Briefly Woman’s death now ruled homicide Police say an Abbotsford woman found dead Wednesday was in fact murdered. There are still no details on whether the murder is linked to a dispute and police are not prepared to release the manner or method of her death, Carr said. Homicide investigators will continue to work in Abbotsford through the week and are looking to speak to anyone with information regarding the incident. “Oftentimes people have a little bit of information that they don’t realize is important. We ask people to come forward with any little bit of information and allow investigators to determine the value to the investigation,” Carr said. gricultural industry in Abbotsford generates $1.8 billion a year in revenues, and accounts for more than 11,300 jobs in the community, according to municipal and provincial studies. Described as an economic engine in the city, the business of fruit and vegetable production, and sales of poultry, beef and dairy products is a priority for city council, Mayor George Peary said. City council has engaged local farmers and agri-industry leaders in the community in order to put together a specific agricultural strategy for Abbotsford, he said. “It really is the economic backbone of our community. Three-quarters of our landmass basically is in the [Agricultural Land] Reserve. We want the public to be aware how important agriculture is to us. “We want to make sure as a council that we are actively pursuing [strategic] policies that both promote and protect agriculture,” Peary said. 100 years young
Wishing you a successful fair.
Truly something for everyone
A
bbotsford’s Agrifair is 100 years old this summer, and you’re invited to celebrate the humble industry that has put the heart into the community. The critters, the preserves, the midway, the rodeo and the singers will all be there, as well as new features to start the annual country fair’s second century in style. The fun is on from July 29 to Aug. 2 at the Agrifair grounds, at 32470 Haida Dr., Abbotsford. The Flying Fools High Dive Act makes its first appearance at Agrifair, as they leap from heights of three, six and even 25 metres off a giant tower. During their daily shows, up to five divers leap into a pool of water just three meters deep – don’t miss the 8:30 p.m. shows Thursday through Sunday, which finishes with a flaming fire dive. The kids will want to try the Westcoast Amusements’ new Ring of Fire. For ride junkies, the fair offers a great deal on Thursday: $24 gets you into the fair and an all-day ride pass (regular all-day ride pass is $35). KidZone will have youngsters busy all five days in the ball diamond, with playstations, games, exotic animals, magic and entertainers. The Mighty Fraser Rodeo features top cowboys and cowgirls from across North America as they compete in saddle bronc, bareback and bull riding, steer wrestling, team roping and barrel racing, at 6 p.m. nightly Friday through Sunday. The Times’ own king of cuisine, columnist Chef Dez will whip up mouth-watering dishes every day in the fair’s Pride of the Valley area, which will feature the rich bounty of the region. “I’ll be doing some old-school cooking

classes,” he said, making items such as buerre blanc sauce, fresh biscuits and Belgian waffles, with lots of blueberry touches, made with berries donated by the B.C. Blueberry Council. With Agrifair celebrating 100 fairs, it makes sense to showcase the John Deere Company in the Pioneer corner. Almost twice as old as Agrifair, John Deere tractors remain the popular choice on most Fraser Valley farms. Pioneer Corner displays antique and new equipment, as well as traditional farm preserves and produce. The talented Valley Voices singers compete daily, with the finale for the top new artist on Monday night. Feature performers include Brian Doerksen, Kristal Barrett, Sunday morning gospel celebration and many more during Agrifair’s celebration. see AGRIFAIR, page A5

mall blueberry growers say they could lose their farms if they can’t get stable pricing for their crops. While the demand for the berry remains high – consumers are paying about $3 a pound – prices to growers fluctuate from around $1.25 a pound at the start of a growing season, to 50 cents or even less than 40 cents a pound, like last year, said local grower Gary Sandhar. Yet pickers are paid 55 to 60 cents a pound for their labour, not to mention other farm costs, he said. There is a suspicion among those with farms 10 to 200 acres, that packers, who are
also growers themselves in almost all cases, are keeping prices low. “If this trend continues, we won’t be able to break even,” Sandhar said. The smaller farmers fear they will be squeezed out of the sector, bought up by the larger processor/farmers. “As a whole they are cheating the farmers,” said a frustrated Jarnail S. Heer at a recent grower meeting. The answer may be to create their own co-operative, like raspberry growers have done in the past. The blueberry farmers want to raise pricing concerns with Minister of Agriculture Steve Thomson and local MLAs. A cold spring has also reduced crops. In good years, the bushes

