grand procession of vehicles, featuring fire trucks with sirens blaring, wound its way through the city Saturday morning to the Abbotsford Food Bank with over a thousand boxes of goods. Deputy Fire Chief Mike Helmer was all smiles. “We had a lot of drivers honking. People knew

something good was happening,” said Helmer. “[The fire department] had a lot of fun, our partners had a lot of fun and people along the road enjoyed the show.” As well as Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service, parade participants also included a number of FraserValley Auto Mall dealerships and a Save-on Foods semitrailer full of non-perishable food items. The successful food drive was a joint effort by all the participants. Auto mall dealers challenged each other to raise $1000 each to purchase groceries from Nov. 18 to Dec. 19 and collected non-perishables at their businesses. Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service auxiliary firefight-

ers donated $1,000 and collected food donations from neighbourhoods throughout the city. Save-on Foods supplied non-perishable goods at cost to the auto mall dealers and provided the semi-trailer. The total cost for the 1,100 cases of food came to $11,000. This is the second year AFRS has collaborated with community partners for its food drive, said Helmer. The partnership has proven so successful that plans for a food drive and parade are already in the works for the coming year. “Next year we’re going to make it even bigger and better,” said Helmer.

finding proper childcare providers. The message comes after the APD recently received several complaints from parents in the community about a man in his 40s approaching

both children and parents about a daycare service he was providing, said Const. Ian MacDonald. “We don’t have a criminal offence here, but we feel it is our job to inform the public that this has hap-

pened,” MacDonald said, adding the man has been identified by police. “Additionally, in talking to some parents, not everybody recognizes

It set out to determine the best options for transit services within the region and to link up with Metro Vancouver. Centre faces tough Christmas

Mission for youth hit with higher demand and drop in its donations

Briefly Man shot in grow-rip Mission RCMP is investing a violent grow-rip on Tuesday night that left one man suffering gunshot wounds. Five male suspects broke into a home in the 29900 block of Dewdney Trunk Road in Mission around 9 p.m. The home invaders restrained and shot the occupant of the house before making off in an unidentified vehicle with cash, three guns and a quantity of marijuana that was being grown on the property, said police. The victim is expected to recover from his injuries. The attack appears targeted and the larger public is not believed to be at risk, said RCMP officials. t’s a Thursday night and the smell of roasted turkey wafts through Abbotsford’s Cyrus Centre, a drop-in facility for at risk and marginalized youth. Around 25 teens sit around tables and play cards or yack with one another while waiting for the hot meal served daily at the centre. In the kitchen, another group of youth from the South Abbotsford Church are serving up plates of turkey, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce. Youth pastor Jon Wiebe supervises the process, while cradling his infant son Ayden in his arms. “We’re here every other Thursday,” said Wiebe, adding the church’s youth group volunteers in an effort to serve its community. “We love the Cyrus Centre because it’s a beacon of hope and light in our community, and we want it to succeed. I also like the idea of youth helping their peers.” When dinner is called, there is a mini-stampede to the kitchen counter. As quickly as it has formed, the knot of youth unwinds and the teens return to the tables with their meals. Youth worker Luisa Martinez-Salazar says the organization has a full house every night for dinner. The mission serves an average of 30 to 40 youth daily and 8,000 meals annually. “We’re up from even five months ago,” she said. “We used to serve lunch every other day or so, but we started serving lunch every day because the need is so great.” The centre is a resource for youth aged 13 to 18 who might be ensnared by homelessness, the drug scene, abusive families, sexual abuse or perhaps poverty. Teens can access shelter, clothing, shower and laundry facilities, and outreach services at the centre. Many of the kids coming to dinner have homes, but little food in the

Although living independently at a young age is a challenge, Brian says it’s a learning process and preferable to his past situation. “I’d probably be off track,” he said. “Cyrus Centre and the workers’ support was a big deal to me . . . I’d be going in a different direction. I could be in foster care instead.” Regardless of the financial pressures faced at the centre, it is still planning its annual Christmas dinner on Dec. 25. “We’re hoping to provide each youth with a gift and a sit-down Christmas dinner that day, a turkey with all the fixings, Martinez-Salazar said. “It’s important because the kids might not be able to have that at home.”

