Langley woman found shot to death in Abbotsford early Wednesday morning was likely not the intended victim in what appeared to be a drug-related assassination attempt, RCMP said. Homicide detectives are investigating the possibility of his life still being in danger, Carr said. “We’re not going to say if we feel it is or not, but certainly it is one of the things investigators have to consider.” The shooting took place along a stretch of rural blacktop near the corner of Polar Avenue and Townline Road, in northwest Abbotsford.

With shrinking profit margins, berry growers are concerned about rising costs and unstable and falling prices, which are determined by an increasingly competitive international market. Grower Gary Sandhar said one of the issues they’ll take to Thomson are the cost differences in fertilizer and crop sprays between B.C. and Washington. “A lot of our friends are farming across the border in Washington, and they’re paying 50 per cent less of what we’re paying for the exact same fertilizers and sprays,” he said, yet B.C. farmers compete in the same market. Sandhar said producers in Alberta faced similar cost challenges, but arrangements were made to bring down prices on products used on farms. Labour costs are significantly lower in the States as well. “We understand we can’t control the world market, but we’re asking what can we do now to remain competitive,” he said, adding he’s collecting bills from both sides of the border, and Mark Sweeney, a crop specialist with the Ministry of Agriculture is also doing his own research. “No one has the solutions right now, but this is a start,” said Sandhar. Good Neighbour bylaw Warming to summer school aims to keep city clean N

The city recently announced the start of the Good Neighbour Project, which was approved by city council at a recent regular meeting. “Over the coming months the Good Neighbour Project will highlight opportunities for neighbourhoods to get involved in community improvement programs,” said Abbotsford Mayor George Peary. “The City of Abbotsford already promotes programs like Adopt a Park or Trail and Adopt a Street – we want everyone to know about these programs and be aware of how they can become involved.” As part of the project, bylaw officers will visit neighbourhoods across the city to provide information and warnings for Good Neighbour bylaw infractions including wrecked vehicles, untidy

properties, graffiti, garbage, refuse or discarded materials in yards. “The first neighbourhood that our bylaw officers will be focusing on is the area south of South Fraser Way, east of Clearbrook Road, west of Gladwin Road and north of the Trans-Canada Highway,” said Peary.

IHIT detectives and Abbotsford police officers were observed scouring the scene Wednesday morning after descending upon the area following several 911 reports of shots fired, APD Const. Ian MacDonald said. Witness accounts put a car leaving the scene at a high rate of speed following the report of gunshots. “It’s been described as a silver passenger car [four-door sedan],” he said. The Lower Mainland District Tactical Troop is assisting with a ground search of the large rural properties surrounding

the crime scene to locate any evidence associated to the homicide, Carr said, adding that forensic and ballistic results were still a few weeks away. MacDonald said the man found with Johnson at the scene has had more than 50 interactions with Lower Mainland police in several jurisdictions for violence, weapons possession, and property theft dating back to 2005. Johnson, while known to Abbotsford police, was low on their radar compared to her male associate, according to MacDonald. “She was not at the same level of police interaction, not even close. “We have had interaction with her, but I can’t go into the specifics of what they were about.”

MacDonald couldn’t comment on whether police had interaction with Johnson while she was in the man’s company. This type of occurrence is far too common for the liking of police, Carr said. “Time and time again, police are attending an area where a person has been shot, they are often very young, and there is some sort of association to the drug trade or gangs. “Some young people are not getting the message. No maple-flavoured Tea Party

s the American mid-term elections approach, and the Tea Party movement is pushing the Republicans towards taking back the House and maybe the Senate, a lot of American liberals are asking, “why the heck are these weirdos so popular and powerful?” Meanwhile, Canada has nothing remotely comparable to the Tea Party movement. Where are our shrieking hordes of rightwing lunatics? The answer lies in the difference between American and Canadian political culture. You could argue it’s the difference between American politics and the politics of every other advanced, democratic nation on the planet. American politics is messianic and apocalyptic. Canadian politics is practical. It’s hard to imagine an apocalyptic version of Canadian politics. Our most extreme political parties tend to become more moderate over time, as both the CCF/NDP and Reform Party have done. The CCF was out-and-out dedicated to the destruction of capitalism 70 years ago. The Reform Party began with more than a whiff of Western separatism about it, and had no time for those down-east EI bums and French-speakers. The Reform Party and CCF’s move toward the centre – as the Conservatives and NDP – show how Canada’s political culture functions. We can disagree great-

the painful truth ly with the goals and policies of the major parties, but they remain bound by little things like reality. Compare and contrast with the Tea Party movement, whose goals are more . . . nebulous. Sure, they have plenty of policy ideas. The Maine Republican Party became notorious earlier this year after some of its members pushed through a platform that calls global warming a myth, calls for the elimination of the Federal Reserve, and says “freedom of religion does not mean freedom from religion,” apparently in a bid to outlaw atheism. The Texas Republicans have a platform that opposes “one world government,” wants to abolish income taxes, strip the Supreme Court of much of its power, and get the U.S. out of the UN. Ultimately, the Tea Party isn’t about a set of goals. It’s about a vision of a purified America. It’s imaginary and unattainable, which is why they’re fighting so hard for it. You can always fight harder for a dream than for practical reform to health care or education.

