Mission woman found A Mission woman who we n t m i s s i n g f r o m a n Abbotsford medical facility late last Thursday (Aug. 5) has been found in good health, thanks to an observant passerby. Police released a missing person’s notice last week, asking for the public’s help in finding 50-year-old Debra Lypchuk. Someone spotted Lypchuk on North Parallel Road in Abbotsford Sunday evening and conveyed the information to the Abbotsford Police. A patrol officer found Lypchuk, who was cooperative and appeared to be in good health. She was returned to the medical facility for continued treatment. The Abbotsford Police thank the public for their help in locating Lypchuk.

Science rocks at UFV The University of the Fraser Valley is hosting its first-ever Science Rocks summer camp specifically for Aboriginal girls from Aug. 11-13. The camp in Chilliwack is for girls aged 8-13 and is free. “It was always part of our long-term plan for Science Rocks to reach out to community groups that are historically under-represented in the science areas,” said UFV acting Dean of Science Ora Steyn. “It is very evident that we need to encourage more Aboriginal girls to explore the sciences.” Science Rocks camp will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily, and participants will explore math, computers, biology, chemistry, and environmental sustainability in a fun, educational manner. There are physical activities, lab time, and opportunities to explore the wonders of science. Lunch is included each day. “This will be a fun time full of activities that they will all enjoy.” Space is limited so register by contacting Ora Steyn at ora.steyn@ufv.ca or call 604-851-6346, or 1-888-5047441, local 6346. A Canadian Forces member puts a final polish on the CF-18 Hornet Demonstration Jet at last year’s Abbotsford International Airshow. Due to a recent crash, the Hornets will not be at this year’s airshow, which begins Friday, but the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, right, will be.

I

t will be a learning experience for audience members and student pilots when the CT-155 Hawk makes an appearance this weekend at the Abbotsford International Airshow. It won’t be the first time the Hawk has made the trip to Abbotsford, but 2010 will see this new crop of pilots perform an entirely different routine. The CT-155 Hawk is flown by student pilots as part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization flying training program, designed to prepare up and coming aviators for a “frontline fighter aircraft,” according to the Department of National

Defence and Canadian Forces. “Its Rolls-Royce turbofan engine generates more than 6,000 lbs of thrust and powers the jet to supersonic speeds,” says the National Defence website.

AIRSHOW, from page A1 “We gave them the invitation to them and they came, and there was a great response from everybody that was involved with it. “We learned about them. Before they came here, there was this feeling that what they had was inferior stuff and inferior pilots. “Once they had come and demonstrated what they could do with their equipment, it changed the thinking of a lot of people, including the military and industrial establishment in North America.”

al Air Force and 14 other countries rely on the Hawk to prepare their pilots for combat. The United States Navy uses its own version – the T-45A Goshawk – as an advanced trainer for carrier operations.” Once student pilots earn enough flying hours with the Hawk, they can join the 410 Squadron, the operating training unit that flies the CF-18 Hornets. Conversely, the Hornets have pulled out of this year’s airshow following a crash last month at the Lethbridge County Airport during a morning practice session. Capt. Brian Bews narrowly escaped with his life after successful ejecting out of his CF-18 fighter jet, which burst into a huge ball of fire upon impact with the ground. The Hornets have cancelled the rest of their season as a result.

Snowbirds set for show While Price took a moment from his increasingly busy schedule to reminisce about the past, he and his team inside the airshow headquarters on Tower Street are now in full flight. The Abbotsford International Airshow takes off on Friday and ends Sunday. It’s a hectic time, but this is what they live for, said Price. “We’re very fortunate that we’ve had wonderful

shows before and we’re going to have a fabulous show again this year,” he said. With the show less than a week away, Price took time to acknowledge those who help make it a success from behind the scenes, including its sponsors, the more than 1,000 volunteers, the City of Abbotsford and the Abbotsford International Airport. This year’s show will include the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, the Canadian Air Force Snowbirds, as well as demonstrations from the C-17 Globemaster and the F-15 Strike Eagle, among others.

Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff will stop at the Bakerview Eco-Dairy on Sumas Way at 3 p.m., to chat with locals for about an hour. “We’re hoping for 100 to 150 people, from this area and Mission, Aldergrove, Chilliwack,” said Musleh Hakki, a member of the Abbotsford federal Liberal Riding Association, and who helped arrange the visit. No formal speeches or events are planned. “He just wants to shake hands and talk to people,” said Hakki.

bbotsford Police are on the lookout for a dangerous offender missing from the Chilliwack Community Corrections Centre since July 7. Dale Edward Koenders, 46, was spotted in Abbotsford possibly three times within seven days after the Correctional Service Canada issued a Canada-wide warrant for his arrest on July 8. Koenders’ criminal history includes a sexual assault with a weapon against a young woman. A dangerous offender serving an indeterminate sentence, Koenders was on day parole when he went missing from the Chilliwack correctional facility. He was most recently seen in the centre of town, in the 32500 block of South Fraser Way, on Thursday (Aug.

It’s a good opportunity for locals to say hi and get a photo with the Liberal leader who may be the next prime minister, he added. From Abbotsford, Ignatieff goes to the Fraser Canyon where he will affirm his Canadian roots, when he presents the Yale Historic Site a copy of a journal penned by his great-grandfather George Monro Grant. Grant is credited with helping to unite the federation of Canada in 1867. He later crossed Canada surveying a new rail route for the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1872. Based on his diary accounts, Grant wrote a book in 1873 titled Ocean to Ocean, which encouraged many to colonize the west. Fraser Valley Regional District director Dennis Adamson met Ignatieff at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities convention in Toronto and invited him to Yale and to donate a copy of his famous ancestor’s diary to the Yale Historic Site. Throughout the summer Ignatieff is on an extended “Liberal Express” bus tour to every province and territory in Canada.

A deflating look at BC Place

F

or a government that is in serious trouble when it comes to credibility and trust, it’s odd for the B.C. Liberals to continue to make nonsensical claims about their economic competence. I’m referring to last week’s boast that the new roof for BC Place stadium is “on time and on budget.” For sheer gall, I suppose that claim is in some way impressive. But it doesn’t ring true when compared to the history of that controversial project, where costs have ballooned and the schedule for getting a new roof kept changing for years. For a long time, the B.C. Liberals denied there was any need for a new roof. The government dismissed a 2006 engineering report that said the original roof needed replacement. Then, a year later, a giant hole was blown in the roof and it began to leak regularly. It was agreed a new roof was needed and in 2008 it was announced a new retractable roof would be installed. Less than a year later, Tourism Minister Kevin Krueger said the whole project was delayed because it was proving more complex than originally thought. But not only has the timeline wobbled back and forth over the years, so has the budget, which has climbed an astronomical 58 per cent in a little more than a year. The first estimate from the

KEITH BALDREY

From the Ledge government was $365 million. Then, a few months after the last election, the new number was $458 million. But Krueger then admitted that when you included all associated costs, the true budget was $563 million. But wait – he forgot about the $14-million cost for the temporary stadium at the old Empire Stadium site. So, everything in, and the final tally is $577 million, which is $208 million over the original estimate (an estimate based on actual business plan, according to the B.C. Liberals). On top of all this, no firm date can be given for when the darn stadium will re-open for business. The B.C. Lions had been told they’d only have to spend one year in the temporary facility (although, by most accounts, it’s a lot nicer place to watch the Leos than the concrete bowl of BC Place Stadium). The only commitment has been that the stadium will be ready to host the 2011 Grey Cup game, which occurs in November. Aside from the BC Place roof overrun, there are such things

as the new Vancouver Convention Centre, which cost almost $900 million – almost double the original estimate. The Port Mann Bridge project has ballooned from $600 million to $3.3 billion. It was also supposed to be a private-public partnership when it came to financing, but that fell through and the government is now on the hook for the entire amount. For years, the government has insisted the costs for the 2010 Olympics would be $600 million, and not a penny more. Last month, it finally admitted the tally was about $925 million – an overrun of more than 50 per cent. And let’s not forget last year’s pre-election budget, which turned out to be the most inaccurate budget in B.C. history. The NDP was excoriated by the B.C. Liberals for its so-called “fudge-it budget” in the mid1990s, but last year’s wildly inaccurate budget dwarfs the NDP’s record when it comes to missing the mark. Various polls continue to show voters give the B.C. Liberals more credibility than the NDP when it comes to the economy. Based on the track record of this government recently, it’s difficult to see why that continues to be the case. ■ Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C. ow could more than 50 people come to the same conclusion: that staying in the path of a wildfire is the way to go, as opposed to heeding an evacuation order and getting out ASAP? That’s the question a lot of people are asking this week, following reports that at least 53 people in B.C.’s Cariboo region are refusing to leave – despite the fact that two fires are burning in the area. Without asking each one of those 53 people, we can’t know why they’ve decided to stay. It’s possible a few of them are of the same mindset as Harry Truman, who was never seen again after refusing to leave his home on Mount St. Helens. Nobody takes on a volcano and wins. Maybe a wildfire seems less threatening, but anyone who remembers the devastation Kelowna suffered in 2003 should realize it’s not. For more recent examples, there’s always California and Australia. So what is it that compels people to ignore the pleas of police and other officials, and possibly, their own friends and family? Maybe it’s fear of looting, or simply fear of leaving all of their “stuff” behind. Maybe it’s a problem with authority, or with being told what to do. Or maybe people who stay behind simply think they’re invincible, that it won’t happen to them. Either way, this kind of behaviour is selfish in the extreme. It makes the work of emergency personnel that much more difficult, and it likely makes the friends and family of those who refuse to leave sick with worry. So how could more than 50 people decide to stay? If the fire doesn’t get them, maybe they can answer that question, because we’d really like to know.