Santa’s helpers were out in full force last weekend at the West Coast Express Mission City Station, in an effort to give needy kids throughout the valley a Merry Christmas. Volunteers for several different Christmas bureaus throughout the Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley collected nearly 2,000 toys on Dec. 11 for the West Coast Express Santa Train. Volunteers in Mission collected 1,188 toys, roughly 59 per cent of all toys collected at the four designated stops, which included Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver, Tri-Cities, and Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows. Mission commuters of the high-speed train also donated $120 in donations. “If there is one thing we know after 14 years of hosting the Santa Train is that West Coast

Global Spectrum, the Philadelphiabased company under contract by the city to run the AESC, publicly announced Jason Blumenfeld as the chosen candidate at the end of November. Blumenfeld has six years experience in the industry. The AESC got off to a rocky start in its first year of operations, racking up a $2 million deficit according to city estimates - the result of opening during an economic recession, fewer event bookings at the arena, and less than expected corporate ticket sales for the Abbotsford Heat AHL team. “Most market’s I’ve managed are challenging,” said the 30-year-old Blumenfeld of the obstacles to be overcome and ensure AESC’s success in coming years. “You have to fight for every show. . . It’s the landscape of the whole industry throughout North America.” Blumenfeld came to Abbotsford from the Global Spectrum-managed Glens Falls Civic Center in Glens Falls, New York, a city of just over 14,000 people where he managed the 4,500-seat multipurpose events centre since the company started managing it in 2008. It’s a jump in size to come to the Abbotsford market, with AESC’s 7,000 plus seats and a population of 134,000, but Blumenfeld feels up to the task. In both his previous positions he learned to compete and draw crowds from the surrounding regions that had bigger markets and venues. The youngest GM ever to work for Global Spectrum with his appointment at age 26 to the Androscoggin Bank Colisée in Lewiston, Maine in 2006, Blumenfeld says he loves his work. “It’s my third venue,” he said. “I started off as an intern and worked my way up to GM in little more than six years. events will draw crowds to the arena. Well aware Country and Christian based events fill the house, he wants to explore what else will appeal to the market. “I’m committed to doing my due diligence with the city, listening to people and talking to everyone I can,” said Blumenfeld. He plans to capitalize on resources available to him through Global Spectrum headquarters in Philadelphia, and create a “synergy” with the two B.C. arenas operated by the company in Penticton and Dawson Creek, and south of the border in Everett, Wash. An avid hockey fan, Blumenfeld is looking forward to working with the Heat. He’s had experience partnering with AHL teams when he helped bring the Adirondack Phantoms to Glen Falls. Abbotsford city manager Frank Pizutto said the expectations for the AESC and its new manager are straightforward. “Jason’s the person we rely on to step into the city’s shoes at AESC and make it successful, and we have every reason to believe he’ll do that,” said Pizutto.

Under its contract with the city, Global Spectrum is responsible for event management at AESC, food and beverage operations and corporate ticket sales for the Heat, the arena’s cornerstone tenant. “Part of Jason’s job will be to see that there is more uptake on the entertainment side,” said Pizutto. The second part is to ensure the different sections at the AESC such as the food service, entertainment, ticket system, and corporate sales work in tandem towards the arena’s success. “And to make sure the relationship between Global Spectrum and the Heat is a good one,” added Pizutto. The company’s contract with the city has performance indicators in place, he said. “Global Spectrum has to submit budgets on a yearly basis and meet them.” The city is working over a draft copy of the 2011 budget, said Pizutto, adding the final draft will likely be released in late January or February. “We’re working through it right now to make sure it make sense for both parties.”

he last time the Manitoba Moose came to town for a weekend date with the Abbotsford Heat, Finnegan’s Pub and Grill, and the Phoenix Lounge were full inside and boasted massive lineups outside. The fact both games drew higher than usual crowds and its proximity to the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre, which is right next door to the duel food and beverage establishment, certainly helped bring in a steady stream of business that weekend, said general manager Paul Esposito Jr. It also helps the twogame series, which ran Nov. 26 and 27, was on a weekend. “Obviously when the games are on Friday and Saturday, more people are intoned for going out for dinner or possibly having some beverages before or after the game,” said Esposito. “During the week, it’s really hit or miss. “There’s a lot of variables that play into it, but obviously there is a lot of hype when the Moose come to town.” But last month’s HeatMoose two-game confrontation at the AESC, which drew close to 13,000 fans in total, wasn’t the only major

