Burning to breathe
GROUNDBREAKING HUGE HOME FOR HIGHSTREET
Forest fire smoke forcing some Valley residents indoors
RAFE ARNOTT RArnott@abbotsfordtimes.com
A
Metro Vancouver warning for people with respiratory problems or health conditions to avoid exercising outdoors this week has been extended through the weekend. “It’s PM 2.5, fine particulate matter, basically soot, that is being pushed into the region from forest fires that are burning around the province,” said spokesperson Bill Morrell. By Thursday afternoon, a continuation of those conditions prompted air quality warnings to be expanded through Saturday morning. Morrell said because the smoke is coming from the opposite direction — east to west, and north from the Whistler area — the usual “funnel” effect of Vancouver air pollution impacting the valley does not apply this time. “It’s coming from the Interior, the other direction, “ Morrell said. The soot was detected throughout the week at monitoring stations across the region, particularly the eastern portion of the Lower Fraser Valley, including Abbotsford, Chilliwack and Hope. Morrell said experts are constantly monitoring air quality data and would be revising warnings every 24 hours. In the meantime, people need to be aware of the possible impact on their health, and take precautions. “Clearly, if people have respiratory illnesses or concerns they should limit their exposure and basically stay inside . . . or certainly limit their exposure when they are outside,” he said, adding, “To the extent possible, avoid breathing it.” ◗ Anyone experiencing symptoms such as chest discomfort, shortness of breath, coughing or wheezing should contact their doctor. Shape Properties president John Horton, left, and Abbotsford Mayor George Peary dig in for the ceremonial groundbreaking at the Highstreet retail development site Thursday afternoon. The property will house a 600,000-square-foot shopping centre (the largest built in B.C. over the past 30 years), and will include a Walmart Super Centre and London Drugs as anchor tenants at the northeast corner of Highway 1 and Mount Lehman Road. The massive complex is scheduled to be completed in late 2012.

JEAN KONDA-WITTE JKonda-Witte@abbotsfordtimes.com fter four years on dialysis and a kidney transplant last March, Abbotsford’s Dave Wilson thought his health problems were behind him. But he soon found out there is no free ride when it comes to organ transplant. “Transplant is not a cure, it’s another treatment,” said his wife of 49 years, Lois. Transplants, like dialysis, have their downside, she added. “You don’t just get a kidney and live happily ever after. You have to take care of that kidney really well, and it’s hard when the immune system is compromised.” Dave’s kidneys began failing him in 1987, and he later discovered he had inherited polycystic kidney disease. Lois was proactive in finding a matching donor on the Internet (as reported in the Times, March 12, 2010). Wilson had the transplant on March 24 at Vancouver General Hospital, but soon after complications arose when doctors discovered a hernia on the incision, and had to operate again. The anti-rejection drugs following the transplant had side

It just quits.” The annual kidney walk at Gardner Park (on Livingstone Avenue in Abbotsford) has a 2.5km distance and a 5km fun run. Registration on Sunday is at 10 a.m. and the walk goes at 11 a.m. There will also be a silent auction and entertainment.
CF-18s pull out of Airshow
Join experts for meteor shower
The recent crash of a Demo Hornet Jet at an airshow in Lethbridge, Alta., last month has prompted the Canadian Forces CF-18 jet team to pull out of this year’s Abbotsford International Airshow. The crash happened on July 23 during a practice session. Capt. Brian Bews was able to eject himself from the cockpit seconds before the plane slammed into the ground and exploded into flames. Despite the cancellation, Abbotsford International Airshow president and CEO Ron Price said enthusiasts shouldn’t worry. The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, Canadian Air Force Snowbirds, and Skyhawks will be there, as well as a demo by the C-17 Globemaster and the F-15 Strike Eagle. This year’s show runs Aug. 13 to 15.
Watch the falling stars on Aug. 11 when the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada sets up telescopes at Aldergrove Lake Park for the public to watch the annual Perseids meteor shower. They’ll be there all night, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. To take part in this open-air event, participants must arrive before 11 p.m. but can leave at any time. This annual celestial event is expected to peak in the early hours between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m., when it may be possible to see up to 50 meteors per hour. All ages are invited at a cost of $2 per person. Aldergrove Lake Regional Park is at the corner of Lefeuvre Road and Huntingdon Road (or 8th Avenue) in Abbotsford. Until midnight, interpreters will lead guided constellation walks and tell tales of the mythic Greek hero Perseus as the stars shoots overhead. See events at www.metrovancouver.org.

