bbotsford churches have reached out to the Tamil refugees with generous donations of clothes and toys for the women and children who arrived in Canada last week aboard a cargo ship from Sri Lanka. Les Talvio of Cyrus Centre in Abbotsford sent out a request on Tuesday after getting a call from a friend, who asked if there was a way he could help to get clothes for the women and children and some toys. “I sent out an e-mail [to some local churches] and was absolutely overwhelmed by the response,” said Talvio, the director of the youth shelter. Cyrus Centre was the drop-off site for goods gathered by several local churches. He expected to receive enough to fill up the back seat of his car. “The notice went out yesterday, and [Wednesday] we have two van loads of stuff, including new clothes and used clothes, baby stuff, baby clothes, diapers. I was just blown away.” “The community continues to amaze me with its generosity. It is truly a city that cares,” he added. A group of 492 Tamil refugees arrived in Victoria on Aug. 13 aboard a small cargo ship, the MV Sun Sea, after being at sea for about three months.

wo Mission RCMP officers who responded to a report of gunshots in 2008, an incident that led to the death of Lisa Dudley four days later, left to respond to another call involving a firearm, Inspector Pat Walsh told the Times Wednesday. The situation surrounding Dudley’s death and the death of her boyfriend Guthrie McKay is questioned again following a Vancouver Sun story outlining procedures into 911 calls concerning shots fired in the Abbotsford-Mission region.

Bridge crash kills trucker

Chilliwack man is dead after his transport truck crashed off the Vedder Canal bridge early Tuesday morning and into the water below. The accident happened around 2 a.m. and shut down westbound highway traffic for hours Tuesday as police and RCMP collision recreation members investigated the crash. The driver, a 50-year-old man from Chilliwack, was pulled from the cab by divers. A cause of death has not yet been released. While police say they won’t know for months why the truck crashed, the incident has sparked debate about a bridge that has seen its share of accidents. bridge deck was wet, but not frozen, and police believed fatigue may have been a factor. And in December of 2008, another truck crashed through a guard rail and into the canal. The driver wasn’t hurt in the crash, which took place in the afternoon. In that incident, a westbound truck caught the shoulder of the bridge, lost control

ELIGIBILITY FOR BUSING:

Bus service will be provided only to students who have registered and received a 2010/11 school bus pass prior to the ﬁrst day of school and who live outside the school district’s walk limits. Students CANNOT board the bus on the ﬁrst day by submitting a completed registration form to the driver. Walk limits are 4km for Kindergarten to Grade 7 students and 4.8km for Grades 8 to 12 students.

n Abbotsford Catholic school teacher is scheduled to be in Abbotsford Provincial Court on Monday in relation to an shoplifting incident in April. Abbotsford police arrested Martin Careen, a 50-year-old teacher at St. John Brebeuf Regional Secondary School, outside his home on suspicion of shoplifting items from a grocery store on Gladwin Road on April 26. Charges from this incident include theft under $5,000, willfully resisting or obstructing a peace officer and assault with a weapon. “Part of the obstructing a peace officer [charge] relates to the fact that when he was arrested, he consumed some of the evidence,” explained Abbotsford Police Const. Ian MacDonald. He added police originally recommended the charge of assault after Careen allegedly got in an altercation with the loss prevention officer. MacDonald could not com-

ment on the charge of assault with a weapon. However, he said Careen got into his vehicle and bumped one of the loss prevention officers as he tried to get away. Careen has been on paid leave for more than a year after he was charged in July 2009 with inviting a young person to sexual touching and communicating via a computer to lure a child. That matter was in B.C. Supreme Court in Chilliwack earlier this week for a pretrial conference. No physical contact between Careen and the 15year-old student was made, said MacDonald. Careen is one of three Abbotsford high school teachers arrested for sexrelated incidents involving students in the past year. On Aug. 12, Brian William Davis, 22, was taken into custody for allegedly having a sexual encounter with a 15year-old female student. Corey Hamade, 28, was arrested in June for sexual touching and luring a child.