event Finnegan’s and the Phoenix Lounge cashed in on. The Georges St-Pierre versus Josh Koscheck Ultimate Fighting Championship Light Heavyweight title bout, one of the most anticipated pay-per-view scraps of the season for the popular mixed martial arts governing body, had Finnegan’s hovering around its 200-person capacity all night. Esposito said that given it was fall and not summer when UFC 124 took place on Dec. 11, a lot more people were in town to check it out. “It’s that time of year,” he said. “That has a lot to do with it. When you put a big fight in the summer time and we find in Abbotsford and the Fraser Valley that people tend to go away. “You don’t get the same amount of turnout, but typically in the fall and winter months, people stay at home are looking for entertainment options.” While being right next door to the AESC does help business, especially when the Heat are playing or there is a big concert, Esposito said both enterprises are trying to build an individual identity with the community. “We try to focus on our own business and business model,” said Esposito. “There are some events, because of the cliental going to the event, our facility works for them and then there are some events that could be sold out and we don’t see any customers.”

ow that the NDP has picked a date to choose its new leader, you can expect candidates to start declaring themselves fairly soon, and I expect the field will be at least as crowded as the B.C. Liberal leadership race. Of course, given the serious divide that has fractured the NDP, it’s hard to see why anyone would even want the job of leader. And now that the party may have fumbled a good chance of winning the next election, there’s a good possibility that whoever wins the race will simply look at years of Opposition status, rather than a move into the premier’s office. But someone has to take over from Carole James, and already a number of names have surfaced as potential successors. It’s a little early to handicap the race, given that the vote is not until April 17 and whomever the B.C. Liberals choose as their leader will have a big impact on which candidate the New Democrats eventually choose. Still, let’s look at a few of the potential aspirants:

MIKE FARNWORTH: According to a couple of polls, he has a decided edge with the public and ranks among the highest with NDP voters. Definitely a front-runner if he decides to run, Farnworth is a likeable, respected MLA who has served in government as a cabinet minister and has performed well as the NDP’s house leader. But Farnworth is also very

From the Ledge much a political centrist, whose views are identical to those held by the outgoing James. Once this fact dawns on the NDP members, support for Farnworth may dissipate rather quickly. The party’s members are likely to be more left-wing, and may have a hard time embracing yet another James-like centrist. As well, the notorious Gang of 13 dissidents – who do not abide by democratic rule, remember – may turn on Farnworth simply for his strong support of the woman they knocked off. And this may be a problem plaguing other would-be candidates, such as: JOHN HORGAN: A former aide in the NDP government of the 1990s, Horgan is one of the strongest MLAs in the NDP caucus. He can be quite aggressive, particularly with those who don’t see things his way, and that may make it difficult for him to broaden any support he may have in the party. ADRIAN DIX: Like Horgan, he was also a former aide in the NDP government (he was Glen Clark’s chief of staff) and is another strong performer in the caucus. His enemies will try to use

his close association with Clark against him, but I don’t think that will have much traction with party members. Dix’s biggest weakness, though, is that he is not a great communicator and isn’t known for strong speech-making. GEORGE HEYMAN: The former head of the B.C. Government Employees Union, Heyman is a good orator who performed well when the BCGEU was dealing with big cutbacks during the B.C. Liberals’ first term. He’s currently executive director of the Sierra Club, which cuts him some street cred with the environmentalists in the party. But he’s still a bit of an outsider, and private sector union members in the NDP can’t be counted on to necessarily support a former public sector union boss. HARRY LALI: While at first blush it would seem Lali is at best a long-shot, keep in the mind that the NDP will pick its next leader using the one member/one vote system, which makes the ability of signing up new members a critical strength. The Indo-Canadian community, for example, is passionate about politics and getting involved in campaigns, which may give Lali a significant advantage over the other candidates. So that’s the early assessment. Other candidates will no doubt step forward in the coming weeks, but don’t assume anyone has the magic touch when it comes to healing the internal strife in the party.