Plenty of questions posed for Mayor Peary Mayor George Peary, a few questions from a taxpaying citizen in Abbotsford. How much of our taxpayer money is going to policing the watering ban and how much per hour do these union city workers make driving in their air conditioned trucks taking down addresses of violators? Are the contractors that the city hires just for the water ban policing paid on commission, or by the hour? How many fines are actually paid? Are people able to contest these fines, and if so, how much does it cost the city to collect the fine? How much does it cost to decal a vehicle or a bus with all the water-ban jargon? How much are these so called ‘smart meters’ going to cost the taxpayers of Abbotsford? I have heard people say that you can water your trees and your bedding plants with a hose, by hand. Mr. Mayor, exactly how long do you think that takes? I can tell you that in my yard it is roughly two hours each day. Am I able to deduct the cost of my time from my property taxes? Maybe you can have the student bylaw officers come and do it for me when I’m on holidays in August so that I don’t lose all my plants and trees. After all, we are paying these people with our money in the first place. Why, Mr. Peary, aren’t you making sure that the water system is dealt with now, not in five years, and what happens as our population continues to increase? What’s next Mr. Mayor, pay-per-flush? This problem is far more serious than grass. It’s a matter of civil rights, taxpayer rights and making the right decisions. City council knows it, or should

know it. I can’t think of a problem that needs to be dealt with more urgency than this one. People don’t need you, Mr. Peary, telling them what to do with the water they pay for. You are the mayor. We elect you to do what is needed and right for our city. Fix the problem. Council praying for rain isn’t going to help. When is the next election anyway? Vicki Gunvalson Abbotsford

Faces as red as a burning ‘C’ Editor, the Times:

Surely G.H. Chandler (Not impressed with ban, or enforcement, Times, Aug. 3) is not suggesting that water, roads, sewage, facility fees that are affordable for families and the average citizen are more important than Abbotsford city council’s ego projects? How could G.H. Chandler possibly expect council to put the needs of Abbotsford’s taxpayers, the need for significant investments in water delivery and other infrastructure for the City of Abbotsford, ahead of the need of council to assuage their egos? With Chilliwack having the Prospera Centre and the WHL Bruins hockey team; with Langley building their Event Centre for the BCHL’s Langley Chiefs (after Abbotsford council sent the Chiefs on down the road) – how could Abbotsford city councillors be expected to hold their heads up proudly unless they built the AESC and acquired a hockey team, whatever the cost to taxpayers? Undoubtedly G.H. Chandler (or other voters) will be pleased to know that their hard earned tax dollars are not going to support the

