mong the coloured crayon portraits of smiling butterflies and rainbows on Clare’s memory table, among the typed notes framed by pink construction paper, and among the photos of Clare, sat a well-loved, slightly worn green teddy called Baby. It’s a Care Bear, Clare’s favourite teddy, an appropriate symbol for a little girl who is universally remembered as someone with genuine affection and warm hugs for everyone. “She just always had a smile on her face. She was always an upbeat child, a happy girl, a strong kid,” said Marlene Stobbe, whose young children played with Clare Shelswell

t’s a long way from Mission to the Queen’s royal garden party. But that’s exactly where Fraser Valley opera phenom Dustin Hiles found himself while in Her Majesty’s attendance last Wednesday at Rideau Hall in Ottawa. “It was amazing,” Hiles said over the phone from Ottawa, still reeling from the royal experience of shaking DUSTIN HILES the hand of the Queen of England. “She’s such a humble and energetic person. She’s tiny, a very tiny woman . . . there’s this presence about her . . . the greatness, and I’m standing before the sovereign. It was just one of those moments,” he said. “I’m still in shock.”