s the BC Liberal Party race to replace Premier Gordon Campbell heats up, proposals that are arising could affect electors of all political stripes throughout B.C. Candidate Christy Clark, for instance, has hinted that she might move the province quickly into general election mode, to allow all voters – not just BC Liberals – to elect their premier. She’s not even a sitting MLA right now. But her argument speaks against tradition. More usually, a sitting BC Liberal in a safe riding would step aside for her. Opposition parties traditionally have respected such a move, and contest the seat less vigorously than in a by-election or general election. With the resignation of BC NDP leader Carole James, Clark’s suggestion is more reminiscent of W.A.C. Bennett’s decimation of his right-wing opposition by calling an election while they were leaderless and in disarray, 60 years ago. He parlayed his advantage into decades of Social Credit rule. It took the BC Liberals 40 years to recover, and the BC Conservatives remain on the political fringe. Clark may be thinking she can similarly pull a fast one on today’s NDP. Either way, it would put paid to B.C.’s fixed-election-date legislation – not a terrific legal hurdle, as demonstrated by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who instituted similar legislation and promptly ignored it. But unlike the federal case, B.C. held to its legislation through at least one election, and the change could result in voter backlash against Clark. Meanwhile, candidate Mike de Jong has proposed, with candidate George Abbott’s subsequent support, looking into lowering the voting age in B.C. to 16 years. Who knows what other concepts may emerge as the New Democrats start gearing up their drive to pick a new leader?

As a longtime resident of Abbotsford. I am upset at the waste of tax dollars spent on rarely used bike lanes. On top of that, the flagrant disregard for the rules of the road displayed by these riders, and the fact they mostly wear dark clothing that is difficult to spot through rain splattered glass at night. In Montreal in the 60s, a bike had to have a yearly licence plate ($2.14) to use the road. Sidewalks were forbidden. Serial numbers were kept by police, and checked if you were stopped. For use at night you had to have a lit front white light, and a lit red tailight. (not relector). If not and you were stopped by police, your bike was impounded, and you got a ticket. Failure to use hand signals, stop for signs or red lights (and wait), was a ticket. Use the road, obey the laws just like a car. There are good laws, especially needed here with all the rain. So when are we going to move into this century? Ticket the walkers who also do what they like on the road. Dennis Cook Abbotsford

We potentially face an election of Bill Vander Zalm, the shining white knight of the anti-HST crusade versus Christie Clark – put your own title to this. Both were an embarrassment to their parties and left “for the good of the party.” Start dealing honestly with the issues and people will vote. Start living in a democratic world and people will vote. Start earning the trust of the people (remember them?)

The B.C. culture of ‘voting against what you don’t want’ is not good democracy, and like all second-rate systems, the people have gotten tired of it. Buckerfield’s hosted Pet Pictures with Santa November 27th, with all proceeds going to the Abbotsford SPCA. We had more than 40 dogs, several cats, miniature horses, baby goats and one very cute rat in attendance this year. Each had a chance to bark/purr/ whinny/sniff and baaa in Santa’s ear to let him know what they wanted under the tree for Christmas. The event raised $745 for the animals in our care. I would like to thank our Santas Bob Obradovich and Jason Strijack. They received some much-needed canine cheer and also a few purrs from the cats that were brave enough to sit on Santa’s lap. There was no horsing around for the miniatures. They came in strutting their stuff and knew exactly what they wanted. The kids “baby goats” were especially good as it was their first Christmas and as for the rat he whispered in Santa’s ear and promised not to nibble on things he

I do not believe your recent article regarding the results of Internet polls are indicative of local opinion or the support for MLA Mike de Jong. You might note that Internet polls can be hijacked by special interest groups. Because of this, polls are not necessarily local opinion. Anyone from anywhere in the province can vote and skew the results. In addition, the article did not say how many people actually voted, so how are we to know the validity of the results? Mike de Jong has what it takes to be Premier. For many years he has been highly productive in advocating our needs in Victoria and brought the results home to our community. How about an article profiling his successes? Dear Chef Dez: I have heard and known that it is best to keep pie pastry as cold as possible to prevent melting the butter and shortening pieces. What is the best way of doing this? Douglas C. Langley