bbotsford police are investigating the puzzling disappearance of a man family described as a mild-mannered lab technician. Friends, family members and work associates have not seen Harold Demorest, 45, since July 26. The local man’s family is baffled at his disappearance, which his sister Louise described as “completely out of character.” She said alarm bells started going off in her head when her brother’s work supervisor contacted her Tuesday, inquiring about Harold’s whereabouts, as he had missed several shifts. Louise was in Abbotsford putting up missing person posters Wednesday, hoping someone might have seen either Harold or his car. “It’s a total mystery,” she said. “He’s vanished. HAROLD DEMOREST His rent wasn’t paid for this month, he didn’t show up for work in the last week . . . it’s a nightmare, we have no idea where he could have gone or where to start looking.” Demorest drives a green, 1997 Toyota Rav 4, license plate number 221 GBH, which is also missing. Louise described her brother as a bit of a loner, who kept to himself, but enjoyed basketball, mountain biking and going for hikes. She hopes once police or a member of the public discovers his car, Harold will be close by. Demorest’s Abbotsford basement suite shows all the signs of someone who was expecting to be back shortly, not gone on a trip of some kind, his sister said. “We assume maybe his car went off the road somewhere, maybe he went for a walk and he’s injured and not able to move,” she said. APD Const. Ian MacDonald said it was too early in the investigation for police to comment on the possibility of foul play, adding early indictors point towards the possibility that Demorest drove somewhere for a hike, and locating his Rav 4 would be key. ◗ Demorest is 6’2” tall and weighs 200 pounds. Anyone with infor mation about Demorest is asked to contact the Abbotsford Police at 604-859-5225.

Family minivan crashes on way to Abbotsford, leaving boy orphaned

ashar Arshad was riding with friends in a two-vehicle convoy heading to Abbotsford Sunday when his family’s minivan crossed the centreline and hit a motorhome. The collision killed his parents, Arshad and Shakila Mahmood; his sisters, Daraksha, 15, and Mahlaka, 13, his grandfather Muhammad Shraif, 81, and friend Syeda Alizay Asad, 14. Aashar, 11, had originally been riding with his family, but had switched vehicles with Syeda shortly before the accident so she could chat with his two sisters. Aashar is staying with long-
time family friends until it can determined whether he will stay in Canada or return to Pakistan, from where his family moved four years ago. “I might stay here or I might go back to Pakistan,” Aashar told The Edmonton Journal. “I don’t really care where I go because I have friends here and I have good friends there, too. I’m happy with my family’s decision.” Aashar said he enjoys living in Canada, adding that his father had spent five years arranging to move here. He said he doesn’t know if his parents would have wanted him to stay or return to
Pakistan, but his father wanted him to eventually pursue engineering at a Canadian school — a career choice to which young Aashar has already given some thought. Aashar said he will miss his parents and sisters, whom he said were always polite and nice to him and anyone else they encountered. When Sunday’s crash happened, Aashar said he understood how severe it was, but hoped that everything would be OK. “It was sad. It was unbearable — unexplainable.” - EDMONTON JOURNAL/POSTMEDIA NETWORK

‘Hit’ prank scrambles police A
prank call led a frightened 17year-old Abbotsford youth to call police and report his friend was the victim of a targeted homicide early Tuesday morning. The claim turned out to be bogus, and the teen was found unharmed sitting at home, but not before 12 officers and nine patrol cars were dispatched to a remote area on a wild goose chase. Abbotsford police received a 911 call around 3:30 a.m. from a teen who said his 16-year-old friend called him in a panic because the car he was driving was blocked by two vehicles on a rural back road, APD Const. Ian MacDonald said. The caller described a harrowing situ-
ation over the phone and then two loud “gunshots” were heard, and the phone went dead, MacDonald said. “He sounds panicked . . . all of a sudden there’s two loud popping sounds in the background, the friend screams and the phone goes dead. “The friend [being called], of course, goes into ‘freak out mode’ and calls us, and we send nine patrol cars up Sumas Mountain to the area described by the caller at last contact,” he said. Police found nothing out of the ordinary after conducting a massive sweep of the area, and ended up locating the youth they believed to be in mortal distress sitting with a friend watching television on the couch at home. “They concocted this as a great sort of prank to play on their friend,” MacDonald said, adding police failed to see
the humour in the situation considering the number of gang, and drug-related murders on Abbotsford back roads recently. “I don’t think it’s very funny in light of current events, and I don’t think there is much of an [appetite] for this in our community,” he said. Police found Mandy Astin Johnson, 22, of Langley, shot to death along a stretch of rural blacktop near the corner of Polar Avenue and Townline Road, in northwest Abbotsford just after 3 a.m. on July 30. It was Abbotsford’s third homicide of the year. MacDonald said the prank was very ill conceived, and the youth who made the bogus call is lucky to not be facing a charge of public mischief after tying up valuable police resources.

