• 2 trout, cleaned and head removed • 1/4 cup dry white wine • 2 tablespoons butter, melted • 1 tablespoon lemon juice • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley • salt and pepper to taste

Directions 1. Preheat a grill for medium-high hat 2. On a flat surface, lay out two sheets of aluminum foil about 18 inches long so that they overlap to make one long wide sheet. Rinse the trout and pat dry. Lay the fish in the centre of the foil about 2 inches apart. Sprinkle with white wine, melted butter and lemon juice. Season with parsley, salt and pepper. Fold te foil up lossely around the fish and crimp the seams to seal. 3. Place the packet on the grill and cook for 15 to 20 minutes, or until fish is cooked through.

Cars crash into two houses

A path of destruction shows where a vehicle plowed into the side of a house in the 3400 block of Trethewey Avenue in Abbotsford around 3:15 p.m. Sunday. The driver fled but was quickly arrested. One witness, who asked to be identified only as Tim, said the man was noticed earlier, driving erratically around the neighbourhood. Tim said the man’s level of intoxication was high at the time of the incident. “It was pretty bad,” he said. The name of the driver cannot be released until charges against him are sworn. MacDonald did say the driver has a history with drinking and driving. The second incident occurred just after 9 p.m. on Sunday in the 3200 block of Fir Avenue. A grey 1997 Honda CRV plowed into a tree, then into a house after it failed to negotiate a turn, said

MacDonald. Damage to the house was “minor,” he said. However the driver fled the scene and is now being sought by police. “Most of the damage was to the front yard and to the tree, but the vehicle and the debris also impacted the house,” said MacDonald. “We’ve been in contact with the registered owner [of the vehicle].” There were six reported car collisions in Abbotsford this weekend as traffic in the area was high due to the Abbotsford International Airshow, however MacDonald said it was definitely unusual to have two of those accidents involve houses.

Hospice has 99-year lease on life

roponents of a campus of hospice care, the Abbotsford Hospice Society, Matthew’s House and Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, were joined Thursday by deputy mayor Patricia Ross to sign a 99-year lease for a city-owned, two-acre site at 32766 Marshall Rd., Abbotsford. “Signing the lease brings us one step closer to fulfilling our shared vision for the Campus of Care,” said Debbie Lehmann, AHS executive director. Abbotsford Hospice Society will build a hospice and support centre for local adult residents, Matthew’s House will provide long-term respite care for children with severe chronic conditions, and Canuck Place will offer hospice services for children at their Abbotsford site. Filomena Nalewajek, CEO of Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, said the groups are thankful to the city council for recognizing the value of the project and supporting it in such a meaningful way. “Though each of our projects will progress at a different pace, the long-term shared site plan is now confirmed and each organization is confident the campus will meet the needs of the people these facilities will serve,” said Eugene Klassen, representing Matthew’s House.

Small fire smoulders at fire hall

linseed oil-soaked cloth was the source of a small fire that likely smouldered for two days at the Fire Hall No. 4 in Matsqui Village before the charred evidence were discovered by auxiliary firefighters. “Fortunately, it burnt itself out, so we were quite lucky to have minimal damage,” said Mike Helmer,

deputy chief with the Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service. Fire crews rub linseed oil onto wooden rope pulls and axe handles to keep them from becoming brittle, said Helmer. However, when left out in the open, a balled-up rag saturated with linseed oil has a high risk of spontaneous combustion. That’s likely what happened at the fire hall. “We have a procedure to store them [in an airtight container], but

it wasn’t followed. A lot of [fires] come down to human error, and this was a human error,” said Helmer. The Matsqui Village fire hall is maintained by on-call auxiliary firefighters, who may not go to the building every day. Judging by the fire hall log, Helmer said the building was last entered about two days before the remnants of the fire were discovered, about July 23. “It probably took 30 hours to ignite, smouldered overnight and ran out of fuel,” he said. The hall had minor fire dam-

age where the rag was left out and significant smoke damage, which Helmer estimated to be about $30,000. Since the fire hall is an old building, it wasn’t required to have smoke or heat detectors, but those will be installed now, he said. Linseed oil on cloth, other oily rags, and other organic material such as fish oil, fishmeal, hay and

manure, can heat up and combust spontaneously when conditions are right. Such materials should be carefully managed and stored in airtight containers to prevent fires. “The best thing to do is to air [rags] out on the clothesline to allow the oils to dissipate, and dispose or store them in an airtight metal container,” said Helmer.