Dear Douglas: The best way of doing this is to first focus on your ingredients. Make sure you are using ice water instead of cold water, and frozen butter grated into the flour mixture is ideal. The frozen butter particles then are already the required size from the grater and will not suffer from the warm friction of too much mixing or “cutting” it in. Secondly, try not to touch

the dough with your hands, as the warmth from them will melt the butter. It is best to form the dough by folding it over consistently with a metal dough cutter (bench scraper). Once the dough is formed, wrap and place it in the refrigerator until thoroughly chilled. Remove and proceed with rolling, ideally on a chilled marble surface. Once shaped, refrigerate for approximately 10 more minutes before baking. I have even heard that using vodka from the freezer (instead of the ice water in your recipe) will produce a flakier crust. ■ Chef Dez is a food columnist,

he fondest memory I have from my childhood is one that I hold dear to my heart. Fitted with an over-sized apron and a smile from ear to ear, I was six years old on a stool rolling out pie pastry along side my mom. While she made the large pies for the family, I rolled out pastry for miniature imitations formed to the confines of empty, metal chip-dip containers. I was very proud and happy to be a part of the preparation for such a wonderful treat. Pies are a very traditional way to end a meal on certain holidays throughout the year, and especially at Christmas time. Pumpkin is always a favourite pie among many for the holidays, but numerous different pies can and will be made and enjoyed. Pies are basically made up of a shell or crust, with a flavourful filling, and can be divided into two groups: baked or unbaked. Baked pies are obviously ones with raw pie shells that are filled and then baked. The unbaked category represents prebaked pie shells that are filled with a prepared filling and then chilled to set before serving. The pie dough that makes up these shells can also be divided into two categories: flaky dough or mealy dough. Flaky dough is usually a pastry that has a mixture of shortening and butter that is “cut in” so that there are small chunks still left in the finished product. This aids in creating steam, which helps with the leavening process and thus creating the flaky texture. Mealy dough is one that is usually made with butter that is mixed in more thoroughly, and when baked has a texture much like tender shortbread. This is because the flour particles are more coated with fat and thus less gluten is formed. Once you have decided on the type of crust to make, it is time to decide on the filling. Basically there are four choices: fruit, custard, cream or chiffon. All fillings require the existence of a starch or stabilizer to ensure that it holds together when sliced. Fruit and cream fillings use starches, such as cornstarch for their stability, while custard filling use the stabilization of eggs coagulation for their firmness. Examples of custard pies are ones such as pumpkin, pecan and key lime pies. Chiffon pies usually use a combination of starch or gelatin with whipped egg whites folded in.

While no charges have been laid, police have had three conversations with the man based on the parental reaction pertaining to more than one incident. MacDonald said on one such occasion, the man brazenly approached an eightyear-old girl who was playing at a park with her mother nearby. The man walked up to the girl and handed her a business card with information about his childcare services, which prompted the mother to contact Abbotsford police. “Basically the mother sees a man in his

40s unattached to the children playing in the park, sees the man walk up to the child and gives her something,” said MacDonald, adding he would also be concerned if a stranger did the same thing to his children. The mother has filed a complaint with police. MacDonald added that he does not believe the man has a criminal background, but his previous interactions with police

New Heights Street Hope Ministries is seeking volunteers and donations for its Christmas Day dinner for Mission’s homeless, lonely or low-income families. Goddard pleads guilty Abby man to appear next in court on Feb. 21 Suspected sexual offender Jeff Goddard has pleaded guilty to four, of his close to 20 charges. Goddard, 20, was charged with sexual touching in May after an alleged incident involving a 14-year-old boy. Police investigators believe the pair conversed over the phone and over the Internet before meeting face-to-face in March. He was charged again with breaching bail in August after being seen in a local store

with two youths. At the end of November Goddard racked another series of charges including six counts of impersonating a police officer, six more breach charges and one count of communicating with a computer to lure a child under 16. He pleaded guilty to two counts of breach, one count of luring a child via computer and one count of impersonating an officer in Abbotsford provincial court on Friday. He will next appear in court on Feb. 21 for a pre-sentencing and psychological report.

Heat forward hasn’t been back for Christmas in nine years

Heat forward Matt Keith will finally be back in his home town of Aldergrove for the holidays, after a nine-year absence being on the road with the AHL.

att Keith doesn’t seem like the kind of guy who would turn up the song I’ll Be Home For Christmas, but he might want to do that this year. The 27-year-old Aldergrove product hasn’t been home for the holidays in nine years thanks to his days playing with American Hockey League teams on the U.S. eastern seaboard or in Europe. That has finally changed. He’ll now have a chance to relax and see loved ones, a welcomed relief given his almost vagrant hockey career. “It’s pretty incredible,” he said Monday after the team practised at MSA Arena following a five-game road trip. “It’s nice. Last year I had a chance to come home but I had to fly out on Christmas morning and we’re fortunate with the way our schedule is. I know my family is excited that I get to be here and it’s a nice feeling to be around this time of year.” And for all the guys out there who haven’t really bitten into their share of Christmas shopping yet – Keith is in the same daunting boat. “I got a couple of things on the road, I don’t know what to get my parents,” Keith sheepishly admitted. “I outdid myself a couple of years when I was in Germany, I got them a cuckoo clock that was made in the Black Forest and I don’t know what to get them now.”