Straight talk on the crime rate E van Erar, the American humorist, once referred to statistics as “the only science that enables different experts using the same figures to draw different conclusions.” Famed hockey coach Scotty Bowman was probably more to the point when he claimed, “statistics are for losers.” In any event, it must be a slow news cycle because statistics are dominating the media these days. Statisticians and the country’s journalists have blown a gasket about the government’s plans to modify the way data is collected in the long form census. On the upside, things must be going pretty nice if changes to the census are being talked about as a national crisis. Apparently the folks working at Statistics Canada are taking the news so hard that morale is in freefall. Hey guys, if things are so tough you can always walk away from your government-protected job for life, guaranteed pension, 17 bankable sick days a year and give it a go in the private sector. But the bigger controversy around statistics is the recently released so-called “crime rate” and what, if anything, it actually means. Once again, Abbotsford-Mission was given the dubious distinction of being Canada’s murder capital; a claim so ludicrous that it doesn’t even warrant discussion. Something that does require further analysis, however, is the conclusion from Statistics
JOHN MARTIN
Crime matters Canada that crime rates are in decline. According to the official numbers, there were 920 violent crimes per 100,000 people in 2009 compared to 936 in 2008. While this may be encouraging, it’s critical that we remember these numbers only refer to crimes reported to police. There are several indicators that fewer people, for a variety of reasons, are willing to report criminal victimization than in the past. Nonetheless, according to the federal Liberals, academics, and a host of other apologists for the criminal class, this is irrefutable evidence that crime is no longer a concern and the government’s plans to crack down on violent, repeat offenders should be immediately disposed of. OK, let’s all pretend that the reported meager decline from 2008 to 2009 is 100 per cent accurate. Even if that was the case, it still must be noted that violent crime is more than 300 per cent higher than it was in 1962 when we started collecting such statistics. Similarly, while the soft-on-crime brigade never miss an opportunity to note property crime has also been declining in recent years, they strategically fail to mention that
it’s still almost 60 per cent higher than was the situation in 1962. If we throw it all together we see that Canada’s official overall crime rate decreased from 6,615 offences per 100,000 population in 2008 to 6,406 in 2009. But that’s still more than twice the 1962 rate of 2,771 reported crimes. So why isn’t this all important fact being reported? Probably no single constituency is more negligent and reckless in this deliberate oversight than the country’s criminologists. It seems every journalist across the land has the same dozen criminology “experts” in their list of contacts they always turn to for insightful commentary each year when Statistics Canada releases the official crime rate numbers. Like clockwork, they rattle off the latest stats as absolute proof that the Conservative’s “get tough on crime” agenda is ill-advised and assure us there’s no crime problem whatsoever. Without exception, every criminologist quoted in the major media following the release of the latest numbers showing a three per cent decline in overall crime, avoided making a long term comparison to the situation in 1962. It would seem, for this crew, opposing a Conservative government is much, much more important than even a semblance of integrity. ■ John Martin is a criminologist at

The arguments over this could take up numerous editorials and articles, and no doubt will over the next few months. Will waste to energy dump too much soot and pollutants in the Fraser Valley airshed? Are some residents going to take the brunt while others get to breathe clean air? Can the system ever be made truly clean? However, the current system couldn’t continue. Burying garbage and hoping it goes away shows that as a society, we’re no better than a sixyear-old hiding brussels sprouts under the table to avoid eating them. As everyone from the Metro Vancouver directors to Premier Gordon Campbell have said, we need to stop creating so much garbage, period. Recycling, we’re getting pretty good at (although we could improve) but reducing is where we need to make great strides. This is where everyone from the average citizen to the federal and provincial governments are going to have to work collectively. We need to reduce packaging, bags, boxes, and foam peanuts. We need to stop tossing out millions of cardboard coffee cups, paper napkins and burger boxes. We need old solutions and new ones to slash the amount of junk we throw out after preparing a meal with supermarket ingredients. And what we can’t eliminate, we need to recycle in an expanded blue box system. Citizens are going to have to pull up their socks and take part, but governments will have to show some real backbone. They’ll probably have to put some serious money into this, and they’ll have to face down the many, many corporations who won’t want to change.

◗ Your view This week’s question: Considering the recent rash of hot summer weather, is the city’s watering ban too strict? a.] Yes. Brown lawns make our city look terrible. b.] No. We have to look at the big picture & protect our water. c.] Compromise is key. Allow watering 2-3 times weekly.

A blind eye to world’s oldest profession Editor, the Times:
The writer of a recently published letter (Shocking ads don’t belong in newspaper, Times, July 27) claimed to be shocked to see an ad for a massage parlour. A blatantly dishonest arrangement exists in Canada regarding law enforcement turning a blind eye to prostitution businesses. Criminal Code sections pertaining to living on the avails of prostitution of another person (s.212.1.j) and common bawdy houses (s.210) officially outlaw such enterprises, yet in practice they are almost entirely tolerated and often licensed in cities across the country under the euphemistic labels of “escort agencies” and “massage parlours”. When the same circumstances existed there, royal commissions in two Australian states found vice cops and licensing officials had been routinely paid off by the owners of the supposedly outlawed prostitution businesses. Much of Australia and New Zealand subsequently decriminalized the sex business, allowing the “massage parlours” to legally operate as brothels, rather than
keep the highly questionable extralegal arrangement maintained in Canada. But of course the most important thing in Canada is that we politely avoid acknowledging the situation, as any sincere discussion may lead to a nasty debate on the subject. We must therefore sternly admonish anything such as a newspaper ad that threatens our ability to continue pretending that the