cBarge has friends. In fact, it has at least 350 friends on Facebook, and counting. The former McDonald’s Friendship 500 was a floating restaurant built for Expo 86, as part of the fair’s tribute to future technology and architecture. Nicknamed McBarge, it became a popular icon of the exposition while it was anchored in Vancouver’s False Creek for the six-month event. Now, 26-year-old Adam Lewis, who was just two during Expo, created the Save the McBarge Facebook site to try to keep the dream alive. It began when Lewis came across the dirty relic while on an aimless drive along Indian Arm in north Burnaby with friends. Lewis is passionate about the kind of futuristic architecture that was promoted by Expo 86, and when he saw the old Friendship 500, he was smitten. “I saw it and I knew what it was. I began to look into its history,” he said. A year ago, he began to compile the details and

photos on the Facebook site. When asked why do it, he said “Why not?” “There’s all the history behind it and it’s just such a cool barge. People have tried and tried to make it into something, and finally we’ve got a plan that makes sense,” he said. Since its Expo 86 heyday, the barge was towed to a site near an oil refinery in Burnaby and was forgotten for more than 20 years. Developer Howard Meakin and his wife Kathy bought it about a decade ago. They hope to give the vessel a new life by anchoring it at Mission’s waterfront and turning it into a destination restaurant complex called Sturgeon’s on the River, with a marina and seaplane terminal. Lewis is thrilled with their plan. ‘Dedicated to the preservation of the McBarge,’ the Save the McBarge Facebook site is loaded with photos and details on the vessel’s history. Among those who wrote in are Claire from England, who recalls her visit to Expo 86 and who now has a “soft spot” for the barge, and Mark, who vividly remembers eating

One recent report says there are 44 children from the ship being detained at the Burnaby Youth Detention Centre. The children are staying with their mothers, 25 women, as the women await detention hearings and reviews. Talvio made one delivery of the donated goods on Wednesday, and will make another this week, but he is not taking any more donations. He expects some items will be taken to the youngsters soon, but items for the women may not be delivered until they are released. He can’t judge whether the Tamils are here legally or not, but “if there is a way I can help people in need, I’ll do what I can,” he said. “I can’t imagine what it would’ve been like that length of time on bouncy seas. Gov’t gets it right with census

p until a few weeks ago I assumed I was enjoying a typical Canadian summer. Lots of barbecuing, camping by the water, and catching up on some leisure reading. But I understand now that I’m completely out of the loop. Apparently I’m supposed to be jumping up and down and waving my arms in hysteria and panic . . . because the government is making some changes to the census. Oh the horror! Yup, making the long form questionnaire voluntary instead of mandatory is a constitutional crisis of epic proportions. It’s the final piece in Stephen Harper’s scary, hidden agenda. According to statisticians, lawyers, bureaucrats, academics and a host of other pointy heads, a voluntary questionnaire is unreliable and totally useless. We will be utterly clueless and have no hard data with which to plan policy, infrastructure, resource allocation or anything else. It’s surely the end of civilization. It’s interesting that every single Fortune 500 company uses voluntary questionnaires, surveys and interviews as the central methodology in their market research. Clearly the data they work with is completely unreliable and useless. Surveys, questionnaires and interviews, all voluntary by the way, are also the dominant data collecting tools in psychology, sociology and several other aca-

Obviously we should burn every thesis, dissertation, research report, textbook and scholarly publication that utilized a voluntary survey because these automatically render the information collected unreliable and useless. Every polling company and market research consultant should close their doors in shame because they’re nothing but a bunch of fraudulent tricksters who charge big bucks for unreliable and useless information collected by way of voluntary questionnaires and telephone interviews. I say, “lock ‘em up.” Speaking of “locking ‘em up” – this is at the very heart of the government’s decision to move to a voluntary questionnaire. As it stands, refusing to divulge personal information is a criminal offence punishable by incarceration. But according to the groups and organizations whose collective bowels are in an uproar over plans to scrap the mandatory questionnaire, we should keep the law as it is because it’s never enforced anyway. Hmmm, I wonder how a simi-