On the other hand, you have the messianic stream, in which Americans search for a modern Moses to lead them out of the desert of their troubles. Barrack Obama rode this theme straight to the White House, and dozens of other politicians have as well, most notably John F. Kennedy. Compare the stories they tell about George Washington – an impossibly honest war hero – with the stories we remember about John A. MacDonald. A functional alcoholic who could even turn public vomiting into an insult to his opponents, he pushed through the railroad that joined eastern and western Canada. He took bribes and was drummed out of office. He was witty and cynical in political life, but cared deeply for a handicapped daughter, and insisted that she not be shut away in private, as was all too common in his time. MacDonald is a recognizable human being. It was his flaws, as much as his virtues, that shaped Canadian politics as a place not made for saints or heroes. Canadians by and large don’t believe in a special, sacred destiny for this country. They don’t believe in political saviours. Please, let’s keep it that way.

■ Be realistic about your travel times and check the road situation before you leave. Check www.drivebc.com for possible highway closures before heading out and allow extra time. If you are going to be later than expected, don’t use it as an excuse to put the pedal to the metal. ■ Slow down and keep your distance. Always follow the posted speed limits in construction and playground zones. Weaving in and out of traffic is one of the top five high-risk behaviours that cause car crashes, according to the RCMP website. ■ Lastly, buckle up. If you aren’t wearing a seat belt, the chances of dying in a car accident are 25 times higher. The last recommendation is to set an example. Show your children and other drivers the benefit of courteous and cautious driving. Maybe if enough of us practise these suggestions, this B.C. long weekend will be the safest one yet.

An evolving debate over creation Whether or not a Creator God made the planet, we all need to protect it

ne of my favorite expressions and descriptions of the Christian God is that He is Creator God. This particular name of God has led to all kinds of opposition, argument, in-fighting, good science, bad science, and crazy speculations by Christians and evolutionists alike. And, while the creation-evolution debate rages on, a couple of key concepts about this Creator God get missed. First, if this God is real and He did in fact create the world around us, then Christians should take seriously God’s command to care for and tend to the earth. Unfortunately, we Christians have been up in arms for years

over the creation/evolution debate, dumping time, energy, and resources into defending our claim for a Creator God while largely ignoring to care for His creation like He asked. Many bridges could be built and many walls broken down when we recognize that, though there is disagreement on the origins of our blue planet, there is wide scale agreement that we must care for it. Second, if we can believe the Bible, which says that humankind was made in the image and likeness of Creator God, then we will also come to understand that part of what it means to be human is to create. We are creative creatures wired in such a way that we

Faith that matters love to make music, paint and write, dance and sing, sculpt, dream, and enjoy the beauty of artistic expression found all around us. Artists are funny people; easily stereotyped as being slightly off-centre, nocturnal, (w)mildly moody, on the bizarre edge of fashion and taste with quirky intelligence, poor grammar, even worse math skills, and ideals that would make the ’60s blush. The reality, however, is that our very humanness means that every one of us is a creative art-

ist and innovator in some way. An artist isn’t a special type of person with quirky habits so much as every person is a special type of artist. This means that desk jockeys in their cubicles wearing beige khaki pants and sweater vests are creative genius’ at something and that the people you least expect to create and innovate will astound you with something. Sadly, part of the brokenness and incompleteness of the human nature has been the wide-scale loss or suppression of the artist within. For the Christian, this affects our faith in a profound way. One artist said it this way, “An unimagined faith is as undesirable as an unreasoned faith. Without imagination, all hearts are closed, all desires unknown.” When we are able to imag-

ine and envision a God that is beautiful, we begin to feel and experience a faith that is vibrant; our hearts are opened, and we begin to come alive in all that we do. Colour, rhythm, experimentation, invention, and curiosity spurs on our faith, often causing us to creatively respond to injustice, innovate new forms of worship and community, and imagine a way for the church to move forward in a culture that thinks we’re backwards. The church, of all places, should be the most creative place on earth as we strive to be like Artist God who made us in his image and likeness, co-creators in the world he made. he dog days of summer are at our feet. Most folks are finally starting to relax through sunny days and slow nights, hanging around with family and friends. Add great music to the mix, and it’s heaven on earth. Enjoy all that and more in our own backyard, at the 2010 Rockin’ River Music Festival on Aug. 13 and 14 at the riverside setting of the Mission Raceway. The event showcases award-laden artists in Canadian country music, many who call the Fraser Valley home. Johnny Reid, Crystal Shawanda, Jessie Farrell, Aaron Pritchett, The Higgins, One More Girl, Ridley Bent, the Whiskey Jane Band, Diezel, Chris Buck, Karen Lee Batten, The Johnson Brothers, Debbie Bergeron and others will delight us at the familyfriendly event. A Rockin’ River festival organizer and performer, Kenny Hess gushes over the calibre of artists. “There’s a fabulous line-up this year. We’ve got great local talent, who are [also] huge stars across the country,” said Hess. Most have earned awards and nominations for their talents. Reid, for one, earned the 2009 Canadian Country Music Fans’ choice award, plus album of the year, male artist of the year and other honours. Jessie Farrell “has won just about every award you can win in B.C.,” said Hess, including B.C Country Music female vocalist last year, and she always has a song at the top of the radio play lists. One More Girl, two sisters who hail from Maple Ridge, has had five top 10 hits, and five of their videos have hit No. 1 in Canada. In 2009 Bent collected seven BCCMA awards