Calgary Flames since Calgary does not own the Heat. No, the millions of dollars of taxpayer funded subsidies go into the pockets of those favoured local citizens who make up the ownership group of the Abbotsford Heat. And why should the ownership group of the Heat be expected to assume any of the risk of owning an AHL team when Abbotsford’s city council is willing to make the taxpayers of Abbotsford liable for all the risk? Think how embarrassing it would have been for city council if they hadn’t put the taxpayers of Abbotsford on the hook for $57 million and therefore had no hockey team, leaving city council with an embarrassingly empty arena. Is G.H. Chandler daring to suggesting that saving the taxpayers millions of dollars in yearly operating costs and subsidies to the Heat ownership should have been a higher priority for city council than saving face? Is it reasonable to expect council to feel that solid management, prudent planning and financially sound behaviour are higher priorities than ego projects? Pshaw. If council made a priority of solid management, prudent planning and financially sound behaviour the city would not be at its current risk of insolvency or running out of water and there would be no need for city council and staff to be offering bribes in a desperate bid to get developers to build in Abbotsford. However APD Const. Savoury flavour tips when cooking meat F or many of us, meat is an important part of our daily diet. Whether it be beef, lamb, pork or chicken, it is important to know the basics of creating the most flavour possible. Marinades seem to be first and foremost in people’s minds when it comes to creating flavour in cooked meats. Although they do create flavour, they are also important in making a cut of meat more tender. The best marinades are made up from the simplest of ingredients that you have in your home already. Please don’t rely on the packages of powder you find at the supermarkets. Marinades are made up from a base, an acid, and flavourful ingredients. The base of a marinade is usually oil, as this will aid in the cooking process. An acid such as vinegar, wine, or lemon juice is added to breakdown the tougher proteins found in the meat. Red meats and pork, depending on the cuts, are the toughest and are better to marinate from one hour up to twentyfour hours. Chicken proteins are much more delicate and are more preferably marinated for no longer than four to six hours. Over marinated chicken will actually start to become tough. The same follows through with seafood, as its protein composition is even more fragile than chicken. Seafood should usually be marinated for a mere 30 minutes to an hour. The flavour combinations that can be added to a marinade are literally endless. Crushed garlic, herbs, spices, and condiments, are just a few. Be creative! Flavour creation does not only exist by marinating. Searing meats, marinated or not, is very important. There is virtually no cooking method that should exempt one from searing meat first. This develops a crust that will carry flavour all the way

through to the finished dish one is preparing. Stew, for example, has a more developed beef flavour CHEF when the stew meat pieces DEZ are browned prior to the On addition of other ingredicooking ents. Many presume searing seals juices inside the meat. This, however, is incorrect as no amount of searing can prevent the loss of moisture. The flavour in crust development can be enhanced even further by the addition of seasoning. If the meat has not been marinating, you may want to add salt and pepper to the meat prior to searing. This simple seasoning will then become part of the meat’s outer shell. Applying dry rubs, consisting of a mixture of many different spices, prior to searing is popular for adding a complexity of flavours.

Dear Chef Dez: I heard that it important to let a beef roast “rest” when it comes out of the oven, before carving it. Is this true, and why? Brad B. Abbotsford Dear Brad: This is true. Actually it is true with all cuts of meat, not just beef roasts. The “resting” period gives the meat time to adjust coming from the extreme heat to room temperature. During the cooking process, the high heat causes the atoms in the molecular structure of the meat to move at a high rate of speed. If the meat is cut into soon after it has been removed from the oven, grill, or pan, it will lose a large degree of its vital juices that keep it moist and flavourful.

ROAD CLOSURE— STAVE FALLS BLIND SLOUGH DAM Tuesday, August 17, 2010 to Friday, August 20, 2010 Monday, August 30, 2010 to Tuesday, August 31, 2010 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Dewdney Trunk Road over the Stave Falls Blind Slough Dam will be closed to all vehicle and foot traffic while BC Hydro replaces the gantry crane that is used to raise and lower the spillway gates to modify the water level of the Stave Lake Reservoir. The Hayward Street crossing of the Ruskin Dam will be open to traffic during these closures. Starting in late July, parking will not be permitted at the corner of Dewdney Trunk Road and Florence Lake Forest Service Road (Burma Road). This area will be used for crane assembly. This fall, civil work, rail replacement and repaving will be underway at Blind Slough Dam at the east end of Stave Falls. One lane will be kept open for traffic for most of the construction. The dates of these closures will be advertised as soon as this work has been scheduled. BC Hydro recognizes the inconvenience this may cause and will complete the work as safely and efficiently as possible. We appreciate your patience during this construction. CounterAttack cracking down

Send a youngster to camp

Video contest for teens

ICBC and police are warning drivers they will be caught if they’ve been drinking and then get behind the wheel. Over the B.C. Day long weekend, ICBC, Abbotsford Police and the Integrated Road Safety Unit set up CounterAttack road checks, which led to five impaired charges, 16 24-hour suspensions, and seven 90-day driving prohibitions. From July 30 to Aug. 2, a total of 75 drivers were given alcohol screening tests. In B.C. last year, there were 5,590 drinking-driving convictions (up from 4,880 in 2008). During an average year in Abbotsford there are 129 motor vehicle crashes where alcohol is a contributing factor, 92 people are injured, and at least two people die. For more see icbc.com and find road safety campaigns.

