Investigators are releasing images of a suspect caught on surveillance cameras at Abbotsford Regional Hospital and Cancer Centre the afternoon of Oct. 26 after he stole the purse of a 20year-old woman sleeping on a bed in the hallway. The incident merits the police and public’s extra attention, said Const. Ian MacDonald. “We are appalled when offences are perpetrated against the most vulnerable of our society . . . she

olice believe an Abbotsford woman has fallen victim to a sophisticated fraud ring stealing identities and cashing in across the Lower Mainland. Susan Jones, a paramedic with BC Ambulance, had $8,000 drawn on her line of credit after her wallet was stolen in July.

Investigators have released surveillance video images of the woman who posed as Jones, and made three large withdrawals from Bank of Montreal branches in New Westminster and Maple Ridge. She said it was unnerving to see the woman who had stolen her persona. “A lot of anxiety came up. I thought to myself, ‘she has put such a spin on my world,’” said Jones. “It’s creepy. I was left wondering how far this is going to go. Is it finished, or just warming up?” The suspect, wielding Jone’s CareCard and a temporary driver’s licence, actually hit four banks in total that afternoon but was unsuccessful at two of them. Jones was shocked the bank had dealt with her when she had no picture ID. “She’d told them her wallet was stolen,” said Jones “Here I am an honest person say-

for me? It could ruin my life. . . [that licence] is my livelihood.” Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald said investigators suspect a crew of up to 10 individuals may be at work in Abbotsford. The members of the crew likely have different roles, with some stealing identification or cards, others doing research on victims and others creating fake cards and identi-
fication. Abbotsford Police recently arrested two people who might be linked to the crime against Jones and the larger fraud ring. One 39-year-old woman was arrested Nov. 19 after trying to withdraw $2,000 from a Kelowna-based company account at a local chequecashing outlet. see THEFT, page A15
Briefly Fire dept. worried fraud company is burning businesses Abbotsford fire and police departments are investigating a fraudulent company looking to burn local businesses. Individuals purporting to be from a company named Metro Fire Services have approached at least two businesses, Deputy Fire Chief Mike Helmer said in a press release. The individuals ask to inspect and service the business’ fire extinguishers for cash. The company may be fraudulent, as Metro Fire Services does not have a valid City of Abbotsford business license, or the necessary certification to fix fire protection systems or equipment, said Helmer. Businesses should be cautious when people arrive at their doors unannounced and say their fire protection equipment needs attention, said Helmer. People should ask for proof of a valid business license and certification. If there are any concerns or issues with such a request, companies should decline the inspection service and contact the fire department. Anyone with information concerning Metro Fire Services should contact Abbotsford Fire Rescue at 604-853-3566.

A
man who stole three vehicles in one day eluded capture by Abbotsford police by blowing through two spike belts, ditching his badly damaged stolen truck and then commandeering a minivan. The bizarre turn of events started Sunday about 8 a.m. when a Port Coquitlam woman called the APD and reported the GPS coordinates for her stolen Ford F-250 pickup truck put it near Mt. Lehman road, Const. Ian MacDonald said. Officers sent to the scene tried to box-in a vehicle matching the Ford’s description, only to have the truck smash through a marked patrol car attempting to block its escape route. The vehicle in question, it turned out, was not even the stolen F-250. The perpetrator had already ditched that truck in favour of another stolen Ford F-150, MacDonald said. A spike belt laid down by officers managed to blow out two of the truck’s tires. “But that doesn’t dissuade the driver. He just keeps carrying on,” MacDonald said, adding police then set-up vehicles throughout the city to prepare for any possible route the driver may attempt.
Another spike belt deployed near Clearbrook Road, about seven kilometres from the start of events, disables a third tire and now the truck is on three rims, badly damaged, and unable to exceed 15 km/h. “It’s at that point that either the truck completely fails mechanically or he decides this is as far as he can go, and he ditches the truck at Marshall and Clearbrook roads.” Things take a turn for the worse here, MacDonald said. As the driver bolts down a nearby cross street a resident opens his garage door attempting to back his vehicle out. “[The thief] runs inside and basically commandeers the keys away from the owner and takes off in a minivan,” MacDonald said. “Unfortunately for us – we had a dog chasing him – we were several minutes behind and by the time we get to his last location on foot, we’re coming face-to-face with a guy who just had his van stolen. “And that van is gone,” MacDonald conceded. The missing minivan is described as a 2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette.