nrolment is up 11 per cent from last year at the University of the Fraser Valley, and its projections show the facility will operate at 108 per cent of its government-set target in the coming academic year. That’s good news, as it means that locally, more young people are pursuing post-secondary education. Historically, the Fraser Valley has had a lower postsecondary participation rate than the national average, but that’s changing as more students understand the value of post-secondary credentials. However, the provincial government growth funding that UFV has received for the past five years that allowed it to add hundreds of spaces annually, ended this year and that will pose some challenges for the university. “We do not receive any extra funding for critical student services such as library resources, advising, counseling, writing and math centres, student life activities, registration help, or even parking,” said Eric Davis, UFV’s provost and vice-president academic. It means UFV’s ability to respond to demand may become limited. Davis suggests that students be prepared for longer classroom wait lists and to be willing to be flexible in their choices. He doesn’t see demand waning any time soon. NDP: crystal balls and HST

know the next provincial election won’t occur for another couple of years yet (barring successful recall campaigns in a bunch of ridings before then) but it isn’t too early to start thinking what an NDP-led government is going to look like. While party leader Carole James hasn’t been able to completely silence her critics on the left, the odds remain quite good for her being called “Premier Carole James” after that election is over. But who else will form the face of such an NDP government? Who will be the cabinet ministers, and which will be the ones to whom James gives the most responsibilities? As in any political party, there is a pecking order in the NDP caucus. There is the A team, the B team, perhaps even the C team. Those on the A team will likely be the top cabinet ministers, along with a few in the B circle. Those in the other groups are destined for lengthy stays on the backbench unless they show more talent. And now to name some names, at the risk of bruising a few egos along the way. There appear to be roughly 10 MLAs in the top group. They are the ones who ask most of the questions during question period (always a clue to who is considered the strongest by their leader and her top lieutenants) and are put forth in the media for stating party positions.

From the Ledge In this group, I place house leader Mike Farnworth, health critic Adrian Dix, energy critic John Horgan, finance critic Bruce Ralston, justice critic Leonard Krog, social critic Shane Simpson, small business critic Jenny Kwan, environment critic Rob Fleming, caucus chair Norm Macdonald and caucus whip Katrine Conroy. Others to keep an eye on include Surrey MLA Sue Hammell, who was a cabinet minister in the previous NDP government, newcomers Doug Donaldson, Kathy Corrigan, Spencer Chandra Herbert, and former MP Dawn Black. Of course, some of the rookies in 2013 will also likely make the grade. Whoever wins in Kamloops and/or Prince George will likely be in cabinet, since regional representation is always a factor in putting together a cabinet. So start paying more attention to those MLAs right now. The odds are good they’re going to be deciding how your tax dollars are spent before too long. It’s time everyone cut interim Chief Electoral Officer Craig James a little slack.

His controversial decision not to immediately pass the antiHST petition on to the legislative committee responsible for dealing with it has been met with a near-hysterical reaction. I wrote a short time back about the irrational anger that is strangling reasoned debate in this province, and the venom aimed at James is an example of that. Those who insist his actions are somehow an assault on democracy are making exaggerated claims. Finally, the legislative bill to repeal the HST will not be introduced in the legislature until the spring (if that is indeed what the committee opts for). So there is no urgency here. While I personally feel James should have indeed sent the petition to the committee, his failure to do that hardly creates some kind of intolerable antidemocratic atmosphere. If, by the fall, the committee still doesn’t have the petition, then we may have a problem. But one does not exist right now. And those conspiracy buffs who darkly ascribe partisan motives to James’ decision are wildly off-base as well. I’ve known the man for more than 20 years, and can attest to his integrity and independence. So, everyone: calm down. ■ Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global BC. nother Abbotsford International Airshow has come and gone. No doubt many tens of thousands of people who came to see the spectacular show are still grinning, with visions of the incredible flying machines soaring up to the blue, looping and dancing, in some cases within mere inches of each other. The annual show is a testament to the technical ingenuity of man, and to the raw gutsiness of the men and women who pilot the jets, despite Gforce levels that nearly push the life out of them. While the Abbotsford airshow is a superbly choreographed family event, it also stands to remind us of the men and women who serve on our behalf, in wars and tragic situations around the world. By attending and doffing our hats at our more benign show, we show our appreciation of those willing to risk their lives for peace and freedom. Besides fostering a healthy respect for our Canadian Armed Forces and those of our allies, the airshow also benefits Abbotsford more directly, as thousands travel to our city and get a taste of the good life in the valley. At its annual Aerospace Day, the City of Abbotsford and Cascade Aerospace play host to a conference of big players in the aviation sector, to nurture business opportunities locally and across Canada. While we’re already proud of the airshow, in two years time, it really will be a party. All the shows are special, says airshow president Ron Price, but the 50th anniversary should be a remarkable celebration that will stir our pride and our hospitality. We’ll see you there.