Crankiness is sticking around
A
general crankiness seems to have taken hold of the electorate, which is bad news for politicians of all stripes. As a result, it has become increasingly difficult to have a rational political debate about various issues. I detect this anger on radio phone-in shows, in e-mails I get from viewers and readers, and from posts on various forms of social media, including Facebook and personal blogs. And I hear from strangers who stop me on the street, ready to vent their hostility towards politicians and governments of various shapes and sizes. It’s not all directed at the B.C. Liberal government, although I think the Liberals attract the biggest portion of anger from voters right now. The other day, while walking down busy Government Street in downtown Victoria, I was accosted by two of the many merchants who have stores there. Yes, they said, they weren’t too happy about the HST, but what was really making them angry right now was the rising cost of municipal property taxes. They pointed to a couple of recent store vacancies, attributed they said to property taxes in the tens of thousands of dollars. I just finished reading a few emails from folks upset about another BC Hydro rate hike, which comes even as the Crown corporation reports huge earnings every year.
KEITH BALDREY
From the Ledge Last week, there was the reannouncement of the new Port Mann Bridge being a year ahead of completion. Nothing new there, except a reminder that everyone will be paying a rising toll for crossing it when it’s done in 2012. Throw in the carbon tax that went up again at the beginning of the month, plus the HST, which has boosted the price of everyone’s latte, and you’ve got a lot of reasons to explain why people appear to be so frustrated. Check out some of the vitriolic bile to be found on the Internet. Google “Gordon Campbell” and “HST” and see what comes up. It’s not so much the websites that come off reading like the ravings of seriously angry people, it’s the comment threads that follow many blogs and Internet articles. Because such postings are anonymous, people feel free to vent their spleens and spew hateful stuff. And it’s not just Campbell who is a target on the Internet. NDP leader Carole James seems to be despised by many of the same people who profess to be Campbell haters.
Here she is with a 20-plus point lead in opinion polls, and there are still those on the left who want to decapitate her leadership. Two recent articles in left-wing media outlets reflect the angst on the left. The comments following the articles for the most part excoriated James and demanded that she step down before the next election. This doesn’t make sense. For example, it has been near impossible to have a rational debate on the HST. I’ve pointed out the NDP estimates the average “hit” to a consumer from the HST is about $520 annually, which works out to $10 a week or about $1.50 a day. But when I use those stats to make the point that the HST, while unpopular, may not be quite as horrific as some insist, I get denounced as a Liberal apologist or worse. Anyone who sticks their head up right now runs the risk of it getting shot off. Our BC Hydro rates will continue to increase, for at least a few years. The carbon tax will go up again next year, and our municipal property taxes will continue to climb. Everyone will continue to get dinged, over and over again. And I’m not sure when that crankiness and disenchantment will end. ■ Keith Baldrey is chief political

hough many of us may be working in factories or offices, chasing the Canadian dream, the work of farming in the Fraser Valley is going stronger than ever, more than 100 years after settlers first plugged potatoes and wheat seeds into this fertile ground, and let their cows graze on floodsoaked grasses of Sumas Prairie. Unlike most places in the world, B.C. has an Agricultural Land Reserve, a thing envied around the globe as it preserves fertile ground from speculators and “growth.” On that land, more often than not, you’ll find computerized dairy farms, precisely engineered fields and cutting edge technologies such as Chris Bush’s anaerobic manure digester that cuts greenhouse gases and creates power. The ‘dumb’ farmer, looked down upon for too long by self-important city cousins, today usually has an agricultural degree coupled with a keen and supple sense for business, a necessity in today’s cutthroat global market. If you live in the valley, thank agriculture for your job. Poultry, milk, vegetables, mushrooms and fruits, add up to close to half a billion dollars in farm gate sales – the many spinoff sectors that support agriculture add another $1.5 billion to our local economy. If you eat, thank farmers for the food on your plate, some of the best, freshest and safest in the world. What they do, they do out of pride and love, despite the endless hours and huge financial risks. Farmers are stewards and watchdogs of the land, our water supply and even our air. Farmers and all who work on the farms deserve our gratitude. Remember that next time you stop at a stand to buy fresh peppers or berries. So to all our farmers, old and new and to those to come, thanks for the meal.