The safe driving service celebrated 15 years of service and held a birthday bash for mascot Rudy the reindeer at the season launch Friday night. More people than ever took advantage of ORN, which sees volunteers drive clients home in their own cars after they’ve gone out
to celebrate during the holiday season, said co-ordinator Linda Palm. A total of 85 drivers called last Friday and Saturday night, up from a total of 49 drivers in 2009. While the driving service is free, any donations received by clients or sponsors go to PacificSport Fraser Valley. Last year ORN raised a total of $18,000. This year’s target goal is $25,000. “We heard about Fraser’s story from the Fraser Valley Child Development Centre, which donates space bi-weekly to the Fraser Valley Down Syndrome Support Group and, in the spirit of celebration, we wanted to do something to recognize her incredible community contributions,” said Chris De Rhonda, company manager for the cast of Let’s Celebrate! With no Fraser Valley support groups in place for families with a Down syndrome child, Fraser launched one five years ago after growing frustrated with the lack of resources for her family, whose youngest daughter has Down syndrome. Initially, she welcomed parents into
her home or a play-group session, which morphed quickly into a formal support group offering networking potential for not only parents, but children. Today, more than 60 families attend regular meetings and events that include a buddy walk, a Christmas party and a family picnic.

wo local photographers are doing their part to make Christmas special this year for families who need a helping hand. Laura Henderson and Tamara Okoti are putting together an event this Saturday called Help Portrait, with the aim to provide family photographs to people in the community who would not normally be able to afford it. “We found the organization Help Portrait [online], and thought it would be really nice to do it in Abbotsford, so we figured we might as well try,” said Henderson, who has been working with Okoti for about six weeks to get everything in place. “Through Abbotsford Community Services, the Woman’s Resource Centre, Salvation Army, and Big Brothers Big Sisters, we have more than 100 families who are planning to come,” said Henderson. “We also have a team of over 20 volunteers consisting of photographers, editors, hair dressers and makeup artists who are going to be donating their time and talent to pulling off this event.” There will also be a lot of single moms from the Women’s Resource Centre and Best for Babies programs added Henderson, who is also anticipating some families coming at the last minute who have not reserved. Beam us some better transport
W
henever TransLink starts holding out its hand for more money, it gets me thinking about how woefully inadequate our modes of transportation are. I’m not just referring to the woefully inadequate transit system that TransLink has provided – indeed, calling TransLink’s bus service in this neck of the woods woefully inadequate would be a woefully inadequate use of the phrase “woefully inadequate.” And there simply are no descriptors that delve deep enough into woeful inadequacy to describe the “service” to Aldergrove. But transportation in general simply no longer meets the needs of human masses that are forever moving. I look out my office window every day and see roads clogged with poison-spewing vehicles, mostly standing still, waiting for an opportunity to roll forward a few feet before standing still again. And that’s normal. We think nothing of it. Most of us drive around in cars that are far too large for the jobs we ask of them. Even many of those of us who are conscious of the extra pollution created by dragging ourselves around while encased in glass and steel cubicles are stuck with the unnecessary environmental damage we cause. The reality is that, in today’s world, you have to get from