Aircraft well-maintained, pilots were qualified PILOTS, from page A1 “[Monday] the helipad that was built for [investigators] the day before, caught on fire so they weren’t able to access the site.” Investigators will visit the site and record witness accounts to try and piece together what caused the crash. The age of the aircraft has also been brought into question, however, Yearwood said the plane, built in the 1950s, had received numerous structural updates over the years and had been inspected daily. “Every aircraft that’s flying today has to be maintained to a standard of it being brand new,” he said. “Nothing on the aircraft [was] aged. They’re inspected everyday and every component has an overhaul life. The fact that the data plate says it was made in the ’50s is probably the only thing that is not maintained.” Leigh Barratt, tactics officer for the Pro-
vincial Air Tanker Centre, said both pilots were “well trained.” “Conair, and ourselves, we have some very stiff qualifications on our requirements before they can even be considered,” said Barratt, referring to the caliber of pilots allowed in the air tanker program. ““I don’t know if [the public] really appreciate that there is a lot of training that goes into all the people involved in fire fighting whether you’re in the air or on the ground.” A complete analysis of the crash is expected within a year, added Yearwood. This is Conair’s first fatal crash in nearly 20 years, however the company has had close calls in the past. A pilot escaped with his life after an Air Tractor AT802F Amphibious “Fire Boss” aircraft he had been flying crashed into Okanagan Lake in 2009. B.C. Fire Information officer Gwen Eamer told the Times on Tuesday there have been 1,218 forest fires reported in the province since April 1, with 400 of them still active. - WITH FILES FROM POSTMEDIA NETWORK

THE ROAD RULES
In early June, Lauren Rosenberg of Los Angeles commenced a law suit against Google Maps for damages she sustained when she was hit by a car while walking along a Google Map recommended route in Park City, Utah. Her ‘Google-charted’ path included a stretch of highway without sidewalks that reportedly “had cars zipping [by] at unsafe speeds.”

Reports of the lawsuit apparently “prompted a pithy online discussion regarding the degree to which pedestrians are responsible for watching out for their own safety when it comes to walking along streets.”
(weather permitting)
In Vancouver in early June, the report, “We’re all Pedestrians”, was released by the Vancouver Area Network of Drug Users (VANDU). Prompted by a Simon Fraser University study in 2009 identifying the Downtown Eastside as the “most dangerous location for pedestrians” and funded by the City of Vancouver, the report recommended reducing the speed limit on Hastings Street between Abbott and Jackson streets from 50 kmh to 30 kmh. Supporters of the recommendation say the area needs to be treated like a school zone. The Vancouver police, while supporting “any measures that reduce the number of collisions” also responded, “it’s more about pedestrian behaviour. Speed is not so much the contributing factor down there.” TransLink also sounded unconvinced saying

Montreal and Toronto both launched “offensives” when their absolute numbers were still less than Vancouver’s. Spain has the worst statistics in Europe with 1.5 pedestrian deaths per 100,000, the Netherlands the best at .46. Half of the motor vehicle fatalities in New York City involve pedestrians compared to 12% nationally. Ms. Bula’s article covers the difficulties inherent in trying to understand and prevent pedestrian ‘accidents,’ the likely causes of Vancouver’s dreadful statistics, the solutions that haven’t worked and the solutions that look more promising, like countdown traffic lights. It also presents the nitty-gritty physics at work when the human body collides with a high-ended vehicle as compared with a car and the effect of the speed of the vehicle. While these details are not for the faint of heart everyone should know that if they are hit by a vehicle travelling faster than 50 kmh, the result statistically, will likely be fatal.”

A10 ❘ FAITH ❘ FRIDAY, AUGUST 6, 2010 THE TIMES
A longing for the manifest presence of God O
ur Lord Jesus Christ’s only plan for reaching this lost world with the good news of the gospel was to leave behind a spirit-empowered body of believers,; the church. That is the vital message of the Day of Pentecost. “But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you and you will be witnesses to Me . . . to the uttermost parts of the Earth.” (Acts 1:8) Jesus expects His church to be spiritually on fire and the world deserves the witness of such a church. “Be holy for I am holy.” (1 Pet. 1:16) Any lesser level of spiritual fervor presents to the watching world a blurred image of the God we serve and the saviour who loves and died for them. A church does not “hold” or “put on” a revival. Revival is not something we work up, but something God sends down in answer to our cries for spiritual deliverance and renewal. Revival is not just spiritual excitement or renewed Christian activities, or even a new vision for evangelism. Revival is the manifest presence of God in the midst of His people, resulting in their daily living out the great commandment:
there was no justice. He saw “You shall love the Lord your that there was no man and God with all your heart and wondered that there was no with all your soul and with intercessor.” (Isa.59: 16) all your strength and with all As a result God brought your mind, and your neighBERT WARDEN judgment upon His land and bour as yourself.” (Lu. 7:27) His people. they were banished from our schools? There is little hope of reformation in our culture without a renewal of faith in our homes and churches first. As Christians we must ask ourselves honestly, how much we have bought into this corrupt world system? Its affluence, its styles, its entertainment and even its moral laxness, and what that has to do with the apathy, prayerlessness and powerlessness of our spiritual lives? When will the trickle of believers who respond to the call to prayer turn into a mighty river – multitudes on our faces before God pleading for personal and church wide revival, the salvation of sinners and the arresting of the downward moral slide of our nation? “Sow for yourselves righteousness, reap in mercy. Break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the Lord until He comes and rains righteousness on you.” (Hosea 10:12) ■ Bert Warden, a retired C&MA pastor, is a