Staying at home with family and friends this Christmas will be a welcomed occurrence for Keith, the Heat’s leading scorer. But he will also try to focus his attention on how he can help lead this upstart young team back into the win column. Abbotsford dropped three of four games on this most recent road trip

to the eastern U.S. – one of those losses coming in overtime – and have scored just seven goals in their last five games. Four of those have been losses, and given how tight the North Division standings are – seven teams separated by just nine points – the Heat can ill afford to go on a prolonged slump and slide.

“It’s frustrating,” said Keith, whose goal Saturday against the Adirondack Phantoms snapped an eightgame drought for the forward. “Our team is so structured and I think there’s such demand for detail from our coaches, they really break things down and you never go on the ice and not know what you’re supposed to do.

“I don’t think I’ve struggled, but I haven’t produced and you start to put pressure on yourself, get frustrated, but you realize as you get older that it’s not about sitting and worrying about it. “I know what I have to do to get out of it and I hope by scoring Saturday night was a sign of things to come.”

Coaching is a complex issue says Heat coach M

ention Jim Playfair’s name to anyone in the circles of pro hockey, and the one constant adjective often used to describe his coaching is “passion.” Playfair, the Abbotsford Heat head coach, can be as much an emotional fellow as he is calculating and orientated towards team structure. The world got a glimpse of that last spring when Playfair visibly disagreed with a call by referee Jamie Koharski. What ensued was a 28-

But given the scope of it all – several versions on the popular website YouTube, and more than two million views – it seemed of interest to at least get Playfair’s perspective on Washington Capitals’ head coach Bruce Boudreau’s profanity-laced, F-bomb inclusive speech he delivered to his players on the HBO documentary, 24/7. Was it real? Was it a show for the cameras? Is that an effective method of coach-

ing? Playfair described his take on it as “nothing,” but then elaborated, saying that the raw, uncensored footage was as real as it gets inside the dressing room of a professional hockey team. It’s one of those things media personnel salivate over. A coach, or a player, putting critical thought into expletive form as opposed to the usual ‘We didn’t execute’, is industry gold. Hockey is an emotional game, but if you go beyond the thrill of watching a

he Abbotsford Pilots haven’t flown through the smoothest of skies for about the past month, but that seems to have changed recently as the team heads into the Christmas break. The Pacific International Junior Hockey

League squad started the month of December with three straight losses to coincide with a pair of defeats to end November. The skid didn’t hurt the Pilots overall in the standings – they still sit atop the Harold Brittain Conference – but it gave some of their conference foes like the Port Moody Black Panthers and Ridge Meadows Flames hope of catching Abbotsford. However, the Pilots, often revered for their resilient ways and detested for how they go about their business, seem to have found their previous trajectory as a powerhouse team in the league. Spurred on by a natural hat trick from the

high-flying Riley Lamb and another threegoal game from Bradley Parker, the Pilots thumped the North Delta Devils by a score of 8-2 at MSA Arena Friday to end the five-game losing streak. After a slow start to the season, Lamb has found his pace. The 19-year-old forward now has 20 goals in 27 games this season and is fifth in PIJHL scoring with 42 points, although he has been suspended for Tuesday’s game with Delta after he received a penalty for a hit to the head Sunday. Brad Anderson, the 20-year-old veteran goalie, stopped 24 of 26 shots Friday for his

ninth win of the season. Abbotsford followed Friday’s triumphant win with a comeback effort Sunday afternoon, edging their conference and cross-river rivals, the Mission Icebreakers, 4-3. The Pilots trailed by a goal going into the final period, but scored twice on route to the win. The Pilots will look to go into the Christmas break on a winning note tonight as they face the Delta Ice Hawks in Ladner. The Ice Hawks sit second in the Tom Shaw Conference with 23 wins and just five regulation time losses this season. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m.
