Criminologist says numbers misleading CAM TUCKER camtuckertimes@gmail.com
O
ne day before a possible homicide occurred, Abbotsford was given the dubious distinction of being named Canada’s murder capital for the second consecutive year. Numbers released by Statistics Canada on Tuesday showed the Abbotsford-Mission Metropolitan Census Area had the highest homicide rate per capita in the country for 2009 at 5.2 per 100,000 people, which didn’t come as a surprise to the Abbotsford Police Department. “We kind of knew this was going to happen,” APD Const. Ian MacDonald said. “A lot of the comments that we made even in 2009 were indicative of the fact that we were, in advance, preparing ourselves for the fact the numbers as they related to homicides were not going to be favourable for us.” see CAPITAL, page A5