Hot country stars The Higgins will be one of the many award-winning acts at this year’s Rockin’ River Music Festival, on Aug. 13 and 14 at Mission’s Raceway Park. including roots/Canadiana artist, entertainer, fans’ choice, male vocalist, songwriter, best single and the Gaylord Wood Traditional Country award. Whew. Off stage the music continues, as homegrown favourites Brent Lee Band, Merv Tremblay and Bud Webb & the Outriders entertain in the festival beverage tent. Along with the exciting first-class country music comes a first-rate outdoor venue. The grounds are surrounded by towering cottonwoods, adjacent to the slow moving Fraser, and are serviced by a powerful sound system. “In all the shows I’ve played, it’s without question the best site. The sound last year was impeccable. It’s the best outdoor sound I’ve heard,” Hess said. There’s plenty of room for guests with 1,000 shady camping spots on site. Rockin’ River attracts visitors from B.C. and beyond, and onethird of the camping area is already booked. Reserve seating is sold out, although Country 107.1 radio has some seats left.

But while up to 95 per cent of the visitors are from out of town, locals have yet to take in this star-studded showcase, said Hess. “We’re hoping the locals will come out and support this wonderful event, and these talented musicians.” As in previous years, the Mission firefighters will run the beer tent and take the proceeds for their charities. Food vendors will keep you fueled with tasty First Nations and South Asian fare, as well as burgers and dogs. Being a family-friendly affair, children under 12 get in free. ■ Tickets are $99 for two days, $49 for Friday night,

or $79 for all day Saturday. Camping is $25 for tents for two nights, $25 a night for RVs. Gates open at 3 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday. Articulate arguments against ‘too low speed limits’ and ‘extreme enforcement’, and for go-with-the-flow mobility ignore some important fundamentals. Accord-

Evans noted, “Prior to the change, the speed limits on rural Interstates were nearly all 70 mph… Average travel speed was observed to be 63.4 mph. After imposition of the 55 mph limit, the observed speed declined to 57.6 mph, a seemingly modest 5.8 mph drop…. However, a sharp drop in the fatality rate occurred.”

T h i r t e e n d a y s a g o, 1 5 year-old Allana Leefedje got a chance to throw her own smack Austin’s way at the filming of The Boxer and the Kid, which filmed a scene at the Mission City Boxing Club. “I told him my pipes are going be bigger than his,” she quipped last week, just days after meeting one of her heroes from WWE. “He was my favourite wrestler. I loved it when he would smash the beers together and throw it into the crowd, I thought that was so funny. “He’s so cool and so nice too. I was expecting this big guy and he was almost like a teddy bear.” Leefedje was one of three Mission City Boxing Club members to be a part of the Saturday stage of the production. She, along with 17-year-old Austin Stubel and Matt McIntosh, spent the entire day pounding the punching bags and working out as extras in the movie, which features Austin as a boxing mentor to

t was close, but the Ab b o t s f o rd Ca rd i n a l s were once again bested by the Fraser Valley Chiefs again. But this time, the sting is far more painful than losing two of three in the B.C. Premier Baseball League regular season. The Cards were eliminated from playoffs on Sunday in heartbreaking fashion, as they dropped a 4-2 decision to the Chiefs in the third and decisive game of the best-ofthree Final Eight series at the Whalley Athletic Park. The Chiefs got one big inning in Sunday’s finale,

scoring three runs in the bottom half of the third inning to jump ahead. Despite their best efforts, the Cardinals were unable to catch up. The Cardinals forced Game 3 in the series with a clutch extra inning victory in the second game of Saturday’s double-header. Abbotsford scored in the bottom of the ninth inning to claim victory, but needed to rally in the bottom half of the sixth to force extras. The Cardinals scored twice in the inning to tie the game at 3-3. Carter Sherban, who allowed just one run in 13.2 innings pitched coming out of the bullpen in the regular season, struck out two and didn’t allow a run in 1.2 innings pitched to earn the victory in Game 2. Abbotsford dropped Game 1 of the series by a score of 4-0.

This is a good opportunity to play tennis at your own skill level on a local community tennis court. The only criteria is the ability to play. Players or teams will play a minimum of six matches against players of their own skill level. There are lifelong opportunities, so the more we can get kids involved in positive activities is better for the community.” Sarah Garrett, community relations manager for the Heat, added the team plans to schedule even more Chuck-a-Puck nights this upcoming season.