Odd thoughts point A to point B. And you have to do it with an eye on the clock. And you have to do it in a vehicle that may have to take your whole family – plus a couple of dogs, maybe a few 2x4s, a sheet of plywood, and the branches that came down in the latest windstorm – from point A to point B. So when it’s just you in travel mode, most of the work that your transportation machinery is doing is transporting your transportation machinery, instead of transporting you. Even loaded to the hilt, most cars or pick-up trucks weigh significantly more than their loads. And every metre we move every kilogram creates a proportionate amount of pollution. I wish that, when Captain Kirk and his crew came back from the future to save the humpback whales from extinction (in order to save the human race from extinction), Chief Engineer Scotty had left behind plans for that magnificent transporter device – instead of transparent aluminum. Just imagine having Star Trek’s “transporter device” at our dis-
posal. I’d gladly pay some extra property taxes to have transporters strategically located within walking distance, all over the Lower Mainland (including South of the Fraser). Need to pop home because you forgot your wallet? Just beam yourself in and out, and be back at your work station in moments. Forgot to feed your tribble? Hey! Just beam a handful of Antares wheat germ directly into the cuddly little creature’s food dish. Hey, Scotty! Beam yourself back to Earth, our time. We’d like to make a trade. We want an efficient means of transporting ourselves – just ourselves, and not the tons of equipment it currently takes to transport us – to where we want to go. It’s not the whales that will kill us in the end. It’s our woefully inadequate means of transportation that is bound to do us in. Who needs transparent aluminum, anyway? We could make better and stronger plastics from the oil we wouldn’t have to burn, if we could just turn ourselves into energy and get beamed to wherever we want to go.

But whether the problems are in political leadership, or lack thereof, push-back in bureaucracy, staff changeover or a failure to simply follow through – there is simply no adequate excuse for failing to complete this project. $77.5M in prison funding is money well spent Editor, the Times:
The parting words, “The safety of Canadians comes first” spoken by Public Safety Minister Vic Toews, in his speech at a Press Conference at the Pacific Institution Treatment Centre in Abbotsford last Monday ($77M locked in for prisons, Times, Nov. 30), sound like music in my ears. Minister Vic Toews and our own Ed Fast, chair of the Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights, skillfully explained the government’s law and order agenda and the decision to add 362 beds at local prisons. The government’s effort to keep violent repeat offenders behind bars and create a system to treat the mental and behavioural needs of others, is praise worthy indeed. I believe every soul on earth is meant to live in peace and happiness. But for whatever reason triggered these folks to commit awful, life-altering criminal activities, they too must face the consequences of their actions. Personally, I wish that some day soon, such incarcerated human beings could be offered a chance to contribute to society in some positive way by making furniture or green house gardening for starters, perhaps. Some other countries make their prisoners earn their own keep at least. But for now, Vic Toews and Ed Fast deserve sincere thanks for their hard work in landing this new venture in fighting crime. Yes, finally the welcome words, “ The Safety of Canadians comes first “ were spoken loud and clear by sincere, compassionate folks who mean business. Re: Karen Gardner’s Another reader sad to see Dunach go, Times, Nov. 26. While I agree with Ms. Gardner that closing Dunach Elementary is unfortunate, I for one agree with the decision made by the school board and the ministry. It is possible that making the school a school of choice could have brought in more students; I think that it would be very improbable. Dunach was a small school to begin with, and was surrounded by other, much bigger schools of choice: MEI for example. There is no guarantee that enrolment would’ve increased if Dunach would’ve been changed and if it did, the increase could have taken many years, and a lot of funding. Focusing that money to other programs in the long run will be the best idea. I believe that while the school board and the ministry do have some faults, “grossly mismanaged” is a little harsh and I think there is another option to be considered: these people have to satisfy hundreds upon hundreds of families and are doing the best they can. School closures will happen; if it wasn’t Dunach, it would’ve been another school. Meagan Dowedoff Abbotsford
George Peary has served Abbotsford for over 28 years as school administrator in School District #34, helping thousands of young people prepare for life beyond educational institutions. Peary has six years of experience working with Matsqui Police Board, eighteen years on council and two and one half years on the Abbotsford Board of Education. He has also worked as a business instructor at the University of the Fraser Valley. It is understandable how people can assume that Peary did not consider the public’s opinion before increasing taxes. One cannot blame only Peary for the tax increase; he is advised by the councillors and other aides. Therefore it would be false to assume that the mayor made a decision without considering the views of the others. The six new officers the Abbotsford Police Department (APD) is looking to hire will fill the gaps caused over the past few years, when officers were moved to areas identified as priorities. Considering the mayor’s resume, he understands the police need more resources, especially with all the new growth and infrastructural changes. It can be argued that the councillors and mayor should cut costs relating to free up taxpayer money