Vicki Gunvalson is wrong. (Plenty of questions posed for Mayor Peary, Times, Aug. 10). It seems people who never believe in climate change, and won’t support politicians who do, will not spend a nickel to adjust their lives in response to it, and demand that they splurge away the precious bits of water we have left like it’s the 1950s. What gall. Not our water, Vicki. We have had dry season after dry season, and the non-believers continue to want politicians to bring us answers that aren’t there. Our building of 56 families has regular toilet inspections so that precious water doesn’t flow down the drain. We encourage low-flush or two-stage toilet conversion, we encourage water saving through replace-

ment of laundry appliances with newer technology, we have issued a list of recommended practises of how to save water. We have spent several thousands of dollars on a new pressure reduction valve and having our meter rebuilt, to control our water. Our sprinkler system is off and our lawn is a handsome golden brown. Every time I look at the lawn, I am reminded of those who never believe change could happen in their lifetime, but when it happens, they put down the very politicians they instructed not to act. The worst thing you can do is say “Oh Jane, can do anything to Muffy and she would never bite.” This is an unfair situation for Muffy and a dangerous situation for Jane. Parents (or supervisors of the pet) must have full control of the dog. Training classes are extremely important for all family members throughout the life of the pet. It is also important that you provide a secure environment for your dog so they do not escape and roam the neighbourhood. If you have a fenced yard but people can put their hands through, put up a second buffer fence. If you are approached by an unknown strange dog that you suspect may be aggressive, do not yell, wave your arms and run. Instead, face it but do not look it in the eye. Stay calm. Blend into the background. And back away to a safe location. Try to get something between you and the dog. Here are some of the basics parents and adults must know and need to teach their children.

he bottom line for preventing injury to children from dog bites is really quite simple: children in the presence of dogs must be under constant supervision by an adult capable of controlling both the child and the dog. The majority of bites suffered by children are inflicted in a home environment when the child (or children) is left unsupervised with the dog. Eighty-six per cent of the injuries occur when the child is playing with or petting the dog, approaching the dog while eating, or surprising the dog while sleeping. Studies have shown that trying to teach children dog bite prevention has very poor success. Those same studies have also shown that most children misinterpret dog body language, even after undergoing training on understanding behaviour. It is up to the adults to provide the necessary supervision. Parents need to recognize and diffuse common trig-

swarming,” said Campbell. Their task is made even more time consuming by the fact that the Campbells are attempting to breed queen bees. This is done by putting day-old larvae in with the bees and then creating an atmosphere of prosperity within the bee cells, making sure they are happy and well-fed. Along with working with the bees, the couple recently had their first ever Junior Beekeepers program. The attendees, aged 11 to 13, worked with live bees, learned honey recipes and how to build beehives or supers. “We did everything that we could

The Mission Food Access Network ventured into food preservation workshops this summer, and the first introductory class this month drew a dozen people, said member Susan Truman. “People are more interested in where their food comes from. They want local food, and they want to keep it,” she said. Participants took home a small feast, including blueberry freezer jam, spicy Cae-

sar pickles and a jar of salsa. The Mission network offers two more canning workshops, on Aug. 21 and on Aug. 28, just in time for the summer and fall harvests. Both workshops take place at the All Saints Anglican Church, at 33077 Second Ave., Mission. The courses will cover food and equipment preparation and safety steps to preserve fruits, vegetables and meats. Ingredients are provided. The first workshop on Aug. 21, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., is a hands-on lesson for hot water stovetop canning, and is best for those interested in preserving more acidic fruits and veggies. The cost is $25. Participants

