while Jon Schmidt, Nate Tiessen and Greg Neufeld all finished with 11 points. Steve Klassen led with nine rebounds. The young Bearcats squad was led by their lone returning player from last season, Chris Thompson who finished with 22 points. The ‘Cats did not back down and out rebounded the alumni 54-50. Chris Mader finished the game with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The ‘Cats had five players finish in double figures. The women’s volleyball game was a one-sided affair as the ‘Cats won handily over the alumni 3-0; 25-15, 25-14, 25-22. In men’s volleyball, the ‘Cats defeated the alumni 3-2 by scores 25-18, 18-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-12.
UFV cheerleading squad starting up
Cheerleaders are coming to the University of the Fraser Valley this fall. The soon-to-be-formed cheerleading squad, coached by former Valley Stars Kaitlyn Yates and Brooke Ostendorf, both now UFV students, will rev up the crowds at Cascades’ home basketball games and compete in two regional cheerleading competitions this coming school year. Open tryouts for the coed team started last week and will continue on Oct. 13 and Oct. 20 at the Valley Stars Athletics Gym (3-34334 Forrest Terrace, Abbotsford). Tryouts and practice will start at 4:30 p.m. The UFV cheerleading team is looking for guys as well as girls. This is a great way to be involved, support the Cascades and have fun before the home-town fans. The cheerleading team will practise every Wednesday from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at the Valley Stars gym. The 2011 competition schedule includes the Cheer Fest at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre on Feb. 5 and the Sea to Sky competition at the Vancouver Conference Centre on April 1-3. Royals run over competition Sarya Ross (W.J. Mouat) and Alicia Unruh (MEI Middle) posted victories at the Sunfair Invitational cross country meet held in Yakima, Wash., last week. In a meet that attracted more than 2,500 entries, Unruh placed first in the girls Grade 8 race that covered a difficult 1.5 miles. Unruh, who last year won the 14-year old girls 3,000 metres at the BC Junior Development championships, posted a time of 9:42 to record an easy win.
Valley Royals runner Hannah Conrad placed fourth in this race (10:25) while Delaney Champman was 11th (11:20). Ross, a Grade 9 runner at Mouat, had a great race to easily capture first in the girl’s’ junior varsity three-mile run. In a field of 100, Ross took the lead early in the race and was never seriously challenged, recording a winning time of 20:48. Valley Royal runner Ashley Heisler was fifth in the same race with a time of 21:23.

bbotsford police pulled over roughly 1,000 vehicles over two weekends recently, handing out 40 immediate roadside prohibitions. The traffic stops took place at the end of September and the beginning of October, and were part of a push by the department to enforce tough new provincial legislation targeting drunk drivers,

Noe Castro piles pumpkins sky-high at Maan Farms recently. The early fall sunshine and warm temperatures have contributed to an excellent crop of ripe pumpkins, Davinder Maan said. The farm is open every day until Halloween, and features a petting zoo with goats, sheep, a donkey, rabbits and pigs, plus a corn maze, along with pumpkin patch tours. Maan Farms is located at 790 McKenzie Rd. in Abbotsford.
A total of 1,044 sales were processed on FVREB’s MLS in September, an increase of five per cent compared to 997 sales in August, however a decrease of 34 per cent compared to 1,590 sales in September of last year. The board received 2,411 new listings last month, a 15 per cent increase from August, yet a nine per cent decrease compared to September 2009.