We are a smaller group of friends that have transplanted our gathering from Cloverdale to Abbotsford. We enjoy our praise and worship led by gifted, talented and inspiring worship leaders who lead us into wonderful expressions of adoration to God. We find help and inspiration and direction in teaching by those who share each week. We have a desire to help teach children to be all God created them to be in class ages to 12 years. We desire to make friends with all who are maturing in their relationship with God or if they are curious spiritually. We work diligently at making everyone feel welcome. Our hope is that the hurting, seeking, lonely and anyone for that matter; would find a place to mature and be able to contribute in some loving way to the community of Abbotsford. We have a no pressure attitude so that people can interact with others, hang around the fringes in curiosity, enter in with gusto, ask for prayer, worship in intimacy – simply come and go according to each one’s comfort zone and zeal. Our hope is that you would feel to blend in as a part of what is happening at Connect Church and share your own unique self to actively contribute in our movement to enrich our own gatherings and to self sacrifice in helping to introduce God’s love into broken lives around us. Connect Church is led by a Pastoral Team consisting of Blake & Adrienne Joiner and Sean & Jamie Sabourin. We meet in the gymnasium at the Secondary Campus of Abbotsford Christian School every Sunday morning at 10:00 am. There is a coffee time beginning a t 9:30 am and again following the service.

THE TIMES FRIDAY, AUGUST 6, 2010 ❘
Love is blind, marriage is an eye-opener
You can’t force love; or renovations
I
remember the “good old days” of dating. I felt like a queen; having doors opened for me, flowers given to me, and kind words being bestowed upon me. Then the big day came when the wedding bells rang and I was ready for eternal bliss. As the months and years unfolded, our relationship slipped into neglect. My concentration was now on children, menu plans, and keeping a clean house – which was extremely frustrating. I had no energy to work on the problems that had now exposed their ugly heads. What is love? I Corinthians 13:4-7, describes the attributes of love. “Love suffers long and is kind, love does not envy, love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave
ALLIANCE
rudely , does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil, does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hope all things, endures all things.” In a marriage, love is a commitment and a decision to esteem your spouse more highly than yourself. It involves giving him/her freedom and acceptance to be who they are. I remember times in our marriage when I tried to force my husband to be a handyman. He resented the fact that I did not accept that he was not a handyman, and that he had no desire to become one. It was a sobering day when I realized that I must accept who he is, just as I would expect him to accept me for who I am. Another thing I learned, the
ANGLICAN
ALICE MARYNIUK
Above and beyond hard way, was to not ignore problem areas. Every problem can be handled one of two ways: change what can be changed, and accept what must be accepted. This process involves admitting how you feel and coming to grips with areas of dysfunction. If you try, like I did, to keep all your feelings bottled up inside, one day the volcano will explode. Keeping a journal was a great way for me to find a safe place to communicate my frustrations. Sometimes talking to a friend or a counsellor helps, but make sure it is confidential.

These issues can involve a wide range of topics, but an example of them could include: self-esteem issues, assertiveness, living a purposeful life, self-acceptance, being responsible for self, dealing with addictions and establishing personal integrity. I cannot give to others what I do not possess myself. If I am full of self-hate, anger, bitterness and resentment, I am not capable of a healthy relationship. I must come to terms with areas within myself that I need to change first. Maintaining a strong relationship, and having a loving home environment is worth fighting for. Just remember that your spouse is not the enemy. Marriage is a very vital relationship and it helps us form stronger character. The time has come to open your eyes.

The motive is to discover solutions, not to have a pity party. Gain the information you need to make positive changes, and to mature as an adult. Read books, attend seminars, or attend marriage counselling. Maybe, you need to stop being so controlling or aggressive. Perhaps you are too passive and you need to participate more. There may be old habits that you need to break; like being codependent or enabling your partner and it’s time for some tough love and new boundaries to be established. This brings me to my next point. As an individual if I suffer from hurts of the past that I have not dealt with, it will greatly impact my marriage in negative ways. It takes courage to find a professional counsellor and start dealing with areas of one’s soul that are in need of healing.