will be able to take home a couple of jars of preserved goods. The facilitator is Cindy Greyell of Chef’s Secret Service Catering. The second workshop on Aug. 28, is from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. This class is $40. Participants will leave this workshop with safe, tested recipes and a jar or two of canned product. It’s led by Funke Ilumoka, community kitchen program co-ordinator for DIVERSEcity Community Resources Society in Surrey. This type of canning is best for preserving non-acidic vegetables, meats and fish, said Susan Truman with Mission’s Food Access Network. The workshops are good refresher courses, even if you used to can years ago, because so many aspects

of food preservation have changed, said Truman. “Tomatoes for example used to be more acidic. Now we have to add some lemon,” she said, which helps discourage bacteria. The facilitators are experienced and are big on safety, said Truman. The workshops are spons o r e d b y t h e Wo m e n’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley and are partially funded by the United Way of the Fraser Valley. I mean, it’s just fantastic,” said Lt.-Col Vogan, who has 21 years flying experience and is the commanding officer of the 419 Moose Squadron in Cold Lake, Alta. “I can’t imagine a more exciting experience than flying a jet fighter. “Everyone says that I get very excited about my job.” Vogan made the trip to the Fraser Valley for this year’s Abbotsford International Show, which began last Friday and ran all weekend. Meeting the public and seeing their reaction to one of the world’s leaders in aviation is a large part of the fun for pilots, he said. “It’s very exciting, the machinery and the capability,” he said. “I think Canadians can be extremely proud of the system that’s in place and the aircraft in place. “They are reliable, they’re leading edge and they really fill the bill we need right now. I think it says an awful lot about us as a country. The amount of progress in 100 years is phenomenal. “My grandparents told me that when they were young people, if an airplane flew over the town everything stopped . . . and now they have

a grandson flying supersonic fighters. It makes you wonder where we’re going to go.” Although he admitted he does enjoy the 1986 movie Top Gun, a movie about the top air combat fighters in the U.S., Vogan said there is no room for that kind of Maverick flying in the Canadian Armed Forces. “It’s a great Hollywood movie but I don’t think it’s representative of the people or the way we do business,” he said. “There is no flying by the seat of your pants. We have no room for that or for people who act that way.” “I don’t think it’s truly representative of the professionalism displayed by any of the pilots who come through.”

These include Takushoku University, Fukagawa General Hospital, Yakara Textile Museum and plant, a Fukagawa shrine, City Hall, and other educational and public facilities. The memorandum for the twinning of Fukagawa City, in Hokkaido, Japan, and the City of Abbotsford, was signed in Abbotsford on May 13, 1998.

‘N’ decals popping up on police cars

Burnaby man is claiming entrapment after he witnessed a driver get pulled over by an unmarked police cruiser with an N on the rear of the vehicle along the Abbotsford-Mission highway in late July. Peter Doerksen, a delivery truck driver who works the roads of the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley, had just turned onto Highway 11 from Old Clayburn Road when he noticed a man had been pulled over and was receiving a traffic ticket from a female police officer. The officer was driving a black unmarked Dodge Charger with a novice driver emblem on the rear of the car. Doerksen said he pulled over to the side of the highway, approached the officer and asked if she was a new driver as the emblem indicated. He said the officer informed him that she did not have any restrictions on her licence – those restrictions being that she would have either a learner or novice driver’s licence, which is not permitted under the APD’s minimum requirements for applicants as stated on the department’s website. He then asked her to remove the N from the vehicle, however, she refused, he said. “There’s nothing wrong with keeping the roads safe and I appreciate that, but being sneaky like that and specifically baiting people – in the United States it’s called entrapment,”

said Doerksen. “These tactics are unfair if not illegal,” he added in an email. But ICBC spokeswoman Cindy Kralj said the APD and other law enforcement agencies are not violating the Motor Vehicle Act by putting an ‘N’ on the back of their cars. “Let’s say you’re not a [novice driver] but you have an N

Civil Liberties Association, does not see this police tactic as a violation, either. “While a lot of police undercover tactics deserve scrutiny, especially those that involve breaking the law or infiltrating political organizations, I’m not sure that pretending to be a novice driver, or using unmarked cars, or both, is a tactic that is worthy of constitutional review,” he wrote in an e-mail.