lar argument would have gone over when the government of the day was preparing to decriminalize homosexuality. After all, no one was going to jail for being in a same sex relationship. Whether a bad and unjust law is being enforced or not is irrelevant. But apparently foes of the government’s announced plans on the census, including all three opposition parties, the Canadian Bar Association and the Canadian Association of University Teachers, are adamant we maintain the status quo. “Ironic” isn’t quite the word I’m looking for. But there must be a word that aptly sums up a scenario where opposition politicians, lawyers and academics are insisting it is appropriate that the threat of jail be used to coerce citizens into filling out a questionnaire that demands personal and private information. Yet at the same time, these are the most vocal opponents of proposed legislation that would incarcerate repeat, violent offenders. Still, I’m not about to let this fuss over nothing distract me from my summer. he Komagata Maru incident of 1914, in which 387 Indian immigrants aboard a Japanese steamship were turned away from Vancouver and forced to return to India based on racist immigration law, is a blemish on Canadian history. In 2008 Prime Minister Stephen Harper stood up at the Gadhri Babian Da Mela festival in Surrey and apologized for the incident. But, apologies aside, how much have our attitudes towards migrants really changed? When a ship carrying hundreds of Tamil refugees from Sri Lanka hove into view of Canadian waters this week, Ottawa was quick to paint those aboard with a broad brush. Before a single Canadian had actually climbed aboard the Sun Sea, Public Safety Minister Vic Toews called the passengers “suspected human smugglers and terrorists.” No one on board has yet been linked to any war crime during Sri Lanka’s long and terrible civil war; simply being Tamil doesn’t make someone a Tamil Tiger. What’s more, Tamil groups in Canada contend that at least some of the passengers have legitimate refugee claims. Let us not forget that when the Komagata Maru returned to India, 19 of the passengers were shot by police and killed. If Tamil refugees are returned to Sri Lanka, it’s possible they will also face retribution from the government in Colombo, especially now that they have been branded as terrorists. The Conservative government would be wise to remember their own apology for the Komagata Maru incident. These Tamil migrants deserve a fair hearing, and rushing to judge them doesn’t help to protect Canadian shores. While we don’t agree with opening our doors to whomever has the means to float through our porous waterfront borders, let’s not lay the groundwork for tomorrow’s apology. ■ To comment on this editorial, e-mail us at letters@abbotsfordtimes.com.

Fed-up reader writes a letter to treasure Editor, the Times:

Abbotsford school board, we read (Big payout for S.D. axe man, Times, Aug. 13), recently gave its departing secretary-treasurer a gift of $105,574 of taxpayers money after only 10 months on the job. That’s disturbing! There seem to be only two possible, although not logical, reasons for this largesse. First, if Mark Lee was dismissed because of unsatisfactory performance or behaviour, surely no bonus was warranted. Second, if he left of his own accord, presumably to accept some more appealing opportunity, then it is also not logical to hand over such a reward. Please, worthy elected servants, don’t invoke the excuse that “the contract made us do it”. You wrote and approved the contract. Also, please don’t say that you had to hand over this bounty “because other school districts do the same thing!” I don’t actually believe any such assertion but if it is true, then I ask, “Has official fiscal responsibility become that endemic?” Are all B.C. school boards culpable? vide an explanation or details “because of the nondisclosure agreement.” You also negotiated that useful cover-up of such wasteful handing over of cash. I have heard the argument that such lavish gifting of other people’s money is needed to get good people. That’s not convincing. Also, this policy obviously did not produce impressive hiring last time. I happen to believe that this delightful city and this fine school district can attract fully competent top officials without such hidden bounty. I urge, even dare, you to try it. The current practise is both costly and ominous. In my mind’s eye I can see it now. Word gets around that in Abbotsford you can apply for the top school board job, work for 10 months, and leave with $217,696, which is close to what Canada’s prime minister makes in 10 months. It boggles the mind.