On the brighter side of Black Friday I
once again found myself in the thick of things on Black Friday, the busiest shopping day of the year for the United States and as a result had a few moments to reflect on my own selfishness. Our family makes an annual pilgrimage to the Portland area to celebrate American Thanksgiving with friends. The name, Black Friday, apparently comes from Philadelphia, City of Brotherly Love, where in 1966 it was first used by the police to describe the streets, stores and sidewalks as they were being flooded by enthusiastic Christmas shoppers. Soon after that, it was applied to the point in the fiscal calendar when retailers start making money and saw their ledger balances move into the black. More recently the day has been associated with the start of the Christmas shopping season and the sometimes unfortunate result of greed gone wrong. Stories of
people being trampled to death as rushing crowds fight for the best deals only reinforce that this day may be Black for other reasons as well. I personally found it to be an interesting litmus test of my own self-centeredness. Whether it was fighting for a good parking spot, wondering why the checkout line I was in was not moving faster or simply being preoccupied with what I would like to buy, it all came down to one thing – me. Maybe it really is just me, but then again, maybe not. You might not be focused on buying things just for yourself, but it probably is not too a far stretch to think that you are buying some things for other people because you think you have to; or because you want people to have a favourable view of you; or maybe because you want some presents in return. It is all too easy to teach our kids and ourselves the wrong message at

Faith that matters Christmas. It is not about us at all, yet we are too easily preoccupied with ourselves and our self-made expectations. The Christmas message has become the opposite of the Christmas messenger. The Apostle Paul’s words to the church in Philippi were helpful to remind me of the true focus of this time of year. Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too.
You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being.When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. (Philippians 2:3-8, NLT) These words can remind all of us that Jesus is the reason, the template and source of what Christmas is all about. It is about others, and I don’t just mean buying thing for others. It is about recognizing your self-centred tendencies and how they get in the way of us being with and really getting to know others. When we are preoccupied with ourselves we not only have little time for others, but other people can really start to bug
us with their interruptions and their needs. Why is the Christmas season such a miserable time for many people? Because of preoccupation with self. This is so contrary to who Jesus is. He came to get to know us, to make the Father known to us and invite us to get to know him! Christmas is a time to reflect on the fact that God has chosen to dwell among us, get to know us at a great cost and all while we still viewed him as our enemy. Black Friday may usher in a time of consumption and self-focus, yet it pales in significance to what it points to – a bright morning star and indescribable selflessness. od requires us to forgive. Ephesians 4:23–32 says, “Be renewed in the spirit of your mind. “Put on the new man which was created according to God, in righteousness and true holiness. Therefore, putting away lying, each one speak truth with his neighbour, for we are members of one another. Be angry and do not sin. “Do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil. Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather, let him labour working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need. “Let no corrupt commu-
nication proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification that it may impart grace to the hearers. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. “Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ also forgave you.” According to this Scripture when we do not forgive, we give place to the devil. This means that we allow him to torment us. The other thing we do when we refuse to forgive is we grieve the Holy Spirit and we lose our sense of peace.