Briefly Abbotsford is on the receiving end of $108,700 in grants to sports programs and Mission will receive more than $15,000, courtesy of community gaming grants, announced Friday by Rich Coleman, Minister of Housing and Social Development. “The province wants to encourage active lifestyles and help our youth foster their talents through sports,” he said in a release. “Through these grants we are supporting local organizations that contribute to healthier communities across B.C.” The following grants were distributed the week of Aug. 9-13: Abbotsford Female Hockey Association – $17,900. Abbotsford Minor Hockey Association – $25,200. Abbotsford Rugby Football Club Society – $10,200. B.C. Speed Skating Association – $47,800. B.C./Yukon Rope Skipping Association – $7,600. Mission received $15,900 in grants to the following sports programs: Mission City Boxing Club – $2,600. Mission Minor Softball Association – $11,300. Mission Racers Speed Skating Club – $2,000. More than 225 organizations in the Lower Mainland will benefit from the $5.9 million in community gaming grants this year.

UFV hoopsters go down fighting

he University of the Fraser Valley Cascades came out strong to establish their presence from the get-go, but couldn’t hang on and were beaten by the Horned Frogs of Texas Christian University 88-74 in an exhibition game Friday night at the Envision Centre. The Cascades women built up an early 10-point lead to stay in front after the first quarter, and were able to hang with the tough TCU squad, who shot close to 40 per cent, to regain the lead midway though the second quarter. At the half the Horned Frogs were up 38-33. The more experienced TCU team (NCAA Mountain West Conference) led by 12 points after three quarters but the Cascades were moving the ball well and scored key baskets to stay in the contest. UFV made a run in the fourth quarter and knocked the lead down to eight points before TCU hit two key baskets to secure the win. “I thought we got stronger every game and that culminated with a pretty good game against TCU [the defending Mountain West Conference Champions]. They have the conference player of the year, a first team all-star and have played in the national tourney nine of the past 10 years,” said Cascades head coach Al Tuchscherer. “It was a great challenge for our squad and we responded how I had really hoped we would.”

Let the debate begin about MMA at the AESC T

he Abbotsford Entertainment and Sport Centre, one-third of the $85-million turned $115-million Plan A project and managed by Global Spectrum, has certainly been met with criticism since it opened in May 2009. After all, it did cost a lot to build the thing, and as of right now it sits idle. This likely won’t go over well if taxpayers hear the word ‘deficit’ used to describe the soon-to-bereleased revenue numbers, which there are rumblings of this happening. But while some people at City Hall and the Abbotsford Police Department might

So too is the outcry from the political powers that be

at City Hall to bring better events in higher numbers to the AESC. According to Trey Bell, general manager for the AESC, Global Spectrum has already looked into the possibility of housing an MMA event in Abbotsford, however it is not actively pursuing such an endeavour at this time due to the threat of gang violence. “The Abbotsford Police Department has an antigang initiative and I really need to keep that in mind when booking different events,” said Bell. “Financially it would be a good thing for the facility. That event would be highly

attended and it would be highly successful but it’s something were to happen, I don’t want to say it’s immeasurable, but it’s hard to quantify the damage it would do to Abbotsford’s reputation.” Paul Daniel, a longtime MMA fighter and now coach at Valley Fight in Chilliwack, has tried to bring the sport to the AESC, but has had no luck swaying local authorities. “I contacted [Global Spectrum] right after the AESC opened and the next people I contacted were the Abbotsford Police,” he said. “They said they had no interest in having an MMA

event, that it attracts organized crime and basically my reply to that was ‘why aren’t you using this event to have information booths and try to bridge that gap with that demographic.” Perhaps the city can look to MMA events recently held at Global Spectrum managed South Okanagan Events Centre in Penticton and how successful they were. After all, the Okanagan isn’t exactly free of gang members or violence, either. The bottom line on this issue is MMA, a sport recently denounced by the B.C. Medical Association, is huge – it’s a cash cow.

The staff over at the AESC know this, which is why they haven’t completely pulled the plug on possibly bringing in such an event. Lets recap: An expensive building sits empty, a sport in incredibly high demand, the rumour of an AESC deficit, and a city council and police force unwilling to budge on their stance MMA attracts gang members. The bell has sounded and this heavyweight debate has begun.