I said “work 10 months” but that’s not quite accurate. The first few months one learns the job. Then one works about six months and quietly moves on to apply the acquired skills elsewhere, a learning experience for which the Abbotsford taxpayers paid an enormous tuition fee. Please, dear trustees, don’t do this to us again. If you are again tempted to write such a contract and such a non-disclosure agreement, take a deep breath, take a long walk, drink three cups of very strong Turkish coffee, and reread this letter. I sit quietly in my house on a hazy Wednesday and I hear the sound of the mighty jets arriving at the Abbotsford airport. The Abbotsford International Airshow is about to take off and I look up at the powerful jets soaring above at incredible speed and with magical maneuvers that defies the laws of logic and gravity. I marvel at the technology and the talent of the pilots who sit in the cockpit. I start to think of why

these airplanes costing up to $113 million were built to fly at airshows. So, I thought I would do some research. First, I discovered that at least 20 pilots have died with the USAF Thunderbirds at airshows since 1954. Further more, I discovered that in Iraq 100,971 civilians have died since the war began. There are five million orphans, approximately one half of all children. Seventy per cent of all children in Iraq are suffering from trauma related symptoms. In Afghanistan, 151 Canadian soldiers are dead and 8,813 civilians have died. I am a Canadian who has the utmost respect for our military. see LETTERS, page A13

In 1981, Range Rover became a hit in the fashion world after a luxury prototype appeared in Vogue magazine. Introduced to America in 1987, it quickly became the ﬂagship model for Land Rover North America. In the early 1990s, a two-door, limited edition ‘Range Rover CSK’ was launched. Powered by a 3.9 litre, V8 engine paired with a ﬁve speed manual transmission (automatic transmission was optional) and new anti-roll suspension, only 200 units of the CSK were built, each individually numbered. The initials honoured the engineer who led the team that created the original Range Rover, Charles Spencer King.

In 1999, the Global Automotive Elections Foundation picked the Range Rover as one of the top cars of the century and Mr. King as one of the best engineers. And since then, the Range Rover has been celebrated in the lyrics of dozens of rap songs and in the movies including The Queen, the 2006 dramatization of the events following Diana, the Princess of Wales’ death in a car crash in Paris, and Quantum of Solace, the 2008 James Bond action ﬂick. Mr. King, who preferred around-towning in a Mini Cooper S, expressed regret about the

youthful apprenticeship, starting in 1942, at 17 years of age developing gas turbine engines for Rolls-Royce, through his maturation in the engineering department of the Rover Company—then led by his uncles Maurice and Spencer Wilks—through to his chairmanship of BL Technology from which he retired in 1985, he was, as one tribute described him, “the engineer's engineer. Whatever his cars were designed to do, they always exceeded the goals set for them.”

Post retirement, Mr. King remained passionate about the industry campaigning for lighter weight cars and for design improvements for better visibility. He called for thinner windscreen pillars or A-pillars, too-thick ones increasingly identified as a crash factor. On June 26, 2010 Mr. King, aged 85, died in Coventry, England from injuries he sustained when he was hit by a van while cycling to do his daily errands. Embrace the miracles of life I am a senior citizen. One of the sad/glad experiences of old age is the frequency of the passing of Christian friends and loved ones. I can say sad/glad because though goodbyes are sad, “we sorrow not as those who have no hope”. We shall see our believing friends and loved ones again. Such times bring us up short to consider what life is all about. Really, from beginning to end, life is a series of miracles. When I talk about a miracle I mean an event that could only come about by the intervention of God, something beyond our human power to make happen. I counted at least five miracles that take place in the life of every Christian. They are the miracles of being born into this world, of being born into the family of God, of spiritual growth, of going to heaven and of being resurrected from the dead.