Odds are cities offer more Editor, the Times:
I read with interest Ms. Livingstone’s letter (Dearth deters potential resident, Times, July 20) decrying the lack of things to do in Abbotsford. I am puzzled. How long has she lived here? Of course cities have more to do, greater infrastructure, more of . . . well, everything! That’s why they are cities! And that’s why I live in a smaller centre. What to do here? Many events, as she points out, are scheduled. A smaller town takes more personal knowledge and probably more creativity to discover. I’m sure the local chamber of commerce or tourism centre has some ideas. Type Abbotsford Tourism into Google and you have a plethora of suggestions. Since we are the ‘City in the Country,’ check out some of the local markets including the Saturday morning Farmers Market in downtown Abbotsford. Hike, walk or bike our many local trails. Walk around Mill Lake and wander through Kariton House. Look through Trethewey House and the heritage it displays. Go for ice cream at Birchwood Dairy. Visit some of our unique shops such as Hemingway’s Books and Strung Out on Beads in downtown. Visit The Reach and the library next door. And then there are the free local concerts in Jubilee Park on Thursday nights and on Wednesday and Friday nights in Mission. These are not big events but they are what make us Abbotsford. And lastly, in choosing a place to live, I look for good schools, churches, police force, fine residents etc. etc. So much more than stuff to do.› This is a

Shocking ads don’t belong in newspaper Editor, the Times:
Today while I was browsing the classified ads in your paper, I was shocked when I came across an ad for a massage parlour. It is obvious in a twisted way how, although you as the editor are aware what a massage parlour is all about (as per the political comic on page A8), you still are running an ad for a parlour to hire prostitutes. Not only that, but I also have seen ads for promoting these establishments. How then are you justifying your actions? Are you unaware
that prostitution is illegal? Maybe you have interest in promoting someone who is selling drugs illegally? Perhaps you might run an ad for drug dealers or hit men? I find it disturbing how these discreet ads can infiltrate a newspaper while you speak about the criminal activity in our town and how terrible the gangs are here. It is unlawful to stand on a street corner and solicit, but to place
an ad in what should be a respectable paper is perfectly acceptable. When do we as law abiders take a stand and clean up our city? How can we allow crime to overtake our homes and do nothing? Compromise our family values for a few bucks? I would think that we as the majority should have the voice. Andy & Carolynn Reimer Abbotsford

A8 ❘ AGRICULTURE ❘ TUESDAY, JULY 27, 2010 THE TIMES BERRIES, from page A5 To voice their concerns, dozens of growers held an informal meeting in the park by Abbotsford City Hall on July 20 with the B.C. Blueberry Council to see what the council could do. “What we’re looking for is [pricing] stability, and some guidance from the blueberry council. Maybe we’re out to lunch, maybe it’s fair market value, but we want clear information to get to the growers and the packers. We need somebody in between,” said Sandhar. But the B.C. Blueberry Council’s principal role is to market and promote their product, not market management, said council president Mike Makara. “The council is not a price management body. We can’t affect prices,” he said. Lynn Giesbrecht, a director with the B.C. Blueberry Council and a

tive growers in Michigan, B.C.’s largest competitor. While B.C. has about 17,000 acres blueberries planted, produces 90 million pounds a year, and continues to grow, Michigan still has economies of scale B.C. doesn’t. B.C.’s blueberry sector expanded significantly in the last seven years when prices were high, and it continues to expand, but there are also more new growers in the U.S., Chile and even Argentina. Bains agrees many small farmers could face a rough ride, but said there is a bright side in value-added products. “For instance, fruit juices, dried blueberries, premium organic juice. That will definitely help over time,” he said, adding no one is fixing prices. “We all need each other. We’re grower/packers. We’re not like the big multinationals who don’t understand the growers – we do.”

said Giesbrecht, whose husband also works in construction to supplement farm income. The pressure is definitely on the small farmers, said Makara, a thirdgeneration grower on Matsqui Prairie. “If there’s one message we can give out is that producers are getting a smaller and smaller returns every year,” he said. “We’re getting a smaller and smaller percentage of profit.” Growers’ costs for fertilizers, herbicides, equipment and labour have gone up “phenomenally,” he said. Parm Bains, a grower and the owner of processing firm Westberry Farms in Abbotsford, said grower/ packers are buffeted by international market prices, fluctuating exchange rates and other costs like all the other growers. “We’re now dealing with a global market,” he said. Loren Taves loves currants and invites you to try the delicately flavoured pink champagne currant, above. Kids can visit with the several gregarious goats when they’re not roaming their overhead bridges, take hayrides or pony rides, try the giant jumping pillow, slides and zip lines. They can also pick their perfect pumpkin, or launch the orange orbs with Taves’ custommade pumpkin cannon. In fact, the Applebarn will celebrate its 20year anniversary this fall, on Sept. 11 and 12, and is open for the season as of Sept. 1.
To taste the pink champagne currants, give Taves a call at 604-853-3108. He and the family also sell in-season produce at the Applebarn roadside stand at 333 Gladwin Rd., Abbotsford, and at farmers markets. Get location details at www.applebarn.ca. ◗ Taves sells fresh pink currants, not the bushes. Incorrect information ran in the Times’ Bottom Line on July 20.