Resurrection Life Ministries has been sending kids to Christian camp for more than 10 years. They now have 25 needy kids pledged for summer camp from families who cannot afford to send their child to a Christian camp. The commitment is $360 per child or about $9,000. To that end, Resurrection Life is hosting a Mission in the Mall from Aug. 12 to Aug. 14 at Sevenoaks Shopping Centre in Abbotsford, where they will meet with the community and ask for the help that so many single parent families cannot afford. They will set up near the Royal Bank entrance and donations will be greatly accepted. For more information, go to www.resurrectionlife.bc.ca or call Ray at 604-807-7470 to find out more about sending youngster in need to summer camp.

Teens, if you’ve ever wished you were Eragon, Percy Jackson, Bella or Edward, the Fraser Valley Regional Library will celebrate the 2010 Teen Reading Club with an online video contest. Get into character this summer and film a short video trailer about a book that you want everyone to check out. Submit your video to the FVRL to be entered to win a digital camcorder and books. You can enter more than once, but be sure to promote a different book in each video. Entries will be accepted until Aug. 31, 2010. Shortlisted videos will be posted on the FVRL website where the public can vote for their favourite from Sept. 7 to 24. Rotary District 50/50 Governor Wayne Wiebe playfully donned nautical Judge’s robes to officially sentence ten members of the Abbotsford Sumas Rotary Club to one or more years of hard labour. Governor Wiebe recently inducted the new Abbotsford Sumas Rotary Board, including Captain Ron Howardson who will chart the Club course with the aid of his Executive crew: President Elect and Membership Chair Wendy Neufeld, Treasurer Joyce Beal and Secretary Kim Hissink who will in turn be supported in Club endeavours by Club Directors Andrea Senfit, Carrie Pratt, Ralph Payne, and Bobbi Spark, and

they will be assisted, of course, by the general membership. During the course of the evening, the Club underscored the enormous debt of gratitude the Abbotsford Sumas Rotary Club owes to the greater Abbotsford

Like puzzles? Then you'll love Sudoku. This mind-bending puzzle will have you hooked from the moment you square off, so sharpen your pencil and put your Sudoku savvy to the test!

SUDOKU

Fun By The Numbers

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

Local swimmers make a big

Splash T

he Abbotsford Whalers Swim Club and the Mission Marlins Swim Club both tasted success at last weekend’s B.C. Summer Swimming Association Fraser Valley Regional Championships at the Centennial Pool in Abbotsford. The Whalers qualified 47 individual swimmers and 14 relay teams for the upcoming provincial championships, which begin Aug. 20 in Kamloops. “It was a very successful meet I think,” said the Whalers Swim Club’s Derrick Gravelle. “It talks to the dedication of both the coaches and the swimmers and as well the parent support. “There’s a lot of dedication on behalf of the coaches and the long hours and hard work they put in at the pool. The Marlins will send 22 individual swimmers, as well as four relay teams to provincials. With so many swimmers headed to provincials from Abbotsford, expectations are high, said Gravelle. “We have our expectations and hard work will continue right up until the provincials.” Gravelle, who swam for the Whalers two years ago, said the level of athletes swimming in the Fraser Valley has gone up in the past few years, which can be attributed to having an Olympic swimmer, Brent Hayden of Mission, right in their own backyard. “It speaks well of the swim program and the British Columbia Summer Swimming Association,” he said. “To evolve to that level, it speaks well to giving a strong base to athletes.”

Canadian Open glory sinks in for Hadwin Abby golfer in tough for final weeks on tour CAM TUCKER camtuckertimes@gmail.com

– BERNARD BRAULT/GOLF CANADA/FOR THE TIMES

Abbotsford’s Adam Hadwin watches his tee shot in the second round of the Canadian Open at St. George’s Golf and Country Club last month in Toronto.

t’s b e e n t w o we e k s n ow, and finally the thought of being the top Canuck at this year’s RBC Canadian Open h a s s e t i n f o r Ab b o t s f o rd’s Adam Hadwin. The former Ledgeview golfer finished the only PGA Tour event in Canada, which was held this year at St. George’s Golf and Country Club in Toronto, tied for 37th at five-under par through four rounds, but it was enough to claim the Rivermead Cup as the low Canadian in the field. “I don’t want to say it was a life changing golf tournament, but it

was certainly a big stepping stone for me in regards to what’s going to happen in the future,” said Hadwin. “I was a very confident player going into that tournament and I think it just reassures that or even built on it a bit more,” he said. “Each tournament for me is another proving ground that I can play and that I can compete and go out on the tour and prove I can compete out there as well. It’s an added bonus.” And he did just that. Right up until an up-and-down final round of one-over par 71, Hadwin was at one point just four shots off the lead. While the tournament’s big prize went to the relatively unheard of Swede Carl Pettersson, a thunderous ovation from the fans greeted Hadwin as he charted a course towards the 18th green. He tapped in a birdie, his second in a row, from a foot away