Special workshop fit for King’s Music

– PHOTO SUBMITTED/FOR THE TIMES
Guitar-making legend Robert Godin will be holding a workshop and clinic at King’s Music in Abbotsford on Wednesday.
n the guitar-making world, Canadian Robert Godin is one of the instrument’s most acclaimed creators. Luckily for locals, he’s giving a clinic and workshop in Abbotsford on Wednesday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m. inside King’s Music. Godin will be showing some of his company’s latest offerings and will speak to guitar lovers on what they can look for in their search for their next guitar. He will also give a behind-the-scenes look at some of the secrets his company employs making products different from anything else on the market. Godin will be sharing his journey, when he began making guitars nearly 50 years ago in rural Quebec, and prog-
ress to become the largest Canadian manufacturer of acoustic and electric instruments, shipping nearly a quarter million guitars annually to 65 countries worldwide. He’ll relate how understanding the technology and use of various woods of the instrument will help players of all abilities create magic with his instruments. Godin employs such concepts as the use of air chambers to create resonance in solid body guitars, patented neck pocket designs and compound arched tops to strengthen acoustics without compromising tone. He will share the creation of the double ended truss rod, which allows players to adjust their guitars based on varying climates as well as many other innovative design features exclusive to

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections Aries March 21 - April 19: The main accent falls on romance, creative urges, speculative risks, charming children, beauty and pleasure. You’re on a winning streak, especially Sunday night to Tuesday, so enjoy, take advantage! Chase money, earnings, new clients and shopping bargains Tuesday eve, Wednesday. (But take care Thursday: don’t buy technology.) Relationships face some upheaval, disagreement Monday (when a deep rift is possible) and Thursday, but exciting agreement, attraction Friday/Saturday. You still face a “long climb” in partnerships, opportunities, relocation, but a potentially successful one!
Cancer June 21-July 22: Chase money, especially Sunday eve to Tuesday. You can meet great luck, opportunity, these few days, and a problem. The predicament concerns your home and relationships; don’t let it go underground. (It might resurface Thursday.) The rest of this week is smooth, easy, a respite from problems. Your home atmosphere is sweet and sour – temper and affection mingle. This might occur because you feel secure, yet your ambitions seem thwarted. To succeed, be ambitious about security, real estate, food, cafes or similar arenas. (However, stop short of starting any brand new projects.)
Taurus April 20-May 20: Seek quiet, rest, cool shade. Your home, family, roots, security, nutrition, gardening, property, soul – these offer good luck all week, especially Sunday eve to Tuesday. However, these three days might also bring a split between you and another – unspoken, perhaps, but sensed. This probably involves work, employment and a legal, ethical or travel situation. (A wee echo of this Thursday, also.) Your creative, romantic side surfaces mid-week – all’s fine here, though you might experience little more than a “sweet notion.” Tackle chores – safely Thursday, wholeheartedly Friday/Saturday.
Leo July 23-Aug. 22: The problems of the last two weeks ebb now. However, two remain: the lesser involves communications/travel and health/work (mostly Monday). E.g., your car breaks down so you miss work. The larger dilemma (all week) also involves communication/travel, but “pulls in” legal, educational, publishing or international factors. You’ll have to decide between facts and ideas, casual communications or profound issues, near/small or far/large. For instance, do you make a verbal agreement or sign a contract? Love or acquaintanceship? You shine Sunday night to Tuesday! Chase money mid-week.
Gemini May 21-June 20: Read, write, travel, call, connect with siblings – luck here Sunday/Monday! The last two weeks brought some confrontations, splits, or problems – or simply a definite change in direction. That’s largely over, but a subtle alienation from a loved one (or in a new romance) could occur early this week – and a not-so subtle rift Thursday. Best idea: if you want to chase romance, wait until at least Thursday 9 p.m. (PDT) onward. The entire two years ahead demand slowness, steadiness and loyalty from you, if you wish to succeed in love. A big age difference is possible. Rest, mid-week.
Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Finish, advance ongoing projects. Refrain from starting anything new. A slowdown starts next week, lasting to Sept. 12. Sunday/ Monday could solidify a source of income, and/or bring a durable set of ideas, a practical “life philosophy” that helps you go forward steadily. Instability also lurks, if you allow pleasure or romantic notions to steer you away from duties or practical goals. Contemplate the different paths of earnings versus investments. You might make a choice between these now to mid2011. Rest, contemplate to Tuesday. Money’s good Friday/Saturday. A good week!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Wishes can come true! Popularity, optimism, social delights, flirtations visit you! (They did the last two weeks, too, but might have been obscured by other problems.) Your sexual and romantic magnetism rise another notch. This mingles with a curious prudence on your part. Net result: you might have to decide whether to continue charming someone or to subtly retreat, around Monday. Similarly, you might, over the nine days ahead, face the difference between someone else’s friendliness and your own caution. There’s no harm (and much luck) in joining, bonding. Rest mid-week. Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Be ambitious, especially Sunday to Tuesday – but start no new projects. Work to complete, to give ongoing projects a new heave, to mend “prestige fences” with valuable people. Be light, humorous – the problems of the past few weeks are fading. But don’t expect co-operation: others wish you well, especially mid-week, but they won’t further your cause. Avoid gossip (and being its victim) Monday. Think about a long-term trend (now to mid-2011): your hands-on work is expanding, but your management duties are growing heavier. Which to favour? The hands-on. Rest, Friday. Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Your natural August mood – mellow, broad-minded, yearning for travel or culture – returns nicely, especially Sunday eve to Tuesday. An opportunity could arise to travel afar, attend a college (etc.) or disseminate your ideas – seize it! But be aware of one problem (now to mid-2011): it involves a choice between (or inability to merge) your future goals, your cherished wishes, your social life on the one hand, and your creative, speculative, pleasure or romantic urges on the other. E.g., should you choose friends or romance? Save for your future, or just have fun? You’ll be happy Friday/ Saturday!