SUMMER TIME FUN
Chances are that if you have a backyard pool, the cover is off and the filter is humming. Fun in the pool is easily achieved, but an enjoyable day can quickly turn sour if an accident occurs. On average 4,000 water-related injuries occur every year. One in four fatal drownings is a child under the age of 14. * Set up barriers. A self-latching, four-sided isolation pool perimeter fence can prevent children from accidentally falling into an inground pool, or scaling the ladder of an aboveground pool. Aim for fences at least 4-feet-high.
Rods, reels, bait, fish cleaning playground, bathroom, picnic area, BBQs wheelchair safe INCLUDED
MAKE POOL SEASON A SAFE ONE
When possible, ladders should be removed when the pool is not in use. * Remove enticing toys. Children may be drawn to floats or toys in a pool. * Swim with a buddy. Everyone -regardless of age - should swim with someone else who can call for help in case of an emergency. * Children should always be monitored. Designate a responsible adult to watch children who are swimming. This person shouldn’t be distracted by talking on the phone or browsing the Internet.

* Learn to swim. Not only will you learn the basics of swimming, you can learn techniques to stay afloat and save someone’s life. * Wear a life jacket. Children or adults who are not good swimmers should wear an approved flotation device when around water. * Turn off the pump. Children can get stuck to filter intake sources. It can cause bruising. At the worst, it can disembowel a young child. Turn off the filter for safety’s sake when the pool is in use. * Learn CPR. If a person does become injured

iCPR can help clear the airways and revive an individual. * Don’t drink and swim. Alcohol impairs the ability to make decisions and can compromise motor skills. * Prevent falls around the pool. Swimmers should walk around the pool perimeter, not run. Play it safe while swimming and you minimize the risk of injury. Dance in Motion presents....

Kids will love this yummy topper for pancakes or ice cream. The no-cook recipe is also perfect for young cooks, and even simpler if they use the latest kidfriendly chopping tools. INGREDIENTS • 2 medium-size ripe mangos, peeled and pitted • 2 cups strawberries, hulls removed (an adult’s job) • 2 tablespoons fresh mint leaves • 1 tablespoon sugar • 2 teaspoons lemon juice • 1/2 teaspoon salt (optional) INSTRUCTIONS 1. Use a knife or hand-powered chopper to chop the mangos and strawberries into a 1/4-inch dice, then transfer the fruit to a medium-size bowl. Finely chop the mint and add it to the bowl as well. 2. Stir in the sugar, lemon juice, and salt, if using, until well blended. Cover and refrigerate the salsa for 1 hour to allow the flavors to mingle. Makes 2 cups.
Times: 9:00am - 2:30pm When: Aug 9-13 (Ages 6-9) Aug 16-20 (Ages 10-13) Where: Immanuel Fellowship Baptist Church Youth Center

Briefly Lockdown at Matsqui Matsqui Institution was in lockdown mode again following a prisoner assault Wednesday. The injured inmate was assessed by medical staff, and found to have suffered minor injuries. He was treated on site, and a search of the facility turned up several weapons in the commons area of the living unit. Acting Asst. Warden Ben McBeath said an investigation into the incident has been launched and further searches for drugs, weapons and cell phones had been initiated.
Hosts from the popular BBC television show, Antiques Roadshow, Hilary Kay and Paul Atterbury, bring their own entertaining Tales from The Roadshow to Abbey Arts Centre on Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. The show is a storytelling affair, and no appraisals will be rendered. There will be a “meet and greet” with the pair following the event for those who have purchased an additional ticket to do so. Tickets can be bought at the venue, 2329 Crescent Way, Abbotsford, or call the box office at 604-507-6355. S e e m o r e a t w w w. haveyouhaditlongmadam. com.

Your BC Lions — In Their Own Words I grew up in Johnstown, PA., and have been playing football since I was in Grade 7. From very early on, I knew I wanted to play professional football and focusing on that goal kept me motivated to do well in high school and get in to university so I’d have an opportunity to realize my dream. After 10 seasons with the Lions, I still love coming to work every day and doing whatever I can on offence to help this club win a championship for the CFL’s best fans. Growing up, I saw firsthand what could happen to kids who didn’t stay focused on their goals, so I’m very aware of making sure my own children are surrounded by positive influences, whether it’s encouraging my teenage son to do well in high school or coaching my younger son’s football team. It’s also a big reason why I love taking part in our club’s community programs. Among the programs I take part in, I would say the Lions Pride program is one of the most rewarding because I’ve seen firsthand what happens to a young person’s life when they make the right choices. The decisions a youth makes today will affect them tomorrow and I take pride in knowing I may have helped direct one of these young people down a positive path.