When you think of it, is there anything more miraculous than the birth of a baby? Is there anything more beautiful? Well, I guess there is, because there had to be first the creation of Adam and Eve from whom we are all descended. But God didn’t stop there. He made a man and a woman and invested in them the power to become co-creators with him and said “Be fruitful and multiply inherit the earth.” We were given the awesome privilege of bringing new souls into being. We bring them forth but it is God who gives the miracle of life. And along with that we are given the responsibility of nurturing and fashioning the next generation. Then there is the miracle of being born into the kingdom of God. Because Adam and Eve sinned, we inherited their sinful nature and became estranged from God. Yes, even as lovely,

cuddly, winsome little babies we were nevertheless sinners and naturally rebellious. But God had mercy on us and sent his son to save us. “For God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” And, “to as many as received him to them gave he the power to become the sons of God, even to those who believe in his name”. This is the miracle of the new birth when God forgives our sins and his spirit takes up residence in our hearts. Now, as a result of the spirit’s indwelling there comes the miracle of the transformed life. “If anyone is in Christ he is a new creation, old things have passed away and behold everything has become new.” And we can’t keep quiet about it. We have to tell everybody! There is an old chorus: “Things

are different now, something happened to me when I gave my heart to Jesus”. The rest of our life on earth is then meant to be lived for the saviour who died for us and rose again. But the miracles are not over. When our life on earth is done we experience the miracle of entering into heaven. “To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.” “For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands eternal in the heavens.” And as Jesus said, “In my house are many mansions. I go to prepare a place for you.” Wait though, the last and best miracle is yet to come. At the end of the age Jesus is coming to earth again. “Behold he comes with clouds and every eye shall see Him.” He will bring with him

Faith that matters the spirits of all those who have died in the faith to be reunited with their bodies resurrected from the grave and along with the then living believers we will all be caught up to meet the Lord in the air. So shall we be ever with the Lord in a new heavens and a new earth. Dear reader, have you made your peace with God? He has done all he could do. In his love he sent his son to die for you. Do husbands want weak women? F

or the first 16 years of my marriage I would define myself according to the likeability or acceptance of my husband. One day I read Genesis 3:16 where it talks about the curse and it says, “Your desire will be for your husband.” That word desire means “a violent craving” for something. Then I realized that I had allowed myself to be so psychologically dependant on my husband that he had become an idol in my life. I had put my husband’s acceptance of me over my identity as a daughter of God. I now realized that it takes a strong woman to make a strong marriage. I had to stop this idea that I was a weak fragile individual who was needy and incapable of standing on my own two feet. My security was in my husband’s ability to earn a living and his commitment to stay mar-

in God alone. I realized that my marriage was an opportunity for me to build character and stop being an immature baby. Men do not want a weak woman who’s always complaining about every little thing. Husbands want to brag about their wives. They want to take pride in their wives’ strength and accomplishments. Statistics show that most women will die as widows. Women live longer than men. Since most women marry men as old as or older than they are, you do the math. Sooner or later, you’re probably going to have to live without your husband. So why not develop the strength, courage and character you need now, while your husband is still living? My marriage relationship was a direct result of what I had put into it. As Christians, we need to be active and confront the weak-

I believed I could not exist without my husband. I had turned my marriage into idol worship. I realized that I had given to a man what rightfully belonged to God. How could I ever find the courage to confront someone whose acceptance of me determined my sense of wellbeing? I needed to build a stronger relationship with God and find my refuge, security, comfort, strength and hope

fun way to celebrate the PNE’s 100th.” Shantz’ roller coaster of a day was to begin bright and early today at 6 a.m., before Playland officially opens. The ride itself lasts 90 seconds, and with the unloading and loading, each ride should take about two minutes. However, by our calculations, the PNE folks will give Shantz a few extra minutes here and there for, um, accidents. He’ll be joined by a few lucky listeners for a few rides. If Shantz completes the 100 rides, he’ll make history. “The PNE folks said they have no records for this. Once this is finished, I’ll likely have the record for the most consecutive rides (at Playland),” said Shantz, who also went through BCIT’s broadcaster program. How is he preparing? “I’ll eat a lot of mini-donuts,” he kidded. “Really, I plan to get a good night’s sleep. Really, I’m going to hope for the best.”