August 8 - 14 Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Mysteries abound, especially Sunday to Tuesday – find out why recent career and domestic events or pressures occurred. The answer could be lucrative! Taking a forward stance, step, could give your ambitions a boost, Tuesday or Thursday eve to Saturday. A congenial, powerful female might play a favourable role. (There is also a temperamental, probably male, higher-up, who still needs a diplomatic approach.) Caution was a good idea the last two weeks, but too much now can impede you. Mid-week’s mellow, loving. All week, examine “big finances” – but complete, don’t start. Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Relationships assume prime importance, especially Sunday eve to Tuesday (when a new link might form). You can fight or cooperate; realize that the other person/side holds the aces, the power. In legal, intellectual, international, far travel, educational and cultural zones, your secrets (or some other thing which you’d rather remain hidden: desires, fears, etc.) can be your weak spot, particularly Tuesday and Thursday. The cure for this (and many things!) is honesty. You will face the need soon to choose between a profound and a more casual relationship. The casual’s luckier. Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Much work awaits – plunge in and get it done, especially Sunday eve to Tuesday. You might be very hopeful about an investment or monetary action, but study underlying trends and forces before you leap – for instance, does the economic climate of your nation or locale flow in the same direction as your idea? Maybe. In the semi-big picture (now to mid-2011) chasing earnings is luckier than relying on investments or other people’s money. Anyway, serious decisions called for. Relationships lure you mid-week. Mysteries, secrets, sexual desires make Friday/Saturday interesting! timstephens@shaw.ca • Reading: 416-686-5014

Heat briefs Heat head to Manitoba for exhibition games
Riding, roping & flying at the
RODEO – JEAN KONDA-WITTE/TIMES
Anthony Hodson of Turner Valley, Alta., above, flies off ‘Good Friday’ last Friday night at the Mighty Fraser Rodeo at Agrifair, then hurries to safety as the loose horse turns on him (inset). Upper left, cowgirl Dena Millard of Vanderhoof rounds the barrel on her big grey in the ladies barrel racing competition. Meanwhile, Virgil Poffenroth of Riske Creek, B.C. flips a calf in the tie down roping event.
Buckle up kids, we’re heading to Portage La Prairie. The Abbotsford Heat will play just two exhibition games this season, both against the Manitoba Moose and both will be in Manitoba. The Heat will tackle the Moose on Oct. 1 at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg beginning at 5:30 p.m. PDT, and then will travel to Portage La Prairie for a rematch the next day with the Vancouver Canucks farm team at the PCU Centre. Game 2 of the exhibition series goes at 5 p.m. PDT. Heat play-by-play man and director of communications and broadcast Dave Sheldon said he is looking forward to travelling to a small town like Portage La Prairie – population of just over 12,000. “You go to Portage La Prairie and other towns that are not AHL cities or NHL cities, it gives the people a chance to see our game,” he said Wednesday. The two-game exhibition set with the Moose will be the only games the Heat will play before opening up their second AHL regular season in Abbotsford. T h e He a t s w e p t t h e Moose in a two-game exhibition series in Abbotsford last September. The Heat will play the Manitoba Moose eight times this season, although a full regular season schedule has yet to be released. - CAM TUCKER/TIMES

lue Corner Boxing’s Daniel Csaszar staged another impressive performance, defeating his opponent from the Queensborough Boxing Club in the Bronze Gloves Invitational Championship recently. Csaszar’s bout was clearly the fight of the night as the 250 in attendance came to life with raucous shouts and cheers, as the local boxer defeated his opponent 28-14 in a heated series of exchanges. Csaszar admitted that although happy with the result, he gave up too many points. “I like to hang and bang but that always gives up too many points to my opponent,” he said after the match. On the previous weekend, Jake
head coach] is a great defensive coach and Blair was an outstanding role model. They both really helped me with my passing platform and being able to take control of the court,” added Perry. Perry has put himself on the path to potentially take over the mantle as UBC’s defensive specialist in the years to come. “This speaks volumes about the kind of athlete/person Ian is and work ethic that he possesses,” said Schick. “It’s not an easy transition for someone who has set his entire career to change over to a position where he must learn to master a skill he has never done previously.” – JEAN KONDA-WITTE/TIMES WITH FILES FROM UBC THUNDERBIRDS

Weitzel, another fighter from Abbotsford’s Blue Corner Boxing Club, defeated his determined but less agile opponent from Richmond at the Langley Casino Show in an equally entertaining fight. Just as the Csaszar fight, the room came to life as the two clashed in a spirited match. When it was over, Weitzel had scored most often by landing big blows to the body and the head with a devastating double left hook. As the fight moved through the final round, the referee watched his opponent closely, ready to stop the match. The fight ended in a unanimous decision for Weitzel.