set up by an amazing 180-yard approach with a five iron. Not bad at all. But now, it’s back to business. Hadwin flew back to Big Smoke on Sunday, as he looks to close out the final three weeks of the 2010 Canadian Tour season in style. First up is the Clublink Jane Rogers Championship, which runs Aug. 9-15 from Halton Hills, Ont. Then it’s the Canadian Tour Championship, which is accompanied by a $325,000 purse for the winner, beginning Aug. 23 from the St. Catherines Golf and Country Club. Hadwin is looking for a top two finish in the Order of Merit, which would push him through to the second round of Q School – qualifying to play on the PGA tour full time. “That’s everybody’s ultimate goal,” he said.

ife is good these days for Corey Eckstein, and why not? After guiding the Abbotsford Junior Cardinals to the B.C. Junior Premier Baseball League championships for the second time in the last three years as head coach, Eckstein will now join the Canadian junior baseball team as an assistant coach. He will travel with the U17 team, which gets picked following this year’s Canada Cup in Kindersley, Sask., to a series of qualifying tournaments in the U.S. and the Caribbean before the 2012 World Championships in South Korea. He wouldn’t have it any other way. “I feel very fortunate for the opportunity,” said Eckstein. “I’ve worked

with a lot of good people over the last six years and I look at this as another opportunity to add to my resume as a coach.” Eckstein’s reputation with a knack for developing young players has continued to grow across the baseball landscape since he returned to Abbotsford after injuring his shoulder in college. He’s enjoyed every second of it, too. “The best part of the job is just watching them grow both as baseball players and as men, as people,” he said. “You watch these players join the organization in Grade 9 and then watch them graduate onto college as Grade 12’s – it’s pretty cool.” One of those players Eckstein has helped develop is 16-year-old M.E.I student Tyler Koslowsky, who was

recently selected to compete at this year’s Canada Cup for Team B.C. He also coached Bryan Arthur, Robert Brooks, Carter Sherban, Luke Webster and Brett Wilson – the five players who graduated from the Cardinals last month to play ball at post-secondary institutions– as well as many others. Cardinals head coach and general manager Andy Rempel was happy to hear the news that his friend and colleague would be representing Canada as a coach. “He means a lot to this organization in terms of developing players, and it’s good for him,” said Rempel.“He teaches those players on the junior team a lot so that when they come up to the senior team, they already know the game very well.” see COACH, page A31

asketball season might still be a few months away, but you wouldn’t know if you stopped by Columbia Bible College last week. The college, previously used during the spring as the B.C. Lions home base for training camp, was being used by the Point Guard College, a basketball camp designed to train young players about the intricacies of the point guard position. “It’s an opportunity to help these kids think like a champion,” said Suzanne DeGroot, who was co-directing this year’s camp at CBC with CIS men’s basketball champion Trevor Nerdhal. Nerdhal won the CIS title last year with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. The Prep School, which includes kids aged 12 to 15,

was held at the CBC. Although it is a predominantly American-based camp, previous trial runs in Abbotsford, as well as other parts of Canada, have made it a staple in these parts. The camp includes three on-court sessions, full meals and classroom sessions where athletes are shown videos of some of the game’s greatest point guards to show what makes them effective. “We talk about how to be effective on the court, as well as approach, how you train as an elite level athlete,” said DeGroot. “One of things we talk about is helping the kids be a successful varsity athlete.” DeGroot said the athletes attending this camp have embraced it in every aspect. “We have kids from as far away as California, Toronto and they’re great athletes who are willing to step out of their comfort zones,” she said. “We teach them that every time they make a mistake, it’s a chance for them to get better so they’re a very responsive group.”

Campfire Cake in a Orange Shell

This is fun to do on a campfire or barbeque. • 1 box yellow cake mix (just ad water kind, 8 oz.) • 6 large thick skin oranges • Water • Tinfoil (heavy)

Slice tops off of oranges and save. Remove orange from shell being careful not to damage shell. Prepare cake mix per instructions. Fill each orange shell half full of cake mix. Replace top and wrap in foil. Bake in hot coals or on grill about 20 minutes, turning often. I use this as a breakfast treat when camping. You can top with Chocolate and Whipped cream if you like and scoop with a spoon right out of the orange shell.