Seek the right assistance
We lose our presence of mind, our ability to think clearly and our self-control. Salvation is unconditional but when we refuse to forgive, it blocks our relationship with God. The anointing of the Spirit and our intimacy with Him are hindered. When you refuse to forgive, God stands back and lets you cope with your problems in your own strength. The Bible says the backslider is “filled with his own ways” (Prov. 14:14.) Then you begin to compromise all sorts of things relating to money, sex, and integrity. You may need a wake-up call like the Prodigal Son who eventually “came to his senses” (Luke 15:17). Forgiveness involves refusing to punish. Isaiah 58:9 tells us that God blesses the one who does away with the pointing of the finger (being the judge). We may need to talk to someone about it for therapeutic reasons, but choose this person very carefully. This person must be trustworthy and never repeat your words to anyone else. True forgiveness involves being merciful and gracious. Graciousness is withholding certain facts you know to be true, so as to leave your enemy’s reputation untouched. In Genesis 45:1 Joseph waited to reveal his identity until there was no one in the room except his brothers. Joseph did this because he did not want a single person in Egypt to know what his brothers had done to him twenty-two years before. We’re inclined to tell everyone we know about what that person did to us in order to make them look bad. We want to hurt their credibility or reputation in return for hurting us. One primary cause of an unforgiving
spirit is self-righteousness. When we understand the magnitude of the sins of which we were forgiven, we cannot help but be grateful for what God has done, and it becomes easier to forgive others. We are told in Luke 6:37 “Do not judge and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” 1 Peter 3:9 confirms this by saying, “Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.” Matthew 7:3-5 tells us to get the plank out of our own eye first then we may see clearly to get the speck of sawdust our of your brother’s eye. There will be times in which we should help to remove the “specks” from the eyes of our brothers, but only when we have dealt with the issues of our heart. We tend to get upset over small issues (the “speck of dust”), in another person’s life and yet so easily overlook the big issues (the “plank”) in our own lives. The planks in our eyes cause poor eyesight. A person who has a serious sexual weakness, for example, will almost certainly not be able to help the person who comes to them with the same problem. The next time you are tempted not to forgive, remember how gracious your heavenly father has been to you by offering forgiveness.

Not allowing East Indians was a surprise to many

nock knock. Who’s there? Sorry, no East Indians allowed. Yes, it’s true. That’s what I encountered last week when I was making booking arrangements to attend a Christmas party in Surrey via telephone. The polite lady asked me if I was East Indian and I replied, “yes”. She said: “sorry, we’re not allowing East Indians at this party.” I kind of thought it was funny at first. But, it started to bother me a few days later. Let’s say this wasn’t the first time for me and I am sure it won’t be the last. So, to take some of the frustrations away, I posted this on my Facebook. Well, in a matter of a few hours, I had a lengthy stream of comments faster than I could push the reply button. Some of my friends found it hard to believe that this still exists. I guess for many they just don’t see it. I view it first hand constantly with the feedback I receive. A few of my so-called friends challenged me to prove this. I wasn’t in a position to broadcast the address around the world. How childish and foolish that would be. And I wasn’t looking for revenge, either. So, I posted the six worst letters I could find in my e-mail box from readers to prove my point. Well, that created a whole new avenue of discussion and opened many eyes. This was the first time I have done such a thing. What I clearly discovered was when we speak about a “cultural divide” it’s a generational topic. Youth clearly view it differently than adults. Kids
in high school still see it as “us against them” and adults generally want to find ways to build bridges. But, don’t judge me based on the actions of a few. Painting everyone with the same brush is something we all need to avoid, including me. Speaking of brushes, one Abbotsford resident is using her camera to challenge social stereotypes. Deesh Sekhon is involved with Help-Portrait, a community of photographers that are taking portraits individuals and families who otherwise couldn’t afford them. Sekhon is working to provide positive images of people within the community. This is about giving back – giving a family or individual something they may never had before said Sekhon. Candlelight parade
The 27th annual Mission Candlelight Parade takes place tonight at 7:30 p.m. The parade starts at Horn and Railway streets and goes west down First Avenue to the Lougheed Highway, ending at the Cedar Valley Connector. Colourful floats, marching bands, dancers and Santa Claus will be part of the parade. Bring a food donation for the Mission Food Bank and Christmas Bureau.