Allowing Tamils sets the wrong example Editor, the Times:

I cannot believe that Canada is even considering allowing the Tamil immigrants to stay in our country. What kind of message is Canada sending the rest of the world when it rewards those who ignore the rules set by the law? I have a cousin who has been fighting Canada’s immigration for years, trying to get his wife to be allowed to live with him in our country. Clearly, this was wasted time as he would have more success getting her into Canada if she just jumped the borders. It makes me so livid to know that Canada’s immigrations laws are such a joke that they will give these criminals exactly what they want. How are Canadian citizens expected to show these immigrants welcoming and respect when they will not respect our country and its laws? Why is the government spending thousands of dollars to house and question these illegal refugees when they could spend that money to house and clean up the legal Canadian citizens living on our streets? No news value to police ‘N’ story Editor, the Times:

Re: ‘N’ decals popping up on police cars, Times, Aug. 17). What is journalistic about this story? Mr. Doerksen believes the police officer’s use of the ‘N’ decal to catch speeding drivers is entrapment. Entrapment? Nonsense. This tactic is a crime fighting tool used by Abbotsford police to combat crime in Canada’s murder capital. When the city of Surrey became the nation’s car theft capital police in that municipality introduced the bait car program. I’m disappointed in the Abbotsford Times for printing such rubbish under the guise of journalism. Furthermore, I also believe it was very irresponsible on the part of the paper to disclose the police officer’s gender and type of vehicle she drove. Lastly, I think the police officer should have ticketed Mr. Doerksen for obstruction of justice. I wonder if he would have approached a male police officer with the same arrogance? he weather outside might lend evidence to the contrary, but hockey season is quickly approaching. Proof of that could be found at the Centre Ice Sports Arena this week and the 21 kids who took part in the inaugural Abbotsford Heat Hockey School, which was presented by the reputable Okanagan Hockey School, based out of Penticton, B.C. “It’s good to be on the ice, sure beats working in the office,” said Blake Wesley, senior director of hockey operations for the Okanagan Hockey School and Okanagan Hockey Academy. The camp, which began bright and early Monday morning and ends today, helped kids aged seven to 12 develop their individual hockey skills and introduces “fundamental” team concepts as well. “One of the things we never get away from are fundamental individual skill development techniques and that’s why the kids are here,” said Wesley. Although some of the older kids at the camp were strong enough to rip a slap shot to the top corner, Wesley said the most important skill instructors could help kids improve on was skating. “We start every day with skating and then the progression techniques are skating, puck handling, puck control, passing, shooting and then tactics,” he said. “They’re not going to master every-

The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades defeated the Idaho State University Bengals 71-69, to win their second straight exhibition game against an NCAA Division One opponent at the Envision Athletic Centre on Tuesday. The Cascades came out strong and opened with a quick four-point lead, before the Bengals recovered to go on an eight-point run to close out the first quarter with a 20-15 advantage. UFV chipped away at the Bengal lead in the second quarter and was able to tie the game with less than a minute remaining in the first half. Two quick shots by Idaho State sent the visiting team into the intermission with a 36-33 advantage. In the second half the Cascades started to make their move as they played tremendous defence, holding Idaho State to 12 third quarter points and in the fourth frame the Cascades’ speed

For the former W.J. Mouat Hawk gridiron sensation, it appears that time is now. A handful of media outlets covering the U of Oregon Ducks have singled out the 6’3” 223 pound redshirt freshman for his standout performances throughout training camp, which began on Aug. 9. After not dressing for a single game and being assigned the tedious task of scout team linebacker at practice last season, Lokombo might not only be called upon this year to dress, but start for the Ducks when they kick off the 2010-2011 PAC-10 season on Sept. 4 against New Mexico. “The first four or five days of camp, he picked off a ball every day,” Ducks linebacker coach Don Pellum told The Oregonian of Lokombo.