Here's How It Works: Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!

d a m Ha d w i n i s p r ov i n g t h e re’s m o re t h a n one golfing sensation to come out of Abbotsford in recent years. While fellow Abbotsford product Nick Taylor failed to make the cut at this year’s RBC Canadian Open in Toronto, Hadwin became Mr. Popular thanks to his four-day total score of five-under-par, 275. It landed him in a tie for 37th overall in the field. But more importantly, it earned him the Rivermead Cup as the low Canadian in the field. He was one stroke better than fellow Canuck Jon Mills and three shots better than seasoned pro and fellow countryman Stephen Ames. 2003 Masters champ Mike Weir failed to make the cut. And accordingly, Hadwin’s popularity with the Canadian contingent of fans at St. George’s Golf and Country Club grew over the course of the event and peaked on the 18th and final hole with the birdie that landed him the Rivermead honours. “I really didn’t know what to think,” he said of his thunderous reception on No. 18. “It was an amazing feeling. The fans have kind of taken me in as the Canadian favourite this week and I can’t thank them enough for that. “I don’t think I was the favourite out there, but it was a lot of fun playing in front of them today. I hope I get to experience that some more.”

– BERNARD BRAULT, GOLF CANADA/FOR THE TIMES
Abbotsford’s Adam Hadwin hoists the prestigious Rivermead Cup as the top Canuck at the 2010 Canadian Open at St. George’s Golf and Country Club in Toronto on Sunday. Hadwin, a Robert Bateman grad, finished with a five-under 275. Sunday proved to be a difficult one for Hadwin, who plays on the Canadian Tour. It was the only one of his four rounds in which he was over par, but the birdie on 18 got rid of any frustration the 22-year-old graduate
of Robert Bateman Secondary may have been feeling. “It was a lot of fun,” Hadwin said. “That front nine, I hit some bad shots, I hit some bad putts. It was just up-and-down. But to finish birdie-birdie . . . I couldn’t have asked for
anything more.” Less than 24 hours after winning Top Canadian honours, Hadwin was back at St. George’s Golf and Country Club helping run golf clinics. - WITH FILES FROM JEREMY SANDLER, POSTMEDIA NETWORK
hey came from all parts of the world. Rugby fans flocked to Abbotsford in droves this past weekend for the 2010 Abbotsford Rugby Sevens, adding a real international flavour to this year’s event. They came from Kenya; they came from Fiji, as well as a number of other places from around the globe. Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario, California and even Florida license plates dotted the parking lot at Rotary Stadium where this year’s event was held. They came to enjoy the food, the music and the beer. But most of all, they came to enjoy the sport of rugby and the camaraderie that comes with it. “I think it’s good people from other par ts of the world are here,” said Waisale Tikoisolomoni Serevi, arguably the biggest name worldwide in rugby sevens and the star attraction of this year’s event in Abbotsford. “[Politics] divides people. Religion divides people. The one thing good about sport is it brings people together. Whatever race you are, sport brings the people together and that’s what I enjoy about it.” see RUGBY, page A26

And although the fans didn’t seem to have a particular favourite at times, it was two Canadian teams that drew the highest acclaim and earned the top tournament honours. Valley High, a group of Team Canada players based out of Victoria, narrowly defeated Canada Maple Leafs by a score of 29-26 in the International Cup Final.
Canada as a whole. The South Africa team defeated the Fiji Bayside Ambassadors in the International Plate Final 21-17. South Africa advanced to the final after the team from Kenya, dropped out of the competition. The Ambassadors were given a boost earlier in the week when Serevi, a legend in the sport, announced he would play for his country in Abbotsford. “It’s good to play with young players. At the moment I’m 42-yearsold, but I’m still enjoying running around,” he joked.

It may have a bitter pill to swallow for Abbotsford’s Kurtis Appeldoorn, who plays for the Maple Leafs, but it was well worth it. “It’s an awesome experience being able to have guys I play with around the country and guys from around the world come to Abbotsford and play in a great Sevens tournament,” he said. “I feel like a host as well as a player when I’m here and it’s nice to show the guys around town.” He added the Abbotsford Rugby Sevens event shows just how popular rugby is becoming, not only in Abbotsford or B.C., but throughout