outh Unmasked is a one-hour play written and performed by Abbotsford youths about self-worth and beauty as experienced through the eyes of youth. It makes powerful commentary on everything from bullying to body image. “The cast and crew that evolved for Unmasked is in itself inter-generational, bringing together people from ages 14 – 30. They have created a thought-provoking show in the format of a ‘Curator’s Talk’ that includes brilliant pieces in dance, drama and spoken
word,” said artistic director Lee Kwidzinski. Youth Unmasked debuts on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. at The Reach Gallery Museum, 32388 Veterans Way, Abbotsford. There is also a matinee on Sunday, Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. Due to the format of the show, audience members should be prepared to move from scene to scene. hile the sport of rock climbing may not be in the main stream, it is a passion for many young climbers who practise and train several times a week honing their skills. And that time has paid off for members of Project Climbing Centre in Abbotsford, who recently came back from a bouldering competition in Coquitlam with some hardware and bragging rights to boot. “They exceeded my expectations,” said coach Tara Boudreau, of her nine protégées. “They’ve been climbing for a little over a year and they totally blew me out of the water with how they performed.” Climbers from Abbotsford and Mission competed in the competition at Cliffhanger Climbing Gym in mid-November and in the 11-andunder division, both Sophie Buitendyk, 10, and Isaac Yeomans, 10, came away with first place finishes. “[Sophie is] super tiny, a really small girl but she’s really, really strong,” said Boudreau. “She’s super dedicated, she climbs even when she doesn’t have to come in for team training.” Buitendyk, who goes to school in Mission, started climbing at the age of eight and absolutely loves it. She climbs at the gym five times a week, and even at the age of 10, has set a lofty goal for herself. “I want to be in the Olympics,” she said. Yeomans, who’s home-schooled in Mission, started climbing when he was five and has been seriously training for about two years. “Last year he finished third, so this is a definite improvement,” said Boudreau, who starts coaching youngsters when they turn eight. One of the pros of the sport of indoor climbing is self-esteem. “It’s a confidence booster. When they can see their improvement and measure it, they just love it,” she said. “It’s a basic human movement,
it’s like climbing on a playground. They know how to move their bodies on the wall.” Rock climbing focuses on problem solving, where the climber has to figure out how to do the moves and get from the bottom to the top. “It requires a lot of dedication and self motivation on the part of the climber,” added Boudreau. The coaches also competed, with Boudreau placing 4th in women’s advanced and Brock Tilling was 5th in men’s advanced.
Heat Teddy bear toss & family night The Abbotsford Heat in conjunction with the Abbotsford Lions Club will be supporting the Abbotsford Food Bank with their annual Teddy Bear Toss on Friday, Dec. 10 for a special family night at the Abbotsford Entertainment and Sports Centre.
Fans are asked to bring a new Teddy bear and also a non-perishable food item for the local food bank. Bears can also be purchased at the game (value $5-10). All the bears and stuffed toys will then be tossed on the ice when the