The selection comes as a bit of a surprise, since Perry starred as a setter at Abbotsford’s Yale Secondary before joining the T-Birds. “I hope that this experience will take me to the next level as a libero because I am still very new to playing this position. It will also help my confidence greatly for the upcoming season,” said Perry. As the third setter on the T-Birds 2009-10 squad, Perry did not see any

Golf’s Taylor ready to go pro
Gearing up for roller hockey
Poised to turn pro, Ledgeview’s Nick Taylor has decided on an agent to represent him, likely after the U.S. Amateur later this month at Chambers Bay in Tacoma, Wash. Erring on the side of caution, Nick’s father Jay said that in case there might be a hassle with his son’s amateur status he didn’t want NICK TAYLOR to say which management company Nick had decided to join. Taylor is preparing for the Canadian Amateur next week at London Hunt Club in Ontario. The Aug. 23-29 U.S. Amateur is likely his final tournament as an amateur.
The second registration date for the fall roller hockey league is Aug. 14, from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Sports Zone in Abbotsford. The league is open to boys and girls, ages 7-16. The games are non-contact and there are no practices. All stats and standings are posted online. The cost is $135 for the season and includes a free jersey. Check the website at www.agrechockey.com for information on the league, including stats, schedules and registration dates. Sports Zone is located at 33147 South Fraser Way in Abbotsford.

he Abbotsford Cardinals and the B.C. Premier Baseball League both have a rich history of helping young players reach the pro and college ranks. And 2010 is no different. The Cardinals got a feather in their cap this season when five of their senior players signed with four different post-secondary institutions. B r y a n A r t h u r, Ro b e r t Brooks, Carter Sherban, Brett Wilson and Luke Webster are each slated to attend class and play ball at the college level beginning a month from now. “It’s nice to see the guys come in as Grade 9s and develop over the years and then see the final product,” said Cardinals head coach and general manager Andy Rempel last week after his team was eliminated in a tough three-game series with the Fraser Valley Chiefs in the BCPBL Final Eight playoffs. “If you put in the time, it’s going to pay off for you.” The hard work has certainly paid off for each of the five players who have now officially left the Cardinal nest. Arthur, a 49th-round selection of the New York Yankees earlier this spring, will attend Vernon College in Texas. “Out of the five guys, he probably has the most raw potential,” said Rempel. “He’s got a good frame, quick hands and he works hard. He just leads by example. The first week will be an eye-opener. He’ll see that he has to work even harder to fit in.”
Brooks will head to Cloud State Junior College in Kansas after grinding it out first with the Junior Cardinals and then the senior team. “Robbie works hard,” said Rempel. “He struggled with the mental part of the game this year . . . but he’ll do anything we ask of him and he puts in a 110 per cent every time. “I think for him he just needs to not live by the last at bat but live for the next at bat.” Sherban, who led the Cardinals and finished tied for first in the BCPBL with four homeruns, is off Indian Hills Community College in Iowa. He also led the team’s pitching staff in saves with 10. He struck out 24 batters in just 13.2 innings pitched. “Pitchers are going to fear him when he’s hitting,” said Rempel, “especially when he’s got the aluminum bat in his hand.” “He can hit the off-speed stuff, and he can hit the fastball. You throw him the same pitch twice in a row, he’ll make you pay.” Webster and Wilson, who often teamed up as pitcher and catcher, are the only two graduating players to stay in Canada. Both will attend UBC. “With Luke, scouts see him as a potential guy down the road,” said Rempel of his young pitcher who could hurl a fastball in at 90 miles per hour with consistency. “ With his size and his potential, three years from now he may be a guy [pro teams] are looking at.” Wilson, the Card inals catcher and perhaps the most underrated out of all five, was described simply as “gritty” by Rempel. “He doesn’t have the most God-given talents, but the knowledge of the game and the grit make up for that.”

GROUNDBREAKING HUGE HOME FOR HIGHSTREET
Forest fire smoke forcing some Valley residents indoors
RAFE ARNOTT RArnott@abbotsfordtimes.com

Fraser Canyon, approximately 18 kilometres south of Lytton, when the Convair 580 they were flying went down around 8:30 p.m. The crash is under investigation, but rocky terrain, encroaching flame and smoke from the fire have made it tough for Transportation and Safety Board investigators to gather information from the site, said board spokesman Bill Yearwood. “The site . . . there’s a lot of shale and loose rock so standing around on the slope was difficult in the smoke,” Yearwood said. see PILOTS, page A8