Heat upset by Bulldogs in shootout Last year, a rash of injuries was not enough to keep the Abbotsford Heat down, and if Wednesday’s tilt with the Hamilton Bulldogs is any indication, that won’t happen again this season. With the injuries continuing to pile up, the Heat fought valiantly Wednesday in Hamilton, but came out on the wrong end of a 3-2 shootout loss. But at least this loss showed signs that the Heat are capable of going up against a premier team in the league with a depleted roster and putting up a fight. It was something the Heat became famous for after making it to the second round of the playoffs and losing over 350 man games due to injury in the process. Twice the Heat trailed to the stingy Bulldogs, and twice they were able to come back, eventually forcing overtime thanks to a late third period goal by Lance Bouma. It was the sixth of the season for the gritty rookie forward, and his second in three games. Hu g o Ca r p e n t i e r a l s o scored for the Heat in the third period, as they secured at least the single point in a pivotal North Division match-up. Abbotsford is now tied with the Toronto Marlies for second in the division behind Hamilton. Not only was it Carpentier’s first goal this season for Abbotsford since he was recalled last month from Utah of the ECHL, it was his first American Hockey League goal since Mar. 3, 2009. That was back when the Abbotsford Heat were actually the former Quad City Flames. But the third period effort was not enough, however, as the Bulldogs scored on two of their five shootout attempts, while the Heat scored just once. Former Vancouver Canuck back-up Curtis Sanford was great for the Bulldogs, stopping 37 of 39 shots for his eighth win of the season. Leland Irving stopped 32 of 34 shots, but will be credited with his first shootout loss this season. A
Vancouver-based groupbuying site was relaunched nationwide this week — the latest player in a shopping phenomenon that has taken the online world by storm. SwarmJam will be offering deals and discounts ranging from 50 to 90 per cent off shops, restaurants, activities and services. The site is owned by Postmedia Network Inc., which also owns the Abbotsford-Mission Times, The Province, The Vancouver Sun and major dailies and community papers across Canada. After partnering with Postmedia, sales manager for digital advertising Ian Cruickshank pre-
dicts the new site will offer bigger and better deals to subscribers and reach a larger segment of the population, thanks to Postmedia’s existing relationship with advertisers and its readership base. “We need a fresh start to economic and tax policy. Anyone heard of the HST?” de Jong mockingly asked the crowd, who booed their dissent. “There is going to be a vote, and I agree with the proposition that vote should happen sooner, rather than later,” de Jong said. “I also believe we should examine ways to conduct that vote that don’t involve the expenditure of $30 million.” De Jong finished off his first speech on the stump with a pledge. “If the membership of this party bestow the leadership upon me, I want you to know this: I won’t let you down,” de Jong said. The newest candidate vying to be B.C.’s next premier joins Education Minister George Abbott, rookie Vancouver-Langara MLA Moira Stilwell and Health Minister Kevin Falcon, who made his leadership bid announcement Tuesday morning. Liberal heavy hitter, Solicitor General Rich Cole, also announced Wednesday morning he would not seek the
party’s leadership, citing personal and family reasons, not financial ones. B.C. Liberal MLAs will be selecting a new leader in a party vote set for Feb. 26, following Premier Campbell’s surprise resignation Nov. 3. “I’ve known George for a long time, I’ve known Mike for a long time, but George seems to me at this time in our history, we need a broader outreach and George can provide that because he can appeal to every side of the political spectrum,” Abbotsford-Mission MLA Randy Hawes said. For his part van Dongen said the Liberals are not trusted by the public, and are disconnected from the people they are supposed to be representing, and a change in leadership and governing style is required. “Clearly, our government was no longer cutting it with the people,” van Dongen said, explaining that he chose Abbott because he’s inclusive and a good listener – a style vastly different than the leadership Gordon Campbell provided.

CUMMINS, Rosamond (Rossi) Elizabeth nee Fulljames Born in Vancouver, February 1, 1923 to Pheobe and Bert Fulljames, Rossi passed away peacefully in Langley on November 29, 2010 at the age of 87. Predeceased by her loving husband John Thomas Cummins in 1985 and by her brothers Bert, Jack and Alan Fulljames. Survived by her four children, John (Carolyn), Rossi, Bert (Lana) and Ken (Marleen), four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters Phoebe (John), Beverley (Frank) and her brother Sydney Fulljames as well as several nieces, nephews and many friends. Mom loved her family, garden, crafts, reading and entertaining. She was always happiest when cooking, canning, baking and providing for her extended family. She will be sadly missed and forever remembered. Flowers are gratefully declined. If you wish, please make a donation to the Heart and Stroke Society. CHOMLACK, Evelyn Evelyn Chomlack, 67, died November 28, 2010, with her family by her side in Abbotsford, BC. Evelyn will be lovingly remembered by her children, Brett (April) and Chad (Stacy). Evelyn will also be fondly remembered by her five grandchildren; Travis, Jadyn, Cassidy, Caleb, and Marissa. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband Tom. A long time resident of Abbotsford, Evelyn loved cooking dinners for her family, buying special treats for her grandchildren, walking through Mill Lake and painting flowers for friends and family.

CROZIER, Lillian Dorothy Sheila
Lillian passed away calmly and peacefully at Saanich Peninsula hospital in the early hours of Oct. 24 after a “diminishing reality” fight with Alzheimer’s disease – a fight nobody can ever hope to win. The family wishes to thank the staff of Saanich Peninsula hospital for their loving and compassionate care. We know the difference between people who are kind because they are kind, and the people who are kind because they are being paid to be kind. The people of Saan Penn are one very special group. Predeceased by her beloved husband of over 50 years, Tom (Sr.), her first born and dear son, Tom (Jr.), her sisters Gladys & Violet and her brother, David. She leaves behind her daughter Wendy (Pat) and daughter by marriage Janet, who was so much more to Mom than a daughter in law. Her granddaughters Lindsey (Rob) Comeau, Lesley (Curtis) Genest and their families, grandsons Jarrett and Wes (sons to Pat), who came later into Mom’s life and her adored great grandchildren, Gilbert, Monique, Luc, Celine, Kaiya and Mattea. Also many much loved extended family. Lillian was a member of the Old Age Pension Association and was an active volunteer for over 30 years. One of her prized possessions was her certificate of recognition, presented to her for her many years of service to the organization and community. A kind and gentle soul, Lillian was nevertheless ferociously loyal to her family and her home. She will be remembered for her kindness, also her wit. She was often able to see the humour of an otherwise dull moment. Mom moved with her family as a young girl to Haida Gwaii (Queen Charlotte Islands) where life was simple and sometimes difficult financially. There was always time for fun and Mom would often travel with her sisters to dances in neighbouring communities. She loved to dance and played a small accordion, in those days people made music as they were able. It was here that she met Tom, the love of her life. They settled in Sandspit and raised their family with Mom’s siblings and parents as their neighbours. Mom moved to the Fraser Valley later in life and spent the last 35 years in Abbotsford where she developed many cherished friendships. Even as Mom’s memory became worse and her disease progressed, she still loved the ocean and was able to walk on the beach picking shells in the last weeks of her life. The family wishes to thank in particular Michael Burdett, Mom’s cousin whose kindness and devotion allowed her to remain in her home much longer than would otherwise have been possible. Michael visited daily to assist Mom and we are grateful for his support. We also wish to acknowledge with gratitude Henry and Mary LLoynd, Mom’s neighbours for many years, we thank you for your support and kindness to Mom. I’m sure that some readers have a favourite cause or charity, and if so a donation to whichever one you choose is a fitting tribute to Mom’s lifelong efforts to make this world a little bit better. Christmas Carol kicks off Thursday, Dec. 9
The 38-member cast is rich in seasoned performers, including Charles Wiebe as the Spirit of Christmas Present, Pauline Harskamp, Spirit of Christmas Past, Art Last as the late Jacob Marley and John Dawson as Bob Cratchit. Local young actors including Summer Joiner as Tiny Tim were enthusiastic in their roles, making this a true family production. In this version of the play, carolers are present throughout the story. “And of course, being Fraser Valley Stage, known for their wonderful musical theatre productions, it was just kind of a no brainer to have carolers on the stage and have them as an integral part of the story,” said Toronchuk.
“This music touches the soul like almost nothing else can.” Adrienne Joiner directs the 12-member chorus and Chad Joiner, MEI’s musical director, guests as the fiddler. “It’s a story that we can all relate to, when we think things will bring us happiness and joy, when in reality, it is relationships that are the most important,” said Toronchuk. Scrooge takes the audience along on a tremendous emotional journey during the course of the play; seeing how he lived in the past, then deciding that he is not going to live the rest of his life that way. “It’s a story of redemption,” added Toronchuk. “I am very proud of the work each actor and support per-
